"Blinking" charging using non-offitial charger - Moto G5S Plus Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I just bought two Moto G5s plus phones: (supposedly) identical, with just different colours.
Both of them charge properly using most of my chargers (including the ones coming together with the phone, and other older ones). But using one specific old HTC charger, one of the g5s+ does not charge, and enters into a "blinking" charging state: it does not charge, but continuously shows a connection/disconnection of the charging. I can upload a video if requested.
If both phones did the same weird thing with that specific charger, I would be at ease... But the fact that only one does it, seems to show that it is not working properly... I already restarted the phone several times, and the effect also happens when turned off.
Do you know if the problem can be solved? Could it be associated to a wrong model/mother board? Or is it normal to see such features between phones?
Thank you for your help!

Very simple to fix - don't use that charger

It just draws more current then the charger can provide and overloads it. Usually this is due to a badly engineered charger. Just don't use it as it can get down on your battery. Those batteries are like princesses that should be taken care of with great consideration. Drawing more current could be due to a some app that wants more power or it could be just a miscommunication between the battery, phone and the charger. As you know everything is "smart" this days... from the battery itself to the charger.

Thank you both for the fast answers!

I see. So the difference may not be related to a difference between the "hardware quality" of both phones, but to the actual current that was required by that phone at that specific time.
Seems to make sense. I will stop using that charger then. Thanks!

I had this on my Xperia M4 when using an old Nexus 7 charger. I think it was caused by the usb power supply going bad

Defective charger?

I bought a dock and wall charger from Amazon a few weeks ago for my Nexus S. The dock works fine, but when I plug my phone into the wall charger it makes the touchscreen do very odd things. It starts to get very laggy, and it also seems to misjudge where I touch or tap by a great distance. When I unplug my phone from this charger it works correctly again. This problem doesn't happen with the charger that came with the phone itself. Any idea why this could be happening?
The charger you bought is likely not sufficiently isolated from mains. Some part of the mains frequency might leak through and confuse the touch sensor.
Mind, I am not saying that it is not safe to use.
Sorry to come into your thread to ask a question.
But I have a question about charger too.
At home, I use the original charger that came with Nexus S. My battery seems to last very long.
At dorm, I use the so called Samsung charger I bought from eBay [it says it's legit and it sure looks like one] but battery doesn't seem to last as long as I would expect.
Settings and usage/variables are not exactly same but - for example, I got 22 hours with 40% left with home setting, while I would have to charge my phone usually after 6-8 hours at dorm.

Try swapping the chargers to test. But I honestly think it is not the charger's fault, if your battery is full both times. More likely there are other circumstances, like bad reception, or your phone is searching for wlan all the time or whatever. Try going to the battery monitor in settings somewhere, there you can see what it using power. I can't direct you there exactly because I have a non-english language running.

As I said, your charger very likely is just as safe as all the other Chinese electronic stuff. It is just not filtered/stabilized enough and so it confuses the touch screen. Keep in mind that the touch screen works by sensing a very small capacity change. Some overlaid interference can probably easily disturb it.

[SOLVED] Phone Stops Charging Randomly. Solution?

I noticed this as of yesterday. My Nexus One is plugged in to the wall charger right now, but it randomly stops charging. The light at the top disappears and the phone shows that it is not charging. Give it a few seconds, and it starts charging again. Sometimes it will charge for 30 minutes without a problem, other times it starts and stops every few minutes. I've tried messing with the cable, but it doesn't affect whether or not it charges. I plan on switching batteries with my brother to see if that has a change. I'll also try a different cable soon. I've already rebooted the device, no change. If you go to the battery usage chart, it shows huge gaps in the green charging area..
Rooted, running geo411m stock rom, Android 2.3.3, stock kernel, stock HBOOT.
Any ideas? I hope the charging circuitry isn't failing. Took like 5 hours to charge, now the phone is at 95% battery.
I would try to wipe the battery stats from recovery see if that makes any difference then maybe try full wipe 1 to 5 times and maybe a clean install or even just change ROMs and check if it's the same.
alright I'll give those a try. I just don't know what could have caused it to happen. been on this rom for months, no change in setup. just randomly started. seems like a software issue to me (hopefully not hardware). even right now as I'm using it, it's plugged in but not charging.. 81%, no charge light.

