Hi-Fi DAC compatibility with custom roms? - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Questions & Answe

Has anyone tried to check if Hi-Fi works in any of the custom ROMs released?
It is one of the deciding factors for me to buy this phone. Even if it's possible later on to include in custom ROMs, that'll be awesome.

May I ask does hifi works in another music player like poweramp..??

I tried it out in a friend's k20 pro [untouched MIUI Rom].
There is a difference while enabling hi-fi mode in system settings and also in Poweramp settings. Enabling both will make a noticeable difference. Won't get loud as LG v30 but the output seems to me is clear and much better than average.

Does anyone know if it works yet?

I have this phone and audio of this phone if just okayish.. my redmi note 3 was wayyyy superior than this phone's audio..

Maybe check your settings? Cause audio output is far better than Redmi note 3's audio output, (but still behind LG v20).

Can u please send screenshot of audio setting you are using and which earphones u r using ?? I am using budget earphones like sony ex155ap, xb450ap, audio technica ath clr100 etc and with all of them budget earphones i find that audio of redmi note 3 is wayy superior. Both in speaker and 3.5mm jack.. audio of RN3 has crisp bass vocals and tribal and background instruments details.

First of all, hope you have some quality audio files with you because no amount of good hardware can compensate for that. Check Headphones and Audio effects section in settings if hi-fi audio is enabled.
I use Poweramp as my music player. I'll be attaching screenshots audio related settings of the app (also select hi-res audio for aux input).

Dear i use mp3 files as i have more than 2200 songs in my phone so i cant download that much of FLAC files as mp3 is commonly used files. Moreover i have tried lgv20, iphone 6, poco f1, redmi note 3, 4, 5pro, MI A1 etc and with budget earphones and mp3 files (even retro songs of 1960s 1970s years) RN3 plays them soooooo good even with stock music players.. if you haven't tried yet please try.. i enable mi sound enhancer with mi earbuds profile as mi earbuds profile gives background instruments details of songs mp3 and YouTube also
And on which ROM u r on k20 pro as indian global rom has bug of broken equaliser on Google play music (please confirm if you too have)
Also on mi sound enhancer with mi earbuds profile and EQ in such a way that bass bars at 20% height, vocals at 30% height and tribal bars at 40% height.. my RN3, 4 and all other Xiaomi phones as i stated above give sooo loud and crisp audio with those budget earphones (sony ex155ap, xb450ap etc) that u can hardly listen it on max volume but at those same setting and files even at max volume k20 pro sounds too low.. weak in bass vocals and tribal in all department...
Please practically try Redmi note 3 if you can..
Rn3 and k20 pro both have hifi audio but rn3 do not have expressly hifi audio option as there is in k20 pro does this mean unlike rn3, k20 pro compulsory require flac or heavy files and costly earphone so enjoy audio which anyhow be enjoyed with rn3 with mp3 and budget earphones...
I am not happy with audio of k20 pro..
I can go with costly earphone but replacing and finding flac files is not possible in india for 2200 songs.
Please guide

I've used RN3 in the past. Not much to write home about in the audio front . You'll need something better than the earphones you currently own. But if your satisfied with the output, no need to buy new ones.
What I suggest is that you tinker around with the EQ as that will give you sound you desire.

Yes dear .. i too have used rn4 and rn3 also but rn3 audio is on different level.. to each of my frnd i make comparisons to for both phone's audio.. everyone says that rn3 sounds better and loud.. i have sent many feedbacks and mails also to Mi.. Lets see how quick they fix it

It is great, I have some reasonably good KZ IEM and they just sound great with hi-fi mode, was surprised by the details and quality, at last listening to tracks in Tidal with hi-fi/master subscription was very noticeable, I plan to test some amps, there is some reviews talking about THD on high volumes, but in term simply of volume, honestly the phone output is strong, I cannot endure 3 seconds with 100% volume, but maybe it is just KZ, they are somewhat easy to manage.

The hifi DAC on the K20 Pro doesn't make a lot of difference.
I have a Pocophone and the both sound exactly the same.

