Is there any chance samunsg will ditch always on display fo ambient display? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

AOD is a useless battery drain in comparison to ambient display
I wish they would switch to ambient..
Is there a way to get ambient on stock rom without root?

Doubt it.. maybe you can mimickor do it using tasker?
Have a look here...

AOD is not inherently bad for battery life, not if it is done properly and is on AMOLED.
Any black you see is not causing power to drain and if you haven't done anything silly with AOD wallpapers or anything like that then the battery life that the clock, date and notifications takes up is minimal anyway - an ambient display could actually end up being a bigger drain (again depending on how it is actually set up) as it requires the phone to process something every so often as well as lighting up some of the screen.

I think it would be nice to have both options to choose from, ambient or AOD

I second this as correct and will add that it also has been proven that the displayed images shift pixels as not to cause screen burn

more options are always better but i had a OP5T for a few days and they only thing i truly miss on note 8 is that ambient display and fast and well placed fingerprint scanner on OP5T
ho and its face unlock is also blazingly fast

i stayed with note8 only cus i love the camera and all its features more but OP5T was insanely fast and smooth also battery life were better
i hope Oreo update for note 8 speed things up and improve the battery
i didnt stay with modified clean android because its a bit boring and you need many apps to make up for all the missing samsung quirks and features
but main reason i didnt stay with the OP5T was that it didn't work as well as my note 8 when using the gear s3 and a helmet bt headset together
on note i have them both connected as phone and can switch the audio easily when calling
OP5T got the audio switching option in oreo update but he cant take 2 devices as phone and switch between them when calling

Effect of battery life if I use an app like NoLED 100% of the time?

Ever since I met the LED notification, I've fallen in love with it and I'm sad to see that the Nexus 6 is leaving it out. Since it has an AMOLED screen, I'm thinking what would it be like battery life wise if I left the display on to always show notifications (if there is one)?
well.... with Ambient Display, the screen will pulse on every so often with just enough pixels to show the notifications you have (or at least that's how i'm understanding it'll work).

i think that's how it works as well but most of the time, i'm not near my phone and i just want a quick glance over to see if there are any notifications.
It's hard to say, really. I'm running one of the AOSP Lollipop builds on my Nexus 5 right now... but can't exactly compare that to the Nexus 6, since the N5 doesn't use an AMOLED screen. Every time i see Ambient Display turn on, the entire backlight is on, too.
With that said.... even with an AMOLED screen, i can't imagine leaving the screen on constantly being a good thing for battery life.
Hopefully there's at least a charging led someone can hack to use as regular led. Worked before...

I don't believe it does, at least by default. The Moto X has an LED behind the earpiece, which you can see a picture of here but it isn't a charging light by default. With root you can change that.
If this holds true for the Nexus 6, I don't know. No teardowns of the Nexus 6 yet, or hands on with the device showing this functionality. Even if it doesn't have this light. I am sure there will be a way to use the display to get this info across.

Yeah I was reading this about the Moto x also. Hopefully it kept that design too.

After OTA Proximity Wake toggle missing

When I first customized my OP5 settings under OOS 4.5.0 (before the last two OTAs) there was a "Proximity Wake" toggle under "Settings->Display-Ambient display". The feature allowed you to wave your hand near the OP5 and the display lit up briefly so you could see the lock screen. See "How to Enable Proximity Wake" and the accompanying YouTube demo.
Since the first and second OTA that option has been replaced with an "Lift up display" toggle. I'd much rather the proximity Wake feature or better yet, both.
Does anyone know why that feature was replaced? Did it not work reliably?
It's possible it was using too much battery power.

A reasonable assertion but maybe they should've let the functionality be limited to "while on charger" like other battery sucking features. Thanks for your input.
All the Moto phones have this including the the Moto Z play and it has the longest battery life of just about any phone. This a a great feature and one of the reasons I bought a OP5 . Can't believe they just got rid of it.
Maybe if enough people complain it will be put back in by another Ota. One plus do seem to at least listen to the Dev community. ..

