USB port, tiny bit of play? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

Do you have that to? It's a tiny tiny bit loose all four directions. Original cable. No problem with the connection. Its snug when inserting and pulling out.
Checked with my Samsung S5. It has more play, so I guess it's ok.

That's by design.
As long as the connection is good, there's nothing to worry.

Thank you! That's relaxing to know.

Remember the standard USB plugs, and when you try to plug them in, they get caught on the housing, but you think you put them the wrong way and rotate them, just to notice they're actually the wrong direction now?
That's to prevent that.

Yes, all too good. Why the S5 wireless charging is great! Wireless charging doesn't matter very much with the XZ1C because of the USB-C.

Have ordered Wsken magnetic cables to be on the safe side. The USB on my Acro S went broke a long time ago.

I had a magnetic cable, but it stuck out too much for my taste.
Tried to modify it so that it goes in further, but destroyed it in the process.
I'd love to have a flat one, tho.

Was is Wsken? It has great reviews on Amazon. Cannot order from Amazon. Doesn't ship to my country, so I ordered from Ebay.
Flat magnetic cable? Got to check that.

Charger not staying in the port?

I haven't had this problem till recently, maybe the last two days at most, anyway, the phone isn't charging when I plug it in. Before you ask, yes, the door is completely open, that isn't the problem. I plug it in and it doesn't notice its there, if I wiggle the charger around a bit it'll start to charge, if I push is slightly outward (towards the screen) it has no problems, it just feels extremely loose...
Of all the samsungs I've ever owned the charging port breaking has always been the biggest problem, I was afraid that was what happened to mine but since it works fine if I move the charger im thinking that isn't the problem.
Just curious if anyone else has had this problem, I can live with it for three weeks till I upgrade and get back to HTC, but its just plain annoying!
My charger port is a bit hollow as well. The charger will come out very easily, but it's been long since this started happening.
The usb cable they sent out with this phone is garbage. Swap it for any other and you will more then likely get a perfect fit.
I'll be sure to try that tonight, I have a spare blackberry usb in my bag. Last time I tried using another cable I kinda had to force it in the port since it didn't want to fit, it seemd like it was because it was catching on the battery door so I swapped back for the oem cable since it is shaped Correctly.

This happened with my laptop wayyyy to many times, the type of charger in the phone is the male on the phone and female on the cord, same is my laptop, i noticed that immediately and i am ALWAYS careful with the cord with my laptop and phone, i went through at least 3 cords before i got the right one, look at more forms and NEVER get the cheap cord. Because then it'll be three cheap cords but one good cord is less expensive
Hey! I have the same problem..
I'm just buying a new charger.seems to be the only solution

Search Amazon for "blackberry usb cable micro usb". The first result should be it, it's a very high quality, shielded cable. To get a solid, snug fit I suggest a razor or a knife to easily cut back some of the rubber around the micro tip. Works amazingly well. I could even make it work before I trimmed it.
I have this same exact problem, but its the other way around - the cable that I received with the phone seems to "click" into place and doesn't come out of the charger port readily.
I bought some shorter cables to use with the wall charger from monoprice.com and they just fall right out, and I don't know what the issue is.
The "official" charger I spent $30 from AT&T for my car, however, also clicks into place and seems very secure.
I guess it just depends on the cable you buy.
My Samsung OEM cable is junk now as well. It has no problem making contact, but it doesn't fit snugly anymore and will slide out with minimum provocation.
I have three Monoprice.com cables that fit great, especially the 28 awg without ferrites. That is, until I dropped the phone on the plug and damaged it. Oh well, better the cable than the Captivate. I also have two cables from Meritline that fit nicely, as does the charger cable for my Bluetooth headset.
It's really just the Samsung cable that's junk. I always recommend Monoprice cables as they are high quality and very inexpensive. Keep in mind, however, that they don't sell a micro USB cable that does not require modification to fit the Captivate's beveled socket.

Has anyone used a magnetic usb cable with there m8?

