Custom ROM stripped of GApps and keeps S-Pen functionality? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I swear I read a thread about this very thing a few months back. Is anyone aware of a de-Googled ROM that keeps all/Most s-pen functions?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

there is no (good) aosp / google rom out there

spen functionalities are only on touchwiz roms. i guess google apps could be stripped easily by the devs. removing or freezing them can easily be done by the end user, alot of apps allows a user to do this. usually it is the samsung stuff that is widely removed by devs.

I don't want to just disable, I want the whole framework gone. I'm currently on Nexus 6P running CopperheadOS, and I want to continue to have my system google free. Losing some bloatware is good too. I get what I need through F-Droid, a side load a few as necessary.
Anyway, I'll keep researching. I'm in no rush to replace my phone. I really like the Note, but I don't want to lose the greatness of the S-Pen...

Have you taken a look at BK Disabler? It allows you to uninstall as well. Stripping the OS will be very difficult unless you went AOSP.

Because I don't do Google, Apple, or Microsoft. I don't trust their policies and congress doesn't care to protect our personal data. They mine a ton of our data and make profit off of it, don't give us an opt out or opt in, and still charge is a premium anyway? No thank you.
You asked and I answered. Also, I don't care hear anyone's opinion otherwise, this is my opinion and you have yours. Let's leave it at that.

I'm fine with AOSP + Samsung whatever to keep the S-Pen. In all honesty, I have little hope for something functional like I want and do not have the skill to create my own ROMs at this point.
I'm also not going to pay the ridiculous amount CopperheadOS is charging for there Pixel devices. So, I'll likely go with a different android phone running AOSP and do the other security work myself... Albeit, slowly.

It was for Nexus 5x & 6P. Starting with Pixel you have to buy the device from them. I don't think they've started on Pixel 2 yet. They tack on like $300 or something.

Not touchy at all. People just love to spout opinions and tell people to wear tinfoil hats under the guise of the anonymous internet when they wouldn't have the guts to do it IRL. It gets old quick. I respect we all have opinions, so keep yours to yourself unless asked for.
Simply put, I just care about my digital data and if anyone is going to make money off of it, it should be me, or I should be given a discount on products for a companies profits on the data said products take from me.
I could get all political, bit this isn't the place. So keep your comments about tinfoil hats to yourself.

All I asked was why. You couldve answered without getting hateful and telling people to keep their opinions to themselves. I just asked a simple question, you made assumptions about me, so you earned the tinfoil hat comment. Don't pick a fight, then get upset when one starts.
Maybe you shoyld loosen up your tinfoil hat a bit. I think its wrapped too tight.

They are an advertising company. That I do not dispute. The premium I speak of is on their devices, not on their free software. And no, not a conspiracy theorist. It is simple fact that they suck up as much data as they can to make profit from said data. A business model I'm not against if I had choice in the matter. I believe that our data should be ours be default, and then we OPT IN to have it taken for their profit. If we opt in, we should get a discount on devices. Hence, why I strip all the data sucking out of my phones and do my own thing. It's a matter of simply opinion. As I noted much earlier, I don't care to hear your thoughts on my opinions. I didn't ask, so if you don't have any answers or help to give, go find another thread to troll.

You could use a non Google email and just never sign in on your device. The apps would be there but they wouldn't do much. As long as Google services never has your email from a fresh setup you could stick to just the Samsung eco system. There is no way to completely strip out the Google framework even if you did remove all their apps. They make android so they kind of got it cornered.

I really like the "cleanliness" (if you will) of an AOSP rom. My partner has a Galaxy S7 Edge, and Samsung's overlay is much better than previous iterations, so that I could handle. She really likes the phone too, and she's hard to please with phones.
However, it just seems that what I'm finding is that the NOTE 8 is probably not the phone that will meet my desires. I really like the design and functionality of the S-Pen, but it isn't essential. Time will tell. I'm not in a particular rush, so the search continues.

Yeah I know what you mean about aosp. That would be cool to have the best of the Samsung experience and aosp combined. I have found myself preferring Samsung apps over their Google counterparts.

Android. The theif.

Doesn't anyone find it odd that we are paying out huge sums of cash for a Linux based OS that is free to use?
Because the cost of the handset doesn't factor into it at all :face palms:
I mean they handed us a broken toy and we fixed it for them with no pay and they sold it back to us as an update, now we are fixing it up more. Hopefully when Android 114.6 rolls out some devs. will for a union of some kind and make some cash from big business instead of settling for the 2.99 that their brothers and sisters are downloading.
Next time put the bong down and think before posting.
Here's your basic argument in another context:
The internet is free so why do we spend so much money on computers to browse web pages?
You fail. Thanks for playing.

