Help needed: BMW iDrive/Connected App useless with P20 Pro - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello everyone. I've switched from an S6 Edge+ with android 7.1.1 (that showed the Playlists from Spotify on the car infotainment system and connected to the car via the BMW Connected App). Now, all of the functionality is absent on the P20 Pro L29 C432 Germany. I must change the Bluetooth music from the phone (which can be quite dangerous), can't interact with the car via its app, can't interact with the car via USB.
Does somebody have any advice?
PS- Firmware Finder finds the 120 (not available for my IMEI) 107B (available for installation), but none of the 2 methods available inside the app seem to work. I really wish to update in the hopes that it will make the phone work with my car (and improve the awful camera (for my tastes) )

No issues in our Nissan connect fine music no issues with Deezer all controlled by head or steering wheel ... Do connect by Bluetooth

Everything working fine here in my BMW with P20 Pro (connected via BT):
No problems whatsoever with BT-Audiostreaming and Connected App also works as intended.

I'm glad that your systems behave as intended. At least I know that this is a particular case. I will try Deezer to see if it makes a difference. Maybe Spotify is to blame.
But there still remains the BMW Connected App, that can't interact with my car ?

Cannot play music via Bluetooth Hyundai I35

Hello,
I own a Hyundai I35 2014,
I have the phone connected via Bluetooth, and i can make and receive calls just fine, all is loud and clear.
But it will not play Music (not from YouTube, not from google Music) when i hit AD2P
I checked some forums and other sites, i tried unpairing, i tried force stop and remove data and clear cache, i tried to do almost anything - nothing worked.
i also do not have the "Media Audio" option under options in Bluetooth device properties (when you click the round icon next to the car device name) - but also ,
My brother has LG G3 (android 5.0) and he is ABLE to play music just fine - He also do not have the "Media Audio" option in bluetooth device properties.
Both phones properties look the same, but only the LG G3 is playing music once AD2P is chosen in the Car.
any help would be much appreciated.
thanks !
Sounds like a vehicle issue - most phones will not stream audio to a device which doesn't present it with the A2DP profile. Maybe you need to master reset your car's stereo or check with the dealership for a stereo FW update.
Ford just recently released an updated firmware for Sync and now I get mp3 metadata on the display and it auto-reconnects to BT after shutting the truck off.
I`v actually done that, but how can i blame the car when my brother's LG G3 works great with it, and my Wife's iPhone 6Plus works great as well ?
Just from a quick Google search it seems the bluetooth in that car (I'm gonna assume you have a Hyundai ix35, since no "i35" exists) is flaky and problematic.
I would call the dealer and ask if there's a system update to fix BT issues.
I've had an ongoing issue with my Pioneer head unit where it will stop working with Media Playback and continue to connect for call audio. Each time it does this I have to clear the Bluetooth memory on my Pioneer unit. Perhaps your Hyundai has a similar option? They you can repair the device and it should work.
Edit: I should add that this was never an issue with my previous 2 phones (a Samsung Captivate and Nexus 4).

Possible to use a Bluetooth Headset with Android Auto?

Hello,
I just purchased and installed a Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. So far it's pretty slick. I'll be using it with my Galaxy S6.
I noticed that when I try to disable the Call Audio Bluetooth profile from the phone side, it re-enables itself... like I HAVE to use the NEX for call audio.
I would like to be able to turn on my BT headset and use that instead, without much hassle. There are definitely times where I'll be in the car with other people and don't want the whole car to hear the conversation. It also presents a call quality issue with the far end being able to hear the system speakers.
Do I have to unplug USB from the NEX to make this work?

