Recommend me a ROM - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hello XDA
I know there is no such thing as the best ROM but I was hoping to do a little cheating and save my self some reading and get some opinions on what would fit me the best.
I use my phone as a business phone and thus my battery is dying constantly. I got ALOT of SMS and my phone is constantly slowing down. I want something that won't seem like a old device.
I want to root to install a new ROM and battery tweaks. Here are my requirements:
MUST be stable
Smooth
Good battery life
I want something I don't have to constantly tweak. With my note 4 I essentially changed so much that at the end it became such a nuisance trying to keep modding etc. I want to set this up and forget about it, unless needed.
Thanks !

Use Paranoid Android 7.2.1

Vertex OS

There are people that use RR and have insane battery life, but i recommend hydrogen os because it's officially supported by Oneplus and have a better battery life than oxygen os

Thanks, I'll look into this!

I understand where you are coming from, but from a practical point of view, if someone recommended a ROM, you may find your experience different from theirs. Happens all the time. Second, it's a good idea to read first. I just got this phone. All I have done is read threads here at xda. Not even so much ROMs, but reading about the phone. This step alone has saved me from myself in the past. Makes it easier to troubleshoot problems.

I agree. I have tested enough roms to conclude that for the 3T there's no point in trying to find something better than stock
Perhaps only something purely based on oxygen os, but more debloated, like freedomOS

basically it doesnt matter, 99% is all placebo.
TugaPower is out-of-box really good, which is LineageOS with some small mods (Viper4Android Audio mod ie.)

good battery life, camera comparable to oxygen os, stable and fast rom , theme option for people who don't use substratum theme engine

Beta with Magisk for root and a kernel of your choice. Get some performance and battery benefits from the kernel (if that's the type you decide to flash). Debloat it. Use Greenify and BetterBatteryStats to eliminate wakelocks.

Smooth, stable and substratum suppprt

I guess stock is the best choice here for you. It has no additional battery hungry features like viper but is still stable. You may consider flashing a kernel instead and I would hardly recommend you to read into them since that's the best way to get to know to new kernels.

I would say oos..if u want a flawless stock experience with better battery life, use freedom os..
I personally use oos open beta 12( rooted with magisk) with elemental x kernel..it gives me good battery and flawless performance..apps like substratum and viper 4 arise works fine..

Thanks for all the replies. I tried out RR and had an issue with the WiFi dropping - since this was a business phone I decided not to flash a custom ROM. I am now on OOS open beta, the latest one. Loving the parallel apps feature!
Now to get into theming and modding. I've got the basics down already like greenify, BBS.
Any recommendations on rooted apps? What have I missed in the last year or so

[Q] Which is the best rom for...?

Well First off I gotta say some of the things here are pretty damn super.
But the thing I find is most of these roms take up too much battery all too quickly, even when i barely use my phone.
So which rom should i try and stick in order to maximise my battery life?
Quick response would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Well, the question is what you really want to have in your ROM and what is obsolete for you. Eye-candy needs power....
Switch of all automatic Facebook, email, weather, stock, twitter etc. updates, switch off 3G, dim the light and use wifi only when necessary - this will increase your battery life significantly.
And you might try the link in my signature as well.
I'm not an expert but according to my experience for cooked ROMs,
- Xara & Vision and (this ROM is similar to Jeperlea's) is very good bettery drainage but the HTC Calculator annoy me very much. Anyway, -Jeperlea has been back to continue his ROM, but I really feel boring of his ROM's inconsistence
- Russell Eclair's, his ROM is also very impressive for me, unfortunately his Final ROM has some trouble in the first usage. Over all, like it.
- SGXU XPERIA UNOFF, like this ROM too, unfortunately some program isn't working properly.
- 826X-peria, some version is great in battery drainage and performance but some isn't. This ROM is also stopped due to stolen willyung's gadget.
The worst; Energy ROM, I dunno know why people flash this **** to their phone because it's the worst ROM I've ever used. Good interface (Kinda boring), but really poor performance, u can't use this for daily used.
Sorry to the OP for slightly drifting off topic.

Well, maybe because not everybody acts according to your standards.
I won't go through all the "fantastic" ROMs you listed above just to verify whether Energy ROMs are that bad or not. It's just strange that you kind of recommend ROMs which obviously have problems running at all and contain annoying software.
><(((ยบ>
I am happy with Energy, it is way more performant than others I tried before - and it just works out of the box.

Which one original android ROM is the best for Xiaomi mi5 is best?

Sorry for spamming thread and lame question, which one is better, AOSP, CyanogenMod or any other original debloated Android ROM?
And when Xiaomi Mi5 will get many custom roms and official CM support?
Deez nuts
you should try out yourself, it's depends from person to person....
There's no such thing.