Your charger or cable are most likely the culprit. When the charger doesn't provide enough current - the phone stops charging, and sometimes chargers fail.

It was the charger! My brother has an official HTC one he bought off eBay (looks like this), whereas I have the one that came with the N1. His charged my phone fine. My charger was still screwing up with his phone. I'm just going to buy the HTC one now. Thanks for you suggestion!

Call HTC, even if you're out of warranty. They have been exceptional in providing replacements for broken accessories. I had somehow cracked the lens in the battery door, and when I called to ask where I can buy a new back cover they simply asked for my address and told me I could expect one the next day. Worst thing that could happen is they say "no".
I was searching an answer but found myself. The issue is something happen to system because of unstable voltage then keeps turning off charging.
I've added agni control kernel and activated ignore unstable charging power and voila!
I know this is an old thread but can you tell me - if you can remember (!) - how did you acticate "ignore unstable charging power"? I have the AGNI kernel for my Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 but no idea where the settings are! I've heard of an app but where it is I don't know.

[Q] Unresponsive Screen Charging

I've been using third party chargers for a few days since my original email charger broke. However whenever I'm using the phone with a third party one the touchscreen is a bit less sensitive and responsive. However, I as soon as I take it out it behaves as normal. I wonder if this happens to anyone else? And also can it cause long lasting damage to the phone?
I too have the same problem.. its not that quite responsive when its charging.. Im using by the way the latest stock LC2.
I think this is inherent irregardless if your using the stock charger or any 3rd party charger for that matter. This issue is not on the chargers actually but on the 'laggyness' on the Note's screen when your using it (while it's charging).

+1 Also observed this when charging from a friend's HTC charger, also read a thread about this a while ago, although there was no definitive answer from what I read, just people reporting the issue...
Sorry mate, no solution from me, but you can be sure you're not the only one experiencing this issue.
I'd imagine it has something to do with the fact that the charger may not be able to supply the power that the larger Note battery needs...
LE: No, charging with its original charger or my S2 charger, or even my Galaxy Ace's charger does not make it less responsive. HTC charger...does
Used to have same problem with iphone too. Cheap Chinese chargers have same effect.

I think from a simple deduction, when your charging, your actually charging the phone's screen itself. Now this maybe wrong but I've read somewhere that what's mainly holding the power on all touchscreen phone is the actual screen itself.
So if your charging the phone, your actually charging the screen and if your using the phone(naturally using the screen itself) you are in effect disturbing the charge because the power it needs to fill up to recharge the phone is being use also to discharge it (thru constantly using the phone itself.)
This is an issue with many android devices. And some do it even with the OEM charger. I've personally experienced it on 3-4 of my phones.

This happened on my HTC EVO even with the factory charger.

I think if I'm not mistaken.. this all happens to all touchscreens out there, irregardless on what brand or make/model your using.

Sorry, but this is bull****. Phones have batteries like any other portable device, and this is what is charged.
I am speculating entirely but it is most likely that the voltage coming in from the USB cable is ****ing with however the screen detects your finger (i.e, via capacitive sensing). More speculating but I assume that having some sort of electric field near a capacitive screen will cause issues in detection (I've had the same effect happen with the capacitive buttons near a plasma ball; they caused false detections of the button being pushed). Then again, the phone is full of electronics + radio transmitter so I might be wrong.
Basically, buy a better cable, or it might just be a general fault with this sort of thing.
My HD2's screen used to go crazy when I charged it with a Chinese charger, like random screen touches at warp speed. If I used a well made charger, all was well.
The touch screen did eventually die on the HD2, and I had to send it back for repair under warranty. Now, if I get any jittering/non-responsive screen behaviour, I ditch the charger.
I've experienced this too, but it is not necessarily the charger, but the amount of power delivered by the charger.
I used to live in a rural area and the power supply was bad. We only got about 150V through the wall socket instead of the full 240V.
Using my stock charger on my Galaxy S, the screen was laggy, but if I used the same charger on a good power outlet in town, it was fine.
I've also used cheap no name chargers that are laggy even on a "good" wall socket.

