Ask Any Questions - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

So instead of making separate threads, I thought it might be helpful making this thread to ask questions.
I'll start of: How long does it take for the global version to go on sale after the Chinese one?

I current have a OnePlus 5T but I would like to upgrade to this phone (Mi 8) I was wondering where can I buy this phone and ship to the US? I know there's not market or anything. But I don't want to to pay double price either from a third party.
Thanks!

Average sot without heavy gaming?

Is it treble enabled?

sure, it comes pre installed with android 8.1

Hi guys. Since this is a Q&A thread, i'm wondering:
I bought my Mi 8 today, china version. Will I still be able to flash global software on it, or just the chinese firmware?
And when it comes to flashing AOSP, will there be any difference?
Thanks a lot.
I'm not a noot in flashing, I've had Nexus for the last couple years, and i'm quite confident with it. Just not aware if it will be same rom for both versions or not.

hello. does the samsung amoled screen of mi 8 deteriorates? easily? is there a way to prevent it? im having second thoughts of buying it because of it. i hoping it will remain same quality after 3 years like ips.

- Does someone (especially from germany) tried WifiCalling? Does it work?
- Does someone tried a USB Power Delivery 3.0 Charger, how fast (how many watts) does it charge?

Do you mean any form of burn in? I have it since 12/06 and no burn in at all. (what a surprise )
I think it will not have much troubles with burn in, because it has full screen gestures (so no buttons which can burn in).
The navigation bar eventually can burn in, but I think that will be not annoying.

does it have fingerprint gesture? always listening ok google?

i see, thanks a lot for the help!!

Mi 8 is released in hong kong, and reading the site, it suggests that the nfc wallet can be used for services and specifically mentions google pay. Does this mean that there is a global rom now for mi 8, as google pay requires google services and afiak no chinese rom has these installed?
https://www.mi.com/hk/mi8/

I'm guessing it doesn't ship with Google Play. Is this hard to install? Do you need to unlock bootloader for the eventual global rom?

Google Services arent hard to install. You just need the Google Installer Apk which installs you all services, without the need off unlocking bootloader or root the devices before.
I dont know if you need an unlocked bootloader for the global rom - I would say no but i can be wrong.

Mate 10 China re brand success!!

Omg was this not a simple process, finally running L29C636 on the mate 10, fully re branded, the China firmware wasn't bad but too much chinese
Managed to brick it in the process, FRP locked, Bootloader locked, after a long night crying in my sleep we finally manged to unbrick and do it properly, or I should say he did lol
All thanks go to FUNKYHUAWEI, jesus this ain't like it was on the Mate 9, that was s, so simple, FH is finding a way to simplify it but that might not happen, you really gotta know what you're doing here but with FH's help...he made it look easy, very happy now, I'll rebrand to C432 when thats available lol, I feel much better about doing it again

Sure.
Serious question. I understand many want to rebrand Chinese ROM to international L29 ROM. But why? My understanding is that you can change AL00 system language to English and you can install Google Play (and services). You can even uninstall all the Chinese bloatware apps via Huawei's Application Store manager app.
So what are the pros and cons? Surely there will be more updates too with the AL00 ROM considering Huawei is a Chinese manufacturer?
So why debrand? Why not just stick to AL00 and do all the above? What am I missing?

You cannot remove all the chinese things from china firmware that's why.
What "Chinese things" though? How do they affect day to day use? Thanks.

You will get Hiboard instead of Google's version of that board. Hivoice instead of Google Now. Since the yellow book is filled with Chinese contacts, the dial pad shows up predictive Chinese contacts from yellow book whenever you dial. The Music and Video app has Chinese online content. And maybe because of the new "AI" introduction you might face China based AI pop up tips. You can turn off the Hiboard, but you can't replace it with Google board in a way you get the same swipe left shortcut. You can't remove nor replace the Hivoice (swipe up shortcut). The Music and Video app you can only get around by hiding the app and using alternate app from playstore. The Chinese Yellow book problem in dial pad also could not be resolved, however not sure if its different on the Oreo + EMUI 8. Most bloatware can be deleted but a couple of them cannot be. So those who wish to use the Chinese rom be sure you can adapt to these. Also not sure if 3rd party NFC payment apps will work.
Up to now I have brought Huawei phones from China because Huawei releases these phones internationally a couple months later, it is priced cheaper and more faster rom updates. So i didn't take much issue to the problems stated above. But this time i might go for the local version of Huawei itself as the release date here is not far off and the price is as cheap as the official price in China (getting from re sellers in China would increase price by 100-200$) and if i get 4-6 rom updates a year (https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/help/how-rom-update-year-t3696371) that should be more than enough for me.

I can't remember all but one of them is the chinese yellow page in dialer.
And one more thing not sure if they fix the notification bug in mate 10 cause in mate 9 all chinese firmwares has a bug that won't allow notifications like WhatsApp and Facebook to appear till you open the application itself.

