S10e - strange halo when max brightness - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
first of all, it is my first time on xda, so sorry if I am posting this in the wrong section. Also, I have tried to find if somebody else posted the same issue, but with no luck. Secondly, sorry for my bad english, not my first language.
Back to business. I recently purchased a S10e, Exynos since I live in Europe. I noticed that when brightness is at maximum, I can see sort of a rectangle in the lower part of the screen. I use night mode along with all-black wallpaper, so it is particularly evident.
You can see it in imgur, the address is /TUvNYBq (can't share the whole link being a new member).
Is it a common problem to all the S10es? It doesn't bother me that much, unless it means that my screen is somehow defective - in that case is there any risk that the issue will get worse? should I return it?
Thank you in advance for your time!

I think you have screen burn in. No real way to fix that. To prevent it, just don't keep your phone screen on a lot and or don't keep brightness real high for long periods of time.

But is it possible to have burn-it after just 2 days of sporadic use?

Oh... well definitely not after 2 days. Did you get it used or new? If used, then the previous owner must have caused it. If new, then you might have a defect and you should return it for another.

[Q] Galaxy Note Screen Issues!!!

Dear friends...
Im new here so Ill try to be breif.
I bought a galaxy Note and I have an issue.
Im not familiar with terms so I dont know if my problem is called banding or anything else of the kind.
In a page that has a white backround (happens with some other backgrounds too but especially with white) I notice this:
The white changes shades... for ex.: it could take a pink-ish shade or a green-ish shade or a light blue one. All this ofcourse as a shade and not eye-popping differences. Just noticable.
Does anyone have knowledge on this issue?
What I'm really sick about finding out is if others are facing this problem also or if this is just my devise because Im an extremly lucky person and I dropped it right out of the box!!! So my worry is if I did some damage to the screen, or if this is just an issue with the hd led display.
Any help would be highly appreciated because as you understand, I will feel much less stupid if this is a common problem, rather than having caused it myself.
Thanking in advance
Gus
Uh... sounds like you need to return it. It shouldn't change shades when displaying white.
^^^Copy that, you need to get that replaced.

Does the white change shades while you are looking at the phone directly or when you are moving it sideways and viewing from varying angles?
Same problem here
I have the same issue with the screen you describe! I thought I am the only one...Could it be a wide-spread problem and other don't notice it? it is a very faint hue change from pink to green with a variable frequency but on low-brightness is annoying as it distracts me from reading... I do not know if it is a problem with the device or a feature of the superamoled display; I did not see this on my Galaxy s1 nor S2.
So, my concern: is this going to stay like this, to degenerate or to cure by itself.
I may return the phone but due to the stock shortage I will have to stay without it and I am quite hooked by this device...
Also due to the fact that this is barely visible it may not be accepted for servicing.
I know exactly what you are talking about, and i have seen it in my device. Do not fear, it is not a hardware fault, and is not caused by your drop:
Go to settings / display and scroll down. You will see 'auto adjust screen power' and when this is checked it seems to cause this, although i agree it is barely noticeable.
I keep mine checked because i prefer the potential power savings
I want to thank everyone for their replies!
Thank you Gahshn and dannstarr.
You cant imagine what a releif it is to know I didnt cause this problem myself.
Dannstarr thank you VERY much for your settings suggestion.
Im under the impression that it DID reduce the frequency of the problem quite much but it didnt completely stop.
Nevertheless, it is an improvement.
The fact that Im not alone on this, is a releif by itself but,
anyone else who is facing the problem and has more suggestions on this, please reply!!!
I guess there's no point on taking it to Samsung now.
They'll just do a factory reset and I'll loose what ever free apps and progress within apps and games I've made.
directly my friend
Different light intensity
I have a similar problem. I don't so much see shades with different colors, but different light intensities, horizontally across the screen if you hold it in portrait mode (typical way of holding in one hand).
You mostly notice it when all the display is grey, but also a bit on white.
You can see it by downling the free tool "Screen test" and going to the third page (first is white, second black and third grey).
I made a picture of it.
Do you have this issue?
I wonder if it makes sense trying to replace it.
@ Hironimo
Yes my friend, I downloaded the app that u said and these lines DO appear maybe not as intense as shown on the photo but visible.
As far as my issue, its very nerve braking because it doesnt appear at once so if you wanna show someone what ur talking about its very difficult.
Its more vissible with low brightness and with apps with white backround like gmail or browsing etc. You observe the screen for a minute or less, and it appears.
I think we hit the jackpot with this screen and I think we should all contact samsung in Korea because they are enjoing almost my one month salary and I am getting dizzy by reading within their so called hd super amoled screen! If I only knew......