speculation and assumptions are just cousins..
Anyway, you are talking about capacitive sensing and stuffs. Capacitives and resistives only apply to touchscreens and none on qwerty phones. Your 'speculation' about electric fields on capacitive screens are actually correct, but I would like to go back to what I said again, the phone draws power from the screen itself. So when you touch the screen (to perform gestures on it), you are actually drawing out power from the phone. your finger performs a conductance to the screen. Your say of 'false detection of the button being pushed' are actually magnetic fields that is try extrapolate from your fingers (as a magnet) to the screen, thereby causing a marginal errors on the screen's predefine calibration.
That is why you may have notice that whenever you have your phone charge, and your actually using for example to type a message on your phone, you can clearly see a margin of seconds in delay when letters will be registered to your message.
Try to simulate that with the phone charge and when it's not. Clearly you will see what I mean.
this is what the word- ferromagnetism is all about.
anyway, I won't delved with that as it's in the realm of physics already.
cheers

Had this same problem on my Dell Streak5 when using a non stock charger. The fix at that time was to purchase the small longitudinal magnets that are made to surround and clamp onto the usb cable. I had to place two on the end closest to the Streak. Corrected 80-90% of the problem.
I got the magnets at Radio Shack. It's been nearly two years ago, but I think I paid about $6 for a pack of 2.

What? Only 150V? I don't believe it. How then other things work?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Well I was told it was 150V.
It took a lot longer to charge my phone or laptop there than it did at work in town (using the same charger in both locations), so there was definitely a lower current coming through.
Solved irresponsive screen when charging
After eight months trying to find a solution, today I have tried with my iphone 4 charger and my Kindle cable and, for the first time,I am able to write properly, as I weren't plugged. I have to say I don't like this device, it's very slow and the screen goes green almost everyday.
NICE GUY
Well this problem is not because of screen quality. Its all about with the wavelength of current supply and change in frequency . Its create some magnetic field and makes your screen behave weird. When we get proper ellectric supply we don't face such problems. Also cheap chargers don't follow quality levels and they generate uneven frequency thats why flux created by them makes screen behave weird.
This happened to my old HTC Incredible S (Vivo).
It only happened when the 5V charger was lower than 1A.
Quite strange.
But you could check if your charger has at least a 1A output.
Should be on there somewhere.
The stock Samsung chargers are 1A as well I believe.
Cheers,
Daan

[Q] Battery drain while using the phone connected to wall charger

Hi all, I have never experienced this kind of wierd issue with any of my past phones. When i would play games or say watch a movie on phone,( my last one was Htc One X), i would usually connect it to a charger so that the battery keeps charging slowly, and it worked with each of my past and even my gf's galaxy s4. But with XZ, the battery keeps continuously discharging. Anyone got any fix for this? With the kind of weak battery XZ has, it is a highly needed basic feature. I even tried with a 2A S4 charger, but to no effect. I even tried the modding of usb cable by shorting the data wires (the green and the white wire cut and insulated), still no improvement.
I have been using existenz v1.5.5 kk, and i can see that there is an option of fast charge in performance control. But turning it on doesnt make any change. Does the kernel not support fast-charge?Can anyone share any insights? It feels stupid to have to lay the phone down letting it to charge by itself olny to get all discharged within 3 hours.

Charging is really a problem for XZ. Anyways, shorting the data wires won't help, try switch to a stronger cable that's capable of transferring larger amount of electricity when you're using the 2A charger (many of those cables aren't able to transfer enough amount of electricity).
Also, when your phone is really fully loaded and became very hot, just as when you use it for navigation in your car under the sun, the charging speed will decrease (I don't even know why). The charging speed decreases either when you're touching the screen or when it's hot.
Anyways, try better cables first and see if it helps. The docking system is also likely to charge faster.

I used a whole bunch of cables. The HTC one actually works as an anti-charge cable lol, it eats up battery even when the phone is left on charge unused. I had high hopes with the S4 cable, which turned out to perform same as the stock Sony one. Guess I have to live like this..

Sorry to hear that the cables you tried all failed. Did you try using the docking system? They should perform better though.
I mentioned switching cables because I had a "anti-charge" cable before, lol. I did some research afterwards and finally got some 22AWG cables and they really made a difference. It's said that they're capable of transferring 3A electricity and it's really different from all other cables I've used. They're just about $2 each because they're handmade, I can give you one if you wanna have a try.
Also, charging by AC power should be better than using the power of cars' lighter. I'm using my docking system with the SONY stock charger w/ ac power. Never disappointed me.

