Unstable LTE/4g Reception - Sony Xperia XZ2 Questions & Answers

Does anyone notices unstable signal bars on this phone? Same spot, same mobile network, my pixel 2 xl gets full bar while xz2 only hover around 1-3 bars.
This may also contribute to mediocre battery life I've been having. My mix 2s (sd845) certainly fares better in that department.

I can only compare it to Z5 on same location(basement,) which had none or 1 bar signal and no lte/4g, now i have 1-2 bars and lte/4g on xz2

I have the same issue. But it's everywhere. Not just in limited areas. Sometimes, I have LTE+ and next thing you know, it just says LTE with full bars but to internet. It's been doing that all day. might need a new SIM so I'm going to T-Mobile today.

Maybe it is a software related problem.
I had the same problem on LineageOS 14.1 and 15.1 on my Nexus 6, too.

i have the same issue with my xz2, the LTE network is unstable , sometime it goes to 1 bar or no HSPA instead of 4g , is it hardware or software issue ?

I've just tested a z3, xz2 and p8 lite 2017.
At home, weak signal sometimes, p8 has 4 bars, z3 3 bars and xz2 jumping between 1 and 2 bars.
At work, strong signal, p8 4 bars again, z3 jumping between 3 and 4 bars, xz2 2 bars and switching between 4g and 3g a lot.
Really hope they sort this.

Actually, my signal have always been pretty stable, coming from Z3. When I say stable, I mean 3 bars at LTE (4G reception in my location is still not that good, this is the location's fault, tbh). I got 1 to 2 bar(s) at LTE with my Z3.

I have noticed the opposite. My XZ2 has more stable 4G than other phones in my household consisting of iphones and samsungs and its way better than my previous xiaomi.

I get the feeling that the XZ2's signal bar is showing the signal quality rather than the signal strength. For example, when I'm in a congested area I can see that in apps like Cellmapper I have a strong signal to the nearby mast, but the signal quality is poor due to the high number of users and interference.
Overall, it is better to show the quality of the signal rather than the strength. Ultimately it's the quality that has the most impact on data speeds.

I have better reception on LTE/4g on the XZ2 than I do on my Nexus 5X, that sits around 2-3 bars and the XZ2 is constantly on 4 bars...so no complaints here ?

Same problem with my XZ2C
I get 2 bars on average on my XZ2 Compact. But it's very jumpy. When i take it out of my pocket it goes from 1 to 2 bars. No problem with other phones.

Signal Quality Issues here too
Have had my XZ2 for a couple of months and yes, signal issues galore. I commute for work on same highway almost every day and know where I would get some signal issues with my previous samsung phone but with sony its everywhere..even when I'm home its unpredictable. Sometimes I just get a voice message indicator but I did not hear it ring at all. I am aware that not all signal issues are the phones fault..the provider also is not perfect at times but I just cant help to compare it with my previous phones (many brands) and Sony falls short in that area... I was very optimistic being a nice top-tier phone, great pictures and video, the included software is not bad either, great sound from internal speakers including a nice display but fails to deliver on its most primal and basic function...voice calls. Will keep waiting for that much awaited OTA upgrade where Sony tends to this signal issue problem. If not, its off to craiglist.

[Q] O4X Weak Cellular Network Reception (Particularly 3G)?

Hi,
I have my O4X since Feb in India. My room is in corner of my house so reception is generally on weaker side. But I have noticed that my O4X has weaker reception as compared to other phones, even cheaper Chinese android phones get better reception than this.
Coming back to problem, using same network sim in both my O4X and my Xolo (cheap android phone), at same place at same time I get 3 out of 4 bar of reception in Xolo, whereas my O4X shows either no bar or just a single bar out of 5 bars. I tried different operators, different sims but this reception scenario remained same, all are 3G network sims. While on 2G network I don't really see any issue with reception. I am getting insane as to what is causing this issue, I have noticed this thing since day one, with ICS, JB, now I am at CM 10.1.
Is this a common issue with this phone? Does it have weaker radio/reception? Or is it with my handset only? Shall I give it in for repairs? What you guys suggest?
Thanks in advance for all the suggestions that will come my way..
I am from India too. I think you are using any phone cover, maybe. It makes problems. For me it happens. I always remove my phone's cover when using net. Also, there are some network frequency that receives low signal. I am using Reliance 3G. I am in west bengal state. In my house west bengal network works well. In my friend's house kolkata specific signal receiveing is well. Also, in his L5 kolkata network's frequency works out well and in my 4X wb is better. When he came to my house he has no signal reception in wb network but I was using it well and I got to his house I had no signal or bad signal reception in Kolkata network.
In short everything is device specific but our device has better network reception. You can try to set network manually.

