Am I the only one who Actually LIKES the Hole Punch concept? xD - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Am I the only one who Actually LIKES the Hole Punch concept? xD
And when I say like I don't mean "tolerate" or "find it ok". What I mean is "I'd rather have a Phone with a hole punch camera than a bezel-less full screen display!"
One of the reasons I like the Hole Punch concept is because it's look like some kind of "Logo". Giving the phone personality, like TV logos, the CNN or FOX logo always in a corner, reminding you where you are.
IMO full screen display phones lack personality. Even phones with top and chin bezels have more character, (except the notch. The notch looks awful), than a full screen display.
So I was wondering, what you guys think about that? Think about it? Would you rather have a phone which is only a screen like a mirror, or something on the display to remind you what the phone actually is?
PS: I don't have an S10, waiting for the Note 10.

I think the punch hole is different makes the phone stand out! people will actually look at it and say oh he/she has the new galaxy that's one sexy phone ?... Apple sheep's ?? will be jealous because they are stuck with a horrible notch, I'm glad Samsung thought outside the box because the s9 was a flop I regret even purchasing it ?... Can't wait to hold the s10 in my hand ... hopefully mine ships this week ?

I prefer it to a fat bezel.
I'll have to get used to it but may take some time with cropped full screen video.

The Infinity O display was the selling point for me. If they would have went with the notch I would have purchased the Note 9 and waited for the S12 series.

I like the fact you can have it on or off based on the app. In normal modes it does not bother me but for games or vid I do not like it but I like I can hid it. For those apps.

Coming from a 3XL it's a welcome change. Can't wait till I have the 10+ in hand.

It looks ok and kind of stream lined.

I think it would be cool to put the camera on the corner. Corners are already rounded so it wouldn't be a huge difference.

I'm good with it.

I like the Hole Punch concept also and I also have the Oneplus 6t with the teardrop camera. I prefer the look of the S10 front camera position. Doesn't see as obtrusive as the OP 6t. Plus able to integrate it into my home screen.

See attached wallpaper.

I only use black wallpapers so I don't anticipate any problems.

I wish it was on the far left side so I wouldn't get finger prints over the camera. My fingers hardly ever go to the top left, but top right is how i bring the notification bar down, and most app Settings button is in the top right. I imagine there are design reasons why they didn't put it on the left though.

It's a lot better the hole punch than an iPhone notch!!!!

Does the off center screen bothers you?

I never seen anyone talk about it, the screen on the N6 its closer to the lower speaker (i found the moto x also), is off center vertically when holding on landscape. Do you think it would bother when viewing videos? Not trashing the phone, it looks gorgeous, just to see your thoughts.
Lower speaker area requires less presence for sensors/use. Making the screen lower intentionally. The top area where your front camera, proximity sensor, and ear piece requires more real-estate.
Personally I do not find it that much of a bother. As long as the build quality damn good and everything works as intended I will be happy with it.

Thanks for bringing this up. I thought I was the only person who was getting crazy on this particular design choice. I would have liked a little centered screen as well.
i been using it for a week and found no problem with it
I always like symmetrical look on things, but i think this is less obvious that the logo and grey bar on my lg g3 or the flat tire look of the moto 360, after some days you forget is there.

It would if the screen is off-centered "Verizontally"
The fact it has dual front speaker is good enough for me. I have a S4, which rear speaker is god awful

Not at all. it makes the virtual buttons become a part of the bezel. There are a few apps that do not support the full screen mode. Sometimes when playing games this happens. This makes it so if an app doesn't support it, the screen is still symmetrical.
Yes, off center screen looks awful !!
I hate unsymmetrical things
Nexus 5 is also unsymmetrical but in the inverse way .... the lower bezel is bigger than the upper one.
WHY DOES SOMEONE DESIGN SOMETHING LIKE THIS ??? :crying:
What bothers me is the orientation of the "M" and "Nexus" being different.

I'm returning it

I'm taking my S10 back. I find texting difficult, my palm keeps touching the side and causes me to hit the return or a different key. I feel like I need to hold the phone with my other hand and very carefully tap each letter with a precise touch. I also find when viewing YouTube videos the camera hole is just in my view, so I can't view videos in full screen. The screen is nice though, colors are great. I don't use the fingerprint reader.
Have you tried switching accidental touch on in settings?
When watching vids I rotate the phone so the hole punch is in the bottom right corner
Yes, tried that.
Get the S10e. It'll alleviate some of your issues.

Install from Galaxy store, samsungs, edgeTouch.
It helps unwanted touches from the curved screen.
Helps a lot!!
Edgetouch may help accidental button push but not a 1/4" hole starring at me when watching videos. If only they center dropped the camera ilike the OnePlus 6t instead of placing it in the corner.
The main reason I have a strong dislike for the edge versions.
Thank you all for your feedbacks. I might exchange it for the 10e or swap to the OnePlus.

Try the 10e. It's the first phone that does pretty much what I've wanted a phone to do for a long time.
Bixby routines and bx actions make this phone amazing.
Can't wait to get a 1tb card when they release.

