G5s plus, G5 plus or G6? - Moto G6 Questions & Answers

I am looking for a new phone since my Moto G4 bit the dust last night and is no longer functional. Thank goodness for extended warranty which refunded $174.99 of the original $199.99 I paid for the phone 22 months ago.
Anyhow, I am torn as to which phone I should buy. The Moto G5s plus, G5 plus or Moto G6. I am finding conflicting reviews all over the Internet depending on what features the reviewer hold in the highest esteem. I recently bought a G5s plus for my wife and she loves it, but the camera is slow. The G6 plus is not available in the USA yet so that is not an option. I like that the G6 comes with Oreo and it seems to be a better choice as far as display and camera. But processor and speed the G5's seem to take the edge.
HELP!!! My head is spinning around in circles.

Hmmmm? Not according to Motorola's website.

You can pick up a G6 Plus on Amazon.com! I'm in the US typing on a G6+ and I love it! We are waiting for kernel sources so it shouldn't be long before we have TWRP working and there are already a few project treble based roms available such as RR Oreo, Los, or Aosp.

Wow! The price is higher than I expected. (G6+ = $380 - G6 =$250) Also, it is a no warranty phone so I would have to but a protection plan which jacks the price up another $80.00. Think I will go with the G5+.

I'm not big on third party warranty plans unless you get accidental damage coverage and if that is included then I feel it is always worth the investment even though NFC is useless for me. If the G6+ is out of your budget I understand but I think it's a great investment and since your posting on XDA I assume things like roms are important to you. In which case the G6+ is Project Treble compatible so the device will likely be wide open seeing as we have root and somewhat working TWRP. It's an awesome device though!

Yes, it is out of my budget. While I could go ahead and bite the bullet, I do have to put a limit on the purchase somewhere. I finally went for the G5+ 64 gig. The reviews and feedbacks on it were generally very positive and it gives me the options and features I want. Also it was $110.00 lower overall with the extended warranty which includes accidental damage coverage. I have had 3 phones covered with 3rd party plans and I had to use the coverage on all 3 (Ironically, all Motorola phones). So the plans have paid off well for me.
I realize that the G5+ comes with Nougat and is due for an upgrade to Oreo but that is also something I don't worry myself about. I find it amusing at how many users are constantly complaining concerning "lack of timely upgrades" from Lenova. It seems that as soon as a new version of Android is released, these forums are full of chatter about the subject of upgrades. For me, if my phone works and does everything I want as well as I want then that is good enough for me. When the upgrades come I am pleasantly surprised. I'm not one who insists on having the latest and greatest.
While I will eventually unlock my bootloader and root my phone as well as try the latest custom roms, it will be some time before I do so. I usually stay on stock for a few months before diving into the deep end. Thank you for the well informed feedback and suggestions, Didn't mean to get so verbose here but my first 2 cups of coffee have kicked in and you know how that goes.

Similar device to the 2nd gen Moto X?

I've been thinking of upgrading from my 1st gen Moto G. I eventually settled on the 2nd gen Moto X as a suitable replacement. Unfortunately, due to a horrendous experience with Motorola customer service, that's not going to be happening. I kind of settled on the 4.7" Idol 3 as a replacement (yeah, quite a step down, and more of a sidegrade from a Moto G), but I thought before I pulled the trigger I'd try to crowdsource another option.
Basically, my priorities are:
Length no greater than 140mm (5.5"). So I guess I'm looking at a 5" screen.
Unlocked GSM.
Price range $200-300 (new).
Not terribly old; still available new.
Company with a decent track record of getting OS updates to their devices.
Any opinions on non-Moto options I could look at?

Nexus 5? Close to that price point I'm guessing!
Good luck finding anything, most newer phones are either to big or to expensive or both. The moto x 2014 has its flaws for sure but based on your above specs its STILL your best choice.

Wow, I didn't actually realize that was in my price range (or close enough, anyway). That's really tempting, but it's almost a 2 year old phone (actually a month older than the phone it would be replacing). I think I'd be concerned about how long it's going to be supported yet. Definitely a step up, though, so I'll consider it. Thanks!

Yeah, after the experience I just had, I'm voting with my dollars. Moto is out for this one.
I just ran across the Huawei P8 Lite, which is sort of looking interesting at first glance.