But who is it that decides the devs have been screwed. Is it you? I think that honor goes to each individual who bought the phone. You don't get to determine that someone else has been screwed just because your panties are in a bunch over something related to your phone.
The cost of a non open source operating system on a phone is going to be so heavily subsidized, I'd be surprised if the additional cost was more than a couple of dollars/pounds/whatever. Bottom line is that you're just paying for the device whichever route you take.
Also consider how long android has been out, it is definitely the quickest maturing mobile platform around. Anyone remember the state wm was in at this age?
Edit: I think the developers would rather be "screwed" as you put it in order to bring about progress in a timely manner. That's what open source is all about!

First off, that's a toaster I want.
Second off, you're absolutely right. It's not about the money, it's about taking your phone to the next level and being able to say you were the one who got it there first. I and thousands of others have nothing but respect for these developers and a lot of us give them both props and donations for their work. I'm sure the donations are nice, but I doubt there are many devs on XDA who started writing ROMs and compiling kernels because they thought it would make them rich.
Don't understate the motivational power of random people coming into your thread to say "Your work is awesome, keep it up, and how cool would it be if it did this too?" For some people the respect is all they need, since genuine respect can't be bought, it can only be earned.

+ for this option. I am waiting on sideline until this issue is resolved. I am happy to keep my aria running latest cm7 nightly.
In spirit, AT&T lost me many years ago. The only reason why I'm still with them is because of my corporate policy and them not allowing me to switch to Verizon.
Believe me, if I could, I would in a heartbeat.
I will continue with AT&T.
Have you called their tech support lately? They fixed my tethering, visual cm and sms provisioning and called back the next day to ensure it was fixed.
CIQ doesn't bother me. This is a work phone. Work already has the right to monitor me. They purchased the phone and pay for the plan.
In general, I am a doer and not a whiner. If it works for me and helps me get things done and doesn't harm me, great!

You've got to be kidding me. You're calling us whiners and not doers? Have you even been following this forum at all? Of course we have called tech support!
And this all makes sense now. The reasons you're defending them. "CIQ doesn't bother me." "It works for me and doesn't harm me" You're just selfish. Do you realize how many people are affected by CIQ? Chances are someone you know or even a family member is affected. Your "you agreed to terms" argument doesn't apply here like you tried to use in another thread. CIQ is doing things without our consent or permission! This isn't about just what affects "ME". This is about all of us and how we're being affected. Everyone has a different lifestyle and most of us don't have "work Vivids".
You don't want to participate in what we're trying to do, then don't. Want to stay with AT&T? Cool. But what's the point of trolling here? As long as we know now that you've been exposed as a selfish troll, No one really cares what you have to say.

Let me know how you have been affected by CIQ. Has something changed in your life. I am guessing not because you didn't know until someone pointed it out.
By "doing" and not whining I mean TRULY make a difference. Instead of flooding corporate sites with noise, help with investigation. Make a case. How does it affect you? What did you agree to? Have you done due diligence and reread your contract?

We helped raise awareness. That's most certainly doing something. I would love to do whatever I could. How is this occupying anything? No one is camping outside AT&T offices trying to protest.
And that's the issue. We HAD to be told that we were being monitored. So before it causes any real damage, it needs to be stopped. Just think if someone figured out that the PSN had an exploit before the the attack went down. We have the opportunity to do things we couldn't in other situations.
Until they kick me off my unlimited plan I will stay loyal. This whole Vivid situation was perfect timing in my mind. Was able to get the phone for $25 no contract so I kept it a few weeks waiting out the locked bootloader issue. Seeing that it may take awhile I sold the Vivid for $300 and bought a Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ and couldn't be happier.
Everyone, step back. OP, don't ask for opinions then complain you don't like some of those opinions. WillGill, that's pretty rude calling folks trying to do something "whiners". Which is what you did.
I believe it's important for people to shout it out when Big Brother starts to over reach. I appreciate the efforts of many here to expose and Kill CarrierIQ.
We live in a society that is becoming increasingly corrupt. Congress has made many forms of bribery completely legal, so that they can try and pretend that they're still the good guys. For the first time in history, Congress has been completely bought and paid for by those wishing to bend the system to their own selfish concerns. At the same time, the Internet has made it possible--for the first time in history--for the masses to become fully informed and fight this attack on our society.
The occupy movement is a good example of people coming together to fight terrible changes in our society, and this movement is fueled by information available on the Internet. Unfortunately, Occupy has failed miserably. If they've done anything, they've helped those people they're trying to fight. It's really too bad, they could have had a major impact had they targeted those people that actually could change the system--Congress.
We no longer hold politicians accountable for their corruption and the damage they've done to the system. We blindly accept whatever they've got to say, as long as they support a few pet causes we hold dear. Liberals--by and large--support Democrats, regardless of how huge the bribes they take are. Look at Nancy Pelosi: almost universally adored among the liberals and yet crooked beyond belief. Oh, that's right, she's not crooked. Congress has made it legal for her to accept bribes so large that they're unprecedented in history. And don't be smug conservatives, the Republicans are no better. Both sides are laughing all the way to the bank, whilst we cling to a few small issues that we feel differentiates liberals and conservatives.
As you rail against CarrierIQ, please don't forget who's sitting back and doing nothing even though they're vested with the responsibility to defend our privacy and our freedom. It's time we held congress's feet to the fire, regardless if we consider ourselves liberal or conservative. When you vote, look past whether a candidate is liberal or conservative. If they're honest, it will all work itself out. Cry out for candidates who are honest, who will fight CarrierIQ and every such intrusion into our lives. Don't accept corruption.
Nakel, you may have missed my point. All this ranting and raving without fact checking and knowing legal rights is just whining. Instead, I recommend true action.
Occupiers, by definition, are just taking up space. They change nothing other than kill park grass, leave filth, not to mention the rapes, drug deaths and deficating on cop cars. And no... I'm not making that up. Google it. That's the wrong message.

