Decided For the Pixel 4 - vs all the others (Samsung, Apple, and etc) - Google Pixel 4 Guides, News, & Discussion

I am very excited. I really think it's a special phone, at least from a first glance. The phones that Samsung, Apple, LG, and others put out year after year are all.. carbon copies of one another. I always choose an outsider if I have the option for anything outside of the mainstream - you know, especially if everyone has it.
I had HTC m8 when Samsung ruled Android all alone. Than I opted for OnePlus when I broke my HTC.. because, why not right? Cheap, and as good as the twice as expensive ones.
Anyway!!
That was probably the main reason I decided to go with Pixel. On top of guarantee of getting new Android OS probably before anyone else, I also like the lack of a company skin, and bloatware. I mean root does take care of that but you shouldn't need to root to get rid of apps from a device that you OWN.
When I get it, hoping the order process goes without a hitch, I will write my first impressions here.

I didn't spend much time on the forum but from a few reviews I read.. it seems pretty mixed. Some hate it, others love it. Care to enlighten me, please?
Greatly appreciate any effort to that question..

The sound quality will blow you away.
Phone calls are clear and crisp, no complaints, people can hear me great too.
Small but pleasant surprises:
The vibrating motor has an interesting kick to it. It's hard to ignore.. (if you've used phones set to vibrate and still missed calls you didn't notice you'd understand what I mean)
I'm coming from a P30, so battery life in comparison is certainly an issue (or at least precieved to be an issue.)
To counteract this I ordered an iotie wireless charger for the car.
Face unlock: yes we all heard its bad, cause it doesn't require "attention" to unlock.
I don't have trust issues or major security requirements. However....
When you put this in the car holder... If it catches a glimpse of your face for even a second... The screen unlocks and stays open (very annoying) also if you have the screen off and it somehow gets a glimpse of your face... Screen unlocked... Now your fingers are doing all sorts of things on the phone that you don't want to happen.
Having said that.. We all know google will patch in the "attention" feature for face unlock. I'm not happy about the delay... But I can certainly wait.
Bottom line, could it have been better... Absolutely.... Do I have any regrets? No.
I'm very happy with my purchase. And I've had it since the 26th of October. So literally 1 week.
I love having a comparable screen to iPhone, gestures, and stock android. And the camera is better than I need it to be. (yup not a pro phone cam user.. I mostly take pics of my pets or business cards or important notes..) for anything else I have a dslr.
This is highly subjective... So I hope you'll be happy with it. And if not.. That's fine... Just return or sell and go with something that makes you happy =)

Very quickly, I am absolutely happy with my Pixel.
Face unlock, I really do think this is a storm in a tea cup. If your life leads you to worry about people sneaking in to your bedroom and presenting your phone to your face whilst you sleep... You have much more serious issue to deal with than the pixel's biometric supposed shortcomings.
More annoying is that it doesn't work with all those apps that I just got used to working with my fingerprint.
Don't understand about it opening when it catches sight of your face instantly? Mine doesn't, I have to press the power button before it activates? Probably something I've misunderstood. (Edit - I get it now actually. Soli wakes the phone up and then your face unlocks it. Doesn't seem to happen that often unintentionally though)
It does just work 100% of the time (so far at least) really, really quickly.
The battery. It is 19:05 here, the phone was charged up yesterday, I left it off the power overnight, to see how it would fare (it lost 8%) and I'm on 33%. I charged it fit approx 10 minutes in car earlier.
It could be better, but really it doesn't impact anywhere near as much as done would have you think.
The camera is simply brilliant.
Scrolling around is super smooth. Noticeably smoother than my old Huawei P20 Pro. To use some other company's tag line - it just works.

I agree with everybody else in that it does have it's shortcomings but overall I love the phone. I mainly like it because of the size. It just feels so much more comfortable in the hand vs larger form factor phones like the 4 XL. It's also a very unique phone in that it is the only small form factor phone with a 90hz display right now, every other phone that has a 90hz display is on the larger side.
Battery life is relatively bad compared to other phones, I'm getting about 4 hours of screen on time with light-medium usage, which includes youtube videos and scrolling through social media. It's not much of an issue for me though because I always charge my phone in my car and I always carry a portable charger with me.
I just can't get over that 90hz display, it's so smooth.

I don't agree putting LG with Samsung and Apple. In fac I can tell you that carbon copy is Apple and Pixel when it comes to main camera sensor module. They both share an Sony imx363 but assembled and with lenses from LG Innotek . So who's copying who? Apple has f1.8, pixel f1. 7 and lg the more advanced f1. 5 since lg v40 ThinQ. That's 1 year before.
Regarding photovideography my V50 kills both the iPhone and the pixel.

