For those with XZ2, is the camera capable of doing portrait shots? - Sony Xperia XZ2 Questions & Answers

With the background blur?
I know it only has 1 camera at the back but the Pixel 2 XL manages to do it quite perfectly with 1 camera.

Yes with bokeh setting in camera

I'd say it's far from perfect. It kind of works, sometimes, but I've previously had a Xiaomi Mi 6 which did a better job. But even the best dual camera system is... meh. Get a real camera with a decent lens.

Front cam is samsung s5k5e8 5mp
Back primary camera - OV12A10 12mp
Back secondary camera - OV13880 13mp
Xiaomi lied here, both back camera aren't same but 12mp and 13mp, and they have limited 13mp sensor to 12mp. also crippled fps to 28. it doesn't record videos at solid 30fps.

For camera ? stay away from this crap. it's worse than Redmi 3s. i tried modded gcam with hdr+ on both phones and redmi 3s simply ****s on this so called flagship camera. feeling cheated by Xiaomi.
There is a video in YouTube which shows 2x zoom working even if the secondary camera lens is blocked. Seems they are only using a single camera and the telephoto one is fake. Anyone pls confirm.

Well color me surprised!! Just tested this, and you're kind of right when the Camera is in normal mode and you press the 1X or 2X button it zooms in AND takes pictures using the normal (primary) lens. However when entering manual mode the zoom lens does actually work and can also be covered.
This seems to be a bug in the camera software as it sometimes does use the 2X camera instead of the 1X camera. However i am on MIUI9 could anyone test this on MIUI8?

I don't think so its a bug.... In low lighting or less optimal conditions... It doesn't use telephoto lens to avoid degradation of image quality
This was in daylight, that should be wel above optimal lighting conditions. Could still be correct though but that would be a less then desired behaviour if you ask me.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I'm really happy with the photo quality on this phone, it's pretty good for the price (and in case anyone is wondering, yes, it's better than the Note 5 Pro). I'm satisfied with it but I still can't wait for someone to bring the Pixel Camera to this device, I'm sure it could improve the picture quality even more.
Photo Quality after latest update to 10.0.5 is reduced a lot...
Is there any solution on this?

I don't know about teh software upgrade, but if you look at the review of the Note 6 Pro in GSM Arena, go to 5.Camera and open the "photo compare tool", and select the Redmi Note 5 AI for comparison, the picture quality is much better than the Note 6.
The camera is supposed to be the same, but Note 6 seems to have excessive noise reduction and much less detail.
Anybody knows why?

I'm running latest MIUI software versions and the daylight quality shots with stock camera is excellent.
The night shot quality could be improved when compared with GCam.
Regards,
Photo quality is good, but I do not see as many details as with my previous J7 2015 (when I zoom in). But the overall image quality is much better (real colors, good lighting) .
I am disappointed with the camera cause the Mi A2 has better camera.

Hi
I have enabled cam2api with root (magisk) on a custom ROM (lineageos 17) and I cannot find a camera app that uses the full capacity of the phone cameras. I only get one 12MP on the rear camera and one 5MP on the front camera. I used gcam, open cam, lineageos snap...
Normally (on stock MIUI) it's a dual 12MP and 5MP cameras on the front and dual 20MP and 2MP cameras on the rear.
Does anyone know how to get the full capacity of the phone's cameras without going back to MIUI global ?

I think you said it otherwise: RN6Pro has on front a 20MP main and 2MP lens to depth and on rear, 12MP and 5MP lens.
I am using the Official 20200602 Lineage OS build and i can take photos with:
- The snap camera on rear can be shot with 20MP resolution and the front with 5MP.
- The Miui flashalble zip camera for android 10 can reach full resolution, but lack of front camera on manual mode.

Hi, I also have the official lineageos and tried to flash the canera after mounting system and vendor in TWRP but the app doesn't work. I don't know where I went wrong
*EDIT*
Actually it's working, I had to authorise access to camera in the properties
I'm still using the stock camera on stock ROM. Couldn't enable api2 as any attempts to unlock my bootloader have failed. I like the photo quality better than my wife's new 9 Pro Max. MP difference aside, there is less visible noise in 6 pro vis-a-vis 9 Pro Max. Same applies to selfie camera as well.
However, I do like the macro camera of 9 Pro max, and wish there was night mode on 6 Pro as well. Mi could just enable camera 2 API out of the box, but chooses not to for some reason.
Redmi note 6 pro image quality
The image quality is quite good. In this low budget price range Note 6 pro giving such good quality images. But after the latest update, the image quality is reduced. Idk it only happens to me or every Redmi Note 6 pro user will face this issue!!

