Question to the owners: Is this phone slippery? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

Hey mates,
I've read about 20 reviews, saw countless videos and such. Everyone said "it is plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap".
Not a single person talked about how it feels in the hand, if it has a "grip" or slides through too easily.
So, it is plastic with fiber-glass or carbon woven in, fine. How does it feel compared to:
- the wonderful soft touch back of the Nexus 5 or Moto X (1st gen.)
- a slippery glass back of any genuine phone
- the cheap plastic of a Samsung S3
Maybe a "slip scale" rating of 1 (not slippery) to 10 (very!) is highly appreciated.
Thanks

I'd say slip scale of 5/6 its not going to slide out of your hand but its certainly not glued to it either.

A few things.
From surface feel
It's not as slippery as the Galaxy S7 or S8. (owned most recently)
It's is not cheap feeling like a S3 (owned)
It is more slippery than the Nexus 5 and Moto X (owned both).
Of note is that this phone weighs 8% more than a nexus 5 (and 90% as much as a S8). This means it feels more substantial in the hand. That seems like it could make it easier to carry.

That's exactly what I wanted to have answered, thank you very much!
Now I'm still undecided haha but that's my problem for sure.

More slippery than a S5, I'd say 4.

Moto X Curve similar to the Old Nexus S?

I've been studying pictures of the 2014 Moto X but I can't really tell. I loved the curve on the old Nexus S...the front face of the Nexus S was curved where the ear and mouth ends had a slight curve upwards. Is the Moto X curved like this? Or is the curve only on the back and the front glass face is flat/straight?

No, it's not. The glass is perfectly flat except for the edges where it curves into the body.
What I'm curious about though, is why you would even think it would be curved like that in the first place?
The original Google phone with the ultimate curve... Nexus S. Notice how the face is not flush with surface because of the curve. it was a awesome design

I know about the Nexus S, I used to have one. The Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus are the only two phones that I can think of that have that curved front... why would you think Moto X would have that same design?

There have been a couple other curved phones from LG & Samsung, but they didn't see a wide release and I think were only available in Southeast Asia. Either way, every phone that has had any curve too it has ALWAYS been advertised that it was curved, and the Moto X was not mentioned as being curved, or even hinted that it wasn't flat.

Is the Moto X (2014) Durable?

After making another thread asking if I should get the Nexus 5 or Moto X (2014) and the clear winner was the Moto X so I'm pretty set on that.
So my question is how does the durability fare on this device? Mainly drop test, I don't want to have another indecent where my Nexus 5 was completely destroyed. It does have that metal band around it which is supposed to make it stronger. I've been looking all over the internet and the only thing I've found about the Moto X's durability is the Unboxtherapy video showing it doesn't bend, so does anyone have any personal experience with the durability of the phone? I don't really like cases and the way the Moto X is designed, tempered glass seems to be an issue
The Moto X 2014's build quility is top notch. Very sturdy and well put together. But, the front is made out of glass and the reality of it is glass will break if you drop it. Doesnt matter which phone you get. Also, I imagine that since the Moto X's glass panel kind of curves down onto the metal frame, it is more exposed to take a devastating hit if dropped on a hard surface.
This wouldn't stop me from getting this phone since i generally accept the fact that any phone that i drop on pavement or ceramic has a chance of shattering, but I get a thin polymer/rubber case and this will usually save me in the extremely rare event that I may drop my phone. Haven't dropped my X yet though.
More thoughts: the soft touch finish on my device is very durable and doesn't scratch easily (can't comment on leather or wood). My phone has been in my pockets with keys and other hard objects but the screen remains intact, free of even the smallest of scratches.
Even though some people don't like cases.... otterbox if your buying a case any way. When I got my Moto, I took my 2 year old S4 out it's otterbox, still in brand new shape... was dropped at least 4 times in the otterbox from 5feet... still able to sell it at a premium so even though cases may seem evil, they do what they are supposed to.
It's about as durable as every other phone.......
I dropped my Moto X once at a bar with wooden floors from roughly waist-height. There's a barely noticable scuff on the bottom-right corner of the phone, otherwise, still works perfectly. As long as it doesn't land screen-first on the floor, it should be able to take a fall.
Also, I'm sure you've heard: the leather-backs can get marked up very easily (though I've been taking really good care of mine). If you're truly worried about random deformities, you might want to consider the plastic back only.
I've had mine for a few months now without a case or screen protector. I dropped it once from about three feet and didn't see how it landed. I've noticed one tiny little chip above the earpiece, but other than that its still perfect.

