I am averaging about a day and a half battery life based on pretty frequent usage (novelty hasn't worn off yet) which includes phone calls, internet use, light gaming and YouTube vids and such.
UI experience is great. I have it set up the same as my Nexus 7 and everything is responsive and just happens instantly.
Regarding the other points, performance has been flawless here. No matter what I'm running or how many things I'm running I haven't noticed any slowdown or stutter
It is proving to be an absolute beast of a phone and noticeably quicker than my Nexus 7.
My Nexus 4 Experience:
This phone is quick. I thought the Nexus 7 was blazing, but compare the performance of the 7 to the N4, there is no competition. I haven't seen the N4 slow down at all, and I've been trying to find the most taxing 3d games I can. So multitasking is a non-issue. It just works. Perfectly.
Battery life is impressive (for me), for the past week I have taken my phone off charge at 7:30am and I can make it home from school at around 4pm with 50% battery with light/moderate usage. Moderate usage being sending around 30 texts, light web surfing, taking a handful of photos. If I sit down with it for longer than say 10 minutes playing a 3D game/maps or something demanding like that, then it can chug juice like no tomorrow. If I desperately need the battery to go on for as long as possible, aeroplane mode basically reduces power consumption to 0.
Signal strength massively impacts battery life, I live in a rural area with poor signal (yellow/red on the battery graph) and my battery drains quicker unless I find a 'green' signal strength place. If you live in an urban environment, expect battery life to be better.
I love the stock android UI. It's so fast. I've set it up to be identical to my N7, which is really nice.
I do have the top speaker hissing noise, but in all honesty I forget about it in a call after a while. It's an annoyance, but for £250 I'm willing to put up with it.
It does get hot if you're doing something intensive with it, but that's probably due to glass being a better heat conductor. It's a non issue from what I can see, unless you have very sensitive hands.
My only regret it that it makes my N7 look like a tortoise compared to the blistering speeds of the N4.

Multitasking
The phone is a beast when multi-tasking and glides thru most of the functions I throw at it. My device however heats up especially when playing music. I noticed this when I'm at the gym or when the phone is plugged in car's auxiliary jack. When it heats up is when I notice hiccups and slow downs. I'm not sure if they are related, but I've come to the conclusion that they might be because it only suffers in performance when the phone is hot. And it's not warm it gets not. I can feel the heat with a silicon case and thru my denim. Will look into possibly exchanging if it persists.
Battery life
Battery life to me is equal to if only just a tad better compared to the Gnex. I am hoping that future ROMs from developers will improve it's battery life.
Ui experience
Jellybean is a pleasure to use. I also find it to be graphically appealing especially when personalized to your liking. Love Jellybeans animations and transitions. I'd describe it as sophisticated.
I'm not sure how to feel about the quick settings, as I find it requires more steps for you to actually do what you want to do. Clicking on data for example should just turn off data rather than take me to the data settings.
Any flaws detected
I have the shaking or rattling noise in my unit, but is not enough for me to worry about it. Besides the unusual heat, I have yellow stains on the bottom portion of my screen. I've read that it's the glue and should cure or settle or dry after a few days of use. If it doesn't go away, the heat and yellow stains is enough reason to exchange the device.
Overall performance
I am happy and completely satisfied with the purchase and the upgrade. Even the signal/data is better. And this unit is definitely louder than the GNEX. I just need a case or something. Any recommendations?

Basically, I own a GS3 right now and was thinking of upgrading to an Xperia Z. I realize that a GS4 or HTC One would be more of a proper upgrade but those are out of reach for me financially here.
I mostly use my phone for video playback(movies and such), browsing and the camera. I also use it to a lesser extent for music or gaming(angry birds type of stuff). So the screen and camera upgrade fit in the bill pretty well. I'm sure the extra 1GB of ram wouldn't hurt either. In the end the phone is also drop dead gorgeous and the waterproof/dustproof thing sounds very attractive as well.
However, after doing some research the Xperia Z seems to have a poor battery life when it comes to video playback and camera. Especially compared to the GS3 the differences seem so huge that it just doesn't make any sense. So I've started to wonder whether this upgrade would actually be worth it.
I don't mind charging my phone daily but the estimated 5h40m video playback and camera battery usage seem pretty poor. I was wondering whether any improvements have been made in this department since the initial tests carried out by GSMArena? I can already get about 6-7h in terms of video playback and less than 5h of browsing on my GS3. Would the Z be able to at least match that now or even do slightly better in terms of browsing? Will the upcoming 4.2 upgrade hopefully extend the battery life a bit as well? So, help me out here! :laugh:
No need 4u to upgrade. For those purposes that you do...just stick with the S3 :thumbup:

With your phone usage, i don't think you need to change XZ from SGS3. Just that SGS3 is not a 4G phone the browsing speed may be lower but the battery usage is more. SGS3 also allow you to change battery so it can be useful.. Just that i dont like Samsung "cheap plastic" feel thats why i choose XZ.