Put on a good pair or headphones or IEMs (not $10-$20 bassy earphones) and use Tidal or Deezer and you will see the difference night and day. I have used Poco F1 as well and the audio output through the 3.5mm jack is way better on K20 pro due to the superior DAC used on it.

You realise MP3 audios are for casual listening, not for audiophiles. You will never be able to understand the difference when using mp3 files and cheap earphones. Even if you buy an external DAC, you would still find it similar to your RN3 which uses regular/normal DAC.

The quality is really good with good bass and it's also pretty loud.
I'm impressed.
Hi there, i have the Zuk Z1 since yesterday, I came from a Nexus 4 and I can tell the audio chip/DAC of the Z1 is really good for a phone ! Compared to my N⁴, there's a HUUUUGE difference in stereo image, dynamics and the amping is very good (nearly 2× more volume on the Z1). I wasn't waiting for so much
For information, I own a 450€ audio interface (SPL Crimson) for my music production and listening which has very good preamps and converters + an AKG Y55 headphones (and monitoring speakers for music production) so I guess you can trust me when I say that the Z1 has a really good audio chip/DAC for a phone ^^
Cheers

What kind of music do you produce?
Im a producer as well. Drum n bass, crossbred, hardcore and sometimes dubstep.
@MUG3NHC Nice to meet some others music producers ^^ I would like to hear what you're doing
Personnaly, I often blend Rock elements (Guitars & Bass) with Electronic music. As now I've tried Drum'n'Bass (which I do really like), standard EDM/Dance music, Dubstep, Glitch, Dark Ambient, Progressive Rock, Metal, Funk, etc... ^^ my latest production (work still in progress) is more EDM related (I wanted to try something different, with a more mainstream approach, still it combines dance with glitch and dubstep but also one very discrete rock guitar and bass ^^)
Link here : http://picosong.com/SD8N/
Dirac power sound included according to Dirac (but not mentioned by zuk in specification plus dedicated noise cancelling earphones via usb type c will appear as aftermarket item).
The Chinese launch was accompanied by a music box gift so there seems to be some focus on the audio quality. I can't find any specific details of the DAC though (in the same way that xiaomi and letv advertise HiFi audio and dedicated processor).

To be honest, your tune is a little bit too dancy for me.
Matter of taste tho.
I've got a lot of tunes on my pc, but a lot of them aren't mixed, so i only have 3 on my soundcloud atm:

@MUG3NHC i do really like your music called Night Rain, great ambience
I told you this last song I shared was more dancy/mainstream than what I usually do ^^ Here's an old production of mine which is a more ambient track (on my YouTube channel) : http://youtu.be/gUd10n92jL8

wow, not that cheap. but nice.
I'm not a great lover of mushroom type earphones, and like to be able to hear what's happening around me (especially walking through city centres). I do like in the ear though, and the older style ones are getting difficult to find, but I use these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121569462946 which are cheap, sound OK, and don't break too easily.

MI Hybrid is better
http://www.philips.fr/c-p/SHQ6300OR_00/casque-sport-bluetooth
12 grams, supra aural BT 3.0, waterproof. Via BT sound bad, like all,but Viper4droid,DDS for other philips with similar curve, and a upsampling via IRS to 32bit/48khz (44khz BT limited),sound pretty good in MP3 240/Spotify.
But if you conect via jack amd play loseless flac music, same config and add DD Atmos ,sound amazing. Maybe no so good ñike other HiFi top earphones ,but very very good, and 12g ,waterproof and 30 pounds, are nice, and you can connect other earphones to BT module,as well
Xiaomi Piston for sport and Sennheiser momentum Over Ear for pleasure
I think the starting question is wrong. It´s not the device that determinates the phones.
It is the wallet, first, then type of music you ear and personal preference in the way each one ears music.
Some bass heads like beats products, but what they listen is not the music as it was recorded: it's artificial enhancements, and that's fine. Some like more details in metallic instruments and others in voice and other that just want to listen to the music as they were at the studio at time of recording.
So it's up to you. You can check here.

