Question of curiosity; Is it possible, in theory, to enable HDR10 on the OnePlus 3T? - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Question in the title really. I'm getting a OnePlus 3T because it's the clearly sensible choice for my wants and needs. But one thing it's missed compared to newer phones, HDR. Seeing as it's using the same display technology as many other phones, would it not be possible to get an open HDR standard like HDR10 on the phone? Am I a nit-wit who knows nothing about how this all works on Android? Both?
Thanks.

HDR is a standard the includes more colors than the ~16 million commonly used in 32 bit rgb. This is achieved by defining colors with more than 16 intensities for the R, G and B diodes. I'm pretty sure you have design the screen to display at HDR; it's not going to be able to process color info at greater than 32 bit if it wasn't.
Anyways, it's not like there's much HDR content to use at this time anyways. A few generations of phones will probably be released before mainstream HDR content begins to take hold.

The display have to be capable of displaying the HDR range of colours. There are tons of AMOLED displays out there that can't display HDR and I would assume OnePlus wanted to advertise if the panel in the 3T had this capability. Since it's one of the newer "buzzwords" for mobile devices.

No, it's a hardware feature that the OP3T doesn't have.

Blurry Vision? (QHD Display)

EDIT: Is it just me or is this normal for QHD or display of this size to exhibit scrolling blur. Whilst browsing using chrome or XDA app anytime I scroll I find that nothing is crisp it seems to be blurry until the scrolling comes to a stop. With this type of quality display I expected better, or am I just being too picky? Anyone else notice this or have the same issue.
The display is QHD (2k) nor UHD (4k). Also there is no scrolling blur for me when I use chrome or XDA. Did you change anything in the phone?

My bad, lol... I haven't changed a thing. Adaptive brightness set at default ambient display switched on. No other changes, not rooted ATM, just stock??
I just got one with project Fi and coming from an HTC M8 I see the scroll blur. Makes me wonder about OLED TVs.
I've never seen this issue. Are you sure it is a display artifact and not some kind of rendering / performance improvement for scrolling in stock?
I'm using a custom rom.
What you could do is try and record your screen using an app like this...https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mistygames.screenrecord. If the issue doesnt appear on the video but does appear to your eyes, then it is the screen. If it is on the video, it is your software.
Like I said, never seen it myself, though that doesnt mean its not there,

All TV technologies, when new are inferior to previous technologies that they replaced. The previous technology has always had time to develop. For instance, LCD TVs are pretty good now, but my 2006 and also 2009 LCD TV's have terrible motion "jerk". I still use that 2009 TV.
OLED have only been out what? 2 years on TVs? Yeah I wouldn't necessarily buy a 2 year old model.
If this issue is a screen issue, it's worth noting that the screen on the N6 is old OLED technology. It is not up to date, like the Samsung Note 4.

High frame rate video recording possible?

Now that the 6p and 5x has high frame rate recording, will this be possible to be ported to the Nexus 6? The hardware should be up for it, shouldn't it?
No, the new Nexus phones have different CPUs and image sensors to be capable of the higher frame rate recording.

Well, see the sensor should be able to record 1080/60p according to Sony, can't link because of few posts. But it's on the website for imx214.
And the cpu should have no problem either, so I don't see why it isn't possible hardware-wise.

sensor should, and our cpu can handle it(recording slow-mo too). but our device isnt made to handle it for some reason.
Likely due to the memory and other hardware being unable to support it. The bandwidth requirements for it are likely huge, so you need everything working together, and if guess one item isn't capable of handling the throughput properly.

Both cpu and camera supports it(check oneplusone or nexus 5 with l camera), but thanks to Google marketing they would not bring this new features to nexus 6, unlikely but possible.

Is the memory fast enough to support it? What about the emmc flash chip? There is more to capturing high-frame rate video than having a capable image sensor and CPU. Yes, they're big parts of it, but not everything.

I'm not going to start a discussion about hardware limitations or how important memory speed etc, the thing is; do nexus 5 has advantages over nexus 6? do one plus one has very high differences than nexus 6? No, this cpu can support 55 Mp camera and better than opo plus, gpu is better, memory same, ois and other stuff and do you really believe that we dont have this because hardware limitations? Google always does this and will continue doing this. After enough some time (6P and 5X get boring) they will give us camera v3, until then we had to dig 4K crap.

