Will the Mate 10 Series ever get the EMUI 8.1 (Android 8.1) update? - Huawei Mate 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

The 8.1 update will be sick, it'll unlock our NPUs for other apps, give us more scene detections for our cameras, the option to turn off the AI, reportedly the "long exposure shots without a tripod" feature, and many more. Huawei said android 8.1 is "officially compatible with the Mate 10" (4 months ago), which makes me wonder, are we ever getting the update? The phone has been released for quite a while now, and we never got any updates AFAIK. Do you think we will? If you do, why do you say so?

I don't have the answer but yes it could be nice to have an update for it but when ??

IMO wouldn't it be better if we jumped to Android 9? Dev preview is on Chinese mate10 AFAIK. I had a P8, that went from 5.0 to 6. There was a very brief 5.1 with a few fixes. The time they spent on that would have been far better used polishing the 6.0 release.

If I had to choose I'd pick android P, it's really sick, I'm asking for 8.1 because that's the very least you could ask for, don't set the bar too high because Huawei failed to deliver many times before.

The update is rolling out in China right now, but we will have it a month or two later, maybe...

Huawei promised on stage that the mate 10 (and pro) would be getting Android 8.1 early this year with support for the Android NNAPI that would give developers access to the NPU.
Fast forward, it's almost summer and nothing yet.
When I read the news that the night camera mode would be arriving soon for the Mate 10, I had a little hope that this update would be bundled with the 8.1 update, but it seems that for other regions on FF the night camera update is already showing and no sign of the 8.1.... it's just a June patch with the night camera add-on.
I'm also not holding my breath for a fast Android P release, maybe end this year, beginning of the next year? Anyways after the next Mate launch for sure.

It looks like huawei will have to move to other os, or stop selling their devices in the US, sooner than they expected. Let's hope that this doesn't happen.

Hoping for 8.1 soon and for sure also for Android P in my dream lol

What you mean "dreaming Android P". The device is not a year old and they will for sure drop Android P for Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro. The problem is EMUI.
I will mever buy again a Huawei device, bootloader lock 4 ever and lame updates.

BLA-L29C636B139 just popped up on FF. Only a June Security patch with no Night Camera add on.

Night camera mode? Isn't this there from the start?

Haha, sorry.

There is a new firmware in FF 145 it has nightshot but the firmware is not approved yet so we gotta wait till it gets approved to install I guess. I am a BLA-L09 C432 user from UK. Just in case any one wanted to know or if it even mattered.

I think if they made stock google look or used android one on their device. These phones will sell like hotcakes, also they include all their features that be great. But that's just a dream for now. -_-

145 just arrived on ff with night mode. Unavailable for me yet

136 update with nightmode available on FF but not approved for my firmware, will wait till it is. Sadly, it's still android 8.0. Should I lose more hope because of that?

Pays to read. The 8.1 update does not start until the end of the month, another 2 weeks.

Already using 145. June patch. Night shot better, but not that thing. Anyway, satisfied with this update.

Android 8.1

Hi, Oreo 8.1 final beta is available for Pixel 2 users and will enable the Pixel's NPU for third party apps. Just wondering if anyone knows what 8.1 might do for the Mate 10? Google Lens?
I don't know what it will do to the Mate 10, but I have seem some signs of internal builds of what looks like might be EMUI 8.1
I haven't released anything yet, though. Take it with a grain of salt for now
Update on the above: EMUI 8.0.1 exists but it's still Android 8.0, not 8.1

Any major changes in EMUI 8.1 ? Or just adapting EMUI for the new hardware stuff on P11 ?

Turned out to be EMUI 8.0.1, and no major changes that I can report on. Of course whatever is the final release for the P11 might be different.
Huawei don't bother with incremental OS updates. Correct me if I'm wrong, bit every Huawei and Honor phone never got 7.1 shame as 7.0 had a battery drain issue that was fixed in 7.1 a year later and my Honor 8's battery is still very poor.

That's incredibly unfortunate given that .0 Android releases are usually quite half-baked. I guess it goes well with the half-baked EMUI.
This time there is a pretty darn important reason to go to 8.1 for Huawei, though. Fast, even.
Huawei is massively advertising the NPU of its Kirin 970 SoC - and on Android 8.0 the NPU is borderline useless. The couple of AI apps on the phone right now are little more than tech demos.
Android 8.1 brings the AI API necessary to make the NPU accessible to other apps.
Here is an editorial that speaks about the details and very much assumes that Android 8.1 will be coming to the Mate 10 (Pro) quite soon:
Android 8.1 and Oreo's AI future
If Huawei is truly skipping 8.1 this time around, they'd be significantly dumber than expected.
If the info in this link is true https://www.androidcentral.com/editors-desk-android-81-and-oreos-ai-future
I think the mate 10 will be the best/most advanced Android phone till the rest of the manufacturers bring NPU to there phones.

