Project Fi question - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

I have the 5dollar insurance on my phone through Google. I have yet to unlock the bootloader and root the phone yet. How is Google about replacing your phone if something happens to It. If you somehow screw the pooch rooting your phone, what happens then?

[Q] Warranty question

Hey guys, So i bought a Moto x from rogers in Canada 2 weeks ago. I then proceeded to unlock the phone to be able to use it with bell. I got the code from cell unlocker. 4 days ago i noticed specs of dust under the camera glass and on the camera lens, and sometimes the dust will make a little black spot on the pictures i take. Today i contacted motorola and they said i need to send my phone in for repair, but if i send it in for repair they warned me that my phone will be reflashed to rogers software and my phone will not be unlocked anymore. Will i be able to unlock the phone again? with the same code? or will i be out of luck and have a rogers only phone? is this unlocking thing a permanent thing?
if they give you back your phone with the same IMEI number the unlock code should work again.
If they give you a different phone, whether new or refurbished, you will need to purchase a new unlock code. This is most likely to happen.

Hey there,
I sorry if my question sounds a bit stupid, but the unlocking you were talking about is the bootloader unlock? Dont you loose warranty after unlocking your bootloader?
I want to mess with my moto x, but if i unlock my bootloader from motorola´s site, i loose my warranty. If i root my phone, i also loose warranty, but what if i root, install roms, and then got back to stock without messing with my bootloader, can i still send my phone to warranty i any problems arise?
thanks in advanced...
cheers

[Solved] Rogers version ineligible device to unlock bootloader

Hey! Anyone else with a Rogers xt1058 get device not eligible to unlock bootloader on the Motorola site? I've read about these issues... but doesn't seem to be common to rogers versions. I have messaged Motorola support... Which I'm sure will be a slow process. Lol
Wonder if how I got it has anything to do with it? I bought it off a guy who says he won it at work...a cell shop. It was still wrapped in box. I unlocked it to work on Telus and all is fine. Great phone.
Could any part of that story ...buying it from a guy, not in a store...or unlocking it for telus...have to do with the bootloader unlocking issues?
Its never been on the Rogers network either.
I am not too interested in flashing Roms...mostly just want root. And preferably custom recovery...which I need an unlocked boot loader for. No way am I messing with much without a nandroid backup. Lol
I see you can maybe root at least... But I'm no rookie, and the instructions still seem like a handful. I'm more Samsung experienced. So not a wiz with adb.....fastboot and stuff. I've used them a bit on my N7...but not much.
Any insight would be appreciated.

I've had the error with a Rogers phone, the unlock server was having issues at the time and they resolved it the next day. Are you 100% sure it is a Rogers phone? You can verify with the software version.

Assuming that's the rogers version, I am wondering how he got it...prize..or some other way....if it not being on Rogers ever...cause I unlocked it...if that plays into it at all.
I'll definitely try the Motorola site when I'm home tonight again...and keep trying until I hear from Motorola support.
I suppose if it is a US version that can't be boot loader unlocked...I'll have to figure out the root method and live with that.
Thanks!

I did put in Rogers when I carrier unlocked it... If that means anything.

Yep, its a Rogers phone. The sim unlocking portion will have nothing to do with the bootloader unlock. Try again tonight, be sure to remove the spaces in the key when after you've pasted it into the Motorola website. It will have 4 or maybe 5 of them after the cut and paste that need to be removed. When it didn't work for me several other people had posted about it the same day. I also posted on the official Motorola forums and told them the server was broken, someone passed the message to the correct person and the next day it worked fine.
Yeah, I'm sure I read your forum posts there. Lol
I am definitely going to try over and over or until I hear from Motorola. My gut says it's something with my phone... Just cause I haven't read of anyone having an issue right now. Except Mexico or somewhere near there.
Hopefully it was just their site. We'll see.

Yup. Got home from work, tried to unlock bootloader and boom. Done. Their site must have been messed up last night.
Funny story too....got an email back from a lady at Motorola support saying I can unlock my phone for different carriers...on my own....that the Rogers version does not come carrier unlocked. I sent a polite reply saying I didn't ask that....I clearly asked about unlocking the boot loader. It even said that in the email subject line. LOL. Wow.....not gonna count on Motorola support for much in the future.
So...charging phone...then twrp..then titanium backup and I can start tweaking.
Thanks again!

