gcam or stock - Xiaomi Mi A2 / 6X Questions & Answers

Just something i was wondering. What do you guys prefer using the stock mi camera app or gcam? I use the mi one mostly since one thing ive noticed is that back in my redmi note 4 gcam made a heck load of difference but with the a2, not so much tbh

GCam, in low-light/night scenarios, significantly outperforms stock. In good lightening conditions you might be able to see a little lack of proper WB tuning on GCam, colors are a bit exaggerated (unreal), stock camera handles color accuracy better (though, it won't capture as many details as GCam even in the best lightening conditions). Cropped sky shots on GCam reveal dot patterns, GCam devs now implement a fix by B-S-G, but you can't fully get rid of dots. By the way, the so-called Xtreme libs, that are available in previous Tolyan's builds, were the top solution to the dots' problem for me a month ago. If you'll be pissed off by the black dots, go try his builds. I just nevermind them 'cause we have a good dev who tunes everything to match Mi A2 capabilities.
Here is a link to builds by a Russian guy who works on bringing the best GCam performance to Mi A2.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. Never experienced these black dots myself tho. Its mostly just about stability for me and all the gcams ive tried aren't nearly as stable as stock camera. They end up crashing when i most need them. Anyways i havent tried the build you linked which is supposed to be specific to those device so ill try that to see if theres any difference.

That's the issue for me as well.
At the end of the day, photography is mainly about catching the moment.. so you can have the best HDR in this world, but if the camera crashes/freezes when you really need it, then it completely misses the point.
Even if I think that the gcam gives better results (if you don't consider the dots), I'm using the stock app simply because it's way more reliable (and not bad anyway).

camera quality

I recently bought my sister a Moto x4 for her birthday via a recent online sale on flipkart. The phone looks great and performs very well but but my only complaint is the camera. After spending around 20k i expected it to be at least a mid range level kind of quality. There's a lot of noise even in daylight photos, the edges are not sharp, sometimes photos look like water color painting. I'm very disappointed. Even my redmi 3s prime (with gcam mod) can take better photos compared to that.
I tried everything thing like updating the software and trying different gcam mods but none of them worked.
Please help...
Install some GCam mod, the stock camera isn't good, but they are improving.

Try Arnova's v7 beta 9 or v6
Both are almost similar and work very well

Google Camera port for Mi Mix

There are lot of versions of pixel camera port out there. Which one is best for Mi Mix?
I am using several of the most recent, and one older.
All 3 work well except for one or two things things, different for each, like slow motion or Lens, which is why I have 3 for now.
Be warned:

If they have different names as apps, I am not up to date on exactly what must differ.
I have all 3 of these I listed installed at the same time now, they each got their own icon, and don't seem to interfer with each other, the system treats them as different apps.

The oldest one I recall could work with 120fps slow motion, but it was not good with other things, have recently deleted it.
The newer ones do not work for slow motion.
For slow motion you could try Open Camera, I recall it working ok.
There's a new one where UHD 4K video seems to work at 60 fps.
GCam_6.1.021_Advanced_V1.4.032219.1950.apk
It has been a little kinky to get HDR photos to work, however, and slow motion still does not work.
Open Camera has been best for videos otherwise, Gcam best for photos, especially low light.

Right now I have:
Gcam_6.1.021_Advanced_V1.7.190716.1800.apk
And another one in which Google Lens works, Ithink this one:
MGC_6.1.021_BSG_Arnova-based_v.1.4a_TlnNeun.apk
Neither work perfectly in all aspects, and they do crash now and then.
I also use Open Camera, it sometimes works better than the Gcams, and never crashes.
But now I have a new Asus Z6 as my primary phone, so don't take pictures with the Mix1 so much now.
The Z6 perhaps does not take better pictures, but the camera apps do not crash snd the HDR processing is much faster, no waiting.

Oneplus 7 pro Nightscape vs Gcam app comparison *very disappointing*

Hello everyone,
I have been using my oneplus 7 pro for a few hours now, overall it's a great phone.
My only complaint so far is Nightscape mode, it takes awful photos, I downloaded Gcam *Google camera* and tested it out for a bit, what I could get out of this is that in comparison with Nightscape mode, Gcam takes it's time taking the picture, while Nightscape mode is done in a second, this is very strange, as a result I get white dots in my photos, as you can see in the images I uploaded.
When I went into settings on Gcam, I found out that it only uses 12mp, I don't understand why this is happening.
Can any of you make a similar comparison and share it in this thread?
Thank you
personally i like the OP photo, colors look way better, less noise. sure its not as bright but come on, it looks pitch black.
do some post processing and im sure youll get a better image than GCAM.
what do you expect from phones?
People keep saying they're disappointed in the camera, but it sounds like they're really just disappointed in the Oneplus camera app. Clearly the camera is capable of good things, based on the GCam user experiences, so what is there to be upset about?
This are my samples, the darkest one is the stock in auto mode, the slight brighter one is the nightscape mode, and the brightest is gcam night sight