Where is our Pie on Nokia 8 Sirocco?

Even Oneplus 6 open beta is going to be over in a matter of time and soon will be updated to stable Android Pie and we are already hearing news about Android Pie beta for Samsung S9+. Is Nokia planning to update Sirocco directly to Android Pie without beta labs? If no then it will be quite late. Nokia 7 Plus is still on beta and so many phones for Nokia to update to Android Pie. I wonder how much time will it take the Android Pie update to trickle its way down to low end devices from Nokia seeing the condition of the Flagship. Maybe I am being too skeptical. I hope Nokia increases its pace this time. And they are doing tremendous job with the fast security patches. Given that other companies releases and forgets their low end phones and even mid rangers , Nokia is doing great.
Lol! Already released on the Oneplus 6 as of now. Oh Come on! Android One ...

Android Q Update Confirmed!

Huawei confirmed is working on Android Q for Mate 20 Lite and other Huawei Phones!
Probably arrive sometime in 2021 unless you're in Asia of course where it'll be out in a few months after Google release it.
This will probably take some time. Also, add more time because of network companies.... ?
My wife's Mate 20 Lite (global ver.) hasn't received an 9.0 update yet but Huawei announce Q
Huawei are great at talking.

Probably not, unless they're allowed to work with Google again. They have to work hard to get it released before that 90 day limit. But they did confirm the update, so I hope we'll get it eventually.
It's still bery early to say if the Mate 20 Lite will get the Android Q... despite what Huawei "says" today...
Android Q is still in development, so... there is a big gap between "say" that will support and really deliver the update... But again, is a unfinished version of Android, so...

Will we get the emui 10 update?

I looked at the features, and they were very promising. It even includes a dark mode!

Well, the phone's been out only a year so it should get it. Always worrying when you see the manufacturer promising updates for other devices but not yours. Why do they do that? I sold my Moto 5gs because of the lack of updates, so won't be buying them again. Ditto Samsung. Maybe i'll just get Pixel phones in future. I expect more than 12 months support (plus I read that Huawei/Honor were switching to quarterly security updates - we'll see). The Honor Play was very good value for money, and it would be hard to justify devices without SD card slots but I'm really not in the "get a new phone every year or two" game. My chromebook has an EOL date in about 5 years time; why shouldn't my phone, too?
Looking forward to the dark mode, although puzzled that it requires OS support.
With Project Treble and Mainline you'd think that Google are almost at the point where they can roll out OS updates behind the manufacturers backs.
Interestingly, looking at the Android dashboard, which historically has shown Android OS usage, you can see it's been down since May:
https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards
I wonder if this is going to come back in October when they announce the Pixel 4, and they're going to blow everyone away by saying Android 9 adoption has beaten all the other versions?

Probably, the biggest downside of honor and huawei phones is the lack of bootloader unlock codes, which leads to not much developer support. So I'm just always kinda looking out for updates
There is no official confirmation for Honor Play, unlike the Honor 8x or Honor 10 etc. Even if we do get the update, it isn't going to come anytime soon. Check this out: https://www.xda-developers.com/emui-10-android-10-update-timeline-huawei-honor/
The phone is still a massive value for its current price in terms of raw performance. I'm pretty content with it. Despite the quirks of EMUI, I've grown quite attached to it and will prefer it over almost all other android skins except probably full stock android...
Possibly, we might get Android 10 on Honor Play second quarter of next year.
I don't know how much we can trust this picture
But it's highly possible that we can forget about emui 10 for next 4-6 month for sure because emui 9.1 has been rolled out just yet
It is becoming obvious it will take time before Honor Play will receive EMUI 10 (if at all it will receive the update). It is not even on the list of Honor smartphones that will get Android 10 in the future. I am surprised to see Honor 8X included but not Honor Play.