I do use a mobile cover, will try it without that. I have used Reliance 3G, Airtel 3G and MTNL 3G all in this phone and generally notice a weaker network as compared to other phones at the same place using same network. I have also noticed lately that generally it gets a normal signal when its kept on bed but as soon as I touch my phone signal drops significantly, sometimes from 3-4 bars to 1 bar immediately. And as soon as I take my hand off of it signal improves.
Well, I am not sure what to do now, will try to use without cover and see. Else it will go for repairs. Only reason I havent sent it for repairs yet is because of unlocked bootloader, will have to relock it and flash to stock before I do. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Updated to 4.3 Firmware and have less signal bars? Read This!

I've seen some people post regarding less/lower signal bars when updating to the new radios which come with 4.3 and you have LTE.
At first I said "WTF" but then I realized... the bars are now sort-of working as intended...
Let me explain,
If you're connected to LTE, the bars are now based off your LTE signal strength. I noticed even at roughly -110 to -100 I only get one bar. I believe the bars start going up dramatically once you have a signal strength greater than -100 (for example, -95db, -85db) And we all know -130db is the cutoff before we lose LTE.
I figured this out once I turned the phone to "CDMA only" to test. Once on "CDMA only" I had almost full bars, (-70-75db for 3G/1x)
To conclude, if you're on LTE and only have 1 bar, you most likely/probably have great cell phone coverage as that 1 bar is determining signal strength for only LTE. When connected to LTE, you're also still connected to 1xRTT which is used for voice. LTE is only used for Data at the moment.
If you really want to test your cell phone coverage, you can get one of those programs to tell you both your 1x signal and 4G signal simultaneously.
Edit: I forgot to mention, Considering the LTE radio and 1x/3g radio are seperate, you're going to get mixed results depending on signal penetration through walls, trees, etc. From what I've seen so far, as of right now 1x/3g penetrates a bit better than LTE. But, really depends on your surroundings
Thanks for the info. Someone else tipped me off about this, and a few SpeedTest checks confirmed it. In fact, 1 bar with the 4.3 ROM produced slightly better results than the 4.1 ROM with 5 bars.

Yup, which makes sense because when connected to LTE on 4.1 the 5 bars are based off your voice coverage, not LTE strength.
Still seems kind of dumb. I'd rather know what signal I have to make a phone call rather than what kind of data I can expect.
Thanks for info !
Sometimes just 1 bar but internet working well, but 4-5 bars it is not working/slower !

5.1 giving better radio signal?

I have noticed that with 5.1 while I normally got just 1-2 bars at home of signal I am now getting 3-4 and better speeds. At first I thought I was now getting Band 12(tmobile) but LTE Discovery says that I'm still on Band 4.
Anyone else seeing this?

When I am in a very weak signal area, I am definitely getting a better LTE signal. But voice/calling (GSM) is worse on AT&T. Where I could make a call previously, on a very weak signal, now I get nothing.
Just finished flashing 5.1 and setting it up - and I'm definitely getting higher single indicators for LTE now (T-mobile Band 4) - I rarely used to get 1 bar in my house, but now it constantly shows 2-3 bars. Whether the coverage is actually improved is yet to be determined...
5.1 is definitely giving me a better radio signal in my house as I usually only had 0 to 1 bars. Now i'm getting 3 to 4 bars and my messages are sending without without delay now. I'm on AT&t.

I'm getting better "signal" on 5.1 (more bars) However my lte speeds are horrible now Was 15-20 mbps and now its consistently 3-5 mbps on Tmobile.
Indicators can be changed to always look good. Actual signal probably didn't change.

This.
Its showing 3-4 bars of LTE in my house now, where before lucky to have 1.
But dbms are literally the same for me at least.
At work, inside thick concrete walls, inside of more thick concrete walls...I used to be able to keep a solid 4G signal. Now it barely keeps connected, and when it does it never goes off of EDGE. I'm on TMO btw.
I think I'll be switching back to the last radio. Not impressed with this new one from the 5.1 update.
Another thought is the transition from LTE to HSPA might be improved. I wasn't able to make a phone call in my basement at my desk. Now after the 5.1 update I was able to call and hold a conversation in the same spot.

The 47E radio is the best radio so far (for me at least).