I am with you, willgill, though I have no desire to argue or reason with "grab your pitchforks and torches" mob. I do find it curious however, that this mob's anger is rather selective. They get all worked up over CIQ yet say absolutely nothing about legalized rape that is SMS fees. They worry about a cell phone watching their every step while they are already being watched and tracked, EVERYWHERE. Your ISP already monitors your web traffic. Your bank already monitors your transactions. Your supermarket, gas station, restaurant already watch you like a hawk. Your cable and satellite provides and TV networks already watch you watching TV. Every time you input a pin code in ATM, click on TV remote, write an email - you are being watched and recorded.
So relax and sleep well tonight, my fellow xda'ers. Big Brother is not only watching you; he's also watching over you. If you wish to stick with your fears and superstitions, be my guest, but please do wear a tinfoil hat while you're outside, so I can identify and avoid you.
Intriguing commentary and food for thought.
"IF" CIQ is logging your SMS, would the same people incensed by that also be livid if their cell company couldn't retrieve their texts logs for evidence in a court case?
I've seen several court cases where text message records were admitted as evidence. So people want texts archived if it benefits them but on the other hand NOT recorded?

pissed abbout google play store and samsung appstore and espetially amazon appstore

hy,
im not sure if im doing something wrong but the google appstore is very incoherent, i dont even want to mention the other stores.
i was trying for example, to find resident evil 4 on the samsung store but found streetfighter 4 instead witch i cannot find on the google store nor anywhere.
streetfighter 4 was, by all sources on google first only exclusive for LG devices and then was expanded to some devices in japan, so i shouldnt even see it.
but alright thats the samsung store i dont expect much of that anyway .. but the google store is the same crap basically.
i go on my samsung s4 in the appstore app i press the menu button and select my apps and i got two tabs one says installed the other all.
on the installed tab i should see all apps installed on my device regardless if i got them from the samsung store or any other source i could have also downloaded an apk and installed it manually.
the i open my browser and go to the google app store .. what do i got there? i have on the left a link to my apps now i am supposed to get all my apps listed there ... and also one has that little gear icon witch is there for settings on it there is an option saying MY ORDERS that lists everything i ever purchased from the google appstore.
now the issue is that in the list of my apps on the browser i dont have the same items as on the list that the mobile app store gives me i am missing believe it or not even GOOGLE VOICE SEARCH witch appears on my mobile.
now the most retarded thing about this hole thing is that i got on my device in the all tap listed 2 samsung apps witch are the SAMSUNG HUB and PHOTO EDITOR when i go into details on both i get a message saying this app is not compatible with your device.
i cannot find neither of these apps on the google app store when i use the search embeded in the store app.
if this is really the android system then i take a crap on it. IS IT SO HARD TO MAKE THING COHERENT... I CANNOT IMAGINE ANYTHING SIMPLER IN THE HOLE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT OF AN ANDROID SYSTEM. i dont want to get thrown to by all this trash produced by a bunch of different standards different appstores but as you can see also within each store itselt.
I SO REGREAD BUYING THE S4 ILL NEVER CHANGE FROM APPLE AGAIN.
is it really so that in the process of developing a system like android google or samsung or whoever just says ok ... we developed all the core stuff we dont care about the UI just get the thing ready for sale
I've never had problems with it. Try re-installing it.
Edit: Judging by your lack of spelling and such, I'm assuming you're from a different country. That also affects what's available in the Play Store.
Complain about Samsung's App Store to Samsung and complain about Amazon's App Store to Amazon.
Writing an essay *****ing about everything isn't going to fix everything.

