Question hide punch hole - ASUS ZenFone 8

hi guys, was wondering with this phone can you hide the hideous punch hole?
i don't mean just tinting black the status bar, but tinting it black + also shifting down the status bar, as you can do for example with some OP phones? tia!

I guess we do not have such feature (like OP9Pro near me has).

At first I thought the punch hole would annoy me but now I haven't really noticed it before you now mentioned it. The chrome ring around it does make it stand out more and I don't really understand it's existence but if you flip it in landscape mode with vol+pow upwards you don't notice it.
could it be hidden better? Yes.
Is it annoying? No.

unfortunately for me it is annoying. I knew already before trying a phone with it, and I got confirmation when I tried it lol. really can't stand it, and I don't know how people can. for example if you see something in full screen (movie, game etc) how can't you notice the hideous hole interrupting what you are watching.. I mean, we are speaking of a hole in the screen after all.. worst thing ever for me.. even worse than notch..
thanks guys for the replies! so I have to skip this one too

Main keypad loose???

Anyone else notice the main keypad under the screen (the whole thing) sits loose under the brushed aluminum front face? Just curious if mine is bad or they all are that way. Thanks.

yeah..i think its been discuss already, your not the only one with that problem, mine seems like its getting worse.
Just to inform that mine is no problem. I got Kaiser since first week of September and the keyboard still fine.
In fact, I dont use it quite often nowadays because I am getting used to the Pocket CM Keyboard !

I can type very fast with pocketcm keyboard and I have my own keyboard layout with all keys that I want.

Acutally, they are talking about the dpad area... the whole group of buttons there (Send/End/Start/OK/etc) is loose. I'm in the same boat.
Prolly should take a poll, since some are tight and not moving, like mine, I'd perhaps consider asking for a replacement.

I think you guys are worrying a bit over nothing. It's just a plate that has a fraction of a millimetre around it that lets it move a little. It cannot get worse as it slides under the faceplate and therefore will never fall out. It does not have the switches attached. They are perfectly firm underneath. It's just a fancy plate/cover, it's not glued or screwed in place but merely held in by the lip that runs underneath the faceplate. Not an issue really -forget about it in my view.
Mike
I was just curious...I think it is designed that way. No big deal really

Nothing wrong with being curious. You are correct it is designed that way and in that sense it's not a fault. It might bother some people, but I just wanted to re-assure anyone that thought it was a fault and might get worse. They are all like that though some may be a little more free to move than others.
Cheers
Mike
PS apologies if I sounded blunt or dismissive, did not mean it that way. I know it bothers (or makes people curious!) not just here but on other fora.
most dpad assembly moves...like the 810 pro and 838 pro..
it's design like that...

[Q] Diagonal lines across the entire screen

My HTC One screen seems to have some kind of mesh of faint diagonal lines running across the entire screen. It's kinda hard to explain, but basically when I look at the screen up close, it looks like the background of the Steam Android icon (see attachment). The lines are especially noticeable against light, single-coloured backgrounds; for example if I go to phone settings, look at the screen up close and slowly slide up and down, the lines become apparent since they do not move along with the rest of the graphics. The lines appear to be above the actual screen but below the glass surface. It almost seems like there's some kind of crappy screen protector on the screen or that the screen was somewhat dirty with fingerprints. I should also mention that the lines do not rotate with the screen; in portrait mode, they run from the top right of the screen to the bottom left, and in landscape mode from the top left to the bottom right.
Anyone encounter something like this before? I would probably think this was normal, that I'm just seeing the pixel array when I look at the screen up close, except that I never noticed lines like these on my previous One (which I returned due to several stuck pixels) even though I scoured the screen very closely.
I want to return the phone and get a new one, but I'm worried that they won't believe or see the issue at the store...
Mr. Me Too
I am typing this on a day old HTC One with this very issue. I've been surprised not to see any other mention of it, evidently it's either a rare fault or simply inherent to this digitiser and somehow nobody is noticing or bothered by it.
I've been agonising over the choice between this phone and the S4, I eventually settled for this and haven't had such buyers remorse in memory.
The screen is not only washed, more than I was expecting upon my return to LCD, but as you say it looks as though it is wet, covered in condensation or fingerprints. The overall effect resembles almost exactly the distortion you get from condensation caused by breath or sweat on the glass.
When looking closely it reveals itself as the diagonal lines of the digitiser as you describe.
It seems to cause the 'wet' or noisy colour distortion by being half darker stripes, and half naked. Almost like a micro version of reinforced safety glass.
If this is the nature of the HTC One, I would find it both surprising and in fact laughable.
However it is too precise in nature to be a fault or defect.
At this stage I'm planning on a swap for an S4 (albeit not for this reason alone, but that's another thread).
I did have some difficulty explaining and demonstrating the effect to the salesperson, and felt silly even talking about something so minute.
However - fat ugly bezel, washed colours and grey blacks aside - this is a flaw that completely ruins the display and therefore the phone itself for me.
I imagine this thread is DOA, if not let me know how you got on. It's an incredible relief to at least find one person who also noticed this and found it to be a problem.

