P10 - sensor issues // screen gets dark in the bright sun - Huawei P10 Questions & Answers

Hello dear xda-community,
I just returned from my vacation to Mexico. Whilst being there and taking pictures I encountered a very strange dilemma with the display and the brightness-automatic of the P10: Even if I deactivated the automatic screen-brightness, the system shaded when shooting pictures in the bright sunlight. Which resulted in a barely seeable screen, whereby the S7 of my girlfriend provided a sharp and bright screen.
I really wonder what caused this strange behaviour, and if anyone of you experienced a similar behaviour? I really don't get it why a feature still works when it's deactivated -__-
Thanks, cheerz
J

did no one experience this issue?

I experienced this, too.
But mostly I got it working with manual focus.
The most annoying thing is that the colors are a bit darken with bright sunlight, even if the sun isn't in the picture. The colors seems to be faded, the saturation is very low. See the attachment, the smaller prop plane is blue in reality but on this photo it looks like black, like the background buildings, too.

Hello Janno,
my issue is not with the postproduction, but with the lightsensor which is shading the whole display (even if this option has been disabled)
Thanks for your reply though, I chose a bad headline

Um getting this issue too... After about 10mins in the bright sun light the phone dims...even when i turn off automatic brightness and increase the brightness level it wont work...i think its a flaw on oreo update...when using nougat this never encountered

I guess it has something todo with the device temperature - Have the same behavior while using navigation :x

hm... not sure if it's really temperature-driven, since in the lockscreen no dimming took place and the display was shining in brightest and good readable colors.

Yeah thats true...

Its a bug in the display, you can turn it off in developer options but it still occurs. I think B365 has a fix for it

is B365 a user here?
Thanks for the help

B365 is an Oreo update.

I am pretty sure it is temperature issue, had it on oreo 360 and 365 after update. It happens while I am driving with navigation (waze)and charging and direct sunlight on the device. Then I take the p10 and place it in front of the air conditioner opening for 30 seconds and everything is ok.

So for me, it has something todo with the device temperature. I bought a new phone holder, which is placed in front of the Ventilation and my display didnt changed the brigthness anymore ?

Same problem
In application's it get dark even you have automatic switched off. This issue is a really annoying and looks like connected with temperature.

My P10 was/is on B365 as this issue happened. Just got it back today from repairs, of course they found nothing^^
So it seems really to be a software-issue. Any way to fix this?

Pulsating Hue? Question.

I know there are "issues" with the screen on the Note but I just want to verify what I'm seeing. I'm totally fine with any color distortion at angles and not pure whites but this is bothersome. Maybe someone else can test. If you open the video maker app(more noticeable here) and just stare at the screen does it pulsate from normal to a green'ish hue every couple seconds? Mine does and it's quite annoying. Is there a fix for this? Does 2.3.6 fix this? Am I crazy? I've disabled all auto brightness and power saving brightness settings and rebooted.
I ordered from Amazon in the U.S. from Global Mobiles but I got a German version. I have a feeling doing an exchange is going to be a NIGHTMARE and I might get the same results or worse. Has Samsung acknowledged this? Any custom ROMS fix this? Personally I don't think it's hardware as some apps/screens do not exhibit this problem. When I do the *#0*# I don't see it there... ::sigh::
Thanks.
You mean on the Video editor, on the first screen where you have "New project" on the bottom?
I don't see anything special happening. The image is stable until the backlight is dimmed after 20 seconds. The image looks a little more green if you look at it from an angle but does not change by itself.

Mine actually says "Video Maker".
Ok then I guess my device is defective... Damn. Thanks for checking.
Hold up! Now when I check it it's not doing it. It seems to happen randomly as if some app or service is causing it to happen. Man I hope this is a software fix. Now to try and find the root of what is causing this...
OK I just hard reset and am going to try running stock for a day or so and see what happens. But man I really don't like auto brightness and the power brightness setting...

