N950N Review - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Since my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 N910C had been starting to develop issues, while I am in Hong Kong. Which was probably due to the latest OS updates. Or it could be due to the fact that my N910C doesn't support the use of LTE-A bands, which HK Cell Providers are starting to adopt. I decided to upgrade to the Note 8. I managed to find the Korean N950N model with 256GB of internal storage for an excellent price. The only catch was that they only had it in Deep Sea Blue and they didn't know when they would get the Midnight Black version back in stock. I bite the bullet and got it. The shop owner was nice enough to give me a slight discount. He also installed a case friendly screen protector that didn't work very well with the Spigen Tough Armor. It is not too much of a problem. Just that the part that protects the sensors pop loose from time to time. I am amaze at how fast the Note 8 running, it can handle anything I throw it's way like it was nothing. The placement of the fingerprint scanner isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The iris scanner is pretty good when I have my Note 8 positioned properly. I was able to transfer everything(except my UK Whatsapp account) from my N910C to my N950N using Smartswitch , which was incredible. The Secure Folder is useful for storing my personal files and apps, I managed to put my UK Whatsapp number in there.
The only downside is that some of the old S Note features are now gone! I can no longer take a picture and have it converted into an editable document like in my N910C. Which was a very useful feature, I guess that Samsung must have removed it.

You can install the old S Note app, search for it

Hello,

With WhatsApp, I periodically back it up to Google account. Then use smartswitch which works good.

Sorry for being unclear, but I meant the price of the note 8 256gb in Korea?

I paid HK$5699 for my N950N, which converts to GB£518. Which is a steal! As the 256gb UK model of the Note 8 cost around £900

Tried it. But even that doesn't have the photo note function. Which is strange as the S Note app on my N910C has been updated to the latest version, and it still has the photo note function.

After installing the Oreo update. I noticed that one of my games Texas Hold'em Poker 3 no longer takes up the full screen when it loads. Even if I have the game set to fit the entire screen. Other than that everything looks the same. Except the Settings Menu has been brought up to the S9S series GUI. There maybe some performance increase but I didn't notice any.

Still rocking my N950N. Even after the release of the N960N. My N950N is still a beast. The camera quality is excellent despite being a single aperture lens.

Just installed the Android Pie update for my N950N. I have noticed that when my device boots up it takes a few seconds longer for the keyboard to appear for me to enter my password. Besides that everythings seems pretty snappy. I am not fond of the One UI. I prefer Samsung UI, which came with Nougat and Oreo. One UI seems way too cartoony. The buttons and icons for all the Samsung apps seem to be designed with kids in mind. I like that you can just use swipe gestures to navigate the device, which eliminates the need for navigation buttons.
I have also discovered that the game launcher doesn't include the stretch to full screen option anymore, which is a shame as that worked fir stretching games to full the display very well. Figured out how to fix this problem in the Settings Menu.

Just discovered that you can no longer disable Bixby once you have installed the Pie update onto the Note 8. :crying::crying:

But you can now remap the button to any app you want.
Now there is a option for a single press and a double press.
Just got the Bixby update.
edit.
Know I have Google search open up when I single press instead of Bixby and if I want Bixby double press.
But holding down the Bixby button will bring up Bixby voice command.
Have you tried a third party app to disable it?

I found out about that. But I want to disable that button completely as I probably won't ever use it. I might try a 3rd party app

Anyone noticed bixby voice password feature is missing? On oreo if the phone is locked, u can use bixby to do something, and unlock phone via voice password. Now it'll just ask u to enter pin or pattern

Go to Bixby voice settings and tap on voice wake up. It's there, look at my previous post with screenshots you can set the option.
If not there update Bixby.
Now the feature does it like Google style with voice unlock. Meaning it just unlocks when you say "Hi Bixby" without asking you for a voice password.

