[FIX] [HELIUM] [HYDROGEN] Video Recording Fix

Here is a fix for the video recording not working. This fix works on my Stock Global ROM for the Helium. It may work on CM13 based roms but there may be bugs. This works on the 64/128gb Chinese Helium and the 32gb Chinese Hydrogen.

Thanks for trying. Just reporting... On CM13 third edition hydrogen fix doesn't work.The very first time it recorded video with no sound, then on second attempt it recorded just the first frame and no sound. Reboot doesn't help.

Try it on Resurrection Remix and let me know if it works on there. I don't have a Hydrogen so I can't test. There are also so many more options in Resurrection Remix that I don't even want to use plain CM13.

I try it in 2. Edition of CM13. Video work, but i have no Sound.

Tried it right now. RR V2 : Video works but playback seems to be 4x faster than normal. And no Sound.
I really hope you find the problem. It's simple the best phone I eher had.

I have researched/experimented with the video recording bug and I am pretty sure this is the problem.
That is exactly what happens on CM13 based ROMs on Mi Max. I have replicated it by rebooting with usb connected and recording works... dies after usb disconnect and device wakes from deep sleep. I even did dirty remux of brocken recording on my PC and it proved all video frames were there but with incorrect duration.
So looks like we have to wait and hope Xiaomi to fix the device firmware/kernel? part that causes the deep sleep problem on CM(very unlikely) or release source code.
As you probably know the list of all vendor files pulled from miui to build CM is based on the official CM device tree for Note 3 Pro(kenzo) which has very similar hardware... They even pull many of those files for kenzo from Mi Max miui base( android_device_xiaomi_kenzo/proprietary-files.txt). I compared the camera firmwares for both and it is exactly the same bit-by-bit. And yet kenzo CM13 don't have that problem. So it must be some other firmware part or kernel issue.
Also wondering why as far as I know miui doesn't have that problem using same firmware/kernel!? Must be something in the camera app or framework or something...

If I have time I will try to build xposed module to intercept the video and fix the first frame duration as dirty/temporary fix(as explained in the link).
EDIT: Ok... As prove of concept build xposed module for testing. It fixes recorded videos but needs some tuning... The first few audio samples are cut off in the repair process and audio gets out of sync. Have to figure out how to fix that...
Just install the attached apk, enable the module in xposed installer and reboot. That's it. Just record as usual. Works with CM and RR(not tested) build-in Camera apps only(for now...).

Seems to work on CM13 (3rd version) on my Hydrogen but only if the recorded videos are saved in internal storage (the camera apps non responsive if saving to sdcard). Thanks for putting this fix out, really appreciated.

I should've not called it a fix, it's just a dirty hack... I still can't find a way to sync audio/video properly. That sdcard problem is probably related to much lower write speeds.

Thanks for the explanation. Hopefully there will be a permanent fix to the video recording problem in due course. For now, your hack will come in handy.

You may want to look at CPUAwake code. with CPUAwake enabled there is no problem with camera after deep sleep and overnight battery drain is still the same (0-1%). It will be great to make "dirty hack" independent from any app (xposed , cpuawake) as a piece of code (somewhere in boot.img inits?). Thank you. as for "no sound" in my patches/builds(some stock miui audio-related files files) I have no problem with it but in some cameras "mono" should be choosen as an audio source. or it could be only "mono" - never tried them separate.

Yep, my initial test confirms CPUAwake keeps video recording working after device wake up... Thank you for your discovery:good:
I tried a similar idea initiating wakelock before recording but it didn't work...
Is CPUAwake open source? Can't find any code...

I think if we open the hood (UI) there is a single line that tells to the system something like: "system, dont do this !"

I actually examined CPUAwake code and it uses android native wake lock acquire() call so nothing special there. And it doesn't release the wake lock till disabled. Don't like that... Trying to find better solution... We'll see...

Let me know if this fixes video recording on CM based ROMs...
Add these two lines to /system/build.prop:

... and do full reboot(not just soft). USB disconnected... Test video recording, if it works leave device with screen off for 5 minutes, test recording again. It should work(fixed)...
EDIT: I should've mentioned it will only work if video recording was working for you after fresh reboot but brakes when device wakes up from deep sleep... This means all early CM based ROMs are out... they didn't have any video recording working at all or no sound...
EDIT 2: Second line is not needed. Only first line keeps video recording working after deep sleep...

ROMs with almost no bugs

Is there any non OOS based ROM with a perfectly working fingerprint scanner and primary camera. Something that's really stable?

Everything you find in this forum is perfectly stable, maybe with the exception of MIUI.
Oneplus limited custom ROMs by not releasing sources that would make slow motion video, HDR and the "HQ" mode work. This means these are broken on all non OOS based ROMs.
The fingerprint scanner will also get a bit slower, but it's still gonna beat an iPhone.