It seems that CM will be official for gemini (Mi5) from now on, thanks to xiaomi releasing it's kernel sources a while back.
Althoug many custom roms were already available, without a proper kernel their performance was very poor. So, if you don't want to test which one will suit you the best, I recommend you to wait a few more days to allow devs to start creating their own custom kernel versions, so the device can perform on its max
I have been using CM13 by bgcngm along with the Falcon Kernel by Harrynowl and so far it's amazing. I've had no issues with this configuration and can say it's WAY better than MIUI. You check it out.

Well let's see...
MIUI has this annoying feature (probably to conserve battery life) that whenever you close an app from the recents tray, anything that you had enabled in the Accessibility settings got disabled.
Secondly, MIUI's customization is nowhere as close as to CM's. I know MIUI looks great and all and the theme engine is pretty good but I still prefer stock over it.
There's no Google Now On Tap on MIUI.
MIUI doesn't let apps run in the background (again, to conserve battery), but it's kinda too agressive. Like not even Greenify can run for long periods.
Can't root MIUI unless you're using the China Developer ROM.
I could go on and on but then I'd be nitpicking on MIUI. These are a few reasons from the top of my head.
Also, I've been following this thread for battery optimization. It's pretty darn good and lets me go through 2 days on a single charge.
MIUI has better battery life than stock CM. No question about that. But CM's strengths far outweigh it's weaknesses.

Really man!!! I never try any other ROM than MIUI - Currently is MIUI 8 and it is realizable, durable and fast. Can you please share what functions are better?
I would say cm14.1 is best. Except the camera. The dev can't port it perfectly. Otherwise it is perfect
I entirely agree with you.

You do know that on MIUI battery saving mode is activated my default right? Is not that hard to disable it.
MIUI do let application to run in background. You just need to turn off MIUI optimisation and set Memory optimisation to "off" in Developer Settings.

Yeah, well it doesn't really stop killing the apps. Right now I'm running CM 14.1 and it is AMAZING. The quick switch between apps is phenomenal. And unlike MIUI, it actually keeps my apps the way they were when I last used them.
I guess you did not use MIUI much

Secondly, MIUI's customization is nowhere as close as to CM's. I know MIUI looks great and all and the theme engine is pretty good but I still prefer stock over it. it is subjective. There are lot more nice looking themes for miui then for cm ("nice" is of course subjective too)
There's no Google Now On Tap on MIUI. Wrong, just tested and it works great.
MIUI doesn't let apps run in the background (again, to conserve battery), but it's kinda too agressive. Like not even Greenify can run for long periods. Wrong, same as the first point. You can play a game today, then put it in background and resume it exactly at the same state in the next day.

I really wonder why people spread already wrong proven rumors CM is basically an alpha rom with numerous bugs in it. It can not compete with MIUI for a daily driver.

Huh. You make some excellent points. I was referring to an older build. Maybe the first MIUI 6 one, IIRC. However, it is my personal taste. I can never switch back to MIUI after CM 14.1. It's just so good. I'm not saying that MIUI is bad. It's just that CM 14 is REALLY good. Another issue (and I may be nitpicking here), is that I use LastPass a lot and it requires to be switched on in the accessibility services. From what I had gathered, I had to keep turning the Accessibility setting on every time I close the app/restart my device. If there's a work around, do let me know....
Maybe MIUI is different now... If you can tell me how I'd go about rooting the Global MIUI 6 ROM, I might just give it another shot!

Hi,
as Valdimir already stated, just flash the superuser zip and thats it. Btw. we are currently on MIUI v8 and v9 is around the corner. I do not want to bash CM. It is surely a good room, but I would not choose nor recommend it over a nice and stable miui rom. In fact I wonder why people do not buy the oneplus device, if they plan to use it with CM. It has almost the same specs.
cheers

I'm not bashing CM neither. I just don't recommend it as dailg driver yet. And probably never due Xiaomi keeping larg part of their code close-sourced. And as I am concern, CM will die in few days (31st December). LineageOS is too far away in the future for me. A new infrastructure must be found, Cyngn paid developers must be replaced, a new fund source be found. Personally I don't see LineageOS as same level of functionality as CyanogenMod anytime soon. Time will tell.
I can't tell anyone "Hey! Install CM14.1! It's amazing! Well...is not perfect yet...but hopefully all the bugs will be fixed and camera will work as same quality level as MIUI in the remaining 5 days.

New user coming in, wondering what I should do with this guy.