I totally agree with you, but this has been a issue in the past, now we have "2.0" and Google camera is still better.
The white dots are very strange, I see them in every photo I take with the original camera app in Nightscape mode.
Other phones will never be able to take the same photos as a Pixel phone, there's an additional processor that was added to those phones called the Pixel Visual Core, due to this, comparing shots isn't very helpful as the two devices will not be on an equal playing field. They don't even have the same camera models.
That additional image processor will also be the reason that the Pixel's night time images are far superior.

The Pixel 3a and 3a XL don't have the Pixel Visual Core yet they are taking pictures the same as the Pixel 3 and 3 XL.
So would it be a fair playing field to compare to the Pixel 3a?

so if you had the S10 plus you'd have the same complaint right?
stop comparing everything to googles camera, its getting tiring - google has the visual core, and optimize the hell out of their post processing algo's not even huawei does what the pixels do
i have a pixel 3xl and the op7pro and 99% of the time you can barely tell the difference (on latest 9.5.5) and with the difference you can see you can easily compensate via post processing like snapseed to get the desired look.
and personally, i liked the OP nightscape, it looked more in-focus, colors looked true and the gcam blew out the lamp post.
just wait for a working port of gcam and use that instead. but im getting tired of people complaining and comparing to the pixel 3xl, day shots are identical, you cant expect every phone to perform the same in low light/night.
also look at the gcam vs op nightsight, you realize they both expose the same details in the scene, OP does a better job at keeping neutral lighting while pixel bumps the contrast and highlights up eventhough they both show the EXACT SAME SCENE.
the next person to compare the pixel camera to the OP is going to make me burn my pixel 3xl in a fire pit.
dont make me do it

2.0 what? Are you talking about night mode 2.0? If so that has nothing to do with nightscape, capturing photos or anything to do with the camera at all. Night mode 2.0 is an upgrade to the night mode for your screen to be turned Amber at night time. Has nothing to do with the camera at all.

Just got the phone today and I'm using this GCAM port, for the S10 https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=1395089523397913303 it seems to work fine, haven't done any test, just a quick pic and it does seem better quality over the stock Samsung.
I've been using it for about 4 hours and the camera does not fully turn every time, most times it does, but I've had that happen a few times already, where it almost flips all the way to selfie mode, but stops at about 80% of the flip. Interested to know if this is common, I've seen a Youtuber with this issue as well, so just wondering if it's "normal" or not.

The latest Gcam based on the Pixel 4's sensor works much better. I spent a lot of time trying and getting the best out of this sensor. Might compare it to the iP11Pro soon.

already tried bsg arnova version & it's much better than stock in normal or portrait conditions but there's still missing features like live mode who give us actual bokeh effect. as far my experience gcam still lack on response time to open up / switching between mode camera maybe many more must be fixed considering that there has not been ported special for this device

Would love to see too
i made a few pictures with both apps. just my summary:
1.xiaomi has better dynamic range, or in other words, brighter shadow.
2.xiaomi's color is more accurate. gcam has a cold color tone to it.
3.gcam is somewhat shaper without the weird sharpening effect.
4.gcam removes fringing a lot better, on edge of big color shift of two objects (tree vs sky, black bottle vs white background), it has a clear boundary, xiaomi is more murky-looking.
5.overall gcam exposure is a tad lower than xiaomi's.
6.gcam only has 1x and 2x, no wide angle. for potrait, it has 1x and 1.3x, picture seems to have very bad exposure.
7.all pictures were taken indoors, so i haven't compared the outdoor pictures.
i wouldn't switch.

Always find mi cam exposure half a stop overexposure....even more so at highlighted area that hdr fail to control sometime. And their awb is always wrong under warmer lighting condition. But there are more Gcam mod to try out. But I do notice...some Gcam mod had that weird green tint to white color background.

I agree after testing out a few mode...the color are more contrasty using Gcam. But only so marginally ....

1. Better HDR ? That's strange. However if it's just that the shadows are underexposed with gcam, that's somethign you can fix in the settings. Gcam is tuned for the imx363, obviously it's going to need some tweaks to work well on the gn2.
2. Make sure you have AWB on.
5. Again, exposure can be tweaked. Right now BSG has one of the most versatile, easily tweakable mods.
6. This you need to inform the devs about. Gcam is only acessing one sensor here, and digitally cropping 2x. But you can probably access both the 0.5 and 5x lenses as well. If the devs can make Sabre work on them this will lead to much better detail on both these lenses.