It happens. It's the digitizer and happens on phones where the LCD and Digitizer are one piece. It isn't as big of a deal as you're making it though.

Yes - it is.
These companies are charging iPhone prices for phones they claim compete with them. Only Samsung have so far proven themselves in this regard.
I'm not about to pay flagship prices for what feels like an 8 year old phone pasted onto the front of a slab of aluminum.
Almost every review has touted this display as gorgeous, 'the best they've ever seen on a smartphone!' - that's bull***t, it's trash.
Seemingly there's a reason HTC is on it's way out - putting a Nokia candy-bar phone on a piece of shiny metal isn't going to change that.

If you ever want to return a phone to tmobile, just tell them it's stuck in a reboot cycle and sometimes it's not. If you have an issue like the screen and they might not see the problem you see and therefore not take it back. It's better to tell them you have an issue that can't always be displayed. Like your phone just keeps rebooting, keeps turning off. I have done this many times just to return my phone.

It really is. Why else would most people, whose job it is to review phones, say this if it weren't true?
Maybe HTC paid off all the reviewers. Or maybe you've convinced yourself there is a problem when there isn't.

Yeah I have the time and inclination to bash a phone I just bought for myself.
XDA is almost entirely made up of boards segmented into fanboy groups who serve as nothing but a broom to sweep any perceived criticisms of their devices under the proverbial rug.
I have a low post count because I've just bought the phone and am disappointed enough to discuss it.
HOLD UP GUIS LET ME SIGN TWO-YEAR SO THAT I CAN GO STRAIGHT HOME TO XDA AND BASH IT UNNECESSARILY!
F***ing lol.
The screen is awful by 2013 flagship standards.
No I don't think reviewers are paid off directly because I'm clearly not as simple minded as the pubescent pizza faces on this board.
Reviewers are wined and dined one way or another by the industry as a whole and wouldn't dare be overall negative about a brand or phone lest they stop receiving review units or invitations to press events.
The way genuine concern and criticism is shouted down and borderline stigmatised on this board is juvenile and pathetic. The irony of you considering us trolls when seemingly you're the ones with far too much free time, imagination, and lack of time spent outside of the womb.
The lines on the screen are normal. It's on mines and a friend's.
I only see it when holding the screen at an angle after turning the display off. It's just a funny little thing that's there. When the screen is being used it looks amazing!
I woukdnt take it back over a little thing like that. It's not broken...

You're all thinking of the horizontal bars visible behind the glass when the screen is off etc.
This is different. It's fine diagonal lines at a 45 degree angle that are constantly visible and affect the look of the screen at all times.

Like I mentioned in the OP, this was my second HTC One since I returned my first One due to several stuck pixels on the screen. The first one did not have these diagonal lines, as a result of which the screen looked much better than on the second One. Before returning my second One, I also went to the store and compared my One to a demo unit side by side, and the demo unit did not have this issue.

I know that. I only posted the icon to give some idea of the issue since I wasn't sure I was explaining it adequately. I never meant that there was something wrong with the Steam icon,

This is a different issue. The lines I'm describing are only visible when the screen is on.
Shortly after creating this thread, I returned my second HTC One to the store I bought it from and they sent it to HTC for servicing. It came back two weeks later with a service report saying that they had replaced one of the speakers and the SIM tray, despite the fact that I never experienced nor reported any issues with either. When I turned the phone on, I immediately noticed that the screen was exactly the same, the diagonal lines were still present. I commented about this to the salesperson and he also noticed the lines right away. He then suggested that the phone be sent back to HTC again with a more detailed explanation of the issue and apologised that the issue had not been resolved. That was a week ago, and I'm still waiting to hear back.
I'm not mad at HTC, phones can be defective and it seems that this is a rare issue. I am, however, somewhat annoyed by the fact that they replaced a speaker and the sim tray but did nothing to the screen, but hopefully they'll have a closer look at the screen this time around.
OK, now I am getting a bit mad. My phone just got back from its second two-week trip to HTC's service centre in Poland and the screen issue still hasn't been fixed. Instead, the service report says that two speaker components were swapped. This is the second time I sent my phone to them for servicing because the SCREEN is defective and the second time they mess around with SPEAKERS even though I have at no point indicated that there are any problems with the speakers. The guy at the store proved useless, his only suggestion being that they send the phone back to HTC a third time. He did, however, see the problem with the screen after I explained it to him. So I guess I have no choice but to send the phone back again and wait another two weeks for HTC to mess around with the speakers instead of actually fixing the damn screen.
So yeah, the HTC One is a great phone if you happen to get your hands on a unit that works as intended. So far I've been unable to do that.

