QC 3.0? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

For those who have supporting chargers, can you confirm the device only supports up to QC 2.0? I know this is true with the S8/+, which is what I'm moving over from.

I talked to Samsung mobile tech yesterday and asked them and they said the Note 8 supports 3.0 charging. I also read it on a couple of websites. But some people still say it only supports 2.0. But the SD chipset supports 3.0. The European version does not have a SD chipset it only supports 2.0. But that's why I called Samsung to get it straight from Samsung and I made sure to ask him the same question 3 times to make sure he got what I was asking him.

The interesting thing - and why I ask - is that this phone is not listed on the Qualcomm page that shows devices which support it. What's more, as expected, the S8/+ (SD variant) show as QC 2.0 compatible.
I figured it might be a toss-up, unless people have had a legit chance to test this with QC compliant chargers. When I had my S8+, getting the phone to recognize it was connected to a quick charger was quite a challenge. I even bought new chargers and cables, thinking maybe the hardware was to blame. Nope, just finicky Samsung software.
Can you confirm you've achieved QC 3.0 charging speeds?

I've got the Exynos version and that works fine with my QC 2.0 chargers, I have the view that it was QC 2.0 only.
But I think the trouble you'll have is even if you use a 3.0 charger, QC is backwards compatible, and will use v2.0 if the device doesn't support 3.0, do I'm not sure how easy it will be for you test/check, unless someone has a Note 8 and has two chargers (one QC2.0 and another that's QC3.0) to perform some testing for you to see if there's a difference.

I have both. My wall plug 3.0 is coming in tomorrow. I have a 3.0 car charger now. But I am not going to sit in my car and test it lol. Tomorrow I will do a test and time both. The SD chipset in the Note 8 does support 3.0 QC. Now if Samsung did something from preventing it from charging at 3.0? But like I said that's why I called support and asked.

I have a qc 3.0 from iclever and it's shows the same amount of time to charge with the OEM fast charger.

I do not. You think this is why? I can't imagine that would be the reason.

Note 8 is QC 2.0 , however, a QC 3.0 charger will "gear down" to 2.0 when you plug the Note 8 into it.

I have a 3.0 quick charger that would work on my axon 7. Current would get as high as 3 amps while charging. On the Note 8 only getting around 1 amp but still says fast charging.

This was my assumption, just wanted to check to see if anyone had real-world experience to confirm it. I figured maybe since the SD variant supports the hardware, it might work. It's a shame Samsung doesn't implement support for Qualcomm's most current QC standards.

I think the cable does make a difference. The cable they give you in the box is 2.0 USB type c. They make 3.1 type c gen 1 will work

Also on Qualcomms website it shows s8 as only qc 2.0. Isn't note 8 the same hardware? So I doubt note 8 is qc 3.0

You know what all day I have been doing research on the Note 8 and 3.0 Quick Charge. Samsung told me that the Note8 supports 3.0 QC. But everything else I have read says no it has 2.0. Which sucks because my V20 had 3.0 QC. I am telling you my V20 charged faster way faster than the Note8. But my battery life is way better with the Note8. I usually don't have to charge my Note8 at all throughout the day. So does it really matter? No but it does suck that Samsung has not stepped up their game and put 3.0 QC on this 1,000 dollar phone.

Yep same here. QC3 and I get the same charging rate.

After N7 fiasco last year are you people surprised, Samsung stayed at 2.0? Somebody mentioned pulling 3 amp, not sure what voltage would that require, probably more than 5, maybe 9v? That would be between 15 and 27 W, my soldering iron is about 20 W. All you need is a small short or higher resistance connection for smoke and fire and with millions of users I'm sure people find a way.

I don't think that had anything to do with the faulty battery. It had 2.0 on the note 7. All the other competitors Flagship phones have 3.0. I think it has more to do with Samsungs own Exynos 8895 does not support 3.0 QC. So if they don't have it nobody will. Sucks

As long as the display is on QC is turned off. This comes from Samsung. They are so afraid of batteries burning up they did everything to reduce heat of the batteries. Though Samsung new batteries do a good job for not catching fire.