But what I was wondering about the most was whether there have been improvements regarding the battery life ever since those tests were carried out. I have been told that there have been firmware upgrades that have improved the battery usage when it comes to multimedia and such. Is there any truth to this or does the battery still drain in 5 hours when it comes to video playback/camera usage etc.?
i am pretty much in the same boat as you...i also had a GS3 & i couldnt upgrade because of financial reasons as well....i got the xperia z after selling of the galaxy & yes...its a pretty darn good update for me...the screen, when you view it dead on, especially with the new update that fixes contrast issues, is EPIC! the performance is miles ahead of the s3, so is the camera. I also watch movies on my phone but i music & gaming are equally important to me. The latest upgrades do improve battery life slightly & you can help it along as well using stamina mode but i am afraid its still not that great... i can make the phone go a day maybe before hitting 15% by playing heavy games like real racing 3 & listening to music & watching some episodes of initial d

Right now I own a Moto X (2013) and I love it mainly because of the size of the screen, it actually fits in my pockets! But as of late, the battery is already draining a bit fast, and the camera has never been very good either. So I'm looking for a phone to replace it that has a better camera, battery and keeps about the same performance. The problem lies in the big sized phones available today! They're huge. I don't want it to exceed the 5.2 inch display size, nor it be larger than 140mm approximately.
So I thought about the Z3C. I also considered the new Xperia M5 (not yet on sale) (145mm long) or even wait for the Z5 Compact. What do you guys recommend? Is the Z3C still worth it?
I think the camera is is pretty good on the Z3C but I am no photographer. It suits my needs well. I think you will have a hard time finding a small phone (or any phone) that matches the battery life of the Z3C. For that reason alone, I think it is work it. I also think the Z3C is a nice looking phone. I also have a 2013 Moto X and loved it until I got spoiled by the Z3C's battery. You should find the Z3C to be faster and have better performance overall.
Z3 battery life is great and it fits in pocket much better than some of the slabs available now.
If you dont want to pay a premium for the absolute latest and greatest but want a phone that just works really well, i think the z3C is pretty good value.
Glass screen protector and decent case are a must though as although IP68 rated, dont think its very "drop proof".
- The Z3C battery life takes a hit with Lollipop though (damn mobile radio active bug), so if you're not satisfied, you can always roll back to KitKat for the best performance.
- The camera's auto-mode is decent in well lit conditions (tends to over-expose), but is sub-par indoors. It lacks sharpness once you zoom in on the picture. It actually excels in some low-light conditions due to the higher ISO, but most people don't need to take photos in a dark room.
- Over all, you won't find a better phone with more features at this price point that actually fits in one hand comfortably. Plus, it's waterproof.
That being said though, the new Z5C is supposed to be announced this week. Wait a few days and see if it's worth the upgrade or not.
Still the best compact phone (< 5") out at the moment. I just find Sony's politics towards homebrew and open source dev going slowly from mediocre to worse.
Z5c may be announced tomorrow so you may as well wait a day and see, but if it's, as rumoured, released with a Snapdragon 810 chip, Z3c may remain on top of the category until the next iteration...
Until the Z4C releases yes.
There is no Z4C - Sony skips a generation for the compacts. It will be a Z5C instead.

I am/was basically in the same situation as you! I also own a moto x 2013 an love it because of the screen size. It has a great feel in the hand, actually usable with one hand and it fits in the pocket nicely. But my battery life has gotten horrible since Lollipop, even with cm 12.1. I don't really care about the camera that much, and the performance was always great although lately its been starting to feel a little sluggish.
I researched for over a month but couldn't find any other good alternatives at this size. The only other option is the galaxy alpha ( but there are various complications with rooting, versions, LTE etc).
I finally gave up and went with the Z3C. Just got mine like yesterday though so I'm still in the process of setting everything up and transferring my stuff over. So far I really like it. It looks and feels nice and premium. It doesn't have as nice of a feel in the hand as the x because the back is flat and not curved. Software wise I will probably miss active display, but it seems like sony also included some neat features. Stereo speakers are just a different (better) experience than the moto speaker on the back. The contrast of the screen isn't as nice as the AMOLED on the x. But I definitely notice it being faster, which is nice. and so far the battery life seems to be amazing. I'll see how it is in a few days once everything is set up and I'm using it more, and then I can let you know. But so far it seems like I made a good decision.

I would go for the new z5 compact , if you dont care about custom roms, then go for the z3c , that is if you care about camera.
overall, get z3c for performance, looks, and cheaper than new z5c.
or z5c if you have money, probably better performance, bit expensive, no root yet.

