Viper mod audio sounds HORRIBLE after rooting with SamPWND! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

I'm pretty frustrated trying to figure this out. I have rooted my US Verizon - variant of the Galaxy S8 (G950U) with SamPWND.
Step 1) After root, I tried installing Viper mod. In the past with other phones, I always just installed the ARISE sound AROMA 2.94 installer as it does a lot of the work for you like installing the audio effects conf file in the right folder (/system/vendor/etc). So I ran the installer, and on next reboot, noticed Spotify Eq was using Samsung's built in SoundAlive equalizer. I forgot to freeze it first but did it anyhow in Titanium. Now spotify is using Viper. Sound quality sounds like crap.
Step 2) Factory reset and start over, this time using the method mentioned in the SamPWND thread which can be found here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/samsung-galaxy-s8-root-snapdragon-t3659305
- That thread points to this Viper install guide for the S8: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...laxy-s8-s8-t3596933/post72049061#post72049061
As the guide mentions, I followed the steps by first freezing SoundAlive, copying the zip's audio conf file to /system/vendor/etc, then installing viper apk. Since our bootloader is locked, as I expected, the step to install Magisk fails, so then I simply restarted and opened viper. Sound quality is still crap.
So in either case, I know that Spotify is now using Viper mod for sound eq. I even went into Samsung's audio settings in Settings and it gave me a popup to use viper. I can listen to bluetooth and while the song is playing, change the viper eq and here a difference.
I noticed by default, Viper comes with Dolby, which is ON. I always turn this to off and notice that the sound is better. Dolby seems to overload the sound for me (sounds overpowered and almost at times like it's cutting out). Still, I'm noticing that the bass is solid when mids/highs don't have much activity but gets distorted when guitar really kicks in. Mids sound muddied and tunnel - like . Highs are tinny.
Normally, Viper mod with stock eq settings with all my other phones *always* sounds better than stock. Even with the eq at default and turning off any gains or gain controls / volume normalization, sound quality is still poor.
On bluetooth (I'm using my Sennheiser momentum wireless which are upper tier), when turning off Dolby, Spotify's normalize volume setting, the quality is near where it should be. But, in my Audi with Android Auto over USB, sound continues to be really horrible...I think the bass in the car and larger speakers are pointing out the distortion more. I have to also manually set my volume before running it in the car or else the head unit sound level is too low and I have to blast the volume knob which makes it sound worse.
Any ideas? What am I missing and are you experiencing the same?

So I have a SM-G955U, and I just installed Viper4Arise. I used the latest ZIP from the official V4Arise thread and flashed it using FlashFire. Make sure to check mount /system read/write and leave reboot enabled.
Also, I used the installer to remove SoundAlive.

Thanks man.
I noticed dolby was on by default. Turned that off and also turned off normalize volume in spotify. Sound is a lot better and no longer over loaded, though I think it might need more tuning. Now I'm wondering if install method matters at all

Good to hear! Yea, I turned off volume normalization as well. I don't normally install Dolby, so I haven't had to do that one.

How are you testing sound quality? I'm fine with the sound over Bluetooth headphones (sennheiser momentum, pretty good ones). But in my Audi, over android auto using usb, the vocals are still a bit harsh. Sub is cleaner now after a ton of adjustments. Vocals still are harsh on the "s" sound. With my previous pixel phone in this car, sound was way better and didn't need so much work

You can open the status menu in the Viper4Arise app to see if it is processing, other than that, I am listening to it. I know what my Pixel sounded like with V4Ar, and it sounds the same to me. All that being said, I have to use BT to connect to the Sync in my Mustang since I only have Sync 2, which doesn't support Android Auto.
How does Android Auto work? Is the music playing from your phone, or is the car stereo controlling? I know you can connect an Android phone as a USB drive.

Yeah, processing wasn't the issue, and that's why I don't know if the install method matters. I definitely know it's doing something because I move the knobs with bluetooth stream and hear the sound act differently.
With Android Auto, I hook up my phone to the USB port built into the car. Then the phone says Android auto in black and white, and the car display shows the interface for music players, maps, etc.
When auto is up, I can't change the sound settings dynamically since the screen is black. I think if I open viper before the car and have the notification always show, I can load it...but then it's loading a separate instance of the app, not the main one.
I had to really change the bass settings on my phone *and* the car (normally don't have to) to make the bass not distort. The audi's stock sound is junk. I got a nice JL Audio amp installed and a 600W JL Audio woofer.
With the pixel, in the car, I had the bass dial in the audi set to one two notches above mid way and the treble down 4 notches. Now, with the rooted s8, I'm having to dial its bass setting down 2 notches from mid (instead of up) and instead turn up the bass knob on the JL Audio woofer just a hair. Anything else and it distorts.
Out of the box, the Pixel just sounded great to me. I don't know why the S8 is taking all this work. Even with my note 4, I didn't have this issue of having to tweak the hell out of it.

