cell tower issues - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

My grandfauther has a droid turbo, and as of late it has been dropping calls, not reciving them, and not able to send calls out, plus the battery is getting really bad. Is rooting this and installing twrp going to help me in any way?

A lot of Droid Turbo batteries are going bad as the phone was released in late 2014. Even over in the custom ROM threads that's a common complaint, about phone shutting off even with 50% battery supposedly showing. There are battery replacements you can buy and YouTube videos showing how to do it. But it's not for the faint of heart. If you try to do it yourself you can mess up something internally, like the temperature sensor.
Rooting and installing TWRP will get you more current security updates and features with a custom ROM, but won't necessarily solve call sending/receiving or battery issues. A factory reset might solve the calls issue.

Almost been a week with the X1...

I've had my X1 for almost a week now... And starting to get a better impression of the phone. Prior to buying the phone, I had read many reviews and forums and weighed my options, X1, Nokia N95, E71 (not comparable), as well as the HTC Diamond. I am on Rogers network in Canada.
I have installed:
Xperia Tweak 2
Touch Response
Vista hide Battery Gauge
Youtube for X1
Youtube Panel
SPB wireless monitor
SPB Mobile Shell
Facebook Panel
And I think thats about it.
So far I've used the phone mostly for calling, email, SMS and Facebook. I've had limited browsing experience. But found it to be somewhat slow.
After almost a week, I am comfortable using the phone and found alot of things I really like about it. But thats not to say I find it free from flaws. In fact I have found several that are now starting to be inconveniences.
At first I had the OZMAIL problem some have had, and it began as soon as I installed my SIM card into the X1 and turned it on. This was a non-hardware related issue, but stressful to say the least. Problems gone.
When using my SMS, I have difficulty getting SMS messages, as many people text me but I dont get them. As well, my phone sends old messages after soft resets, but these messages were apparently sent almost 12 hours prior. And they are re-sent messages as they were received when sent.
The signal quality is stressful, as I will be standing in a variety of places and be told my text could not be sent, or I have little to no signal at all, both for texting and emailing. Calls have been okay, with obvious inability to get signal when in some dead areas. Battery life seems to be lasting about 24-30 hours on a charge. Mind you I dont make alot of calls.
The one side of the slider, where the optical joystick is, feels loose, and slightly more play in it than the other side, and am wondering if I should address the problem sooner than later.
The things I like about the phone, I like alot and there are too many to list. But the little things make it stressful for me at times. I am going to call Rogers to see if I cant figure out the Text problem, but I am wondering if I should just return the unit for another, or maybe seek a totally different device. Anyone have any pearls of wisdom they would care to share?

what rom are you using?
make sure its flashed to the newest official rom at the very least. (although I'd recommend flashing a custom rom.)
you can also try flashing different radio roms to get a better signal.
but if you're in an area that other phones have decent reception(on the same carrier) its possible your X1 is defective.?
When I checked the firmware, it was R3A im pretty sure. I havent thought of flashing to roms yet. My phone is now telling me I have 2 new texts, and I deleted them all, and it still says 2 new messages. I think a new rom is needed...
Standard ROMs don't have that SMS problem. It is most likely one of the additional programs you have installed. Third-party software is most likely the culprit when phones start acting funny. Uninstall them one-by-one to see if the problem clears up (I would start with uninstalling Touch Response).
What about this?

[Q] random reboot/mms bug?

