Is there any tested method available to ROOT this phone or install a Custom Recovery? - Moto G5S Plus Questions & Answers

Hi, I got this phone today. I wondered if there was any method available to root the phone and install a custom recovery. I googled and couldn't find any. So if someone comes up with a method please inform via this thread.
Thanks

Still waiting...

@GeneticEnginer says he has a build ready. He is testing it. He might come up with a guide to root and install TWRP soon.

Cheers to GeneticEngineer. I am waiting for root as well. I need to edit build.prop to enable camera2 and delete the locksettings.db file for pinless fingerprint experience.

yes we need development in G5S plus, because it have nice camera and Gestures, we need to tweek camera so we can get better quality image than A1,
i have seen so many reviews all are saying that mi a1 have nice image quality, but may be because they are fan of MI, i am also fan of MI but now moto is providing competition. lets see what will happen, my mind will with MOTO where as my heart will go with MI :fingers-crossed:

The current ROM in Moto G5S+ does not seem to have the ability to shoot images in RAW format. Only JPEG is available right now. Hopefully, Camera2 API can be enabled via build.prop to enable RAW image capture.

It is very hard to explain RAW images. A professional photographer will be able to explain better.
In short, a RAW image is somewhat like the negatives of old. It contains the exact data that the sensor captures. It will look bland if you look at it before processing. It is very large in size and needs further processing before being converted to JPEG or PNG. Although every camera (including professional ones) contain an image processor in it, professional photographers prefer to shoot in RAW and use Adobe Lightroom to do the processing on a computer to get the final JPEG or PNG image. Obviously, an Adobe product running on a computer is way more powerful than an image processor in a camera or a phone. Therefore all professional cameras have RAW shooting ability.
Since Marshmallow, Google introduced Camera2 API that allows you to shoot RAW images for manual processing. However, many manufacturers disable the feature.
Not sure about those other phones you mention having the ability to shot RAW. Maybe ask around in related forums. Be careful though, some cameras simply do not have the sensor to shoot RAW (Sony phones for example) even after rooting and editing the build.prop .Their image processor is hard linked to the sensor and the RAW data simply does not leave the camera unit in order to be captured by Camera2 API.

WOW. That was quick. I suppose posting just for saying thanks is not allowed, but great job :good:.
I do have a question though, not sure where to ask. My unit has an option to unlock bootloader in developer options. I have never visited moto bootloader unlock website. Does this mean they are allowing rooting without voiding the warranty or did I receive a second-hand unit?
Edit: NVM it is still locked. That is a dummy option until you get the unlock code. Wish there was a way to root this phone without bootloader unlocking like the Xperia Z2.

I took it to a service centre and they said that warranty is active on the device as shown in their system, although I did not tell them about the bootloader unlock thing.

My device haven’t arrived yet but I have last years G4+ I also have the same option on it. It does not mean you have a void warranty or that you got a second hand phone. You have to check it along with usb debugging and stuff to actually unlock the bootloader. Extra precautions because unlocking the bootloader erases all your data from the phone and void your warranty(so they say).

There is a TWRP recovery available. And you can root using either of Magisk and SuperSU. LINK

I just found out that G5S+ has camera2 API enabled by default. I installed camera FV-5 on my Moto G5S+ and it allows shooting RAW images. The RAW images are beautiful in details, better than my Sony Xperia Z2's camera.
The stock camera does some artificial edge enhancement stuff which makes the images look sharp but less detailed. The RAW images retain both the sharpness and details, although as always with RAW images, they are not great on colour, which you can always process in Lightroom.
Therefore I recommend anyone looking for a great camera phone to buy Moto G5s+. Be warned though, its low light abilities are not great due to a higher aperture. Moto G5+ is the best in that regard.

I am not really a proper photographer, just happen to have several photographer friends
I need to create a video tutorial. That is the only way to teach a novice without getting into all the terminology confusion and difficulty trying to describe effects like bokeh that are better shown than described. However, I will ask my friends whether such a video is already available on the internet first.

