No bootloader, no root

I don't get your meaning

There's no way to flash anything. Bootloader is locked and you can't boot into fastboot mode. There's no way to root this phone.

I don't own this phone but would consider it. Has anyone tried this? Is it legit?

Can you elaborate it more? What error came up, what command you gave. A screenshot would further help

If it is a carrier branded phone, maybe your carrier may allow SIM-unlocking it.

Can I install an update without having the bootloader unlocked?

So I am the prime v6. 5 rom. I have twrp, I'm rooted and I have xposed. Would installing the 6.6 update brick the phone? I just don't have the bootloader unlocked. Any help is appreciated!
I thought you had to have an unlocked bootloader in order to install TWRP and root. Are you sure your bootloader is locked?

I got twrp and root without unlocking the bootloader.
I ended up doing that later by running rootjunky's script. It will wipe your data. So you would know if your bootloader was unlocked. If you look on his thread, he has a way for you to check.
Of course this all assumes you aren't on 6.6.

Question Relock bootloader

May I know if I relock the bootloader on my Zenfone 8, will it:
1) wipe out the data?
2) be able to pass safetynet again?
Thanks

1. yes
2. yes! Re-locking should get all functionality back, except OTA updates from the settings app.

Oh, too bad that it wipes out data
But thanks for the confirmation as I've been reading contradicting comments before. I need to think about how to restore my app data as I won't have root anymore after relocking.

Could you share the procedure to relock bootloader on Zenfone 8? I searched a while but couldn't find one that works on my phone.
Edit: never mind. Finallly figured it out.

I followed this post and used the command "fastboot oem asus-csc_lk" in bootloader mode. I mixed up with fastboot mode at first.
I am on the latest firmware on A12

Not familiar with StatiX. Do I need to have root with StatiX to pass SatefyNet? If yes, it's no good to me. Safetynet is very easy to pass. But I need my device for work, and my company has those root-detecting apps in my work profile which are playing cat and mouse games with Magisk. Really tired of this, so I have to go back to Stock root-free rom.