Are you talking about what I've been hearing referred to as the Nexus 5 2015? Will probably be out of my price range at release, and I'm not sure I can wait that long. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
As great as the old Nexus 5 looks, I'm reading about Google putting a 2 year cap on major OS upgrades for the Nexus line, and that's almost up already. So that's out as well.
P8 Lite still looks interesting, except that they're still on KitKat with it. I can probably live with that until someone gets an aftermarket ROM running on it, though... I've only been playing around with Lollipop for a few weeks on my Moto, and I haven't found anything I can't live without.
just be sure you can unlock the bootloader and that there is dev support for that phone. Many of the cheaper phones ESPECIALLY meditek based ones seem to have questionable support and os upgradeability
Yeah although the nexus 5 is 2 years old the snapdragon 800 is similar to the 801 found in the moto x2014! The screen is an HD lcd panel, similar as far as resolution, yet different type of screen, x2014 has an amoled screen! And truthfully the nexus 5 if the bootloader is unlocked and your rooted with custom recovery will have the newest software for a few years to come! Unlike many other oem's which implement there own software into Android therefore guaranteeing very few updates! Look at the nexus 4, runs current 5.1.1, but I'm sure once 6.0 comes out the amazing devs will port roms for Android 6.0, and that phone is ancient lol, but it's a nexus!!! Good luck whatever you choose friend

It's 2017 - is the Moto X (2014) still recommended?

I've the chance to buy probably BNDS / BNIB units at the same cost as say more recent MT6737M/ Snapdragon 435 even MT6795 units with microsd, 64bit support.
I'm tempted by having the snapdragon 801 at a low cost but is it too late now expecially with the lack of 64bit support or does its raw power still relevant?
What would you do?
Moto X was a great device in its era. Even today I still praise it for the most compact device with a 5,2 inch screen. I can operate it easily with one hand. But,in today's standart,it's an outdated device. You got plenty devices with better specs and prices to choose. The most complaint with Moto X in my opinion is the battery life. I own a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X and comparing both is so pathetic. Battery endurance in Redmi Note 4 is so much better. If Moto X is the device with 4000 mah battery, I think it's still countable. With custom ROM,Moto X is still fast and fluid. I prefer using Moto X daily than my RN4X coz the design fits perfectly in my pocket.

I don't even know how to root it to get sunshine. Kingroot doesnt work and sunshine says the firmware isnt compatible.
Absolutely......................................not. Look I love my X 2014 but it was a flawed device when it came out and that didn't let it age well. The camera and battery were terrible when it came out, now they are down right garbage in comparison to mid rangers. The screen was average when it came out, now it's terrible in comparison. The lack of fingerprint sensor might not seem like a big deal but until you use it, you don't know what your missing. The phone is still smooth but how long until developers move on. The design in my opinion was still one of the best, a classic for sure. It's just not worth it.
Get a Moto G5 Plus or similar, they are under 200 sales.
Battery is too bad nowadays even if performance is alright, if you absolutely must go Moto then get the G5 Plus
Thanks for your feedback , a few questions to keep this going if you dont mind ...

This is disappointing -- 1 factor that makes me consider this is (since i had no real life experience with it) -- that the AMOLED screen and camera would still be competent to comparable models.

OK, if while considering all the above I add the relative context that in my area if available the G5 plus is 200USD, while the Moto X would be 110USD bnew, would that make it more appealing?
I've had mine for 2 years, and still loving it. I bought it in a carrier store for 400 Canadian Dollars. Since I can only buy phones in a store at full retail price, my choices are somewhat limited. I still can't find a "better" phone at $500 CAD. My Moto X 2014 is running the latest Android perfectly with 2GB RAM, and will run Android 8.0 Oreo (custom ROMs). The only consideration is band support, as it may not support the latest and fastest LTE bands used by some carriers nowadays. Also, this phone has NFC, some lower priced new phones may not.
The things I would be looking for in a new phone: longer battery life, latest LTE bands support, and maybe a bigger screen, like 5.5+ inch.
I just got that phone about 3 days ago... It is just amazing..remember.. It was a flagship.. Soft/hdw integratiom are perfect. Even with low battery and 2 gb of ram.. It's more worthy than several mid ranges phone mentioned. Besides, you get plenty of development for at least one more year.. Go for it!