Yeah this was a great feature I had on my Nokia 1020, if it was causing battery drain on the OP5 then put an alert when you toggle it that it will have a direct impact on the battery life. Crisis averted then.
Ambient display in general is sort of weird on this phone. It doesn't exactly do what I thought it would. Maybe the removal of this feature is one of the reasons. But with the notification light so dim (maybe this can be altered with a mod or future ROM, I hope), the live display aspect is sort of needed. Is there a post on the OP forums on this yet? Someone should make one.
This is something I really miss from my old Moto
If you are rooted, there is a workaround to have proximity wake enabled. Instructions are provided in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/guide-how-to-enable-ambient-display-t3690488/page4

3 days in and disappointed

So iam now 3 days in with the S10 plus and i have to say that while theres lots i love about it , iam also disappointed. Here are my complaints thus far..... I pray some of these can and will be fixed with a software update.
1 - Camera, Yes its pretty good but i expected more. No better then the S9 imo. Expected a little more from Samsung with regards the camera this year.
2 - Kepad touch issues..... I virtually cannot type on this phone without constantly and accidentally hitting the 'p' key. I do not have chubby hands or anything but whenever i need to reach across to the left side of the keypad , iam forever hitting that 'p' key and it drives me crazy to the point where i may return the phone.
3 - No notification LED - This wouldnt be a deal breaker if Edge lighting worked properly but Edge lighting is pretty damn poor lets be honest. Works fine for default messaging app but thats about it.
4 - Fingerprint scanner - Was awful initially but improved massively once i removed the pre-installed screen protector and added a second fingerprint using the same finger. However, I still find that it occasionally fails to read my fingerprint. I feel like iam placing my thumb in the right area given that the icon lights up to help me but somehow it still sometimes fails. I would say it works around 80% of the time
5 - Fast Charging - Again i expected more. Its not slow but its not fast either. It takes around 1hr 45 mins to get from 15% - 100%
For me personally i would be happy if they could improve the keypad and fingerprint issue but theres already been updates and not much has changed.
You mention keypad, are you talking about the keyboard? If so just use another keyboard.

Ha When i reach over to the left edge of the display to type, my skin hits the 'p' key. Its absolutely driving me insane ha

You can modify the size of the keyboard for this very reason, move it up or down until you can use it comfortably.
You can also modify the curve display deadzone with goodlock.
I'm also surprised that AOD doesn't fill the void of a notification led.. it certainly does for me.. In saying that I would like to see a notification ring around the camera cutout, I think that would of been a nice touch.
I agree with you on everything you mentioned.
I would add one more thing regarding accidental touches, I am a skinny guy, and so are my hands, but whenever I am reaching to other side of the screen, I find the screen either not responding to my touches or causing accidental touches, what drives me crazy is that I check the palm of my hand and almost always it's not even touching the edge of the screen, it's as if even when your skin is hovering few mm above the edge if the screen the phone will take it as if your actually touching it, if that makes sense.
As for the camera, coming from the Note 9, I am so disappointed with the low light capabilities of this phone, even indoors it's not up to par with other flagships, I even get worse shots than my previous Note 9 and S9. To make matters worse, Samsung didn't include a propper night mode that can compete with Huawei's night mode or the Pixel's night sight.
Sorry for my bad English, I hope I was clear enough in delivering my point. Cheers.

The S10 does have a Multi Colored Notification LED around it's camera cutout. This YouTube video explains how to activate and manage it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/b0p0o6/s10_s10_how_to_enable_led_notification_light/
Try using a light touch on the fingerprint display reader as opposed to a hard press, this is how it's designed to function.
The S10 Camera has a Pro Mode, you can adjust virtual any aspect of photos to your preference.

That notification is from using a 3rd party app and a light touch with the screen protector hasn't worked too well.

