Note 9 screen compared to Note 8 - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

I was just watching Erica Griffin's unboxing video on YouTube. I noticed the note 9 has borders around the sides of the display.
Can anyone compare the two notes or confirm this please?
Looks to me that they probably put those borders there for those that used to ***** about light bleed and reflection.

Note 9 has slightly wider side borders/bezels. The bottom (chin) bezel is shorter, about half as tall as the Note 8. The top (forehead) bezel is the same size as the Note 8. Overall, the Note 9 has slightly MORE bezel % than the Note 8, but very slightly (not enough to notice). But that is because they went with a tad bit wider side bezels. Which personally I am OK with. I think the sides with the curves could have used a little more protection on the N8. Plus my N8 is a tad too narrow and tall - feels a tad off in my hand. The Note 7 hit the absolute sweet spot for feel in hand. The Note 9 feels a bit better in hand (I have had a store demo model I have played with) than the Note 8. It is just a little wider, a little shorter and feels a little better balanced. I do wish they had cut the top bezel down in size, but oh well.

Oh right thanks, so it wasn't my imagination seeing bezels on the side of the Note 9 screen.
Would you say the Note 9 has a wider more usable screen area?

From my hour or so comparing them, yes, the N9 has slightly more width to utilize. Again, it's not a huge difference, but side by side it is definitely apparent.
If I had my wishes, they would do away with the curved edges completely. I think the curved edges create more issues than they have positives. I turn off all edge functions. IMO, Samsung has clung to the curved edge design because it is its trademark design/differentiator from other phones. But as far as usefulness, I think it needs to go away. The curved edges are by far the most liable to be broken in a fall, and it is extremely hard to get a good tempered protector to fit on the curves and stay on. The Note 9 seemed to have slightly less curves to the edges, which is a trend I see Samsung going with, eventually doing away with the curved edges. In any case, this display has a little more usable width to use the SPen width at least.

Confirm Note9 has thicker bezel at curved edgea. This will be good the cases + screen protector

I would love to see the curved glass edges done away with on the Note series. It does interfere with the spen while writing close to the edge and makes good TGSP's hard to find. I still would use the edge soft software though, got used to it on the S7E after they took both my note 7's back.

That's fantastic if they made the curve less agressive than before.

Yeah, they definitely did. Many reviewers mentioned it.

probably for better, struggle with stylus sometimes if i get too close to curved edge it just slides off
like others said should be easier to apply screen protector ttoo

The problem is that the Redmi Note 4 has a slightly curved screen, no cheap tempered glass would cover all of the screen, unless there's a specially designed curved tempered glass for this phone, which not gonna be cheap, like this $55 one from Zagg for the Galaxy S7 Edge: http://www.zagg.com/us/en_us/invisi...xy-s7-edge/glass-curve-samsung-galaxy-s7-edge
Personally I use a no-brand $1 tempered glass, cheapest one I could find, because in my experience with a tempered glass protectors, I would usually dent, chip, or break them in 3-4 months time (that's why I ordered 3 of them in one go). But with that said, I always wondered how is the quality on the Nillkin, as they sell their tempered glass for almost $10.
Does anyone know, which protection glass xiaomi used if any for redmi note 4? Thnx.
Hi All,
I received this Tempered glass screen protector as a gift upon purchase of my phone.
As you can see from the pics attached it is around 3mm short of the edge all the way round, I understand that you need to take into account the 2.5 curved edge but it doesn't even come close to that edge.
I haven't put it on yet as it feels quite thick & I would think it feels quite bad when your finger drops off the edge.
Can someone else that has received a glass for the RN4 upload pics of theirs & compare the gaps, I'm wondering this one is wrong & not for the RN4.
Edit:
Added pic without the Tpu cover on the phone for comparison.

You think yours is bad check mine out!! Messaged the seller (via ebay) and they sent a new one in the post, only problem is that its exactly the same, so now ive got two screen protectors that dont fit! Ive a feeling its for the Redmi 4 and not the Note 4 which would make sense as the label looks like its 'Redmi 4' but it should be 'Redmi Note 4'.