I have same unit, try having headset connected before plugging in your phone. That may work

I'm bumping this up. With my previous phone (LG V10) I could select which device use to make phone calls, Android Auto device or a bluetooth headset (Plantronics). Now with a Oneplus 3T that is not possible anymore.
AA automatically rerouting "BT phone" to main AA device. That is really annoying.
If someone knows a workaround to this please give advice, thanks...
You have to have it enabled, in a nutshell the unit (Pioneer) declares that it has bluetooth capabilities and declares the bluetooth mac address when it initialize the connection, than Android Auto (trough Google Play Services which is a system app) will enable the bluetooth, set up a pairing if it doesn't exist and connect to it, so no matter what you do it will always connect to it, the only way to "avoid" this is:
a) Get another phone which connects to the Pioneer bluetooth, then connect the phone (haven't tried this, but probably will do the trick)
b) Alter the pioneer unit so it doesn't send the bluetooth mac and it doesn't declare the bluetooth service (almost impossible, you will need to replace the app on the unit)

Compatibility with Android Auto

Is there someone who could test the compatibility of the P20 Pro extensively with Android Auto? I suspect the general incompatibility (waze, Google music, in call screen,...) of the Mate 10 Pro is still not solved and till now not one review pays attention to this glaring issue. Curious if Huawei has solved this problem with this new phone.

Interesting. I'll listen here before buying, because I use Android Auto quite a bit, so if it doesn't work it's a no go for me.
Unfortunately the first feedback reports the same incompatibility as with the Mate 10 Pro.

I'm having issues connecting the phone to the head unit now with the android 8.1. It is telling me that there is a error code of communication error 6
This is diabolical, for such a basic functionality!!!
I am awaiting delivery of my P20 Pro, and was literally 5 minutes away from ordering an Android Auto headunit!
You have just saved me a lot of money... thanks!
Hopefully more people on here will be able to test.
For me, the only thing that doesn't work is Play Music. The progress bar moves but there's no sound. BBC iPlayer Radio and TuneIn Radio both work fine. No problems with Maps and phone.
It's poor at best, if you get it working leave it and don't touch anything.
Had a trip in partners Ford Focus - Sync 3 head unit, works fine with Pixel 2XL/XZ1 Compact but this just either didn't want to play anything or when attempting to read a message would give the error "voice commands not available at the moment" same when attempting to use voice commands as well. Once I did get it playing music and maps I just left it as I didn't want to break anything but still no voice commands available.
Looks like Google will be making Android Auto fully compatible with the P20 Pro. Looks like our phone is a big enough launch from Huawei to attract attention from them.

I'm using a P20 Pro. I have been using android auto in my golf now and everything seems to work fine. The only issues I am having are that I can make calls, but I can't see the phone call on the screen which means I have to use the steering wheel to hangup. When someone rings me I can't see it on my. Infotainment screen. Also can't see all of my contacts. Only my most recent. Hopefully there is a fix coming for this

Just received my P20 Pro yesterday, and just like my all previous Huawei phones (P9, P10, Mate 10 Pro) - it works with AA fine enough (only issue - call screen is not being shown).
It's barely usable...
Well it's my first Huawei phone (coming from an S8) and I'm a big fan of AA probably because of Waze...
Here are my remarks:
- Google Maps works from time to time
- Waze doesn't work at all, I have a black screen
- and for the audio it's impossible to switch between the apps and there's no audio
So unless you're using Google Maps extensively, I don't see why you'd use the P20 Pro with AA.
For those who are thinking how it was with an S8, well it was kind of a all or nothing experience. I've had periods where the phone wouldn't connect to AA and suddenly start working again.
I have also noticed that the cable quality is very important.
Android auto working fine for me. Only issue is the phone charges very slowly when connected. My one plus used to charge much quicker when connected to car head unit
Hello I've P20 and vw sportvan, no map (waze or Google maps)... I've black screen. No sound when I want to use Google music... I hope Huawei make something to solve this....
I have AA in a Pioneer headunit, working with a P20 Pro, I get audio issues with Google Play Music, waze works fine...
Got a P20 Pro and Android auto is working perfect in my Volkswagen Passat GTE. Been using it daily and everything works fine for me including Waze and Spotify

Doesnt Work
Pioneer X8800BT headunit worked flawlessly with Sony Xperia Z5 Premium so it's not the headunit.
Waze worked for a hour or so with audio then this became a black screen. Google play music "plays" but no sound comes out. In the end I had to unplug the phone from headunit (which I paid good money for) and use the unit as a dumb bluetooth speaker while using Waze directly off the phone...
I think I'll be returning it and getting a Pixel 2 XL unless someone can give me hope that there is work being done to solve this? I don't want to root it just yet because my credit card / banking apps stop working.
Shame as it's an otherwise excellent phone - but this is a deal breaker for me.
From my point of view is essential to have a quality USB cable. Everything (Waze, Google maps, call screen) works seemly with original cable delivered with charger. With another cable work call screen only, Waze and Google maps shows black screen. With cheap USB cabel my mobil phone (Huawei P20 PRO) doesnt connect to car (Hyundai i30 2018).
yesterday an AA update hit the play store. anyone tried after that?