I contacted Samsung about the keyboard issue! All they suggest is to leave feedback. If your using the stock keyboard then it can be resized which i guess kinda is a solution but you have to bring it in from both sides to keep it centered and the keyboard then winds up been a tad too small so its not ideal! Its weird because my s9 plus was almost identical in terms of its dimensions yet it did not have this issue.
fingerprint scanner has also been a nightmare today! I could swear iam not doing anything different yet it works sometimes and rejects me other times. Its makin me miss the finger print scanner on the s9. It was so much better. Another small annoyance is how fast my battery goes from 100% to 99% lol
Battery in general is great but i charge it to 100%, Unplug it and seconds later iam at 99% .......... what the fudge ha
I used an iphone xs temporarily recently and i have to say that while it is over priced and in general Samsung is much better and cheaper too. However, Apple does things properly. It worked flawlessly and never gave issue. The Samsung is far better on paper and ticks all the boxes but in day to day use its just not as 'perfect'

Not feeling much love for my P30 Pro yet

Hi, I am a long time Samsung Galaxy user, my last phone was the Galaxy S8+ i have just come to upgrade and thought I’d try the Huawei P30 Pro and seems it uses android as well, i thought it can't be much different. i have 14 days return and I’m really not sure if i am going to keep it or ask can i swap for an S10+
I don't know if i am just being biased because I’ve had Samsung for so long but i just hope someone here can persuade me keeping the P30 won't be too bad and that some of my issues are fixable.
I don't seem to be getting some notifications, mainly games, i seem to get texts but not always others, although if i turn my s8+ on, they still seem to be coming through on there. I have checked most settings i can find but can't see anything obvious, i have added the games to the app assistant.
I didn't know that this Huawei phone didn't have a notification LED, i guess it’s only a small thing but it's amazing how much you miss that flashing light, are there any ways to get any other screen notifications in some way?
The phone doesn't retain the Auto brightness setting when i restart the phone, I’m a bit confused by this as it would seem that Huawei may have this as a feature rather than a bug, I’ve read online that this is how these phones are set but surely you would want the setting to be retained how you leave it? is this a bug or here to stay? i keep turning auto off but every time i restart its back on!
The vibrate is extremely shallow to the point i hardly even feel it.
The optical zoom doesn't function if in 40mp resolution? what’s that all about, i tried it earlier and it says on it that it only works in 10mp resolution? the res you are in shouldn't stop the optics from moving should it? Also when set to 10mp and you can zoom, the zooming isn’t smooth in any way at all, it looks extremely jerky.
even though i have auto brightness off and also smart resolution set to off (which switches between low and high depending on what’s on the screen) - even though these are off i keep seeing my screen kind of flickering when i switch between something like a website to a picture etc, like the phone is still using the smart resolution. if i go to a website the white parts might be bright white for a split second then kind of flicker to a duller white.
I have only had the phone for 2 days but that’s is what is kind of bugging me a bit already if anyone can advise at all on any of them issues?
Thanks
James
About the "zoom", it's not an actual zoom and you are misunderstanding how it works. Having a look at the backside of the phone would explain some to you but i'll give it a go..
You got three lenses which equals three fixed focal lengths. This means you are simply jumping from one camera to the other when you perform a "zoom", which explains the jerkiness. It's expected behavior and is supposed to work like that since there is no gradual zoom with moving lense elements.
Each of these cameras have their own sensor which works at specific megapixels, there is no 40mpix sensor in all these three camera modules on the back of the device. The 5x tele lens has a 8mpix sensor. The ultrawide angle 16mm sensor is 20mpix and the main sensor is 40mpix which normally operates at 10mpix due to pixel binning.
The auto brightness is a long standing bug on Huawei devices, it's annoying and stupid i agree but it's there.

Samsung has gone a step further on improving there software. Its really fluid and very user friendly. Huawei should focus on that aspect on there flagship.

One little thing I miss from my Galaxy S8+ was the coloured app notification icons on the Always On Display.
Was good for seeing where my notifications were from at-a-glance (blue for Messenger, red for YouTube, green for WhatsApp etc.).
Not having any of those problems with mine. In fact I'm ditching my Galaxy S10+ and keeping the P30 Pro. The fingerprint scanner on the Huawei is faster and more reliable than the one on the Samsung, the camera setup is far more versatile, battery life is better and I immediately stick Nova launcher on anyway so I don't have to put up with EMUI or One UI.