Reports of delicate screen. What's your dropping experience with Moto X 2?

I've been very interested in a Nexus 5 32GB or Moto X 2nd Gen 32GB.
My first choice is the Nexus 5 32GB but it seems quite difficult to locate a US GSM version in new condition and within a reasonable price range.
While reviewing the Moto X 2 there is an alarming of reviews stating that the screen crackers very easily.
I would like to know what others have experienced while dropping their phone.
Did your screen crack? Did you have a case or screen protector?
Just get a thin case or halo and you'll be fine. The glass goes to the edge of the device so you so need a cushion there. I have the Naked Tough Case and my X has taken some falls with no issues. I also don't have a screen protector on and have zero scratches after a couple of months of use.

There is already a case and screen protector in my shopping cart. A large amount of reviews stated that the screen was really fragile but close to none mentioned if they had a case on the device or not. To me: not having a case is you get what you get.
But none the less without having accurate information negative reviews can be concerning for such an expensive buy. Thank you for your input; hope to hear from others too.
I don't use a case. The other day I dropped mine out of my shirt pocket about 3-4 feet onto a tile floor. I didn't even get a scratch.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk
I dropped mine two times (no bumber or anything), both times it fell out of my jeans pocket. It got some scratches on the edges but absolutely nothing on the screen. I bought a bumper from Case Mate about a month ago (it was really cheap on Motorola brazilian webstore) just as a fail safe, because I'm usually very careful with the phone, the problem is when I have a few beers
My phone had a MAJOR fall AND bounce and my phone didn't have a scratch on it. No case, no screen protector.

Great, thanks all for your feedback. I just wanted some opinions outside of the reviews.
If you drop it, it will break at some point. However, the screen is built better than others. You just need a very thin screen protector for the sides and it won't break. Mine fell on solid concrete face down, no scratches.
had my phone for about a month, had a case on the entire time, dropped it numerious times no proble. Decide to take the case off just because I missed the look of the phone, 2 hours later I dopped it facedown on concrete from about 3 feet, I was on a park bench, completely shttered the screen. I bought moto care so everything was fine.
I've dropped mine on a concrete floor from about 1.5m high, no case, screen shattered - phone is now officially worthless.
It was just too beautiful a device to be hidden away in a case!
Now it'll be hidden away in some drawer until screens for it become cheap, because I'm not going to pay 200 bucks for the repair, for a phone that would be worth 200 bucks if it weren't damaged. So yeah, after all, the experience with my Moto X was quite a fail. Nice phone and all, but the way how the display is glued to the front glass is just a major construction flaw, because it makes it impossible to easily repair the glass (although there are spare parts being offered for about 10-15 bucks out there).
Mixed for us. First off, we bought insurance on both of our phones.
My wife dropped hers twice and it shattered.
I have dropped mine countless times. Some of those times I picked it up and I was shocked that it wasn't broken. It really depends if it lands on the corners of the glass side.
Any smartphone I have ever had that i dropped without a case, the screen has shattered. That's why I have a case.