Before buying/ordering the Z5c I would strongly advise anyone to wait until someone reliable thoroughly tests the Z5c to make sure the Snapdragon 810 version it sports has no heating induced performance issues.
It's not because "they" say the issues have been fixed that you should trust them. Anyway it's your call...
The reviews I've seen show that the camera is still painfully slow between shots. That .003 sec autofocus doesn't do us any good if you have to wait 2 seconds to take the next picture.

Typing this answer from my ZUK Z1 that I have been using since the last 3 months. Before using this phone, I used the MI3 for little over one year after which the motherboard got faulty and it would have costed a bomb to replace it, so thought of buying a new phone instead. I reviewed a lot of phones for one month before zeroing in on the Z1. He is a small review of the device.
Build*- The build quality of the phone is great. I am using the space grey model which has a matte finish at the back. The back has a subtle curve which helps to have a firm grip on the phone. However, I feel you'd still need a back cover as the phone is slim and could slip off from your hand easily.
Chipset*- Coming to the chipset, the Z1 uses a nearly 2.5 yrs old Snapdragon 801 which was a major factor for me choosing this device. I had used the 800 with my MI3 and the performance was phenomenal. Not even once in my year long heavy usage have I faced a single instance of lag or stutter and no matter what I threw at it, it simply knocked it out of the park. So I was looking for a phone that would have the 800 or a similar processor. The 801 is a flagship 32 bit chipset but can chew up any new low end 64 bit chipset like the 410 or 615 easily. The performance on the Z1 is overall smooth with occasional stutters. I still think the 800 was slightly better in terms of performance but there are many things to consider here, so I'd rank the 801 along the same lines as 800. In fact, the 801 excels in some areas which I will get to shortly. So performance wise, Z1 is top notch.
UI*- The Z1 runs on Cyanogen 12 based on Android 5.1 (lollipop). The OS is highly customizable and gives you a stock android experience. There is no bloatware on the OS. The COS 13 was supposed to be released for ZUK Z1 but it hasn't been released yet (not sure if it ever will be). However the CyanogenMod 13 based on Android 6 is available for the Z1.
Display*- The Z1 has a 5.5 inch full HD IPS LCD panel. Even though it's not as sharp and vivid as an AMOLED screen, but it is quite good. The colors are vibrant and the viewing angles are also good.
RAM and Storage*- The Z1 comes with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB internal of which around 58 GB is available to the user. OTG is supported.
Camera*- 13 MP rear and 8 MP front shooters. It has Optical Image Stabilization and the images come out to be pretty good in outdoors and even under artificial lightning.
Heating*- Heating is a big concern for smartphone users these days. Surprisingly, the Z1 has minimal heating when compared to its peers, like the Moto G4 plus, which can heat upto 46C and above with extensive usage (20-30 mins). However, with the Z1, even with over an hour of gaming, I haven't noticed any significant heating issues. The MI3 used to heat more than the Z1 and this is where I think the 801 wins over the 800. Also with calls of over 20 mins, I haven't noticed any heating at all. However, be forewarned that many users have reported abnormal heating with their Z1 devices, so I guess that I just got lucky here.
Gaming*- Played Mortal Kombat X and Dead Trigger 2 and faced little to no lag at all. With MK X, I faced very little stutter at times, but most people won't even notice it. Overall, gaming is very smooth on the Z1. Even heavy games like Asphalt 8 and Nova 3 will run smooth.
Call Quality*- Very good. Haven't faced any issues with call quality, however the reception over 4G in my area is not so strong.
Battery*- 4100 mAh battery, which would easily last for 1.5 to even 2 days with moderate usage. Charging time takes around 2 hrs.
Some things that the Z1 lacks:
1. NFC
2. IR blaster.
3. Box doesn't come with earphones.
4. Front flash
Overall, I feel that the Z1 is a good device that you can buy within a budget of 15K rupees.