Moto G5S plus always has low signal

Hello. I have a Moto G5S plus using a Verizon Sim. I had a Moto G5+, but gave it to my cousin and got the G5S+. The G5+ always had full bars in my house. However, the G5S+ has full bars sometimes, but gets only 1 bar a lot of the time. It fluctuates a lot. It seems to mostly become low signal when its asleep. They both will be using the same Sim card and network, but their amount of signal differ greatly. I also tested the signal with a Nexus 6P, Galaxy S4, iPhone 6S plus, Moto E2, and Moto E4. Each of them have full signal in my house all the time while the G5S+ gets 1 maybe 2. The wifi range also seems to be less compared to the G5+. I thought maybe I got a defective unit, but I got a replacement from Motorola and the replacement is exactly the same way. Is this just how the phone is? Did I possibly get a 2nd defective device? Or is it potentially a software problem and can be fixed with an update, if Motorola ever ever decides to? Not having signal when another phone will somewhere is a deal breaker for me. Can this be fixed, or should I just get a G5+? Thank you.
I'm afraid I've got the same problem with a straight talk verizon sim. I was running unofficial lineage 15 and now i'm running gzr validus (also oreo). In both cases I get either a very poor 1 bar of 4g, or 2 or 3 bars of 3g at home while my girlfriend is pumped all the way with lte on her verizon iphone. We have been in several other places where I complained about the signal and hers was fine. I switched to this phone because it can handle verizon (I WAS on virgin mobile/sprint with my moto G osprey getting FINE lte coverage but wanted to switch to verizon because their coverage is just a little better around here)! Well Now I'm On Verizon and guess what, my coverage sucks worse than ever. I actually hit 1x pretty frequently while driving around. It's pretty sad actually. I wish I could take the cameras and internal storage of this phone but have them back in my osprey. sanders looked great on paper but in practice has not been good to me.
Same with straight talk (which uses att). Same sim in my 6p in same location shows at least 3 bars. This drops to none sometimes, but everything still works fine, speed tests are the same regardless of bars. Even flashed a newer modem, no difference. Really wish the 6p wasn't about to die. But really, for $300,v this isn't a bad device, except for the camera. Hoping to see more development for this. I haven't but a rom in years, but was thinking about doing it again. Need more options!
It may not exactly answer your doubt but the network bars are not true indicator of the signal reception.
Check the network strength in Settings ->About Phone -> Status -> SIM status.
Less negative means more powerful signal. You can compare the signal receptions of the phones this way.

Hello and thank you for your reply. Here is a screenshot. It seems to have -84. The Moto G5+ would have the needle slightly better around -76 and the Wifi one completely to the right. It seems less strong than the G5+. Though what I mainly have been looking at the battery stats of G5S+ where it shows yellow being yellow for a long time or just alternating, while the G5+ would be green the entire time. It also seems to stay yellow when my screen is off for a while. Do you think this is a fixable through updates problem?
Mine is also unstable. It can goes from 4 bar to 0-2 bar in a blink. I checked with LTE discovery, it is even funnier, -89dbm 1 bar, -84dbm 3bar and it goes to 1 bar, then -88dbm 3 bar. I don't even know what the programmed range for each bar anymore.
It seems like this is quite common, even at Lenovo Moto forums, there are a lot of thread complaining about this problem.
Funny thing is the direct rival of this, the MiA1, also suffered this and partially fixed the problem with a patch last month so finger crossed that this is fixable by patching. Maybe you guys should also flood that forums as well or flood the moto email support.

I know that this thread is dated but I am VERY frustrated with the cell signal on my moto G+. I have had it since 11/17 and have been dealing with VERY POOR cell reception. We are in an area where there is little signal. We installed a cell booster and that gives a small signal on most phones, but my moto G+ is less likely to get or keep a signal. Hubby has Moto ext that is about 3 years old and he always has a better signal then me. I love the phone, but all the bells and whistles mean nothing if you cant gat a signal. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Really poor signal.
I also have this problem. Thought it was just me. I can't use it at all inside most buildings, and even outside my g5s+ often looses signal all together.
I have the same problem. I just moved to another city, inside my house (poor signal zone) i am having zero bars. I though it was the zone but a friend of mine has 3 bars, same operator but another phone.
Network problem
When I am install the stock ROM after using custom ROM my mobile network show emergency calls network are not present what I will do my phone is moto g5s plus Indian variant
have you solved? tips?

Sim Signal reception battery drain

Hello.
I have noticed that mi9 has weak antenna or something is going bad. Previously I was using OnePlus 5t and I haven't noticed any significant battery drain from signal reception. Now in battery stats signal takes most of the time 1st place on the list of battery usage.
I was trying to figure out something with *#*#4636#*#* in dialer but I haven't found anything suspicious other than Sim 2 was even though not used seems like it's trying to connect to antennas.
Any time I am in "2 bars" or less on any of the phones I have had I notice significant battery drain from signal.
That said, the Mi 9 seems to have better signal reception than my roommates old iPhone or her new Pixel 3. There are areas with bad LTE coverage and I can often maintain LTE when she cannot, and I typically have higher cell signal strength.
I have week signal reception on 4G compared with my other devices on the same sim and in cases where I am in spots/places with weak 4G coverage it changes to 3G although my other device remain in 4G.
I have tested against some more devices but always MI 9 is weaker.
I can force it to keep the 4G with "LTE only" option but that's not really a solution.