Yes, no substantial changes...

Car Bluetooth Audio Metadata Issues

I have just got my P20 Pro, it seems like a great phone so far, but I have one nagging issue.
When I connect my phone to my car's (2015 BMW 3 Series) Bluetooth the now playing metadata of the audio being played is not being passed correctly. So if I play audio from Google Play Music or Pocketcasts the head unit on my car will show either Unknown Track or the track data of the first item on the album or the playlist. The audio itself sounds fine and I am able to skip tracks, select new albums from the car's controls, so it seems some information is being passed correctly, it is just that the info of the track that is currently playing seems to not be working.
Has anyone else encountered this?
At this point I have to assume it is the phone, as my Galaxy S6, S7 & S8's all worked, but I guess it is technically possible that could have been a workaround put in by BMW as they were such popular phones. Hopefully Huawei will sort this out, it may be an underlying Oreo issue as threads like this suggest that Bluetooth issues were around when 8.0 launched https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/E9Q2lyFYRgI
I have done some more digging on this issue and I suspect that is might be something to do with the Bluetooth AVRCP version that the phone is using. Normally in Android (since 8.0) you could adjust the AVRCP version from within Developer Options, but for some reason this is not available on this phone. My Galaxy S8 was using AVRCP 1.4, so I suspect that this phone is using 1.5 or 1.6 and my car does not like it.
I have emailed Huawei to ask for clarification. At this point it is the only real issue I have with the phone, but it will annoy me if it isn't resolved quickly. I'm going to pester BMW too to see what versions of AVRCP they officially support.
Don't have these issues in the car, head display current track etc via Bluetooth ... Use this in a Nissan
Everything works as it should with my Pioneer headunit using Spotify
I just posted something related (possibly) in the RAM/Battery Management thread - I have issues with the Audi MMI Connect app, losing connectivity and so on.....does seem that the P20 Pro handles Bluetooth (no rsap?) and background process management quite differently to my previous phone (Galaxy S8+)....also hoping quick resolution, as love the phone!
Search facility not working in car
Hi
I've just put music onto my P20 pro and it plays fine on the device and the car, however, I can't use the search facility on the car (BMW, 3 series, 2017) to change track. I can do this on the phone. Any suggestions? I put the music onto the 'Music' app (dragged and dropped from my iTunes folder- don't know if this is relevant. Any help would be greatly appreciated as without being able to use the car's search facility and come in and out of albums/ artists is useless. Should I have put the music into somewhere else?

P20 PRO and BMW - bluetooth issue
Bojanglez, did you find a solution? I got the same issue with P20 PRO and BMW X4... so it seems a problem linked to that phone connected to the BMW multimedia system.
With my previous phone, an ASUS Zenfone, everything was fine.
It may be a BMW issue to, maby P20 pro isn't compatible with BMW or Audi. I know that some manufacturers put all in to be compatible with ios and some larger manufacturers of phones. It could be that car manufacturers don't test Huawei phones and don't support them.

