The main defect with the Note 3 is that it requires a button-press to wake-up.
Let this thread be a collective bounty of alternative solutions until we can Slide2Wake which requires kernal changes and AT&T to unlock the bootloader.

Why would you want a huge wake lock like that? A simple press of the home button is much easier IMHO. I'd rather not have to swipe across the screen to turn the screen on

You're right. It's a considerable battery drain. The surprising thing is.. in the end, the smoothness of button-free operation becomes *worth it* IMHO.
I turn my phone on and off a lot to check stuff. I'll look at my to do list then press the corner SwipePad shortcut to turn it off. Then I'll remember something while moving up a bit in the line and **without even looking down for a button** and half-entranced in contemplation still I'll swipe from one side of the phone to halfway to the other and it is ON by the split second both my hands hold it to to make a note or reminder, look up something, etc. after which i'll immediately press the corner shortcut again to turn it off and my phone stays in one hand while I people-watch.
For some reason this is much more relaxed and makes me feel like the phone is like a second brain where I don't even need to create mnemonic devices called loci as much like I used to.
Maybe that's what's making my memory kind of crappy. Maybe should go back to doing that for my to-do lists. Might improve my memory. ANYWAY. my point is:
(1) it's less mechanical effort to swipe and
(2) I like to save my buttons and don't want to eventually have to replace the home button on the Note 3 for like $50 or whatever.
I guess it's not that big a deal.
If I did have that feature though I wouldn't miss anything else from past phones especially since the Note 3 is big enough to fit in one hand BARELY and could do a HALF-swipe to wake feature.

I would like a solution to this as well. Tried the light sensor app but that wasnt working well. Really wish we had tap-on.
I really like not hitting any physical buttons because this phone is huge and unwieldy. Still love it though.

I assigned the power button to holding down the back button. That saves a little bit of button-life.
The app also is designed to support the same while the screen is off... but it doesn't seem to work yet.
Would be super awesome though to be able to turn the screen off and on while the back button is held. Just not there yet.
Screen on with swipe is the next best.. though much more battery intensive.
Has anyone just simply tried pressing the simple wake button on the side of the phone once? I mean you already have your hand on it most of the time since it is where your fingers are if you are holding the phone in one hand.
Also for you slider guys, it takes many more muscles to frown and it is the same to slide. Much better to smile and press one single button already under your thumb when you are holding the phone.

Read above about my experience with button-less waking in the SGS2.
Besides that, you're wrong, my thumb is actually closer to the screen than the power button when I am holding it.
And it's no effort at all. That's the whole point. It's the same slide necessary in receiving a call. No physical PUSHING required.
I can turn my phone on twice per second easily by linking one of the touch buttons to "power" as well. With zero concern for screwing up any physical buttons.
Anyway please only write in this thread if you have something that will contribute to the idea of "button-less wake"
I'm only looking for creating solutions to that.

I'm talking about my SGS2 (last phone).
If Note 3 has a button-less wake feature then can close this.
I think that won't happen till ATT lifts the lock tho..

Pardon if this is a noob question, but can you turn this feature off? I tend to use my phone one handed... I'm a heavy user of the notification panel, and what I'm finding is that I typically drag from the corner due to the ergonomics of my thumb and the size of the screen.
Whenever I do this inside of an app, bam, it's minimized into split screen mode. It's happening so often I want to punch things.
So can we turn this feature off? I couldn't find a setting so without an unlocked bootloader I suspect not?

I used to do all the usability testing for AT&T's new phone launches and always had trouble coming up with a realistic scenario that wouldn't be better served by just switching between open apps in full screen mode (heck we have a dedicated button for this!)... But I'm only one user, curious what others think.
Idk about turning it off, but I use it sometimes. Screen is a bit small to use split screen to it potential but it has it's uses, like sometimes I watch a video on YouTube while reading the reddit thread that goes with it. Also filling out or replicating forms and applications for jobs with information I don't know off hand. That's about all I've come up with this far.

There isn't a way to disable it without root. The pop-up display can't be disabled either, and I trigger it accidently all the time. Waste of space on a phone if you ask me.
“MultiWindow Toggle for Samsung” allows you to disable the feature. It's available from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nerd.multiwindowtoggle
Is it possible to completely disable Smart Screen? First and foremost, I don't want my screen to come on when I wave. Secondly, when I hit a bump in my car, the screen will come on. The phone could be sitting on a table and think I'm touching/waving at it, and the screen will come on. Ridiculous.
How do I disable it?

Disable it within the moto app. Why would you completely disable the moto display feature? Well, I do think they need to fix the sensitivity of it. You can just disable the approach one and you should be good to go. Once you get used the moto display, you couldn't go back to another phone that doesn't have that feature. It also helps with the longevity of your power button because you won't have to press power button each time you want to just check the time. Just slide up!