Thinking of ordering this one as its 'edge to edge' and so should at least fit across the whole screen. Or failing that just a film plastic one would do. The whole 2.5 glass thing is cool but a disaster with screen protection, I had the exactly same issue with the galaxy s7. I actually thought the regular S7 would be less problematic that the S7 edge but i was wrong.

Yeah right lol, that's way way off, definitely a 5" at least mine covers the screen, sorry I don't mean to laugh at your misfortune but you should get a refund through Seller or PayPal.

No its ok, ive got two and will just stick them together and they'll cover the screen lol
That one you linked looks decent, maybe the soft edge will help when using with cases, as I know with the S7, there were the same kind of issues. Like the standard screen protectors didnt cover the screen properly but the full screen ones popped up when used with certain types of cases, so the soft edge might help.
Lol, no chuck em my way, I have an Xperia Z 10.1" screen I need covering & I can use my left overs from my OPPO also.

I don't think they can make it any bigger because of the 2.5d roll away of glass that slowly tapers off, that would make a gap underneath I think.

It's the annoying thing about 2.5D displays, although it does feel/look nice and smooth, it seems well fitting glass screen protectors are impossible to get/make. I would gladly go back to a flat edged screen. In fact 2.5D glass and bezeless screens are two trends/features that I would be happy enough to see the back of. Im still waiting on some film and glass protectors arriving, just cheap ones of eBay so not holding out much hope of them being good, but I would be happy with just a plastic film protector just to try to stop minor scratches.

Case and screen protector

I received a basic case and a glass screen protector the other day that I ordered off ebay. The case is ok, just a clear tpu/gel type, not great but will protect from scratches and hopefully any drops. I think they sent the wrong screen protector though as its far too small, in both height and width, maybe its for the Redmi 4's 5" screen. Any way i sent the seller a message and they're sending out another in the post.
Would actually like to get the below case at some point, although i was the black was actually blacker as it looks more like gray.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-4-3-Slim-Rugged-Hybrid-Armor-Stand-Shockproof-Case-Cover-/291891199468?var=&hash=item43f6123dec:m:mSwMQcpYNH6nPM2zzCQ6n5Q
So will update again once i receive it, i still have the matte protector on that comes as part of the packaging on the phone which is serving a purpose for now. Looking forward to actually removing it though to enjoy the screen properly!
I think the case looks good, just may want to check before buying as it says it's also for the Redmi Note 3...
I remember watching a YouTube video on the differences between case sizes & cutout placement between the 2 devices.

Yes just need to make sure to select the right model in the drop down option and hope they dont send the wrong one! I had a pretty similar case for my S7 and it was solid, it was a copy of a more expensive one but was a good job.
On mine both the case and the screen protector I got were wrong. The case will fit on the phone but none of the holes line up at all... even the finger print sensor is obscured. Its as if its a case for another phone (it is) And the screen protector too small again. And the camera hole is on the wrong side...

I use the same combination.Transperated thin silicon case+temperated glass.
I'm still not having much luck with screen protectors!!
So... before Xmas I ordered some glass ones and plastic film ones. A glass one arrived yesterday which my wife opened (she orders a lot of craft bits and pieces from eBay/China) and unfortunately cracked the protector. It was only 0.99p so not bothered and the packaging was partly to blame, while it was substantial enough, polystyrene blocks wrapped in tape (no box), it's hard to get into.
Also there was only one protector sent out, but the listing was for x2. So dropped an email to the seller and they were very helpful and offered a refund or to send another, so I've asked them to place another in the post.
In the meantime I was able to apply the broken one, as it's still mostly in one piece, with most of the damage at the top. But it's just good to finally replace the factory fitted film cover as it was staring to not stick at all as it had collected that much dust.
So the protector itself seems to be similar to most ones people have got, it just about fits the width down the sides with smallish gaps at the bottom obviously due to the 2.5d screen curves. It's not perfectly straight as I wasn't even sure it would go on at all due to being damaged but it will prevent any scratches and it's great to fully enjoy the RN4's HD display which is pretty awesome in my opinion.
Sent from my Redmi Note 4 using Tapatalk
I won't laugh.... you've had a bad trot with them, but must have been nice to peel away the factory protection though.
Maybe when you're wife's next package arrives from China, you take it out to the shed & whack it with a rubber mallet a few times to tenderise it

