Does it play Netflix and Amazon Prime in HD? - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

I've read on a couple forums that huawei phones don't support Netflix HD and Amazon Video in HD. Is this true? I might have to go with the S9 plus if it is

I have on Netflix HDR. So I guess that answer ur question.

If you upgrade from an older huawei and use the phone clone, the amazon app will not show the 4k content, but if you uninstall it and re-install it does
Netflix, I get no HD/UHD 4K/HDR content
I'm using the version CLT-L29 8.1.0.102(c782) on Three UK

even weirder issue, amazon prime stops showing the Ultra HD titles on the P20 Pro and only shows standard titles, but if in middle of playing a title it shows HDR - uninstalling and re-installing doesn't seem to affect it now

Literally my dilemma too

Stock firmware here in France, works perfectly in HD with HDR (badge shown on films and series). The same in Amazon Prime video, work perfectly in HD with HDR badge on the series infos.

Amazon say the device won't show HD

don't believe that
Ultra HD works fine on Amazon app for the Mate 10 Pro, so should work fine on the P20 Pro and does if you have the 106(C432) version. When you install on the 102(C732) version it shows UltraHD content then refreshes and it's gone - if you were watching something in UltraHD when go to continue watching it is listed as UltraHD but you can't pick anything else.
Netflix works on the 106(C432) in HD/HDR but not on the 102(C732) both devices are for european markets, but not sure why one is 432 and other is 732 and why the 732 is behind on the firmware front, I have emailed Huawei regarding this to find out why we can't get the features

I have 102 C782 which doesn't show UHD for example, Blackout says "This video is currently unavailable"
I am in the UK on Three

Gotta wonder what it is about this Android app that makes it work on a Google TV (running Android) and not a Nexus 7 tablet.
I've seen Amazon Instant Video working via a PS3 (non Android) on a non-Google TV. Too bad there isn't a Google Nexus 7 compatible app in the Google Play Store to do the same thing.
In time, Amazon will learn to do it the Netflix way, and it might actually work on the Nexus 7.
Have you read the user comments on the Play Store for this app?

Where To Find 2K Videos?

So I got this fancy new phone with 2K resolution so where can I get a video to blow my friends away? YouTube seems to only stream up to 1080p even though several of the videos say 2K.
On the g3 there was an apk floating around that supported 2k video in the YouTube app maybe google or search the forums for that particular YouTube apk. If I'm not mistaken the web version of YouTube allows this as well.

To watch it on 4k TV. Also frame grabs from video are much better quality and you can zoom in, without loss of quality when using phone for watching and actually I use it very often on my Note 3, since with fixed lens framing is always far from perfect and there is always option of not using 4k video at all.

Use viral pro and get rid of YouTube, viral pro is way better and streams way faster. Try the free version.
This is a youtube issue. Other qHD phones lost their 1080/1440p options as well. There are a lot of 1 star reviews on the play store complaining about this. I hope they give us 1440p back soon!

I tried the free version of viral, I really like it so far. Being able to play videos over another app is amazing. The problem is I can still only watch videos at 720p.
I remember reading somewhere right after the phone came out that it may be an issue with the turbo, specifically after the ota that was released day one. People were saying that they were able to watch videos at 1440p before they installed that update. Of course now I can't find the thread where I read that to confirm.
Really hoping that we get Lollipop relatively quickly. Thinking that will fix some of the little software bugs the phone has.
found an older one that I least gives me 1080p
5.13.3-51303300
I have the Sony Xperia Z3v which has a 1080p screen and YouTube only works at 720p for it as well. So I believe it is an app issue and not related to the phone.

This is not the case, I have viral and u can watch whatever quality u want as long as the YouTuber is doing it in that quality. It has nothing to do with the Turbo I guarantee you. Not every YouTuber does it in the same quality, sometimes I'm watching 2K and other times I can only watch 360P. Again it's all in what the YouTuber is using to record it. For example go to MKBHD or Phonedogs channel, they usually have videos in 2K.

I understand how youtube works, and yes I know that not all videos are capable of higher resolutions.
I have tried using viral with multiple videos, videos that are definitely high enough resolution, like the 4K gopro videos on youtube. I even tried some of the videos from phonedogs as you mentioned. None will play at higher than 720p on my phone when using viral or the youtube app. My friend who has an LG G3 is able to play at 1440p without issues. Definitely seems like an issue with the phone to me.
Yeah still nothing. Tried installing older youtube version and viral. Nothing. WTF good is a 4k screen if there is nothing you can watch in 4k.
Note 4 has the same problem. Don't know what's up. My S4 and Moto X 2014 and One Max all work properly.