P30 Pro or Pixel 3XL?

Hi all, I have the chance to get the P30 Pro for a bargain price but I am wondering if it would be better than my Pixel 3 XL that I owned for almost an year now. I am mostly tempted by the better battery and RAM but I am worried that I wont like the quality of pictures from the P30 Pro as much as the Pixel's ones. Did anyone make the change from Pixel 3 XL to P30 Pro? If so, do you find the P30 Pro a better phone? Thank you.
Okay, the P30 Pro is way better in almost every aspect. That's for the camera and the rest of the phone too. Main camera has almost double the sensor size. So you'll get better images in the dark without night mode. Plus you have super wide angle (16mm full frame) and Tele (135 mm full frame) which is missing with the Pixel. The only aspect which is better in Pixel Cams is the Selfie Cam. Please check dxo smartphone: Pixel 3 is 20th place with 103 points regarding photo, P30 Pro is 6th place with 125 photo points. The P30 Pro is one of the Top Smartphones in 2019. Pixel 3 is a device of yesterday, sorry.

How Will The Pixel 5 Camera be better than the Pixel 4? It's the Same Camera!

If the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 have the exact same camera, how can the Pixel 5 possibly give better results?
The Snapdragon in the 4 is much faster than the one in the 5, so computational photography should give an edge to the 4.
Will Google just reserve some proprietary algorithms for the 5? Or is there a secret graphics chip in the 5 that I haven't heard about?
They added a wide angle lense to the 5 as far as I've read.

Same main sensor, but a wide angle instead of a zoom.
All of the software tricks should make their way to the P4, either through updates or via Cstark
If your only reason for upgrading is the camera then it's not worth it. The only reason I can think of to go from the Pixel 4 to the Pixel 5 is the bigger battery and getting the fingerprint sensor back.
I pre-ordered my Pixel 5 this morning but I'm coming from a Pixel 2 XL.

I'm glad you said this. I just got the pixel 4 and love it. I don't care for the wide angle lense. The bigger battery would be nice but I get great battery life from my P4. I think I'll stick with the 4 until the 6 comes out.

I don't really care about the wide angle either. I'd much rather have the telephoto. I liked that the Pixel 4 had that but the way too small battery on both the Pixel 4 XL and especially the smaller Pixel 4 and the face unlock were deal breakers for me so I stuck with my Pixel 2 XL another year.

Yes I rode my Pixel 2 XL for as long as I could but some of the apps I used responded to slowly on the GP2XL. I handed it down to my daughter. I love the pixel 4 and the face unlock is awesome. I will say that I got tired of carrying around a big cell phone in the 2xl. So the P4 is a perfect fit.
Having got a pixel 5 and 4xl I naturally compared some photos.
Pixel 5 seems to get white balance right more.
HOWEVER when you pixel peep right into a photo I find the 4xl shots have fractionally more detail rendered.
For example a tree on the horizon has more branches clearly defined on the 4xl
Text on a sign in the background or on books on a shelf are less blurred on the 4xl too.
Video is a bit better. Telephoto is handy but the quality isn't as good as the main camera. It also doesn't save at 16mp but 12mp.
For normal photos for me it's the same thing no matter the Pixel gen I use.
But already know this personal opinion before purchasing them
Sent from my Pixel 5 using Tapatalk
Well for me I notice some fractional changes from model to model.
The pixel 5 however isn't producing quite as detailed shots as my 4xl when looking closely. Side by side it's identical until you pixel peep at the details.
The ultra wide isn't that good either. Tends to lack details and colour accuracy compared with the main camera.
The zoom is no way near as good as the 4xl.
In the end pixel 4 users be warned to consider not to 'upgrade' for the camera.
I'm waiting for the 6 and hope they upgrade the camera hardware.

General My father bought the S21 Ultra and i was impressed camera wise...

