Mi 8 brick or no brick? Need Data recovery - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

Dear Members of the XDA forum,
i am a lucky owner of the mi 8 128GB version (global) but during my last holidays (4 days ago) it somehow came in contact with water...not dropped but rather water came into the security bag for....hours? ^^"""
i then and i have no idea how and why it should work..put it into a bowl of rice for 2 days and tried to charge it...the charging indicator lights up, when i press the power button i can feel a little vibration, but no screen...all is black....strangely my car detects the bluetooth connection. When i try to connect it via USB to my PC the PC says "Mi 8" but is unable to install the driver and says the device is not working properly. When i start my device into recovery mode (still no screen) and connect it to my PC ...the Android Bootloader Interface drivers are working perfectly, i even can use fastboot commands to restart phone etc.
Now my big question is....am i able to somehow get my hands on the photos/videos stored on the device? cuz i think not only the screen is broken. (btw. haven't opened it yet)
sorry if this is somehow a double post or i am asking like a nub.
Thanks for all your help in advance

Unfortunately Rice is a myth, the correct solution is isopropyl alcohol.
You need to completely disassemble the phone and clean the corrosion on the contacts with a lint free cloth or kit such as these which I plan to order as well I would not use a standard bottle of alcohol, you can buy contact cleaning isopropyl alcohol made specifically for issues such as this.
Do not further attempt powering on your device, if by any chance you haven't already shorted the phone out , isopropyl alcohol will get you backup and running again.
Finally, the screen will take a little longer to dry than the boards, let everything setup and dry for 3 days before reassembly.
Edit : I just found out that WD-40 make a contact cleaner
I have used CRC recently and its great too. : https://www.amazon.com/CRC-05103-El...NME4DQKZ88H&psc=1&refRID=A82N4B41HNME4DQKZ88H

Yesterday i opened up my phone and almost every part looked white XD i then tried to remove the corrosion with isopropyl, it looks like the contact for the screen is heavily damaged some pins are pure black. After cleaning i tried connecting it again. Nothing new...screen is black, Windows lists the mi 8 as a device but nothing more, recovery boot works...with fastboot, unfortunately usb debugging is not activated so ADB is no option. Also when my win 10 pc recognizes the mi 8 phone it lists it as a MTP-Device but yeah nothing else....the MI Suite also does not see the phone....so since it is booting (waht i guess) i hope i can find a spare display somewhere to test what is shown on the screen..maybe this is my only option to get my data....which is probably fine...i think T_T
Anyone knows where i can find cheap replacement displays for mi 8? is mi 8 LITE or SE same display? e b a y wants 100€ for one...which is too much for me :/
thanks in advance

I hate to say it, but I would consider this a loss, to many components will be fried. So there is no point in sinking money into attempting repair.
If the accident happened at home, and you have renter's or homeowners insurance you maybe able to get them to contribute towards buying a new device. Otherwise it's unfortunately a complete loss.
If you end up buying another Mi8, I use and recommend the love Mei Case which is water proof/resistant and may have saved your device in this scenario. https://www.amazon.com/XIAOMI-Waterproof-Shockproof-Aluminum-Protection/dp/B07G2XWYKV

Trackball boot

PLZ help im freaking out. i accidentally booted into the blue light mode, but when i pulled the battery and rebooted the backlight wouldnt work. i could see everything and even navigate my phone but only under a light. the backlight just wont turn on during boot and changing the setting doesnt help.
i dont get it the thing was working 10 minutes ago and now i cant use it what should i do? i love this phone but i cant afford a new one. is there a way to tell it to turn on during boot in the console?
ok new update the backlight works if i have the keyboard open. i know 100% its software and not the screen. something when wrong with the boot prosses or something.
i think the trackball boot (bluelight boot) must have options but wont display on the screen maybe. like a bios menu. this is very infuriating
Why don't you restore a recent backup?
i have even went as far as downgrading with the .nbh file. and re installing the bootloader (Just the original, didnt want a brick).
Definitely NOT a software problem.
This is a HARDWARE problem -- hence the fact that it works when the keyboard is open.
When you pulled the battery, you might have twisted/pulled something.
*** I would check the ribbon cable connecting the display to the main body!!!
Bluelight mode (where you end up by booting with the trackball pushed in), is just a serial console allowing interfacing with the radio firmware. Unless you actually had a serial cable connected and punched in some commands (which happen to be security locked, therefore wouldn't work for you anyways), bluelight mode wouldn't be able to do this.