Sound/Visualization Mods

So far I've tried a ported Sony Walkman apk with various old school sound mods (xLoud & Clearaudio+, Beats), then Apollo with HTK audio engine, then ViPER4Android. I can't tell if any of them worked, which usually I can tell. I think it's because the sound from the PURE's speakers is already pretty loud, and much better sounding then my original Moto X's? I used the selinux app for ViPER4Android, and HTK audio engine apparently doesn't require the selinux mode change. I'm gonna play around later with my Bluetooth headphones to see if I can notice it better. I think the speakers/drivers are pretty damn good, can't wait to see how much better they can get, being an audio enthusiast. Thoughts, input, ideas?:silly:
Edit: I plan on adding the "known" working music mods/apk's/etc.....
mixer_paths.xml VOLUME BOOST
XTREMEMusic
Xperia Z3 WALKMAN and MODS
ViPER4Android
HTK audio engine

Tried using viper on stock and it sounded god awful. It didnt improve the sound one bit and instead made it sound super tinny to where some songs would hurt my ears. It did work on AICP though, but its still to buggy for me to use as a daily.

Thanks for the input! I still can't tell a difference. I did however flash THIS and it seemed to work. I had the "color mode" set to normal instead of vibrant since I didn't think vibrant made it any better. But I flashed the Sony zip and it seems much better.....

Interesting, would you say the difference is very noticeable? I remember using something like this on the optimus4x and it made it look nicer but I'm not sure if it was a placebo or not haha
Been using XtremeMusic Mod with Project Desire and V4A and loving the audio quality. Takes some tuning but sounds fantastic on speaker, headphones, and in my cars Bluetooth. Increases the speaker volume greatly without distortion too.

Ok..... I was able to increase the volume by editing the mixer_paths.xml similar to the way it's listed on the net everywhere. Only tested the phone speakers and bluetooth, not headphones. Was kinda scared so I only increased everything by "2". That was noticeable and good enough for now.
1. Using your favorite file explore go to = system/etc/mixer_paths.xml
2. Increase the highlighted area parameters in the pic below. I increased everything by only ''2''.

I tried to install XtremeMusic Mod, Project Desire and V4A, but V4A is not working, NEON is showing as NO. I followed all their instructions and XtremeMusic app is showing that it is on. Have you guys had this problem or did you have to do something different to the instructions to get it working?

Do you mean that V4A works for you fine even when NEON is no? I haven't tested it extensively because I gave up once seeing the "No" hehe. I'll give it a try now and see whether V4A is really working. I do think however, that XtremeMusic Mod is working, my bluetooth buds sounds much better than before I flashed them. So even if V4A is not working, I can just wait for them to find a fix.

I just noticed that when I play a song, v4a shows "processing=no" as well. My conclusion is that when we flashed "XtremeMusic Mod with Project Desire and V4A", the "XtremeMusic Mod with Project Desire" part did stick, but not the fixed V4A version. So the sound enhancement we can hear is from the first 2 mods only. I tried increasing/decreasing bass in V4A and there was no audible difference.
is anyone able to get walkman working on stock? It seems to bootloop in the presence of lucky patcher.
UPDATE: I'm able to get the standalone 9.0.2A to work, but not the 3.5 Z3 package

I was having the same issue but managed to get it to start working.
Steps I took:
* Uninstall V4A Drivers
* Reboot to recovery
* Re-install XtremeMusic
* WIPE CACHE/DALVIK
* Re-install V4A and drivers (mine got uninstalled in the process of flashing XM)
* Reboot
* Set SELinux to Permissive
* Play some music and open V4A to verify V4A is working (I have mine set to Compatible and Forced)
* Open XM and turn on
Hopefully this works for anyone else having issues as well. Relatively simple fix but it worked for me.
Been using this Viper, Atmos, Beats installer for the last few weeks and it's fantastic. Developer is actively developing with a new version nearly every day (at this point mostly small tweaks to increase compatibility across devices). I'm on the latest version (3.7) with no problems. Of all the music players out there, I prefer Poweramp. I have the latest 704 alpha version. However, the volume is very low (DVC disabled) as compared to other music players (USB Android Audio, MX Player etc.). Anybody know why? With DVC enabled the volume is even lower.

does viper improve anything for Bluetooth earbuds? have you tested? just curious
Yes, it does. Viper has individual settings and profiles for speaker, headeset and bluetooth. And yes, i've tried them all and the difference is night and day over out of the box.
Now come up with a solution that does NOT require root. I lose too much by rooting.