Go get a slow memory card, put it in a DSLR camera, and see if you can take pictures as far as the image sensor is capable of. Maybe you don't think it matters, but it does. My GPU on my computer is capable of 4K resolutions, why won't my monitor display 4K? Again, if one piece of hardware doesn't support taking video or images at a given resolution and frame rate, then it doesn't matter what the rest is capable of.
Then again, I'm sure you have the exact hardware design specs and everything is great and its actually capable of 300 fps at 8K...

OK it matters of course and let's say we have a slow memory and ram (we can record 4k @30fps though), how come nexus 5 can do it? Btw this feature was around for a time but Google itself did not looked into it, and I'm sure with a little bit hacking they can do it but Google rarely give backward compatibility to their devices except os of course.
Maybe the Nexus 5 has different hardware, just a thought? I mean, it is coming from a different OEM and from a different time period, so that would be the first logical guess. Second guess is that, given encryption is enabled by default and that affects the throughput on R/W actions, that it is preventing us from high FPS recording. I didn't design the phone, so it's all speculative. Unless you know a Google or Motorola engineer, you're likely never going to get the actual answer.
Either way though, bloody annoying.
[email protected] is literally the same bandwidth as [email protected] If the hardware can handle the bandwidth of [email protected], the only limitation left is the speed of the sensor. If Sony's sensor can handle the speed required for 60-120fps, then the only limitation left is arbitrary software. Is there a setting in android to make that available, or is it a closed source driver limitation?

Worth buying for 250€/300$

Hi.
I've got an offer to buy a 1 month old Nokia 8 for 250 euro/300 dollars.
I've been looking at the Nokia 7 plus which is about 390 euro/460 dollar in my country.
I've got a Iphone 7 as it is, but i really wanna go back to Android now that i finally have the option and my all time favorite phone is Nexus 1, so i want so close to stock android as possible.
The biggest fear i've got is the camera. I don't want anything worse then i got today. Would you say it's worse/same/better?
Which one would you buy if you had the chance?
Thanks in advance!
Look at the specs. You will see the Nokia 8 much better than 7th.
NOKIA 8 is one of the most underrated telefon, SD 835 and 250 € it's a great deal.

You can replace it with Google camera app and you get premium feeling.
Depends on what you want the phone for... For me I like to try new new new, Android never my main phone, just a playground, I want to try AOSP, I like to try latest Android... My main phone is iPhone.
At the moment Nokia is not keeping up to their promise, they're busy with launching more models and Nokia 8 is not getting their May Security Patch yet, and it's not Project Treble... Camera also has no Pro Manual mode yet.
So if you want a long lasting software patching phone I suppose any of their new Android One is better...
2 days ago I was so tempted to sell off my 6 months old Nokia 8 to replace with Mi Mix 2s because of Android P beta preview. Even my Mi 5 running LineAge OS has May Security Patch!
Updated: just tried out Google camera (as others suggested) on Nokia 8, it crash my phone when I turn on Motion option, and HDR set to High quality isn't great, mainly just over exposed compared to Medium (Default).

Premium feel is when the camera works fluently without mods. Even with mods the camera is mediocre and can't compete with any flagships past few years.

You're either a hater or you haven't held a Nokia 8 in your hands that uses Google Camera.
The results I get with this thing are better than most of the recent flagships and almost matches the images you can get on a Pixel 2.
Pls refrain from posting bull$h!t and confusing the OP. Thx.
I'm neither of what you accuse. I'm just not giving false hope for OP coming from iPhone 7 that Nokia 8 camera is on par with competition.

You can get a little better results with mods of course, but it won't fix the limitations of that Sony sensor. It's still slow and mediocre in low light / indoors.