This is just my statement and opinion.
I'm going to try and be honest here. Me as a Mi 11 Ultra owner I was impressed and a bit jealous despite the 300-400€ difference when using my father's S21 Ultra(exynos) in 2 aspects.
One is the screen brightness with direct sunlight. i thought the all 1700nits would "shine true" but i got duped. The visibility of the S21 Ultra is much better, both using max brightness sunlight. I am not sure if Xiaomi activated the already enabled direct sunlight option, i had read somewhere that the brightness reaches better results on S21U but that's another topic.
Two is the camera...
I got mind blown when i bought the mi 11 Ultra and i got mind blown again about the quality of the zoom on S21U, without even going past 10x.
The S21U with the 3x and 10x camera app smooth change between lenses and the sharpness of the zoom photos during live preview. A more Mature camera app indeed and the stabilization of the zoom camera by focusing on the object and not having to have a firm hand... wow!
I couldn't test it during nightshots cause i was with him for a brief moment, but that is what i could have "won" in a way, but Mi11U enhances the nightshots photos after the photo is taken, not that much during live preview.
Not to discourage other Xiaomi Fans out there but Xiaomi has indeed been lacking the transparency and focus of the Software.
Samsung July patch notes note said that was made some improvements to the camera performance
Another thing is that Xiaomi MIUI patches notes are the same across all the devices and not specific of the model. Like generic and uninteresting, you don't even know if they are making adjustments to the camera app on a specific model.
But i'm going to stop with all the blathering for now.
What is your goal with this post? What do you want to tell us? The camera of the Mi11 Ultra is far above the camera of the S21, regarding to DXOMark.

In the same test you see the display of the S21u scoring higher then the Mi11 Ultra. So yes, you are right.
Everyone has his/hers own reasons to buy a specific phone. I dont like Samsung for its UI and i dont like the esthetics of the S21u. Maybe you do, so buy a S21u?

You have to read the carefully the post i made mate.
I said on top, its my opinion that S21U is better at zoom, even if DXOmark biases or unbiases only grants 98 points against 131.
Benchmarks are benchmarks and DXOmark has a controversy of favoring Huawei and Xiaomi phones (you can read it in other places) and also Software improvements are not taken in consideration. The software released of S21Ultra had alot of issues but they fixed according to what i know and this topic was made now cause my father only bought it now.
Beside i don't look at one site and be done with it. You see alot of Youtubers talk about zoom pictures being better on S21Ultra
Also do you wonder why DXOmark never shares the specific version number of the software they test even if you ask them? talk about transparency...
And again with the Dxomark scores on Screen. Xiaomi talks about 1700nits against the Samsung 1500nits and yet i saw major difference with my eyes.
I bought the Mi11ultra because i love MIUI and this phone has alot of other functionally that other don't all in one.
I won't buy S21U. i already have purchase my device, this is a post to take in consideration, thats all.
I'm not in blind love of my MI11ultra.

Let's hope Xiaomi will release better software soon or custom roms to fix it. And well, when i have a S21U in my own hands i will compare them.

I don't know guys what kind of shots you need to do with a camera, Mi 11 Ultra camera to me seems incredible and that's enough, if I want better shot I buy a proper camera in my opinion
In my little and personal opinion, Xiaomi fits outstanding hardware in its phones but it clearly loses on software and optimization which I think is a more difficult task than gathering hardware. If Samsung would ship its phone with the kind of sensors Mi 11 ultra has, they might outperform Mi 11 ultra easily. Even Xiaomi's flagships such as Mi 11 ultra have outdated security updates and buggy user interface such as its dark mode; I'm living with a phone whose dark mode bugs make me change homescreen icon layout twice daily in order to get my widgets and google feed follow the device's theme. Mind it, I payed $1000 for this "luxury" and such is the experience of it. I envy S21 ultra users using their phones with the most recent Android security patch installed.
Im sorry if I hurt someone here by saying this.
I debated a lot between the two phone. Went with Xiaomi because :
1. I can use gcam (the camera will improve with time). This is not available with the Exynos S21, or very limited.
2. Better wide angle lens.
What i really miss, and in my opinion it's the biggest flaw with the Mi 11 Ultra camera: Macro. Basically doesn't exist. What is even worse is the fact that cropping from the main lens at 50MP yields much better macro results that using the dedicated macro mode. I mean...common Xiaomi.
So I bought an external 100mm macro lens, but it doesn't fit the M11U because the camera bump is too thick :/

Now that you meantion I also tried experimenting with "macro" cause the option is there and its on the Ultrawide and it can't seem to focus, i get better results with telescope lens while keeping some distance from target. but still lacks.
Xiaomi said that they didn't place a macro camera cause they found a way to use 2 lens into 1, the Ultrawide.
I wonder if gcam has a option to improve focus on the ultrawide and if it's only xiaomi camera software that it's not working properly.

You're limited by the focal range of the lense.
A ultra wide macro would likely need an attachment ie extension tube/lense for it to work. Because you don't have access to the primary lense not sure how well that work.

True, but the silly thing is that you can just take a photo with the main lens and 50MP mode and crop. You still get high res photo and the macro is FAR better than what you get with the dedicated macro mode.
They should just change the dedicated macro mode to be a crop of 50MP main camera.

It will do that if the distance is closer than the minimum focus distance of the 5x lens, or when there is not a lot of light. You can always change to Pro mode (with auto settings); to force the 5x lens .
