General Let me save you new guys A LOT of headache - Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra

.

jmikepr said:
When the phone launched. See My Original Thread I was one of the first guys in here tinkering, exploring, flashing .EU ROM on the China Model etc.
I kept the phone for a few months. Really enjoyed it then I moved on.
I recently imported another device and THERE ARE SOME MAJOR CHANGES.
The bootloader unlock time on my early models (I bought and sold about 3 of them) was 7 days (160 something hours)
The bootloader unlock time is now 576 HOURS. Which initially thought wasn't a big deal. Honestly I never minded the China ROM all that much. However China ROM 12.5.17 is broken as hell for a western user. I mean notifications are completely broken. Which shocked me because I previously used 12.5.4 without any issues.
I don't mean slightly broken. On all the previous CN Roms I could make my notification experience work fine with a bit of tinkering. 12.5.17. They just are bugged as hell. They barely come through over wifi. No matter what settings in MIUI you pick. I could go on and on. But that's not my point.
My point is this. If you're a new buyer. DO NOT UPDATE THE ROM OTA that is available out of the box. You will basically have an unusable phone for a month if you do. Just use the build that is on the phone by default are manually apply a more recent OTA package. But if you've got a 576 hour wait to unlock the bootloader. You don't want to deal with the 12.5.17 issues I dealt with.
I ended up using a paid EDL service which I WILL NOT NAME. Because it violates XDA terms. But I flashed 12.0.13 CN via EDL mode and ALL MY ISSUES ARE GONE. I'll use my outdated ROM until my bootloader is unlocked then flash .EU
Just wanted to save you guys some headache.

Also. I basically have to buy Xiaomi. I NEED the DC Dimming feature for my eyes. If Samsung implemented DC Dimming I'd probably go to Sammy and never come back.

Hi,
i got my imported Mi 11 Ultra 12/512GB (M2102K1C) on 2021/11/02 and after adding the phone to the my account for unlocking it's still 160h and no more.
OTA Updated to 12.5.17 and waiting for unlock.

Honestly I'm probably going to return this one to Wonda Mobile. Becuase by the time this one is unlockable the 12's will be out.

I guess there's something to do with your Mi account. If you unlock "too many" phones with your account you may get restricted.
If you open a new account you might be able to unlock in 168 hours.

High risk. High reward. If it works then I get in earlier. If not I restart at 576 hours

i also think it has to do with your account and not 11 ultra or xiaomi's models

Yeah, I made the mistake of updating, the notifications are a nightmare... don't work at all and there's no way to fix it.

hey, in order to track, collect, store and provide as much data as possible, it is verly likely to implement such an devastating barrier. the data sets appear to be more relevant and you can percept more equivalenze to individuals. bit late sorry but for further details consider this and keep an eye on it.
BsodenJeff said:
dear archer, im a data scientist from western europe managing large darabases and analysing data structures especially on mobile phones. first of all let me say, i try to handle your request in english. hopefully no misunderstandings.
there are several data mechanics "build in" in xiaomi devices, which are programmed to extract as much data as possible, while the user by itself should not be able to manage those data in a certain way. however by importing those models to other parts of the world, they need a round up but xiaomi failed to provide a total fix of their rom guided to western world data privacy rules. (privacy rules variates from country to country)
here we go.
gallery has build in features to track and collect as much as it can and even if indicated to store it hidden on parrellel partitions and storage sectors. while upgrading (or downgrading) your rom and rom features by ota or several further update options it may happen that those unwanted data services from miui rom and its "specific" features causes applications to misbeheviour. thats related to some android key essentials and is not caused by you in most common reasons. particularily the users will notify by strange force closes or empty data sets shown up or even unwanted data appeares to be collected to storage visible to everybody.
to fix this you should rather run custom rom(with mostly less over all security components, very sadly) or look out for a stock rom stable precisivly modified to fit but hard to find. you eventually buy another mobile. in this particular case try to manually back up your third party data u want to keep, save your accounts and stuff, make sure you do not loose any important provider settings and just change release. i would recommend you to look for another mobile.
more informations probably soon but please keep in mind, strange things going on with our data cannot tell you guys much more actually right now hopefully soon.

Ask Any Questions

So instead of making separate threads, I thought it might be helpful making this thread to ask questions.
I'll start of: How long does it take for the global version to go on sale after the Chinese one?
I current have a OnePlus 5T but I would like to upgrade to this phone (Mi 8) I was wondering where can I buy this phone and ship to the US? I know there's not market or anything. But I don't want to to pay double price either from a third party.
Thanks!

