NEW ROM adding functionality to the Moto Z2 Force via linux desktop - Moto Z2 Force Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello everyone!! my team and i have been working on a different type of rom for the Z family to maximize the total experience.
the world best modular phone deserves the best OS we can offer so we figured why rewrite the wheel we used a slightly modded kernel version of Los 15.1 and ubuntu 16.04 into a new operating system. the old/dying project Maru is coming back in this way, and better than ever.
if you guys are interested we would like to share the rom once it is ready for RC1, well let me know what you think and we just might make this new rom public very soon.

just a little bit of what this looks like

Unleashing
This seems like one of the only ways to unleash the power of the mods since google and Motorola wont allow the community to get the code for the mods. If you need someone to do nightly compiles, I will happily help.

Wow, this is great! I’ve been locked down with Verizon, running a stock Moto Z. Love the mods but miss playing with Roms. I bought a Z2 Force but still on VZ. I bought a Sprint Z2 Force last month and unlocked the boot loader and rooted the phone. I haven’t flashed any Roms yet, I just waiting for the right one to come along. I’m not a developer but have flashed Roms since the First Moto Droid. I’ll be happy to give feedback. My Sprint is not my main phone, its just for play. I do want to unlock the sim in a month and bring the phone over to my Verizon account.

Not a Dev but been rooting and modding since htc Evo and original Xbox. Would love to help in any way possible.

ok so i only have a Z2 as of now in the Z family what i would like to know is what apps do you wish came built into a custom rom the you have found useful while on a custom rom? the goal is to become stable asap and we are seemingly stable now but we really want to polish this up.
we have a few more phone we are getting ready to start build for too but this phone is the main focus right now we have one of the devs on the team running this on the international s9. if todays build is ready for prime time we will post it asap but we are trying to get the install instructions done since it is a little work after the install.

A kernel manager and a good file explorer.

@Kaesberg: Is this a full Maru (https://maruos.com/#/) rom? If so: AWESOME if not: ALSO AWESOME!

It's not the same it works like maru but runs Los 15.1 not stock Android like maru and is on Ubuntu 16.04 not Debian. This room work the same but is a little different.
We made more progress last night. Hoping that we will have all the bugs worked out after today's report sync.

the command center widget that displays both the Moto mod battery and the phones battery

Hopefully u can make it so u don't have to log in to your G account to do the initial startup. And I 2nd apps needed r a good file explorer and maybe an alternative market like ACC or mobolism.

Any update on the development? Would really like to give this ROM a shot!

Anything new?

so quick update:
this is an unofficial build of maru os and if anyone is willing to help with development i would greatly appreciate the help. i am stuck at this moment since the guys i was working with are very busy at this moment. if you are serious about helping this progress to a stable build i can get you access to my build server to get this up and running once more. my phone is the one and only as of now and i have been enjoying it very much testing all the possibilities with external hardware. Devs please dm me tester will be selected once the builds are ready for single zip installs.

[NAND][pre-ALPHA] Kovsky ICS 4.0.3 testbuild0

Based heavily on TeamICS' work on HeroC, here is some very early initial work on ICS for the HTC Kovsky, AKA Sony Xperia X1. Built from AOSP source, with source available.
This is NOT for the faint of heart, and as far as I know nearly everything is broken right now. Instructions for building are coming soon - meanwhile, source is available at https://github.com/Zorlin with bits from https://github.com/CyanogenMod and https://github.com/TeamICS
Credits:
- TeamICS for all their ridiculously awesome work on Hero/HeroC
- CyanogenMod team, on which some TeamICS work is based.
- IceDroidV2 for the installer and current (slightly modded) kernel/boot.img - see IceDroidV2 thread for appropriate credits and source.
Currently working:
- Boots!
Currently not working:
- Everything else
- ADB
Notes:
boot.img is made from applying the ICS porting guide to IceDroidV2's boot.img
Currently there's a "hack" to attempt to get adb working - I threw in a copy of busybox as /system/bin/sh. Need to work out a better way, since it really didn't work...
I've got a bunch of ideas, but it's late, so... here:

testbuild0 - "The Magic ZIP File"
I can't believe it. OMG !!
BUT
Is it really ICS or just some skin for android 2.3 ?

It's really ICS, which is why so little works. Gingerbread kernel for now, though.
woooaaaahhhh.....i love u full to all developers x1 the brilliant smart man ....kovsky never die !!!!
Do you really think you have enough background knowledge to get this off the ground? Or is it more of a "lets see what I can do" thing?