That is more to do with changing the settings that makes selected apps to close when phone is in sleep and also maybe toggling notification permissions. Also there is toggle in wifi settings which turns off wifi when in sleep.

All the replys are quite accurate. From my experience with the Mate 9, another thing I noticed is that there are some features that work only if you know Chinese language. For example, you can set the phone to answer a call, hands free, by voice but you have to say "answer" in Chinese. I could never figure a way around that.

When you rebrand the phone you will get the ota specified for the region u rebranded to,so no worry about that.
Once rebranded the phone acts like a genuine phone from the region it's rebranded to. Ota updates work normally. You can use volte, WiFi calling and so on
According to O2 in the UK, Volte only works with phones with O2 firmware so it's no point rebranding specifically if you want Volte and you will use an O2 SIM card.

I haven't used EMUI8.0 however for all previous versions, you cannot replace the Hiboard. You can only disable the Hiboard via home screen settings. I don't know if it can be done after rooting though.

How to remove Black Bar in PUBG

Title says it. In the screenshot you can see the left side where the notch is, the screen is black. I noticed the Chinese version of Pubg doesn't have this. I wonder if the global version can stretch all the way
*EDIT* with an update to MIUI (mine is Chinese), the problem was fixed
*Either that or PuBG update fixed it but I don't remember getting a pubg update

I really need some understanding. Wdym by "benefits" of Chinese version?
Does .eu have proper notifications? Because in Chinese notifications seem like a complete train wreck. Sometimes they show sometimes not. Some make noise while others don't. Particularly, I use Muslim Pro and the adhan never plays. Only vibrations.
If I remember correctly, it worked fine on global on my OnePlus 5T before.
Is Xiao AI replaced with Google?
Does the theme use Chinese or English themes? (If I know correct, the Chinese themes are better)
I saw all the extra features in Xiaomi.eu. But small things in Chinese bug the heck out of me. Like notifications not working properly or showing on lockscreen. Xiao AI, Chinese language here and there. Improper Google Integration(like Casting is broken) and many other small things which I don't recall. I'm very worried if those carry over to Xiaomi.eu
But then I don't think I have much of a choice anyway since if I heard correct, the 8GB doesn't support global ROM or something. So I might just be left with Xiaomi.eu.
But I just have 188 hours to unlock . Which i think falls on April 9th

After the update it's now more like the iPhone X with the options being moved a bit away from the curves so nothing is cut off. Also makes it easier on the fingers to reach things.
But most importantly, no black bar(s)

Alright, I checked back and found location history off in the setting showed in the attachment. Did some digging and found that it's a widespread problem for china rom.
So, trying global rom is only option left.
Hi!
I have same problem and I think it have to do with ROM we are using. I'm guessing you are on CN ROM (as I am) and kibria.mgk is on IN version of ROM.
It must be something that Xiaomi removed from CN ROM.
I also have problem with using AR in Google Maps and guess it is all connected.
We have to wait for Global (EU) version and then it will work.
It's really disgusting that Xiaomi choose to lock the bootloader according to region,
I thought Android was open source and end-user is is free to choose what he wants ,how he wants his device to be,but these kind of things, I don't F*going understand,if I had brought something from someone then I don't have right to do to anything with the product I have purchased and I own ?
It's like you have freedom but still it's been regulated
WTF ??? Common man!!
Unlocking bootloader is like potential risk of your device to get hacked, at today everything is on phon. I mean literally all your personal data and Information regarding your bank account or your contact or your pictures, you name it you have it on your phone
And most recently it saw a news update that snapdragon proccessor has been hacked,it's named as repawn or snappawn I don't remember exactly
But what the ****???
I spent alot of money on a new device that it's better and secure than my previous device, but I'm so restricted???
I don't really understand
I feel like I should get back to my old Nokia black and white phone where I don't have to face all this ****
And just play snake game for fun

What are you complaining about. All regions are bootloader locked. All regions can unlock the bootloader. You are free to install anything you like on all versions of the phone.
The only restriction is that you can only relock the bootloader with the official ROM from the same region the phone is from.
Try buying an iPhone and see how much freedom you get to do what you want with the phone.
Same issue here on Taiwan telecom usage.
No Google Location History function in Google Map.
Can not Enabled it even install Apk from APKMirror.
On my Mi 9T Pro (global rom) everything is turned on, nothing paused, no battery restrictions, no monkey business whatsoever. Still, when I during one day by car visit six places, only 2-3 places is 'recorded' and visible on my timeline. What could possibly be the culprit here? Any suggestion appreciated.