another thing is that i cannot find google magazines but i can find google books witch is just ridiculous... i want to throw out.
google is in everything they make incoherent and lackish.
i have no idea what is so hard about it but apple seems to be the only electronics company out there that can be trusted trully.
Unfortunately that's not how Google Play works. It's only going to show you what you installed via Google Play because those are they only ones it can determine you legally own. Same goes for the Amazon App store.
Google Play Web has always had issues displaying my apps. I think that's more of a limitation of the Web Developer and/or what they're using.
The issue you're having with the apps not being compatible with your device isn't Google Play's fault but the app developer's fault as they flag what the app is and isn't compatible with.
Funny how you mention Apple does it better but you have to remember there's only one maker of the iPhone so there's no worries about compatibility while there are many makers of Android Phones so compatibility's going to be an issue.

Why are you taking this as an attack? For your information, I don't even own a gaming console. Obviously you're not checking your spelling well enough. Anyway, All those app stores don't tie into each other because they don't share records. I really don't see what the point of this thread was to be honest.
If you're really that dissatisfied quit complaining and go to an iPhone and deal with the issues they have.

Android is about Open Source. Unlike macs proprietary world, android wants you to have the freedom of choice. Unfortunately this means everyone wants to be a choice. There's no reason to try out a million markets. You can usually find what you need in 1. If not, use a search engine, not other markets. Just easier that way.

Lol, sorry, couldn't help myself.
The reason (again) why you might get better sound quality on apple products is because that's 1 company. Android has a ton of different people all trying to be better than the last guy. So they change the way streams sent or how hardware renders or they make a cheap product to make a quick buck. That's a free world, where people are allowed to be cheated, but also where they are allowed to go elsewhere.
Remember, if you own apple...

The best thing to do if you're having trouble is ask. No need to rant or attack companies that aren't reading this.
Just say "hey guys, having trouble finding this for my device which is s4 for this provider. Btw I'm in <country name>, thanks"
This'll help you find what you need.
Also, if you're confused about why markets don't seem synced, ask "how come phone play store shows x apps and web store on pc shows y?"
We're glad to help, but you gotta make the problem clear and not sound like we're telemarketers who called you at dinnertime

It's not that they don't it's that they can't. They released Android as an open source project for anyone to use as they see fit. Besides if they attempted to dictate to companies how they had to build their phones and that they all had to be clones of all the others then no one would make them. It is because they're allowed to make their phones they way they want that Android based phones hold more market share than the iPhone.

THEY PUT A QUALLCOM PROCESSOR IN THE S4 BUT AS THE DID WITH THE OTHER SOFTWARE THEY HAVE I BET THE CORE SOFTWARE ON THE ANDROID IS JUST AS FULL OF UNBELIEVABLE BULL**** MISTAKES AS EVERYWHERE ELSE AND I BET THESE EAT BATTERY LIFE AS WELL.

