Install Alexa assistant on Android One version - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

Anyone know of a way to do this? I assume the apk would have to be extracted from the regular retail version and installed by hand, if that's even possible.

I have this phone through Amazon and though it comes with an app called Amazon Alexa. This app does not work like an Alexa device i.e. Amazon Echo, etc. It is more of an app to control you Alexa enabled devices.

The android ONE version comes with no alexa assistant, which is different than the alexa app (that anyone can download). The other retail version that is not the android ON version has the Alexa assistant which acts like an alexa device. That's what I'm talking about. From the moto site:
specifications
Compatible with Amazon Alexa
Use Alexa wherever you go—without even unlocking your phone
Alexa, let’s get out
of here
Now you can use Amazon Alexa on your
moto x⁴—without unlocking it. Whether you're out and about or at a friend's house, the features and benefits of Alexa are always with you.

Quite possible. Retail X4 build comes with an app called 'Moto Alexa' which seems to be what you are looking for. Anyone running a retail X4 should be able to extract it. Alternatively, The 7.1.1. firmware posted under the development subforum appears to be retail X4 firmware, so the Moto Alexa app could be extracted from that. Whether it would work appropriately after being sideloaded on a non-retail X4 (i.e., Android One, Amazon), I could not say.

I would be interested in getting Alexa on a Fi X4 as well. Thanks!

We should work on this! Even better, a universal port of the Alexa assistant would be amazing.
I have a few devices that support alexa, I'll start poking into the builds and see if i can isolate the necessary stuff.
This may require a whole custom rom to integrate properly, side loading probably will work like poo.
Still worth a try.
I think i just found a new hobby for 2018.

Nexus 6 and the Lack of Moto Suite

I'm really torn. I strongly prefer the size, battery and specs of the Nexus 6 over the MotoX. The only thing that gives me pause is the lack of Moto Suite. I find the Moto Suite features valuable (things like read/respond to text while driving, etc.). I also like the always listening Moto Hint Bluetooth Earpiece and it's advanced features that presumably only work with Moto phones. I know theres been some talk of the possibility of Moto Suite possibly being made available/porting to the Nexus 6. Any recent information/thoughts on this?
I would really like to see this also. Maybe it can be ported to the Nexus 6 somehow.

Still though...Motorola bricking hardware accessory features (earpieces etc.) doesn't make any sense for Motorola, Nexus phone or not. I'd expect the hardware accessories to have a way found to make them work.

I do have a Moto X the old one it's my work phone and it's actually has a lot of good stuff. Very useful and fun. If the hardware is the same as moto I believe someone will do it.
Agent app is a good replacement for moto assist texting while driving feature. It works basically the same. I used it on my nexus 5. I'll miss small things about touchless control like "what's up?" And how it will read your notifications. The option voice command a call and it'll automatically use speaker phone. "Find my phone" and it'll start ringing so you can locate it in a room.

I'm not sure what you expected? This is a phone made by Motorola for Google's Nexus line of devices. The Nexus line of devices are very well known to be AOSP (Plus the required drivers and kernel to make it work) + Google Services and that's it. If you want a device that has this, wait for Motorola to make a device with the same or better internals, same screen but not a Nexus device, look for alternatives to the Moto Suite on the play store, or figure out how to make the Moto Suite work on the Nexus 6.
Thanks for all the replies/suggestions so far. No, I wasn't/am not now "expecting" anything. However, I think I reflect a lot of others feelings that the Nexus 6 with Moto Suite included would be a better device. Alternatives in the Play Store are a possibility, however incomplete and far from seamless. Somehow getting the Moto Suite itself to work would be ideal. (Generating ideas of how to accomplish this is the purpose of this thread). Although I'm still "on the fence", waiting for Motorola to make a device with a similar screen size and same or better internals is certainly a possibility for me.

Moto Suite works on every phone made by Motorola, except Nexus 6, it is totally unacceptable esp since the hardware is completely compatible.
We can assume that some Moto apps that are available in the play store will be available to install.
My friend has a Moto G GPE and he was able to install Moto Mirgrate, Help, and camera, no modifications needed. However, Moto Assist shows as incompatible with the device.

Since this is AOSP the framework files are most likely not there. This is also not an ordinary Moto device, this is a Motorola device designed for Googles Nexus line.