Yes and no. I think I can bring it to the same state as HeroC, maybe sans camera, and port hardware acceleration if/when they get it working. Kernel isn't my forte, though. At the moment adb is a major and confusing stumbling block... I'm missing something stupidly simple.
can we install it or it's not ready yet
I installed it that we install IceDroid v2 but nothing happened
It was stuck in android boot

You install IceDroid V2 first and then overwrite it... but no, at the moment this is just for developers and tinkerers.
oh damn how nice would that be!!!!
go ahead zorlin an thx a lot for your work
Hi Zorlin how is going ur work ?
Slow... lots of real-life stuff going on. I'll probably publish build instructions on the weekend so others can start contributing.
Haven't forgotten you guys though.
Hello. Any progress or updates of Your work?
Oh my god..
I hope this really happen....

Your signature shows that you have a own kernel for NAND for X1?
What is working etc? maybe you could share it, when it has benefits to the current published ones
EDIT: maybe you could join zargloub and midnight for kernel dev?

Hello @neoofoox.
Working everything except camera, fm radio and bluetooth (atm working on kernel to see where is problem).
Charging/discharging (at last I think it is ok as phone discharge within 20 hours->3.5 yrs old battery<- using push, wifi, bluetooth and location with 10-15 minutes of talking)
Also, phone wake asap You press power, ok or lock button (also with double security using pattern after normal unlocking)
I also don't think that this is right thread for something other than ICS work conversation.
When I got all things working proper, be sure that will make an new thread with image and patches to kernel.
BR,
Ramon
EDIT: Yeah, I will be happy to talk with @zargloub and @midnight regarding kernel.
EDIT2: Regarding sharing, I use only main system of Cyanogen but My own kernel, so as I say, until kernel completely work, I will not share it because of lot's of questions what users cannot fix until I fix holes inside kernel.
@fergy Last question ot jooc Does your phone reboots if you miss a call?
Sorry guys, I might be retiring my Kovsky... I'll publish build instructions and sources etc either way. If you don't hear back from me, assume I retired it
I'm getting fairly hopeful that you'll get decent ICS on the Kovsky soon though.
EDIT: Yup, it's official. I turned in my Xperia X1 in exchange for a free, off-contract Samsung Focus S (which I'm reselling) through the recent Microsoft promotion. I'll still have it for a week - I'm going to try and get ICS on it before then, but I don't really know what chances are like.
After that, I'll turn this over to someone else who can hopefully carry it through.

With these things working it is working perfectly, who need wifi if you can use mobile Data to access Internet and who needs bluetooth if you can send files via Email or connect your Phone via headphone port to your soundsystem etc..
I would test that if it becaume available and will report every bug etc. You could choose some people for testing which know something about that / for reporting bugs. So you can fix them and make the kernel 'perfect'.
Zargloub stopped developing and he has his files on gitorious so you could merge the kernels, here is working bluetooth and wifi (but it shows bad signal strenge)
Are you on github or gitorious so other devs can see what you are doing and maybe can help or people see what you are working on now.
I would love to test it, because for me it is allready perfect I hope we read something from you soon. You are our last hope
EDIT: sp3dev was also working on kernel you can get the sources here and here
EDIT2: I asked sp3dev if he would help, but he cannot for 2 reasons, first he has currently no time, the second reason is that he don't want to work on project which are close-source. Maybe you should think about releasing that before it is completely finished or make it open-source. Your device is old and that slow down the process a lot.

[Q] Slimkat ROM 4.4.2 beta weekly

While discussing this custom rom in other roms' threads, I came across one for the MB886 with CN localization.
I was able to download it and flashed. But before doing so, looked at the archive and noticed it had a /data directory with suspicious apps in it. So I wouldn't really recommend anyone actually flashing it for use until someone with knowledge took a look at it.
Interestingly enough, it does flash and seems to be working, I cleared data/wiped before booting it.. Take note that it's is not officially supported by slimkat nor is it available on their site.
EDIT: We have a working rom now thanks to Technofreak, check it out here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49622265
I finished compiling it to see how it goes. Will post ROM if is good.

Please delete the Links to this Chinese Rom from this forum and from the Cyan thread. THis Rom Contains Applications that require payments from the Google Play and its Developers. It contains apps like
Android Tweaker PRO
Root Explorer
NexMusic +/Plus
and others
Ok to my Fellow forum friend @clockcycle and others wanting this ROM I have made an Modified version out of this Chinese Rom which works 100% without any lag and is working great. I will make a thread for this one and there is also and right now is the one I use as it looks lots as Validus without much Clowns as @skeevydude like it. lol
Seen very solid to me and is my and will be my daily drive (For now) lol
Also there is one I compile together but since time limits I havent been able to test it. This one should have more options and few then other fixes to options that came after my Modified version
Will explain more at the Developers thread

Hi there folks!!
This phone dropped on my hands today from a friend of mine you is a excluded in this matters of customizing droid's...
So what I need to know it's the stuff that i should use to root it, like recovery and such, and the best overall rom to put in the phone. IF there is kitkat stable even better... If not Jelly Bean it is.
I'm not an expert, but i workaround pretty well, but i dropped on this forum today, and with so much stuff i don't know where need to look, and don't have the time to read it all.
So please, have some kind of goodness on me.