It is great to see the screen properly, albeit with some cracks at the top. Can't emphasise how good the display on this thing is. In my opinion it's just not worth going over 1080p for a mobile screen. I got a VR headset for Xmas and have been testing it out. It works great although I suppose that's the one area where the S7's display would have had an advantage with the higher resolution. It also makes me wonder how crazy the battery life would have been if they would have stuck a 1080p panel in it as it was pretty decent as it was.
But hey, there's another glass screen protector on its way and I've instructed the Mrs to leave it to me to open!

Samsung seems to have wisely decided to forgo the ugly rounded 'fish bowl' screen edges of the S8.
Looks promising and I'm glad I stuck to the S7E for the time being. Looks like the Note could be my next phone.

Once in a case you won't notice much and let's face it not many will use a £900 phone without one.
What bugs me more, if images are to be believed are the same fugly chrome like finishes on the side other than the black one which has ... black sides. Matte silver sides look so much smarter. I guess once again ... with a case it won't be obvious.

Yeah enough was enough
Yeah - not round edges - but infinity display edges - a cool idea, but limiting in width
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/help/bigger-screen-usable-t3660825
Deetz

The real width of the screen (visible and usable)

This question is to people who have access to the phone.
What is the real width of the screen (visible and usable) - measured with a ruler. I know it's hard because the screen is curved. I would like to know if the screen is at least the same as in Note 3 - 71mm
It's a slim design like S8+. The two phones are almost identical.
still not sure how this compares to the Note FE/7
I have the Note 7 and S8+ - I will measure both and get back to this thread once I do. The Note 8 will be slightly wider than my S8+. BTW, if Samsung does indeed offer $425 for my Note 7 if I turn it in to get the Note 8, I will be doing that.
I used the CAD models, and the REAL i.e. FLAT difference between the Note 4 and Note 8 is here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/help/bigger-screen-usable-t3660825
6.5 mm which is over 1/4" - that doesn't seen like alot but it really is!
The SPEC of the screen size is with the infinity display is MINUS 6.53 on BOTH SIDES in reduction
I just measured the Note 7 and S8+. The S8+ is a mm wider than the Note 7 and about 5/8 taller than the Note 7. So what you get on the S8+ is a tad wider and significantly taller USABLE area of the display. The phones themselves are almost exactly the same width although the Note 7 is slightly wider, so Samsung decreased the size bezel slightly on the S8+ while actually getting an extra mm of display on the S8+ too boot. Small but definite improvements. The S8+ body is about a 1/4" taller than the Note 7, but far smaller top and bottom bezels so you get 5/8" more actual display. The Note 8 is about an 1/8" taller than the S8+ I believe and also just a tad wider. So as far as more display, the Note 8 has more than the Note 7 since the S8+ has more display than the note 7 already.
EDIT - I will add that the Note 7 still has slightly less curve on the edges of the display than the S8+ - and if the accounts are accurate the Note 8 will have even less curve than the Note 7, so expect the curves to be improved/lessened on the Note 8 over the Note 7 also. I think this is worth mentioning. I am not a fan of the edge displays - they are very fragile and I turn off the edge features as I don't need or use them. Would rather have a flat display that can use real tempered glass screen protectors that actually work. Hopefully the Note 8 can utilize tempered screen protectors better with the smaller curves. We will see.

Is that usable screen though? I had the S8+ and hated the ratio (too tall) and narrow width. Why does the note 7/FE feel bigger in use? Certainly don't make as many errors typing on my FE than the S8+! I couldn't wait to get rid of the s8+ for the FE. Maybe it just feels a better dimension.

