[EXPERIMENTAL] Throttling and it's caveats - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Guides, News, & Discussion

While being owner of my Redmi Note 7, which definitely has some issues, I started experimenting with it.
Throttling is a common term amongst electronics and such. It's a way to safe our precious silicon from eventually cooking under high temperatures. There're a lot of issues involved here. Let me explain:
Xiaomi's belief is maximizing battery life while forgetting about optimal device's performance. Here's the issue, though - neither of which are properly calibrated. For a battery of this size, you would expect something better, but it's not. Looking through system files, there are several thermal config files, which simply tells to the thermal-engine binary at what state device should throttle. Sounds like a good idea, right? Yeah, not quite.
Upon opening these exact config files you see several lines, which describe temperature thresholds and which frequency device should start to use under it's determined state. There's more to this - GPU gets less voltage when it's getting warmer, thus reducing the ability for GPU to reach higher power levels. Everything would be great, if the device wouldn't start to throttle it's clocks at 45° degrees, which is basically nothing.
After seeing device's guts it's safe to state, that our phone has proper cooling done to it. Sure, it's basic, but with that much space and the price this phone is built for, you couldn't ask for better cooling.
So, what can you do to it?
There're several solutions.
-Deleting thermal-engine entirely and forgetting about the problem. Here's the thing, though - it's really dangerous, because not only you lose the ability to monitor your battery's temperature, you could cook your phone while charging. Charging throttling is a thing too, when phone slows down pulling current from a wall as soon as you are doing something intensive. It's a dirty fix with a lot of risks involved.
-Modifying thermal config tables. This way you could ensure device's safety while having optimal device's performance.
-Mounting hugeass cooler at the back of your phone or better yet - mounting cooler straight to the cpu silicon. Jokes aside, this is not recommended at all, unless you're insane and don't care about sacrificing device's size.
I'm actually thinking about making completely custom thermal tables and make them compatible with Magisk. Even if Magisk method wouldn't ensure enough confidence, I will make flashable zip for recovery flashers. Everyone's happy.

-But the device has kernel level throttling monitor. That one works too, right?
-Yes, but it does not do anything related to cpu clock management and such. All it does is turning off your device entirely when undesirable temperatures are reached. Thermal-engine is what's monitoring temperatures and adjusting clocks when necessary. Kernel level throttling is there for additional safety, in case thermal-engine is not working properly.
-My device runs great. Why bother modifying what Xiaomi did?
-It's up to you to do anything with your purchase. If you are happy, it's fine, leave it as it is.
-I noticed hugely increased benchmark scores and games working smoother after deleting thermal-engine. Is that normal?
-Exactly. Here's your answer to what thermal-engine actually does. It hampers our device too much.
-When are you going to research this modification?
-As soon as I'm free from doing routinal things: school, job, home and such.

theres currently 2 thermalmod magisk module for our device, one is jthermal and the other is thermalx, currently using thermalx and it essentially removes thermal throttling, highest temp i got was 48°c playing pubg at smooth+extreme settings at noon.

I do not recommend using these mods! They completely remove the limits, leaving the phone vulnerable to overheating during charging.

Thanks! I got a hold of the thermalX one. Registered on 4pda and downloaded it.

Install ACCA from magisk and you'll be able to control max temperature while charging

I have tested the jthermodv3 and my battery icon went red warning. I have disabled it instantly and restarted and now vibration doesnt work.

Yesterday I flashed this module on latest xiaomi.eu beta and everything is working perfectly. Maybe it works only with MIUI based ROMs?

It "works" on any rom, but it is not recommended, it lets your phone get really hot, and it destroys the battery life

Yes, I know. Everything in life is a trade. I'm willing to lose some battery lifespan for performance. Not being able to play games @60fps is unacceptable.

Possible. I was at PE 10 Beta. Maybe it's because of the SDK differences.

Most of the custom roms reuse already available binaries and stuff from MIUI, unless dev is clever enough to transition fully to CAF, so it should work, I think.
From what I've seen, MIUI is not any different when it comes to thermal configurations. Both of them use the same binary and same configs (they might be changed, not sure)

Good workaround (Kernel/Firmware) against overheating?