Hello! I'm essentially a new user for things like rooting and all that crazy rom stuff when it comes to android. I've only ever used my Huawei Mate 8 to do things like rooting, twrp and rom installation. Xposed bricked the phone whenever i tried to do it so i just rooted stock and left it. I'm lookin to get this dude to be fast and have nice battery life so i can hang on to it for a year or so. I was wondering what things i should do to achieve this while keeping it safe from bricking and doing other weird things to it. For instance, Im not sure what is wrong with my mate 8. But even though twrp works on it, i cannot install any roms on it. The roms never load in and on a backcheck i can see that the storage space is unused. Just not sure what happened.
What things do you guys do to keep the phone running well for a long time? Keep it fast and smooth. Ive never used xposed before so I would have to explore that. I really only use root to modify the kernel to save a bit of battery. I dont really want to go crazy but if i could squeeze an average of 6-8 hours of screen on time with this dude I would do all the crazy things.
Consider me a new user due to the very low support with the Mate 8. Havent really explored android as much as i wish i could have with that phone.
This is a new phone. So no stable or official ROM is available yet. And many xposed modules don't work. We don't even have xposed for Nougat. Whereas most of the custom ROMs available are of Nougat.
Also, we'll mostly get an update this week.
I'd wait for the update. In the mean time, there'll be new ROMs. And the existing ones will be less buggy.
There phone is anyway blazing fast and gives a great battery backup. Even if you keep it in battery saver mode, it's quite fast
But if you feel restless, rooting, flashing ROMs, etc is quite easy. You just need to read about it before doing it. You can always ask anything over here. The are many awesome people here willing to help you out. It's your call. You get to revert back to stock ROM anyway.
Is the nougat beta better than marshmallow? Battery life better or worse or same-y? I'm trying to get the most I can before receiving this phone.

Best Marshmallow 6.0 ROM for Z3C

Hello everyone!
As i know SLIMM is the best ROM for this device. But now it is discontinued, so there is the question: is it still the best?
And please owners of this device who tried different ROMs, give the advice, which one should I install (i want to install stock based custom MM ROM).
For me in priority is functionality, stability and performance coupled with good battery life.
So I have a question about kernel: should I install EliteKernel 3 instead stock kernel (or maybe Advanced Stock kernel)?
I'm not a newbie, but there are really a lot of ROMs and i'm a bit confused...
Also, are there some good MODs for this device(like Cyberian Camera)?
P.S. Sorry for my not ideal english.

I use Concept Plus ROM with the Kernel 12c custom kernel.
Having an amazing experience with it so far.
The only problem I have is bluetooth headphones but if you dont use bluetooth accessories this shouldn't matter much.
For camera mods I use Cyberian(yes even if not compatible).
Even though it ain't compatible part of it does work, the camera app which comes with the mod doesn't work but everything else does. The camera snaps photos much faster and overall better quality.

Well I haven't used it personally but I believe it was definitely the most popular and best ROM for Z2 before it was ported to Z3c.
It has lots and lots of customization options as you may have saw.
And by reading the thread replies from all of these ROMs,I have saw that people don't really complain much about issues regarding ExistenZ rom.
The best way to know is to try it out, create a backup and flash the ROM,if it ain't working well revert back to your backup and you are solid.
Concept Rom may sometimes get weird. By that I mean it had the lollipop's YouTube and Video Recording issue, though that can be fixed by changing some system file parameters. I used Concept and I loved the design, stock Google design and I loved it. I've used SliMM for ages. Whenever I tried a new ROM I just had to revert back to SliMM. Because it has the best battery life for me with the best performance. I'm using ExistenZ ROM now, hadn't have any issues but to be honest, battery life is worse than SliMM also the performance too (even though a little bit). I'm using ExistenZ right now because it has many customizations in itself which means lack of many xposed modules, which means (somewhat) better stability. I'm thinking of reverting back to SliMM though, FYI. I tried the EXPERIENCE ROM too. And it was a total disaster for me. Because I didn't like the modifications that Marilia has made into the ROM and I simply couldn't live with it, the phone felt a bit too childish. All in all, the best was always SliMM for me. If you have any question, shoot it mate! (I haven't tried the MX ROM)

I am using Experience and i like it. Even adoptable storage shows free space right. Battery is good, about 2 days with 5 hours screen on time. Supersu update from playstore works fine. Very good and stable rom. I have tested AOXP and MX rom. Both works but Experience was easy to make look like stock with 16 GB adoptable storage.

The only proper answer for this question is and will ever be: Try them and find it out for your own.
You are already know the four candidates and now its up to you... All four are working. None of them is a failure!
As you see from the given answers everyone has other preferences and whishes.
There is no better or not here...
But if you want to:
Try all four ROMs, use each for one week and make a Rundup of them. Sure - this will reflect only your optinion in particualr but may help other to decide. As faar as I know such an comparrision is not existing up to now.
Actually this is want you are askiung for...