Seem great. Too bad BT doesn´t handle uncompressed music well. I mostly ear FLAC without any EQ.
couldn’t believe that you will be able to hear a difference between both ways on a Honor 7 because this is the wrong hardware for it!
But it should be good enough for a older man to hear good music during jogging etc.
Did you see, that the headset use Bluetooth 4.0 with apt-X® ?
Anyway, my suggested combination was the best quality i ever heard on my phone!
But this is also a results of using this great NEUTRON music player app too!!!

Speaker & Audio-Quality

How is the speaker audio-quality compared to something like HTC One devices?
Is the DAC & AMP somewhere near the quality of the HTC 10, LG V20 or Axon 7?
Regards Forsaked
I can only compare to the iPhone 6S.
The speaker of the P10 is a bit louder, but on the loudest setting it sounds a bit distorted or overdriven. When I set 2 steps down it sounds like the iPhone 6S in direct comparison. The loudest setting is good for ringtones and they sound really well, if you don't have songs like metal or trance as ringtone.
With headphones (Beyerdynamics DT-770) and some FLAC files I couldn't hear any differences.
Pocketnow made an audio review for the P10.
https://youtu.be/jBzEmOhfcSU
The loudness of headphone output is 1/3 of iphone 7, 40% quieter than Galaxy S7. Not very loud. Both Phonearena and GSMarena confirm this.
I can confirm that the sound in P10 is very nice in Bowers and Wilkins P5 jack.
If you run flacs and Hi-Res Audio its very nice. Blutooth in AAC is also nice.
The Sound in P10 is designed by Hardan Kardon and the DAC is made of Yamaha Commercial Audio
It is well enough loud, if you use the Huawei music app you must run DTS.
Its pros is rock, blues, vokal, acoustic, jazz, funk etc... The sound is egaging, dynamic, detailed and lively better than iphone 4S, and other mobiles ive tried. The phones strongest audio card is something called SEPARATION, between instruments, that is simply outstanding. You hear details of what drum it is, clear vokal, and all the instruments is well placed in a room.
Classical sounds nice, but is not its strongest card, it could have more clarity and focused details..
If your are a Beats head, that damage your ears with hiphop, Skrillex and tekno at high volume, maybe your not satisfyed.
I cranked House of Pain Jump around in Poweramp, and that sounded nice.
HTC 10 should on the papers have better audio sound tho.
But I want to know if the Huawei P10 is ready with drivers to connect a Dac via USB for example Dragonfly.
I ask this because alot of other people wants to know the same.
Works with ESS chipset in the B&O modular for the LG G5.
I prefer to disable DTS. Nice sound but the volume is a little lover than Htc
I just want to give my opinion on this:
I have both the Axon 7 and the P10 Plus and I must say that output is better in the P10 Plus, and I don't understand why.
I don't know what kind of sorcery does DTS mode, but it pumps the sound in a really nice way.
When you disable DTS, Axon 7 sounds better in HiFi res.
Probably is because there is no way to use the AKM DAC on the Axon 7 with a proper equalization, so even when the sound is good, it can't be used along the Dolby Atmos feature. Dolby Atmos only kicks in when using the speakers, or if you want to use it with headphones, it will automatically change to Snapdragon DAC. So far there is no way to use Atmos and the AKM dac together.
I'm using Sony XBA-H1 which I find pretty decent earbuds to test this.
:good:
Its Confirmed by Huawei that P10 use the latest Hi6403 soundchip (typical with Kirin960) that supports Hi-Rez
Its rumoured that Harman Kardon, and Yamaha Commercial Audio group has worked on the sound in P10
It's just to bad that the amplifier is to weak. It makes the volume lower than the competitors.

I don't know, but this P10 Plus sounds better than my Axon 7, and is supposed that Axon 7 is the best audio phone.
Activating DTS make everything more punchier and richier.
The Audio quality is great. But the low volume might be because of some EU regulations.