You sir obviously do not understand what the Nexus line is. This is barebones Android at its best.

It makes perfect sense and is totally acceptable. Moto suite is a feature for Motorola's flagship devices(I.e. all of them, x,g,e). The Nexus 6 is not a Motorola device. Its a Google device only manufactured by Motorola.
We are however already seeing many of the great features that were exclusive to the first round of moto devices from last year built into Android such as Ambient Notifications, always listening "OK google" which is great. I'm sure well see more to come as google kept a lot when they sold Motorola.

Ambient display looks similar but in no way is close to moto display. Moto display uses the low power contextual processor in order to save battery. Ambient display uses the amoled ability to fire up specific pixels in order not to waste battery. The minute you interact with ambient display the screen fires up 100 percent. Moto display let's you interact without ever using the primary processor until you unlock. It's a step in the right direction but not there just yet.

As the OP, I don't want to see this thread go down the path of of bickering of what "should be" expected or not. Even as a "pure android" device, no one has ever stated that the Moto Suite would be a negative. All seem to agree it would make it a better device. This is a community of techies/hackers. After the device comes out, perhaps a path will be found to implement it. For those of us who feel this feature is important enough (myself included), we will wait and see what happens after the product is in the hands of developers. If it's not possible, than waiting for a future Moto device with similar specs to the Nexus 6 is an alternative.

"Android Auto" in 2015 Kia Sorrento?

I just purchased a 2015 Kia Sorrento SXL AWD last friday, It won't be at my dealer until monday.
I have already set up my account on MyUvo.com, I see that the update for android auto and apple car play is only compatible with the 2016 model.
Its odd that the 2015 and 2017 are incompatible, and even more odd "to me anyways" that the 2014 Kia Soul is compatible with the update to install android auto and apple car play.
Has anyone been able to install the update on the 2015 Sorrento?
I was able to locate the files on this site last year to add navigation to a 2014 Edge Limited that we had. I would sure love to have the android auto software in my 2015 Sorrento.
I used the search and found nothing on this site, I am hoping someone knows something or can guide me in the right direction.

That does sound strange that the 2017 model is not compatible. If you can't flash it you might have to get one of those cheap Chinese replacement head units.

please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I honestly have zero experience with android radios.
From my small amount of knowledge about the OS in the Kia sorrento, the 2015 uses windows CE (i believe 6.0) but the 2014 Kia Soul must use android in order for it to accept the android auto update. I have wondered if I could get the 2014 Kia Soul radio and install it in the 2015 Sorrento.
My question is about the Chinese android radios (if by chance you might know) if I got one of those cheap chinese radios, does it by chance keep the controls for the seat ventilation/heating, and the Hvac controls on the screen amongst any other things that the factory radio controls on the touch screen.

No you almost certainly can't install the Kia Soul radio software onto the Sorento as the hardware is probably different. If you mean the actual radio, possibly but I'd think it would be too different.
The Chinese radios/headunit can vary, some will some might not, but I don't know about Kia specific models though. Just search the net eg
https://m.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...a+sorento+head.TRS0&_nkw=kia+sorento+headunit
This is for a 2016 but may be of interest

Q re difference between Moto X4 and Moto X4 (android one version)

Hello,
I ordered the Moto X4 via Motorola.com, however I've been debating about returning it and getting the Android One version instead. I've been searching online however and I'm having a hard time finding a full list of the definitive differences between the two versions.
I know the Motorola version comes with Alexa and some of the Moto Actions (chop for flashlight, twist for camera, etc.). To me, those are some of the selling points for the Motorola version, as I use those features a lot. I'm wondering though - does anyone know definitively is those options are included with the Android One version as well? What about the Active Display feature as well?
I appreciate any clarification anyone can provide!
The Moto actions you mentioned work on my project fi Android one x4.
Not sure what active display is.
Yes, both Moto Actions and Active Display are in the Moto App on the Android One version.
Not sure on the regular X4, but the System Partition on the Android One version is quite large at 13.1gb leaving just 18.9gb for apps and user data.
Unfortunately the Android One version is only available in 32gb with the regular version you have the option of 64gb and a increase in RAM to 4gb.
Might be something to think about if you install a lot of apps and want to keep your SD card as portable.

