Need help understanding Nokia 7 plus - Nokia 7 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi friends,
I just bought Nokia 7 plus yesterday and it's completely unknown to me, as of now. My last device was Xiaomi Mi A1 and I used it like hell. Used the device for custom ROM development. So, I knew everything about that device. But I need you help to understand the device a bit more. Can you guys let me know some cool stuffs that are hidden (if any) or some tricks to make the device more attracted. And I have a few questions. If someone could take a few moments and answer them, I would appreciate.
1. Is it worth switching to Andoid P beta or is Oreo more stable?
2. Is it necessary to get a screen protector or tempered glass or can the Gorilla glass resist scratch from dust particles or sand?
3. Does the ambient display consume more battery on Nokia 7 plus? On Mi A1, it used to drain a huge amount of battery.
4. I find the headpgone jack is a lit bit tight. It takes some force to plug and unplug a headphone. Can the force damage the headphone port?
5. Since unlocking bootloader is bot possible (without paying), I can't root and cant get Viper4android or Dolby Atmos. Is there anyway I can improve the music listening experience. I mainly use Spotify and Wynk music to listen to music.
6. Is there any way I can use Gcam on Nokia 7 plus. I saw people vould use Gcam on Nokia. But it doesn't work for me and keeps crashing (Im on latest July update).
7. Should I kill background apps manually to free up RAM (I used to use Greenify on Mi A1)? Or does Nokia 7 plus handle RAM management automatically and how good it is?
Thank you in advance for taking your time to read the post.

Greetings! Welcome among us! I also switched from Mi A1 and I didn't regret it at all (instead of the lack of bootloader unlocking). I'll try to answer to all of your questions with my best knowledge.
1. I have been using Android P developer preview for 2 months now and I have to say, it's very stable. Yesterday I got a new patch (V3.150), and I couldn't even tell that it's not a stable version. Perfect for daily driver. (Not all Android P features implemented yet though).
2. I'm not fond of screen protectors, but since my Redmi Note 4X fell down to face and shattered I've been always using 2.5/3D screen protectors from ebay. These types of screen protectors are the least disturbing since they aren't visible at all. (for example: LINK).
3. In Android P there is an option for always-on ambient display. That feature eats a LOT of battery. Other than that, you won't realize any battery draining.
4. It really shouldn't. Nowadays ports are supported from the inside of the phone with a strong slab-like stuff (don't know the name, sorry ). Tight is better than loose. My friend has a galaxy S6 and its jack is so loose sometimes the earplug falls out. Also, it will loosen a little bit after a while.
5. YES! Definitely. I use Equalizer FX Pro (it's worth its price!), which is reeeally great. Works with all music players (including spotify, of course). If you don't want to spend money on it immeiately, you can try the free version. Note: You'll have to disable stock Equalizer.
6. Yes, this site has all the GCam ports and many of them works. (LINK). Right now I'm using GoogleCamera-Pixel3Mod-Arnova8G2-V3_Aux-4.02.apk, which works on Android P as well, but actually if you update to P, you might see some improvements on the stock camera too.
7. RAM is meant to be filled, so it doesn't matter if your free RAM is 2.00GB or 3.00GB. Unless you run out of RAM, there is nothing to worry about. Suggestion: stay away from Instagram if it's possible. I've got plenty of apps on my phone, but Instagram eats by far the most RAM and battery. Even though I open the app once a day. Sometimes it drains 10% of my battery by only running in the background.
I hope I answered all your questions.

Thanks buddy. You have answered all my questions quite well. Just one question. Should I enroll for Android P beta program and wait for the OTA update? Or it is better to sideload anf flash the beta rom through ADB? Im not in a hurry anyway.

I opted my girlfriends phone in the OTA developer programme and she got the update 10 mins after, so if the OTA programme is not full, you should also get the update in such a short time. If you won't get it in about an hour, just download the sideload.

