icons with frame - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hello,
Just upgraded to the note 8 and I can't seem to have the icons without the frame.
On my old s7 edge I had the option to have my icons with or without the frames.... Now on my note 8 the option is greyed out
Please help.

That's not true....on my girlfriends s9+ she has the option and it works... She can apply the frames or remove them.... And she has the same os as mine.

Switch to the stock launcher first and it will no longer be greyed out.

Didn't work for me. I switched back to stock launcher and the option is still greyed out.

After a reboot it becomes available. At least for me it does.

Ok thanks. I just tried again with a reboot but still no change. Must be something else involved.
Might be a shot in the dark, but I'm wondering if it's somehow CSC-related too. I don't really see why it would be, but I've noticed other menu options can be different, greyed out, or altogether missing depending on which CSC I use (e.g. emergency alert settings and defaults vary by CSC, gif keyboard is missing on some CSCs like XSG, etc.).

If ever you are on Nova, you can also force the legacy icons in the Nova Labs settings. This will get rid of all the frames.

Are you guys using themes?
Try using stock (default) theme.
I noticed on mine is greyed out too with custom theme applied but with stock theme I can change it.

Yeah but the fact that frames still show up on icons even though I choose to have the icons without the frames....
Do I need to install another maybe an older version of Samsung experience launcher?

Yes, but I just tried switching back to stock theme and nothing changed. Even after a reboot the option is still greyed out.

That's weird.
You'll can try clearing the Samsung experience home data and cache but this will reset all your home screens back to the way you bought the phone.
Or go to recovery and clearing cache
Worst case scenario do a factory reset.
Try applying default theme
Optional clear data and cache of Samsung experience home (this will reset launcher back to stock)(try without this step first and see)
Go to device maintenance and clearing the storage
Restart phone and see.
This way it will remove any left over themes

APK for reverting back to black NavBar

Hey,
I used this on my S8 Plus, and tried it on my Note 8 and it works too. It adds the option for a black navbar back in the Display > Navigation Bar settings. Just install the APK, reboot and head into the settings to turn it on.

Wonder why they removed it. Did they want to avoid screen burn in with this model?
Yea was remove due to burn in or wash out

Thank you much for this, it was driving me nuts and all other colors are lame and are not consistent with a blacked-out theme.
Much appreciated!
Nevermind, the option was blacked out due to black theme. Thanks!
Not seeing where you turn this on. No option in the Navbar settings.

Seems to have odd permission requirements? Not sure why it needs to access the phone, or alter SD contents?

Dang, I really wanted to use this but now I wont way too paranoid.
Thanks, it works. Navbar was my go to, but it was not working very good with immersive mode + when keyboard appeared.
Works great!
Why does it need access to the sd card?

See if this one does, I don't believe it did. If it does it's probably because that's where you have it stored prior to installation.

I can confirm it ask for SD card and Phone permissions, both versions uploaded here in the thread. I went ahead and disabled the permissions and seems to work fine still, even after a restart. Still odd to ask for phone permissions tho

Install and go to settings if you are using a black theme already you might not see the Dark bubble in those color list, just press the last dark spot.

I'm using sd_black from samsung theme store with parts and pieces of several substratum themes and several different layers.
Works on mine once theme controls for Nav bar were turned off.

If you have another launcher installed & have it set as default, perhaps you can't access the stock home screen settings.
If that's not the case, maybe try using Nova Launcher & use the shortcut/activities option & see if you can access the settings for that.

AOD doesn't show?

Just updated to Pie (official AT&T) and seems ok thus far, except my AOD clock doesn't show. I tried changing styles, but all I get is just a black screen. Anyone else having this issue?
Try wiping the Cache Partition in Recovery Mode. If that doesn't work then back up the data stored on your device and perform a Hard
Factory Reset.

That's was it exactly! I hate it when they change default options as the result of an upgrade.

one ui 2.0 new Google navigation gestures not available

I updated my phone today but the option for the gesture navigation option stays grey and I can't get into the menu. I want to use this nice looking and smoothly working Google bar that I've seen in the beta one ui 2.0 Videos. Is it just for me like this or are there more people with the same problem... Really don't want to reset my phone. I already reseted my settings
It freezes right? Its still updating. After a reboots ita back to normal

Select full screen gestures (the second option of your screenshot) and go on "other options" (the button immediately under it), from here you can choose Google gestures. ?

The more option tab stays grey, I deleted cache and restarted the phone so many time already. Don't know what it is. Before the update I had a lot of unnecessary apps disabled with adhell. After the update my multitasking window wouldn't open no matter what. After uninstalling adhell it worked again. There could be a connection but I don't know which it it
Samsung seems to of broken something there. It is good news for me for whenever my carrier updates my S10+ to Android 10 as I don't like the gesture crap at all.

On Reddit there is and adb command to get it work, but didnt on mine. I used lawnchair, but Samsung one is raster imo.
In Nova Launcher settings there's a message that the new gestures aren't supposed to work with third party launchers, cause Google implemented a barrier for this in Android 10's source code which checks if the launcher is a system.app or not. Maybe it works on rooted phone with systemized Nova.

That’s a shame... Would love to use Google-style gestures with the Rootless Pixel Launcher.

Rooting does nothing. But the new security patch allows for it to work on pixel phones, check xda news, we’ll eventually get it

Got a link? I'm on Lawnchair too.
On Nova's Discord they said that this won't happen on Nova and even with Lawn chair it doesn't work for everyone. We just can hope and wait...but I have to admit that I tried the old and the new gestures for a couple of days but switched back to the classic navbar because it's easier if using just one hand and also when the phone is mounted in my car.
I'm using Nova and it's fine

You could try following the tutorial here:

It seems to work for me, but has to be redone after a reboot...
Unfortunally it's too glitchy!

Question Task Changer/Manager Alternatives?

Coming from Oxygen, there's still a lot of visual stuff I dislike about One UI, though I will say, it's FAR better than the last Samsung I used which ran TouchWiz.
Running Nova and Theme Park to get things looking/running the way I generally prefer.
The one last piece that I really dislike but can't find a complete solution for is the Task Manager. I have Home Up running, but the part that annoys me is the Recent App shortcuts. They appear to be randomly generated, and the icons are horrific and cartoony. I just don't like it.
Is there an alternative or way to just turn the recent app shortcuts off? Screenshot attached for clarity.
Home up, task changer, disable "hide search bar"
Enter recents, three dots menu in search bar, settings, disable "show recommended apps"
Now you can hide search bar again

I actually discovered that RIGHT as I got a notification of your reply.
Big thanks for chiming in.
While I still generally think One UI < Oxygen, with enough tweaks, I can deal.
Question for you OP. How'd you get home up working while using Nova. None of the settings seem to stick when changing task manager using goodlock homeup when move is set to default.

there is a recent update to One UI Home that fixed that issue for me with lawnchair.
if youre not getting it through samsung, you can sideload it from here: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsu...rience-home-touchwiz-home-12-1-05-11-release/
you also may or may not have to update home up.

Thanks that worked! Looking clean now. I also hated the suggested apps at the bottom. I use a higher dpi and that was not affected by the dpi change. So it looked even worse on my phone. They looked huge compared to everything else.

Hi there
I was wondering if there is any way to apply the new homeup with the task changer on one ui 2.5 or any other good lock plugins for that matter
Samsung is only updating them for android 11 and was really hoping to get them on my phone
BTW I have a note 9 so no updates for me