Hi there,
just wondering if anyone else are having issues of their phone randomly rebooting? does anyone know of a fix?
also, sending photos as an attachment does not work. in order to send a photo to anyone on your contact list.
found a work around by going through gallery and sending it directly from there.
if anyone know of a fix for either issues. the help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
kevin
I've had several random reboots. Oddly enough, they usually occurred overnight when I wasn't using the phone. I would hear the vibration on my windowsill and saw it was rebooting. I did a factory reset yesterday and while in the midst of setting everything up on my phone, it rebooted again. I thought that maybe there was too much going on and it overloaded. But last night when I was out and not using my phone, it rebooted again. I'm gonna have to go to Verizon to swap the phone.
It keeps happening on mine, but almost always in the car while attached with BT. I'm wondering if BT has something to do with it, in my case.
Same thing
I am also experiencing the issue specifically at night. I have yet to actually have it interrupt me in anything but its still a concern. Just curious about whether for those of you who are experiencing it are using the Assist app or Android Assistant?
I only use the Assist app for when I'm in the car. It's not setup for night time. I exchanged my phone at Verizon today and so far so good. One of the employees tried telling me that the reboots could have been because I had Better Battery Stats installed on my phone and the battery saver apps can conflict with the OS. I blew his mind when I told him that BBS wasn't a battery saver app and simply lets people know about specific wakelocks. Seemed like no one there had any idea this phone even existed.
For the reboots, I guess tonight will be the big test.
It happened again to me this morning as soon as I got in the car and it connected to Bluetooth. Once it reboots, it's solid.

Please report back. I have gone 24 hours without a reboot with no changes to the device which is a first. If it doesn't have a Samsung or Apple logo no one seems to care anymore.
I can't get Assist to work at all. I typically listen to podcasts in the car and when texts come in I get a notification sound but I've never had one read to me. I disabled Assist to see if this was the cause of my Bluetooth reboots, and it's not.
With Assist disabled entirely, each time my phone pairs with Bluetooth it connects but the moment I start to play something it reboots. It's very consistent.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I haven't had any reboots with the new phone. I exchanged my old one for this one on Monday and so far everything's been good.
I have now had 3-4 random reboots that I have seen. I have also witnessed a complete lock up of the phone. I will be heading into Verizon today to exchange my phone.
Just wanted OP to know more people are having issues.

Delayed or not receiving Notifications?

Hi everyone,
I have had the Moto G 2nd Gen for about 10 days now and I have noticed that notifications from several apps (Exchange email, Gmail, Whatspp, Facebook...) are either delayed by a few hours or don't come at all. This happens on both Wifi or my network. Has anyone else experienced this ?
I have tried the following with no success:
1- disable Wifi optimization
2- factory reset phone
3- Installed PNF No-Root and set hearbeat to 5min
4- Cleared data & cache of apps
My phone is not rooted running 4.4.4
Thanks
Yes I am having the same problem this is my thread on the subject:http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/notification-problems-t2875216
I have tried 1, 2 and 4 of your attempts to fix it to no avail.
Before I reset the phone all notifications showed the correct time that they should have come, for example if I slept the phone at 10:40 and a notification came at 10:44, I then woke the phone at 10:50 the phone would immediately buzz and sound but it would say the notification came at 10:44 in the notification draw.
However after the factory reset of the device in the same situation the notification draw would show 10:50 but I know that is wrong because WhatsApp for instance will say the correct 10:44 timestamp on the message in the app.
Notifications when the phone is awake come through perfectly every time.
The problem is actually not limited to just notifications, I play music from my phone, when the the phone is awake it plays perfectly, when you sleep the phone, the music will carry on playing but occasionally it will have a hiccup where it will stop playing for a split second then carry on, and sometimes at the end of a song you expect the next song to start but it never will, if you then wake the device the song will start playing like nothing was wrong (exactly how the notification problem is).
I don't know what the problem is I suspect something to do with bad software or faulty hardware if there is a specific part of the hardware that only comes into play when sleeping (I don't know if there is or not).
What are the specifics of your phone? Mine is a XT1068 8GB Dual SIM Retail GB completely stock 4.4.4, the system version is: 21.11.14.titan_retgb.retbgall.en.GB retgb, will be good to know if this affects specific versions of the phone or any version, to narrow down the problem.
The problem is also completely random I cannot 'make' the problem happen it just does.
Mine is the same as yours XT1068 8GB Dual SIM Retail GB 21.11.14.titan_retgb.retbgall.en.GB retgb.
I also have the same problem with music, I also noticed this with chromecast, it seems to loose connection after playing one track.
I contacted Motorola assist and they said replace the phone. I'm not sure if replacing it will solve the problem, I'm guessing this is a software issue. I
I got it from Amazon UK, I'm thinking of returning this and going back to my Galaxy Nexus and wait for the new Nexus phone.
Because we have the same software version I more strongly suspect this is a software issue now, I'm not sure what to do, I don't really want to return the phone as I will be left phoneless and a replacement would just come with the same software.
Another option would be to re flash to a different software version (an international version) but that will invalidate the warranty.
Not really sure what to do, would be good hearing if any retGB people are not having any problems, if any are reading this thread? or if any non retGB are having this problem.