Defenitely not. It is also discussed on Nokia forum. But anyway, if you sideload back the oreo package, nobody can tell what you did

Hi,
i ordered the screen protector you mentioned at Point 2. I hope it fits better than my current one. Also with black edges but has this ugly marks and a slight rainbow effect.

Hi! Of course. You'll have to download the following zip: https://android.googleapis.com/pack.../29a06b8105e817828fb3403265a92489a7b681a0.zip
Download the required platform-tools, because you'll have to use adb. You'll also have to enter recovery mode (turn off the device, then turn on while holding down volume up button). Wipe the phone. Connect the device to your pc, enter sideload mode, open the command line, navigate to the zip file and then type in: "adb sideload <zip file name>". That should do it. If something is unclear, search for "nokia 7 plus oreo roll back" on google, and watch a video on youtube about it.

The reason for the "rainbow effect" is usually because the alcohol from the cleaning cloth is stuck under the glass panel. You have to clean the screen very thoroughly with the dry cloth after the wet one.

Thanks for the tip. But there was no alcohol left on the screen. I wiped it dry and rubbed it good with separate clothes after i degreased it with alcohol. This happened with 2 different screen protectors from 2 different companies. Both were this type with black margins. Befor that i had one fully transparent screen protector but the airbubbles on the side of the screen because of the gap bothered me. With that i had no issues like that "rainbow effect"

First impressions: Good tablet, dock issues

Hi,
for those that are still waiting to get their TF701 (or still need to take a decision ...):
I picked up mine yesterday (from CyberPort in Germany).
First impressions:
* Great tablet:
++ Amazing screen
++ Amazing CPU performance (better than SD600/Krait300)
+ Good RAM and I/O performance
+ Good GPU performance (but not overwhelming with 2560x1600 ...)
+ Good media playback capabilities (4k HW decode)
+ Good build quality
o Mediocre speaker and cameras (but better than TF101)
- I had a few spontaneous reboots (with 10.14.1.45)
* Mediocre dock
+ Reasonable keyboard (for that size)
+ USB3 works (and is faster than USB2)
o Mediocre feel (TF101 dock was better)
- Connection to tablet is loose ... (TF101 was *much* better)
- Occasionally no connection to dock after wake-up (removing and refitting always helps)
- Tablet seems to discharge first! (TF101 did discharge dock first which is better)
* Misc:
o Android 4.2.2 (with fixed signature bugs)
- No root yet (Asus allows you to unlock the boot loader in return for losing warranty, but noone has yet created the custom recoveries and ROMs to make use of this yet; a root exploit has not yet been reported anywhere that I could easily find yet either.)
+ There are reports that the next sys update (1.47) solves the spontaneous reboot issue, but breaks dock battery saving (disable wake-up with dock key)
o People complained about stuttering ... I've seen a bit but not enough to find it disturbing. Might be a balancing act with battery saving (e.g. how quickly do you start sleeping CPU cores or how quickly can you increase their clockspeed?)
o Some people have expressed concern that the GPU does not support all GL ES3.0 features (and thus is only ES2.0 compliant) -- this might become an issue for some (think high-end games a year from now or maybe GPGPU developers), not for me ...
So far so good. Hope this is helpful to some ...
Thanks for your report, I do very much want to pick one of these up and start porting linux. but i cant justify owning 4 different transformers... Someone will find a root exploit very soon, im guessing if everyone can already unlock a custom recovery/ cyanogenmod will be right around the corner.
If androidroot.mobi get a hacked bootloader for NvFlash working, i may just have to pick one up.
Excellent review! Not many people come on here when their happy with their device. We're a select few. Lol.

Impressions (after 4.3 update)
Hi,
my (WW) TF701 received the OTA update 10.26.1.7 on Wednesday and is now up to Android 4.3.

The 4.3 update did not change this. Still great performance -- AnTuTu and Gfxbench seem to be down a percent or two (which is within the measurement error), while the JS benchmarks (SunSpider, Kraken, Octane) seem to be up a few percents (also probably within the margin).