So you don't want help? Just to complain and promote apple?
Few things:
1. Yes, I am weird, I am OCD, I see things that as you said "no one cares about". I understand how little things can be important. Like how people will value your opinion based on the coherency of your delivery. If me no comprende, then me no nintendo.
2. My understanding of how important the little things are is what prompted me to purchase an android. You think you can't edit system files in apple products? Of course you can. It's not about being able to change the look of my phone. It's about being able to choose to do as I see fit, whether that's change the look, functionality or whatever else occurs to me.
3. By the phrase "apple owns you" what I mean to say is that in purchasing an apple product, you must purchase other apple products which will only be compatible with other apple products. In purchasing their equipment you've lost the freedom of choice. It's all apple. Headphones? Apple. Laptop? Apple. Mp3 player? Apple. Repair shop? Apple. Music player? Apple. Software? Apple.
Android can be used with whatever you prefer. Samsung, sony, htc, etc. The list goes on. This is why I prefer open source. It's about not being stuck in a loop and not being a walking advertisement for products that have been pushed on me rather then those I've selected because I like.
4. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That means that different people find different things beautiful. Look at some of the theme forums. Some are incredible, others are meh. To me. Not to the people that are downloading them and loving it.
This is why you think android is worse? Because it doesn't force itself on you? Have you tried windows? They're also commercial and available to everyone. You want something better, check out aosp. That's Android Open Source Project. There you will find much innovation and improvement. It's not android fighting against itself. It's companies trying to make android their own thing for their own reasons. Customer loyalty to what's familiar, a similar experience with their own brand name products.
You ask if we live on the moon for not getting away from that...
Have you even looked at this forum?
Most of what you will find here is about getting away from what all these companies are pushing on their customers. Why do you think people root? Replace roms? Kernels? All these things so we can get the experience that WE want from our devices. Not what the companies have deemed we should have.
You praise apple as the only serious company out there? Either you are gravely misinformed, blissfully ignorant or you're simply trolling.
Have you seen some of the battery performances on this forum? They're ridiculously awesome!
It's not android adding the bloatware, it's the devices manufacturers. Samsung adds Its app and launcher and whatever it wants to its devices, as does every other company out there. They made it, they can sell it how they want.
Apple's done an incredible job, it's come a long way, but it monopolizes itself. That is the only thing I don't like about apple, and is reason enough for me to never purchase their products.
I wouldn't allow such ideology in any other aspect of my life, why would I in this?
If apple makes you happy, great, grab yourself a variant of iphone and live the happy comfortable life of the conformist. Like a consumer slave, nothing to worry about when the masters choose for you

i gurantee you that aple knows that the policy about their products is takeing them a bit portion of the market BUT they dont see any other way to guarantee you quality.

That's really the question here, I feel; why did you get something besides an apple product in the first place if you are so sold on the apple systems? Clearly there was something about apple you didn't like enough that you ended up getting an android phone instead. You can't argue that apple is the only good choice since after all - you yourself admitted it wasn't by choosing something else in this instance.

That's absolute correct. Feel free to only buy great products in the future, even though you for some strange reason decided to buy something you considered "not great" in this case, and then came to a forum dedicated to changing it to complain about your mistake.
We're very sorry you don't appreciate the phone you bought. The simple solution is to sell it to someone who does and get an iphone instead. iPhones are great products, no doubt, and apparently they are perfect for what you need!
Good luck!

This guy's either a complete moron or a troll and this thread should be locked either way. He obviously isn't here looking for help but to just bash on Android with an "I'm holier then thou" kind of attitude. If you love Apple so much how bout you just stfu and go find someone with an iPhone 5 that wants a S4 and trade with them if you can't exchange it where you bought it for one.
Posted on the GS4 forum too...and got flamed. Just a troll, IMHO!!

Actually, I don't think the OP is a troll - he is a frustrated user venting in the wrong place to the wrong people. The OP is mad because he is used to the "it just works" feeling that Apple provides. I can relate to his feelings.
I carried an iPhone for awhile. A 4S. And although I prefer my Android by far, there are a few things that Apple simply does better than anyone. One of them is quality control. As an example, "drive mode" on my current i537. On my S2 I used this all the time. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. No rhyme or reason except buggy Samsung software. When I got my i537, I figured they *must* have fixed drive mode by now... I was wrong. Two years and two versions later it *still* only works only when it feels like it. Apple *usually* would never ship such shoddy software (yes, I know about the maps fiasco, but that is an exception, not the rule with them). There are many other stupid little Samsung bugs on our phone. It is frustrating to have a device that would be just about perfect if they spent a little more time on quality control. I mean, I found some of these bugs less than an hour after booting up my phone for the first time. Makes me wonder how much testing Samsung actually did with this phone before they started shipping...
That's what I thought at first, but instead of explaining his situation clearly (what he's looking for, what he's seeing) and actually asking for help he increases the animosity in his posts and adopts an "apple rulez you droolz!!!" attitude. That's when I decided he was a troll.
If he'd be clearer than "this sucks! Me no understand! I hate you bye!" Maybe he'd get a little more help. He's obviously never seen beyond what's in front of his nose and instead of trying to understand, he becomes angry. I can understand frustration, but there's no need to attack members, companies or anyone for that matter.
Makes me wonder how much testing Samsung actually did with this phone before they started shipping...