Apps for cam

Hello there,
I'm pretty new to all this and the P880 is my first Android device.
Does anyone here know if there is an app that allows you to take photos like the normal photo app but saves the raw data from the image sensor? I had such an app for my previous device, the Nokia N900 and really like to play around with raw images ...
many thanks in advance

I don't think this is possible. Just did a quick google:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4514862/android-impossible-to-obtain-raw-image-data-from-camera
Maybe you can ask the the CyanogenMod team if it's possible at all and somebody is interested to look into this... However it would need root then.

Sony credentials restore after unlocking the bootloader

This is outdated and not maintained anymore. Please this new tool instead
Most of us have decided to unlock the bootloader as there is no root or xposed without it.
But as you may have noticed this wipes the masterkey in TA unit 66667 and will make all Sony credentials inaccesible. As a consequence a lot of functionality is lost, e.g x-reality, Sony application updates etc.
Here is a solution to simulate the credentials again. There is no way to recover your lost key, but we can simulate them. Just flash the attached zip via TWRP, that's all.
This is solution is for all Z5 models (Z5 compact, Z5 , Z5 Premium, and the dual models of course)
Have fun

I can say that I have tested this on Xperia Z5 Premium, and when I view the sample photos that came with the phone I can now clearly see the image quality scale up just like before I unlocked bootloader!
Thanks ALOT Tobias, you're the man!
EDIT: Below I have included my experiences from the original thread where this was posted, and I will continue to update it if I feel necessary!
Testing right now on Z5P, will report back!
EDIT: First test: I went into album and viewed the sample photos that came with the phone. I can now se a clear change in the image quality, just like before unlocking bootloader! Going to do some camera tests now!
EDIT2: My camera app will not start, stating it is already in use or the flashlight is. Will try to install camera 2.0 then see what happens.
Camera keeps crashing, and will not start :S
EDIT3: Now suddenly there were several updates available on the "Whats new" app! Will post a screenshot soon!
EDIT4: I installed a 3rd party camera app (CyanogenOS Camera) and the pictures are noticeably better than before this fix! I think I can say its back to the quality it was before unlocking bootloader!
In the meantime I discovered that my 32gb sd card is now almost full, with only 2gb left. Are there any large files that twrp creates other than the backup files everytime I flash a rom or something?
Is there anything I can safely delete here?
EDIT5: After some more camera testing and comparing pictures with my lumia 1020 and my galaxy s6 I can say that in my eyes the picture quality is back to its original state.
So just flash this in recovery on an unlocked bootloader and we are done? Or am I missing something?
I haven't unlocked my bootloader as of yet but I'm tempted to now.

I've read reports of Sony's Camera app not working after using this. Can you confirm if the TA partition only had DRM keys and not also some camera algorithms? If they did, can we use get those as well?

I assume you are refering to my experiences with this fix.
Although the sony camera app for some reason stopped working after this, I can still use all my other apps that include the use of the camera without problems, like snapchat or the Cyanogen Camera which when I take pictures with and compare them to the pictures taken before the DRM restore, I can clearly see that the picture quality is now back!

Actually, CyanogenOS Camera has it's own postprocesssing, so you aren't using Sony's. It's just an alternative. I still want to know if it's possible to get the Sony algorithms back and/or use Sony's Camera app.

I've just flashed the patch and my sony camera 2.0 is working. I guess you installed xposed which conflicted with camera 1.0, you'll need to deodex it or upgrade to camera 2.0 via What's New.
EDIT: I just tested Sony camera 2.0 to shoot with real high 3200iso indoor and no color noise there, confirmed this patch restored Sony low-light denoise algorithms.

I just tested CyanogenOS Camera. I think it actually make use of Sony engine, not to mention it works with 23MP/20MP mode and it also access all scenes mode in Sony camera just acting like a stock camera. Tried to shoot at indoor low-light, no color noise been found, I think the DRM patch is working good with CyanogenOS camera.
Great work OP!