This is NOT solved by the firmware update (sidenote: Dock is at DOCK-EC32T-0205). I wonder whether that's my version of the reported connector issues?
Has anyone observed this as well?

Now at 4.3. Funny enough, they reintroduced the 9950697 signature bug. I was able to get a system shell with Cydia, but unfortunately not root. Looks like the nosuid protection of the filesystems stops the exploit. Maybe hacking Cydia to drop su to /ADF would work ...

lpdunwell made great progress. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516215
So if you unlock your bootloader (voiding your warranty), you can get it.
CWM recovery (beta ...) is available as well.
I have not done it yet, may need to RMA first b/c of my "dock battery not being used" issue.

Hey where did you get the upgrade from? Seems like 4.3 is only currently available for TW and WW SKU versions. Mine if from the US. Any drawbacks or problems if I were to install one of those to a US tablet version?
KGarloff is from Germany. It's available overseas. We don't get it in USA until November 18th...

I have received mine earlier this week, but I only had about 2 hours every day to play with it.
I was a bit worried after reading about all of the negative experience users had right outside the box, so I might consider myself quite lucky as I had none of the issues mentioned. One slight nuissance I am experiencing - sometimes the device takes aroud 4-5 second to wake up.
Other than that I am extremely happy.
This is my first tablet, so I might have had different expecations, I admit. I was considering new galaxy note, with £50 cashback at PC world they had very good price but seemed to be out of stock all the time. The 2014 Note is wonderful piece of HW, very sexy-looking and extremely poweful, also with S-Pen as a unique and fully-integrated feature.
What has won me over to Asus? I was quite inclined to Asus for quite some time now and I actually wanted to buy FT700, but then I found out that there is a new kid on the block so my decision was quite clear. As opposed to G Note, I like having integrated keybard functioning as an extra battery. The dock works very well, although materials used on the dock do not exactly scream "premium" to me and there is a slight issue with balance of the whole thing when docked an the screen tilted to max. On the other hand, I have my hand on the keyboard almost all the time when docked so for me it is OK.
I guess negative stuff is just yet to come, but let's hope not.
All in all I do not regretthis purchase.

I found doing a cold boot cured the wakeup delay.
Power off, restart holding down volume down and power, volume up once to select the android icon, and volume down to cold boot into android

Just got my S5

Just sold my note 3 to get an S5 and I am already regretting my decision. For anyone on the fence, the S5 offers a more polished and mature OS with big upgrades on the screen and camera but nothing else. Build quality is surprisingly good but the charging port cover is annoying and the location of the speaker at the back coupled with the waterproof feature makes everything muffled. I was pretty surprised as well that the whole back cover would vibrate whenever you use the external speakers. This makes holding the phone tiring if you're playing music and using it at the same time.
It's always one step behind the note 3 when it comes to responsiveness and the whole system just slows down becoming almost unusable when you try to download a lot of background apps and use it at the same time. This delay is prevalent with opening and closing apps, keyboard activation, scrolling down a big page. I had everything setup like my note 3 with the home button double click and my magazine disabled plus no transition animations.
Can anyone explain to me why I can edit stuff on my external storage with my old note 3 on 4.4.2 (using quickpic) and can't do it on the s5? I understand it's a feature of kitkat but I had no problems whatsoever with my old nexus 5 and N3. This is a pretty big dealbreaker as I absolutely detest google/samsung stock gallery.
Oh and samsung just decided to axe application shortcuts on the lockscreen one of the best features on touchwiz unfortunately

wait you mean if you try and do too much on it it slows down?
thats ridiculous

I was checking the review of the s5 over at anandtech and it seems the internal read write speed is indeed slower than most phones. Compared to the note which can read and write 20 percent faster. Maybe that's why it was stuttering like crazy when I had a lot of apps being downloaded and syncing

I second what he said, but if you have the D415 use the variant provided by @shinobisoft. This phone doesn't really need a case, although then again, technically none of them do. I have a fosmon case that @TomJ2 mailed to me. The screen is pretty durable, so protectors aren't necessary.
Welcome to the forums
Good on stock. Great on CM 11!