exactly right friend but just think that if you can see already so many flaws on the surface just by booting up just think how many flaws there must be on the core programs, making youre device maybe vulnerable for attacks most of them noone probably notices because all google cares about is making things stable not necessarily right.
i just cant believe that even today only one company can be taken for serious and thats apple, i dont think that there has ever been a situation on any market in the world ever in history of mankind ... in economy that nobody cares to deliver a quality product besides one company but that everybody makes profit.
android is just a big prank that keeps itself on the surface by making false promises talking about functionality where there is basicly not so much functionality as they promise.
but what goes completely out of bounds and i cant understand at all is that this is absolutely no problem to fix.
software economy has obviously taken its own dynamic, going on a thin rope of false statements and cheap production i guess.
i have been in egypt this year for holiday and i would never go there again, but still i meet there people that came there for the 5th time i just couldn't believe my mind anymore ... unbelievable.
same counts for android some people just see the obvious and some just like crappy stuff maybe they like to suffer.. makes them feel better.
Like I said, I know how you feel. I'm a perfectionist myself and don't understand either why Samsung doesn't go just a bit further with their testing to work out some of the obvious bugs and flaws in their software. But what you or I might want is unfortunately irrelevant. Samsung hasn't asked for my opinion thus far, and I'd doubt they will anytime soon. So... We get to chose between Apple's relentless pursuit of perfection inside their strictly controlled "walled garden", or the "Wild West" of the Samsung/Android world. I'll take the later, bugs and all. If you chose to do the same, there are people here who will go far out of their way to help you with any issues that come up and only ask for coherency and politeness in return. Give it a try...

OTA Update Gives more Bloatware

47MB and gave me yellow pages as well as lookout. I already use lookout but WTF ATT? Bloatware was already a problem but you're actually shoving more down my throat?

Yup just got my update before I read this SCREW YOU AT&T
I haven't updated any firmware or security policies. I'm perfectly fine staying as is
The two apps can be disabled, so no biggie to me. There does seems to be at least one bug fix. My recent apps button was a little wonky. It is fixed now.
I hope there isnt something in the update that further prevents root being achieved. If you go to att website there is no way to prevent update either.

AT&T marketing Geniuses....not!
More apps to disable because AT&T must think it's funny to push bloatware OTA and label it as an update. Seriously what are they thinking?
Is there actually some marketing strategist that is so out of touch with the real world as to think that people want this crap?
It boggles the mind really that senior leadership and marketing does not troll XDA for ideas that would actually help them succeed in product management.
The 1st carrier to the gate with a device that comes with nothing but vanilla android, is not boot locked, or in any other way hindered for root would (I predict) gain a 10% market share inside of 30 days. Business 101....cater to the majority ESPECIALLY when no one else is. fu***** idiots!!! Do they not realize that we all may enjoy different apps, but that is what the app marketplace is for? Some my even want At&t's apps ( lol ) but they need to put them on the play store and let people choose. You know...democracy and all that. Maybe they think that their apps give them a leg up on their competition? Really? Seriously? An app is going to make the difference of someone choosing AT&T S5 over Verizon S5? OMG please tell me they are not stupid. (I'm long winded and redundant due to hoping De La Vega is reading this btw) Evidently they need things spelled out. I certainly hope he realizes that most normal people make carrier decisions based on price of service, coverage, speed of 4G, etc. You know; that business 101 thing again. Hey Mr. Vega; how many people do you have writing code for AT&T apps? What are you spending on that? What are you paying that marketing jack ass that told you to hire people to write code for AT&T specific apps and bloatware? I hope you get where I'm going here. My God man, take a breath, sit back, clear your mind of all the hype and confusion of the bubble your in and look at this thing from the outside. Get back to the basics and provide a product and service that people want. We dont want or need to have to take the lessor of the evils (context of who has less bloat if we want a new device). Dont believe me? Attempt to find 0.1% of your customers that just has to have one of your bundled apps. Let me know how that goes for you. In the mean time the other 99.9% of us will only be getting more frustrated.
At any rate here is some contact info for At&t. I suggest we flood them with emails and try to get directly to "ATTN. Randall L. Stephenson, Ralph De La Vega"

True in the literal sense that "people on XDA". I beg to differ though in that the general majority people would not want things shoved down their throat. All people want choice over the carriers take it or leave it attitude. In addition more and more people are becoming aware of what used to be only "for geeks". My 68 year old father for instance is fully aware of the advantages of having less apps taking up more storage and/or running in the background eating up ram and battery life when he has no need for most of them. The statement "if I wanted them loaded and running I should be able to choose that for myself" or something along those lines is growing among even the "non techies". And lets face it; I would bet that most people on XDA are the defacto come to people in their families for advice on all things electronic. Therefore even a minority can have a large effect on the majority.
BTW, I have no bubble to burst. My age, maturity, and I.Q. puts me well beyond trivial things like that.

