Since we've been talking about this pretty extensively in a different thread I figured I would make a new thread for discussing, troubleshooting and attempting to improve the ram management issue on the S6.
Hopefully some good will come of this
So far this Is what we've got:
Should work on all variants including the edge and possible on other Samsung devices.
Thanks to @mikeyinid for finding these and @s.rapp for answering questions, and making the instructions easier to understand
And anyone else who I may have missed who helped contribute.
Prerequisites:
-A rooted device
-A root file explorer/manager app
-A backup of your original build.prop to be safe
Explanation: (From @mikeyinid )
Here is a quick rundown on how this came about, and what we actually know.
Since I purchased the S6 on release day, I've been messing with certain things, as you can see from the ROM I posted, Looper(shameless plug). Debloating Samsung apps really helped with battery life and I was pretty happy with the results. But like so many other people, I didn't understand why my S6 killed apps so aggressively. Initially I thought it might be the memory leak we all know so much about in 5.0. So, I did a little research and found the patch for that. While it did help keep the device stable over time, apps were still being killed with no prejudice. All this time I noticed really useless services running in the background, often stuff I'd never even opened. I studied LMK and started messing with those settings. After a month of trying everything I could find documented, I was ready to give up. Yesterday I was looking through the services.jar smali for the 37,875th time and realized the DHA referenced in there has to have something to do with memory management. I kept overlooking it because I hadn't seen mention of it anywhere else. I am no smali guru, as some of you know. But it was pretty obvious DHA was influencing memory management to some extent. Samsung, although leaving us in the dark on this, was kind enough to give us props to set the values for DHA. I pulled a few that seemed relevant, added them to my build.prop, and what do you know. For the first time in almost two months of tinkering, I saw an improvement in the way my device was managing memory.
The thing everyone needs to understand; I have no clue what DHA is. It overrides every aspect of Googles LMK and seems to do so in a way that makes more sense. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than myself will be able to tune this to the point the S6 will be the multi-tasking champ. There are several other props in the smali that are probably useful. I will try to get them all with their default values posted today. This has been pretty exciting for me, I spent way to much time trying to figure out the issue to not make some sort of progress. I hope you guys enjoy the tweaks, and I hope it helps sway those of you on the fence about keeping this device to stay. It's only gonna get better
Instructions:
First find your build.prop. This is located in /system. to get to /system you need to go to the root directory using a file explorer and then go to the system folder. The build.prop will be in there. You can also use and app such as build.prop tweaker but its a bit harder (imo)
In your build.prop scroll to the very bottom and paste this in:

Now you need to find and remove any duplicate build.prop lines which may cause an issue. So look through the build.prop and remove any lines that look like these(Not the ones you just added at the bottom!):

ro.config.dha_lmk_scale=
Finally reboot your device and report back here!

A note from @mrapp :
"The major addendum here seems to be that when using this build.prop apps like Chrome and and those calling webpages via Webview (Tinfoil for Facebook) still suck. The kernels being tested at the moment don't appear to have this issue, so if you're capable of flashing kernels I personally recommend checking out the Vindicator thread if you're on T-Mobile/W8 or UniKernel (universal) if you're on any other device. UniKernel tests may or may not be edge friendly, so always make a backup. Lots of people have gotten in to trouble today. Don't be one of them!"
Please note we are constantly experimenting with different values so these are subject to be updated rather frequently
As I was saying before, Maybe someone can try compare Zenfone 2 services.jar with the one in samsung galaxy s6.
The Asus Zenfone 2 is knowed to had a great multitasking experience, it can keep a loot of apps even in his 2GB version, and remember that Zenfone is in Android 5.0 and don't have any problem with multitasking.
I already downloaded the firmware for Zenfone and decompiled his services.jar if someone like to try something, here is attached:

I'll take a look at it, but I've already gone through several different services.jar trying to find anything that might make a difference. Everything appears to be exactly how Google intended it to be.

I also noticed that Samsung uses the ramdisk to set VM memory settings and lmk settings rather than actually modifying the source for some reason. I tried removing all of these and letting the settings be stock google but that also made no difference

Right, all of that can be controlled with init.d scripts. i set the values ridiculously high and can see that that scripts actually work. Then going the other way no matter how low I set them or even disable them, there is no difference. Still can't have more than 5 or so apps open.

What's a good test to see if memory management is improved? I've done some mods to lmk in my latest kernel and want to see if it helps any.

I don't know a whole about kernel stuff. Does there happen to be any oom_adj stuff in there?
I'm losing hope that this will be fixed with any update. I think moving to arm64 may have shot Samsung in the foot. What is the other arm64 lollipop device samsung has released? Note 4?.

