Ghost Touch - Moto E4 Plus Questions & Answers

So I just to America from India, and the moment I landed in the states, my Moto E started acting weird. The touch works automatically, it keeps pressing randomly on the lower part of the screen. I thought my screen protector was messing up so I removed it. Then I thought there's some software issue so I reset the phone (twice) still nothing.
I dont know what happened to my phone I think the screen got pressing too much in my pocket while I was in the flight for 30 hours. and they won't give me the warranty as it's from India.
Can anyone help?

Have you tried formatting it?

cannot afford that

I'm also experiencing the same issue...My Motoe4 plus touch started acting weird especially in the lower part of the screen

A Google search shows that most often the "Ghost touch" is a hardware issue. It seems to happen on a fair number of Moto devices.
If you can't return your phone (best option) then try cleaning the screen and clean your hands before using the phone. It can be the result of oil on the screen.
You can feel free to try clearing caches and data, but don't count on that solving the problem. There are a lot of discussions about this, but the general consensus is hardware, not software.

Try an "External reset"

Hi, I have probably the same problem here .. Moto E4 Plus (XT1771). I was trying to do:
- different fw, without any result
- lower backlight, maybe better, but still there
- complete FR from Settings
- complete FR from 'bootloader menu' - off > power+vol- > power+vol+, here in menu clear cache + clear all data
- external reset, tutorial in upper post
And the result is the same. Sometimes it's better, sometimes it's impossible to write anything on keyboard, for example. The only solution is switch off display and turn it on again and wait, if it's better (Developer menu > show touches). If not, switch off and try again ..
I suppose that it's HW problem, do you thing that if I'll replace complete LCD+digitizer+frame, that it will solve this problem?

Link to video, that I made to show the problem: https://youtu.be/JoSfMRvFVLI
Thanks for any hint! :]

Anyone got resolution, what you guys did finally. Please respond as I'm getting same problem now

Screen Dimension error (solved, thanks)

let me cut straight to the point. I use a Nexus One stock 2.2 ROM.
For some reason, my screen dimension changed.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11834745/screendimensionerror.jpg
This link shows the app GPS Status and it used to be full screen but for some reasons (maybe I did something but i dont know what happened exactly) now it occupies only half of the screen. I tried to uninstal and reinstall and it still remains the same. I tried to rotate screen and move back and still the same.
Actually a couple of games it shows the same problem such as the objects in the screen got smaller as if it is not 800 x 480 anymore.
It seems like the dimension of the screen changed or something.
Can anyone please help me if you know how can I fix it? Please.
Or else I will have to spend hours to do a hard reset and rework everything.

thanks.
problem has been solved.
GPS status developer went right through the problem and diagnosed that I played around with "Spare parts" 's compatibility mode.
Now everything is fine.
thanks a lot again.
Damn, sorry, I forgot about this option. I knew it affects widgets, but I didn't know it affected programs as well.
Glad you had it solved.

Bought a used Droid 4 and recently updated to JB. Something wrong with touchscreen?