Problem is that we don't have a way to equalize the output using the high quality dog, because as long as we turn on Dolby Atmos, it changes to Qualcomm one.
Is a pity we don't have a stock or default equalizer besides Dolby Atmos, because is useless if we want the best quality out of the headphone jack.

Using stock music player with my Trinity Master IEM (2BA drivers, 1 dynamic) and it has the best sound output so far among my existing devices (xiaomi mi3, nexus 5, oppo f1s). The sound is crisp and full. With DTS, everything sounds louder but more artificial.

Does Nokia 7 Plus support Hi-Res Audio output?
Use poweramp alpha version for hi res output.
LDAC support already shown for the sony wi-h700 on android p dev beta
I am using poweramp alpha version 705 and the output via jack is 24bit 384Khz.

I have now bought a N7+ myself and I can comment more thoroughly on this.
I was intrigued by the above comment as to my knowledge, sample rates beyond 192khz are reserved for the flagship snapdragon 835 and 845 processors.
I went into a shop and downloaded some 352.8khz samples for 2l.no and to my surprise, not only did they work in google play music, but it sounded great.
Using USB Audio Player plus, I can see that the 352.8khz audio is being downsampled to 192khz for playback by android, I have no idea how the downsampling is done and I would rather it have been downsampled to an exact multiple, but nonetheless at those sample rates, it still sounds great. If you're an audiophille, you'll have an external dac anyway, it's just convenient to be able to play it back.
Dsd dsf files also playback in google play music, and in usb audio player pro, when output to the Android system, they are being output as 24bit 176.4khz.
I accept this as this content is extremely rare, and flagship grade, you're not going to get everything in a midrange phone.
I'll post screenshots and elaborate more on this later.
What I will say is that the headphone output and amp on the N7+ is solid and very decent, it's not as good as the LG Quad Dac on the g7/v30 but it more than does the job for listening to music even on some over ear headphones. It just makes the removal of the headphone jack on many flagship and Apple phones infuriating when you can get hi res audio this easily!

I totally agree with you, The headphone output is so much better in N7+ compared to similar priced devices in market.
I also own an OP2, OP3, OP3t and LgV20 and among all of these LG is on top followed by N7+ which is saying something about this device.

Poor Audio Headphone Output

I just noticed that, GSMAREANA reported: " As far as quality degradation is concerned - we saw an average increase in stereo crosstalk, but that was mostly it. "
does anyone (who own the phone) notice this?
im about buying it, but i'm worried i will regret cuz i always use wired headphones and dont want to go near wireless ones.
Headphone output is normal, no difference when comparing with the s8 on miui 10.
Can't complain, it works fine
I am let down by mi Mi 8 headphone amplifier sound quality compared to my mom's past year A1 (less than half the price). I have compared one to one with some .flac files using my Audio-Technica ATH-M50X 38-ohm phones, foobar2000 player, no sound processing and find the A1 amp better in overall sound quality: clearer, more powerful and better mids. I consider myself audiophile and I trust my ears. Mi A1 headphone amp even rivalises with my Onkyo A-9010 integrated amp, I like mids better on Mi A1 although the Onkyo is more powerful and energetic at high volume. Mi 8 doesn't sound bad, it's ok but it's simply not as powerful and mid-frequencies are not as present or detailed. I had a 200€ Wiko Ridge 4G from 2015 that had also remarkable headphone quality, I wish I had it to compare.
It's known that the A1 has a good headphone amp capable of high output and I realised it as soon as I heard it. But I don't understand that it can beat a flagship from this year. It makes me want to downgrade to it.
Loudspeaker from Mi 1 is also more powerful than Mi 8. Mi 8 loudspeaker sound quality is better (has more highs) than Mi A1 at low volumes, but is not very powerful and distorts sooner. Mi A1 has more 'body'.