For fun you might want to throw the AT&T or tmobile(retail) 4.4 kitkat on to the phone. Both will work fine.
I plan on flashing whatever I can find for sure. I'll check that out first.
Just seeing what I can mess with first. Did a stock nandroid and after I get everything just right... Another. Then I can play with roms.
The moto xposed module is awesome.
Thanks

Still amazed at this things speed compared to my s2. Just froze a bunch of system apps, greenified, ran adaway and changed some stuff with xposed.... All the same stuff I did with my s2....and all these actions just flew.

Any Downside To Unlocking BL?

I've read concerns about unlocking the bootloader on the 815 variant potentially voiding warranty. I think it was Autoprime but I remember one of the devs in the Simple Root thread saying the T-Mobile BL isn't locked or unlocked once rooted... basically it is open for lack of a better term. Can one interpret that as meaning we have the benefit of an unlocked BL without the warranty concerns? Does that mean we can go back to stock and they'd never knowing the phone was rooted provided the T-Mobile app asking for root was disabled prior to actually rooting? I've searched quite a bit but not seen a definitive answer specifically for the 811h variant. Thanks in advance.

There is no way to lock or unlock the bootloader on the H811. It's a "special" or "odd" bootloader in that it is only ever open. Since it cannot be unlocked, there is no downside to your phone being in its normal state, however odd its normal state might be.
As far as root goes, T-Mobile is using it as an excuse to say "well you shouldn't have rooted" when you're having software issues, so they can tell you to factory reset instead of troubleshooting. If your phone dies or something, they would have to prove that root was the cause in order to deny a warranty claim. Considering how much T-Mobile is enjoying being the favorite carrier in the spotlight, I doubt they would risk a media storm by telling you that you're warranty is void and they won't repair something unless you did something dumb and root access was the cause. It's more of a safety net for them than something they are going to pursue. Either way, freezing/removing the T-Mobile app and denying SU is a great thing to do.
I went ahead and did it. Super easy process. Thanks for the advice!

Pro tip for everyone reading you can just call them and play dumb like you don't know what happened, you just woke up and turned it on like that and they will warranty it no problem, and, In fact there is a very real possibility that if you are on XDA you may e more tech savvy than the person you are talking too.

I've never used an LG phone besides my nexus5, but if the bootloader is unlocked. Then why can't we just flash twrp through adb and then flash superSU?

The T-Mobile bootloader cannot be unlocked, nor can it be locked. It is special. We are able to disable security, but we are not able to unlock the bootloader like the European model. Basically, this is the best it's going to get unless there's a bootloader update that fixes this. If that happens, we would then need to be allowed to unlock the bootloader through LG in order to get fastboot actions.
If you've ever used an HTC device, think of it as S-Off without BL unlock. It's weird, but it works.

android 6.0 cant relock bootloader for rma

hey guys, phone is broken did factory restore with nexus tool kit. and im trying to relock the bootloader. but when the phone restarts he bootloader is still unlocked. any help?
Relocking the bootloader is too much trouble. It might blow the QFuse as well. Then you're really screwed. Moto/Google won't take it back without a lot of fees
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Maybe stop using toolkits, and learn how to use the actual commands... which google DOES document for you...
https://source.android.com/devices/tech/security/verifiedboot/verified-boot.html
Covers the commands for changing the state of the bootloader.
Abuttino? Qfuse?

The Nexus6 does not have a qfuse to blow.
You must be thinking of the newer Nexus6p.

In order to get the phone rmaed from google play, the phone will have to be locked right. Or is this just with carriers.

Google don't care about the bootloader state.
"Fastboot oem lock" used to relock. I heard that with Marshmallow Google changed the magic word "oem" to something like "flash". Haven't tried it.

As long as Google doesn't mind, I'll leave it unlocked thanks guys.

moto g6 nfc and google pay after bootloader unlock and root

Hi all...
I'm tempted to unlock and root my Moto g6 (EU) and just want to check if we can still use NFC and Google pay afterwards. .. this is the first phone with Google pay and find it quite helpful....
Thanks for any comments on your experiences on this.
To my knowledge unlocking the bootloader won't cause any issues. However Google Pay fails to work on a rooted device I believe. Using the options in Magisk(root) you should be able to fool Pay in to not seeing the device is rooted.