Honor 8x got sales numbers. Honor play didn't
Honestly this is bull****. Why the **** people buy a ugly ass honor 8x with kirin 710 when they can buy a honor play at the same price
It is not getting. Honor service in twitter confirmed that Honor play is going to get next major android 10 updates due to "hardware limitations".
This is particularly strange because Honor play has Kirin 970, the flagship processor of Huawei of 2017-18. It is the same processor of the p20, which is scheduled for the update.
As Honor won't be sending it. Thus I am planing for unlocking bootloader in any way as soon as they push emui 10 update lol

But samsung have changed and now apparently promise 4 years of upgrades. The android one site is out of date and doesn't include the new £99, £129 etc phones nokia have announced which will get 2 years support. Seems funny typing it - like we should feel grateful to get support. It should be 5 years. But yes, huawei/honor aren't getting any more of my money. If you knew the honor play was going to get 1 os upgrade around 14 months after launch and that's it, would you have bought the phone. I wouldn't. Fool me once...

Harmony OS upgrade for P20 Pro in 2022 H1

promised here https://liliputing.com/2021/06/huaweis-3-new-matepad-tablets-run-harmonyos.html
I'm skeptical but that's interesting. I'll have to replace the device anyway this fall (as I need a recent version of Google enterprise services to run on my device) but I suppose it would be nice to have some updates on the P20 Pro if only as a backup device
I already moved on but keeping P20 Pro as backup device (battery replaced). It is very nice form factor, quite light, and camera is still very good even by modern standards. Anyway, will be reading reports of Harmony OS upgrades on P40 with great interest. Not a fan of Huawei UI, but it might be nice to get updates and patches for a 4 year old device
This is good and bad at the same time. On one hand, Huawei has finally adapted a good alternative for android, which means more competition(even if it is a fork). Also we might get Apple-like updates, only time will tell. These updates are opt-in so you are not obligated to use HarmonyOS. On the other hand, you can say goodbye to Google services and any root methods that were possible and not found yet. Huawei"s services are still trash and I fear we won't be able to remove the system apps even with adb. If they pull an ultimatum and allow us to unlock our bootloaders/root our phones.....New OS or not, I am moving to another companies. Maybe Asus/Sony/Xiaomi
Well HarmonyOS really? I don't see a Point Moving to it.. Im more than Happy to use LineageOS 16.0 on it Instead a few Months ago, Well HarmonyOS doesnt Include Google Apps and Kills Root Methods.. well i don't care i will Stick with other Operating Systems on my P20 Pro and will not Go Back to Huawei's Made Software until i will in the Future move to a Different Manufacture (Xiaomi or OnePlus)
In terms of software, I am totally disappointed with Huawei .. also how they Handle the Bootloader Unlock with a code .. Like there is something to hide about EMUI.. sorry but that's ridiculous.
You guys should stop spreading misinformation. P20 Pro came with GMS from the get go. If you upgrade to HarmonyOS on a device that had GMS (officially or LZPlay), GMS will still be totally usable. Even with the final build of HarmonyOS. People already tested this in the betas and final version. Don't believe me? Take a look at this video:

It's the first time I see anyone address the fact Harmony might support GMS. I don't think anyone here was knowingly spreading misinformation, but were rather making reasonable assumptions (I also assumed HarmonyOS wouldn't support GMS, even on my P20). I hope what we see in the video carries over to the final version, it would add a couple of years to the life of the phone
I'm not eager to switch from this totally usable(even great!) phone because of the huge slabs the flagship phones have became in the recent years. I'm not really eager to switch to harmony os either, because of the potential gms problem and integration. The only problem I have is the battery doesn't hold as well as it used to, but that is normal, the phone is 3 years old...
Bottom line, I still love it! It's almost a flawless flagship even today(thinking about changing the battery in their service, but it still lasts me a day)

I agree it's still a serviceable phone, but there are a couple of reasons I will need to jump ship. Lack of a major Android update (we'll be 2 versions behind and my employer doesn't let us keep a phone beyond n-1), and lack of security updates. Locking the bootloader midway through the sales cycle for this phone was a big mistake, it would have been one for the ages.
Guys good news. We gonna get HarmonyOS. Except it will be EMUI 12.

Seeing as we didn't get Android 11 on this phone, I'd be surprised if they provided Android 12. That would be a first, as far as I can tell.
EMUI 12 (beta for now) for older global devices has been confirmed to be Android 10 - based with some bits of HarmonyOS UI code. Nova 9 has been an exception, as it was released with Android 11 - based EMUI 12.x. I highly doubt we will ever get an updated Android 11 - based EMUI 12 on our older devices, when it gets out of Beta.