:\ it doesn't look like that app fixes it even when changing the interval to 1min.
I've sort of found a way to at least make it happen to test stuff, using 2 devices I have installed Telegram on both and set each device up with different numbers so I can message from one device to the other, using the other device to the Moto G if I send messages sometimes the notification is instant, sometimes it is a minute later, there is no pattern on whether it will receive it instantly or delayed, however waking the device will always make the phone buzz if it is delayed.
If I add my tablet into the mix (tablet and Moto G on the same number) the difference is very stark, sending 5 quick fire messages the tablet buzzes for every message, the Moto G may buzz for the first and maybe the 2nd but then nothing for the other 3, or none at all, or none and then double beep on the last message or a little time after the last message. (all this is on WiFi)
The best news is that it has eventually beeped within a couple of minutes for every message, but in a conversation on WhatsApp a couple of minutes is a long time.
Again if the phone is awake or playing music while sleeping it works perfect a beep for every message every time (WiFi Again). (I know PNF is only a partial fix for WhatsApp and Telegram but I can't test it easily with Gmail and the main concern is WhatsApp as I want those messages without delay)
It's definitely something to do with keeping the phone 'active', if it's playing the music it works, if it's doing nothing it is literally like it's sleeping on the job.
I'm going to test on 3G but seems to work almost perfect so far (I haven't really used my phone on 3G much as I'm normally on WiFi)
@katkat911 can you tell me about your WiFi setup it isn't TP-Link is it? because I'm wondering if it could be a WiFi setup issue as my phone originally couldn't even detect my router until I changed some settings. (I know you have the problem on 3G too)
Apologies if this is a bit rambly I want to put my casual findings out there in order to let others have the information.
Been testing on 3G, after the phone is slept all notifications work perfectly for 10 minutes with the phone buzzing a second or 2 after my tablet, if you sleep the phone and send a message after 10 minutes the phone will only buzz after 30 minutes from being slept (ie the heartbeat).
I've reinstalled PNF app and will experiment more tomorrow, still not sure how I will fix WiFi but I think a little more experimentation is required (yet doesn't make sense why my tablet always works 100% and the phone doesn't when using the same router)

I agree with you that it has something to do with phone going to sleep. My WiFi router is Netgear. I have they same problem with every other WiFi network and also on 3G. I didnt have this problem on my previous phone Galaxy Nexus.
PNF doesnt seem to work at all.
Notification problem is proved. I also have the issue. that 10 mins theory is absolutely right. as both of you have done good research, I would suggest one of you create a question at https://forums.motorola.com/hives/e3ec93b1d7/summary and summarize all your findings. Some one from Motorola will respond definitely. I see this as a deep sleep issue with the kernel. Once submitted, you can share the link of your thread here. I and others will comment confirming this as a common problem.
You may have to first register with your moto id or may be google id.

I have posted this on the Motoral forums here https://forums.motorola.com/posts/dbb4806484
I have been experimenting again today, the problem is significantly worse on WiFi notifications are much slower than on 3G, the problem seems completely unreplicable, sometimes notifications come though aOK even after I have left the device sleeping for an hour (using WiFi) or sometimes the notification will be delayed for several minutes even if it has only just been slept (again using WiFi), 3G on the other hand there is a definite 10 minute cut off from sleeping the device.
I've had PNF installed since last night and it doesn't help WiFi at all, but 3G it might, I say might because sometimes after 10 minutes (even an hour later) if I send a notification I do receive it straight away (something that never happened before I installed PNF) but then sometimes it doesn't and it's delayed for several minutes again.
I will join the Moto forum and add my weight to that when I get back to my computer as you need to sign in with a Google account.
I've also noticed that if the phone is sleeping whilst charging notifications work flawlessly in much the same way playing music while the device is sleeping they do. I've posted this finding in the Moto forums as well.
Fingers crossed we get a solution :fingers-crossed:

I have also noticed that. It seems that many are having this issue, so far no reply from Motorola
Motorola might be investigating about it. Yesterday i went back to dalvik from art. I tested the notifications the while day. On Wi-Fi, i didn't see the delays any more. In 3g many tests were successful even after 1hr of deep sleep. Only at 4pm India time i found a delay of 22 mins for whatsapp notification. There i also realized that it had switched to 2g due to bad signal in that room. I was definitely having problem when i was on art. Last night i also got the ota for build 23. I see that the kernel is updated. I will monitor one more day and report here.
Motorola has at least seen the post even with no reply, I just hope they are busy behind the scenes working out what is wrong so they can fix it.
I've never used ART (I'm completely stock), and all the problems are still happening today, unfortunately Telegram is being DDoS'd today so haven't been able to test anything out.
It will be interesting to hear if the update you received helps in any way, esp with the updated kernel, since your retGB device received it hopefully ours may do soon too.
As far as I can tell it doesn't affect calls and SMS, but I simply don't use SMS or calls at all (WhatsApp ftw) so my testing has been the odd 'prank' phone call from my 2nd phone and it rings every time, but it's not enough to confirm if it's a fluke or if in fact it does not affect phone calls/SMS.
SMS and calls won't be impacted due to this. It's mostly related to deep sleep state of the phone. It will impact data connectivity mostly.
I have been testing as and when possible after the update. On Wi-Fi, I didn't see any delays for WhatsApp, Facebook notification, exchange mails through nine app even if the phone was in sleep mode fur an hour or so. I saw 1 min delay in Viber twice.

In a different thread Motorola amin had mentioned that they are investigating the notification delay issue. I don't see much delays after the update. There are few mins here and there, but mostly good. If you haven't received the update yet, check the ota thread and update manually. It's the same update. Then see if you find any improvement.
I got the OTA update yesterday and I'm still having the same issues

Freaking problems after upgraded to 5.1 lollipop

To all you guys who had upgraded to 5.1 and not located in the US, did you faced these 3 problems?
1) when dialing 1800 numbers, the stupid phone app automatically input a + in-front of the 1800 and straightaway dialed to the US. Is there anyway to prevent the phone from adding the "+" sign whenever it detected "1"? I know this is a verizon phone but is there a way to fix this nonsense? I have been billed for overseas calls so many times even after hanging up the phone within 1-2 secs upon hearing American accent voice msgs.
2) battery drain problem had became more severed. Left 10% after 7 hrs of usage. Before 5.1, still got 40% after a whole day usage.
3) When the phone is locked and someone called, the phone will ring but no way to pick up the call until the phone is unlock.
Damn pissed off at motorolo for releasing a half-f*** update. Until now it is almost two months and still no fixes.
After the update my phone has been utter **** and i live in the US. I have the same battery drain problems as you, and i get the black screen of death, where the phone wont come back from deep sleep. I really wish moto didn't rush this update even though the public out cries were pressuring them for the quick release. For the love of all that is moto and remotely turbo they need to go back and make a stable rom for us or at least unlock our bootloaders so our highly competent xda developers can work on some custom roms that correct these unprofessional releases. This might be the last exclusive device i ever purchase from Verizon.