If none of the current data ia needed, then a nice clean full format to the New bootloader would be a good choice.
Use the AIO tool in the Developers section to format the phone to default new bootloader. you can follow the choices to install recovery, and download your choice of Rom.
The most stable and fully featured out of the newer roms are only the CM 10.1 roms. anything made later have camera and bluetooth issues.
Pengus has his own, Look ma no hands. its an excellent rom. along with his M1 kernel. its the latest you'll get to fully stable.
If you'd like more features, Tonyp made a T-build version 5 currently. use the same kernel from pengus again M1. and give that a go if you like customizing a bit more.
there are later roms. and they are all great, but they are still in development, with many bugs still to really work out.
you can also go Stock and try out the few very well made custom stock roms i believe there are 3 different dev's that have done work on ICS and did an excellent job of it.
Or you can stay on the old boot loader, and stick with GB if you really want to stretch out the battery life, and have every feature working.
the first few pages of the dev section would have everything I've just mentioned. but you could also use the Search for anything your having trouble with.
PM me also if you need more detailed assistance.

AOSP here? No wait... There???

I ask this because we are now in December. I have recently fired up an old Z1 and want to breathe new life into it. So I have been looking around for a while now. A few things I gathered.
: Sony supports custom roms and supplies everything needed for a rom.
: fxp.co makes roms but they have been inactive since October, does this mean their latest rom is stable?
: Sony have released some camera stuff yesterday but nobody has come forward and said they will take it and build with it.
Everything seems dead and as if no one wants to build further. I don't know how to build otherwise I would of done it my self by now and shared it.
Is this device dead? Is there someone who knows what they are doing going to release a build? I'm still on stock waiting for my first AOSP build to flash.
Coming from a motorola (Moto G 2014) that has a million roms build a day. This is weird for me to not have a rom to flash and use as a DD.
I'm coming off as a snotty kid here I know. I just want to flash some AOSP's... So thats the question... Are there any AOSP's that can be flashed and used as DD?
Thanks for at least trying to read this... Pece
Yeah it is a little dead around here unfortunately hahaha. I've tried all the CM/AOSP ROMs and from my experience almost all of them are good as daily drivers with no issues with the exception of the Marshmallow one currently being worked on.

So whick ROM do you suggest then?
On FXP they have this one : AOSP_L_MR1_151203_honami... I guess that is the latest one with the camera thingy that was published. 151203 means 3rd of Dec 2015. Right???
I guess I should just download and flash and answer my own questions
Thanks

Yea it does.
Up to you man, I personally just grab CM12.1 off the nightlies website http://www.cmxlog.com/12.1/honami/ and maybe also flash M5 kernel on there, which you can find in the development section.
I just want to say... I've been at it for about 4hours now... This is harder than I expected. I finally have a AOSP rom. FXP latest build... Finally have TWRP recovery... About to flash open g apps stock package... I hope it all goes well... This is way harder than the hundreds of other android phones I've done this with.
Edit : It seems that cyanogenmod is the only stable ROM I could get past setup with. After I installed Gapps. I installed Aroma Gapps and selected the apps I use. The Gapps run perfectly and Google camera seems to be pretty good and taking full 20mp shots. I'm impressed with CM12.1. It runs good. After doing an antutu benchmark to see if the performance is close to stock I see that it ,"Benched", Way more that stock. 43288 is my score on Antutu. I know bechmarks tell half a story but it seems to tell an interesting one... It seems CM12.1 is really great and with the Gapps I'm getting my ,"stock android", feels anyhow.
This was the toughest device for me to get a working custom ROM with. There should be a new thread detailing how, late 2015. To get a custom ROM working.
AOSP with FXP in no good for actual use. CM12.1 is really good.
I answered my own questions I wanted details too. I'll be using this CM12.1 Xperia Z1 as my DD and see if it works.

The first thing to do to stop projecting the image of a snotty kid is to read original development thread. You may surprise yourself finding plenty of custom roms including CM, Paranoid, Slimrom, DU and others. You can find kitkat and both versions of lollipop and every time custom roms were several months ahead of stock.
So, don't be shy and read.

I think this is a little harsh, flashing a new device can be quite overwhelming, especially if the forums are as inactive as they are here in the Z1 section.
But OP, there is a super long thread pinned about flashing and rooting for newcomers, you should check that out.

