Trying to decide whether or not to get a N6? Help plz!

Going to b on at&t.. So im lookin for a phone that has the ability to be rooted and/or unlocked bootloader. So far the N6 is the only phone that fits the bill. Ny1 kno what other phone can gain unlocked bootloader or root? I'd really like the Note 4 (multiwindow, IR blaster, fingerprint,Sd card, removable bat, etc) but its so locked down. Also what is screen on-time like for N6 stock or custom rom?

I'm o ATT running stock. I get about 4hours of screen on time and I charge once a day in the AM before work. As far as being easy to root and unlock boot loader. I don't know of another phone that is easier except for another nexus device.
if money is no issue get the note 4 as i assume its more xpensive then the nex6? im poor but i got my nexus 6 for only 570cdn

What phone would you trade your Galaxy S5 for?

I'm getting bored with my Galaxy S5 considering the lack of development/locked bootloader. Plus I'm realizing I need more storage space.
I've never ventured outside of the Samsung Galaxy line and there's obviously a huge assortment of android phones available for AT&T. What would you guys recommend for replacing our Galaxy S5? Preferably something with an unlocked bootloader. Do any of them from AT&T come unlocked anymore?

You can always get a tmobile gs5 and put the att chip in because tmobile has unlocked bootloaders but if you want something new try oneplus one its 300 unlocked and probably one of the most custimizable phones. Or of you dont want to spend too much order a nexus form tmobile and put the att chip.

I would wait and see what the oneplus2 ends up being. By all the hype and leaked specs it will be a beast. I probably won't buy until the invite system ends again but it is tempting.
Xperia Z3+.
-64-bit octo-core Snapdragon
-3GB RAM
-Expandable Micro SD
-Waterproof without needing flaps
-4K video recording
-Aluminum surround with tempered glass front and back
-Battery may be permanent but come wireless charging ready
-Plugs into PS4 controller allowing you to play anywhere on your WiFi network
All-in-all. I think The Xperia Z3+ has the best hardware specs of any smartphone out now. But dev support on the other had is likely to be nonexistent sadly. Which could be a deal-breaker for me
Any phone that isn't bootloader locked down so tight. Or at least an option to unlock it (e.g. HTC)

I will be honest with you. While my Note 4 worked without issues, it was the best phone I ever had and I would not even think to upgrade it. However, about two months after my warranty expired, I received an update (I rooted my phone a week before to use wifi tether) and it began to glitch really bad. This have been reported in a thread right below this one (ddi: mmc_read failed....) check it out. Some people report the same issue that something is going on with the phone's internals. After recent update (epk2), the glitching stopped a bit and only happen when I run some apps (not very heavy ones, as if RAM fails or emmc). Not me nor anyone in that thread was able to clearly identify what is the problem. Could be anything from bad emmc chip to anything in the hardware. Could be just OS getting messed up. So if you buy it, be cautious when you going to mod it.
I ordered a new motherboard and hopefully this phone will last me another year or two. Really loved it!
I was going to root it right after buying it but now i'm curious. Is there any way to check if device has that issue or not?

I don't even know. It happened to others on different occasions. Some reported it as early as August and they had a different version of bootloader and OS from mine. Could be that some of the phones have bad emmc chip (like old MyTouch 4G - HTC had two different vendors for chips. While one was good, the other was failing over time). Maybe if everyone in that thread checked and posted their versions of hardware - we could get somewhere...
By the way, other Note 4 versions also experience this issue.

Go for it, if the condition of the phone is up to your liking. Im on SmoresV1 6.0.1 rooted with the beastmode kernel and the phone is running great. No issues or problems with it.
Once I upgraded my Note4 to Android 5, and later 6 the phone experienced severe overheating issues. It finally died, and then two weeks ago I received a new replacement note4 with 5.0.1, it just bricked today.
Do not get a Note4 unless it is running 4.4.4, and do not upgrade.

Thats not true bro i am running 6.0.1 from 9months without any issues and before that 5.1.1. I had some battery issues but since i got new battery everything is fine now.
Probably something wrong with your device motherboard.
Kitkat is outdated now and many games doesn't work.
No it is true that many users are having problems with upgrades. I didn't say you had a problem. I had the same problem with a BRAND NEW Note4 in 2 weeks of use.
I am going to be the odd one out and NOT recommend that you buy this phone if you want the most reliable custom ROM experience.
The hardware is all there, it's all great. It's got that tablet pen (if you use it, it's a pretty good Wacom-enabled one.) The problem is the software support. None of the bigger, official ROMs like LineageOS, AOSP, AICP, CopperheadOS etc... officially support it. The firmware is very tricky and difficult to get working, I'd assume. And I don't trust any of the developers here in terms of how long they will support their ROMs. Anyone, anytime could just decide that they don't want to support their ROM anymore, then all those contributions will usually either go to waste, or hopefully become forked. Regardless, after the discontinuation of Cyanogenmod and the huge disappointment I've felt over the past few months with no big developments on the Note 4 on LineageOS, I can't really say that the Note 4 is a good choice for software developer support.
Do the right thing, and get a smartphone supported by the major custom ROMs (LineageOS, AOSP, AICP, CopperheadOS). Unfortunately, any ROMs that have a foothold and a Website, usually set the groundwork for other ROMs, and the stage of what phones should be supported. The Galaxy Note 4 is on none of those lists, and this is a very sad, sad thing, but it's just the reality of it. The vast amount of proprietary firmware used on this phone is hard to support and it leads to difficulties and reliability issues. There's also so many variants of Samsung Note phones to support (like 10 or more) it just becomes ridiculous to support everyone's Note build variants. It's silly, to have to support so many variants of nearly the same hardware, isn't it?
Leave it up to Samsung to ruin such a great hardware concept by their corporate BS and leadership. The only Android phones people should be buying now are ones officially supported from Google, and popular custom ROMs. Don't depend on just any XDA developer to keep your ROM of choice supported for 8+ years. Just don't do it...
Guys I have already got note 4 and been using it for past 2 weeks. And for the custom rom support,I don't like aosp roms,so that's not a problem.I use stock roms only(or custom rom based on stock).