As above. Your looking at the small picture. Those wishes and preferences are not only those of XDA.
It's almost laughable that you are saying that a company that eliminates bloatware and possibly gives an opportunity for root would be out of business soon.
A very small example would be the fact that people are flocking to a carrier with substantially less coverage and reliability (T-Mo) because of wifi calling. A feature that AT&T and Verizon eliminated for seemingly no reason. Why? because a handful of people out of 10's of thousands might only use the device for free wifi calls versus buying service from them? How many people are going to buy a high end device averaging 650.00 to do that with? So your telling me that if AT&T released an update tomorrow that allowed easy rooting or at least got rid of bloatware and turned on wifi calling, that people would not flock to AT&T? Big picture...

There are a few out actually. The biggest issue is they are all pay retail upfront. I am specifically speaking to the fact of major carriers increasing their market share / customer base and customer loyalty through standard channels and current business practices and plans offered.
But i'll bite anyway. Lets look at Oppo. A Chinese company started on a shoe string budget and prayer mostly. I don't have the time or the room to fully explain all the numbers, but suffice it to say that if they were in America they would have set or broke dozens of records concerning initial interest, market share versus time in market, profitability, units sold, % increase in sales versus time, net worth versus initial valuation, etc, etc...
And that was for full price units from an unknown Chinese company in a market full of unknown Chinese companies that all have a low initial trust rating. Multiply their numbers X 1000 for a trusted US carrier to do anything similar with a hot trusted device
---------- Post added at 08:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:13 PM ----------
PS
Where do you think the one plus came from. That would be from the former VP of OPPO of course. He saw those numbers for the N1 and the Find and knew you don't have to be a marketing guru to see the obvious. He left a lot of money and an incredible future with Oppo to help bring out the one plus.

Haha wow. Not even sure where to start. For one it's a numbers game, throw the apps out there and maybe %10 will use it, maybe even %1. That's still more people putting money in their pocket than previously. Most of the users don't care about bloatware, if anything they view it as ATT offering them more than they got originally and at most a minor annoyance. So long as it doesn't brick their device they don't care, at most they just won't use it. The idea that "if you want it then find it on the market, and then choose ours over the competition" is just silly, why leave it to chance when you can increase your odds by putting your app on their phone directly in their face? %99.9 of users are frustrated by the addition of more bloatware or are infuriated by having it at all? we all know that's not even close to true, I've never heard a friend complain that the update to their phone added more apps. If you really think any of the higher-ups are reading your rant you're delusional. Go ahead and spam them, and again if you really think that goes directly to their inbox, you're delusional. Sure it will be addressed by someone, but it won't be any of the higher ups your trying to contact. Do you really think they're tech savvy enough to even know what you're talking about? They're put in place because they know how to manage multi-billion dollar companies, not because they know the ins and outs of a cell phone.

"shoved down their throats" is a bit of an exaggeration. They load the app on the phones, it's not like it cripples the device or stops the device from functioning unless you use it. The S5 is still a rockstar even with the bloat. I do concur that most of us here are probably the people that relatives/family go to for phone advice. However guarantee neither of my parents or any relative for that matter would care about a phone having bloatware. They want a phone that will serve a purpose and maybe they can play some games on it.

They are protecting their assets. The more options you have to use a competing service the more money they lose. reduce the ability to use the competitor and you rid yourself of that chance.
That all being said I am not a fan of bloatware, at all. Nor am I agreeing with their tactics. But step into reality. They want to maximize profits and get their users to use their apps so it can be billed to them.
I do have another theory for how much the phones are locked down these days. If anyone has followed the news; they're trying to head off phone thefts, they've spiraled out of control. Easiest way to prevent someone from stealing a phone? make sure that even if it is stolen, it can't be used anywhere because it's locked down like fort knox (pun sort of intended )
Sorry for any feathers i've ruffled.

I'll update if this changes.

If there is anyone who is not a troll in this Pixel 4 forum, is you. You have devoted your last days to this Pixel 4 forum, you opened topics and posted probably more than anyone here.
So yeah, your are probably the user with more love for this phone in the forum.
But you are angry, like you were betrayed by the phone, because it doesn't tick all the boxes you want. And this is completely normal.
However, because of this anger, all your posts are 100% negative. There is not even a single positiveness, 0 balance. This puts your credibility at stake. (This is not normal).
And this is what I meant by not feeding you. It's pointless because you will keep using your time talking negative about the Pixel 4 and that's a waste of time.
Anyway, to put something "on topic" (because 99% of this thread and post are about you, and not the Pixel 4, and nobody enjoys or cares about that).
It seems this issue will be fixed in the future:
https://9to5google.com/2019/10/20/pixel-4-face-unlock-eyes/
This could take 1 month or much more. We don't know, but at least is what we got.
To me (subjective part of the post) this flaw is not critical and knowing that this will be fixed in the future, makes this much less of an issue.
The only person who has access to the phone while I'm sleeping is my lady. But she also knows my PIN so she could unlock the phone without interacting with me.
Let's put another example: If I'm sleeping in a Chalet with people I don't 100% know. I can always enable "Lockdown" before going to sleep.
But if it was critical for me and I need an upgrade urgently, then I'd move on to another phone and that's it.