Yes, that's usable screen. When measuring I took off the steep sides of the curved edges of the Note 7 and S8+ to compare - in other words, I measured from where the curved edge stopped and the screen became flat. The S8+ has more curve on the edges, slightly, than the Note 7 so that means the Note 7 has slightly (we are talking about less than a MM) less "curved edge" distortion. From the pictures I have seen, the Note 8 will have even slightly less edge curves than the Note 7, and for sure less than the S8+. This means that the edges do not project in towards the middle of the screen quite as far (barely any on the Note 7), therefore there is more flat, usable display.
Bottom line, the Note 8 will have more display than the Note 7. It is significantly taller and a tad wider of actual usable display. Also, I turn off all the edge features AND use a phone case that comes up over the curved edges on the sides, so the edges are not an issue for me on either the Note 7, S7E or S8+. I would still prefer a flat screen and not edge screen simply for the fact that one can get a tempered glass screen protector that actually works and adheres to a flat screen. The edge screens are all but impossible to get a tempered protector that is even worth using, and the edges make the display MUCH more likely to break if the phone is dropped and hit on the edge somewhere.
As I mentioned, I would still prefer a 16:9 ratio but with the small bezels that the S8 and Note 8 have. Also would prefer no edge curves. But that is not the way the industry is going - 18:9 will soon be the standard, if it isn't already. I wish at least Samsung was going with 18:9 and not 18.5:9, but you can't get everything you want, lol.
Can not anyone still measure the ruler?

Zagg curved screen protector has a line going down the screeen

So I just got the Zagg screen protector yesterday from best buy. looks really good and fits really well with the defender Otterbox case. one thing i noticed later on when watching videos is where the screen curves near the edge there is a line that runs down the side right in the middle if the curve on both sides. Not a super big problem but once i noticed it, kinda is annoying. when doing everyday things you wont see it but when in landscape and the screen is a bright color it will stand out. Anyone else have this screen protector and can verify if theirs has the same problem? ill try and get a picture when i can get hold of another phone.
Can you at least post a picture? This is too long to read.

I contacted zagg and they said it's adhesive on the curved part on the screen and that's what's making that line. As I said in my post when I can I will post a picture.
I think all curved protectors have that line on the very edges. Its the adhesive ( since no glass protectors are full adhesive coverage ). My Zizo Bolt screen protector does the same. Still looks/ feels great even with the faint line and I wouldn't dare run without a protector lol
And it's hard to post a pic because the line is so faint.

Ya not a big deal. Just thought the line was odd. So far loving everything about this phone.
And that's why they usually paint the edges black.
On another note it maybe more prevalent on the zaggs because they use a stronger adhesive and it's slightly thicker
Well what is nice is that there is no Halo effect on the screen protector like there was on the note 5. That was terrible and collected so much crap in it.
Yup no halo. I'm not using the zagg but I'm sure the zizo tgsp is of equal quality. Thank god they didn't do black edges!

How do you like your Zizo Bolt case, the screen protector and the holster so far?
I am considering ordering it, but not sure about the glass. Is the adhesive on all 4 sides or just the top and bottom?
Thx

The adhesive is on all 4 sides. The way they designed it to cut around the earpiece and cameras, it's completely sealed against dirt which is awesome. I've used the bolt case on a few phones and love them. They hold up well against drops.

I got the zagg glass for my note 8 I guess it will work but wish there was a better option, screen just doesn't look as good as other glass screen protectors. I think I would even be happier with one that just ended before the curve and be really thin ... I wish i looked at the forums a bit more for the price the whitestone is looking like a better option the more i look at the phone , such a great looking screen before the zagg got put on, the full glued on ones look so much better with not fuzzy lines on each side. I wonder if i got the LOCA glue and used with the zagg would make it look better then it does now. ugh hate wasting money .... dam you Samsung and your curved edges lol
I'm really liking the Zagg Glass Curve. Extremely easy install; Case friendly; No screen sensitivity issues at all. Looks great!
The Zagg Curve has been improved immensely over what they provided for the S*+. Thicker, nor more loose edges with dust getting under the screen. I have just one complaint.
The dot matrix drives me nuts outdoors, when the phone is off and if the screen isn't up bright enough to make it disappear.
yeah ive used it for two days outside so far and the dot matrix is driving me nuts , also the little gap makes a huge glare and takes away from clarity when out side

Whitestone dome glass is better, it's a pain in the rear to install but it offers full adhesive layer instead of just the top and sides without the dot matrix of the zagg.

i bought the zagg protector today. have a similar line, not sure if it's affecting touch capabilities though