Root on snapdragon

Am I understanding correct that as of yet, the snapdragon version of the note 8 cannot be rooted?
Also, if I am planning on rooting, should I NOT take the current ota update?

There may eventually be an engineer-kernel related root maybe 6 months down the road, but it will be super limited and slow.
Also, OTA won't affect root, since an engineer kernel can be flashed over anything (since its for developers to test hardware).
I have the Snapdragon variant as well here in Canada, and I'm selling the phone for full value and will be ordering the F model on Swiftronics when its available (as of now only the FD is up). I'm currently selling it on Kijiji, but if I don't sell it in 5 days, I'm going to drive to Mississuaga to refund it at the Samsung store, and then I'll pop by the Swiftronic retail store which is also conveniently in Mississuaga as well.
Lastly, as you are most likely aware, rooting any Samsung phone will void full warranty 99% of the time, and is NOT covered by any imported variant (anything outside your country regardless of the method of purchase). This includes Swiftronics retail outlet (just got off the phone with them).
So if you really want to keep your warranty, I would suggest waiting for the Snapdragon root, which will most likely keep the warranty and risk having to wait up to a year and have super limited abilities, or sell the phone, get the F variant and lose warranty completely and obtain 100% root access with full kernel/ROM support. I'm personally choosing this option, as I thought I could live without root, but the small things add up and make it impossible for me to live without lol.
Not so worried about warranty but will this phone never get a full and proper root like every other android phone I've owned?

You may want to track the history of rooting previous Samsung phones. The short answer is that an unlocked bootloader has been very difficult to achieve on Snapdragon SOCs. Without that, root is a hit or miss.
What are you trying to do that your stock phone can't?

Take a look at this thread for S8+, root took almost 5 1/2 months and it still has a locked bootloader.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...root-g955u-g955u1-snapdragon-sampwnd-t3658911
I didn't get a chance to mess root on the s8 but using the ENG kernel on the s7 edge to get root was horrible. wasn't really worth the trade off IMO. it slowed down the phone, lagged like crazy. even after messing with kernel settings to make it stable it still was slower then stock. I know how important root is to some people but anymore stock with some ADB mods is OK with me. I wish I had root to debloat my phone some on the stock TMO firmware(unlocked firmware loses to many features) but it is what it is for now.

I always liked finding a custom Rom that has cool icons and battery mods and choosing setting options that my room doesn't have. I just like full customization.
My friends worship me better when i have root, since we all have the same phone, and they see what i can do after root, i charge $50 for root and $75 to install rom, $150 w/root/rom/complete debloatation!
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Every phone that I have owned that had a locked bootloader has gotten root. Every one of them. Now you might not be able to flash kernels. But I never do that anyway. So don't worry about it the Snapdragon will get root. Remember the phone just came out on the 15th. I guarantee someone is working on root as we speak.

I did too in the past but not on the S8+ or the Note 8. There is now Substratum for Samsung without root and SytemUI Tuner from the Play Store that you only need several adb commands to give it permissions where you can really make it yours. Also a thread on the S8+ site for layers and most of those work on the Note 8 too.

Right now I'm using Swift Dark for the S8, and I'm using the nav bar from here, Parapaer. Using the carrier hider from here. Got rid of the battery charging icon from here, with several adb commands for permissions. Haven't had a single issue but if you do just boot into safe mode and uninstall the offending layer.

Honestly I was looking at this question and it made me think because I've also rooted every single phone I've had for the past seven years this is the first Samsung device I bought I usually stuck to Motorola and the Nexus lineup and all of those phones I rooted them to do everything the Galaxy Note 8 does by default already customisation and performance
Up until yesterday the only real reason I had to root my Note 8 was to disable Bixby but Samsung did the right thing and gave me that already
Now I honestly don't even care about rooting

IMPORTANT :No hope for Galaxy A8+ owners who don't get OEM UNLOCK in DEV OPTIONS..!!!

I had been a month and around 10 days user/owner of the GALAXY A8+ phone, and though I loved the phone and everything in it, I would like to share my SORRY and APOLOGETIC feelings for all the Samsung Galaxy Series owners, that if you open up your phones, enable the DEV OPTIONS, and didn't get the OEM UNLOCK option, trust me, after 40 days of waiting and trying as a former but recent GALAXY A8+ owner, there is 100% guarantee that you will never get it visible, no matter what you do, how much days you keep the device turned ON without rebooting, if your phones are EXYNOS or SNAPDRAGON CPU based variants, what or any kind of ROM you flash. It will never be visible. Because the big ******* SAMMY doesn't want you to open up your device's BL and root it and do whatever you might want to as in case of an ANDROID DEVELOPER.
So I sold my GALAXY A8+ yesterday and I am going for XPERIA XA2 ULTRA, where SONY does respect the free choice of either UNLOCKING or keeping the BL LOCKED. They don't go around dictating what owners of their SMARTPHONES can and cannot do.

I have had 3 different Xperia phones since 2014 until 2016 and I never had any problem rooting them. It took sometime for my first Xperia phone but then it became so easy for me that I would root my next 2 Xperia Phones in just a matter of a single day. Infact SONY officially promotes and welcomes unlocking the BL on their smartphones for the sake of Development community. Unlike this b****y SAMSUNG and LG policy of blocking the BL UNLOCKING and not allowing OEM UNLOCKING by built-in hardware securty functions.
I will never go back to SAMSUNG and LG again.