Have you verified that the volume control is maxed out on the Note 8? With my Note 8 and Poweramp, the phone has a tendency to "forget" the bluetooth volume setting and drop back down to a much lower output. I'll raise the volume back up to max (the car headunit handles volume control duties) and then it works again - until the next time that the glitch occurs. I haven't tested this without bluetooth - so not sure whether this would occur via the headphone jack.
Poweramp's feature to auto-resume playback upon bluetooth reconnect also doesn't work most of the time (works maybe 5% of the time). I'm a new Poweramp user - so don't know whether this is specific to the Note 8.

Something else has to be wrong. Check in settings> sound quality and effects and set everything to default except UHQ upscaler. If you're not rooted/ using viper, than DVC should make it sound better and louder. I use a flat eq from my headunit with crossovers at-6db/80hz and dynamic bass on high +eq with DVC in poweramp with high res audio, sox resampler, shibata dither gives great results. Also use aux or usb over Bluetooth for car audio. My headunit volume is max and poweramp/phone is maybe 60% and can't turn it any higher than that without damaging something.

Is root needed?
Yes.
Hi folks....got my Note 8 all rooted and working on the customizing and such. Of course one of the key reasons for root is for ViperFX which I've used for years and love!
I had no problems installing Viper by following the instructions in some other thread in spite of Flash Fire no longer working...all the buttons work and such...at least so it seems.
It's certainly louder and maybe clearer...but I can't definitely tell if it's on or off!!...Does one turn it on or off via that Master Power switch within it? Is it permanently on?
Thanks for the help
I just installed Viper4Android along with Dolby. Sound is definitely far louder and better.
However, with my high end earphones, I am unable to get decent sound.
Can you gurus please share your Viper4Android ''heatset'' settings? Thanks1!
I would rather look for IRS or convolvers, there are plenty of them, you surely will find one of your liking

I had issues at first getting Viper4Android working. Are you rooted with SuperSU or Magisk? If possible, root using Magisk as it is far easier to get Viper4Android to work.
Using Magisk, download and install the Viper4Android module, activate and reboot. Job done.
I do have Magisk and TWRP installed but it just wouldn't work.
You guys can try my profile if you want, just put the items in the correct folders and load it up
It has the perfect balance of what I like
P.S the convolved is optional, for me it just makes it sound a little bit more clearer by using the original sound driver

speaker got noticeably a lower sound

My phone had decreased the sound of the speakers and it is really so noticible and it just happened today. Is there any solution?

Same here. And it is weird as the speaker still has good quality which means that it is not affected.
mine as well i just noticed it after latest update
Mine is not a new thing I've noticed.
It's not permanently low. It's like I'll watch a video and the usb c port speaker is decently loud with a full sound and then about 5 mins in it fades to quiet and tinny. The front firing speaker seems unaffected.
Playing the video from the beginning doesn't change anything so it doesn't seem app specific. This has happened since day 1 but I don't listed to much out loud these days

This change in volume is caused by Dolby Atmos. Whenever this happens when you're watching a video, you should try going to the dolby atmos settings, switching to a different mode (and then back if you want), and play the video again. The software automatically EQ's based on what you're listening to in a really dumb way, and the method I just described will let it forget and reset for a little while. I'm currently looking at a method to remove Dolby Atmos entirely in favor for an actually decent EQ.
Edit after 45 minutes:
I've removed Dolby! I crossed my fingers and removed it via adb.
The command I used in ADB was:
Code:
pm uninstall -k --user 0 'com.huawei.imedia.dolby'
I had a little switch in my notification drawer which immediately was gone. In the settings there is no sight of the software either, and my phone speaker finally sounds fine! I hope this will work for you all too.