Hi, I bought a Motorola Droid 4 (Verizon Wireless) on eBay and I just got it yesterday. I also upgraded the firmware to 98.72.18.XT894.Verizon.en.US. I'm not sure if the touch screen is bad because of the software update or because I bought a defective used Droid 4 from a dishonest seller. I didn't test the screen before updating to Jelly Bean.
My problem only occurs in the home screen and app drawer. There seems to be two types of swiping interfaces. One is like scrolling (the phone book, for example) and the other is the "bouncy" pages found in most launcher home screens and app drawers. When I scroll my phone book or navigate a webpage in Chrome, screen scrolls perfectly. However, when I slide left and right in the home screen (or drawer) it slides partially and snaps back to the original page. Most of the time I swipe to right but I move to the left screen instead of the right. This problem never happens with my Droid 3.
A temporary (but not permanent) solution is that I have to swipe right and pause for a millisecond while still pressing on the screen, and then I have to slide right one more time and release my finger.
I notice that the reason why the Droid 4 go left when I swipe right is because the Droid 4 is so sensitive that when I swipe an inch right but 1/8 of an inch left (at the very end) it registers the last movement so that the screen moves left. It is as if the phone ignores the majority of the gesture and only registers the last portion of the gesture. Don't be confused, the majority of the gesture is recognize by the phone because I see screen moving along with my finger but the phone only registers the last part as the "confirmation" to change screen. If I swipe really slowly following the steps from the temporary solution above, it works. But I never had to do this with the Droid 3 or G2 or Samsung Galaxy S 4G.
So does anyone notice this problem? Does anyone notice that their Droid 3 swipes accurately 100% of the time while their Jelly Bean Droid 4 often swipes inaccurately? Should I return my Droid 4? What is going on? Is there a permanent fix? Can someone please verify whether or not this is an isolated issue? In other words, the problem is a bad touch screen (which doesn't make sense to me because everything else works perfectly) or the firmware (which means everyone experiences the same issue).
Also can someone verify to me that their pinch to zoom does not work when they use the Dolphin Mini browser?
Go into your developer options and check pointer location just to get a better understanding of what's going on when trying to swipe... is the phone on charge when this occurs? The touch is vary erratic when on a non OEM charger... there may be some static interference going on... if you haven't I would FDR and clear cache partition from the recovery menu... test the home screen/drawer... test your touches with developer options... try safe mode... test the touches... only time I have noticed this is while on a charger not putting out the OEM 5.1v 850mA...

(1) Developer options was the first thing I tried when I notice the problem. The lines and dots were as accurate as my finger placement and gesture.
(2) The phone was on charge and wasn't on charge. The problem occurred under both conditions.
(3) I was using an OEM charger purchased from Verizon Wireless.
(4) Static interference??? I get shocked a lot when I touch things, but the problem doesn't occur on my D3 when I touch it. IDK what static interference is or how to fix it.
(5) FDR? You mean factory data reset? clear cache? I don't want to resort to this. Won't I have to reinstall everything and re-do all of my settings? I did a hard reset before the update but not after it. And now I don't want to reset again without knowing the cause of the problem.
(6) Safe mode and test the touches? How do I do safe mode? Test the touches is a bit vague.

This phone has a captivate touchscreen... As the human body is also an electrical conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the screen's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. This is how it responds to our touch I would think the d4 screen would be more sensitive then the d3 that's why I say static interference... safe mode by hold power when you get screen pop long press power off when you get screen pop press OK... once in safe mode see if it still does it... if it does then its not third party app interference... if it doesn't then FDR and add apps one by one to see which app is the issue... personally I would just FDR and wipe internal storage clear cache partition ( in the stock recovery there an option for that) and try with no SD card... if it still did it I would see if it did it with a stylus

I am having doubts about the FDR. After going to the Verizon Wireless store, I tested the Motorola Razr phones and they all had the same problem with the Droid 4. They all use Jelly Bean. I also tried scrolling with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The Note 2 (didn't check which firmware) was as fluid and accurate as the Droid 3.
Am I crazy or is everyone not able to notice the touch issues with the Droid 4?
its the static I tried to find the link for you with no luck... months back a guy had this issue also... I was going to suggest testing a VZW device if safe mode and FDR didn't work but that's what troubleshooting is...

I just tried Safe Mode, and scrolling seemed better. I don't have the scrolling/swiping issues as frequently after I uninstalled ADWLauncher EX.But then again, I never had that problem in the Droid 3, which I had the ADWLauncher EX installed on it. I still have the problem though. Whatever, I guess???
Droid 4 seems really to be very sensitive on touch. At the beginning I had the problem that when I tried to open a program from home screen (using Go Launcher Ex) I suddenly was on the next homescreen instead of having the programm opened. I was coming from Droid 1 and it took me 2 weeks to get used to it - but now after some month it happens just once a week to me.

I believe this touch issue that we are having is a design feature for the new Motorola Droid phones running JellyBean. I've gotten used to it but I think the D3 has a better touch screen.
I just want to update this very old thread to say that my Droid 4 no longer has that problem. I think it really was static that caused these issues. There hasn't been a single software update but over several months, the screen just got better.