if that were the case than wouldnt it flicker if i flex the screen/hinge ? ill try anything at this point cuz im outa warranty and have no money . im going to the store later trying to update to official 1.6 so i can convince them its software related and they may replace it for me.
oh forgot to mention that if i close it and open it the light stays off untill i hit end and unlock with menu again. im not to sure if that helps.
OK OK OK you are right. i just half closed it and the light stayed on untill it compleatly closed (so the screen flipped, i thought that is what triggered it) and then i got it to stay on completely closed and then the problem flipped to it wouldnt come on while open and now back to the way it was. so im going to go buy a T5 screw driver today and clean the contacts of the ribon cable and reinsert it (i have had experience with that just need to know what ribon. a pic would be nice)

lol ok didn't know that a lot of the devices I have taken apart have had 2 one for the desplay and one for the backlight. Getting a T5 screw driver in half an hour. Will post results later. Hopefully this works, therr area few more ppl with the same problem.

There are two wires going to the screen.. sounds like the "top" one is loose... The jtag photos will give you an idea (it's the two com ports next to the jtag test points)
These are usually taped down very well..
Also you need both a T5 and T6.. the "Security" (has black void sticker) screw is larger than the others.. and a small flat head screwdriver to unclip the cover..
If all else fails: replacement screens seem much cheaper than the phone on ebay.

ok got it apart 3 times and no luck its prolly the ribbon cable. im going to test that soon. i have a donor phone comming soon from a friend who dropped it in water, the ribbon cable should be fine to use. if that doesnt work im thinking maybe it is software. either way if i cant get it fixed by next month im spending $410 on a new mytouch 3G brand new from the store and getting insurance XP

I dropped my phone in the toilet! help!

Hey guys, need some help here, I was takin a leak while texting and I dropped my phone in lol. Well I tried the soaking in rice trick, it helped, it turns on now but the touch screen and key board don't work. Its really slow and almost unresponsive. the menu talk home back and end buttons seem to barely work. So here's the deal, I need my contacts off the phone. I have some saved to the sim but most were saved to the phone. I can't get to the home screen because I have a lock pattern, and the touch screen doesn't work. I never did that google sync deal so I can't log in and get them from google. What can I do guys? Please help.

Buy a new phone
That's genius good thinking. I don't care about the phone I just need to get the contacts off, does anybody know a way?
If you can ADB into the phone, you may still be able to pull the files off. I don't know how useful they would be on anything but a rooted Android phone though (meaning I don't know how Android stores the contact info.)
Sorry man but what's adb? And its not rooted or modified in any way. I tried using mymobiler but that didn't work either
Install the latest SDK tools here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
and to install them' follow these directions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
Ok ill try that tonight when I get home, but am I gonna be able to install that on my phone the way it is? It will boot up to the lock pattern screen but I can't go any farther than that
You don't need to mount your phone or anything
just connect the phone via USB cable to the computer and install the drivers.
The instructions are also on the 2nd link I've given you.
Let it dry then turn on.
Put it in the sun and use a blow dryer to attempt and salvage it...
Sucks man, never had it happen to me but someone very wise told me the above.
pull apart
rinse with rubbing alcohol
let dry
place on aluminum foil
place in oven ~ 200 for 10-20 minutes
let cool
reassemble
power on and hope for the best
Or put in a baggy full of rice.
actually if put it in a bowl (a bag will trap moisture) of wheat or long grain rice (no uncle bens) and let it soak. Its happened to me before and the rice sucks out the moisture everytime. Take phone apart, battery, sdcard sim let it sit in rice for a few days.
Don't watch it though, its worse than watching water boil. Give up on it, and let it surprise you with a Dream.

water had minerals in it that conduct electricity.... and moisture in the air could cause it to conduct and kill the phone even more/all the way. rice will not remove the minerals. alcohol on the other had does, and evaporates. baking it removes the moisture
This worked for me before
It wasn't an android phone but I've dropped a window's mobile phone and it JUST SO HAPPENS to end up right in a cup of juice. Not only that, but I put it in a bowl of water to make sure the circuits didn't get messed up from dried up sugar per advice from someone on google and then took the battery, back sim card, etc out/apart and sat it in front of a fan for a few days. After about the 4th or 5th (I don't remember) it came back on. The screen wasn't "FULLY" functional until a couple of days after that, but you might at least be able to get it on enough to get your info. Hope that helps.....
I'm 99% sure you DID log into Google. If you're not rooted I'm 100% sure you logged into Google. After that contacts auto sync is pretty much automatic to your Google account unless you are a complete idiot and disabled it from settings.
Phones are too complicated for DIY stuff, hardware-wise at least.
When you drop a phone (or any electronic device) in water, the first thing you do is pull out the battery immediately, and all other power inputs, and don't even think about touching the power button, and then take it to a professional repair shop.
Phones contain BGA chips, which is complicated and hard to deal with, the slightest moisture under or in the chip (that's right, inside the chip, read about BGA Baking) might cause disasters, or at least instability, and only professionals trained in the BGA & Phones (not just any pro) field should handle it.