Hello guys I got some huge problems here.
I recently switched from my Z2 to the Z3+ and actually like the phone but the overheating is insane and especially kills Pokemon Go through CPU throttling, which runs smoothly on my old Z2 .
So far I am on 253, cleaned it up and tried a self modified and the zach beta9 Kernel and and runs quite bad on both. Is heating a lesser issue of 224? I actually do not want to reflash the whole system to 224 just to find out it doesn't get better.
Also is there a way to undervolt/underclock? I can change settings in Kernel Aduitor but I have the feeling the phone doesn't really care.

Try Zach beta 8 kernel. Limit max cpu frequency by kernel auditor.
Still it's only your Goodluck if your device cools down. It's a bitter truth about this model.

no there was no thermal improvements between these builds, dont flash your system back
but do underclock and tell us the results!
Im also affected by your exact problem

Edit: Today I have flashed 256, haven't found any improvement. As per my experience 256 haven't brought any noticable change.

Tested zach beta8, didn't help. Now I am testing http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/orig-development/kernel-om5z-kernel-t3421630/ as suggested and if that doesn't help much also with http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/general/kill-overheating-flash-zip-t3421782.
And Stamina Mode helps at least a bit.
Statusreport: It always runs bad. But best at the moment with root patched Stock Kernel (253) and that underclocking zip. Although I think that underclocking doesn't really help at all.

What are your temps? When does it start to throttle? Done any thermal-conf configuration to allow more heat?

I know that @Trilliard has a very good and stable cpu governor where he has disabled two of the little and two of the big cores, this helps a lot if you underclock the remaining 4

UPDATE: Added my edited files used to apply CPU tweaks (cores down clocked to 0.9 and 1.2ghz, two core disabled, tweaked cpu governor, power and others mods) and these files located in etc folder. Replace them and set correct permissions then reboot.

Actually I didn't know about this combination - I will try it thanks!
Do you know about a thermal-conf? Actually never tried one. The phone gets hot indeed but I still think there might be some space before it actually melts.

Thats what i thought as well i have my own here, its based on another persos post, but i dont remember where...
Anyways, his camera mod worked, but cpu throttle was not tampered with, and it caused a very unbalanced throttling... Ok yay i can use the camera linger and fluently, but when i exit the camera app, i cant use the phone couse its runnig at 348 mhz...
So i i did some modifications to it cpu never get under 840 for little cores, so your phones menues end web browsing are always safe from performance drops.
I made it to be able to play Pokemon go, and achieved a lot better resault than without any changes.. still prefer playing on my shield tablet, but if i dont have it around when theres a lot od pokestops nearby, then this will work for me.
While playing Pokemon go it does not go over 80 degrees, but using snapshat it can get to 85, so dont use snap for to long

Im using stock kernel, may switch to another soon. Im using stock bcause of batterylife and idle power consumption

According to my observations the phone gets hot and then cold. I think the throttle is more aggressive and needed and I want to make it less aggressive.

I made my own modifications to the thermal engine. It is pretty bad for battery I guess but I had a very good expierence playing Pokemon Go with it today. Yes the phone gets hot. Like it doesn't drop below 70°C while playing and regulary hits 80°C but it works good. No dark screen, no 0 CPUs downclocking. So far it's fine for me, maybe I get squeeze even more out of it.

Still working good for me. Not sure if I can really squeeze out more and as long as it works at the moment I do not have a good motivation to try anything else.
No idea about SoT. Always running around with a powerbank. Probably bad, it is not designed for good battery life.

Red Magic Vs OnePlus 5T speed test

Hello guys, I've got the OnePlus 5T and I was looking to upgrade to the Red Magic eventually but after watching that speed test video https://youtu.be/okGb8lqg8fA I don't see the RM being any faster and the active cooling seems to be a gimmick of some sort as it runs hotter than the OnePlus 5T as shown in that video. I know the firmware is not final but I seriously doubt they'll do any miracles especially in the stock version...but in the same time I'm scared of getting the Chinese version because it probably won't support Play Store and so on. What do you guys think, should I keep the OP5T?
Well hopefully we'll see more optimization before long on the RM. I haven't had any heat issues, and it has seemed cooler than most. Even when I was running an app to intentionally drain the battery by activating everything it didn't get that hot.
Overall for general performance, you won't see much performance difference between the two. They use a lot of the same components. Theoretically you should see some performance gains with game boost on because it locks the last four cores to their max frequency. No operations used trying to dynamically adjust. Really depends on if the app would even benefit from the frequency boost though.