I meant I thought it may help with killing recents so soon. It had some tweaks to preserve favorites among other things

I have note 4 too and it has same problem with latest lollipop update, i switched to cm12.1 and now all the problem are gone, switching between apps it's really fast and apps stay in ram flawlessly.

Right, but what on the ROM side could be causing this kind of behavior? I see myself as quite tech savvy, but I'm woefully uninitiated in the inner workings of Android you guys are unraveling here.
Even after removing just about all of Samsungs proprietary stuff, just leaving the bare basics, we're still seeing app genocide as soon as we're multitasking.
It'd sure be awesome of the community fixes this before Samsung does...
Has Samsung acknowledge this issue and said they will fix it with the 5.1.1 update? Honestly, I feel like for the premium you pay for this phone, this is very ridiculous. Things like these can really make or break a purchase. I myself have not got the S6 solely for this reason, I cannot justify spending 600+ on a device which cannot even keep up with my 3 year old Nexus 4.
I hope they do fix it this month though. What are the chances they will though, the S6 is selling well so Samsung probably does not care about these things.

The S6 isn't selling as well as Samsung had hoped. And the memory issue is probably a large part of it. I have a S4 also, and it doesn't have any issues multi tasking on lollipop. It's shameful that a 3 year old device can managed to run just about everything I throw at it with no problem.

Samsung has acknowledged the ram issue and said they will fix it in an update. That's about as specific as they got. My guess would be 5.1.1 update though.

Sadly, Samsung has neither acknowledged the specific issue nor promised any updates. All the articles in the blogosphere regarding this (including the one from Forbes) cite a Facebook comment from a random Samsung employee giving an incredibly vague and generic response about future updates when asked a direct question about the memory issue by xda member johanbiff.
I'm baffled by the low level of journalism here.

Did you try Adblock Fast that is build into Samsung 4.0? Download from App store and then manually setup using instructions.
I'm using it on my S7 with zero issues and no ads. Of course, limited to Samsung browser.
I'm using adguard which sets up personal VPN on phone to block ads. Seems to work for all apps but does hit battery life a bit. Worth it for me.

Yes. Legit. It got bad ratings but works perfect on my S7. I think people haven't realized you need Samsung Internet 4.0 or it won't work.

Bootloaders are locked. Flash secured and all. All us carriers, not the exynos, but all us snapdragons, including tmobile. We are on twitter and got a response from John Legere who claims to be working on a potential solution to at least getting tmobiles unlocked. Historically we have always been fine, but for some reason we aren't now. Doesn't make sense for the exynos to unlocked and SD to be locked imo

I'm sure something will come up eventually. Us folks on ATT are used to being screwed with the locked bootloaders. Think it might be new for T-Mobile users though. It might take a little longer, but ATT Samsung devices typically get root after some point.
I've had it since launch, my Nexus 6 basically died. I miss the debloating root allows, like how I'm forced to have the Directv app when I don't have any interest in having Directv. I do like it though it's a nice phone. If we can get root to remove the bloatware I'm for that otherwise I'll live with it for a year until something better drops.

It doesn't remove anything, it just disables apps that are able to be disabled. I can do that myself.

Yeah I disabled the directv app and some others myself. Glad I have expandable storage so it doesn't hog my memory LOL

VPNs like Adguard don't "eat" battery. What your seeing is that the system attributes all battery used by apps that access the internet to the VPN.

Seems like Pre-Lollipop builds were always hacked for root. Also, at least on my S5 G900A, Pre-rooted 5.0 was able to be flashed as long as the BL was kept OA1 (KK 4.4.4). But if you took the OTA to 5.0, no root ever! Also they totally locked it down with 5.1. FU ATT!!!! :laugh::silly:
But they sure did get into that S6 pretty fast, didn't they? Go figure.
I applied to this Samsung Mobile Insights program. Might get a free G935A or G930A if accepted into it. I do not know how I will live without root, but at least it has a sdcard. I do not have a good feeling about a battery that does not come out though...
I've been away from android for about 2 years but the note 7 had me wanting to make a move back currently rocking the iPhone 6s+ jailbroken. And everything that I have seen about the iPhone 7 has not impressed me at all and with it looking to NOT have a headphone jack .. thats a no go for me .
Im asking if anyone has a clue if the phone will be rootable in order to be able to remove the bloat and KNOT ( I think that what its called ) security

Well I found this http://www.rootupdate.com/2016/08/root-samsung-galaxy-note-7-without-pc.html?m=1 and it says Chainfire has a root file for it. It doesn't specify the carrier or anything but there's hope I guess

i'm going to guess the bootloader is locked like the s7 edge. hopefully it's not too long before we have a exploit to root.