Is it treble enabled?
sure, it comes pre installed with android 8.1
Hi guys. Since this is a Q&A thread, i'm wondering:
I bought my Mi 8 today, china version. Will I still be able to flash global software on it, or just the chinese firmware?
And when it comes to flashing AOSP, will there be any difference?
Thanks a lot.
I'm not a noot in flashing, I've had Nexus for the last couple years, and i'm quite confident with it. Just not aware if it will be same rom for both versions or not.

hello. does the samsung amoled screen of mi 8 deteriorates? easily? is there a way to prevent it? im having second thoughts of buying it because of it. i hoping it will remain same quality after 3 years like ips.
- Does someone (especially from germany) tried WifiCalling? Does it work?
- Does someone tried a USB Power Delivery 3.0 Charger, how fast (how many watts) does it charge?

Do you mean any form of burn in? I have it since 12/06 and no burn in at all. (what a surprise )
I think it will not have much troubles with burn in, because it has full screen gestures (so no buttons which can burn in).
The navigation bar eventually can burn in, but I think that will be not annoying.

Mi 8 is released in hong kong, and reading the site, it suggests that the nfc wallet can be used for services and specifically mentions google pay. Does this mean that there is a global rom now for mi 8, as google pay requires google services and afiak no chinese rom has these installed?
https://www.mi.com/hk/mi8/
I'm guessing it doesn't ship with Google Play. Is this hard to install? Do you need to unlock bootloader for the eventual global rom?

Google Services arent hard to install. You just need the Google Installer Apk which installs you all services, without the need off unlocking bootloader or root the devices before.
I dont know if you need an unlocked bootloader for the global rom - I would say no but i can be wrong.

RCS for one. Launcher with Google feed built in without the need to root.
There are a few advantages to the T-Mobile ROM. Not a lot, but a few.

Oh I see I never heard of RCS until you mentioned it. I only booted the stock ROM once before flashing international. I also do not think microg supports Google feeds never used a feed before. How do people admin android without root?
I used to root everything. I just don't have the time anymore plus I din't buy my phone out right and I don't feel like calling TMO to try and get out of the payoff restriction.

I didn't buy phone outright within one hour of taking it home I was boot loader unlocked , sim unlocked and rooted. No need to call t mobile for anything. I only booted the stock operating system once. Which was only because it was required step in the process. They asked me for help in setting up my phone. I sure if you can remove Google play services and seemed to think the phone wouldn't work without Google play services.
I get the desire for RCS,but it's barely used still... I could see it mattering in the future, but as of right now, meh... I got mine unlocked by sweet talking a rep, but MSM tool is great too! As much as I love the Google feed, I simply have a shortcut for it on my home screen so I can quickly go to it if needed... Honestly, the international variant works so much better for me! Sadly, TMO really restricts software updates for so many Android manufacturers, even aside from OnePlus. By the time TMO approve a software update, new patches and updates have already released on the mainstream side.
Wow...figured someone would have mentioned it by now...but anyway. Nova Launcher has a Google Feed plugin where you can just swipe right and you have the Discover feed. No root required.
As for RCS...not that big of a deal for me. I'm using International on my TMO 6T because I got tired of the SLOWWW updates.
I'm confident the T-mobile techs have noticed your demands here on XDA. They are surely working on your requests.

Yeah, I know about the alternatives but they are just not the same as having a dedicated stock launcher with the feed built in. It just seems cleaner to me.
Right now though, I do admit I cant use RCS because no one I know has it. So I went to Beta 9 and am using CPL with the plug in.
I am waiting on my token so I can get off this slow update T-Mobile schedule. I finally got tired of waiting so I called them up and told them I need sim unlock they did it even without phone payoff.

What does sim unlock mean in terms of updates? I am not sure if my sim is locked or not no proper method of testing but omni or carbon ROMs update just fine without official sim unlock. I only used the stock ROM long enough to boot the thing to fastboot to flash the international ROM. I did this inside the t mobile store while they processed the return of my wife's iPhone ten pro or what ever it was. They didn't seem to mind. Odd they let me do it with out the phone being processed yet. Mine was rooted and boot loader unlocked before I got my receipt. Their system was down for processing returns so I was there about an hour.