Nexus 5X sleeve / pouch

Hello everybody!
I would like to create a thread to reference available Nexus 5X sleeves.
Why I prefer sleeves over cases? Well, when I buy a phone I consider it because of its design. And the very problem I encounter with the case is that it changes the design of the phone.
I like holding the phone in my hand but at the same time I also like to protect it. Hence the sleeve.
It gives the phone full protection and at the same time I am able to "feel" the phone when I use it.
However I don't see a lot of sleeves available for the Nexus 5X. I saw some on Etsy but nothing very exiting.
Who is looking for similar sleeve? Any ideas?
Not sure where you are based, but the german company fitbag do some EXCELLENT sleeves for pretty much every phone. Available on Amazon (.com and co.uk) and direct from fitbag.
Had one for an Galaxy Nexus (brought pretty much at release) and it was still going strong a couple of months ago when the phone was sold. Quick run through the washing machine and it was as good as new.
Picked up their 5x version and it's equally as good.
Great quality and value for the price... Highly recommended!
I bought a fitbag from Amazon. To be honest it's not great and the material attracts loads of dust and dirt. Unfortunately I haven't found any alternative.
https://www.etsy.com/search?q=Nexus 5X pouch
Be careful with a slip case and a naked phone. I bought one for my Ice Blue 5X and suffered noticeable wear on the back corners and sides of the device, so much so that, after an argument with Carphone Warehouse, I exchanged it.
I like a vertical leather pouch with a belt clip. Currently using one from PDAir, but I bought it a few years ago for my Galaxy Nexus - it just barely accomodated the Nexus 5, and it's just no good for the Nexus 5x. So...
Looking at a new PDAir pouch, it looks like maybe the one for the Sony Xperia Z3 would be the right size.

Interesting comments. I remember buying a fitbag for my moto x 2014. Unfortunately due to the curvature of the moto x the phone wasn't fitting nicely enough. I'll try the sleeve for the nexus 5X just to see how it fit although it's not the right size.
The cases on etsy are a little bit too common I feel. I hope we'll see some nicely build sleeve from well-known manufacturers soon
Just ordered the gray leather fitbag from Amazon. 24.90 no tax and free shipping. Will update when it arrives

I contacted caseable dot com who told me to use the nexus 5 case. When I pointed out the size difference, I never heard back. Nice cases, poor customer service.
Hi, I just ordered this one, it looks really nice in brown color...

Waterproof Case

What is the best waterproof case, for taking the phone into the shower. Also, is the S-pen water resistant?
Why bother? Ive had my phone in the pool and shower since I got it. As long as you blow the water out the charging port and speaker, it'll be fine. Everything is pretty much waterproof. Enjoy it.
Phone is IP68, and I have had it submerged already. S pen is also IP68, no problems there.

For most days the phone will be just fine getting wet. Even at the pool.
However there are still day even ip68 won't be enough.
I recommend just getting one of the below options. By far the best way to keep the device dry even if it's in the water for days.
Mpow Universal Waterproof Case, IPX8 Waterproof Phone Pouch Dry Bag for iPhone8/7/7plus/6s/6/6s plus Samsung galaxy s8/s7 LG V20 Google Pixel HTC10 (Clear 2-Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I1430WQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Gs5YzbASDWPPM
Universal Waterproof Case, JOTO CellPhone Dry Bag Pouch for Apple iPhone 7/7 Plus/6S/6/6S Plus/SE/5S, Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 Plus/Note 6 5 4, Google Pixel HTC LG Sony MOTO up to 6.0" -Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LBK7OSY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_vv5YzbMJA5ZTZ
I have literally taken a phone Scooba diving with the joto.
It was awesome got some cool pics
For Scuba diving or beach use in general use a case. Thinking of it, why use this phone Scuba diving anyway? I'd have to step it up to my GoPro Hero in that case.
Try ghostek. It has a good waterproof case. I'm waiting on mine. Will update you guys about how it is.