I second what he said, but if you have the D415 use the variant provided by @shinobisoft. This phone doesn't really need a case, although then again, technically none of them do. I have a fosmon case that @TomJ2 mailed to me. The screen is pretty durable, so protectors aren't necessary.

Take a look at installing ViPER4Android to DRAMATICALLY improve audio quality. If you go with CM 11, make sure to select ViPER4Android from the "sound" settings menu, "Music Effects". I installed it as a system app on both the stock ROM and CM 11 to reduce "popping", which happens occassionally on CM 11.
After I installed xposed, I went ahead and installed the "master key multi-fix" and the "fake ID fix" security fixes. Not sure if that was necessary, but, better safe than....
3 days after I bought my L90, I watched, in slow motion, as my phone landed screen down on ashpalt shattering the glass. Naturally, I bought a case and screen protector for the second one. The case is.... somewhere, not protecting my phone. I like the screen protector though.
Enjoy!

I got one of those with the phone right now, I just activated it and all,and it's working well a few bugs here and there and it runs good, Thanks for the welcome man.

I tried viper 4 android for my another phone before it cracked, the audio quality boosted like crazy man, bass is awesome and the song clearly is dope beyond measure, and on the id fix I'll definitely keep that in my list.

If not V4A I wouldn't even try to listen music on this phone. Convolver response samples are just the creation of God, combined with other setting give unimaginable sound, even with 128 kb mp3

Post your questions for XZ3 owners here.

I got the XZ3 on launch day and I'm pretty confortable with my technical knowledge. If you guys have any questions or requests (such as running commands and dumps), please post them here. I'll probably edit this post with a mini-review if I have the time this week.

Any idea how to bring back double-tap on the XZ3?? Sony removed it since the Xperia X, but I'm wondering if there's a way to bring it back or if you've heard/read anything to indicate they might bring it back??
Thanks!
Does anybody know why Sony phones don't support the Google Camera ports? I checked on my XZ3 that camera api2 is supported fully! What is it holding back? No devs doing it or a Sony specific restriction?
With gcam support this XZ3 would be the perfect pixel 3xl alternative without notch!

Simply activate the always on screen. Then you can use double-tap to wake.
Gcam needs Raw support that's why HDR+ doesn't work on Xperias

Ok thanks!
Just wish they had double-tap to sleep again too. Not sure why they would remove that?
Hello,
I have several questions for xz3 users
- what about SOT? why no one completes that forum section?
- when you activate stamina mode, does it turns off all vibrations? (including ringing/notification vibrations?) - that is how stamina acts at my old Z2,
- a user in sonytalk forum, mentions soemthing like a gap between screen and body. can someone install a pressure app to see if there is a gap for real?
thank you

- The SOT is worse for me than the XZ Premium and Pixel 2 XL which I've have for several months. I'll get back to you with some numbers on monday if they matter that much to you.
- Stamina mode now has 3 modes, 4 if you count ultra stamina. They indeed, turn off vibrations, but I haven't checked all of them.
- Yes there is a gap between the metal frame and the glass panels, both on the front and the back. I suppose this is done to provide impact absorption when you drop the phone. Look for HTC U11 drop tests if you need to know why these things exist. That phone is perfectly smooth, has no ridges, but also cracks very easily.

Hi Geo,
I returned my XZ3 due mostly to the camera being a step-down from the XZ2 P. Didn't play around with the phone as much as I should have, but ok I'm glad to hear that Stamina Mode still lets you configure how it saves the battery. Not every phone does that I think.
Battery life seemed really good though I didn't get to test it all that much.