[Q] htc one screen problem

hi i am in the uk.. on three network. i got my htc one on the 3rd of april, and 4 days later the screen started to flicker? not all the time? but browsing? esp facebook or anything page with white? i guess the white shows up the flicker more? like i say NOT all the time but soo annoying!! not what i expected from a high end phone? Now let me just say i love this phone.. but thought i cant have this.. so i fill out support form for htc and they reply quick advising me it should not do this and to get it changed. i contact three go through the whole call centre thing (like pulling teeth) anyways the upshot was.. three sent me another brand new phone the next day (yesterday) and took back my first one. And guess what? as soon as i switch the phone on, same screen flicker? i treated the first phone like a new born baby didnt drop or bash it 4 days=screen flicker. another new phone as soon as i use it = screen flicker!! i so love this phone but im so gutted!! any suggestions from ANYONE would help.
kind regards

This isn't helpful but you must just be unlucky to have had it happen twice because mine's been perfect and I've not seen anyone else on this forum mention that problem with theirs.
I guess you'll have to get a new one sent out again and hope for the best
Could you make a short video clip to illustrate your problem ?

hi.. to be honest i dont think a video would pick the problem up? you know i could just be being a kill joy? ive watched videos etc and there really isnt a problem with that at all.. in fact the quality of the picture is fab? if i could use an analogy? remember when the volume control on your stereo would get dust in it? and you would have to twiddle the knob to cure it? its a bit like that? like i say it does not do it all the time but i notice it with white in the screen? like facebook google and when i am navigating thru the screens on the phone like settings etc? the white flickers white/slightly darker white? hence my example? now ive changed my text messages colour scheme so that doesnt annoy me now with it.. but obviously as a electronics layman.. i cant help but think if it was a problem with the screen itself, other colours would do the same as they would if there was a loose connestion? and also if it was a power flow problem with the battery? same thing? not just the white on screen? so i can only conclude as a layman again.. that it is some sort of issue with the os? screen refresh rate maybe? i just dont know? and i cant help think stupidly or not that when htc finally get around to an os update to 4.2.2 (or whatever it is) from 4.1.2 the whole thing will be resolved?
Could it be the auto brightness doing its thing? Try turning it off maybe that might solve it.
I might be totally wrong, be great if that fixed it though. Good luck
well well well!!!! And there you have it!! or at least something like that? ive always used the multi widgit for wifi bluetooth brightness etc? so i have brightness preset on that. instead ive gone into display settings, adjusted brightness with slider? no more flicker!! NO MORE FLICKER!! who ever you are!! thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Was this happening when the stock power widget brightness was set to medium?
If so, I have the same flickering ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2243483 ), but I've found out that its not the power widgets fault per se, but the the the level that it sets it to. The widget set the brightness to 33%, and that the level which I'm getting flickering at, regardless of if it was set with the power widget or by the slider. The flickering happens on screen with a good amount of white. Google search result webpage is a good test case; it shows the flickering clearly at 33%. It also seems to depend on where the white is on the screen. For example, I can induce flickering at 40% brightness by moving a light colored icon from the bottom of the screen to the top! Moving it back to the bottom causes the flickering to go away. I can also do it by moving around or resizing the Gmail widget. Flickering happens for me to some extent at brightness values between 33 and 45 under certain screen conditions. Above or below these brightness values, the screen is top notch, no endless flickering at all regardless of how much white is on screen. I'm starting to think this has to do with the dynamic contrast feature of the One. It seems as though it falls in an endless loop of trying to change the contrast, as if it cant decide on what to set the contrast to. Or it could be that the dynamic contrast is fighting for a certain brightness value, but the manually set brightness is not allowing it. I might be wrong about this, and it could just be a hardware backlight problem, regardless, I wish HTC had the Sense (ha ha!) to allow us to disable dynamic contrast if we wanted to. I'm pretty sure this is whats causing the issue where people see flickering when the keyboard pops up.
screen issue?
hi..
i had the widget set on the third setting, the fourth being the brightest. i had the same problem with my first phone and thought at the time it may have been a backlight problem? or power flow problem? i sent that phone back and the next phone did the same? after posting on here.. i removed the widget and manually adjusted the brightness. i like the screen quite bright, manual adjustment cleared the problem for me. i gotta say yep the flicker was more visible on screens with alot of white, google, facebook, texts? and way way annoying! i can only suggest you try the same as i did? perhaps it is just a quirk with the htc? or maybe the os? you never know, when the update to keylime or whatever it is called comes out the flicker may go totally?
JUST had this on facebook? hope it helps?

Is the pink tint on all devices or is it a defective screen issue?