Please help me decide betwen the G5S Plus and G5 Plus based on camera performance

I have purchased both the G5 Plus and the G5S Plus and am trying to decide which one to return and which to keep. I got the G5 Plus 64GB version for $200 and the G5S Plus 32GB version for $210.
I really prefer larger screens, so I really want the G5S Plus, but I am worried about the camera and all the bad reviews I've read. I don't need the best camera, I just need the camera to be good enough for me. I don't need depth effects or any other fancy effects. My main use of the camera is for taking close ups in sometimes low light conditions. I have a Nexus 6 right now and the camera often takes a long time to focus in this situation. It hunts for a focus and often by the time I touch the screen to take the picture the camera has lost the focus it had just a second ago. Then I have to delete and retake the photo.
If the Moto G5S Plus is better than my Nexus 6 in this situation, then I will probably be happier with its larger screen. If it is as bad or worse as my Nexus 6, then I'll want the G5 Plus, assuming it is better in that situation. Thanks in advance.
In good light, the cameras are about equivalent. The lower the amount of light in the scene, the better the G5 Plus holds up over the G5S Plus.
That said, neither are likely going to be as good as your Nexus 6.
I just came from a Nexus 6 to the G5S+ and I can confirm what sensi277 says -- the camera is nowhere near as good. That being said, the flash on the G5S+ is VASTLY superior to the flash on the Nexus 6, because the G5S+ flash offers much more natural light/tone rather than the Nexus 6 blue-ish LED type flash. So if you can use the flash I would say that the end results could be just about equal. If it's any consolation, the G5S+'s front cam blows the doors off the Nexus 6's front cam. I also like the camera app in the G5S+ much more than the Google Camera app on the Nexus 6.
OP here. I'm following up here to thank all for the info and to report on my experience. I ended up keeping the G5 plus. I did not try the G5S plus, so it may not be relevant here, but this is where I asked the question.
For my usage the G5 plus camera is noticeable better than my Nexus 6. In the low light closeups I take, it focuses better and much faster than my Nexus 6. I'm not really evaluating the quality of the images - all I need to do is read the text in the photos.

Sry to hijack this thread.
I'm on a Moto G 2014 (titan) at the moment and I want to buy a new mobile after Christmas.
I'm between the Moto G 5 plus and the Moto G 5s plus.
Here in germany both models are only available with 32 GB/3 GB ram and the 5s ist about 30 € more.
I heard that only the Moto G 5 plus can handle two SIM cards and a SD, with the 5s you have to decide whether you use two SIM cards or one SIM and one SD.
On the other hand the 5s has the bigger screen, the full metal casing and dual camera.
Kernel source isn't available yet for the 5s so that's the reason that there are less roms and no official twrp?
What would you recommend? Is the 5s worth the 30 € more?
I don't care too much about camera but the bigger screen would be nice.
How are your experiences?
Thanks for every reply.

I have to correct you on at least one point there. The Moto G5S Plus kernel sources have been released since before the phone was even out in the U.S.
The only question I'd ask is, can you live with only one SIM or only 32GB of storage? If the answer is no, then the G5 Plus might be the better choice.
If you don't need the dedicated secondary SIM/SD slots, and want a larger screen, I can't say many bad things about the G5S Plus. I don't know if it's worth an additional €30 to you, though; that's a decision you're going to have to weigh for yourself.

Heyy Wolfcity.. I remember i had a small conversation (via pm) with you a couple of months ago when i had to use titan.
Good to see you here. Well i skipped buying the OP5T and bought the Moto G5S plus (4+64gb one) and really glad i did that. This phone is really worth every penny and it runs and handles everything buttery smooth just as my Nexus6P. Development wise it might be bit slow but its picking up and there are a couple of good roms out there already.
As for you question, Moto G5S has a bigger screen and feels more premium along with the metal casing just like my Nexus6p.
The dual camera with depth mode does not work on custom roms 8.0/8.1 so basically its just like MotoG5 (with the single camera). Rest everything works fine and no complaints. If you are coming from a titan you will appreciate the amazing battery life and instant performance.
Moto G5 is already well established and you have a lot of custom roms to choose from (if thats you thing), if not then i would say 30€ extra for a metal body+bigger screen+front flash+dual camera is definitely worth it. This thing is good with stock rom and gives amazing results with just stock+custom kernel setup.
Good luck with your decision.
And P.S i gave this Phone to my Mum and i Stuck with my Nexus6P (only because Nexus has the best camera + no bugs at all and lots and lots of dev support and i frigging missed 2k amoled 5.7" screen!!!! haha). Gonna be holding out for Pixel XL 3 now.
Hi,
I was also trying to decide between G5 and G5S 64gb before Christmas. The larger screen and dual camera almost made me pull the trigger, even at the higher cost. However I read on the Lenovo forum that the G5S has a serious design flaw.... the dual camera lenses are getting dust on the inside. The 3.5 mm jack was moved to the top of the phone just to the left of the dual cameras, and the seal is not good. So the G5S was a no go for me, even though I'm not into taking pictures with a camera phone. I got the G5 and don't miss the extra .3 inch screen space that I had on my previous 5.5 screen (OnePlus One).

