4k on youtube? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I can't seem to watch 4k quality on YouTube. Even with finding 4k videos it doesn't show the option. Any ideas?

What's the point it's a 2k screen

I think he meant HDR rather than 4K. For non-HDR 4K any screen smaller than 82 inches diagonally is a waste of time. For HDR the smaller screens (and resolutions) still work quite well.

There's tons of video. The galaxy note 8 chimes with a default screen resolution of 1080p so you need to switch it to 2k before YouTube recognizes your screen resolution and allows you to choose I higher resolution. Go to SETTINGS>DISPLAY>SCREEN RESOLUTION and switch it to WQHD. The UI will refresh, make sure to end YouTube and re-launch it and now you can search 4k videos and the iron for 1440p should show.

^^^This is a great video to watch. YouTube just started supporting HDR playback on the S8 and Note 8 yesterday so you'll see the option for 1440p 60fps HDR on this video

You have to have the latest update to YouTube and have the phone in landscape. I had the same problem

I was having the same issue I figure it out though.. you have to raise the phones resolution to WQHD+ because YouTube caps the available resolution to whatever the phones capable of. Which makes sense it would be a waste of bandwith to have a 1440p video streaming on a 1080p phone.. but after you raise he resolution force stop YouTube then go back in and you can watch 1440p HDR 60 fps videso in all their glory.

Uh that's not good

Who's your carrier? T-Mobile, for example, advertises that they limit video streaming to 480p on their "unlimited" plan. If your carrier does that, have you tried it over a fast WiFi connection instead of mobile data?

Sprint, and On WiFi when trying to play.
Went to YouTube, 4k videos working. Must be something about the links?

FYI 1440 is not 4k

Youtube has disabled the 1440p option for HDR now

Um, why? A difference that's discernable on an 82" display from 150" away is equally discernable on an 8.2" display from 15" away.

Download Youtube ++ and iYTBP From TutuApp apk. After that go to youtube ++ sign in (google account) then go to account setting - setting iYTBP settings - Video Quality - preferred video quality WI-Fi then click 2160p . BTW it disables ad and you can do background music... enjoy. .....:fingers-crossed::good:

YA also if you want to watch 4K HDR then it will not work but it can do 1080p HDR... If you want to watch just 4k video then it can also handle 4K 60 FPS :angel:

• Hi guys, I have some news, WE CAN record in 640x480 on the front camera WITHOUT LAGS ! the iso is perfect, the image has a lot of fps...
To record yourself you need to go to camera (taking pictures) and it's called self-recording, my camera was in french (yeah french sucks you will say)... but I didn't knew that at all... and it's correct, hope that in official JB we'll record in 720p with it :fingers-crossed:
• Now I will explain you the problem of the rear camera in record mode :
First of all open your official samsung camera app and go to record mode switch resolution to 176x144 see what shows you your device, and don't move your hands, your body, your eyes and even your device, now switch to 320x240 see what happens, after that switch to 640x480, 720x480, 1280x720, 1920x1080 why it has a so much overzoomed view
• Now comment what you have felt of this experience
• I sent a feedback to samsung to they change these stupid settings for record mode hope these developpers will get what I have said and test it and release correct android JB
I've actually made video comparaison between 176x144 (...) to 1920x1080 on youtube but I need 10 posts to include links O___o

This is a known issue! As long as you shoot at resolutions less than or equal to 720p the full frame of the video is captured. But in case of 1080p it isn't.
yeards porabha
That's what I tried to say
I would like, if developpers can or could, to they edit these bad settings of samsung and put full view for the 1080p mode
Guys, we're on a forum of developpers, if someone is a developper and read this, could you take the zoom file in the camera apk from the 176x144 version and put this field of view in the 1080p mode, like this the camera won't OVERZOOM the image in 1080p mode

Can the Note 4 capture slow motion video like the iphone 6/iphone 6 plus ?

By default the Note 4 does not have the option of taking slow motion video like the iphone 6. However, is this a software issure? Would there be a third party software that would allow slow motion video capture?
Didn't instagram just add this feature?

It does 240fps too in 1/8x mode. http://www.techspot.com/review/759-galaxy-note-3/page5.html
The Galaxy Note 4 does have slow motion as well as fast motion (time lapse) the difference is that the Galaxy Note 3 and 4 have slow motion at 1/2 speed, 1/4 and 1/8.

you sure? The note 3 does 720p at 240fps, it's just plays back at 15fps (not 30fps). Perhaps someone with a Note 4 can confirm.

The "720p" at 1/8 is at 15fps, but is also not true 720p, it's upscaled from a lower resolution.
So does this mean that no matter what....the iphone 6 still take better slow motion video than the Note 4 ?
Galaxy Note 4 Ultra Slow Motion, 4K, 16 Megapixel Camera Test
Note 4 can record 'ultra slow motion' - but then again it can't.
The '240' FPS mode is 120 FPS with a 15 FPS playback, in 720p.