I have this one. I haven't tried it out other than the sink.
Samsung Note 8 Waterproof Case, SixQu Transparent Protective Cover Full Body Shockproof Case for Galaxy Note 8 (6.3inch) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0753BMBBJ/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_2EfZzbXPVPDY8
LIfeproof cases, but Lifeproof seems to be part of the Apple fan club with limited Samsung cases and then they refer you to Otterbox which are not "water proof".
I bought this and its on slow boat crossing the seas.... be here oct3-19...

I am glad it is ip68 BUT on the beach, I am more worried of the salt water and/or salt water dried sand!!!!
Thanks for the replies. For those saying to just take the phone in the water and it'll be fine. I think it's best not to risk it, especially since warrenty doesnt cover it and I make limited funds per month and live paycheque to paycheque.

I just my case in a few days ago and LOVE IT... however, with that comment, it would be my daily case but I cannot due to the biggest problem. SPen is tough to get out and they give you a tool to do so.
with that I had a redpepper case on my note 3 and it had no spen port so I give these guys props for putting it there and hope they look at my review I put on amazon (being approved hopefully) and think of how to do it differently.
my review I put up was..
I do not usually write reviews; however, this product needs one!
I have never had a case on my note 3, just a screen protector film and it shows... But I have always had a redpepper note 3 waterproof case which was 3 stars at best...
now this case...
I have not had a case on my note 8 and we do go to the beach a lot so even though this phone is ip68 - I still need a case.
Pro's
Case style - Very slim - feels nice in the hands, looks great, great pen response on cover, great finger response with cover getting edge app to slide out. contoured shape around the glass is very nice, back is done very nice with it also being contoured in a bit so you can lay phone down and know camera/etc will not lay on desk.
sound is clear playing videos with all ports closed
charging port open - even using micro usb to micro c - fits great and no issues
headphone port - OEM headphones plugged in nicely and no issues
volume up/down and power button (I don't use Bixby) - very well made, nice feel, and feel comfortable using
material - case appears to be well made soft plastic (opposed to the redpepper which is hard and constantly chips pieces off)
Con's
fingerprint - tough to get working but it works and have to maneuver finger around a few times.
SPen - my biggest gripe and why this case cannot be my daily and will only be used at the beach, a tool supplied to get the pen out. you CANNOT get the pen out no matter what you do without a tool of some sort thus a 4 star.
conclusion:
Would be my daily case if it wasn't for the required tool to get the SPen out. My wife made a comment asking me if there is a holder for the tool and I said ummm no and I don't want to need to use a tool but the more I think about it... I would be fine if there was a little sleeve or something for that tool to slide into. My note 3 had a redpepper case for just the beach and there is NO pen port, so I give these guys credit for having the port but there needs to be some easier accessibility. Maybe the pen clips into the rubber before pushing in or something... just an idea...
I'm going to do a youtube video on this (never done one of those either) as this case deserves it. I am HIGHLY impressed! with it and the cost as it is close to what I would expect from a lifeproof case and I have bought many for my wifes iphones over the years.
---------- Post added at 08:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:09 AM ----------
^^^ Correction... after searching amazon for Note 8 waterproof case, I have found that there are others and most are pretty much the same.
few even had the same tool, ughhhh BUT I noticed one that had no tool and said to use the rubber plug (which had a groove in it) to retrieve the SPen.
I then decided to try that with mine and guess what IT WORKS!!!!! only thing is the SPen sits there, and not "clicked" into its spot. Doesn't seem to be an issue yet but time will tell.
Update. Got my freebies in.. wireless charging not working. Crap. Back to no case

I have a rhinoshield crashguard on my Note8 which is a hassle to remove. By superthin case, I assume you meant something like the clear plastic back one from Samsung with almost no thickness addition on any side. In that case, does your Note8 barely fit the Joto or do you have a little bit more space left on top/bottom?

I have a carbon fiber Pitaka case it's only a few hairs thick. It's a tight fit at the top for it already anything thicker may be an issue, but I believe there are similar products to Joto that could fit the phone.