Every single review of N8 I read started with the reminder of N7 more than 6 billion dollar disaster and if you think last year events didn't affect future product developments, you're dreaming. I mean how difficult it would be for Samsung to update Exynos to 3.0 QC? Let's just say maybe it wasn't top priority ATM. Personally I think the phone charges fast enough and I remember my N7 was heating up so much during fast charge, that I disabled it, for fear of damaging battery and this was way before any reports of fire, yeah I got it on the first day it was available and it got hot on the very first charge.

This is the only one that I've found that claims to be Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 compatible. Kind of pricey. I'm waiting for more to come on the market, and hopefully drive the price down:

I'm going to pick one of those up after work today. I already called and have one on hold.
Thanks
I can confirm that the Verizon one linked above me does activate quick charge. I haven't used it other than testing but it did get the same notification I get with the turbo charger.
The Verizon car charger works. I have it and works just as good, if not better, than the turbo wall charger. Loving it.

I just bought this one below...
Here's a dual port Turbo car charger. Will work on non-turbo charge devices too. Won't burn them out. Downgrades automatically. They all do.
Extsud® Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 USB Intelligent Car Charger With Two USB Turbo Ports (36W)
$15.99
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XJ7OTS0?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
This charger seems to be sold under different brand names, like Extsud, Ivoler. Seems to be the same device, so this is the least expensive price I found. Here's the Ivoler below, a few dollars more, but seems to be the same thing -- except it comes with a USB cable. I have plenty of those already!
iVoler Adaptive Fast Qualcomm Dual Port Car Charger (with cable)
$18.97
http://www.amazon.com/Charger-iVole...ords=Qualcomm®+Quick+Charge+2.0+car+dual+port
Be careful! Some "dual port" car chargers have only ONE Turbo (Qualcomm 2.0) port, and the other is a regular port. Why? 2.0 technology is backwards compatible, will not hurt non-2.0 devices. So, silly for a dual port car charger being advertised as "2.0" to have only one actual 2.0 port in many cases. Read the descriptions carefully!
Both these (same device under two different brand names) does have TWO Turbo (Qualcomm 2.0) ports!
Motorola TurboPower Car Charger
I prefer the slim profile car chargers. Motorola just released one for $30...charger and cable...
I'd post links and photo but forum rules require >10 posts.
Someone tested this?

I guess I don't understand why you bought a dual port charger inferior to the one below and more expensive.
I specifically hate the dual port chargers that only come with one Quick Charge port. That makes NO sense. Both ports should be Quick Charge or nothing.
The one below has TWO Quick Charge ports, so no need to much around trying to figure out which is which. And the ports safely downgrade if it's not a Quick Charge device. You can charge a simple flip phone if you want.
And it costs less money.
Soon, all devices will be Quick Charge so you will need both to be Quick Charge anyway... When my wife rides in the car we both charge our Quark phones.
But again, if you plug a non-Quick Charge device into a Quick Charge port, it still charges just fine. So, no need to EVER buy a non-Quick Charge charger again.

Does anybody has any issues with chargers and external bateries?

Same with external batteries... i have 4... 2 work and 2 do not work...
Will be any problem with my phone? Or just an normal incompatibility? With my others phone a very few times this happen...
I have the S1 but i assume the S2 is the same, most of my third-party chargers charge at around 600ma and two of those are rated at 2.1amp , the original charger charges at 1550ma, though i have an Nokia 1.5amp charger that charges at 1400ma, So if you buy an third-party charger get it from somewhere you return it if it does not charge your S2 at an decent rate, you are best off buying the same charger as came with your S2, but beware that there are a lot of fakes that charge at a lot slower rate and give a really noisy and spikey output voltage that could damage your S2.
Have a read of the usb charger group test in the link below, It`s a couple of years old, and it does not give any compatibility information it just tests the quality of the charger and shows how bad fake chargers can be.
So my advise is buy an original geniuine Samsung usb charger and cables, and beware of fakes.
Oh, and usb battery banks are just as bad as usb chargers regarding compatibility, most dont charge at acceptable rates.