It's called KNOX, also you don't need root to remove bloat on android 5+. Some will argue for space purposes but the system parition is just that, chances are if you simply cannot uninstall and you have to disable, then the application resides in the system parition. Deleting app in the system partion creates no more useable user space.
As far as Knox, what makes you want to remove it?

With the evolution technology and the reliance on mobile devices, Having KNOX is not as bad as it seems, the piece of mind knowing I have access to defense grade mobile security is great for a business and general security aspect. which goes far past fingerprints and basic passwords. Just my opinion....

The golden question is, is there a back door to the iron gates of KNOX? On the front end it can be encrypted to the moon and back, but if there is a back door, it's pointless. Also with finger print scanners and the iris scanner. What a convenient way to capture personal data. Let the people do the work for them...brilliant.
I'm curious to hear what Dev's that know the in's and out's of the software have to say about this...The only way we'd be able to know for sure is if it was fully open source to be able to see any hidden doors and where they exist.

Oh and I do hope someone finds an exploit to be able to stably root.
I keep coming back to these threads day after day, fingers crossed. I can't stomack paying $900 for a device that I don't have full control over. Might as well by an iPhone with the better OS with the way Samsung is moving.

Kind of crazy to decide to buy or not buy a phone because of an ap that doesn't even come installed on the phone. IN any event, if ROOT is found for the Note 7 - then you can install Xposed)
Chances are very high that the US Varients of the Note 7 are all going to be locked. I will be shocked if TMOBILE does not lock down the Note 7 like they did on the S7 (well if you listen to TMOBILE they say Samsung locked it - not tmobile) whatever, my bet is it is going to be locked.
In any event, the Note 7 is going to be a beast of a phone - just like the S7 Edge -BUT, not much different than the 7 Edge - a little larger - slightly better camera - S Pen of course - but otherwise, not a whole lot different - that is probably the main reason why I am struggling with whether to buy or not - I played with one at Best Buy the other day and I like the feel of Note 7 a lot - the curved screen is slightly different than the S7 Edge - but it still looks amazing - not sure what I am going to do.....we'll see....I love new toys - for that reason alone, I will probably end up getting it - but still havent made a final decision....I will NOT buy a pre-order like I have done with every other phone since the note 2 - I got burned when the S7 Edge turned out to be locked and I am not going to risk that again ...we'll find out soon enough...
Yea it sure is a toss up at this point and Samsung if you are listening, you are not doing yourself a favor for locking boot loaders. You don't have to worry about anything, because you'll still make the sales off of the majority who don't care about unlocked BL's, but one thing that you do have to understated is that although the phone enthusiasts may make up a small percentage, we are the ones who are responsible for making up the foundation of the phone customizing culture. You are on the edge and about to lower yourself into the apple territory. Don't do that.

Would a root for the Note 7 cause the iris / finger scanner & Pay apps to stop working or is that just for samsung pay? I ordered my Note 7 yesterday knowing that I probably won't see root for a while, but I don't know if it's worth it if root breaks some of the other functions. At least for me...

Xposed is hardly a reason to make the low fruit argument of it might as well be an apple if you can't root it. The fact that I can upload whatever files I want, I can OTG connect keyboards, mice, thumbdrives, expandable memory was brought back, replacement launchers, I can install apps outside of the market, disabled built in software, change what app handles your messages.
Inherently there is so much more flexibility in android. You could drop android back two version numbers and functionality still holds its own against iOS today
All that happens before root.

If its like the Note 5 when it comes to root (if you can) then it will only kill Samsung Pay. Of course there were other devices (S5/6?) that lost finger print scanning because of the root method. We kind of just have to wait and see.

I know you weren't talking to me but in my own personal opinion "less functionality" (A.k.a. without root)
means
I cannot control the CPU frequency or GPU, or the governor.
I cannot change the boot animation
I cannot use xposed
I cannot do whatever I want
I cannot tweak what I want for better performance or battery life
I cannot have custom ROMs
I cannot be able to show off my device like "I got root!"
I cannot disable some of the bloat ware that the system does not let me disable by default
I cannot calm my "they are spying on me" by uninstalling sketchy as hell apps or useless that just drain my battery
I cannot not just be bored and test out a **** load of ROMs or Root applications
I cannot have my snapchat mods/hacks
I cannot (Before I actually got YouTube Red) use xposed to make YouTube play in the background
I cannot decompile system applications and re-write some of it or re-theme it and then put it on my phone
I cannot be nerdy and make my my device seem like a samsung s5 or whatever other device I want by changing things such as the model ID and such
I cannot change my IMEI when I don't want to call MetroPCS but I need to test a different SIM card

TL;DR: I need root! I cannot live without it and unless you taste and eat the delicious glory(root) as much as I do, you wouldn't understand.