I have a similar issue - horizontal banding in landscape view and hue change of white between pink and green (!) - barely visible in plain light but annoying whan screenfilter is on (screenfilter is a free app to reduce the brightness for use at night); I have not seen other phone (none of my friends have this model) but on previous phones I had I did not notice this type of problem.
I do not think it is a defect - is more like a variation in quality of the pentilematrix I would not expect from a manufacturer this screen.
Sending for replacement may look bizarre because it is a minor problem and you may be told that no screen is perfect and have issues like this to some extent.
Yes, this is also my take on it.
It is no major defect, and indeed if I send it in for repair they may say there is nothing wrong. And if I send it back to amazon saying it is faulty they will replace it (once) and I may get a screen with the same issue.
I do have to say that on the photo it appears clearer as when you normally look at it, and in normal use you seldomly notice it.
But when I compare it with my "old" galaxy s2 I know what evenly lit means ...
My friend also tells me i thinks the defect is not big enough to do something about it.
In so many other respects I love the note.
Especialy that FINALLY they have volume controls on the headset.
But I'm very intersted to see how many others have this or similar issues...
Maybe if we are enough we can contact Samsung and get a statement.
What about creating a poll?
edit: sorry, other topic.

Uh, on the topic of screen issues.... here is mine: the super-duper-black is not that black.
See the pic, that is supposed to be full black. Granted, this was taken in total darkness and with a long shutter, but it can still be seen. Hell, I noticed it yesterday when I wanted to take notes on a black background, under standard room lighting conditions.
(This is a review device, so I'll return it anyway.)

Is it visible under normal viewing conditions? i.e. not when taking long exposures in total darkness. Serious question btw. I'm just unsure from your post if this is something you can see generally.

Wow, I also have this problem and really thought it was just me because nobody had mentioned it so far. It's a problem that doesn't feel big enough to send the phone back, but is a big enough problem to annoy the hell out of me.
I have so far chosen to ignore the issue, but agree with the other comments regarding the fact that tinkering with the settings does make it less apparent. And again, I agree that I love the phone so much, I don't want to send it back for repair (if that's what it needs), but the underlying problem is... does it need a repair? or is it a feature?

So far only under moderate light and a black background. Which is what I'd use for e-book reading or writing into the note app during a session.
edit: tried it with fbreader, on night mode. You won't notice it during the evening, even with minimum brightness, unless there are a couple of empty lines. Then it looks as if the screen would be dirty.

Judging from the fact that there are many of us, it seems that it is not a matter of repair.
But... Im surprised that not all users have noticed and I sure would like the opinion of a samsung technician or a professional. Just to make sure.
But I also have difficulty turning it in...
Thats why we are here
To be convinced that it is a general issue and not individual.

I have the same issue, and I haven't dropped mine. But it's subtle enough that I wouldn't be surprised if many ppl don't even notice it. It hasn't been bad enough to bother me... Just kinda makes me wonder if I'm setting things sometimes

Would you return this phone? (Video)

Please watch the following video of my screen and tell me I'm not crazy for wanting to return this based on it's screen which seems to be flickering between cold and warm hues. If you watch the grey areas carefully you can see it switching between having a blue tint, to having more of a red tint.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fmraqenxno&feature=youtu.be
I'm worried that because the issue is so slight they won't accept the return, what do you guys think? Is it obvious to you? A fault is a fault right?
I found someone that also has the same problem!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-mVWkBK41I
First of all, no offense, but that video is mostly blurry.
Secondly, I think it looks fine. By all means, return 10 of them until you get the perfect unit, but it looks fine as per your grainy video. Yes I watched in 1080p.
It seems people are so over obsessive about every little bitty thing about phones these days. It looks fine to me.
Maybe u set your setting to Auto adjust screen power.
Try disable it Setting>Display>Auto adjust screen power.
See if the problem solved.
It's already disabled - thanks for the suggestion though. Why should someone put up with a screen that's changing colour temperature constantly? Secondly I'd rather not take the risk of this developing into a larger problem in six months and end up with £500 mess of a phone. Also it doesn't matter that the video is blurry is it pertains to colour not clarity. If the first video isn't clear enough take a look at the second, the problem is very obvious in that one.