I sent back the S10 because of that miserable finger print lock and bought 10e instead. No complaints so far and I don't think that 10e compromises a lot when compared to S10/+. I have the 8/256 ver. which costs $300 less then I've had paid for the 8/512GB S10. Still, I have some concerns about Samsung abilities to maintain a steady stream of updates to make their phones a top performers(as the price tag suggests) vs the competition. I'm waiting right now for the “super night vision” as they call it, and I just compared some picks taken w/ OP6 wondering if Samsung can make it better as they should.
I know it's a new line, some bugs are to be expected, etc, etc, but the time is running, each month new phones are being fed into the busy, commercial pipeline.
I'm happy with my 10e for now and I'm hoping that Samsung won't get overwhelmed too much with spinning more and more phones out like the new A's and so on, and invest as much care to just released S10.
No, I wont be switching to OP7, maybe later in the year if the 7T gets ufs 3.0, I'll wait and see how will Samsung handle all the S10 needed improvements. The 10e is a great phone(*), I'm having a lot of fun w/ it.
(*) - conditionally or, the time will show.
These edge to edge screen is not good trend and is not practical solution..little bit bezel on sides are good to make phone easy to hold and provide strong grip and less slippery ..also it save u accidentally touching the screen..its funny how all android manufacturers blindly followed iphone x

Folding the other way..

I just made a paper template of the device and discovered that it would make a whole lot more sense for it to fold landscape instead of portrait.
You still have the same size internal display, but the outer display is then as wide as the Note line, just a little shorter.
It would make the external screen far more usable instead of a tall candy bar, the keyboard would be as wide as Sammy's other flagship devices.
It makes me wonder why they decided to fold this way instead, ending up with a tall narrow device.
Try it! Draw around the unfolded device, cut the template and then fold it the other way. In fact it looks a hell of a lot like Samsung's famous foldy phone vision of the future from a decade ago.
I've kinda thought this since I got the phone. I don't know if a larger outer screen meant it would cost more?

You would still have roughly the same pixel volume, just in a different aspect ratio, and seeing as sammy produce the screens in the first place I couldn't see it being a problem.
It would certainly give me reason to upgrade to the ZF 3! Tall candy bar sucks.
lets see what Samsung people decides, we don't have choices for the design ideas

Question hide punch hole

hi guys, was wondering with this phone can you hide the hideous punch hole?
i don't mean just tinting black the status bar, but tinting it black + also shifting down the status bar, as you can do for example with some OP phones? tia!
I guess we do not have such feature (like OP9Pro near me has).
At first I thought the punch hole would annoy me but now I haven't really noticed it before you now mentioned it. The chrome ring around it does make it stand out more and I don't really understand it's existence but if you flip it in landscape mode with vol+pow upwards you don't notice it.
could it be hidden better? Yes.
Is it annoying? No.
unfortunately for me it is annoying. I knew already before trying a phone with it, and I got confirmation when I tried it lol. really can't stand it, and I don't know how people can. for example if you see something in full screen (movie, game etc) how can't you notice the hideous hole interrupting what you are watching.. I mean, we are speaking of a hole in the screen after all.. worst thing ever for me.. even worse than notch..
thanks guys for the replies! so I have to skip this one too

Zenfone 8 Flip is one of your only options with full view no obstruction display then or phones like Rog which have bezels on top and bottom for the speakers

Quality Control Issues

I don't know what everyone else's experience is with quality control but here's mine:
The first X5 Pro I had, I had to return for a replacement because I discovered in low light (dark room) there was a stuck pixel on the screen which was permanently lit green. This isn't acceptable on £1000+ device.
Now, my replacement device feels different in the hand. People will probably think I have OCD, but it looks like the ceramic back is actually somehow a fraction of a millimetre smaller than it should be, therefore the aliminium edges of the device do not blend seamlessly into the ceramic back cover and give that smooth, pebble-like feel. It now feels like I have a sharp edge resting against my palm or fingers when I hold the device.
Most people would probably not notice this but I do.
My wife has the X5 Pro in Black and doesn't have this issue.
I read somewhere about the ceramic milling process means that every since piece of ceramic is unique, but obviously within a certain tolerance, and the backs are matched up with the camera lenses during the production process.
I've attached a picture to try and convey what I am talking about. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the back of my first device, which felt perfect in the hand.
It looks like there is around 0.5mm gap between the back and the edge of the device.
Would you return your device due to this, especially when you know what it should be like?
Morning chap,
Re the green pixel, I haven't had any and agree is unacceptable.
Re the back. I have a slight edge too but assumed that's how they all were. Doesn't bother me as I have a case around it. You may want to return it if it really is annoying you and you are 100pc sure that the first handset was seamless...(are you sure? Mind tricks?)...but no guarantee a replacement will be any different.
Interested to see how you get on.

Haha, yeah, my first thought was mind tricks, but my wife has the black one and it defo doesn't dig into your hand in the same way. Looking at them side by side, the back on her black X5 pro blends seamlessly into the frame whereas mine has an obvious lip.
Yes you are right about a replacement being no guarantee of being better. This is the first phone in 10+ years that I am using without a case because it feels so natural to hold, but when it digs into your hand and you can feel the ridge, it definitely isn't pleasant to hold.
Anyway, phoned the carrier and after a lengthy call with me trying to explain the issue to one of their first line tech support, it's getting replaced by courier tomorrow.
If this was an iPhone there would be threads all over twitter with people going bananas so I don't see how I should need to settle for second best when this phone costs more than most iPhone models bar the 13 pro max!
This is a good review with hi-res images of the sides of the phone, and on which you can see no visible lip (although harder to see on the black model).

Ha now you got me thinking!
I can't hold this phone without a case, too slippery.
Agree, regardless when you spend a grand and ain't happy you should deal with it, no matter the issue. See if you can put up an image of the Mrs phone
Will do when she gets home
So, got the replacement and it definitely does not have the same issue.
This one is perfect, the back blends seamlessly into the sides.
Pleased you're happy mate. The pix don't make it easy to see the difference if I'm being honest. I'd kick off with Oppo if I were you. 1000 quid phone.