Fire 2017 Model - How well does Google Play work + Charger port question

I am thinking of buying the current Amazon Fire 7 tablet. Two questions:
1) I understand that you can install Google Play on it. In practice how well does this work?
I had one of the early 2013 Fire tablets. Although you could install Google Play, it didn't work that well especially with Apps that were expecting things that weren't available on FireOs. In the end I had install a custom rom on it, but I understand that it's possible with the current model.
2) On the current model, how strong is the charger port? With the 2013 model it broke after a few years, so I was no longer able to charge it.
Thanks!

Google Play works much better under FireOS v5 than previous builds. Your previous experience was likely with v3 although things weren't much better under v4. That said, there are a handful of apps that must be side loaded as the Play Store believes they are incompatible with the hardware or ROM.
I have not heard/read about systemic problems with the charging circuitry on 5th-7th gen devices beyond sample defects. However, overall build quality of 5th gen devices definitely leans toward 'value'; 6th/7th aren't far behind. Might last a few years with reasonable care.

Catching Up with the Amazon Fire...

Hey Guys -
I've been using XDA for a few years now to mod my many other Android devices, but today; was talking to wife and she isn't happy with her Amazon Fire tablet as she says it's too slow and is sick of all the ads. It's a 7" 5th Generation running 5.6.0.1 and all I've done to it in the past is install Google Play on it.
What would be my best option / ROM to load which would basically turn it into a simple yet stable Android device? I looked at LineageOS & a couple of others in this forum, but unsure which is the most stable - and - if it's even possible to install any of them on a 5.6.0.1 device. I planned to test out a couple as I thought I had rooted when installing Google Play long ago so grabbed TWRP and installed FlashFire - but when launching FlashFire I was told it was not rooted.
What would you suggest be the way to go to achieve this goal? Thanks!

Unfortunately, allowing FireOS to update beyond 5.3.2.0 permanently removed the ability to root and/or install custom ROMs. It's FireOS in all it's glory from this point forward. There is a convoluted way to remove some of the Amazon bloat but you probably don't want to go there as it's not for the faint of heart. Most who travel that route have less than satisfactory outcomes. 5th/7th gen Fire 7 devices are getting long in the tooth and are decidedly underpowered for the tasks Amazon demands of it. Your better half is probably looking a new device if she is significantly dissatisfied.

Some folks over in the HD 8/10 forum seem to be making headway with achieving root, some of which might apply to the Fire 7.
However, I do have to agree the 5th gen Fire 7 I have is barely a functional tablet at this point with the stock ROM.

HD 10 has a different underlying architecture utilizing different kernel and ROM components exposing new vulnerabilities that are being exploited. Amazon will undoubtedly close those as do all manufactures. In contrast HD 8 uses the same architecture as the Fire 7. Realizing root on that device is highly unlikely.
It will be interest to see what Amazon does with the next hardware refresh. Me thinks the Fire 7 will be gone with either an adjustment on the HD 8 price point or the addition of some other gizmo to fill the gap.

From what it looks like so far, it looks like the current progress for the Fire HD 8 is less so "root" and more like "uncovering hidden features we never knew we could use on Fire OS".
I do notice the Fire HD 8/HD 10 have gotten more of the spotlight recently. The Fire 7 (even the 2017 version) just isn't the $50 bargain it was two years ago. The HD 8 2017 has already dropped down to only $80 new.
Less people are buying the 7" tablet now, because it almost seems "too cheap". I do wonder what the Fire tablet lineup will be next year.
I bought the 7" recently and still consider it a pretty good bargain (I paid 40 Euros).
You could argue that the 8" it better value for money (I don't really know, but maybe) but for me the 7" form-factor is just perfect for a "everyday carry device".
The market for 7" tablet is not so big, you could get a Lenovo for about 80 Euro or a Samsung for about 120, that's about it if you want to avoid chinese no-names.
So it is by far the cheapest option and debloated and equipped with Google Playstore it is quite a nice device and I expect Amazon to drop the 7" line, so get it while you can...

A gently used HDX is a far better device for similar coin. Far superior hardware and capable of running a dozen+ custom ROMs ranging from KitKat to Nougat (soon Oreo). I do enjoy my rooted 5th gen Fire for media streaming playback.