The difference is day and night. It's not "a little better". Low light as well - drastically different than the default camera app processing.
Pls end your nonsense. It's HMD's fault that they screwed up the camera app. But this is a huge and significant mod that breathes new life into this phone's camera capabilities.
The camera really is bad , i have the nokia 8 and i agree
But also agree that with google camera it works a thousand times better and it has no problem matching the quality of the photos of iphone 7
Regarding to everything else , nokia 8 is better in everything , snapdragon 835 is just fabulous , ram management is also good
Batttery life , power and everything else is close to the iphone 7 , if you want to go back to android , sell iph7 , win big money and buy nokia 8 , is the best choice

Installing another manufacturer's algorithms won't fix the slow shutter speed and low light capabilities of the 1.12 um sensor.
Every android phone that i've tried has some pluses and minuses in google camera app mods. Usually low light images are better but that's it, then you might experience glare in day shots or something else.. oh and you lose all the gimmicks that the oem has put on its software/hardware (nokia 8 dual lens for example and ozo sound in video).
So it's a hit or miss.. Especially when there are no apks that are optimized for nokia 8.
And believe me, i would love to be wrong in this, but in this current state the camera is mediocre.. with or without mods. I hope nokia would use that second lens to improve low light..

Agree, I spend more money (on non Chinese brands) because of Nokia's quality, it's losing the purpose of pay a premium for Zeiss Lens and not able to benefit the Dual or PIP features in the stock app. The lens (and it's features) and USB 3 was the only reason Nokia worth the premium for, else it is just a Mi 6.

S10 Astrophotography!

Hello everyone, I'm here to ask you if you have had experience with astrophotography and S10, more specifically capturing pictures of night sky, or even Milky Way. My first experience of astrophotography and smartphone was with Galaxy S7, I could take nice photos of stars (Milky way was impossible to shoot). I have tried with S10 and same settings in Pro Mode (10 seconds exposition, more or less same ISO and White Balance), but the result has not been the same, pictures are even worse (more noise, stars not clear as in S7's pictures). I'm glad to know if you have more experience with this, because after Pixel 4 and P30 Pro I asked myself if S10 can take the same pictures. For example, GCam's new version has an own function for astrophotography, it would be nice if even S10 can have his version through porting.

I have the Galaxy Note 10 plus, and likewise, I too have been deeply disappointed with the astrophotography results. My settings were essentially identical to yours using 'Pro' mode, and I believe the camera technology in our two phones is exactly the same. Even the raw pictures displayed terrible artifacts. I'm not sure if 'banding' or 'contouring' would correctly describe what I saw, but the sky was broken up into sections that looked something like a jigsaw puzzle put together.
Eric
Calm down guys, i understand your dissapointment, but this astrophotography trend started way after the s10 family came to the market... Anyway, it's more of a "software trick" than anything related to hardware itself, so we can almost certanly expect Sammy will add that feature via software update. I believe it will come with android 10. Why you may ask, well because they already added 30s exposure time in android10 beta... So it's not farfetched to believe some kind of astrophotography mode is coming. But take notice, even on other phones that do support it, you apsolutely need a tripod or some kind of stative, the phone has to be very still to enable astrophotography...
Yup very disappointing ive also tried it even with TRIPOD! the stars become blurry (pro mode 10 sec) so sad.. maybe they will fix it sometime.. (google pixel is good, P30 is over saturation- still look good and alot better then S10, some will like it over the pixel)
Like i said, we will most probbably get the astrophotography mode, it's just a matter of time, but i see no reason why you can't capture great pictures of the night sky with pro mode. Especially if you know the right settings and have a tripod. I took some amazing pics way back with my old S7, now with S10 they come out even better... Btw, you can't capture the Milky Way unless you are in complete darkness and away from any light pollution...
I didn't have the time to test the new pro mode (30sec exposure) in android10 beta, but i will soon. If you want i can send you links so you can see some of my photos for yourself.
I'm calm...
Thank you for your input, and fear not I was not hyperventilating. I shoot astrophotography from time to time with my Nikon DSLR's and occasionally linking that up with my Meade ETX-125 telescope.
So I have a solid foundation and understanding of the hardware requirements to properly shoot the night sky. I have also enjoyed using my Galaxy Note 10 plus with the Zhiyun Smooth 4 gimbal along with the excellent Filmic Pro software (app).
Would not have purchased that additional equipment had I not been extremely impressed with the optics of the camera technology in these phones both in terms of video and still photography. I never thought smartphones would be competitive with prosumer camera technology but under certain circumstances no question we have reached that point. It is with those higher expectations, that led me to be surprised when the quality took a nosedive when attempting to shoot long exposure night photography. I always attempt to shoot with the longest exposure and the lowest ISO to minimize noise.
But the final results were still riddled with noise and artifacts, even the raw output. I'm not upset by this, in fact as recently as a year ago I would not have even thought of attempting this with a smartphone. So I just chalk it up to reaching the limitations of where things are at this moment. I will be interested to explore the Android update to which you referred and maybe that will greatly improve things. Under normal circumstances, I'm still amazed at the capabilities are these cameras.