Hi, I have noticed the pink tint to the screen when using adaptive brightness below 30-40% and was wondering if it effects all devices.
I have read a lot of people talking about it and that it happens because the screen goes so dark and some people are saying that it is supposed to happen. Is this true and if not is it effecting all devices?
I am on my 3rd device now the first one i took back after a few hours as the screen was tinted really yellow and uneven and my second one had image retention pretty bad and would happen after 5 seconds of the nav bar being displayed and i dont know if it effected them as i didnt try adaptive brightness as i didn't ha e them for long enough.
The one thing i find really weird though is that i have been using the lux app to test if it was to do with the phone going so dim and while there is a slight pink tint when putting the brightness down on the lux app it is no where near as bad as when adaptive brightness is being used and the lux app goes a lot darker.
Thanks.
I've seen all does it specially at night. I consider this is normal
Its because you're brightness is below 0. If you use adaptive brightness at night its lower than 0 without adaptive brightness. You will see the same thing if you use the lux brightness app.
Edit: I noticed you used the lux app, you're correct its not as bad with it, but it's still there. I could be a software implementation or a bug for all we know.
So it is actually on all devices and not a select few?
I got 7 days to return it for another one but if it is on all devices and there is nothing that can fix it i dont think there is no point in risking it for another nexus 6 that could have a worse screen like uneven colours.

This is more of a feature than a defect, frankly...
Not that it is pink, but that it can be dropped down as low as it can.
Basically, there is a minimum brightness threshold. The lower the brightness, the less power it consumes. If you set the brightness below a certain point, the colors (because of the nature of the amoled) will start to mess up a bit. Most vendors will set the minimum brightness high enough to not have this happen. Google sets it a bit lower to save a bit more power, without making the colors go *entirely* crazy by setting it WAY too low.
Its made like that to conserve power. All nexus 6 are like that
I thought it was a defect too until I started researching and like someone suggested turned off adaptive brightness which made the tint go away completely even at lowest brightness setting.

Adaptive brightness is actually a really nice feature.
If the pink bugs you too much, you can (if you know your way around a compiler, that is...) bump up the minimum a little.
What if adaptive brightness is off, and the brightness is set to at least 70%, and the pink tint crap still happens? kernel issue? nougat issue? Because it's very annoying, randomly happens to me. usually, going into twrp and clearing cache fixes it. sometimes it doesn't though.
Help.
EDIT
Never mind. I figured it out. it was night mode that was causing the pink tint via purenexus settings.

Brightness issues

I have this weird brightness problem where I have it at 50% and it would randomly dim and brighten like crazy. I tested at 100% brightness and it also dims and brightens. Obviously, I don't have it on auto brightness but it sure acts like it.
Anyone with the same issue? Is it a defect? I just got the phone today and I'm afraid to exchange it to have the same problem again. I really like this phone. There's always a friggin issue on a new phone. It's ridiculous.

I think is a software problem. Lollipop still have lot to fix. Mines look the same. Can be a display minor isue. Not sure, but for me this phone doesn't have the best brighness at all. But I love this phone better than others for now. If you came from samsung phone, there is a big diferent in brightness. Post some screen shoot. One in a white background, and the other in a grey one. I will post the same and you tell me if something is diferent. Sorry for my grammar. Is not the best !!!!?

In Q&A is a thred call DPI Change. Try that, but reed carfully. you'll need root for that.
I appreciate your input but I don't know how the things you mentioned would help me in my case. I would need to do a video in order to see the problem instead of screen shots. Dpi change will do nothing in this case as well. You may be confused with the issue I have.
Well I try my best. As I sed could be a software problem. DPI is a resolution thing, can help a little. Also you can link a video to see exactly what you talking about. The reson I ask for the screen shoot is becaus I can probably see a differences between your brightness and mines. Hope somebody can help you on that.

Question True AMOLED display ? Is my device defective ?