No Huawei Garbage bloatware issue, my is random something is normal, most times it plays music but gets stuck on providing music playing info.
Same issue here with my 2016 Toyota rav4. It plays the first track and shows the metadata but then as the tracks keep playing the metada remains the one of the first song. Definitely an issue with Huawei. Their music player works just fine. I think it has to do with the poor Google integration and their need to force that half baked apple wanna be emui down our throats. It should be Oreo but looks and feels like gingerbread.
Hi all, I have an update. I have resolved the issue, but not quite sure which of the following specifically fixed it.
Huawei software update
Renamed by phone in Bluetooth settings
Updated to the latest BMW firmware (from their site)
Messed with some of the Bluetooth settings in Developer Options on the phone
Unfortunately I did all these at pretty much the same time so I can't say for certain which one fixed it, I think it was the Huawei software update as after I updated my BMW firmware I still had the same issue and also in other BMWs I tried. I also noticed that the Bluetooth was dropping constantly in my wife's Puegeot 3008 so that's why I played with the Developer Options. For anyone interested I havethe following now set:
Codec: SBC
sample rate: 44.1khz
channel mode: Stereo
LDAC playback quality: 990kbps/909kbps (optimised for connectivity quality)
HWA playback quality: Best effort (400KB Optimised for connectivity)
HWA Latency: 50-100ms
So I now have track information and basic controls using Google Play Music and Pocketcasts. It does not seem to like letting me browse my library though, but it is at least functional.
Also I changed my car, this was not because the BT didn't work It worked in my 2015 3 series before I changed it. I now have a 2018 4 series and the behaviour is the same, track listing and skip functionality but no browsing.
I have installed the most recent firmware update on my 2 Series 2017, I see two fundamental issues. One is, by using your phone normally, no issues should arise most of the time but still random sync issues with metadata can occur. The second issue is, no matter how good your phone behave and how well synchronized the metadata is, once you open Android Auto app, everything goes to hell and you are back in square one.
To fix it, you should deactivate auto start when connected in the app (or not using it at all), erase your car from devices in bluetooth config within your phone. Erase your phone from the list in your car. Change the phone name. Start over with the synching process. Check for correct metadata in the car. If not working repeat. That should fix the problem eventually.
If you like very Android Auto very much, get used to see the songs information in your phone screen rather than the car.
I am also having the same problem, Huawei P20 Pro and Sony XAV-601BT head unit. I've tried enabling all the permissions in Spotify, cycling the connections, renaming the phone.
i have Pixel 3xl with Android 10, - Bluetooth connects fine there is no metadata - song info. this problem started with 8.1 Android version and I have not been able to get it to work. I really cant believe google cant fix this issue or even aware of it. plenty of threads on google. I think they all use Iphone, i am guessing ...this is very annoying. I have change the avrcp version from 1.4 to 1.6. no luck, also I read that turn off battery optimization on Bluetooth. no luck. anyone else here having similar issue??

Wireless Android Auto For Dummies...

After I upgraded my Nexus 6 to LOS 18.1, I discovered that Android Auto is included in the necessary package MindTheGapps. I am able to use AA via USB cable in my car (Hyunday i10/2017) and I am beginning to like it. Controlling the music player is so much better in the car's big screen!
I tried to establish a wireless connection using Bluetooth, because the AA app on my phone offers that option, but I can not make that connection, and I am beginning to think I might have a problem of understanding this technique. So I would appreciate a bit of help and explanation here.
Without the cable, just using BT, I am able to select people in the address book and make phone calls. The control buttons on the steering wheel also working perfectly: take calls, hang up, volume control. I guess this is some sort of typical old school free hand phone call protocol.
Also, when on BT, I get minimum control over the phone's music player with the steering wheel buttons, *after* I started the player on the phone's screen: next/previous track, volume control.
When I plug in the USB cable, AA starts and I get full control over the music player using my car's entertainmane screen: I can dig around in artists and albums list, and I can do any thing I can do on the phone's screen.
As said before: the AA app belonging to the MtG package offers to connect AA through BT, and I very much would like a galvanic separation between my car and my phone. But I can not make it work that way.
So, my question is: am I on the wrong track there? Does AA over BT work at all? Or do I need to make a wifi connection? What conditions need to be fitted on the phone, the LOS version, the GAPSS version and the car?
Many thanks in advance!
Wireless AA uses WiFi, you can not do AA with just BT. Your car does not support Wireless AA. You can connect via USB and use AA (it will use BT, too), or you can connect wireless with just BT, without AA.
Thanks!
I was totally confused there, because the AA app in LOS offers wireless connection to the car using BT. If I am getting it right now, that option only applies to streaming phone calls and music to the car.
Wouldn't it be better to label that option otherwise?