Nexus 6 Signal Loss

Yes, this time old issue still exists for me, and it makes it where I cannot trust the phone. I've wanted to use my Nexus 6 as a daily carry, but have to use my LG G3 instead.
The N6 completely drops cellular signal after the screen turns off and goes into deep sleep. After waking the phone, it requires a reboot 90% of the time to get it to reconnect to cellular service. Rare occasions I can leave it for a few minutes, toggle airplane, and get it to reconnect, but by then a reboot is faster. Obviously, a phone that drops cell service when the screen is off is no good.
The fun thing is not ONLY is it dropping cell service, it maxes out the cell radio searching. If I don't notice it dropped service, the phone gets hot and the battery dies very quickly, this also happens in AIRPLANE MODE. Yes, even when airplane mode is on, I turn the screen off, cell service "dies" and the radio kicks on and searches for signal, gets hot, kills battery, all while in airplane mode. The battery information page shows blank for the signal meter while in airplane mode screen on, but turns red and shows indication the radio comes on when the screen is off.
The only "solution" I have is to constantly play music, or have it plugged in. Currently I have an 8 hour mp3 of pure silence playing on repeat. Naturally this keeps the phone locked at 300Mhz while the screen is off and never sleeps, but the cellular radio works as normal, stays cool, and battery drain is minimal, never disconnects. The problem is: doing anything that causes said silence to pause and not noticing/remembering. Watching a video, casting something, rebooting, etc. Also the phone never sleeping is generally not good, but I can't trust the media player not to sometimes stutter and then the signal drops out. You see my trust issues. While the phone is plugged in, which also prevents deep sleep, the phone is fine as well.
Oddly enough SOMETIMES the phone does as it should. I might check the phone and notice music is *not* playing, but the signal is fine, and the device has been in deep sleep with no problems. I've yet to isolate what causes it to stabilize, but after a reboot, it's back to its old ways.
Things I've tried:
Flashed ALL the official images. (Problem exists across them all.)
Tried a few custom roms
apps that hold a wakelock. (trying to keep it from sleeping, which worked, but signal still disappeared)
Removing, downgrading, upgrading, etc Google Connectivity Services.
Different basebands
Different carriers.
Other things I can't think of now.
Current Setup:
Pure Nexus (latest)
System mode root + Xposed system mode
Bootloader: moto-apq8084-71-21
Baseband: D4.01-9625-05.39+FSG-9625-02.113
Attached a logcat of it dropping signal after screen off, and luckily caught it regaining signal as well in the same logcat.
EDIT: Alright, can I get a moderator to move this threat to Q&A. I posted in Q&A and it appeared in General... Guess that's what I get for having multiple tabs open.

yes, this seems to be issue with N6.. (issue is somewhat related to SIM card). Can you try without SIM card inserted?
Just sell the phone. Dont waste nerves trying to devug it.
I had similar issues, but switching to 2G helped.
To be honest, these smartphone issues have been things i have experienced with all brands.
From random reboots with samsung, cellular issues with LG to phantom clicks with sony. Not acceptable given the price.
So far, every smartphone has caused issues.

I'm not the type of person to sell something with a known issue, that's as bad as selling a car that you know the transmission is about to go out. Since it's not my main phone, I don't let it really get my nerves, instead I use it as a brain teaser. Finding new and interesting ways to get it to keep working, but at the same time I would like to find an actual fix. In case I ever want to... y'know... sell it. I'm not going to sell a defective product. I have the experience and knowledge to actually use it, and on Fi it's a good backup. The wifi doesn't cut out so it still works if I'm around wifi.
Also, replying with "Meh just sell it" is a very unprofessional and indecent response on a large forum dedicated to helping people and making their lives with their phones easier, and learning new things along the way.

I never said that you shouldnt disclose that the phone is defective.
I assume that goes without saying.
Secondly, my experience has been that such issues are unfixable.
When i had an LG phone with issues, the solution was to sell it as scrap/defective device.
From the looks of it, your issues are unique. I also have issues with connectivity and the solution was to switch to 2G.
However, it only happens with one network operator.
Also, this is a forum, you asked for advice, i gave it to you. You dont have to like it.
Oddly enough without any system changes or anything and with how long the problem has stood... It seems to be acting correctly now. Doing some tests with reboots, etc and it seems to be going to sleep fine and not losing signal. Will continue to monitor this oddness and if I figure anything out, I'll update this thread for any of those who might still have this issue.