I'm glad that there is choice between good ROMs. Maybe I will make a comparison later when I recieve replacement parts for my Z3c (if I really won't know which ROM to install).
Does EliteKernel 3 have better performance then Stock or other?

Yes, EliteKernel v3 and after makes phone experience smoother and games r more fluid with some other options available too :highfive:

Six months since 7.0 and still unsure, Marshmallow or Nougat on N6

I've been very happy with MM on my N6 and still get great battery life and performance. I'm comfortable with ROMs/mods and my phone is pretty much where I want it in terms of functionality and UI. After months of debate, I'm still unsure if it's worth moving to Nougat (and not impressed with O preview either). I'm so unconvinced that I don't even feel like investing the time in testing 7.x particularly after reading posts of battery or compatibility issues. I'm not trying to be "stuck in the past" but just don't see a convincing reason to update.
The last dedicated thread I saw on MM vs N was from Oct 2016, any new opinions since then?
I'm thinking about moving back to MM because of the terrible battery life and performance on nougat.
In the same boat. MM seems to give me better battery life but Nougat seems a little bit more snappier.
I've only been on 7.0 for a couple of weeks, but no complaints.

Hey... Flashed Pure Nexus with EX Kernel as soon as its nougat iteration appeared and never looked back. Well I can't really compare about battery life as my phone is now 2 years old. Still it performs very well, nothing to complain about. Screen on time is the same and standby is better on Android 7 i think. Of course stock firmware is not as polished as it should, but custom ROMs are here to change that. I don't need that much mods on my phone anymore except theme, ad blocker, theme ready apps and maybe a few other things.
What kind of incompatibility issues are you talking about?
Well, I understand you don't want to waist your time , but it's just a matter of backup/flash/test. You won't loose anything and if you don't like it, you can always revert back to MM anyway. I think a weekend is more than enough to decide if it's worth it for you or not.
I usually prefer testing things myself and not based on people statements. Because everyone has his tastes and they unlikely match mines...
Cheers...
I'm on 7.1.1 stock with Franco Kernel, encryption disabled and F2FS filesystem.
No problems with stability, lags or battery life. In fact, I usually get around 5h+ of screen on time, which is pretty good for a 2 years old phone.
Usually, battery life and stability are user fault. Of course we can't say everything is related to users... But if you configure correctly your apps permissions, don't install anything out of the play store and don't do things like undervolting... You should be good to go.
Regards,
Rafael

I'd have to go back and look at the threads I've read, the only thing I recall being a deal-killer was not being able to use net.tethering under Nougat (is that still an issue)? I've been very happy with Pure (MM) with Franco on my other devices but have kept stock on my N6. I agree with testing it out myself, just need to find some time, but generally trust opinions on XDA.
Phone has been solid for years and rooted with Nova, adaway, lightflow, multiwindow, and tethering has met my needs. Maybe I'm just being lazy or in a rut but definitely would like something more revolutionary to encourage the upgrade.
Thanks for the input everyone, gives me a lot to think about.

Sadly I can't really help you with net.tethering as I don't use it...
Just make a search in Q/A or open a thread if nothing shows up. I'm sure you'll get an answer... :good:
Good luck...
Couple of days with stock 7.1.1 and so far it's fine, nothing that made me thrilled with the update but nothing that makes me want to roll back. Can't say it's snappier than MM or has better battery life, though. Enabled tethering using the usual net.tethering entry as well as 'settings put global tether_dun_required 0' so nothing lost there. Guess if this is the last, full-point update for my beloved N6 I can live with it (until I find an annoyance I can't stand and flash Pure or something else).
Thanks again for everyone's input!
Bought my N6 used back in September. I still have official 7.0 My device has never stuttered or slowed down (outside of extremely low battery and high CPU apps). I have a lot of apps installed, I use it hard, and run some demanding apps (like raw photo conversion) on occasion. And I just clocked 3+ days of battery use with nearly 7 hours of SOT under a variety of uses. I can't imagine not using N on this device.

Curious, what problems do you have in 711? Those issues aside, the OP asked about 7.0 as opposed to 711.
terrible battery life? maybe you need a new battery, I get above 6 SOT hours using Nitrogen ROM

Its all about standby battery life when using a bt device like an android watch. Not going to get into arguements here but have tested and 7.0 doesnt have the bad drain on my unit and 711 absolutely does. Thus cannot be an old battery if the only change i made was OS version and drastic difference in battery drain. 711 has about 2x+ the standby drain with bt on. 7.0 and 6.0 have much better drain