I guess if the game button triggers the full potential of the CPUs that's why it heats up more than the OP5T which never runs on 100% but somehow manages pretty much the same frame rates. You must be right about whether an app can actually utilise the full potential or not.

Old post revived. But did you see the stress test of antutu in that video ? Nubia tries to stay almost to 100% all the time. That's how a gaming aka performance phone should be.

How much battery and CPu temp you have while idle?

Sustained performance isnt as good as Samsung hoped

So I just got my new phone and while I was installing apps from Google Play restoring from backup, I decided to run a geekbench benchmark on it, and well the results are attached as below. Don't get me wrong I know that performance is supposed to be lower, especially given that it is still installing apps, but the device isn't even hot and I would have expected it to score at least a 7 or 8 K. 5K is really quite disappointing.
Talk about a strange thread. I wonder what compels someone to think it's a good idea to benchmark while installing apps and then trying to quantify that with the phone has poor sustained performance? That's a bit of a reach, don't you think?

Do us a favor and return the phone if you're disappointed with the performance from a benchmark and not real life testing.
This is like having a gasoline truck that normally gives you 16 mpg. Then you slap on a tow hitch and haul a 5 ton tailer and you're surprised the truck now only gives you 9-10 mpg.

So, you think that the device doesn't use any system resources while restoring data and installing apps?
I hope you are just trolling or I(and the other fellow members) didn't understand you correctly, otherwise - it's normal. Benchmarks are run while the device DOES NOT do anything else. Otherwise system resources are used and the scores will be lower. By how much will depend on the workload. For example GPU bench will not be affected that much as a CPU or storage test while installing apps.

Some system resources? Yes. I'm just rather surprised it's close to half of such a powerful phone's resources.
Benchmark people are the reason I left the PC scene. No one judges anything in tech based on what it's actually used for, only what it can or can't potentially do. And that's the reason the industry is crappy and overpriced as it is. Same thing has happened to the phone industry.
You ran a benchmark that pushes your device to limits you will NEVER EVER get it to again with daily usage. Not even if you're playing music while playing Fortnite and other apps in the back.

This might help you. Android apps are written in Java. This allows them to be compatible with a wide variety of Android devices. When you install them on your phone, they are compiled to machine code specific to your particular device. This only needs to happen when you first install or subsequently update your app. However, this process is pretty resource intensive, and larger apps like Facebook take more resources. This slows down the rest of the phone. So the worst possible time to run a benchmark is when you are doing the most system intense thing you can do on your phone. The results are unsurprising and normal.

Xiaomi must optimize the 660 chip.

i bought this phone last week, i am not satisfied with this phone, it gets hot when browsing, lag when playing games(because of the unstable high speed clock), i checked using the aida64 app and the big cores clock speed easily reach 2.2 ghz speed. that was unnecessary, even after turning the battery saver mode, the cores still easily touch 2.2 ghz. i already discussed this on the indonesian mi community, but then i got bullied, people saying it was my fault, not the phone. but there was many thread that complains about lag when playing games and bad battery life. i supose that was because the bad management of cpu cores.
note : i bought this phone in indonesia, with TAM (official) warranty
my rom is currently on the 10.3.6.0(PFGMIXM)
3+32GB model.

i bought this phone last week, i am not satisfied with this phone, it gets hot when browsing, lag when playing games(because of the unstable high speed clock), i checked using the aida64 app and the big cores clock speed easily reach 2.2 ghz speed. that was unnecessary, even after turning the battery saver mode, the cores still easily touch 2.2 ghz. i already discussed this on the indonesian mi community, but then i got bullied, people saying it was my fault, not the phone. but there was many thread that complains about lag when playing games and bad battery life. i supose that was because the bad management of cpu cores.
note : i bought this phone in indonesia, with TAM (official) warranty
my rom is currently on the 10.3.6.0(PFGMIXM)

It's very commom for any Snapdragon device to reach top clock speed when in use, download CPU-z and do a little scrolling to see that.
The lag in games you're getting is most probably because of the 3GB RAM of your variant not the CPU as SD660 can handle most mobile games with ease.
About battery life, how much SOT are you getting? RN7 should handle at least 6hrs with some heavy gaming included.
And about temperature, how much degrees is your device peaking at? Anything below 38ºC should be fine.
And lastly, about mi community......well, most people there look like VERY inexperienced users, i wouldn't take them as a parameter to prove your point.