Download PowerAmp (it's pay), select to enable the Hi-Res output (24 bit @ 192khz) of our sound chip and also enable DIRECT sound options (which hits the hardware directly and really boosts sound output too). The sound output is great from our phones. The standard audio app is a joke and isn't hi-def output and isn't boosted. The Mi8 has the built in 24bit hires sound chip (because of the Snapdragon processor), and just needs apps to take advantage of it. Bluetooth can be also be enabled for hidef output in the developer options of our phones. That will also enable PowerAmp to stream hi-def over Bluetooth. The Mi8 hardware is great, it's just the shi**y Xiaomi choices they make in software.

Thanks Agimax but no software or upsampling is going to improve sound quality. It is dependent on hardware electronics: not as much the chip as the D/A converter and signal amplifier. A1 reportedly has a 10V amp built in, more powerful than most. I have played with ViperAudio API and while it's useful for gain and effects, it does not improve the amp quality per se.
I haven't checked our amplifier, I I'm not doubting we might have a weaker output - However, PowerAmp bypasses the standard APIs and hits the chip directly. The sound quality improves greatly and can't be compared to Viper or any other flash able enhancement. Use the trial period of the PowerAmp player (enable 24bit and Direct in settings) and hear the difference as I think you will be in amazement. 24 bit sound output without the crappy APIs or enhancements that cause distortion. I would have agreed with you until using the HiDef 24bit Direct chip mode.
Also, how sure are you we have a smaller output amp? All the values are programmable through the OS sound file with root, the amp gains are fully programmable. I will try to lookup the hardware amp when I get time.
One more piece of info, the Amp volume is limited on the Mi8 from factory by Xiaomi based on the region you pick in the OS. In order to get full volume, I had to go into settings and pick India. The volume jumps huge. It's just an FYI, in case you didn't know.
Yes, you're right! I'm amazed..
Using PowerAmp and HiRes 44.1kHz output improves on the Mi 8... It bypasses the internal android upsampler to 48kHz and plays at native 44.1kHz. It also gets proper gain and becomes a close call with A1 now!
With the Mi A1 the improvement is not as noticeable to me, maybe because on HiRes output it can't play at native 44.1, it's forced to 48 upsampling and doesn't do 24 bits, stays at 16. So I used the SoX upsampler to48Khz to stay locked.
I have compared both to my Audinst mx-1 usb dac in linux and I still have to say I like the A1 better! The Audisnt has much more power but sounds more digital, the A1 has more delicacy in the mids. It's a close call but I'd still give the edge to the Mi A1 over Mi 8. In terms of volume Mi 8 has more in reserve but rythm, plucking, dynamics is better on A1. Mi 8 would have a bit of an edge more fidelity, but it is less cohesive. Maybe with lesser impedance ( < 38 ) phones it would sound better. Channel separation is very close.
Still I am impressed by PowerAmp direct output. It's true that Android's default sound engine resamples everything at 48 kHz for mixing with a fast, low complexity resampler. Experimental Direct HiREs output allows for 24-bit, native sampling and up to 192 Khz SoX upsampling on the Mi 8, and also uses intelligent gain for volume which optimizes the internal amplifier. It also has 'native' OpenSL ES (as foobar2000 app) output wich still upsamples to 48Khz for headphones.
I feel relieved now, but the A1 is an impressing phone, it sounds as good (maybe still a little better) as Mi 8 on both headphones and loudspeaker. A1 runs as smooth on Andoid Pie with 4 Gb RAM and 64 Gb memory. They are the same size and weight the same. Mi 8's Amoled is softer and easier to the eyes, but for white backgound pages it's white is more lively and less yellow. Colors are better on Mi 8 for pictures. Don't get me wrong, I love My new Mi 8, but what a good phone A1 is..

Mate, I had a Poweramp but I didnt know about this option. Mi 8 sounds great now! Its much, much better, louder, with more power (OOF!). Great advice, thanks.
Im only dissapointed because I can use that quality in YouTube for example... Its annoying, I have to download my favourite songs to phone and then launch Poweramp. Ehh Xiaomi.

How to enable direct sound options? Thank you.
The power of Mi8 be with you
By enabling it in poweramp output settings ?