Hey everyone, I have just seen these usb adaptors that clip into your usb port. Then magnetically connect to a USB cable for data/charging. Anyone using one? Would you recommend?
Here is an example
WSKEN XCable Magnetic USB Cable
https://www.amazon.co.uk/WSKEN-XCable-Performance-Compatible-Smartphones-Silver/dp/B00XJQHBOA
Interesting. I didn't know those were available. I wonder how well they'd work with the M8...
Looks like its a standard friction fit in the USB port, but you leave it inserted all the time. The magnet is only used to connect the cable to the port adapter.
The perk of wireless charging because it doesn't wear out your port, but it should be a lot more efficient and run a lot cooler than using a wireless charging adapter.
I may have to order a few. I wonder if it will play nice with quickcharge2.0... hmm...
Hi, yes, interesting. I can see a big advantage from not pluging/unpluging.
But from the photo it looks like the flat magnetic part will cover the headphone socket.
Anyone tried this (or similar) yet?

I don';t think it will because if you look at the picture you can see the "plug" you put in your phone is the same width as the other end of the cable, I just compared that to a USB cable I have here, seems to be enough room, but not for big 3,5mm plugs I think, I think it would leave like 2mm space
Hi, had a quick look on Amazon and they have similar ones with the plug in part that looks smaller. only thing is some reviews say they fall out too easily. Also needs to be checked with clearance for your own case (if you use one).
If I see one in a shop I would like to give it a try though.
It has really bad reviews. I am looking for a good replacement cable. Don't know why HTC doesn't sell them for the M8 or M9. I have tried different brands Anker and they are junk. Can't find a good cable that doesn't wear out. Any advice would be great.

I ordered these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/152249400751?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT) from ebay and I absolutely love them. If I just touch the nub, that's inserted in the phone, to the end of the cable, it hops on perfectly connected and charging. One of the best (and fewest) things I ever ordered from China. I hate waiting for non-domestic orders, so I try to avoid them as much as possible. Magnetic usb charging is now my favorite new unnecessary luxury in my gadget life.

Is the cable part reversible? It looks like it would be, but there is no info in the listing to indicate definitively if the mag part has to be in a specific orientation.

Yes it is. You can flip the magnet end either way (upside down/right side up) and it will grab and hold pretty firm. Notice it has an even numbered amount of pins (10 - two rows of 5) this is key to a "flip-able" attachment.
Hi,
Well, nearly 8 weeks later and my magnetic cables just arrived. From China to Dubai with Christmas and New Year in between so...
The good news is they are excellent. Very tight to get in the usb port (which is good), very small and fits with my phone cases. As said above, its reversible.

Is there any way to get Qi wireless charging with this phone?

I am considering buying an Xperia X because of the Wet finger tracking. My current Samsung doesn't support that, and since I do a bit of lobster and crab fishing, and I use an app (Fishing Points) to note what I get and where I put the pots, I am rather annoied with the Samsung since any drop of water on it will mess up my usage. And trying to dry out a phone in a small boat is kind of annoying. But then I see that the X doesn't support Qi wireless charging, and I have that in my home office, my car, on my motorcycle and next to my bed. Going back to where I have to actually plug in a cable seems so incredibly stone age. So are there any solutions for Qi compatible wireless charging that works on this, and that doesn't compromise waterproofing?

Yes, add a USB receiver.
Thanks, I see that you have that phone! You mean with the flat cable going into the battery bay? I did look into that, but found that it will compromise the waterproof seal. Or is there a way to do it that doesn't?

It's a receiver that connects through the USB port of the phone, it do e's not affect any waterproof seal, although you probably need to dry the usb port before charging, this is the same with all phone if it just came out of water.
Thanks! But do you mean that I have to plug that in every time I need to charge the phone and then put it in the Qi charger, or that it's stuck to the outside of the phone? In the first case it's really just another way of plugging in a regular charger...