Not to be rude, but just because you see some blue->red change (very slight, I couldn't even see it) on your screen, that makes the phone A MESS? Wow... Not to mention you have a 24 month warranty on it and if you have a problem with in in the next 23 months you can take it back to either get it fixed or have it replaced.
If the phone doesn't satisfy you, PLEASE return it. There is no need to post here and ask for advice if you think the phone will be a mess in a few months because of a slight color change (in your eyes, once again, I didn't see it). You should do what you think best. I really don't think you should take people's opinions into account if you believe your phone will not satisfy you. It's a personal choice.
I for one LOVE this phone! It's the greatest phone I've had since my SGSII lol.

Not to be rude, but read more carefully. I never said the colours currently make the phone a mess. I said that what is initially a small problem could turn into a larger one in time - why would anyone in their right mind take such a risk by not returning? The secondary reason I posted is because I thought others might have similar problems - and indeed they do, and now we have a thread relating to this SPECIFIC screen problem. It's documented, it's not useful to you, but it might be to one of the other people that will inevitably experience the same problem.
Upgrade to the kl7 update if it is available over the air. It will fix the hue problem in changing colour when scrolling. This way you still have warranty. If it doesn't work return the unit.

Mad? Not at all! I find it funny, that's all. If I am not satisfied with my phone, I'd return it. I wouldn't look to others to help me with it. Not to mention, we can't know how it will be in 6 months because no one has had this phone that long to know if it will turn into something more serious.

From the screen issues thread there are a multitude of different issues, ranging from black blocks in videos, banding, changing in hues of colors (which a lot of people are claiming has disappeared in the newest KL7 rom just released), etc. It's a very generic thread only specific to the screen itself.
Regardless, I understand your point. I'm sure a lot of people will find it helpful. All I was implying is that if YOU are not happy with the phone then YOU should return it. I personally didn't see much of a change in your videos, but if it's something that bugs you, then you should return it! No one can tell you how it will evolve because no one has had this phone for more than 2 months. So in 18 it could be the worst experience ever, or it could be exactly the same, or it could get fixed with software enhancements. I don't know. Sorry if it sounded as if I were mad, or offensive, it wasn't my intention. All I wanted to express was that if you weren't happy with it, then you should do what makes YOU comfortable, and not what others say here.

Replacement = Even more problems.

Had a n6 with half purple screen and had it exchanged.
This new one is horrible ..
It seems to get really warm compared to the other and when it does, boy does it lag. Just typing this out, it's lagging.
I also noticed that my Bluetooth has "silence" spots while listening to music. Every 2-3 minutes, it will stop for a split second like it can't buffer, even if the music is on the device.
Another thing that may just be me, it seems the keyboard doesn't predict as well, like it's not even touching the keys I'm swiping.
Lastly, half the screen is white and half is a really yellow color. Very irritated by this device. Makes me want to throw it against a wall.
Your first problem can be resolved by using a custom kernel that does not use mpdecision. Mpdecision is known to be power inefficient and sends your CPU to be sitting in wasteful frequencies causing your phone to generate additional heat. My phone became really warm with mpdecision on.
Secondly, I don't use bluetooth so I can't comment.
Third. That isn't a N6 problem, its a problem with the software of the keyboard application that you're using. SwiftKey works great for me.
Fourth, can't really comment on that. My screen looks good, your phone should be uniformly the same color, you can try changing RGB and see if it would do anything. I recommend turning off adaptive brightness.
Good suggestions I suppose.
Only problem with those, I'm not gonna root or use a custom kernel. The last n6 only had a faulty screen and no other problems. That one didn't need any custom root activities.

If you don't root, or use ROM's then why post about it on a developer forum? I'm not trying to be rude just wondering why here. If it has more issue call moto and have them send a new one. My RMA phone is fine 0 issues so far and I'm happy with it.
This is a user forum as well as a developer forum.
I'm posting here to show there is problems with these phones.
Why does it matter to you?
If you are having those problems on stock, and don't want to root/etc, then your only option is to return it again. Pretty simple.
If you are looking for confirmation that your experience isn't 'normal' on the stock phone, I can confirm it is not.