[Q] HTC One top touchscreen problem - Bug or Hardware fault?

Hey,
I have an HTC One black - stock os - UK unlocked version - after 4.2.2 update.
I've got a strange problem regarding the top of the touchscreen. when the phone is horizontal, the top bit (between the top bar to the first widget) is not working. the rest of the screen working fine. when I pick the device up, the screen is working fine 70% of the time. as a result, I cant open the notification bar and it thinks that I'm clicking or re-arranging my widgets.
It's weird because IT DOES work 60% of the time.
1. did any of you experienced any of this before?
2. What do you think it is? software or I have to replace the digitizer?
3. Is it just calibration problem? I tried to calibrate the device using the keyboard screen calibration and it didn't do anything.
Thanks!
Eran.

Bump for more responses
I
I just started experiencing this same problem today as well. I was on a Google Edition 4.3 Rom for about 2 days, Viper 3.2 I believe and everything was initially working as it should. Suddenly I began experiencing the non responsive status bar. I cleared data & cache, fixed permissions, and even tried a factory reset with no luck. I then reinstalled the Rom and the problem persisted. I then downloaded and installed black jelly Rom along with a complete wipe of the entire storage after transferring important data to my PC, but the status bar was still unresponsive and it appeared the top 1/4 inch of display had a digitizer issue. I tried to restore an older backup of Venom Rom running Sense and I still had no luck, until I went into the browser so that I could rotate into landscape to see if I could access it from this orientation (don't know why that didn't cross my mind sooner?) After I pulled the notification shade in landscape I left it down and rotated back into portrait mode and drew the shade back up slowly, following through with the gesture all the way to the top of the display. Then the functionality from portrait was restored! I believe this is a software bug of some sort, but I'm contemplating returning it to stock and relocking the bootloader to return it. I'm actually using the Tmobile variant and it's only about 30 days old. My insurance will cover a replacement for a faulty unit, but who knows if will happen with another? After a Google search I discovered this was an issue that surfaced with quite a few One X's as well, so I'm thinking it may be a bug that's consistent with some HTC hardware of a different variants? Any updates or insight would be appreciated.

Touchscreen Fix, Testers Please

Go to System\usr\idc and open file clear_ped.idc with a text editor
look for the line
#Pressure
touch.pressure.scale=0.2
I changed to 0.1, save and close,
Secondly go to System\usr\idc and open file clearpad.idc
look for the line touch.filter.level = 2
I changed the level = 2 to level = 4
Reboot and enjoy.
My touchscreen now works flawlessly and I hope this fix works for others please test and report back your findings.
Remember to hit thanks if I helped you in any way.
You can try other settings, You can change the 4 , from 1-7 1 being most sensitive, not always best and 7 being the least. Each device will be different and vary in results. I wouldn't recommend going to 7 though as your touchscreen might become unresponsive.
I found 4 was the best on my handset,. Good luck.
I did that and I think it's a bit better now...

What Rom and Kernel are you on, I think some 4.3 ROMs still have an issue with the system being read only, I'm by no means a dev and you would need to read about this on whatever ROM you have thread, once you gain access to system being read, write you will have no issue saving.
Try other settings

I'm sorry I'm really not sure why it's like that, as other post said depending on your ROM, it's best to contact the developer who made it. If you're using stock, then reply to me and I'll try and help further

Try pressing and holding power button and volume up until it vibrates 3 times, after you've rebooted the phone.
If that doesn't work:
Best thing to do is link it up to PCCompanion and reset the phone to all it's factory settings. Try that?
Edit, best we talk here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49018376#post49018376