1. It's not Samsung
2. I had the S10... this camera is superior in every way except maybe video... (I don't shoot video in 4K for my purposes so it doesn't bother me)
3. Above camera superiority overall, the 5x & 10x zooms brings a whole new world of shooting pictures. I can truly leave a big camera / big lens at home now.
4. More true-tone pictures... people hate to admit this... but the real world is not over-saturated... Apple, Samsung, etc. stop promoting this as the normal for picture taking....
5. Features yet to be turned on but soon in updates... dual video record (maybe), TOF Sensor utilization (next update), etc.
Honestly though, I'm not a complete Samsung hater. I just hate the way Samsung does business... how can they release their "flagship" S10+ then months later add features to the 5G phone they definitely should have been included with the original... like the additional lenses... Am I considering the Samsung S10 5G. Sure I am... Will I maybe wait for the Mate 30 Pro... more than likely. Huawei, for all the talk about what they steal, they also keep trying to innovate... unlike Apple and to some extent Samsung.
At the end of the day, reserve your judgement until you get to use the camera on the phone when you need a zoom... like at a zoo, concert, etc. where you can't be right against the action... take a few pictures then compare to maybe your friends pictures... you'll then realize what the hype is over... :good:

That's the thing; it doesn't just disappear.
I use Nova Launcher too but here are some EMUI annoyances (for me):
Not being able to open the tray from the lock screen
No quick launch shortcut to launch the camera from anywhere (such as double-pressing the power button)
The Phone app taking over any active app (annoying when navigating with Google Maps)

The google maps issue is just a settings tweak with app draw over preferences.
the choices made by Huawei are logical ones... for Instance:
1. Tray not being able to open from lockscreen - this is annoying but the logical Hauwei take on this is that it doesn't allow someone to mess with the phone settings until security is verified... I'll give you the iPhone as an example. I can get into the app drawer from the lockscreen without anything being verified security wise meaning I can harmlessly turn on someone's flashlight if I wanted to as a prank (to let the battery drain faster) all the way up to maliciously turning off all connectivity of the phone... meaning calls, emails, etc. can't get to the phone... can you see the issues this may cause? personally the annoyance is small to my piece of mind that no one can screw with anything on my phone.
2. My theme has quick launch on lockscreen for camera... or press volume down twice so its in there you just can't readily tweak it
I have read online about the setting for app power consumption and to switch manage automatically off so that the phone wont keep alls from receiving notifications and let them run in the background. will have to try it and see.

Thanks
James

Funny enough, I also upgraded from an S8+. There are definitely minor bugs, but nothing deal-breaking for me. As for notifications lagging behind, it's a known Huawei bug. You need to turn off auto-app management for the apps you want to get notifications pushed.