Yeah but I would think that the advantages of having newer/faster updates outweigh having to use another launcher or having RCS. Honestly, the OnePlus Launcher leaves a lot to be desired. I got rid of it almost immediately after I got the phone after I saw its huge lack of customization. Used Nova Launcher for years and love it. I won't use these betas though. I use my phone all day and just don't wanna run into annoying bugs lol. Hopefully we get a big new stable update soon.
RCS isnt something I really *NEED*. I can see when a message was delivered...but I'm sure we'll get RCS eventually.

Alright, I checked back and found location history off in the setting showed in the attachment. Did some digging and found that it's a widespread problem for china rom.
So, trying global rom is only option left.
Hi!
I have same problem and I think it have to do with ROM we are using. I'm guessing you are on CN ROM (as I am) and kibria.mgk is on IN version of ROM.
It must be something that Xiaomi removed from CN ROM.
I also have problem with using AR in Google Maps and guess it is all connected.
We have to wait for Global (EU) version and then it will work.
It's really disgusting that Xiaomi choose to lock the bootloader according to region,
I thought Android was open source and end-user is is free to choose what he wants ,how he wants his device to be,but these kind of things, I don't F*going understand,if I had brought something from someone then I don't have right to do to anything with the product I have purchased and I own ?
It's like you have freedom but still it's been regulated
WTF ??? Common man!!
Unlocking bootloader is like potential risk of your device to get hacked, at today everything is on phon. I mean literally all your personal data and Information regarding your bank account or your contact or your pictures, you name it you have it on your phone
And most recently it saw a news update that snapdragon proccessor has been hacked,it's named as repawn or snappawn I don't remember exactly
But what the ****???
I spent alot of money on a new device that it's better and secure than my previous device, but I'm so restricted???
I don't really understand
I feel like I should get back to my old Nokia black and white phone where I don't have to face all this ****

What are you complaining about. All regions are bootloader locked. All regions can unlock the bootloader. You are free to install anything you like on all versions of the phone.
The only restriction is that you can only relock the bootloader with the official ROM from the same region the phone is from.
Try buying an iPhone and see how much freedom you get to do what you want with the phone.
Same issue here on Taiwan telecom usage.
No Google Location History function in Google Map.
Can not Enabled it even install Apk from APKMirror.
On my Mi 9T Pro (global rom) everything is turned on, nothing paused, no battery restrictions, no monkey business whatsoever. Still, when I during one day by car visit six places, only 2-3 places is 'recorded' and visible on my timeline. What could possibly be the culprit here? Any suggestion appreciated.

Yeah, it really sounds like you need to send it back. using custom roms on a Xiaomi device isn't for you?
The 2 week wait is a security measure, and it was needed due to scammers. Yes, we all waited and honestly don't care to hear the whining. Hate to be a **** but it appears that you have been around long enough to know.
If you read more, you will see why Xiaomi choose to make people wait two weeks, and yes you absolutely must register your phone. It's actually very useful because you can enable Mi Cloud to backup and restore whatever files and programs/data should you need to wipe the device, and its the reason why the phone is unbrickable for the people that registered their devices.
Again, tens of thousands of us are just fine with all of that.
If that bothers you then please do return it, and you will never know what a perfect device the Mi8 truly is.
The Mi8 is without a doubt one of the best phones for using custom roms, and we have a lot of great developers here, the camera is fantastic and even better when using the most recent Pixel Camera Mod
To go on, the recent beta Android 10 Miui is far superior to stock.
Another option is to downgrade and buy the Xiaomi A3 which comes with Android One and there is no wait to unlock the bootloader.
Sorry for being Harsh, but I surely answered your questions.
O understand why,and like you say, I've been here years with hundreds of devices.
It just seems odd they have my number, email and all access for 15 days whilst I get ’nothing’ back in that time. any thing I can do whilst waiting? Like root or app removal? Ad blocks...etc...?