Little harsh? I don't think so. I don't appreciate it when freeloaders complain, especially when they don't know what they are talking about. The guy wasn't asking questions on how to flash, he basically came in and proclaimed that there are no custom roms for Z1, everything is dead and he is waiting for the first custom rom to flash. He clearly didn't bother to read and discover a multitude of custom roms for Z1. And by making that ridiculous statement, he has insulted everybody who contributes to Z1 development..
And by the way, what does "dead" mean? Inability to have updates twice a day? Lollipop has just recently became stable and marshmallows won't get there for at least a year. Plus, I am not sure that M is worth the effort: not much changed as compared to LP.

Yeah I agree with you, Lolipop is really good on the Z1, even if we do eventually get M I'm not sure it'll be worth the upgrade.

You miss understand. Let me explain. I went through all the custom roms threads. And I read the comments. The comments all speak of incomplete roms that have a major flaws in it. Camera not working is the main problem. I also did search the forum to figure out how to flash the Sony. The forum helped but it was scattered everywhere. Some solutions were not even in the Z1 page but in another Sony Xperia page. (The drivers not being accepted by newer windows) This thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440565 would definitely come in handy, I must of over looked it.
I am sorry if you think I'm clueless to this. But I have had about 5 phones that I've flashed custom roms on. Motorola, HTC and samsung. All those phones were easy. The Sony is very complicated because I couldn't get into the recovery, after following instructions from Sony and on this forum. Using EMMA to flash the recovery, Pressing the right buttons. I could not get it to work... But with fastboot I kept trying and somehow got it to flash TWRP recovery. Allowing me to install CM12.1
Flashing the FXP AOSP roms was easy. But that rom didn't work. Neither did the Recovery that came with it.
I Just wanted to know how to get this AOSP that Sony bragged about. But in essence it doesn't exist. Not in a functional form for users.
And I think that was my biggest problem. Understanding that the AOSP thing is not for me. Or others that want it as a DD.
*Edit After reading the replies and felt the need to refreshen my story. I understand there are lots of Custom ROMS. The whole idea here was that I was looking for AOSP that all the articles talk about. Sony releasing AOSP build for their phones. But it isn't exactly the full story. I was just looking for these Sony AOSP Roms... But I did end up with CM12.1... I was thinking about trying this Jaguar one that is so active as well. I'm not trying to rip on the custom roms the community was working on. I was justy trying to find Sony's AOSP. I'm sure the Custom roms are great. And I will eventually find the perfect one for me.

Stock rom or Custom Rom

Hello there,
I am using a google nexus 6. I am on nougat 7.1.1. But from the October security patch my phone is too slow. And now i got an idea to change to custom rom. I want to know which is best.. Stock Rom or Custom Rom? If Custom Rom which one you prefer? Please help me to find a good one.
Thanks!

There are no more official updates to the Nexus 6, so if you wish to upgrade the device further you will have little choice but to use a custom ROM. As for what ROM is best for you, that's a question we can't answer. The only thing we can tell you is to try them out to see which one is best for you. Now, as to what custom ROMs we prefer, let's rephrase your question so it reads, "If Custom Rom which one do you use?" as that is what you are actually asking. The responses you get will inevitably fall along the lines of "I use ROM X" anyway.
For example, I use Pure Nexus. It's not Android 8 although the developer has been working on an Android 8 version. However it has the right balance of features for me; it's not stuffed to the gills with features but isn't stock either. Naturally there are Android 8 ROMs out there, and right now the closest to Pure Nexus in having that balance of features is Validus. Even though Validus is officially still in beta it was a very stable ROM when I tried it out. So take a look at the ROMs available, try them out, and choose the one that fits best to you.

ok i apologize from both of you
 @achchu93
In my opinion :
7.1.2 : PN (Pure Nexus)
8: currently sixrom v2.1 good for me !
sourcebuilt oreo rom : more stable
GZR Validus : not use it now if your phone is encryption ! you lose all you data
this is my opinion It may not be right
sorry for my bad english

Thanks alot for your reply. I tried Pure Nexus with Franco kernel. You know both of them impressed me in a great way. after flashing franco kernal my phone is working like a jet. Really happy with this custom rom and kernal.
But still i see lot of people supporting dark rom. It is customized version of Lineage OS right? What do you think about that?
LineageOS is "lipstick on a pig" (look it up). They used Cyanogenmod as a base instead of starting over, meaning they used a base full of untested code. Because of that, it doesn't touch my devices.
The LineageOS devs should have started from scratch. It would have taken longer to get up and running, but the code would be clean and tested.
Well, if you want to keep yourself updated with the latest security patches (and probably features as well) then for this ageing phone, a custom ROM is better than stock all day long.
I'm using Dirty Unicorns 11.7.2, since is most up to date and very stable. PN is a good choice as well.