Go to ebay and search for qi receiver, there are many available, although depending which one you get will vary in quality.
Yeah, I've seen those. I'm afraid they will be ripped off in my pocket, I think. So maybe the best bet is two phones and a twin SIM, so I have one for regular use and one for fishing. Or wait until spring and see if Sony gets their act together and actually deliver an expensive phone with the most common wireless charging option.
Just use a case with the receiver, sony knows about qi, they have a offcial qi case for the Z5, but decided not to use qi, and opt for fast charging instead.
Good point, a thin case with the receiver inside would probably be a good solution! Thanks! And Sony didn't think that one through. It makes it less likely that Samsung people, who often have a bunch of QI stuff from their phones, will convert. Fast charging is OK, but I prefer to put the phone into the car holder or on the bedside table and start charging without having to plug anything.
This one could be the right type:

nillkin has the best receiver so far if you are in for a USB receiver, unlike the one's sold on ebay, they just use a thin sticker with the circuit in between, the nillkin uses thin plasic, and is very stable, I have the nillkin one for my XP and V20. USB is availabl;e in two version, A and B.
The offcial sony one is pretty thick, not worth buying, but that is for the Z5 only.
Thanks! I'll get that when I change phone, then. But the picture is of a case I can use on the phone, not a receiver.
In case anybody else wants to try this, it works. But not with the pictured case, that creates pressure on the back of the phone which gives color blotches on the screen. So I found my solution in a so called "Slim Rubber Gel Case Cover" and the Nillkin receiver. Problem solved, and it works quite nicely. I rarely need to to connect my phone with the USB, but it's quite easy to pop off the case and remove the receiver.

Charging Port Replacement

Whenever I plug my phone into my computer and wiggle it around a bit it disconnects. It's a brand new cable too. I'm assuming I need to have my charging port replaced?
Never assume. Check to see if it happens with a different cable first. If it repeats with the second cable, then take the phone in for servicing.
It would not be worth to replace the charging port. It is time to get a new phone, isn't it?
It would be far less expensive to replace the port than to replace the device. Besides, without actually taking apart the N6, we don't exactly know what's going on. The connector could truly be damaged, or it could be a simple issue of the connector losing connection with the motherboard due to a bad solder joing; something that some skill with a soldering iron could resolve.

Indeed, it is that time. The only phones that meet my needs (fast wireless charging, USB 3.1, Bluetooth 5.0, microSD, etc) are the s8s so I'm going to wait for the Note 8. The Essential PH-1 is also on the radar but I really don't want to go any smaller than a 6" display.

Have you tried to remove any lint with a toothpick or similar tool? Doesn't cost anything to try a thorough cleaning before anything else...
You could also use a magnetic micro USB adapter, people say they fit very tight in the plug

I'm pretty sure the port was just dirty. I blew in it (like the old Nintendo games) and now it stays connected while wiggling the cable around rather forcefully.

Looking to buy N10 POGO Cable

Pretty much like the title says, looking for a place to buy the N10 pogo cable. I know the tablet is a relic at this point, but it still does what I use it for just fine (mostly youtube/twitch), and the usb connector is dying. If you're selling, or know of a place to buy one, please let me know! As far as I can tell it's not available anywhere anymore.
My wife still uses her N10 with pogo cable. I'll be sure to offer it up here whenever that time comes.
I still check ebay and google every so often to see if for some reason they go back on sale (ya never know when someone might find a box of them in a warehouse somewhere), but I never turn up anything sadly. Someday maybe...

Good luck. I actually contacted some cable manufacturers in China a while back interested in a group buy type thing but they informed me it would be around $15k USD just for tooling alone and then there would be a minimum order of a couple thousand units.
Hasn't someone reverse engineered it and just 3d printed a connector casing?
With my non existent engineering experience I see it as chopping the end off a USB cable and soldering the wire to little copper contacts.
So soldering is fiddly and flush mounting the contacts will require a modicum of precision. To an experienced enthusiast that has to take less than five minutes.
The 3d print can be rough with a tiny bit of hand finishing.
Little magnets...
made for £($)5 sold for £($)15?

It's not as simple as that. If you just solder off the end of usb, it will still charge at 5V.
The Pogo cable has more than 4pins that standard micro USB cables use, and we need 2 more pins for who-knows-what-for.
This is why most of us still don't have a pogo cable, even though it looks simple enough.