I'm not trying to argue at all I was just curious. I would have the phone replaced if you want to gave those issues fixed without modifying the phone. Best of luck with the issues because it's not fun when you can't fix them.

I scratch my head also. XDA is a developer's forum. There are tons of other sites more suitable to those not wanting to root/ROM it up.
Sounds good. Let's discuss dbrand skins and the such.
I doubt this has anything to do with memory leaks or anything that's been discussed on lollipop.
I'd say you have a faulty SOC and I would replace it. My wife had similar issues on an S5 where it would stutter and fall behind almost and get warm. The icing on the cake was while taking video, normal 1080p video, and it would drop frames like crazy. Maybe 22fps or so was al, it was getting.
I actually agree with 20degrees on this one... There are tons of non development/customization threads on here, and XDA has a pretty knowledgeable user base so it is a convenient one stop shop for info.
People just need to ignore/keep their comments to themselves in the Q&A and general sections if they have nothing constructive to add to the topic of the thread.

Headache caused by using OnePlus 3T- Help Needed

Hey guys,
So I bought the OnePlus 3T in December when it was launched. After a few days of using it I experienced some eyestrain and headache. I searched about what could be causing it but didn't find any strong cause. After searching alot I suspected that it may be happening because of the PWM screen flickering that happens in Super AMOLED screen phones. I really didn't want to return the phone as I really liked it and it was my first android phone and I really enjoyed using it. After weeks passed by I stopped feeling the eyestrain and headache.... I think I just got used to it.
Now, after 7 months of using the device, I have realized that once again that I am experiencing headaches after using the phone. This time I'm not feeling any eyestrain, I have a strong headache after using the phone. At times it gets quite bad and also affects my daily life activities (mainly studying because I'm a student).
I fear that this may be the long term effect of using the phone despite experiencing headache and eyestrain initially when I started using the phone.
I don't have much knowledge about this stuff so if someone could help me out about whats going on/why this is happening that would be great. and also a possible solution to the headaches I'm experiencing as I don't want to give away this phone . I was wondering if there is something like a custom ROM that eliminates PWM flicker? Any help will really help me and my sore head!
Thanks!
Well,
1. You shouldn't think that using the oneplus 3t is the reason for your headaches, and you should go to a Doctor.
2. I believe that your headaches are caused by fatigue in your vision, and if that is the case any phone or any product that has a display should affect you as well.
3. You should ask in a different forum to post this type of questions, for example yahoo questions.

You're right on the first two but I disagree with this last suggestion.
Don't ask for advice online at all, go and see your doctor ASAP. When it comes to health-related stuff, it's always better to be cautious.

I never experienced this with any of the previous phones Ive used, (iPhone 5c and 6s) so I know there's nothing wrong with my vision.
I think the flickering issue occurs only at around 10% and below brightness. Can't remember but I think it's that. Try brightening up the brightness a bit maybe, but still though I'd also recommend checking with your doctor as an extra precaution

That is not a lot of data points, so I wouldn't make that assumption. You can easily be looking at a red herring, placebo effect or just plain coincidence. Something can easily have changed with your vision or other health over time, without you noticing. And I don't know how old you are, but vision starts to nosedive at a certain age, with things like astigmatism drastically affecting your vision in ways you may not easily notice.
I agree with the above points, things like vision (or even your brain) are not to be taken lightly. You should have your eyes (and general health) examined on a yearly basis anyway, so it's well worth doing.
You also haven't mentioned how much time you've spent looking at your phone. The amount of blue light emitted from these devices can lead to a lot of eye fatigue. I know when I get a new phone, I tend to play with it a lot. So the cause may just be the amount of screen time, rather than the specific phone itself.

I was wondering if there is something like a custom ROM that eliminates PWM flicker? Any help will really help me and my sore head!
Thanks!

Yes it's pwm flickering headaches. I am too facing.
Use this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.js.oledsaver
It's really awesome to see I'm not the only one who thinks it's my phone causing my 3T that's causing my headaches. I thought I had developed power in my eyes (got them checked, 0.75 and 0.5) and got glasses. Yet, the headaches persisted. This is such a relief.