Hi. I don't have any way to show this but my unit has what I think is backlight bleed when displaying a fully black (#000000) picture.
This bleeding is somehow especially visible at 35% (don't ask me why) and 100% brightness.
Now, it's only really visible when in the dark and when my eyes are used to it so it's not a big deal for daily use. However, this screen is supposed to be AMOLED which presumably works on the same principle of OLED displays.
My OnePlus 3T, with the same picture of a plain black background and with the brightness turned to the max shows no sign of any light whatsoever, as any true OLED display should.
My Zenfone 8 however has a weird pattern of tiny scattered dots and a few vertical lines you can barely make out all around the display and especially along the left edge of the display.
Can anyone with a Zenfone 8 check if they observe the same effect ? Like I said, it's only visible when your eyes are well accustomed to obscurity. I tried repeating the experiment yesterday when going to sleep and didn't see anything at first but I woke up later that night and sure enough, the same pattern was visible again.
In case you're doubting the file I used to test it out, here it is. A fully black pic. Of course you have to watch it in fullscreen so that no UI element can pollute your vision.
Any insight on what might be happening would be greatly appreciated.
Used your file and checked it in a pitch black place. Can't see nothing on full brightness. I still had the home-recent apps slider on the bottom but covered it with my finger. I couldn't tell where the screen is at all.
Maybe yours has some defect but if you cannot see it without hours of eyes adjustment than I think you are exaggerating quite a bit.
I've been using the LG V30 which also has OLED but it had a grey lighting always. Don't know why. This screen is much much better.

It's not like I was purposely trying to find flaws in the display. I was looking for a wallpaper while in bed and as I was zooming in a picture, I noticed as if what I initially thought were color variations in the image remained static on the screen. It wasn't due to a dirty screen. In doubt, I tested with the black picture and cranked the brightness to emphasize the issue and it was clear something was up.
So even if this issue can't be seen during the day, it's still something that can be seen in normal use when using the phone in the dark.
I just went from the my PC to a dark room and tried to reproduce it with brightness at 35% and I could see it in a matter of seconds.
One of the key factors that made me buy this phone in the first place is the AMOLED display. If it's actually defective, I might as well get it replaced. I would just like to know if it's worth the hassle or if every unit has that defect maybe due to something in the manufacturing process.
Can't see anything like that on mine. Totally black everywhere. Try exchanging the phone. Or just give it back and get another so they will not try to repair it.
Thank you very much for your feedback.
The only way the pixels can light is if they have current. Otherwise they are black as night.
Bad firmware or defective hardware.
Try clearing the system cache.
My display has that too, but only at 60 and 120 hz. At 90 Hz, the Dysplay is without lighting, so black as it should.

I don't have the option in the bootloader to reset the system cache, only "wipe data/factory reset".
I selected it thinking it would let me choose what to wipe but then it warned me about permanently deleting everything so I nope out of there.
Any other way I can do that ?

It's in Settings somewhere under storage or memory.
On Samsung's it's on the boot menu.
Lol, a factory reset will definitely clear it

That's it! I got the same behavior. Perfect black at 90hz, grey goo at 60 and 120. Since I'm not the only one, I suppose this is "normal". I guess that must be some sort of compromise they had to make for the display and they hoped people wouldn't notice.
It's a shame but at least I'm relieved knowing the screen works well at 90Hz. Since the 120Hz was not one of the key features I was looking for, this doesn't feel too bad a compromise to deal with.
Thank you everyone for your time and replies.
Interesting, I hope this is a software issue that can be fixed with an update...
Same.. When viewing black wallpaper @60/120 hz, it got scattered gray all over the place with a vertical line in the middle. Noticeable if you're in a dark room. Glad i'm not the only one
Alright, so I was able to capture a long exposure photo of the phone on a black screen. The issue appears on 60 and 120Hz like mentionned above. I found that it is more apparent on the 120Hz mode than 60Hz. 90Hz is flawless. The effect is kind of exagerrated, but it was the only way to visibly capture it.

Also during restart, the "Zenfone" loading screen appears like that in dark room.
Same behavior here, 120 and 60Hz are not truly black. 90Hz is.
Quick reply to add here that for those that use the phone at 60Hz, you can enable DC Dimming, that solved the issue for my device. 120Hz still needs to be figured out though...

Interesting.
DC dimming can reportedly have its own drawbacks as well like skewing color rendering.
What is DC Dimming & Why it's Important for AMOLED Smartphones? - Gizmochina
OLED panels have a lot of advantages. They have better color accuracy and contrasts (including better blacks) and are thinner and brighter than traditional LCD panels. So, it’s no surprise that smartphone manufacturers are shifting to OLED panels for their smartphones. Even the mid-range ones...
www.gizmochina.com
after further investigation and trying to replicate on several ZF8's, it seems that this is a normal behavior. The questions is: is it hardware or software?