Camera 2.0 ported

Here it is camera 2.0 ported for 5.0.2... This took a lot of work, months of work to figure this out. Theoretically this should work on any 20.7 megapixel Xperia device running 5.0.2... Enjoy it... My Rom Is coming people... I've been very busy with school.

I'm using my phone... And are you sure this has been available for 5.0.2? I know it's been available for 5.1.1 Lollipop for some time now...Because I'm pretty sure as of a month ago (that's around the last time I searched this topic) it wasn't working on 5.0.2 because people were getting Force Close errors on all the Camera 2.0 ports.. A couple of the devs even said 5.0.2 was impossible with this... but if you know of a recent 5.0.2 port that I don't know about, let me know.. It's not that I doubt you, I'd just like to see it for myself since I sunk a lot of time into getting this to work for our Lollipop version...Thanks!

The Z3v is different from the rest of the Xperia line, and I've tried the port that was given out on the cross device board and it really does no one any good when you can't even open the camera anymore.

telling a devloper to use the search button... you should know what your talking about before you post.
This is the only way to get camera 2.0 on the z3v. Or use the other ports and watch your camera not work anymore and force close.

Where can I find a list of improvements that will be had specifically to the z3V over the original camera software?
Also, can you please tell us what is different than the other downloadable installation file that's floating around here? They have the same timestamp and are the same size. I'm not doubting, just trying to understand.
Mr. Bradley, please, for the love of God, don't lock this thread down too.

There are no list of improvements specific to our device model, this is just the updated Sony camera app(s) ported from the Z5 to work on our devices. I wasn't aware there was another flashable camera port for the Z3v floating around here... Please link me to it. I assure you, you have nothing to risk by flashing this and that I am the original developer of this port... No one else by my knowledge should be circulating this file around for the Z3V or 5.0.2 in general. I'm making a flashable zip as we speak to revert back to the orginal camera should you not like the Camera 2.0's interface... I'm also working on an updated version of this port that will provide some camera improvements. When I'm done with both zips they will be posted in the OP along with some cleanup and screenshots. Thank you for your questions, it's great to ask questions... that's how we learn.. And its always good to know as much as possible before flashing anything to our phones. Should you have any more questions feel free to ask and I hope you enjoy the MOD.
Nope, not the same. When Mega DLs I end up with two of everything. Previous download zips were moved to my card and is the z5 2.0 at 10.5mb.
Will try this later and look for differences.