S Voice > Google on Note 4

I've used S Voice and Google for 4 days each and in my opinion S Voice is the clear winner. Here's my top 5:
1) S Voice has very reliable always-on service whereas Google occasionally will glitch and stop responding to the wake up command until I reboot the Note 4.
2) S Voice accepts way more commands.
3) S Voice can perform functions and execute them instead of just bringing you to them. For example if you say "wake me up at 6:30AM" it will set the alarm for you, whereas Google brings up the page and you have to click "set alarm."
4) S Voice has a funny AI. You can say "Will you marry me?" and it will reply with "I would make a terrible spouse" or say "yeah baby" and it will respond with "I'm not your baby." Funny stuff.
5) S Voice has more secure always-on service because it allows you to pick the wake command so you can make your command,"I like pie" and it will work, whereas Google currently only supports "OK Google" which everyone knows from the commercials, and if you want to set it to work even if your phone is locked, you want a wake command that people are less likely to know.
What have your experiences been thus far?
To be honest I haven't given S Voice a try yet. I was surprises than Google Now works because in Poland it had very little support, but now it let me set an alarm and everything, nice. But I can't set Google Now to wake the phone - for some reason the option for it is turned off, maybe S Voice will work like that.
The new pop-up window is nice too, any app will stay open and S-Voice just pops up and closes down. Makes more sense than opening up a whole new page. Quite accurate understanding English as well.
Oh, nice. Does it affect battery?
Nice to know they improved s voice. It used to be inferior to google voice on the note 3. I might give it a try again.

Nope. I had S Voice a and Google Now always listening and had no noticable effect on battery life. I didn't really use'em but it did come handy at one or two occasions. I think it's efficient operation comes down to that extra chip both the SD805 and I think the Exynos variant has.
I love the S-voice and wanna use it all the time but I wish I can pull up the S-voice anytime with voice. I know it's easy double tapping the home button but Google can be pulled up anywhere with voice.

So can s-voice. It's in the settings. You can also turn on voice wake while locked.
For voice to wake. In my experience, it only halfway works to. Maybe it's because I use a custom command...but voice rarely wake it up.

Maybe I'm missing it but the only option I can find is waking it up with voice while locked (voice wake-up option) nothing for when the screen is on, even on the home screen. The only way to pull it up is by double tapping home button.

Huh? Look at that picture I posted. Check that option, then say "hi galaxy" or whatever you set your command to be and it'll wake up. It doesn't work all that well when you use a custom command.

Thanks for posting those photos and instructions! But I already have both enabled even before I came to this post and it still would NOT take voice commands when you have the screen on, as in not on the lockscreen (or as I found out, also when you're using any app) but when you're in the home screen. Both those options are only for use when you're on the lockscreen or when the phone is sleeping. Now that I think about it, maybe it's because of my use of Nova Prime that's hindering the S-Voice to be invoked on the main home screen though...
The thing that i don't like is even though svoice turns on when i say hi galaxy, i still have to push the mic button to say my command. Google voice doesnt so that

You don't need to push the mic button to issue your command. If you ran out of time to say your command, all you have to do is to say your wake up phrase again and it should accept your voice command then.

Thanks! That works great. Love it!!
I use svoice for making calls through by bluetooth headset. It works much much much better than google voice. Google voice is no more than a joke when you have non-english names, whereas svoice still does a great job. Another thing I love with SVoice is that it also utilizes the nicknames in your adress book. So you can use either the full name or the nickname.
This is very interesting. I must admit I completely ignored S-Voice when I bought the Note 4, as it wasn't brilliant on the Note 3. I also had got so used to Google's voice functions which did impress.
I just caught this thread and whoa! Samsung really have made some great changes to S-Voice on the Note 4 and I think I might actually start using it a bit more. So thanks for posting your observations

Things to know
Max recording resolution is not 2160p as said on the internet but max 1080P.
If you unlock the bootloader it will give you a warning when you boot up the phone saying your phone has been unlocked and can`t be trusted, this is normal when you unlocked the bootloader.
Only 1 of the 2 simcards can use 4g at the time, so there is no 4g for both of the simcards at the same time.
Hold power and volume up when starting the phone to get in the E-recovery menu.
There is only one version of this phone, the chinese one.
This version is called the EDI-AL10, and all the languages are provided on the phone.
Some websites who are selling this phone are telling that this phone misses certain languages such as dutch.
This is not true, every language is present so no worries.
Playstore is not included on the phone, you can simply download it from the HiApp which is already pre-installed on the phone.
The fingerprintscanner can take up to 4 fingers, the fingerprintscanner only works when you activate an unlock code or password to get out of the lockscreen.
Latest rom version is B029.