Would you recommend the jump from oxygen OS at the expense of, what you state to be, worse low light performance, removal of features like slow motion videos and HDR, and the slowing of the fingerprint sensor... I suppose it depends if you use the camera then and enjoy the speed of your phone unlock?

This is totally wrong. MIUI Xs is the only non OOS rom where the camera works perfectly including auto-HDR, Slow Motion and HQ as it is based on H2Os. I am using this build and it even has ota support for miui weekly. Aside from the fact that MIUI doesn't boot on my device, it should be pretty stable. I seriously couldn't care less about the camera as long as it screws my phone up.
I like MIUI. Believe me, I tried. I downloaded every single version I could find, flashed all of them, none of them booted. Flashed fine, but then black screen, white notification LED, computer recognized the phone as Qualcomm debug mode. Yeah...
Works for some, not for me. And I'm not alone with this.

Try this Version. Believe me .... DO a clean flash --> Wipe everything including internal memory and flash from adb sideload.
Make sure your file system is F2FS and not EXT4. Update to latest nougat OOS and then flash as said above !!

Since we use 7.1.1 blobs from openbeta3 on this unofficial op3t optimized lineage build most camera issue are gone - OnePlusCamera from openbeta3 is included additionally.
Fingerprint sensor was never an issue on these builds.

Honestly: I don't know. To my own surprise it was just working. The only remaining issue: if you want to add a fp, you need to wait for some seconds before starting to register new fp; otherwise the fps is working as home button.

HDR on back cam is working - no HDR on front cam. What's still missing is raw.
I'm no photographer and I lack a good judgment for stills. I suggest you take a nandroid and check yourself if the rom (especially the cam) matches your demands.

I tried, but just like on OOS based ROMs, I cannot tell the difference between HDR being on or off. That's despite me giving it a challenging lighting situation.
With my Nexus 5, HDR photos had no EXIF info. At least no things such as ISO, exposure time. With the OP3T, I have full EXIF, which shouldn't be possible, because the whole point of HDR is that I don't have a single ISO value and a single exposure time value.
Due to the EXIF situation and the fact that I cannot tell a difference between pictures with HDR on and off, I concluded that it is not working. Am I the only one with this problem?
Can someone upload pictures taken back to back, where one was taken with HDR on and the other with HDR off?

how's the battery life vs oos? and do you have V4a flashed and working?

There's a work around for this. Use on screen nav bar. And then register all your fingerprints. Turn it off afterwards if you don't want.

I think waiting some seconds is the better (aka faster) workaround: changing to onscreen nav bar and reverting back takes about 10ms. Waiting for 5 s takes 5 s... Just a matter of peesonal taste. Work around the workaround...

Has anyone tried their ROMs?
As far as I know, the Honor Note 8 is based on the same Kirin 955 (Hi3650) platform as the:
Honor V8, P9, P9 Plus
and the Kirin 950s (also Hi3650) - Honor 8, Honor V8, Mate 8.
HN8 isn't listed as supported, and I imagine that's probably because it's a rare device outside China as it never launched internationally. Hopefully rather than some kind of strange hardware difference that SNAFUs everything.
The Android 8 / EMUI 8 kernel source is available at http://download-c1.huawei.com/downl...oadId=99970&version=425799&siteCode=worldwide so if it does need something added to make their ROMs compatible, is it possible that it's going to happen?
I bought one due to it being the very last of the big screen 16:9 devices. The camera I don't really care about, as I've decided the best solution is a big screen and big battery, and a Sony RX100 with Wifi / NFC / BT. Selling my P20 Pro as the screen's too small and narrow, and development has been killed stone dead due to the no more bootloader unlocks.
Anyway, can anyone shed some light?

I have not tried it, but i read some feedback from other people that have installed it on their Honor Note 8.
It works, but it is slower. Especially when scrolling, there is noticeable lag and it is not smooth compared to stock rom. I wish there was a better rom, but it seems stock is still the best.

I searched the threads and couldn't find any mention. Do you remember where or when? It may be that optimisation for the 955 has been improved significantly since then. Though I suppose by the same token it could be total lack of HN8 optimisation that's the issue.
I haven't uninstalled the stock system apps and Google Play Services framework yet, but I have disabled them all, revoked all permissions and installed lightweight alternatives. It's a lot better, but still quite a way off LOS / AOSP based ROMs that I'm used to. General speed is decent, but there are quite frequent stutters and slow responses.
How does the latest versions of Kang compare? Much quicker?
Have the updates (application only) past B528 sped things up significantly? Chinese forums seem to indicate that B533 or later will go full release in the next week or two.