Nice to know you're calm , it was nothing more than a figure of speech - i bet you already knew that
Anyway, i wrongly asumed i was dealing with a rookie but it's nice to see you know a great deal about night photography... As i sad, i really doubt Pixel has better optics or camera hardware in general in comparison to a Galaxy S10/N10, it all comes down to software as we all know. IMO, Google has mastered night photos and now astrophotography mainly because of their Ai software/hardware technology and ofcourse the sheer experience. They are after all "in the forefront of AI"... Also, i believe Samsung could do something similar if they wanted, it all depends on the market and popularity of that specific feature. They don't lack the funds as they invest billions in R&D. Ofcourse i could be wrong, this is just my opinion.
Which lens/sensor are you using for this? Telephoto lens/sensor is weaker in low light situations (smaller sensor, smaller aperture).
I have also an S7 Edge and the night mode of the S10 is indeed comparable (identical sensor?). But that's only the normal wide sensor/lens!
Specs S10 main:
12 MP, f/1.5-2.4, 26mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS
12 MP, f/2.4, 52mm (telephoto), 1/3.6", 1.0µm, AF, OIS, 2x optical zoom
16 MP, f/2.2, 12mm (ultrawide), 1.0µm, Super Steady video
Specs S7 main:
12 MP, f/1.7, 26mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS
LOL, I would bet money that the average buyer of the S10 even knows or cares what astrophotography is. If it's that important to someone then I'd suggest researching phones and buying one that does this rather than being disappointed in something the phone wasn't designed for. Hell, that Samsung engineer sitting in that little cubicle in Seoul, South Korea probably doesn't give a rat's a** whether that phone will take pictures of the stars or not.
What about Gcam mod, that has built in astrophotography which I think works only on Android 10 for some version of Gcam.
Hmm... quality improved
So after I ran across this thread, I went out again last night for kicks, and the artifacts were greatly reduced. Still noisy/grainy, but to be expected from almost any camera not carefully configured for these challenging circumstances. I'm wondering if one of the several OS updates I've had since the first attempt two months ago contributed?
To Kemby13: Of course, no problem, your posts were great and helpful. I couldn't resist a little tongue-in-cheek myself.
To Sonic 67: Great tips and worth double-checking that.

You don't need to, or the sky will "move". The trick is using a telescope or even a binocular to gather more light. Use higher ISO if needed.

Hello everyone , i have s10 and i am really interested in astrophotography. I a very hyped for new update(one ui2.0) because in leaks there is astrophotography mode. So before this software is launched, please guys can you suggest what settings should i use to record night sky??
Thank you in advance
I think the problem is on optical stabilizer itself. Even on dslr cam you need to turn off oss when using a tripod. thats why we get blurry pic on s10 -10s shutter. I can take a better night sky pic using vivo v17 pro. Coz the software of the phone give us a real Pro mode. I cant wait a long 30s shutter and more serious pro mode of samsung update in a future for our s10 family.

The only con is the loss of the Micro lens from the X3 Pro, which was, in my opinion, one of its coolest features. I'm also very curious about the Mediated 9000 performances and definitely the MariSiliconX processing.
Concerning the design, nothing very exciting so far, but the white version is the one that's catching my eyes.
I'm really waiting to see how its competing against the OnePlus 9 Pro, that has quite great camera lenses and picture processing.

Depending on the specs you base the "competition" on. I think the only thing they have that is similar is their OS - both based on Android 12. Visually, Find X5 Pro is better, though it is subjective.

Unimpressed, to be honest. Bought the Find X5 and the display and camera are both less vibrant than my Fund X2 Neo. It also has terrible viewing angles. The screen has a greenish hue when angled slightoy. Edge lighting doesn’t work. As for the HDR on video playback, it’s barely noticeable. Really disappointed with it, to get honest.