Yes.. i thought it might be the game too, but sometimes ill just be swiping through the homescreens, app drawer, and othe rthings. it just doesn't respond.
right now i am testing something. I had/have the S-view flip case on it.. so i took that off and put the stock backing back on it. ive been playing it for a bit and so far nothing.. but.. the phone is also cold as F right now so not sure if its just that the phone hasn't heated up to possibly trip it or if thew s-view case really could be the culprit...
does this sound possible? i am most likely stopping by BB today since still within my 45days and going to possibly try and swap it out, and i think i might stay away from the s-view case.. never really used that screen anyway and the bumper protection is non existent.. haven't dropped the phone and there is already a slight nick on the side just from being in pocket.
I use an Otterbox case myself so i am not sure how an s-view fits. I have found in the past with some case if they have a lip that extends over the edge of the display it can sometimes cause false touches if it is touching the digitizer area on the display. If it touches in more than one spot this could confuse the display in that it does not know if you are tapping, swiping, or pinching.

Definitely root first with RDLV. Once you take the OTA you run the risk of the bootloader being patched and can potentially screw yourself out of a chance of getting a real recovery in the future.

Ive noticed that some games just genuinely do NOT like the 1920x1080 resolution and the buttons have very small sections that actually work. A few games require me to use the s-pen to actually tap the buttons to go through menus. thought my digitizer was having issues until i found out almost everything else works perfectly in those same spots.

Does the off center screen bothers you?

I never seen anyone talk about it, the screen on the N6 its closer to the lower speaker (i found the moto x also), is off center vertically when holding on landscape. Do you think it would bother when viewing videos? Not trashing the phone, it looks gorgeous, just to see your thoughts.
Lower speaker area requires less presence for sensors/use. Making the screen lower intentionally. The top area where your front camera, proximity sensor, and ear piece requires more real-estate.
Personally I do not find it that much of a bother. As long as the build quality damn good and everything works as intended I will be happy with it.

Thanks for bringing this up. I thought I was the only person who was getting crazy on this particular design choice. I would have liked a little centered screen as well.
i been using it for a week and found no problem with it
I always like symmetrical look on things, but i think this is less obvious that the logo and grey bar on my lg g3 or the flat tire look of the moto 360, after some days you forget is there.

It would if the screen is off-centered "Verizontally"
The fact it has dual front speaker is good enough for me. I have a S4, which rear speaker is god awful
8675
Not at all. it makes the virtual buttons become a part of the bezel. There are a few apps that do not support the full screen mode. Sometimes when playing games this happens. This makes it so if an app doesn't support it, the screen is still symmetrical.
Yes, off center screen looks awful !!
I hate unsymmetrical things
Nexus 5 is also unsymmetrical but in the inverse way .... the lower bezel is bigger than the upper one.
WHY DOES SOMEONE DESIGN SOMETHING LIKE THIS ??? :crying:
What bothers me is the orientation of the "M" and "Nexus" being different.

Am I the only one who Actually LIKES the Hole Punch concept? xD

Am I the only one who Actually LIKES the Hole Punch concept? xD
And when I say like I don't mean "tolerate" or "find it ok". What I mean is "I'd rather have a Phone with a hole punch camera than a bezel-less full screen display!"
One of the reasons I like the Hole Punch concept is because it's look like some kind of "Logo". Giving the phone personality, like TV logos, the CNN or FOX logo always in a corner, reminding you where you are.
IMO full screen display phones lack personality. Even phones with top and chin bezels have more character, (except the notch. The notch looks awful), than a full screen display.
So I was wondering, what you guys think about that? Think about it? Would you rather have a phone which is only a screen like a mirror, or something on the display to remind you what the phone actually is?
PS: I don't have an S10, waiting for the Note 10.
I think the punch hole is different makes the phone stand out! people will actually look at it and say oh he/she has the new galaxy that's one sexy phone ?... Apple sheep's ?? will be jealous because they are stuck with a horrible notch, I'm glad Samsung thought outside the box because the s9 was a flop I regret even purchasing it ?... Can't wait to hold the s10 in my hand ... hopefully mine ships this week ?
I prefer it to a fat bezel.
I'll have to get used to it but may take some time with cropped full screen video.
The Infinity O display was the selling point for me. If they would have went with the notch I would have purchased the Note 9 and waited for the S12 series.
I like the fact you can have it on or off based on the app. In normal modes it does not bother me but for games or vid I do not like it but I like I can hid it. For those apps.
Coming from a 3XL it's a welcome change. Can't wait till I have the 10+ in hand.
It looks ok and kind of stream lined.
I think it would be cool to put the camera on the corner. Corners are already rounded so it wouldn't be a huge difference.
I'm good with it.
I like the Hole Punch concept also and I also have the Oneplus 6t with the teardrop camera. I prefer the look of the S10 front camera position. Doesn't see as obtrusive as the OP 6t. Plus able to integrate it into my home screen.

I wish it was on the far left side so I wouldn't get finger prints over the camera. My fingers hardly ever go to the top left, but top right is how i bring the notification bar down, and most app Settings button is in the top right. I imagine there are design reasons why they didn't put it on the left though.