John.
Same problem over here, most of my 2amp chargers won't work. Luckily my nexus 6 charger works. When the red x shows i've seen a current of only 300mA
Lets just say that you need a good quality and branded charger to work (but not guaranteed), many fakes or cheap low quality charger does not work, as said in the two above post , you need a charger which is stable and true output to work, this also refer to power banks.
Although you do get the X in the display, the charger does still charge is if you really need to charge the tablet, but you have to completely turn off the tablet, although the charging time will be lot slower.
I have many chargers, some from the US, japan and china, and was expecting them to work, but they don't, sometime it's not the charger, but a compatibility between the charger and tablet, Samsung made this tablet and other models to be very picky.

Don't worry it's the way the tablet was made by Samsung, and it's not malfunction or a damage unit, I was like you when I purchased my S2 8.0 7th of this month, with my purchased, I left all the accessories and charger at the Samsung store (my friend works at the official Samsung store), and just took my tablet to china (I live in Hong Kong) right after the purchase to buy accessories like glass protectors, cases and what ever I can find, I had a two pin power adapter I got from Japan at 3.4mAh which seems like a good quality one, although it was made in china, works well, and does have a true output, but it didn't work for the tablet unless it was totally powered down (switched off).
Right now I'm after a small power adapter with two pin, as I don't have one that can power the S2, I have a few original Samsung three pin uk one's, these do not work in china, and I can't seem to find one, too many fakes in china, and many of these two pin adapters sold in hong kong are from china as well, so it's not something I can trust, although the shops states it OEM.
And the Samsung store only sells the UK version, right now if I'm in china I charge it using my power bank, I also have a few of these, and even gave a few away including a official Samsung one, that came with the S2.
Is bottom left, the plug type you are looking for, but you only need a plug with the bottom two pins.

They plug im looking for is a two flat pin, like the one found in the US and Japan, the problem is getting a authentic one, may be I should try one of those Qualcomm 3.0 quickcharge one.
Not much fake going around yet.
You need to have an Snapdragon SOC for the Qualcomm 3.0 quickcharge to work, and the quickcharge website only show galaxy note 4 as compatible.
You could just buy and usb adapter from eBay USA, you know they are genuine because they expensive and the p+p is almost as much as the item itself.

Yep, I know you need the snapdragon soc, as there are no fakes atm, im sure to get a genuine charger to use, even though it wont charger at the super fast rate.
Thanks
Charging that fast cannot be good for the battery, heat damages the battery so when you game or charge fast you reduce the battery`s life, unless they use an special battery.

Should be ok, got this from QUALCOMM site.
Q2: My device doesn't have Quick Charge 2.0. Is there a way I can get it?
A: Unfortunately not. Qualcomm Quick Charge technology is designed into a product by the manufacturer. The good news: there is a wide and ever growing list of phones, tablets, mobile routers, and applications that do support Quick Charge technology. Also, since Quick Charge 2.0 is compatible and interoperable, a certified adapter can be used with a non-Quick Charge 2.0 device, though the fast charging benefits of Quick Charge 2.0 will not be available. Nexus 5X just announce yesterday, google said it support fast charge, 5V @3a, TOTAL 15W, but never mentioned if it support qualcomm quick charge 2.0 . Since the Nexus 5X use snapdragon 808, it suppose to support quick charge 2.0?
But anyway, since the nexus 5x use the type c port, the regular car charger won't work it, at least you need to prepare another type c cable or adapter. but today i will recommend a tronsmart type c car charger:
http://www.amazon.com/Charger-Tronsmart-Qualcomm-Certified-Technology-USB/dp/B0146FK3G0/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1443600918&sr=8-5&keywords=type+c+car+charger
With this car charger, you just need to plug and charge your nexus 5x directly, and it also offer another port which support quick charge 2.0. So if your family have the old nexus 6 or samsung s6 etc, they also can get quick charge.
Let me know your thought about this little cool car charger?
The problem with that charger is it doesn't charge at 5V/3A like the charger that comes with the phone (USB Type-C 15W (5V/3A) charger). The Nexus 5X and 6P do not support Qualcomm Quick Charge technology, so the Tronsmart charger will charge it, but not at full speed.
We need a car charger that does 5V/3A and uses USB-C. The only one I've run across so far is this one: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B014F2NQ36
I assume there will be many more options in the coming weeks.