I had every Galaxy S and Note phones that were ever released, every one. Last year, I was interested in the P20 P30, ditched my S9 for my first Huawei phone ever, and I loved every bit of it. Then I skipped on pre-ordering the Note 9, something I have never done before, I waited because I wanted to get the Mate 20 Pro, but that was a bad experience for me and my wife, as we had 6 units replaced in total due to glue gate. After returning it, I went back to Samsung, got the Note 9, and I was then reminded how bad Samsung's cameras have gone when compared to the latest from Huawei, Google, and Apple. Still, I believed that Samsung will definitely deliver with the S10, and the moment it was announced, I pulled the plug and ordered two S10 Plus for myself and my wife. Just 3 weeks were enough for me to get sick of it's subpar low light photography, especially indoors and mainly if you're taking pictures of kids, as Samsung cameras struggle with moving objects. My wife doesn't care that much about cameras, but I do, so I ditched it for the P30 Pro and I couldn't be any happier with it in my pocket.
The camera is much better than the one on the S10, especially if we are talking about the exynos version, which was the case for me. Videos might not be up to Samsung and Apple's standards, but at 1080 it is close, and even better in low light situations and indoors as well. Battery life is much better, the UI while isn't the prettiest, it feels a bit more zippy than the S10, which isn't a slouch either.
Now fixes for your problems.
For notifications, go to battery settings, and select the apps you don't want the phone to put in sleep, you won't be missing your notifications after that.
Notifications led is also missing on the S10, so on both phones you'll have to rely on AOD, which for some reason, doesn't affect your battery life on the P30 Pro as much as it did for me on the S10.
Fps while it was improved after the latest update, and I can confirm that it got significantly better, it's still no match in terms of accuracy and speed to the one on the P30 Pro.
Accidental touches are a nightmare on the S10 Plus, the curve is smaller, but it sits much closer to your palm. An issue that I don't face on the P30 Pro.
From my 6 months experience with the P20 Pro, the camera on the P30 Pro will improve by at least 20%, with every update, Huawei makes sure they keep on improving their image processing. While on Samsung, and I am sure you know that, Samsung only irons out the camera issues that comes with the software that the phone was released with, so after a month or so, forget about Samsung working on improving your pictures.
Pardon me for the long ass essay, but from my experience with Samsung phones, and the S10 in particular, I would advise you to hold on to your phone. Their is a learning curve for their UI, but once you get it, you'll love your phone.
Thanks for the replies, what themes are people using? I have tried the app management setting and it did seem to have fixed my notification issue.

I also use Nova Launcher - Since Galaxy S6 - and haven't looked back!
I'm very surprised (and very pleased) to hear that the finger print scanner on the P30 works faster AND more reliable than the one on S10+ - can you please elaborate more?
I noticed that mine works very well, actually extremely well. Always wondered what the ultrasonic reader must be like if the claim of being more accurate is true!!???

One week with the Galaxy A40

Just a few thoughts on the A40 after one weeks use. Previously had a Oneplus 3t (with broken front).
What I like:
-Super lite, only 140g.
-Small but still decent size screen (5.9inches) due to the 85% screen to body ratio.
-Cheap.
-Very nice Super Amoled display.
-UI (Samsung One UI is a HUGE stepup from Touchwiz).
-Dark mode (systemwide: settings, notifications etc).
-Fastcharge.
-Bluetooth 5 (no long range support, though).
-Sd card slot
-Fast facial recognition to unlock
What I dont like:
-No Led Notification. You can get a vibrate/sound reminder every 3/5/10/15 minutes until you discard the missed call or sms. Miss the led, though. Tried the Nice Lock app (since Good Lock doesn't seem to work). Unfortunately Edge Lighting+ is the only module that doesn't work. I get a "This app is no longer available" message when opening the module.
-Slow android updates. Not the biggest deal for me. I am just happy it has Android 9, with its app-password-autofill.
-Samsung launcher is pretty good. I prefer Nova Launcher, though. That way I can hide the samsung apps I can't disable/uninstall.
-Speed: could be a little snappier, but its surprisingly fast - even though my phone has the Exonos 7904 (not the 7885). Suggestions: turn on "Reduced animations" under advanced settings. And under developer options (has to be turned on) change the three Animation Scale options from 1x to 0.5x.
Thats all I can think of right now. Overall very happy with this phone!
I have that phone for two week.s I point the same aspects that you mentioned.
Overal to 0-10, i give it an 8.
+ I was surprised by Samsung UI. Touchwiz was a complete crap.
+ Screen is amazing
- Short range of bluetooth.
- I use it without a case and sometimes it reacts on the edges.
- I don't know how, sometimes it unlocks in my pocket and starts typing something. It's annoying.
But overall experience is more positive than negative.
hello,
is always on display working?