Dude you might not be able to give me even if you wanted to.. I am in india and the shipment cost will be excessive. Thanks a lot btw.
I flashed Carbon KK rom and the charging is comparatively better. Atleast it doesnt drain while i use the phone for browsing etc, connected to a wall charger. But if I play games or watch videos on speaker, it does to some extent. I bought one more charger, a Nokia made 750 maH charger (AC 20N) which again is wierdly same in performance compared to both the 1.5A Sony and 2A Samsung. What I think is as you said, the wire makes all the difference. A 2A non detachable is the need of the moment for XZ it seems..

From my experience usually Google Play Services is the culprit for hot phones and battery drain. What I did when on stock 4.4.2 was i uninstalled updates for the services and my battery life improved by a lot. Although it does come with the downside that some apps like youtube won't work with the older version (easy work-around by using chrome to go to youtube instead =P)
Since I own that phone, I've been facing the same problem of slow charging speed (actually discharging when using some applications)
The more problematic case in when I'm using the phone in car when driving even if I'm using a powerful car charger (Anker).
In the past I also have tested number of diffferent charger and cables (including original Sony car charger) without seeing *any* improvement.
Recently I've decided to took time to make a comparison test with a colleague Nexus 5. We have connected it in my car to the same charger and used in the exact same configuration (Waze navigation app running) for a one hour drive on the same work->home daily path where I use usually my Xperia.
The measured results have shown for the Nexus a 30%/hour increase of battery level opposed to the Xperia 10%/hour decrease I'm facing every other day.
Later, using "Android tuner" application battery monitoring tools, I've been able to measure that, even when using a 2.2 Amp capable charger, the Xperia isn't able to "suck" more that 700/800mAmp input current most of the time.
To go further I've asked in the french forum where I've posted those figures if any people had been successful to have the Xperia battery level increasing in the same configuration. I have got only answers of other people acknowledging having the same problem as myself.
Then I've also asked people in the "accessories" section of a car owners (Toyota) vehicle forum: found people having the same issue are also owning Sony models.
Also asked another colleague who who owns a Xperia model Z1: ditto.
I definitively start to think that there is a defect is a in the battery charging regulation system of the whole Xperia range.
BTW: I will be very interested if anyone using an Xperia Z in car with navigation application running without those issues could post details about his charger brand and model, and how much battery percent/hour increase he his actually getting with that setup.
Sorry for the long message and thanks for your attention

Battery Issues ( red blinking notification light)/ Take a look

I really do not know where to begin or even explain the issue I am currently facing. I do know that it is extremely irritating and completely destroys any faith I have in future OnePlus products. I have been with Android since the beginning and never had I have an issue with any phone. Here's the issue: currently I am using stock 4.1.6 rom, but earlier (as in the last 5 hours) I was using the latest update (OB11). At first I figured the issue was related to the latest firmware, so I switched between roms then quickly realized it couldn't be a rom, so I continued to try different firmwares: OB8, OB9, OB10, OB4.1.6, and OB11. The issue I am having is very hard to detail unless you are actually looking at the phone itself, but I keep getting a blinking red notification light when the phone is plugged into the stock power supply unit (aka - receptable dash charging block). I have tried using a car charger with the same results, but less frequent. I believe the issue may actually be the block itself. However, I have tried plugging up directly to a laptop and still get weird results. The phone will connect to the laptop, but will not charge or sometimes you'll see the lighting bolt, but the phone itself will not go into a charging mood. Now i have read that the batteries supplied with the phone are somewhat crappy. Im asking to see if anyone out there has had issues when trying to charge their phone. I have also noticed that the phone no longer says fast charging or dash charging. I honestly can not remember what it says. It doesn't seem to charge quick at all. It makes no sense to me. I'm pretty sure it's not a software issue as I have literally tried every current rom available.
Could it be damage to the USB connector on the phone? Sounds as if the data + and/or - cable doesn't connect which makes it impossible for the phone to check wither the charger is a dash charger or not causing the red blinking, I dunno but maybe. I suppose you've tried also with another cable as you did try another charger.
It was the charging block. My dog had pissed on the damn charger, which shorted out the circuitry. Right now I'm using an iPhone charging block with original USB-C cord. There is no dash charging, but I don't have any other issues with blinking red light.