Would you mind linking me to this other zip you're referring to? Thank you
EDIT: Nevermind I can tell by the size of the file you must be referring to one of the other Camera 2.0 ports here on XDA. You can try flashing those at your own risk if you'd like, but I'd kindly like to warn you ahead of time, those do not work on Lollipop 5.0.2... The reason my port is larger in file size is because the framework ported from 5.1.1 as well as permission files to run Camera 2.0 are included. It is worth noting however, you can flash any other Camera 2.0 port AFTER flashing mine and they'll work since mine installs the correct framework and permissions that are necessary.
Zach,
Thanks for putting this together. I've installed it on rooted 5.02 and it's running well. Note that a couple boots were required after TWRP install and the user will get an overheat if trying to use the camera immediately but after the phone acclimates it is just fine.
I had downloaded the z5 zip not understanding that the z3V was the only one not on the list. I actually almost installed it until I read that it could brick the phone.
The UI seems a bit fiddly but I guess each has it's learning curve. I took random dim indoor shots, including some macros, before and after in the sensors native 4:3 aspect ratio at 20.7MP usingthe original and your ported 2.0, but using Camera FV-5. I didn't tripod the phone or run any real range, just point & shoot of 28 shots all the same objects from the same spot.
So far I have not noticed a significant difference and when the photos are zoomed in on they show the same muddled look from what appears to be the same overcorrective software (I'm sure Sony didn't change that). I've read that the z5 camera hardware is identical to the z3V.
I'll put her on a tripod this weekend and do some real testing.
The original camera zip will make flipping back and forth easier for comparison testing.
Thanks for making this happen!
Thank you so very much for your time and effort to get this working for our device
So how many of us have actually installed this ROM? Is it worth ditching the setup we have right now? I mean I don't really know how this could provide better performance if Sony hasn't updated any soft for our phones camera. I could understand manual modes might provide greater ability to change fine settings, but point and shoot quality and overall use ability is was I am concerned about.
First off, it's not a ROM, it's technically just a mod. Secondly, Sony supposedly did update the software, and because the camera hardware in our z3V phones are identical to those of the z5 which was released with this updated software, it will do the same thing and be perfectly installable without having to port it. -And it is, on nearly every single z model but ours because the z3V is a Verizon Sony step child.
The UI is MOSTLY what's new and improved, but lower light shots do seem to be rendered better by the software. The ISO limits haven't changed and I doubt that Sony did something to alter their interpolation software, but something does seem different.
Until I can easily switch back and forth without having to flash to an entire restore that's 12Gb (in other words, simply flash back to the original camera as a zip), I'm not going to bother with tripod testing. Once I can do that, I will take shots with a tripod in varying light using the old and new camera zips and examine the shots and exif data. It could simply be that in manual mode the software defaults to better settings. I'm guessing that it's the default values values in lower light situations that have been changed, if anything.
At first I didn't like the user interface just because I wasn't used to it. But now I find I'm actually using it more than I used the old one (I normally use FV-5). It is a one handed, portrait friendly UI.
I highly recommend this mod. Simply make a backup and install it. You can always revert back to the old one via your backup or you could wait for zachariahpope to release the original as an installable zip.
I found I minor bug. The front camera wants to stay on manual. If you switch to superior auto, the camera closes.

Strange. Mine doesn't crash when switching to superior auto with the front camera.
Edit: It does if I try to switch while using the front camera. If I switch to Superior Auto for the rear camera and then switch to front camera it is fine.

Chinese version no option to save photos as RAW?

Just wanted to see if everyone is seeing this.
I'm on the EVADL00 with firmware version B139
In the Camera app's settings, there's simply no option to save as RAW.

hmm nevermind. You first need to be in Pro mode in order for the option to show up in Settings.
a bit confusing.... but it's there!
Does it give the option to save RAW and jpg?

yes it does. that's the only option- save both jpg and raw format. toggled off, then it's jpg only, obviously.
Thanks for confirming.
I guess it wouldn't make sense for RAW only on a smartphone. Are you able to save the jpg with filters applied i.e. neutral/standard/vivid/monochrome? Just wondering how close they made the camera options to a proper Leica.

yup they have what's called "Film Mode" in Settings, and the options are: Standard, Vivid and Smooth
And yes Monochrome is available in the easier accessible right-swipe Modes.

Cool, they went part of the way there then! The Leica M has the option so save RAW and Monochrome jpg. A lot of photographers like that option as when you are "chimping" a photo you just took, you are only really checking for proper exposure and when you import both into the likes of Adobe Lightroom it can give you a good indication as to which images would be a candidate for full monochrome conversion from the RAW file. I'm happy they've given a nod to what the Leica M does, but I doubt many smartphone photographers would save just RAW and monochrome jpg!

Yes I think very few users would bother saving RAW. but of those who do.. they'll likely find the photo quality lacking to begin with. Such a pity..
Got to believe that RAW has to be better than compressed jpg, by definition?

The problem with the cam is it seems to always need input on what to focus on in Auto mode. Lack of OIS also means blur happens quite often in snapshots
I've not tried RAW / Pro mode properly just yet. It's something else entirely when you're adjusting every little thing yourself.. I'm sure that will yield better results
This Chinese version come with original ROM or Modified by vendor? Thanks.

I can't say to what extent it was modified by the vendor.. but yes it definitely had a vendor boot animation before the Huawei animation came on
I doubt the ROM is modified because I receive and applied official Huawei updates just fine..?