I agree, I hate the thought of using some shady off brand charger on a brand new phone.

I believe @Tronsmart is working on a 15W 5V/3A one now from what they said in the 6P section

Is that a reputable brand? All my aftermarket chargers have pretty much been either Anker or Aukey and I've had great success with them.

That's good to hear, I hope to see some Type-C 5V/3A chargers soon because I need/want tk change over most of my chargers from QC2.0 to the USB Type-C standard. I believe they would need to be Type-C to Type-C and not type a to Type-C in order to support the 3A at 5V which would make it even easier in the long run

So do you have an answer as to whether or not a type-a to type-c can support the 3A? I just received my "Google USB Type-c to USB A Plug Cable" and am curious. thanks!
Tronsmart said:
Hey there, the correct terminology of the" type-a to type-c" should be " USB A to USB Type-c". So "Google USB Type-c to USB A Plug Cable" is as same as "USB A to USB Type-c Cable" Only different expression

I am just writing exactly what appears on the packaging from Google...
I don't believe you answered my question...can that type of cable somehow charge at 3A? Thanks!
Tronsmart said:
Sorry for my misunderstand. Only type-c cable can charge at 3A. You can pay attention to the their ports to recognize them.

Will your updated car charger have a fixed cable kr a Type-C port? Also do you plan on making any wall chargers as well?

Saw that too during my search for a car charger and battery bank that supports 5V/3A fast charging. It doesn't but still interesting.

Has there been confirmation whether the Vinsic that everyone rushed to buy doesn't also split the 3A between its USB A and USB Type-c?

I wanted to get a 2nd one as a spare but since you aren't making one I bought the Google one ($43 later...) I would have preferred a Tronsmart one. I would have bought 2-3 if they were 15-20$

Anker Quick Charge 3.0 (Charger Review)

*Disclaimer*.....the S7 does not support Quick Charge 3.0. It only supports 2.0 but I may be picking up the G5 or HTC 10 which does support it.
I needed a new/extra charger so I figured I'd get something that supports the latest Quick Charge technology.
The charger itself feels well made. The prongs fold in for traveling purposes and it doesn't block the outlet/outlets sitting next to it. In regards to noise this charger makes none of it. Those who have used cheap chargers know the humming/buzzing noise I'm referring to. It's extremely annoying.
Now onto the part that really matters. I haven't had the time to compare this charger to the stock Samsung charger in regards to really putting them through the paces but early results look promising for the Anker.
I started the charge process with quick charge enabled at 5% and started a timer for 30 minutes. The stock Samsung charger was able to bring the battery to 43% while the Anker charger brought the battery to 52%.
Within the next few days I will do a test from 5% to 100% both with quick charge enabled and disabled.
On a side note I also picked up a 6 foot kevlar wrapped Anker micro USB cable. It feels well made and the connections are nice. I probably wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't on sale but I needed a new long micro USB cable.
So far I'd have to say that if you need another charger and you want Quick Charge 3.0 for another phone then go ahead and grab one. If you don't really need another charger or don't need Quick Charge 3.0 then I wouldn't waste the money on one unless you really want the slightly faster charging for the S7 Edge.

silly noob question alert:
Will qc 3.0 devices, charge the s7 edge at qc 2.0/fast charge rates?
Assuming you used an s7 for your charging experiments above, then it appears they do....thanks for post

No, it will charge at the same speed as a QC 2.0 charger since there S7/S7E don't support QC 3.0
That's exactly what I asked, re qc2.0 but thanks for clarification, I wasn't sure if qc3.0 was 'backwards compatible' kind of thing

It is backwards compatible with QC 2.0. I did a test of those chargers QC 2.0/3.0, Wireless, fast wireless that you can see in my signature. The charge times are identical as you will see.
awesome, cheers dude

Yes, quick charge 3.0 compatible with all qc2.0 supported devices, like S7 edge.
So I search on Amazon and find that Anker, iClever, Aukey released their new quick charge 3.0 usb chargers.
Could you check the numbers with Galaxy Charging Current?
When you refer to the Samsung stock charger, do you mean the wired one or the Samsung Fast Charge wireless charger?