I couldn't stand it. My phone seemed to never go into standby. That said, it's disabled now.
Don't worry, it don't mess with standby or your battery juice, test it with BBS, you will see!
Any thoughts on how to keep the screen on forever like the LG V20 allowed me to? I realized that I never put my phone down, in my pocket, connected to a cradle, without turning the screen off first, so why should I use some low screen timeout number when I hate having it turn off on me when I don't need it to? Furthermore, I couldn't find a way to have my car dock setup keep the screen on without the use of an app on the LG, and I hate having a stupid notification on the bar to tell me "hey, we're doing something for you all the time, thanks for using this app!" if I don't have to. I'm trying to sell you on the idea, not sure why, but those are my reasons in case someone asks why I prefer it this way....
ANYWAYS, the maximum timeout is 10 mins on the Note8, and I couldn't find anything other than the setting in developer's options to keep screen on while charging (which, I'll have you know for those trying to suggest that one, dims the screen after a period of time - I don't know what that is, I just know I saw it do it once and turned that setting off because that's not what I need while using Google Maps and driving). Any thoughts on this, natively, within the phone's own settings somehow???

Just FYI, you can get rid of those "always running" notifications indefinitely by swiping the notification to the right and tapping "block notifications". It simply removes the card, and has no affect on the apps functionality.
Use Caffeine.
- Open it, give it the proper permissions (it will ask)
- Enable it
- Enable " Start at boot" and "Auto enable at boot"
- Close the app, open the notification panel, swipe right on the caffeine card and tap "block all notifications".
- As long as you don't go and change the display timeout settings in the actual settings app, your phone will never auto turn off, and can only be turned on/off manually just like normal.
And if app drawer clutter is something you want to get rid of, just hide the app icon.

I'm familiar with this method, even familiar with Caffeine, which I like more than any of the other junk ones in the Play Store, but I was hoping for something built-in that wouldn't require another running app to do something simple - Samsung / Android should have all the simple stuff figured out by now.... this was DEFINITIVELY the only thing the V20 had over the Note7 and now the Note8, I hated almost everything else about the phone but wasn't going backwards to the S7 when I had to turn the the Note7.

Found the issue with using Caffeine as opposed to something native. Caffeine does a great job of keeping the screen in no matter what, any time it comes on. This also includes if the power state is changed, a missed call comes through, etc. It will turn on the screen, show you the lock screen, and just sit there.
The LG was capable of shutting the screen off after a short timeout when only on the lock screen, which would allow a notification or change in power from keeping the screen on indefinitely because it wasn't forcing ANY screen on input from doing it, only when unlocked, when it was appropriate to do so.
Any thoughts on how to fix this?
Be very careful. Unlike your LG v20 this phone has a AMOLED display. If you leave it on the same screen for a long time it will cause burn in on the display.
What ever happened to Screebl? I was going to recommend it to a friend, and couldn't find it any more... I guess it has just survived the port from phone to phone.

See signature - not my first AMOLED display phone.... When the screen is on for a long time, it's because I'm driving and using Maps and switching to Play Music, etc. I'm trying to avoid having the screen on all night long with it coming on when A) the phone gets fully charged, and B) when a notification or something wakes it because Caffeine is almost "too good" at what it does!
Hate that I had to use an app to do this, but I am really liking Screen Timeout that disables the timeout options Samsung gave us all together. Would love to know how to get this done, without the need for root, where I don't have to disable notifications for an app that constantly runs, though....
What it does, if anyone cares, is make none of the selections selected so the screen stays on ONLY when unlocked, exactly what I figured out I was looking for. I hope this helps someone else looking for a solution like this!

So i started to try and use air gesture and immediately was frustrated with it. The instructions seemed fairly easy but also aren't crazy clear.
First it might just be me but I had to hold my hand further away from the screen than I thought. You'll hold your hand out a few inches above the camera and it will come up with the little blue/green status bar. I didn't see anything really mention this bar and was confuse by it. All it really means though is that the camera is on and watching. Secondly, you'll raise your hand about another 3 inches away and make a "loose" claw. I saw this because I was doing a really like pinched/clutched claw hand and it would NOT recognize it. Sort of pretend like you're grabbing a crystal ball rather than a gumball (sorry if this is a really odd example).
After this you should see the helper come up and show your hand. My biggest problems were distance and hand form.
Also, for hand id, you have to turn on "cover to wake for hand id" to get the screen to wake up with it. This isn't on by default. You essentially do the same things as air gesture, just holding your hand a few inches off the screen.
In the end I can't see hand ID as extremely useful myself, but the air gesture could be great in the right situation.

I find being able to just place my hand over the phone to wake and unlock rather my favorite use of this. Knocking the screen twice is ok for wakeup but it describes as being able to turn it off..doesn't ever seem to work. Opening up the music app and controlling it without touching the phone whilst driving (and the phone is in my hands free cradle) has been pretty useful once I memorized the distance and gesture so I don't have to look at the phone at all. If LG expands this functionality ever it could be quite useful..allow you to let the camera film custom gestures and connect that gesture to whatever function you like, and such.

Thanks for posting the video, I finally did it! I'm fairly impressed, but find it to still be pretty uncooperative. Of course, I could spend a lot of time perfecting my technique, but I think it really needs more development. It's just waaaaay too fickle, especially if you have to pull your hand away for a split second.