Edit after 45 minutes:
I've removed Dolby! I crossed my fingers and removed it via adb.
The command I used in ADB was:
I had a little switch in my notification drawer which immediately was gone. In the settings there is no sight of the software either, and my phone speaker finally sounds fine! I hope this will work for you all too.

It really worked? lol, gonna try later too, btw, do you know how to install it back? Just to make sure nothing goes wrong in our future EMUI11 and HarmonyOS update.

Yep, it works. The only thing that alters the audio now is if you plug your phone in, but that's not too bothering for me personally. You could try disabling it too, once you're shelled into your phone just type "pm help" and there should be a long list of commands you can apply.
Thanks for the tip! I bought a second hand cellphone, and I thought it was defective. I used the debloat software for huawei phones, and now it sounds how it should be. I just had to install an eq from playstore to use when using earbuds, because I felt it was sounding different. Now everything´s fine!!!
Seems it has re-activated itself on my phone, switch is still gone. I'll do a reset this afternoon to check the sound difference, but this fix seemed to be temporary for some reason...

Yeah, read about it on a debloat post on P30 Pro forum, system apps aren't full removed through adb, it just disables for the current user (wich is user0/ default main user), without it, the uninstall command won't work, to remove completely it needs root acess, wich unfortunately we can't get, but I'm not sure if they are allowed to reinstall itself, unless a factory reset is made.
Edit: Guess what, uninstalling Dolby Atmos seems to dont fix the issue at all, but Dolby is still gone, maybe it has something to do with the system keeping some of its data in the storage, or this issue has something to do with some other system service. I'm installing dolby again and try to look for something else, seems to have nothing to do with dolby, since when using dolby with earphones it don't do that.

This change in volume is caused by Dolby Atmos. Whenever this happens when you're watching a video, you should try going to the dolby atmos settings, switching to a different mode

Yes this seems to have worked as a quick fix, thank you!
Will attempt to disable it completely later

Question Any way to disable Audio Wizard or to boost volume?

Pretty much what the title says. I'm looking to disable the audio wizard and/or get a louder output from the headphone jack. My OnePlus 6 headphone jack is louder than this. On the other hand the Poco x3 pro I bought before buying the Zenfone 8 has a way worse headphone jack. I don't think the OnePlus 6 has a dedicated DAC/Amp so I don't see why this phone has lower output volume other than a software limitation. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Try Poweramp Equalizer (paid app) and enable Direct Volume Control.

I tried that but it doesn't bypass audio wizard. Audio Wizard is still processing the audio. Is there any other method like adb or whatever (except rooting because I want Google pay)

In that case, your only option would be a custom ROM I think.
Does Google Pay not work even with MagiskHide?
Magisk hide is not reliable and constantly gets patched. I don't want to worry about Google pay.

You can try uninstalling it via adb
https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access
I will try disabling it using adb to see if to works. If it doesn't then I'll enable it again and just wait for a software update
Did it work? I would like to use Poweramp's equalizer too so....
Disabling it did work. It is no longer in the settings menu. However the output volume is about the same
How about the Poweramp equalizer? Does it work? On every output?
I'm not sure as I don't have it installed. Here's the thing though disabling through adb is easily reversible so try it yourself
Yeah I'll do it tonight. Was just asking for comparison. I'll try tonight and try to make some tests.
Let me know how it works. I'm not sure if Poweramp uses digital processing when adjusting the preamp setting or whether it directly controls the volume. I had it installed previously but I could not tell.

Yes, tried with speaker, headphone jack and bluetooth

Like I said earlier, you have to enable Direct Volume Control in settings and it really makes a difference.
The problem isn't the headphone jack. I don't know why, but Spotify with Poweramp Equalizer enabled is still much quieter than Poweramp player. Not just via the jack, but bluetooth too. I'm using the same EQ preset on Poweramp and Poweramp Equalizer btw. I haven't disabled the AudioWizard, but I don't think it matters because when I change anything there the sound changes both in Poweramp and in Spotify.
Have you disabled normalize volume on Spotify?
For me I had the same issue but only for the first day. Now it's the same on both Poweramp and Spotify all I did was turn off the normalize sound option

I had it enabled. Now both can get much louder than my ears can handle.
Fantastic. For me it's still a bit too low for my hd600 and my akg k702. My OnePlus could drive them fine but these I gotta go full volume to get something reasonable. My main question is whether or not the preamp option is digital processing or whether it acts directly on the dac. Because with the preamp setting on Poweramp equalizer I can get it pretty loud.
with Usb audio player you can bypass it