It's not that odd, the phone is warranteed. Personally, I register the warranty on everything I buy that costs a lot of money. At this point Xiaomi may make occasionally blunders. But I truly believe that they are highly ethical. They have had none of the Drama that certain other companies have had and they are one of the few who still allows for the bootloader to be unlocked.
There is plenty you can do, if you are fully updated to the recent Miui 11, you can turn off as, and using a non root ad blocking program such as Blokada or a Firewall program such as Adclear.. which works well.
Google how to properly bind your account to device or it could take longer. Your account must be bound to MiCloud and syncing. Once that part is setup then you can unlock the bootloader after 15 days.
Once you understand how it works you will find that it's actually very easy.
On the other hand, other devices such as One Plus are actually much more of a pain ( for some) due to their partitioning privileges structure.
Bide your time, and you will find it surely worthwhile. Slot of good information is available here in XDA which can be supplemented further by participating in Mi Community, at least initially, there is a lot of good steps with illustrations available and the users are highly active with being helpful.
Edit: Absolutely make sure that you register with correct information or you will be screwed. The account register your and IMEI, which again makes the phone much more secure.
Finally, during the 2 weeks read and take notes, this way you will know exactly what to do, when it's time to unlock the bootloader. I suggest using the Xiaomi. EU rom but that's a personal preference, there are plenty of time to choose from.
sadly I cant use this phone with my proper, usual sim card as I cant use it daily without root features I need, so I just have it with a spare sim in it for the 2 weeks and leave it at home, using my current phone. I will then unlock it with this spare sim in and then do the bootloader/twrp/kernals/roms...etc which I'm guessing will be ok to do? I wont be using a miui rom on it when it's finished, I had no intention of using miui when I got the phone, it was only bought for the hardware.

Full WW rom tencent version 1908_12 failed to manual update

Hi guys, i need your help. i just got my phone and both the phone and fingerprint is running on WW rom, but when i try to manually install it, it says system update failed
Note: i used device info HW to check them
Is your phone's tencent version that is supposed to have CN ROM? If so then return them directly since any tencent versions that comes with WW ROM is unofficial and may not have valid warranty. Never buy tencent version with WW ROM.
Asus have stated very clear on their forum that any tencent with WW ROM is not official device and that Asus do not produce any tencent version with WW ROM.
These phones have mostlikely been opened and person has reflashed Them to WW ROM and then resealed the packaging and then sold them online.

Are you trying to update to to 1910.44? If so, you need to flash the raw .44 rom, run flashall_AFT.cmd from the unzipped folder extracted to c drive and remove the original zip from that same folder... You need to do this in fastboot mode
my phone actually comes with WW rom fully. the package is sealed so i dont think it was opened and changed by them.
As for the update, i waa trying to update to the 1910_35 version, but failed
is there any way to check which rom it was in initially?

If it's Tencent version, then it definitely came with CN ROM & WW was flashed and the phone sealed up.
But that shouldn't be a problem. Ignore what Asus said as posted by @Jake S. That isn't an issue - I can't count the hundreds of thousands of region-specific devices flashed with global ROM without issues. Matter of fact, my 12GB/512GB is on the way (CN changed to WW).
Flash the raw. 44 first like @reg66 said & you'll be good.
All the best

You're welcome, enjoy:good:
I believe I have the same version of the phone as stated here. My phone info says 16.0640.1908.12 it has the August 2019 security update.
I bought the 12G/512G version on ebay that was shipped to me from New Jersey.
I have been enjoying the phone a lot for a week, but would like to fix the few problems that the phone gives me. Like not being able to get Netflix from the Playstore. Also some apps give errors that did not in my Note 9. Like youtube will not load while I'm out of wifi range in 4G data. All other apps stream data fine. And i can play CoD Mobile fine, but Youtube won't load anything. But funny enough it will work through Chrome lol.
My question, before i keep rambling, can i do the update to this new 1910.44 by just loading the update on my phone and rebooting? Will this update fix some of the problems i have been having? Or do i need to do a flash? Will this wipe all my data???
Or is it worth doing the other tutorial that you edit files in the code of the phone to change the fingerprint and stuff.
Ive never done anything like that to a phone, so i am hesitant to change anything. I would prefer the easiest solution of just downloading an update and letting the phone load it on its own.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