The function prevent accidently part of body skin touches the phone screen when the phone in pocket. To disable, go to Display > Block Accidental touches.

Something is covering the sensor on the top of the phone. Either clean it and make sure nothing is covering it when you wake your phone or disable the block accidental touches feature

Not to be a jerk but you could've answered your own question by simply using the search function in settings. Before you could fully type "Touch input" it will have narrowed it down to the setting you were looking for.
That setting search function is an awesome tool with all the options we have.

I have this issue. There is obviously nothing blocking the sensor, but this message pops up in a stuttering manner for a few seconds.

Maybe you misunderstood or completely misread my message of how i searched and couldn't find it myself. So after I've exhausted my efforts to "figure it out myself".

No I read that you did everything you could. The sad thing is typing on the literal text in the setting search would've taken you right to the answer.
I just wish you put as much effort in the "exhaustive search", as you put into griping about good advice..
I mean you could just take a gander at the screen shots and see how easy it is.
Nevermind next time you get a pop up that's too hard to decipher, you can make the daunting task of searching settings.
And that's how you fish.

Having this issue as well. I like the feature so I will deal with the weirdness. Whenever I plug in my charger my screen flickers with that message about 8-10 times within 2 seconds then goes away.

That's good information but in my case it happens with the new charger that came with the Note 9. My car charger and my old Note 8 charger

Shame on me i should be put on a cross and burned alive for that question. I'm sure you have a group of people behind you who support your heroism ready to string me up!! Damn now this question is going to cost me everything all because i didn't search. I'm going back to bed to cry. Byeeee...

Wow you are seriously butt hurt over this.
Literally you could've been like "wow, so many ways to do something on this phone thanks for one more tool in my tool box".
Nevermind checking the extensive manual that answers a lot of these questions. Let's not pretend this is hard info to find. It's the phone doing what it was designed to do, not some broken feature you need to troubleshoot.
I keep forgetting this is XDA, it's easier to ask for the answer right in front of you as opposed to learning how to answer the questions yourself.
I'll report back to my support group and tell them mission accomplished. Someone learned something new.
Knowing is half the battle!

If you pick up your phone with your hand over the proximity sensor (top of phone), you will get this pop-up. I turned the setting off and it went away but the screen did unintentionally come on while in a pocket. Therefore, it appears best to leave it on and ignore the message.
Can a mod delete pcriz's comments and androidwarriors responses after the question was answered. I think this topic was a valid question.
Samsung has switched up a lot for the better but the downside is they moved it all around. We are stuck in such a monotonous get to point A to point B environment these days the answer was right in front of his face but he couldn't see it because he was too used to the tools he always uses. I am still learning little things about this phone as I go too. I think his question was valid, seeing as Samsung experience is still quite new, Samsung experience is such a huge improvement over TouchWiz, the note9 is loaded to the gills with features and nuances and Samsung (and other OEMs including Google) having features that have trained us to a certain mindset for years. Coming back to the note line after a hiatus hasn't been overwhelming for me but I can see where coming to the note would be like a longtime Android user switching to iOS or even vice versa. For me, still using my work iPhone is so underwhelming I can't figure stuff out and I am pretty savvy with tech. iOS users can find Android overwhelming. And listening to the apologies Apple users come up with now, compared to yesteryear, when many people are finding out iOS isn't as easy to use as has been claimed, it's just what they grew up on, kind of like learning a language. There is a lot to grasp by being immersed in the ecosystem, but more to find out by asking details and learning, learning that can be turned into a tool to find more stuff on your own. Dude obviously tried and put out one more flag up for something he might not have had control over and the response was douchebaggery at it's finest. I find the questions dumb when people are asking me how do I get such great battery life and how they can do it but are unwilling to take their phone off full brightness, theme it to take advantage of OLED's self emitting pixels and are stacked to the gills with social media and email accounts because they have to be that connected and are not willing to streamline portability. Finding the sweetspot for my notifications on the note9 was aggravating for the first time in years as there are many layers to it now. I had to experiment and read about other questions to figure it out. Settings are still taking some time to get used to with main settings, app settings and figuring out where the granular settings are when they're not in places or labeled to what we are accustomed to. To each his own but pcriz obviously overstepped the bounds for a valid question.