Blah blah blah blah blah. I didn’t bother reading your whole post.
I’m not angry but if you feel like I am and that makes you feel good then run with it. I’ll keep talking about the pixel and you can keep on talking about me
I keep opening threads about the phone, 2 of them, and I’m getting more attention from you guys then any other threads. I wonder why
This phone would have been decent if it was priced lower than it is. I made my statements and have my point of view. If you don’t like it then you’re the one who’s gonna keep on getting angry. It’s easy, ignore this thread and pretend it doesn’t exist, you’ll be okay. You don’t have to defend this device or tell me to buy another phone if I don’t like this one. I’ve been on xda for years so I’ve seen it all with you sensitive little men. Don’t go to YouTube to read comments about the pixel 4 if this thread pissed you off this much, you might have a heart attack cause it’s bad how ppl are bashing this device. And rightfully so. It is what it is
It’s still a security risk. They shouldn’t ship a phone like this in the first place, it’s supposed to be secure. Also you can’t use it for logging to bank apps and stuff as of yet which sucks. We’ll see how that goes.
The pixel 4xl is cool, the pixel 4 is robbery.

I'm not a proponent of one security measures over the other.
I don't see the security risk any different than a finger print scanner. Someone could just as easily place a sleeping person's finger to the scanner. There's a likely an increase in waking the person up by touching them but not guaranteed. If you've been drinking or partying the person probably wouldn't be woke up.

I don’t know about that. The fingerprint sensor on the galaxy series can be finicky even though it’s secured. Sometimes it requires a couple of tries. And yes you have more chances on waking the person up by trying to get into their phone like that. But that is besides the point. I’m sure if someone tries hard enough they could get into your phone, that doesn’t mean you have to make it easier for them.

For many, I'm sure , the fingerprint scanner or face unlock aren't deemed 'secure' enough and will just continue to use a secure pin.

For many, I'm sure , the fingerprint scanner or face unlock aren't deemed 'secure' enough and will just continue to use a secure pin. Each person has a different security model that fits their security needs. For the vast majority of the smartphone owning population, fingerprint or face unlock technology is secure enough for them.
As you pointed out in a previous post : "I’m sure if someone tries hard enough they could get into your phone, that doesn’t mean you have to make it easier for them."
Fingerprint is a step down from a secure PIN and can be spoofed via various methods. Face unlock is a step down from a secure PIN and can be spoofed via various methods.
When faced with the decision between fingerprint and face unlock it will be a fair trade off from a security standpoint.
If security is of a major priority a strong PIN would be my suggestion.
Two things.
First, if you live in a situation where you fear for the safety of your possessions and/or physical privacy violations to the point that you cannot sleep without worry, you have a greater problem. If you think you have a significant risk of being knocked unconscious for your digital data or you may be killed for access to your phone, you need to examine your lifestyle. If you are that worried you should be using a passcode. Period.
Secondly, commenters on forums and blogs who are hyperbolic in their support or detraction of consumer products make me EXTREMELY suspicious. For almost a decade companies paying for FUD campaigns in the consumer space has been occuring, and gets cheaper and more voluminous everyday.
I urge everyone to use their heads and read about things from proven reviewers. Consider your individual needs and make the decision that's right for YOU. On the internet if someone posts that a product is "terrible", "horrible", "ripoff", "worthless", "trash", or "the worst" just because things like; certain features need improvement, or because the device isn't at a certain price point, be suspicious of the source.
I've been doing tech (professionally and privately) for a loooong time and it's obvious when something else is at play beyond an "opinion" whether it be professional or private.

Bravo, you got me I’m a paid Samsung employee! [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] that’s your “professional “ opinion hahahahahha I swear to God I’m laughing so hard right now.
Well I guess there’s no need for biometric security. I’m in fear of physical violation and I cannot sleep without worry, you sir are better than Sherlock Holmes, you have totally discovered me!
Let’s switch gears, Here’s a good article about the pixel 4 battery life:

Glad you're so happy about... umm whatever.
Obviously you have a problem with anything Pixel related and have a bone to pick. I'll quote myself, "It's obvious when something else is at play..."
Good luck in your search. Don't bother replying you're on my ignore list.