Yes.
The iPhone 6 can do 1/8 speed (240fps) at 720p.
The Note 4 does 1/4 speed (120fps) at something less than 720p.
Perhaps custom camera app will do better. I am sure soon will be hacked and modded
You can always record video at 1080p regularly, and use 3rd party software to "slow it down". This makes the quality of the slo motion video recording on the Note 4 irrelevant. Yes, there is an extra step involved to get the slo mo video, but who doesn't own a computer nowadays? Shouldn't take that long to do in a 3rd party software.
30 FPS do look better than 15.
I even use 60 in FullHD, which looks better than 30 with 4K.
Slow mode looks fantastic on the iphone 6!
I don't get why our Note has issues.
Looks terrible at the crummy upscaled 720p, just atrocious!
Hopefully the Note 4 can be improved.
Looking forward to continuing to record in 4K going from the 3 to the note 4.
Once I scoop up a 4K TV plus an MHL 3.0 HDMI adapter (when they finally becomes available), it's going to be cool reviewing all my vids.
Has anyone come across a review of the Note 4's 4K 30Hz display output capability via MHL 3.0?

Where To Find 2K Videos?

So I got this fancy new phone with 2K resolution so where can I get a video to blow my friends away? YouTube seems to only stream up to 1080p even though several of the videos say 2K.
On the g3 there was an apk floating around that supported 2k video in the YouTube app maybe google or search the forums for that particular YouTube apk. If I'm not mistaken the web version of YouTube allows this as well.

To watch it on 4k TV. Also frame grabs from video are much better quality and you can zoom in, without loss of quality when using phone for watching and actually I use it very often on my Note 3, since with fixed lens framing is always far from perfect and there is always option of not using 4k video at all.

Use viral pro and get rid of YouTube, viral pro is way better and streams way faster. Try the free version.
This is a youtube issue. Other qHD phones lost their 1080/1440p options as well. There are a lot of 1 star reviews on the play store complaining about this. I hope they give us 1440p back soon!

I tried the free version of viral, I really like it so far. Being able to play videos over another app is amazing. The problem is I can still only watch videos at 720p.
I remember reading somewhere right after the phone came out that it may be an issue with the turbo, specifically after the ota that was released day one. People were saying that they were able to watch videos at 1440p before they installed that update. Of course now I can't find the thread where I read that to confirm.
Really hoping that we get Lollipop relatively quickly. Thinking that will fix some of the little software bugs the phone has.
found an older one that I least gives me 1080p
5.13.3-51303300
I have the Sony Xperia Z3v which has a 1080p screen and YouTube only works at 720p for it as well. So I believe it is an app issue and not related to the phone.

This is not the case, I have viral and u can watch whatever quality u want as long as the YouTuber is doing it in that quality. It has nothing to do with the Turbo I guarantee you. Not every YouTuber does it in the same quality, sometimes I'm watching 2K and other times I can only watch 360P. Again it's all in what the YouTuber is using to record it. For example go to MKBHD or Phonedogs channel, they usually have videos in 2K.

I understand how youtube works, and yes I know that not all videos are capable of higher resolutions.
I have tried using viral with multiple videos, videos that are definitely high enough resolution, like the 4K gopro videos on youtube. I even tried some of the videos from phonedogs as you mentioned. None will play at higher than 720p on my phone when using viral or the youtube app. My friend who has an LG G3 is able to play at 1440p without issues. Definitely seems like an issue with the phone to me.
Yeah still nothing. Tried installing older youtube version and viral. Nothing. WTF good is a 4k screen if there is nothing you can watch in 4k.
Note 4 has the same problem. Don't know what's up. My S4 and Moto X 2014 and One Max all work properly.

mine works I have it to 1080 your missing a step somewhere
Is it just YouTube that caps at 720p? Can you watch 4k videos in general? Like a downloaded file to the phone or a recorded video?

Do you have the phone set for WQHD+?
if not, YouTube will not show the higher res options.

Yes I do. Even put "Entertainment mode" and nothing. It's the application itself. Every YouTube video I used to watch on 2k hdr . Now only capped at 1080.

I think it was because majority experiencing dropped frames when watching it. So probably got listed as being incompatible with 1440p+ HDR streams.
Work around would be to use Chrome:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
i at least get 1440p
i at least get 1440p. i don't spend time on the app and didn't know the restriction was removed until i read this...
Ever thought about trying OP YouTube? I've been enjoying it. Only thing I miss from the stock YouTube app is the option to expand the video to fit our display ratio but that's a small thing to miss.

For regular (non HDR) you still have that option. Try finding a HDR video and you are capped at 1080p. 2k/4k options are not available anymore in the app for HDR content.
Ok... I wasted hours on trying to fix this.
By coincidence it started when I started playing with the app resolution in Gamtuner.
I ended up wiping the whole phone - twice.
Second time without restoring any backup.
Downloaded latest APK from Aptoide in the end
Then consulted XDA
Always look up XDA first...
Btw. Search I the app to look only in the Note 8 thread... non existent or can't I just find it?
Looks like this is due to the 1440p 60fps issue with the Note 8. - 1080p 60fps works without dropped frames with Note 8, but Note 8 has been having problems with 1440p 60fps dropping frames. This is my believe why Google (YouTube) stopped supporting 1440p 60fps with the Note 8.
Google (YouTube) is still supporting 1440p at lower frames per second (30fps), when available, with the Galaxy Note 8.
Hopefully there will be a solution in the near future that Google (YouTube) can support 1440p 60fps with the Note 8.
Slightly off topic, is it normal for YouTube on mobile device to have some many adverts? I ask because I normally watch YouTube from chrome browser on a PC. Was shocked how the Note 8 YouTube app appears to be bloated with more adverts, some even appear every few minutes while watching a video.

I don't know, since I have YouTube Red with my Play Music subscription.