jmikepr said:
When the phone launched. See My Original Thread I was one of the first guys in here tinkering, exploring, flashing .EU ROM on the China Model etc.
I kept the phone for a few months. Really enjoyed it then I moved on.
I recently imported another device and THERE ARE SOME MAJOR CHANGES.
The bootloader unlock time on my early models (I bought and sold about 3 of them) was 7 days (160 something hours)
The bootloader unlock time is now 576 HOURS. Which initially thought wasn't a big deal. Honestly I never minded the China ROM all that much. However China ROM 12.5.17 is broken as hell for a western user. I mean notifications are completely broken. Which shocked me because I previously used 12.5.4 without any issues.
I don't mean slightly broken. On all the previous CN Roms I could make my notification experience work fine with a bit of tinkering. 12.5.17. They just are bugged as hell. They barely come through over wifi. No matter what settings in MIUI you pick. I could go on and on. But that's not my point.
My point is this. If you're a new buyer. DO NOT UPDATE THE ROM OTA that is available out of the box. You will basically have an unusable phone for a month if you do. Just use the build that is on the phone by default are manually apply a more recent OTA package. But if you've got a 576 hour wait to unlock the bootloader. You don't want to deal with the 12.5.17 issues I dealt with.
I ended up using a paid EDL service which I WILL NOT NAME. Because it violates XDA terms. But I flashed 12.0.13 CN via EDL mode and ALL MY ISSUES ARE GONE. I'll use my outdated ROM until my bootloader is unlocked then flash .EU
Just wanted to save you guys some headache.

I guess there's something to do with your Mi account. If you unlock "too many" phones with your account you may get restricted.
If you open a new account you might be able to unlock in 168 hours.

High risk. High reward. If it works then I get in earlier. If not I restart at 576 hours
i also think it has to do with your account and not 11 ultra or xiaomi's models

hey, in order to track, collect, store and provide as much data as possible, it is verly likely to implement such an devastating barrier. the data sets appear to be more relevant and you can percept more equivalenze to individuals. bit late sorry but for further details consider this and keep an eye on it.

dear archer, im a data scientist from western europe managing large darabases and analysing data structures especially on mobile phones. first of all let me say, i try to handle your request in english. hopefully no misunderstandings.
there are several data mechanics "build in" in xiaomi devices, which are programmed to extract as much data as possible, while the user by itself should not be able to manage those data in a certain way. however by importing those models to other parts of the world, they need a round up but xiaomi failed to provide a total fix of their rom guided to western world data privacy rules. (privacy rules variates from country to country)
here we go.
gallery has build in features to track and collect as much as it can and even if indicated to store it hidden on parrellel partitions and storage sectors. while upgrading (or downgrading) your rom and rom features by ota or several further update options it may happen that those unwanted data services from miui rom and its "specific" features causes applications to misbeheviour. thats related to some android key essentials and is not caused by you in most common reasons. particularily the users will notify by strange force closes or empty data sets shown up or even unwanted data appeares to be collected to storage visible to everybody.
to fix this you should rather run custom rom(with mostly less over all security components, very sadly) or look out for a stock rom stable precisivly modified to fit but hard to find. you eventually buy another mobile. in this particular case try to manually back up your third party data u want to keep, save your accounts and stuff, make sure you do not loose any important provider settings and just change release. i would recommend you to look for another mobile.
more informations probably soon but please keep in mind, strange things going on with our data cannot tell you guys much more actually right now hopefully soon.

General I bought the Motorola x40, ask me anything!

Cons so far:
5g doesn't seem to activate, I'm on EE UK. volte and vowifi works
Can only add curve card in Google pay. Lloyds bank and Starling bank don't work
Google location history doesn't activate.
Pro:
Camera is good
Fast charging
Great performance
Screen is good
Speakers sound loud and crisp with bass
Software is full of options and customisation
Does the phone fast charge if you're using it for watching something/gaming

Yes
1. Does the phone have in-display fp (or) side mounted ?
2. Can you change the device font to google-sans or something similar ?
3. Have you been able to compare the 1080p display to any of the new 2K ones. How does it compare ?
Have you found an EDL loader for it?
Is it "range restricted"?
You can post a link and I'll tell you.

I haven't found and edl loader.
What do you mean by range restricted? Network bands? They're all active In the UK, but there's no 5G. It's probably restricted by Motorola

Most (some? all?) Motorola Firehose loaders are crippled and don't allow you to read (and write?) all the partitions.
My Moto G Power (2021):
Code:
C:\>edl /r /pboot_a boota.img
Found EDL 9008
Configuring... Ok
Requesting GPT 0 header... Ok, receiving... Ok, requesting entries... Ok, receiving... Ok
Requesting read boota.img...
<log value="ERROR: range restricted: lun=0, start_sector=1421632, num_sectors=196608" />

No 5G outside China, can't add all my cards to Google pay, and I'm just missing Google integration. No location history, no assistant, and have to unlock phone to use Google pay.
I'm getting CN OnePlus 11 with global rom on it, and locked bootloader.
In general, which device do you prefer, the 30 ultra or elx40?

Yeah but then again, I 100% need root to pass safety net after changing to global rom because I couldn't have locked BL again. OnePlus allows it. Anyway I purchased global variant of OnePlus 11. They had a deal so good that it worked out cheaper than buying the CN version