Hello guys! I came here to show you this video:
[Search Youtube for XPERIA Z1 タッチ切れ再現法 The method of reproduce] Sorry, new users can't post links it seems. But please check the video out.
I wanted to ask if any of you could give a reasonable explanation of it. If this is a software issue - how could it be reproduced in such a manner, by touching the metal frame of the phone? The video shows it pretty well. I also managed to reproduce the bug like this on my Z1. It has been in service for about 20 days now. I am worried that they might just 'mask' a hardware issue with software filtering. My initial assumption is that this is due to bad grounding? Why else would human contact trigger it? You can see it can be reproduced on-demand like this.
Thanks for reading! I hope someone can explain it.
Actually, you don't have to touch the metal frame!
Just put Z1 on a desk, wait for 30 seconds, touch screen and the bug will happen !

video demonstrates that a touch is being registered when touching the frame. It's kinda weird since why did the screen reacted to the touched frame. I have done that also and it's the same with me. But even after touching the frame and screen registered the touch, still screen fails to produce a continuous touch.
Sometimes it produces phantom touches which can be the cause of the random zooming and highlighting when browsing
Also tried changing the touch filter and failed to save. I think it needs root access
Im also facing such issue like I touched in sketch app & locked phone with other finger.Unlocked it while keeping the finger at same spot, then scolling the finger missed the touch
Also after playing GTA SA for about 30 min the touch sometimes stop responding.Any solutions
I tried above method but nothing works.I don't want to give this phone as I got it in replacement regarding yellow hue issue.

This is really a widespread problem across the globe. even Z1s owners are plagued by this problem and most likely even the z1 compact.
@Banwell13 I've not tried this as my touchscreen problem seems to have fixed itself? Strange.
But i'll definitely be keeping this thread in mind if it re-occurs.
Thanks for your efforts m8, appreciate it.

Think what he ment was if you hold the frame then the issue doesn't occur, well that's what happens on mine at least, putting it down on a desk usually makes the bug show it's face. Holding the frame fixes it.

Phone frequently hangs or touch screen unresponsive

I'm experiencing hangs or touch screen unresponsive, I think its the touch that stops responding unless you lock and unlock the phone.
I have three weeks with the phone and started yesterday right after a Factory Reset. Before that, it never happenes.

same thing happens to me from time to time, i have the phone for 8 days now, it started maybe 3 days ago, screen unresponsiveness happened maybe 4 times to this date
temp fix for me was downloading Google GO files and using it to delete cache, it works for now, no screen freeze up to this point
I think is not the same issue, I refer to touch issue thats come unresponsive some times until you lock and unlock screen. Now I'm testing android P which have another firmware for the touch panel. I will report later if dont presents the issue.
I installed the preview of the Android P developer and used it for two days and after a day of use I had the same problem, very disappointing, I went back to version 8.1, I do not understand why this happened, I never hit it, threw it, nor nothing. I was very carefully with it.
Has this issue been fixed yet?
We have a few of these phones in our family and one of them is doing this sporadically, several times in a row and then it's fine for days.
I can't see a pattern as to when it happens though.
Short Question : any of you using the Nova Launcher? Ive got same problem but using the Nova Launcher since years. Yesterday i did a clean Nova Launcher (stable) install and not taking my Backup file... And my Problem with hanging (Touch panel not recognized often my Touch) seems gone. Dont know why but after testing a whole of things im trying the standard Launcher and it works better.. So i did a clean install of Nova.

Hi guys, do you guys Enable or Disable "Tap to wake" function? If not, try enable that function, maybe that help.
Same problem in my Nokia 5.1 Plus. automatically touched at top of time side and battery indicated area. and i cant open notification bar.
I turned ''Tap to Wake'' on and my screen has worked perfectly since then. So i think this is definetely bug, not HW problen.
has anyone managed to solve this? its diving me nuts since the past few weeks and i dont know what to do with it. I would try to fresh install the OS but if that does not fix it, ill loose everything (game saves and such) but dont fix it.
i noticed sometimes the screen does some kind of refresh and then it starts working again. But mostly i have to lock and unlock to get it working again.

has anyone managed to solve this? its diving me nuts since the past few weeks and i dont know what to do with it. I would try to fresh install the OS but if that does not fix it, ill loose everything (game saves and such) but dont fix it.
i noticed sometimes the screen does some kind of refresh and then it starts working again. But mostly i have to lock and unlock to get it working again.