Quickfixes/Tips and tricks:
Push notifcations
To make push notifications work again create a widget (provided with the app) and place it on your home screen.
The widget will keep the services alive, even when you close the app in the taskmanager.
Make sure you toggle them on in the protected apps menu and put the powerplan on performance mode.
This works for all apps that came with the option to create a widget for it.
Homebutton changer (provided by kalinskym)
To disable HiVoice to allow a different application/ shortcut to work as the Home Button without being rooted. Download Debloater from http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294 and disable HiVoice.apk. (com.huawei.vassistant) After you have done that you won't see HiVoice anymore and will be able to change an app/ shortcut to the home button long press by going into Apps in Settings, clicking on Advance at the bottom. Then click Default app settings and finally Assistance & voice input to change assist app (home button app/shortcut)
One handed mode
To activate one handed mode drag you finger on the navigation bar from left to right to make the screen smaller and using for the right hand.
And drag it from right to left to make the screen smaller for using it with your left hand.
Once activated drag it in the opposite way once to restore full screen or tap once on the screen above that isn't in use.
Knuckle gesture/Splitscreen
To activate "Knuckle gesture" or just splitscreen, swipe your knuckle in the center of the screen from left to right or right to left.
When doing this succesfully the knuckle command will activate splitscreen.
Knuckle gesture/Advanced screenshot
Touch (knock) your knuckle on the screen and keep touching the screen, there will come a blue sparkle once activated drag a circle or square and it will give you a selection field.
On top are some figures you can choose from.
You can now select the part you want the screenshot from and save it directly on to the phone.
Double tap your knuckle on the screen to make a full screenshot. (same as volume down+power button)
Drawing an S on the screen with your knuckle will create a screen shot while it scrolls down the page.
This wil create a screenshot with a larger screenshot containing all the footage on the screen.
Now you don't have to make multiple screenshots to get everything on the screen and down.
(Check screenshot in the attachments)

This is useful information. Thanks for that! I have been having an issue with the fingerprint reader taking a second longer to unlock when the phone goes into a deep sleep; However, whenever the screen is recently turned off or when the phone is charging and I try to unlock it with the fingerprint scanner, it works super fast. It's only slow when I initially wake the phone from a deep sleep. Has this happened to you/anyone? I think it may either be an app or marshmallow doze feature. I would appreciate any suggestion/advice. Thanks.

I don`t have any delays with the fingerprint, however i use Smart Unlock to bypass the fingerprint in trusted locations.
Did you already tried to remove the old prints and register new?
Only thing else i can say if thats not working is to factory reset the phone.
on what powerplan did you put your phone? And did you toggle answer calls with fingerprint.
Sounds silly but if thats disabled there is a possibilty that the fingerprint app goes in sleep while activated for answering calls could keep it alive....Always worth trying...

I tried removing the old fingerprints and replaced with new ones. I even did a factory reset. The factory reset did it. That's what leads me to believe it's more an app than marshmallow doze. I just don't know how to identify which app. I even played with turning on all the features of fingerprint scanner. I am on performance mode. It's not a HUGE deal since the phone still unlocks faster than others, but it's a nuance since you know the phone is capable of unlocking faster. If you can think of another recommendation as to identifying the app or cause I would be grateful.

Hi, 4G works in Russia.
I think an easier way to change the voice assistant would be to download the Microsoft Clip Layer app. When it asks you to Tap on Assist app click on that setting and choose something different. I had already had HiVoice disabled when I downloaded the app so if someone else can confirm that it will work I'm sure someone would appreciate it.

Hi, I did a factory reset and confirmed that the Microsoft Clip Layer app does allow you to switch the voice assistant. It is a much easier process than disabling the app and does not require a computer hook-up.

"Hey Google" on Note 8

I'm just curious why the Note 8 has to use only OK Google and can't use Hey Google for waking up Google assistant. I really liked it when the option became available for my Note 5. Now its gone.... is it maybe because of Bixby? Doesn't seem like it would be the reason because we had S voice on the note 5 and they never conflicted.
I don't remember the option to be able to use "Hey Google" instead of "Ok Google" on my Note 5. But then again I never really used Google Assistant.
I just looked at my Note 5, I don't see that option, was that able to be changed using the Retrain Voice Model option? If yes, that option is still there on my Note 8, just in a different menu.

Yea its aggravating. Too bad it couldn't be like the gear s3 and train it to wake up on whatever command you want.
I'm following this thread... I was thinking that the 'hey google' option was now available with the upgrade to Android 8.

@Venom0642 do you have any idea why there's no option to use the hey Google wake up command for Google assistant on the note 8. Makes no sense to me. It's a more advanced device yet somehow it can't handle that?? Yet the Note5 could?