Listing all the things you can do with root is great but my gripe is the claim of "It might as well be an iPhone" when you can't root it. Thats a very low energy argument.
With my Note 7 and its inferior replacement, the S7E, Verizon had loaded both phones up with a plethora of bloatware. On top of what was preinstalled, I'd constantly find new apps magically appearing every so often.
I subsequently learned that the spontaneous new apps were installed without my permission by DT Ignite, malware (IMO) pre-installed by Verizon. Once that was disabled, things quieted down.
My Note 8 that arrived yesterday had far fewer initial crapware games and apps, and I can't find any evidence of DT Ignite in the Apps Manager. Has Verizon finally smartened up, or do you think they'll find another way to pollute our phones?

Thanks, DT Ignition did find it ... it's now called something generic like "Mobile Services." But it's gone now.

It's a background app installed by carriers that will download and install games and apps on your phone whether you want them or not. It's very annoying to purge your phone of bloatware only to see it come back mysteriously by itself.

I had used PDP (Package Disabler Pro) to disable nearly everything it recommended on my Note 7 and the S7E that replaced it, at least until Nougat was released. After the upgrade PDP didn't work anymore, but I pretty much knew what to disable by then and DT Ignite was at the top of my list. Nothing came back after I shut that down, and the 2 or 3 security updates VZW has pushed since then didn't re-enable it.
I'm cautiously optimistic that the Note 8 will stay fairly clean ... at least until Oreo is released for the N8.

Most of the totally useless crapware cannot be disabled without a package disabler app
FWIW, the one I usually use (Package Disabler Pro) is not working on my Note FE, but, BK Disabler is.
I'd say it's well worth the couple of dollars vs dealing with unwanted bloat ware...

I avoid disabling anything to avoid issues when updates are pushed - I never disabled DT Ignite on my VZW S8 and I never had anything pushed on my phone. Also if you don't want to be tracked, you're using the wrong operating system to begin with.

Good for you, seriously, but that wasn't my experience. I'd wake up to new, unwanted games and apps on my Note 7 and S7 Edge pretty regularly. And after disabling DT Ignite, I never had a problem with any of the updates, including the Nougat release for the S7E. I had to disable DT Ignite again after that installed, but the 3 security updates since have all installed just fine.
Not sure if this is the right place but here it goes. I actually use some VZW stuff. I like the native VZW to VZW video calling. I also love the VZW premium visual voicemail. The VZW cloud is handy, but I can do without.
Anyone know how I get this stuff?

Not bloatware, but I'm pissed ours didn't get the upgrade for the swipe down on homescreen bringing down notifications rather than a 2nd app drawer command.

I just got off the phone with VZW. My HD calling, video calling and visual voicemail isn't working. Not sure if the CSR was right, but she said there is an advance calling setting on the VZW N8 that I couldn't find on my unlocked Sammy N8. I have seen it before on my S8+ so I know What she is talking about.
I said maybe mine isn't provisioned correctly. She said she wasn't sure. I am going to call back tomorrow to speak with tech support

If you really want it, Nova Launcher can do this. I actually prefer using the fingerprint reader for this, though, and you don't need Nova Launcher for it (although I'd rather have Nova Launcher than not).
Yes action launcher does too but the Note is the only phone I usually use the default launcher with. The sensor isn't convenient to me yet.

I'm not giving that leach any more of my money. He thinks people will buy it over and over and Google let's him get by with it.
The reality is that every phone is slightly different. The package disabler works extremely well to remove bloat and freeze everything that you don't want to deal with but preserve Knox and other security things. It's well worth the money in my opinion. Most people pay more money then that app just to drink a cup of coffee once.

It's the principle and I don't pay for the same cup of coffee over and over. Besides the app wouldn't trip Knox if you disabled every app on the phone. It may brick but not trip Knox. There are minimal changes to the app, and occasionally none at all. Taking an app down and then bringing it back, making it a new buy, is unethitical and unnecessary.

Just download ADB bootloader and delete the apps. I got package disabler to tell me the names of the apps and deleted them ALL one by one i have 0 bloatware from At&T and delete a few from Samsung Also including that annoying GoT games.