Thank you all guys, got a lot of new information now.
Sadly in Germany the 64gb version isn't available, neither the 5g plus nor the 5g s plus. But with a SD card that's ok for me and because the 5g plus can handle two SIM cards and a SD at the same time I think it will be the 5g plus for me.
Thx!

No chance of it being 14k. That's the price of Snapdragon 450 Moto G6.
They have priced the G6 plus at 22.5k so maybe they are planning to launch it between G6 and G6 Plus at 18-19k.
And that is just sheer optimism from my side. Knowing moto and their overpriced phones, I'm expecting 24-25k.

Sorry but i dont think they will launch this phone in Europe.
This phone has too many good features at too low a price. If you watch the launch event, you'll see how they kept emphasizing that they made this phone with the Indian customer in mind, who happens to be very price sensitive.
I'm hoping this phone launched in other markets and we get good dev support but somehow i doubt it. They want to you to buy overpriced G and G plus

If motorola releases kernel sources, many people will jump onto the bandwagon. And moreover, this same device launches as the P30 and P30 Note. With a slight variation in the spec sheet. Hence I expect development to be strong. Also its a Android One Device, you can expect 3 years of security updates.

I don't know about the history whether Motorola releases kernel sources early or it takes much time like xiaomi do. This phone will be my first Motorola phone but I do trust the brand that's why I am going for it. Earlier I had MI Max 2 which has quite bad development the main reason being xiaomi releasing the kernel sources very late. I mean the world is going for Android p and MI is still messing with nougat. Are you a developer? I have some knowledge of development but I cannot work from scratch. Feels like I am a copycat who just improvises[emoji6]

Motorola generally releases kernel sources in time. It already has the G6 series' sources available.
I generally find budget motorola devices to have good amount of support. I own a moto X play but sadly I cannot relplace its battery with an official motorola one so gotta change it. It runs Official LIneage OS 14.1 which is absolutely stable. I tested 2 Oreo Builds which work to the most extent but have a few bugs which make it a non daily driver material. Devs are still on it though. And some Xaomi devices have great dev suppport and some are absolutely trash, no offence to anyone.
I liked the motorola under google and my phone is from that age. As this device is under the Android One banner so I am considering it.
I am not a developer, I am a tinkerer. I don't critisize, I just inform things in a very detailed way.
I am in a dilemma between the Zenfone Max Pro and Motorola One Power. I prefer the Motorola One Power due to its software right now. I just hope they don't hold the dumb flash sales like Xaomi! ._.

Sanity Check

My beloved rooted Nexus 5 is now well past its best before date and on searching a replacement device am suffering sticker price shock for ' flagship' phones
Am considering the Essential PH1 considering its specs vs price point.
Take few photos, with performance as a 'Phone' - particularly battery life - a higher priority than camera
Given the litany of 'issues' reported and the stability of its manufacturer am I losing my mind seriously considering Essential ?
Should I just suck it up and spend the bucks (One+ 6 would be my current choice)
Any insight &/or suggestions from former N5 users would welcome
TIA
Maybe the Poco Phone?
Ich switched eine years ago from the n5 to op3 never regret it but my next phone won't be a one plus.

Poco not on my shortlist - apparently no B4 band (needed in Canada for LTE) . Thanks for suggestion tho.
Would you share why you've ruled out the One Plus ?
Of course. It's because they are getting damn expensive and more like the "hip and fancy" brands. I mean they have some benefits like the really good software and update support. But they started with under 300 € I think and now the OnePlus 6t will cost nearly 600€. Also the design ...the glass and the notch, it's horrible in my opinion.
If you are willing to pay that much the one plus is a good choice but if you can wait a half year you can buy the half year old Samsung phones. They get much cheaper in some time. The OnePlus won't. And if you root anyway you can flash AOSP on the Samsung. The worst thing is the bloatware on this devices.