You should be able to. However I'm using a Pixel 2 XL that might make a difference
I'm guessing it's because they don't want it confusing "Hey Bixby" or their marketing team think they need to keep some sort of distance between the two assistants.

Well....it worked with Svoice just fine. The wake up command for Bixby is "Hi Bixby" which can't be customized either. Which is also a step backwards from Svoice, because I could set the wakeup to anything I wanted on my Note5.

In the same boat. After some stumbling here and there, I guess this option is device specific and only enabled or available on certain "select" devices which allow or would prompt to install the latest limited version of g-assistant.

Surprising to see Samsung Note 8 being a dominant white elephant in the room is casually ignored.
Even Samsung guides us to use the "Ok google" hotword as of now

The s9 recently got the "hey google" as a wake up command..... so here's hoping it comes soon since the note 8 follows the s9 in some respects.

Just fyi, I've finally got the hey google hot word to work. I'm on CRJ3 currently. I had retrain the voice model. I tried just saying Hey Google on the last two and now it works great.

GIF Keyboard missing on Oreo update?

Posted this over on reddit but should have asked here first. My Note8 has officially received Oreo ota update 2 days ago. One of the features im looking forward to is the GIF Keyboard. The changelog for the Samsung Keyboard includes - "The GIF keyboard lets you send GIFs". However I cant seem to figure out how to find/ use this GIF keyboard. Anyone know how? I only have emoji, stickers, live message, voice input, settings, handwriting, clipboard, one handed keyboard

While inside your text messaging app tap on your stickers icon inside your text area of your keyboard then see if you can switch to GIFs down below.

That's a bummer. I read in another thread that it was disabled in oreo and I was hoping that was not the case for everyone.

Probably a bug on the Oreo firmware? It is included in the official Note8 Oreo changelog

What messages version are you all on? If it's less than 5.xx try to install this https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsu...g-messages/samsung-messages-5-0-10-9-release/ using adb with the -l -r commands and see if that gets you GIFs back.

My "Messages" version is 4.4.10.13 and "Messages Service" version is 4.4.10.4. Looks like that is the culprit and Samsung forgot to include the latest messages version in the Oreo firmware. I haven't done any adb sideloading in ages. Will just wait for Samsung to fix this. Thanks for the input.
I have gif working on Samsung keyboard on the Note 8
The gif keyboard is integrated into Samsung keyboard and allows anyone you use it. The gif option is greyed out if it cannot be used, for instance typing on a browser.
I am using Verizon Note 8 on the Oreo update. I use Verizon messages and I have stock messaging app is disabled on my phone. Gif works fine in my messaging app.
So I would say messaging app not related. Maybe clear cache/data for Samsung keyboard.
Another note, for a fresh run I did factory reset my phone in settings after coming to oreo. Old habit when upgrading to new big builds from my rooted days. Figured I'dgo in fresh. All is working. I used smart switch to backup and restore to save time before and after reset.

This is correct, it has nothing to do with the Messages app, it's a feature of the Samsung Keyboard app. Gif was available & worked fine for me with Oreo.
Check to see if you guys have Samsung Keyboard v.3.0.10.34 installed. I have that installed on Nougat & gif keyboard is working fine (although it's useless to me, I never use it or stickers either).

Hmm, that's strange. I wonder if it's CSC/country related? I've used XEF & TMB CSC & both had gif keyboard.
If you go to languages for Samsung Keyboard in settings, do you have English updated/downloaded? If not it will have a down arrow next to it, if it is it should have a toggle next to. I'm not sure if it might be related but if English is not fully updated swipe & predictive text don't work on Samsung Keyboard. Just a thought, worth a try.

Thanks, I appreciate it! I actually happened to check the languages today and English was already up to date. I agree though, I'm starting to think it's maybe CSC related too. I'm on XSG.

Damn, hoping it might have been something simple.
Hope it gets figured out. If I get a chance tonight, I'll flash XSG CSC & see if it disappears for me.

Thanks, me too! If you have a chance to confirm when you have time that would be great, at least we'd know for sure. It's not crucial, but it seems like an odd feature to restrict. I'm curious...

Yup will do & will report back here.
You know, I remember seeing something a while back about gifs & fair use. If that's the issue it would make sense for some countries to not allow it but then again IIRC there were reports of people in the US on certain carriers not having it. Usually when carriers disable a feature is cause they offer their own paid service. I doubt carriers would have their own gif feature but if they do & that's the case, that's unbelievable! Greedy SOBs.