TBH, there isn't an "easiest solution" for you unless the problem with your phone isn't a big one.
Starting off with the YouTube, can you check mobile data and confirm the app has access to it not only Wi-Fi? Alternatively, download YouTube Vanced and see if it works fine. I strongly believe there's something wrong with your YouTube app settings nothing to do with the phone itself.
Now to the main issue:
We cannot say if you can or cannot because we have no idea what you have in your hands.
You have to check out your version and also fingerprint if they are both WW then you can go ahead and download the file to the root of your phone and follow the instructions (restart), if fortunately it works, then we good else, you'll have to flash raw then do the steps.
NOTE: To check your current fingerprint, download and install device HW info from the playstore. Under 'system' you'll find the current rom (CN or WW), the product id and fingerprint versions. When you have that confirmed, we'll know where to go from there.
Yes I believe you'll be a bit sceptical due to fears but if you do have a PC that's all you need. Take a deep breath and dive in the deep end
That's how I reluctantly (more like scared) began rooting and flashing of ROMs now I do a bit of modding myself.
Please check serial number your phone and serial number in the box. The serial number may not match.
I will definitely take in to consideration the suggestions.
I checked the youtube app and nothing seemed wrong in the settings, and like i mentioned, all other apps like Pandora, IG, Waze, and Chrome are working fine on 4G.
But there are other issues like some notifications not being pushed even though i have notifications turned on for all apps. Even my text message notifications aren't coming through, even though my phone vibrates, and my Garmin watch tells me i got a text, my phone won't show i have a notification, i have to go in the app. Same happens on WhatsApp.
But i digress... The good thing is that the seller on eBay has returns for 30 days. So selling, in what i can only describe as "defective software" phone, should definitely qualify for a return. I will then search for a proper Global unlocked version of the phone.
I think one sure way to tell out of the box should be that the back of the phone should say "Republic of Gamers" instead of Tencent Games right?
I really wanted to try to fix all the issues on my own through the phone, but i do not have the courage to mess with the phone codes. And also i see everyone describing the methods on PC/Windows. I only have Mac computers at home and at work.
Unless anyone knows someone in the Los Angeles area that can do it??? hahaha. I would be willing to pay for the service of course.
Thanks for the help guys!!!

It's good that you have a 30 - day return window.
You should know that even the Tencent version has 12GB/512GB variant.

Yes i just realized that now that i started reading in this forum. At first i thought that the Tencent version was only the 8gb/128gb, and all the bigger ones were global. Now i see that mine is a larger Tencent variant like you say.
So as long as the back says Republic of Gamers, thats a good start right? As long as i don't get another that is marked Tencent on the back?

Well, for your situation (wanting a full global ROM (WW) with global fingerprint (WW) OOB), getting the global version ie Republic of Gamers variant is a good start.
But for lots of us who are conversant with flashing, getting the Tencent variant is as good as the other one.
Oh, and after a bit of research, I believe the issue with your phone is even though the ROM has been changed to WW, the fingerprint is still CN.
Changing the fingerprint to WW will solve the YouTube problem and also update.

Dude are you stupid or what? You should not ignore what Asus states. Buying a unofficial device with ww ROM off tencent won't be valid for warranty and Asus clearly stated that. Since device has been opened and reflashed with ww ROM and device is only in valid warranty when it has official rom and not have been reflashed over to another rom that the device shouldn't have. So please don't lie to people like that next time.
Asus will fully reject his device under warranty if he sends it in for repairs under warranty request. Since they will state clearly that his device has WW ROM and not CN ROM that it supposed to have. So then warranty is voided.

Why is there the need to insult me - calling me stupid. Sometimes, I fail to understand why you kids of nowadays feel the need to fly off the handle insulting people you don't know.
Furthermore, it neither addresses the issue at hand nor solve it.
Please, learn to be civil and respectful in your future engagements. Not only does it show your maturity, ethical and moral values but it also depicts what you stand for.
Now back to the issue:
1. Every mobile company is aware that many of its devices will be sold through third-party outlets many of which are not directly connected to them. Matter of fact, hundreds of thousands of these devices per manufacturer go through these channels making a total of millions of devices.
2. I don't know about you but I've been using mobile phones for two decades. Funny thing is none of them failed so bad to need replacement except LG v10 which I bought from T-mobile in the US but did the warranty help my bootloop? No, the replacement also got bootlooped and after all the hassles and whatnot, there was no benefit to me.
3. You should understand that these sellers like on AliExpress purchase hundreds of thousands of these devices with warranty.
In that stead, they also do notify you of a year's warranty.
4. Regardless of your warranty (from company itself, retailer or third-party merchant), there are limitations to what you can demand. Eg, physical damage, moisture/water ingress etc.
5. With regard to above point, hope you know that whenever we modify the software aspect of a mobile device (unlocked bootloader, region change, rooting etc) in which we have to send in for any reason, we just undo the procedure before sending in.
On a final note, in as much as I respect your argument, I'm sorry to still stand against it. Probably for you, warranty is a deal breaker but it isn't for me cos I don't wish to exercise the option of warranty. But that notwithstanding, even these merchants you're on about sell devices with a year's warranty.

Not very cool calling someone stupid dude. Anyway,, regarding warranty, assuming it's purchased from a good outlet, they are responsible for the warranty, mine, for example is with giztop for 1 year. But if the phone does go belly up, I'm probably **** out of luck as I leave the bootloader unlocked, for root. But that's a choice /risk I'm taking...