3gb of ram is good enough for gaming unless ur playing a heavy game while on youtube and facebook at the same time. the problem with this phone is the aggressive thermal throttling, once the phone reaches 40°c the phone becomes noticeably slower.
my advice to OP is unlock ur bootloader flash some custom rom, custom kernel and root ur device until you find the performance/battery ur looking for.

3GB of RAM has not been fine for some time now, there is a lot of games you wouldn't be able to multitask with any other application with only 3GB.
Few examples: TES Blades, Fortnite, PS2 emulation.
Also what are you doing to reach 40° on your device? As for mine never passed 38° and I live in a hot country(Brazil).

thats my point, 3gb is enough for games as long as you dont multi task. and this phone is mid range.
im in Philippines, room temperature here is about 37° heavy games like pubg makes my phone temperature skyrocket reaching up to 45° especially with thermal mod.
btw MIUI has the worst ram management for this phone. its closing background apps like no tomorrow, but on any custom rom its actually quite decent.

Im on the same boat with you bro.
Just Dont bother the hardcore mi fans, especially indonesian mi fans, i know they are jackass sometimes (well Not all of them)
Yes the firmware is really not optimize, battery usage is really inconsistent (typical not optimize firmware)
All we can do is wait for the new OTA.
Strangely the PRO variant get more updated frequently (check official mi website)
But for us indonesian, we are stuck with NON PRO version if we want to use Official waranty hardware.

Thanks for all your reply, i apreciated it. probably i will wait until miui 11 released, and if the phone still gets hot i will install custom rom and use EX kernel manager to disable input boost and limit the cpu.
for bullying in the mi community, i guess its just troll account ? or the xiaomi guy ? every thread about battery gets bullied by those person only.

not true .. i've been using PE (and revolutionX) and Havoc since mai.
After being on EvolutionX for more than a month, i switched to MIUI EU (coz i missed it) but then went back to trying havoc .. 2 weeks now ZERO problems no heat/lag whatsoever

ever try miui.eu or masik?
these are very stable, miui-based custom ROMs with zero bloatware and better RAM management.
still a better ROM for people who want better performance / battery life on their xiaomi devices, but too afraid to live on the edge with AOSP ROMs.
AFAIK, that's called thermal-throttle/ing. When RN7 reach its peak performance and certain heat, to prevent overheat normally our device will slowing down its performance and it caused lags and fps drop for sure
I also encounter this problem when playing pubg even with smooth-ultra setting

and thermal throttling can be disabled by using a certain magisk module. although not recommended when ur playing for long period of time. i play max 3hrs highest temperature reached 45°c.

It happened to me, custom roms aren't good for gaming then switched back to MIUI, when I play phone gets 45 C max, my battery gives 6 hours of straight online gaming, I'm on MIUI Global 10.3.5, Evira kernel 3.8.

660 wasn't designed for battery efficiency. Still waiting for Franco Kernel, it might fix the issue. My Redmi Note 4x can last up to 10hrs SOT while my Redmi Note 7 can only reach 5hrs even with custom ROM+greenify installed.

Nope. With moderate use I barely get 7, mostly 6. I got this sot by using apps like line, wa, instagram, youtube, browsing, downloading tons of file and one match playing pubg and pes.
I reach 8 to 9 hours sot only if i using wifi and playing videos constantly, minimum social media and no gaming.
Ofc people used their phone different each others. But, im sure they are having same battery drain. People talk about this so many times and everywhere. Ur case having 10+ sot like only happen 1:10 of all lavender users.

Its true continuous gaming on this phone (with stock miui) is bad. You will get smooth gameplay only in short term, like a one match pubg. Then it will start to lag because of heat. We need to keep the phone temp as cool as possible when used for gaming to get less frame drop. Example, playing close to a fan or inside a room with air conditioner on.