Ok, I tested & unfortunately it appears that my suspicion of it being CSC related is correct. With XSG CSC I don't get the gif keyboard.
I found online that mostly AT&T users are complaining that they don't have gif keyboard. Some are thinking that AT&T forget to include it in their update/firmware. Well that's not the case as it's CSC also. I installed AT&T CSC & sure enough, no gif keyboard either.
I wonder why some countries and/or carriers choose to disable it. I went back to T-Mobile CSC & have gif keyboard again.
Are you rooted?

Ahh, there we go! Thanks for testing and confirming shouren, much appreciated. Definitely seems strange that some carriers will allow but not others.
I'm slightly embarrassed to say I'm not rooted lol... I've rooted and modded every Android device I ever owned, and specifically got the Exynos Note 8 so I could continue doing the same here. Strangely though, I bought it and then never really felt a need to root yet. I don't even know who I am anymore...
When I do eventually root though, I might as well apply my carrier's CSC (Bell Canada) and hopefully resolve both root and gif keyboard at the same time

No problem. Ah ok, if you were rooted, I was gonna say I'll dig around in the XSG CSC & see if I can figure out how to get gif kb to work. I think I have an idea of what to change but I'd have to test. But since XSG is not your carrier's CSC, doesn't matter anyway.
Since XSG is not your carrier's CSC, might as well change to XEF CSC? I know gif kb works with XEF. No root needed, may wipe data though if that matters.

Bixby version 2.0, your thoughts?

Note 9 announced, so came Bixby along with it. This time it's version 2.0, out of the box. Samsung says it's now better at predicting user needs, processing natural languages and is quicker. You like it or you are going to remap it with a remapper or disable it forever? Or you want it to be dead already? Share your thoughts.
I'm too heavily invested in the Google assistant ecosystem. I liked how DJ Koh talked about how fragmented systems are because companies want to control, but results in a poor user experience, but then of course there's no way to disable bixby easily....not very open if you ask me.
I'll still test it out of interest.

Well, you can forget Bixby home, let only the "Bixby voice" to stay and to follow your commands, can disable both and 4get forever or can Remap with remapper.

Bixby seems to faster and context aware now (like Google Assistant), based on what I saw in Flossy Carter's unboxing and hands-on video (@8:02).

Yup, I watched that video sometime back. It's indeed improved but personally I'm not at all a fan of it when Google assistant so damn good
Hopefully its aware enough to disable itself before I do.

That could have been dope . Unfortunatrly, u will have to do that on your own for now.
Ill never use it, ill just disable it again like with my s8 plus
sent from my Exynos S9 plus, Pixel 2 XL or Note FE
I think I'll give it another shot. Only reason I had stopped using was because I'm invested in Google Assistant. At least that's what I thought until just now when I realized, the only thing I use Google Assistant for is a 30 minute timer for my lunch clock punches.
Plus there's just something weird about saying "Hi Bixby," out loud.

there is a way to disable it and remap the button to something else without root right?

Yes, by executing Android Debug Bridge commands as there are some nice remappers out there.

good to know that. Thanks!
I currently use it only for system control. My daily driver is Google.
I use Bixby all the time. Google Assistant is my reminder only use. Now that it remembers you are in a conversation and don't have to keep repeating the initial context I'll be using it even more.
I'm not seeing options to disable Bixby hardware button entirely in Note 9, unlike S9/S9+.
The settings and UI are different in Note 9 in comparison to S9/S9 plus, but no option of "do nothing" when you press the Bixby key in Bixby settings or Bixby voice settings.
**The unit I'm having is NOT a retail unit, it's a demo/review unit, with latest OTA flashed 2 days back with few enhancements and August security patch. The option to turn the Bixby hardware button into a totally "dead" button might show up in retail units.

Nope no "switch off" bixby buttons... very annoying And BX actions isn't working "yet". I gave Bixby a try for a couple of hours... it's a no go for me.

ButtonMapper doesn't work as well. But I would assume those apps might work in future once devs start working on it.
Update:
Checked a retail unit and Bixby settings are not different from the demo/review unit I had been using.
So, using bixby/phone settings one cannot turn the button completely off, for now. This is ugly and a step backwards from S9/S9+ IMO.