I bought the version EVA-AL00 and if the DL00 has portuguese the AL00 very likely that has also.
I checked and it's compatible with our LTE (here we use band 7-2600mhz and band 38-2600mhz).
Thanks.

nice. have fun!
Sorry for bringing an year old thread, but I can`t find a way to save a picture, taken with the wide aperture option in raw format. It seems a some sort of limitation- when choose the option, the "pro" mode disables and on the right slide RAW is nowhere to be found.. Which is silly- the Wide aperture option is one of the most "pro" things, that can exist.

Question Asus Stock Camera App, Please !

Hi XDA,
Can anyone please pull the stock Asus Zenfone8 app(as an .apk) so we can use it on custom ROMs ?
I compared the stock Asus camera app with all availabe apps before installing the LineageOS and the difference is huge, specially comparing it to the OpenCamera.
The stock app is way better.
I wish I can have it on my LineageOS now
Appreciate your help so much!
I have attached the extracted APK here, I hope it works!:

Just 1 question please, how were you able to got it?
Was it taken directly from the Zenfone8 ?

Yes, I got it directly from my phone. I extracted it with an adb command. It was my first time doing that so I don't know if I did it properly

Well, I was hoping it was some kind of img file. But it's a zip with a .bin file. Not a clue as to what I can do with that. Would be great to get the stock camera. The Lineage camera really sucks and I cannot get any of the gcam versions to work either...
If that helps, I was able to get OK results on the stock ROM from the GrapheneOS Camera app. You can get it from their github repository. Note that it is very basic and lacks any night mode or any kind of special features. Also I just noticed that it does not offer the option of switching lenses. Maybe it is possible but I didn't search on that subject. Here are some comparison images

Hi, I tested it as well and had no sucess. As a developer I also tried to unpack the apk and take a look, imeediatly noticed that it has some google dependencies which in my case a LineageOS with no google will not work, as well I saw some properties and configurations files so maybe these has some data related to the phone of the good guy who ported it out.
The stock camera app is way better than the most famous free camera apps out there, specially in night photography, the OpenCamera for example leaves you night photos so so noisy and it sets the screen brightness on max with no way to change that (not that I know).
Lets please keep this thread running to find out the best camera for this phone with AOSP and no google dependneces.
Tested the Witchaya Port of GCam yesterday. No luck with Version 8 (just crashes), but Version 7 first seemed to run. Yet it freezes the captured image constantly after 3 seconds. Tapping onto a different camera mode wakes the image again for 3 seconds - just to freeze again afterwards. Tried all of the supplied xml config files - no success. I'm running on latest LineageOS nightly without the GApps...
I believe if a good developer can take a look at the stock Asus app and figure out why it doesn't work.
Maybe it's just a deal of adjusting some configuration file.
On another thread, what's the best free Camera app you're using ?
I'm using the OpenCamera since it has lots of options, but its photo quality is not the best and night shoots are so noisy.
Asus camera is dependant of asus framework . Most likely nogo to get it to run on non as roms.
Its not as simple as config files, it much deeper integrated in asus framework

Any news regarding cam so far? Been fiddling around with opencamera and the lineageOS cam, but the results are rather disappointing.
Would appreciate any further development in this case.
Thanks, happy new year!

Same exact situation here
Just gave the GrapheneOS camera app a try, it looks more promising, hope they will keep on upgrading it.
I raised an issue for supporting the ultra-wide lens as well, hope they will work on it.
It's good to keep an eye on this app, thanks to @Adaoh for mentioning it.

Nice hint, thank you! Just installed it, seems to work fine except for the ultra-wide lens, as you mentioned already.
I have tried OmniRom, and it has an Asus camera port that works I will be asking the maintainer if he is fine with me sharing the APK.

Thank you @Adaoh ! Unfortunately it does not work for me. After granting access the app displays "Camera not ready. Try again later" (translated from german) and exits. Obviously depending on some other components not available in LineageOS...

Yeah they warned me about that on the OmniRom telegram group, a friend tested on his Pixel 4a and it worked, so I assumed it would have worked on ZF8