Yes, thermal throttle where the main reason. Its limit cpu whenever temp -read by system- reach 43/44 degree. A temp read by system are mostly not indicate the real temp. Besides, we have clockspeed max at 2.2Ghz, making our phone faster to heats up easilly. Thats why thermal throttling the cpu in such early time. (Its ruins gameplay, isnt it? :v)
If we look inside thermal-engine.conf on lavender, it use two sensor for detection and two step for throttling the cpu. First step it will limit clockspeed by 1,5Ghz and 1,9Ghz. Second step it will limit clockspeed by 1,1Ghz and 1,4Ghz. Because the temp gap between these step are only 1°, so mostly thermal-engine will going to limit clockspeed by 1,1Ghz and 1,4Ghz. Imagine play pubg with that clockspeed, lags and frame drop will occurs oftenly.
I've seen Mi 8 Lite with the same chipset playing pubg continously without any frame drop. I took its thermal-engine configuration and compare them with lavender.
Interestingly there are specified profiles for gaming and pubg are missing on lavender. Thus, both thermal-engine are really different. A same chipset should having same thermal at least. But, this show us that lavender thermal thingy are not being optimized yet while mi8 lite does already.

Im gonna Re-Unlock my bootloader for the third times and use custom rom when they fix Hals. Till then i stay on miui hoping miuidev did an improvisation with next update.

Question Any idea if 12.0 rom has better thermals than the 12.5 roms?

Has anyone compared if the 12.0 releases have better thermal performance as compared to the 12.5 release?
My K20Pro running on 12.0 is much cooler than my 11Ultra running 12.5. Sure, people have been saying that the snapdragon 888 runs hot but at the same time I've been seeing reports that other devices include the Redmi Note series are also experiencing heat issues after updating to 12.5.
Honestly for me heating has never been an issue, what do you think a good thermal would be like for you?
Probably like not reaching 39C for anything non-gaming or video calling activity?

I felt the same way. I used it for 2 days with 12.0.9 when i got the mi11ultra and i didnt feel the heat. When i updated to 12.5 e felt it.
wondering if its possible to downgrade without bootloader unlocked?

Room temp doesn't matter, not when it comes to the 11Ultra. With AC on at a comfy 24C as opposed to just a fan with a room temp of 29C its still the same heating issues just a matter of the ramp up time for heat.

Damn, so its much better on 12.0.9? I'm going to flash 12.0.9 this weekend. AFAIK, downgrading either way will require a wipe and I think you'll need to unlock BL either way.
May be not what you are looking for, I rooted the phone for CustoMIUIzer tweak. I also installed Franco kernal and there I underclocked the kernal CPU by 25% (75% working) and optimized its GPU. This has dramatically improved the thermals and battery performance. Idle temp of the phone drops to 25C regularly. For the past one day, it has not reached 37C when doing routine browsing, calling and texting etc. The temp jumped to 40C during HD video playback, and once to 41C while playing angry birds. During quick charging at high ambient temp, it touched 44C once. Normally with the Mi quick wireless charger (80W), the temp variates between 40-43C.
Im yet to notice the anticipated drop in performance of the phone. For routine games and HD video playback, 75% performance of this beast is enough so far. It is as smooth as it is supposed to be.

According to my daily use of the phone, I do not need the full processor power. Seventy-five percent power is enough for that. For some long tasks, such as reading a lengthy pdf or google maps on a road trip, even 50% CPU power may be enough, granting enhanced battery performance and heat management. For the most intensive tasks, I can restore it to its original might (or even overclock it for that matter) just by toggling a switch, if that shall be desired. Options are good to have. A software fix and aggressive management of heat officially by Xiaomi, the point here by OP, will be welcomed of course.

actually a snap865 is really really fast and more then capable of running everything except gamming in comparison, and if you don't game high 3d games then you don't need the full power of the snap888 which is 25% faster.
I actually paid 850€ for mostly the camera and the media comfort, so i have to agree with hellodrsoul, if your main goal is have a phone for this purposed(no hardcore gaming) then capping it is a good thing,
also yeah Xiaomi is lacking in the optimization department.

Yes, it generally is smart enough but it is overheating for some people. There, one has to intervene...

You are right. There are no custom kernals available yet. But the FKM has the option to underclock the CPU and GPU and for me it works flawlessly.