I´m afraid that this device don´t hace always on display, actually I don´t miss it
Anyone having problem with notifications not being delivered after couple of minutes device left locked? (apps added to memory exceptions, battery optimizations/adaptive turned off, high priority notif set in apps etc, concerns all applications regardless the settings) (I have put more details in separate thread in Troubleshooting forum for A-Series)

hi
for the auto unlock problem, I disabled double tape to wake function and it fixed the problem on my side.
Have you try some app to have always on display or use the display to have a "led notification"?
Hi everyone !!!
A40 is a very cool phone. All is fine, BUT, after the October 1 update, fingerprint unlock takes longer than before and also getting to home screen from e.g. open browser by pressing middle bottom button takes also MUCH longer than before.
Before the patch all was instant.
Do you maybe know how to fix this? I also noticed that battery drain is lower than before by 10%, on the positive side.
I am very happy that A40 got its own forum thread now
Going from my trusty pixel xl2 to this phone was a little bit of a shock the xl2 is certainly snappier but the samsung really surprised me.
I refused Samsung due to my s7 screen replacement fiasco I had
(They replaced it, I paid, it stopped working but with Knox tripped before the original replacement they wouldn't fix the non working replacement)
Apart from the bloat wear most of which I've disabled or uninstalled and the slow updates it's not a bad phone.
I miss aod and lack of support for one officially but using an app that does the job, it's far from perfect but I paid £80 for a genuinely good phone.
Can't wait for a little more uptake of the phone and some ROM makers to show us the potential of this little gem of a phone.
What about the camera?
I find the night photos quality, the worst i had for years!
Hardware:
is very good and the only "small" phone currently available with OLED display, 2 SIM cards + microSD card, FM radio, headphone jack and weight less than 150g. With other adjustments i reduced screen size to something around 5.1 inch only as i use phone with "old" fashioned and comfortable one hand control. Camera i dont care much as i dont use it often. Reception of mobile signal is not very good in areas with weak coverage. It is the only phone in term of hardware which can replace my J3 2016 (latest apps are no longer supported due to CPU). It is pity nobody else makes such "small" phone.
Software:
is simply CRAP. I have opposite experience compared to others. All previous UIs (Touchwiz, Experience) from SAMSUNG were way better (nice looking and practical) than ONE UI. I tried a couple of times to get used to it and spent long time tunning it but i always ended up saying no i dont like it, it did not help much. One UI is ugly and not practical UI. Everything is too big and wasting with space everywhere. Long time ago at the beginning of my "design" at my previous job i did this "Bubble rounded" style like ONE UI but after short time i went to way advanced style. It is like kids/begginer low cost design style. Icons are ugly, which could be changed, but bubble style with big blank spaces everywhere no. Samsung apps looks terrible and these are not intuitive.
One UI is slow and lags (almost factory state with very few apps as i still test it and try to get used to). I have Huawei P10 lite (2017) as well and that is way faster compared to A40 and i find EMUI 8 far superior compared to ONE UI, very intuitive, great features and adjustments available within available menus not like ONE UI where you need to download Nice lock and modules, normal "small" size of everything, no needed to scroll all the time where it is not really needed. Huawei Apps looks way way better and moreover with way better controls and menus.
If anybody can port workable and fast EMUI 8 ROM or EMUI 9 ROM to A40 it would be the great phone, i would even pay for that Please port EMUI 8 ROM to A40.
Such a gr8 phone
This phone is too cool but samsung can work better on cpu

What does animation scale do? Is that the one under 5? Love mine was this or iPhone 7... Do you like full screen or hide notch.
The phone is bad and barely useable. Everything is slow and laggy and I can't believe how poorly this thing performs with how good the hardware is. Good looking screen and a solid build quality that feels good in hand.
Samsung's software is a joke and ruined an otherwise perfectly solid looking phone.
Hi, do you know what max. sound output the A40 phone can provide? I looked all over for the info, but no cigar.
I am planning to buy/use 200 EUR (SONY EX800ST) In Ear Monitors (IEM) which can input max. 500mW.
They are 16 Ohm. Sound pressure sensitivity: 108dB / mW.
The thing with these IEMs is that for HUGE bass they need much power.