And about the contacts problem, could you give us more info, like SPL version? totally Stock ROM? RC29?
If you get a recovery image on this phone, you can do a BART backup, and restore it on another one, and get your contacts, should work, but I never tried it.
Ok guys this is what I have so far. its been soaking in rice for a while now, but I was an idiot and powered it on right after I got it wet, I also powered it on several times periodically to check on it. I can still turn it on now but like I said keyboard and touch screen are f***ed. I'm using my new g1 so I don't feel like quoting everybody so ill just go like this,
To the guy that gave me the guide on installing the sdk, here's the issues I'm having. I'm unable to even get sdk setup to work. I downloaded the drivers, I put them in the android sdk folder which is on c:/. When I connect my phone even though I uninstalled the driver fot android with deviewer every time I would reconnect it, it automatically reinstalled the android driver as a mass storage device. So I went into the control panel and installed the adb driver manually. Now when I connect it, it pops up as android adb. However sdk setup still doesn't work. When I click setup it flashes a command prompt for a split second and does nothing else. Ill also say my pc is junk and and I can't open cmd or task manager for some reason(virus maybe?) So what am I missing here?
To whoever asked what version and stuff the phone is, I believe its the latest update and I haven't done any soft mods to it, not rooting or anything.
To whoever said something about doing a BART back up and transferring files to my new g1, how do I do that? that's what I really need to do.

before moisture sensitive components (IC/BGA/FBGA/etc) are run through assembly those components are brought up to 125c (257f) for 4 hours to drive the moisture out. then they are place on the PBC with the pick and place after they get the solder mask. then placed into the soldering oven.

maybe its just the way you wrote it... but you know the rice should be dry.......
Stop powering it on. you will need to wait several days
Maybe I should try the alcohol thing? I did drop it in a toilet full of dank piss bowl cleaner. I just don't want to take a risk of frying it if something messes up before I get the files off

[Q] usb not working on SGS Captivate, just for charging

Alright, I tried first with the stock rom: different usb cables, kies, installing uninstalling samsung drivers, double twist, on a mac and on windows 7, and nothing works, no matter what I tried, none of that could show me the notification bar asking for what to do with the usb connection. Of course I tried setting the phone on debugging mode and on mass storage, also ask everytime, etc.
Finally I decided to leave the stock rom and move to Cognition froyo, in order to discard a hardware issue. Thanks to Rom manager I could make it without needing the usb at all.
Once in Cognition v2.3b8 I crossed my fingers and looked to the sky (even considering that I'm atheist) and plug in the usb to my computer.... and nothing happens besides the phone charging.
Can I say right now that this is definitely a hardware issue?
Some people here are use to say, "if it's charging, definitely it's a drivers issue", but after moving to a new rom, and trying in three computers (two windows and one mac) it is a drivers issue that I can fix without buying a captivates motherboard?
Please help me out here and I'll buy you a beer, a blue moon one if you like ;P
Have you played with your USB settings; debugging, mounting SD card etc?

I'm pretty sure there's a problem with your USB cable if it's not the drivers. Try using a different cable and check.. Should work!
I am having the same issue and I took it to AT&T device warranty center and they found that the USB side on the phone had some water corrosion in it and therefore my warranty is voided. I also went down the path of installing drivers, different OS but this seems to be close. now If some can tell me how to clean this port...awesome
Is the water sensitive patch under the battery still white?

First make sure its not the usb cable. Main power leads in cable usually hold up but smaller wire leads are much more fragile and the only symptom you may get is either wont be recognized and/or usb registers as data connection on the dropdown menu. Ive had a captivate with a corrosion problem but Ive also had a Samsung cable that had broken shorted out data lead but still charged fine.
You can clean port with fingernail emery board cut to shape and stripped on one side of board to proper thickness. Its a five minute mod to a 99 cent board.