Wired. I have no use for wireless chargers.
Once you go wireless you don't go back. lol I hate wires. I have four wireless chargers. Three were pretty much free. With T-Mobile Jump (phone junkie) I just sell my fast charging cablez and headphones for a few bucks since I don't need anymore. So why didn't Samsung put 3.0 charging in the S7 Edge?
I guess they designed the phone before quick charge 3.0 was available? Maybe it hurt they're bottom line? I don't know but whatever the reason it was a stupid decision.
The reason I don't like wireless chargers is because the only time I ever charge my phone is either in the car or while laying in bed. In both places I like using the phone while it charges.

No, QC has it as part of the SoC, si its supported technically but Samsung chose not to use it for an unknown reason.
They disabled it in the Snap dragon version because the other phone with their own SOC wouldn't support it so to keep the 2 on parity they disabled ours.

25W Charging? What happened to the 45W?

Accessories are always a wild card. Did we really just drop the 45W charging feature on the Note 20/ Ultra? Specs only listing the 25W. I have the official 45W accessory and other chargers that support the proper profiles for the PPS to work. Seems like wasted tech at this point.
Or is there something I'm missing?
Keep it for when it is reintroduced next year. If the rumors prove right we might have to purchase chargers separately anyway (or make do with old ones)

ah, yeah. I read the articles as well..
I'm currently using one of the HyperJuice 100W for my devices https://www.kickstarter.com/project...t-100w-gan-charger/posts/2919125?ref=activity
and this one on order https://www.kickstarter.com/project...t-100w-gan-charger/posts/2909520?ref=activity
That HyperJuice looks cool, but from the comments, it looks like people are having random issues with the charger and actually getting the charger..... I have been happy with Anker chargers anyway. I already have their newer PD car charger like 38 or 42 watts or what ever it is. I have not upgraded my wall chargers from Anker yet..... I am waiting for a 6 port USB C PD charger, but I doubt that will come out for a while because it would need to be over 100 watts.
samsung really watered down the note this year 45w charging is just one of the compromises on this device unfortunately.
not that there was a huge difference in 25 and 45 w charging times but thats not the point. The Note is supposed to be the workhorse the flagship so they should not be removing features.

I'm wondering is that a software flip they can make to enable it. I bought one for our two N10+ and when I need a lot of charge in a pinch, it delivers. I have it in the kitchen as central location. Forgot to charge it at night, getting ready in the morning, running down to 5%...set it for 15-20 minutes and we're good.
I don't know what crawled up Samsungs back side but it seems like we're being prepped for loss of features as a bonus for premium prices.
Headphone jack
FM Antenna
45watt charging
smaller storage
smaller battery
wired earphones
and soon to be charging brick.
Personally I'd like them to ditch the curved edges.

Just remember. When you're dealing with happy people, they tend not to post about it. When you're dealing with upset people, they tend to scream from the rooftops in our heard the loudest. Same with posting online...
I've had mine for a while now, and no issues at all with the hyperjuice. some of the edges were little sharper than I liked, I simply sanded them down and no issues.
The only real complaint I had was, it didn't support the full Gambit of USB PD profiles. So no PPS like Samsung was touting. Now that other one by CIO does support PPS and all the other standards. That one is really exciting to me

[emoji817] 100% I've been preaching and asking for the ir port to be brought back. I stuck with my note 4 through many generations until I killed it and couldn't get parts anymore for it.
@rosedog
Has to have the proper chipset #1
And also has to have compatible battery chemistry. The thicker charging leads on the boards, thermal sensors. Etc. Could be there. Guess we will find out soon enough with teardowns.
i bought a used alcatel 7, it has IR.
i carry it when i go travel, to change hotel tv input so i can stream my video.