How does the development scenario feel like to you? There aren't a lot of ROMs currently. What's the possibility of this getting Nougat (via CM14)?
Also, what would you recommend? This or the SD 650 powered Redmi Note 3?
I got the Mate 10 last week (not PRO) and I'm very impressed with the phone, I've tried a lot of phones and this one is really hard to fault, the only thing is that it's not running stock Android, but with Nova Launcher on it, you can make it feel like it, so no biggy here, now the rest, damn impressed with it, amazing camera, had the S8+ before this one and in my opinion, the pictures are simply amazing... great 6" 2k screen, with the regular 16:9 aspect ratio, so no letter boxing when watching videos and because the bezels on the sides are very, very slim, it feels great in the hand too... headphone jack output quality is clear and loud, not as loud as the V30, but very close... IR blaster (missed these on phones), it's awesome when you are in the sofa chilling and the remote is gone on a mystical journey again and no where to be found, but hey, just use your phone to control your TV =D... And now the battery, wow, very impressed, never had a phone that lasted me a full day off the charger, I use my phone heavily, so I always had to top up my other phones around 3pm, after unplugging at 6am, with the Mate 10, I'm getting 8hrs SOT, enough to last me 18hrs off the charger, simply amazing battery beast.
If you are looking for a new phone, with top of the range specs and without breaking the bank, I recommend the Mate 10, right now the true flagship killer IMHO.
absolutely correct! im also getting around 8h SOT and i play alot of heavy games. first i though that the phone is draining battery fast but after seeing SOT i realized that it was just my illusion. the 12 core gpu drains the battery faster but actually not that fast. i have set the screen to 1080p mode and power saving toggle is turned on and the phone is still blazing fast even in heavy games. the camera in DxO mark scored 97 (100 in picture quality) and that is truly amazing. knowing that at this point i can respond to those note 8 and iphone x owners who brag about their phone being a camera topper and performance beast. in newer antutu 7 people say that kirin 970 already beaten up the SD845. if thats real then i dont know why would someone not get this phone. the audio quality is just jaw dropping. not to mention the powerful theme engine huehuehue.
also the charging speed is insane. 0 to 100% in just 80 minutes is awesome.

Yep, I swap phones very often, every week or 2 weeks, but I don't know what to get now, because I'll feel like I've just downgraded and there will be nothing new to try, the only one I'm considering right now is the Mi MIX 2 or Essential phone, because of the narrow top bezel, but other than that, I know I'll have a worst phone compared to the MATE 10, so there is really no reason to get another phone, when the Mate 10 is this good. Oh well, guess I found the perfect phone for me, finally xD
This looks like as good as any place to add my thoughts on my ALP-L29 (Mate 10 non pro).. I'm not going to rattle specs, just highlight features I enjoy..
1 month in, 3 firmware updates thus far, unrooted and still content..
Design:
Though the idea of a glass sandwich makes for slippery surfaces, drops, constant fingerprints and extra weight, it is stunningly beautiful. The ergonomics are very good with no sharp edges, balanced perfectly and is one of the few devices with a symmetric design. The volume/power button placement isn't ideal though, I prefer a better separation or texture to identity what I'm pressing, and using these for screenshots is awkward. Thankfully there are several ways to bypass this minor issue. I use my device on a desk and appreciate the front fingerprint scanner location as well.
Hardware:
The inclusion of an ir blaster wasn't a feature I looked for, but find myself using frequently. My daughter constantly leaves the TV remote in odd places and I save stress/time just using my phone instead. I really enjoy the desktop mode, and the added functionality of the usb 3.0.. I travel frequently and am looking forward to leaving the laptop at home. The headphone jack was and is still a main reason I didn't choose the pro model. The rest of the hardware is as described, awesome battery life, great camera and blazingly fast fingerprint scanner..
Software:
Emui is different, not bad, but feels a bit heavy.. I forgive most of this due to its included theming, functions like gesture/voice controls and uniqueness over not just being another "android".. I still threw Nova on it because the stock launcher is too limited (as most stock launchers are). The updates have been regular, no rogue apps eating battery and everything has been super stable. There are flaws though. The non removable battery notifications of heavy apps is annoying, the knuckle gestures (while sometimes useful) rarely work as accurately as I'd like and there is performance optimization problems. I find small lags sometimes while scrolling, slight touch accuracy/unresponsiveness several times (across updates, maybe hardware related), and its aggressive ram/battery management sometimes reloads even single apps..
Being a phone:
At the end of the day this is a phone, and as a phone it works very well. I travel through Paris daily by metro, and signal strength has been good and keeps cellular connection better than my old phone. I don't miss messages or calls, though the mobile data cuts out a bit more than my last device which I find odd.. It'll have reasonable signal but doesn't try to keep poor mobile data connection, maybe to save battery?.. This happens as well with the switch between 2g/3g/4g, often preferring the lower band unless signals are ideal (toggling airplane mode helps coax it to grab the higher band). Call quality has been excellent, loud and no complaints about the microphone output.
Conclusion:
As I've stated, I'm very content, and recommend this device. It's a powerful flagship, great for media consumers, gamers, photo junkies and those who need a bit more productivity out of their device. It has stamina for a full days usage and charges in mere minutes for a few extra hours if needed.. The positives far outweigh any minor annoyances. This is the first device I haven't eagerly wanted to unlock, root and mod..
Not going to rehash what all the previous users have already stated. Even the little quirks can be ironed out with a little research and playing around with the numerous settings. Great phone! Highly recommended. I do believe that after many years of phones going in the opposite direction from what I wanted that I have finally found the one that ticks all the boxes for me! I cannot imagine another phone satisfying me as much...unless Huawei makes another one with all the same ports but with newer SOC's.