I've seen long threads of people who reported the same issue: no actual water damage, but a messed up USB port and their warranties being unjustly denied. Try cleaning the contacts in the phone's microUSB port with a coffee filter dabbed in rubbing alcohol, or scratching at them with a thin wire.
I'm currently having USB port issues with my brand new replacement Captivate (phone sometimes randomly thinks it's plugged in when it isn't, thinks it isn't plugged in when it is), haven't had any luck fixing them yet.
If there's no visual residue on the charging port, they cannot rightfully void your warranty. The captivate has 2 LDI's(Liquid Damage Indicators), one on the battery and one on the phone itself, behind the battery. As long as those two are white, and as long as there isn't a bunch of green crap on the charging port, they will replace it.
I work at AT&T, and we deal with this everrrrrrrrry day. 3 big rules with warranty swaps; LDI's need to be white, charging ports need to be intact and not corroded, and there needs to be no physical damage, any scratches or dings that you can feel with a fingernail are considered physical damage. We help people who terlet their phones get warranty exchanges sometimes, nothing an exacto knife and some raw effort can't fix. AT&T is a weak beast, be assertive and they will bend to your will.
In all honesty though, just make the charging port as clean as you can and call in. Ask for a supervisor, tell them it's a documented defect with a recent wave of Captivates, and you won't hang up until they exchange it for you.
well thanks for the help, now I'm gonna check the white indicators and if the phones usb needs to be clean

I had that problem with my brand-new second Captivate out of the box. Not going to deal with warranty and bull**** water damage accusations, this is being returned to the retailer first chance I get.
I've had something weird happen as well. I've had my Captivate plugged into my PC using USB Debugging at least 10 - 15 times today. I also clicked "Mount" so I could transfer files that I have backed up.
Now suddenly it stopped working. I have jumped around using every port on my laptop (all 4). I have noticed it's acted weird before.
But now (without anything plugged in at all) the laptop keeps popping up saying USB Device Not Recognized.....even though I'm not trying to plug anything in.
Should I reinstall the Samsung 32 bit drivers? I did uninstall Kies today because I had no use for it. It was annoying to have Kies open every time I plugged in.
I have a captivate lying around which have the same problem, i/e the USB cable works fine for charging but not for PC connectivity.
Since it is a development phone, I just reverted to using adb wireless widget.
Other than that, after reading this thread, it seems to be a common issue.
I got my phone exchanged (again) and no USB or GPS problems this time. I got a grainier-looking screen though...meh can't complain really, since this is the only Captivate I've owned that doesn't have any major/hardware-related problems.
My USB not working ended up being my laptop (not phone). I had to unplug the power supply....shut down for a few minutes.....reboot and it worked. I had tried reinstalling the drivers but it did nothing.

I appreciate the advice use some acetone to remove the green stuff but phone is still being difficult when trying to connect to the pc ...be nice if samsung came up with something so there wouldnt be a possibility that water would get in the port
I've had this problem since i got my phone, and i've had it for months now.
Always thought it was drivers.
My last try was with the new AIO captivate tool box app and the drivers their.
For those of you that got replacements how did you go about this.
just go to the store? Or is there a number to call to do it over the phone?
It's just annoying not being able to transfer pictures and such off my phone, hell it worked with my iPhone. I know you can setup wifi file transfers, but if i'm at a friends house it would be nice just to be able to plugin the phone and transfer files too it.
I fixed this problem selling out the phone. Not joke.
BUT, thing is, that the buyer, couple days after the purchase, told me that he fixed this issue by simply restoring the phone to the stock rom through odin 1 click.
Why I didn't try that easy fix? Simply because I thought that the phone was already in the stock rom :S
Lesson learned: always double check if you're in stock rom or not. (obviously you don't need to do this if your purchased the phone brand new!)
It's really weird, a week ago my phone suddenly freezing while I was out, I took the battery off and put it back but it was stucking on AT&T logo scree. I've tried that for few times nothing changed, put it away and the next day tried for few more times and this time came up (also recovery mode and 3 buttons didn't work too).
Everything was look fine but had a problem it was when I plug the USB cable it's just showing the charge status, means couldn't connect the Phone to PC ,I tried with some other cables and PCs, also put hair dryer if possibly water went in but the problem was from the phone.. also when took the USB off the charging status was keep going. first thing I thought it would be the ROM, I had some other ROM in the memory to I flashed to another ROM, but the problem was still there.
tried many times nothing changed, I was almost wanted to grab a new one, till 2 nights ago after a week while it was charging I suddenly noticed that it can connected, I straight away got backups copied to PC and flashed to Stock, now everything looks fine after few days and it works good.
any suggestion on that? is it could be water inside or something?
My ROM was Cognition 2.3 at that time
hope it's not gonna happens again.
I had the same problem and it was a bad USB port any phones made before December '10 have had a lot of problems. Warranty gave me a replacement without question.