Anyway, sounds positive. If official HN8 and Hi3650 support came only with the last (August) update, then I think there's considerable hope for improvement.
AOSP / LOS / RR really should be a lot faster and smoother than EMUI 8 for HN8 in its stock form ... there's so much crap on it, and some of the stock apps are really bulky.
On that note, I'd strongly recommend that anyone who's on stock disables and revokes permissions from the Huawei Gallery app and installs an open, lightweight alternative. I'm using the Gallery from Simple Tools and have it set as default. Massive improvement in speed and lack of lag. The Huawei one slows things down seemingly even when open in the app drawer but not focused.

i tried it ... issue is mainly, that only sim slot 2 works - which also serves as sdcard-slot for me a no-go but if you don't use an sdcard, try it out.
Also, camera didn't work at all

Going to wait until the next OK release of LOS / RR.

New Resurrection Remix version is out, including network switch fix and screen tearing fix (the scrolling performance issue) on Hi3650 (HN8 is Hi3650) devices.
Assume new LOS version will be forthcoming very soon too.
Will probably wait for that, but if anyone tries the RR, do post your experience. Particularly those who've tried the much better (than 528) 535 stock.

I flashed RROS and OmniROM yesterday. Quite fluid experience, camera works.
Sim1 still not working (my main focus)
If you don't use an SD card, try it out, i think it will be fun

I would really like to use it but I need the SD!
However I'm glad the camera works.
I hope that in the future the problem of the sim will be solved too.

Deep Sleep appears to be broken on Hi3650 and Hi3660 on all the ROMs. They're looking into the issue.

i used RR Beta 3 on honor 9. Front com.huawei.camera can take pictures, but files are not saved.

Does Oreo or Pie bring significant performance changes from Nougat?

Basically, and I'll make this short so I don't ramble, if this is a side/wifi phone where all I need it for is gaming and music, does upgrading bring anything that people 'cant live without', or is staying with an older version that has had more time to be customized a better option? I'm on Pie right now, but it's one of those things I really can't tell without setting aside time to test/experiment and focus, which I haven't ;p

Compared to nougat, the custom rom status of Oreo and Pie is miles ahead and better.....yes, there are some bugs here and there but those are minors and won't hinder your day to day usage and not to mention that even some of those bugs are being fixed and will be ironed out in the next few months of update.....recently the camera issues has been rectified and by the next updates, the camera should work flawlessly without any crashes.....even GCAM is working perfectly on the rom.....try Pixel Experience if you want, updates normally come on a monthly basis and the latest camera build prop fix posted at Pg 60-62 fixes many camera crashes.....
The only bugs which are left are normally based on the rom and its sources and normally gets fixed in the next update

Yes,4k recording still now doesn't work in footej camera or in Gcam, but if you really need 4k recording,use the Filmic Pro camera, it will allow you to record at 4k with variable frame rates.
In terms of performance,there are some internal improvements but for day to day scenario it is more than enough, in short you\ll be able to play PUBG at low/medium settings at 30 fps ......
What we really need is a kernel developer who can make some good custom kernels which will help in performance improvements and increase overall stability and feature array across the board....
So, in short the custom rom status is better than ever for le 2, right now ..... and this is coming from a guy who was there from the beginning when CodeWorkz was developing the nougat rom for the device....

Well then, I guess Ill stick with Pie :0 Guess Im just used to windows, to where when 10 came out, you were able to upgrade for free from 7, and dx12 was supposedly ready to be supported, so i figured, get the new directx, get to make my OS legal, why not?
Hardly any games use dx12 still to this day. Compatibility with games and such was funky, especially with scaling. Audio software like Audacity had, and still has, bugs which arent there for win7. Hardware certificates had issues for quite a while (esp Asus hardware) so i couldnt us3 my network card.
Ive prolly gone back and forth like 4 times, until i decided to just stick with 10. So i figured there might be similar issues with a phone that wasnt planned to be updated with a new os to run better with an older version.

Mi9 ROM without BUGS

Dear All,
I want to switch to AOSP from MIUI if possible. Are there any ROM's for Mi9 which doesn't have any bugs/functionality broken in AOSP. For me the camera, bluetooth, fingerprint, batterylife are very important.

AOSP based ROMs tend to be buggier than MIUI, you can either try yourself or browse each ROM's thread and see for yourself what issues people are reporting. Achieving 100% bug free is near impossible, today's OSes are too complex to be tested thoroughly with limitless configurations from one person to another. At least MIUI gives guarantee for conditions they test, most AOSP based ROMs only state "you tell me" in the bug section, showing that the ROM is lightly tested only.

Sadly there is no Bug free aosp rom and i think there will never be one. The Best you can do is using stock rom or xiaomi.eu rom and debloat it if you dont want/need miui stuff, there are two or three threads related to debloat.

I'm on extendedui everything looks functional so fare. Only have few problems with automatic brightness and stuttering Bluetooth streaming but didn't take time to try to fix this issue.