SOT: With ambient display set to always on: 3 hours
With ambient display set to smart activation: 5 hours
With ambient display set to off: 6.5-7 hours.
^above tests with wifi on all the time, with about 30 minutes LTE usage
Gap: Gap is present, but still water resistant. Phone fell into the tub while I was giving my dog a bath (I was talking on the phone with my mom).
Sorry, I've misread previous post, nvm
Has anyone tried this phone on Verizon yet? I know they say it won't work, but if it has the right LTE bands it just might.
I own a xz3 for a week now and i'm having some problem with lagging on homescreen with nova and stock launcher... Anybody else experienced this... When i restart phone it's normal lag free again?

If it doesn't go away soon I'd run Sony Companion on it. Just download it to your PC then connect phone to PC when it says to and do a system repair or whatever.

No i think this is pie related.. Nobody have this issue?
I am experiencing no lag but I'm on stock launcher, no Nova. I also disabled a bunch of apps (Facebook, all Google apps except maps and YouTube) and Netflix. H9493 which has 6GB RAM.

Just bought the OnePlus 6T from T-Mobile. Gonna throw the GCam mod available here on XDA onto it too once I get it. OP seems to be more on the color accurate side than the likes of Samsung, Apple, etc. Maybe Huawei too. Getting $300 off ($580 is total price) for trading in my V30, so not bad! lol Plus the software is fantastic (like Sony) and their charger (Dash charger) is simply the best, and I can CONFIRM first-hand that it definitely outdoes Quick Charge 3.0. But let me allow the lady to explain it better. lol
I could've got something like the P20 Pro, Note 9, or Pixel (all of which have T-Mo Volte btw, unlike the XZ2 P ((F U SONY!! lol))), but I felt like there's a strong chance I'm gonna upgrade again next spring cuz we got the XZ3 Premium, S10+, OP7, and P30 Pro coming out around then. So why get something overly expensive? lol All are expected to be incredible phones. But we know which one I'M hoping to have (if it doesn't P me off like the XZ3 did that is lol)!
Enjoy, see you on the Premium forum in the spring
Play hard, go Plus
Has anybody received 1 year of playstation+ within the lounge app. I bought the phone on day one and i'm still waiting.
At least here in Germany they advertised one year of free ps+ membership for ealry adopters.
Anyone else get this issue where if you restart the phone, the "last full charge" in the battery > settings menu says something like 30+ days ago? @madphone @augie7107

Mine currently says three hours ago which is accurate. After restart is shows "0 minutes ago".

Specific features in X2 Pro

Hey guys,
my mi9t was dead recently and i'm in the market for a new cheap phone. I resisted realme for a long time due to color os until someone pointed it out that the new realme ui is better than miui, so i am going to give it a try and stumbled upon how cheap the x2 pro is given its spec.
Well since specs arent everything and there are many little things not covered in reviews, i would like to ask if
1. it has AOD and is it customizable
2. Does it have screen off hands off ok google, i use it a lot
3. since it is using in display fingerprint sensor i made the mistake of not backup-ing the resist partiotion in mi9t making it almost useless. Do i have to do the same thing and is it bootloader unlockable? i saw quite a lot of custom rom available and thats kinda good
4. is there any small things i need to know like build quality, lagginess
Thanks
It's a good phone overall. I am using CN version, however I recommend you get the EU version to get full gapps support.
Yes AOD on realme UI is fairly customizable. You can choose what to show and the clock. Display format and style. Beyond that not really.
EU version has the all google apps as far as I know but please double check.
Bootloader is easily unlocked. Rest i am not sure.
Built quality is superb. Battery 0 to 100 percent in 36 minutes. No lagginess with stock. Pretty fast boot due to UFS 3.0 (not all variants have this so pls. be careful when ordering/buying). People say cameras are ok and not great. For me upgrading from LG V20, they definitely are better. Also you might have to disable smart power saver for apps to work correctly i.e send notifications pop ups etc. Maybe that's only for CN version.
I hope this helps.