Nexus 6 USB Issues

Hi All,
So I've had my Nexus 6 for about 2 years now, but recently had some weird issues with USB connections and I'm pretty stumped. The issue itself is that my phone will not be recognized by Windows, it doesn't even display in device manager. If I type 'adb devices' in cmd, then no devices show. I've tried using USB Charging Only, P2P and MTP usb options specified in the settings. However, when I connect my phone through the wall, it says "Charging over USB", now if I remember rightly it used to say "Charging over AC", I'm still using the official Motorola plug that came with the phone. I still have access to TWRP, but phone can't connect to phone through fastboot. Also, my PC is running Windows 10, just in case this is a known issue - although I've scoured google and couldn't find any answers.
One last detail, I first noticed this issue around the time that I moved from stock to Pure Nexus + Franco Kernel, think it was around the first release of 7.1.1. I've got a feeling this is entirely coincidental and unfortunate timing, but figure it's a detail I'll include just in case it is relevant.
So here's what I've tried so far:
Different USB cable
Different device (hudl2 was recognized by Windows)
Different ROM, didn't install FK this time
Different ROM with FK
Reinstalling official google USB drivers
So any suggestions as to what the issue itself is (dead charging port maybe? Although seems strange it'd charge at USB speeds still) and any suggested fixes?
Thanks in advance

Below suggestions about the USB-port:
1.
Cleaning USB contacts with air pressure or a small brush wetted with alcohol.
2.
Check the connection with Windows:
Use a different phone; different cable.
3.
Connect your phone to a different PC. When working you know that there's no hardware failure.

Brilliant suggestions, I'd tried cleaning with a toothpick already but not a brush, so went out, bought a toothbrush (couldn't find any alcohol) and after very little effort it started to work. Thank you so much, you have just saved me from buying a new phone

Isopropyl alcohol can be found at either Wal-mart or your local pharmacy for around $1.50 to $2.00 a bottle. Just be sure to use 89% or above, you don't want to lower as it would have too much water content, maybe even causing damage. 91% is very common in stores and alot of times the only option, I like to use 99% but you may have to hunt some down lol. Also very very soft toothbrushes are fine, but what I found works even better are the tiny, thin, very soft makeup brushes as you can fit the entire thing in the port allowing greater contact area when cleaning, also they are amazing for cleaning out the Nexus 6's speaker grills, they fit every nook and cranny, but most importantly, holding them at an extreme angle the bristles actually can fit up under the plastic guard of the speaker between it and the grill mesh without any worry of damaging it. Try it out and you would be amazed by just how much random debris get trapped between the guard and mesh. Just make sure if you are gonna "borrow" your girlfriends, wifes, or daughters brush, you clean it very very good with the isopropyl alcohol first, wouldn't want to give your phone a new, messy, smudgy, paint job lol. Also for the debris such as fuzz and dirt that are extremely packed down into the port, alot of times even shining a bright light, you cannot tell there is a layer of crud stopping your cable from inserting fully (I have cleaned some unbelievably disgusting phones people bring me over the years) I use a pair of ifixit's fine tip ESD safe tweezers and a lot of lighting along with a dab of patience lol. Just have to be careful, most importantly, not in a rush, and you can get it clean as day 1.

Question MIUI 13 bricked my Mi 11. How to recover?

Hello, guys!
So, two days ago I just checking my phone left on the table, a notification arrived, when I unlocked it, the phone turned off and has never returned. It has around 22% battery, and I have been using it for only 7 months. There was no physical damage (cracks, water damage, etc) or overheating. The phone (chinese market with global rom) was updated to the last MIUI 13 OTA around one week ago.
The phone:
- Wont turn on (none of the buttons combo work/ no fastboot)
- No sign of charging using any charger, neither through wireles or usb
- My PC doesnt recognize the usb connection at all
Since I had to import it, the warranty is long gone. Ive read about shorting the testpoint for getting into EDL mode. I just bought the tools and gonna try to do it and contact the telegram guy again (he told that he can only help me when I get the usb working).
I am really disappointed with this. I have a 6 years old Mi 4C and a 4 years old Xiaomi A1 and they both still work, never expected a phone to be gone so fast and completely by itself.
Since I lack hope on making the EDL work, is there anything else I can do?
Every thread I read, people at least can get their USB to work.
Thanks!