Amazon prime video not working

Hi Guys,
For an unknown reason, Amazon prime video doesn't seem to want to work on my Note 8 (works flawlessly on other android and Samsung devices I have). Everytime I start a video I get an errorstating "Decryption failure".
Another thread in the S7 forum suggested renaming a system file but I'm not rooted and don't intend to for the moment.
Anybody else seeing the same behaviour ?
Any solution not requiring root ?
Thanks

Hi Guys,
After a month of testing, I isolated my problem : Amazon Prime Video works perfectly well on my Galaxy Note 8 alone. Problems start when I try to use the HMDI connection : I want to watch my movies on a big screen using the USB-C to HDMI cable. It works perfectly well with everything else, but systematically causes an error with Amazon Prime Video latest updates. Only by reverting to very old apk versions am I able to use it with HMDI connection.
Any ideas ,
Thanks
I tried everything and downloaded one from Galaxy app store as well. It still doesn't work on my note 8. Please help. I just bought a one year subscription
Just checked casting, get sound but no video. b.s. copyright sh*t !?
Older version worked casting to chrome cast. But using screen mirroring to Samsung TV got video, but audio on phone not tv, which might be nice for night time viewing.

Works fine on my Note 8.
I just got the Note 8 and Prime Video only works about half the time. The other half, it spins like it's loading but never loads. The interesting thing is that all other video streaming apps become unresponsive as well (Hulu, YouTube, ect) after Prime Video. Any solutions so far? I'm using version 3.0.205.34141
I'm in the same situation as the OP. I eventually got HDMI-out working on my Galaxy S8 (5-yr old phone) with a very old prime video APK, and possibly (I can't remember) doing the file rename mentioned at this XDA thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/amazon-prime-video-decryption-failure.3603573/page-2
2 problems:
A.) When mirroring to a TV via HDMI on the Galaxy S8 (phone), the resolution and color of the video playing are worse on the TV than on the phone (example, I'll have downloaded full HD content, like 4GB for a movie, and it will look fantastic (like 1080P or better) playing on the phone, but looks noticeably worse (like 240p or maybe 480) on the TV. .... because of this, I purchased Samsung's newest tablet, with confirmed HDMI-out ability.
B.) So, on the Galaxy Tab S8 (Tablet --latest samsung tablet in 2022), I'm getting the "decryption_error" message as soon as I connect to a TV via HDMI cable. I don't plan to root it, so can't rename that file referred to in the other thread..
Questions:
1. Are others seeing the poor resolution after going to the trouble of getting HDMI-out working? (as in #A above).
2. Did others have any luck fixing the "decryption error" by changing to a newer HDMI cable? (changing cables sounds fishy, and this answer found elsewhere on the internet is the amazon helpdesk equivalent of 'reboot the computer')
Please let me know. I may go to the trouble rooting the tablet, but only if others have gotten HDMI-out at full, HD/UHD resolution to a TV.

Do you have the phone set for WQHD+?
if not, YouTube will not show the higher res options.

Yes I do. Even put "Entertainment mode" and nothing. It's the application itself. Every YouTube video I used to watch on 2k hdr . Now only capped at 1080.

I think it was because majority experiencing dropped frames when watching it. So probably got listed as being incompatible with 1440p+ HDR streams.
Work around would be to use Chrome:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

i at least get 1440p
i at least get 1440p. i don't spend time on the app and didn't know the restriction was removed until i read this...
Ever thought about trying OP YouTube? I've been enjoying it. Only thing I miss from the stock YouTube app is the option to expand the video to fit our display ratio but that's a small thing to miss.

For regular (non HDR) you still have that option. Try finding a HDR video and you are capped at 1080p. 2k/4k options are not available anymore in the app for HDR content.
Ok... I wasted hours on trying to fix this.
By coincidence it started when I started playing with the app resolution in Gamtuner.
I ended up wiping the whole phone - twice.
Second time without restoring any backup.
Downloaded latest APK from Aptoide in the end
Then consulted XDA
Always look up XDA first...
Btw. Search I the app to look only in the Note 8 thread... non existent or can't I just find it?
Looks like this is due to the 1440p 60fps issue with the Note 8. - 1080p 60fps works without dropped frames with Note 8, but Note 8 has been having problems with 1440p 60fps dropping frames. This is my believe why Google (YouTube) stopped supporting 1440p 60fps with the Note 8.
Google (YouTube) is still supporting 1440p at lower frames per second (30fps), when available, with the Galaxy Note 8.
Hopefully there will be a solution in the near future that Google (YouTube) can support 1440p 60fps with the Note 8.
Slightly off topic, is it normal for YouTube on mobile device to have some many adverts? I ask because I normally watch YouTube from chrome browser on a PC. Was shocked how the Note 8 YouTube app appears to be bloated with more adverts, some even appear every few minutes while watching a video.

I don't know, since I have YouTube Red with my Play Music subscription.