Thank you for sharing ... which brings me full circle ... premium specs, timely software updates, no bloatware, and tolerable price point = Essential as the replacement for my N5 OR Am I just dreaming and going to be disappointed

I'm going through the same dilemma. All the phones I looked at (Oneplus 6, Moto C, etc) had their own problems! So for the moment I'm staying with my rooted N5 running lineageos 14.1 (Nougat). Seems the best and most secure option for now.....

i still have my nexus 5 and its working, but the battery life its so bad, i moved to the pocophone f1 at less than 400 dollars with almost all flagship specs its the nexus phone that we wanted cheap, full flagship features, and price performance that no phone offers currently.
Another alternative if you dont like the pocophone f1, its the Nokia 8 (2017), the only disadvantage of that you cant unlock the bootloader its pretty cheap at less than 400 dollars, the nexus pricing, premium performance and features.

As mentioned above Poco won't work for me :crying: as am in Canada and Poco does not support Band B to enable LTE.
Nokia's showing as Not Available on Amazon.ca Unlockable boot loader might be an issue Thanks for the suggestion Can you reference source of < $400 pricing ?
Not sure how long my Nexus will survive with current hardware issue ( sound only when it feels like it and doesn't feel like it more often than not).
Not hearing anyone saying they grabbed Essential ... maybe answering my question

I would recommend the zuk z2. Perfect replacement for my N5
I switched to a Moto X4 just a few weeks back from my trusty old Nexus 5. It's not a big upgrade, in a lot of ways, but you also don't lose anything you might with comparable phones (like a headphone jack).
As said, it's by no means a flagship device, but so far I'm happy with it, especially considering the 180€ price tag.

Have you considered self repairing? They N5 is easy to take apart and replacement parts are cheap on Ebay.
Google your sound problem. Sounds like a possible loose connection somewhere. May just need to disconnect and reconnect that part. That plus a new battery for $6 may give you a 'new' nexus 5.

I'm in my last days with my beloved N5! It is the best Smartphone, I've ever owned - it has been nearly 5 years. I replaced the battery a year ago with an (allegedly) original battery. Since a few months the battery life is worsening day by day. I'm running Lineage 14.1, which runs smooth and stable. Since a few days, the device turns itself off every now and then. I guess it's a hardware problem; I've openened it and tried to reattach every connection, without success.
I will be going for a Pixel 3 because...
- It seems to be THE ONLY flagship usable with one hand
- The most annoying thing with the N5 was the Camera in any lower light condition. Hence I opt for a top-notch-camera
- A big part of the good experience I had with the N5 was due to the great developer community. Software-wise I'm still (almost) up to date! I'm hoping that the Pixel 3 will last for at least 5 years... All the other phones with a strong community are just too large for me (Xiaomi, OnePlus, Moto G6...)
- It is reasonably easy to take apart; I will be able to replace the battery myself and in a few years the replacement displays wont cost a fortune anymore.
I know that the Pixel 3 is overprized, but considering, that the smartphone is the object I use the most in my life, I came to the conclusion, that i want to spend that money. And if I compare myself to some friends, who might not spend 900$ on a phone, but then buy a new 300-400$ Phone every 2 years, I will probably still pay less after all...
But again: I would go for a Xiaomi/Poco/OnePlus IF THEY WOULD STOP MAKING TABLETS AND START MAKING PHONES AGAIN!

I bought it and it is the perfect replacement! Same size, beast of a performance and also the best custom ROM development! It has about 8 Pie ROMs and has camera2api! I really love this device!

Have you considered sony xz2 compact? It is still a compact phone, not so recent I know, but with reasonable price...
Otherwise there is Xiaomi mi A2 lite, with Android One, and at 200$ I think it could be a good investment. Also it has great support.
I hope I'm in time for the suggestions!

Thanks, but you're too late
I'll get the Pixel 3 tomorrow. The XZ2 is nice, although a bit chunky. Sad they didn't bring out a xz3 compact together with the xz3...
The Mi A2 Lite is ok, but no flagship phone... The problem with the affordable brands is, that they essentially all design phones for the Asian market, where for many people the phone is at the same time their Computer and TV and hence bigger is better...
i got myself a Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite about a week ago because my nexus 5 really started to show its age after 4+ years, do any of you guys have this device/plan to get it?
if so let me know because i'm trying to get a community together for this device, it already has a TWRP port, and i started my bootloader unlock process (it told me i had to wait 15 days and it feels like forever lol)
i also posted a request in the new device request thread
hopefully we'll get our own place soon hehe