Regarding sound quality, saying the pixel has sound quality without reffering to the best in class... Quad dac, LDAC, dtsx, hardware MQA, 32 bit audio processor and so on...

Design?
Just take a look at the V50 Korean model. Under glass most advanced and best on the planet triple camera system. LG has done it. Pixel apple and Samsung are dreaming.

LG's flagship devices are meh at best.
Camera? Can only take average at best in detail. f1.5 means nothing if image processing is mediocre.
Under glass camera? LG wasn't the first to do that and they can only do so because they are using smaller camera sensors (aka. for midrange)
Design? This is subjective. LG phones are always a clone of Samsung but look plain and boring.
There is no real character in their phones. Let's not talk about LG's hideous notch because it's not even funny to begin with.
Sound quality? They should thank HTC for being bankrupt, else, HTC will continue to dominate this space.
Videography? I am not a fan of iPhone but everyone will agree that they rule this piece even without pro mode.

Yeah, right. I'm telling you. LG V50 kills everything in both photos and videos.
Regarding design:

How about this? Got it since 04 December.
I've heard there are pixel 4 xl out there with like September and October security patch.
Intresting how times changes...
Regarding the camera aspect don't forget that LG Innotek makes them both for iPhone and Pixel. No way iPhone is taking better videos than V50. They're dreaming.

Ah. I forgot to mention I'm getting 10-12 hours SOT with my V50 4000mah.

Hey all
Lets take another look at the LG G Watch R, this time put it up against the Moto 360. Its still unsure on exactly which processor will be used in the Moto 360. There are rumors of it touting a Texas instruments chipset, but with that company bowing out of the market some time ago, the suggestion it may well run the same Snapdragon 400 chipset as the G watch R may well be true. For the purpose of this comparison, we will go with the Snapdragon 400, i will update when further info comes in:good: With both devices taking the same circular approach and similar hardware, the decision may not be so easy.
Display Size:
Just looking at the display size, the Moto 360 has the edge, with its 1.5" over the LG's 1.3"
Display ppi:
The LG has a superior resolution and a slightly smaller screen size resulting in a considerably higher ppi of ~277 PPI, over the Moto 360's ~205 pixel per inch ratio. How these numbers translate to use on a device worn on the wrist is yet to be seen, but clear winner is the LG.
Display Type:
The LG has a P-OLED display and Motorola sticking with the more traditional LCD technology. The P-OLED will result in the devices screen being far easier to read under direct sunlight, it also gives better contrast and color depth than the LCD. Winner, LG G Watch R.
Processor, RAM:
With both devices (possibly) packing the same chipset along with 512MB of RAM, this one is a draw.
Heart Rate Monitor:
Both devices feature a heart rate monitor, great for those of us who are active.
Water/Dust Resistance:
Both devices feature full IP67 certification. No worrying about your device while washing hands etc:victory:
With both devices being so close in terms of hardware, at this point its down to preference over design. The screen technology used could be the killer feature, as reading the screen in sunlight for me is a must for any smartwatch. Looking forward to hearing members thoughts on these two devices:good:
I will update this post as we get more info in:good:
Nice comparison, great work! Now I can't wait to get my hands on them!
Am definitely aiming for the lg g watch r, not only because of the P-OLED display but also because the full area of the display is used (Motorola couldn't do that because of the ports)

Because of the what? lol there are no "ports".
They did it because the display technology is in that spot. LG got around it by putting the display tech in the bezel (like most TVs and phones do).

No GPS in the LG?
And both heart rate monitors are practically unusable during e.g. running etc.

The moto doesnt have a GPS either, they just use the GPS in your phone via bluetooth.
As much as I love the 360, and as much as I keep trying to ignore the black bar, I just cant. Every single time I finish surfing through a dozen 360 pix I look at one pic of the R and immediately fall in love. They say the measurement of beauty is symmetry, and that stupid lower bezel completely disrupts the symmetry of the device. While all LG may have done is camouflaged it, I think their decision is still best.
A good start. Please add to the comparison:
- Battery life
- storage size
- Full 360 display
- Ease to root and ease to unlock the bootloader
- weight
- light sensor
- number of speakers
I know some details may not yet be available.
I would have purchased a 360 yesterday if not for it's terrible battery life. Which is worse than the pre-release review stated.

1% per minute is obviously retarded, that would mean the watch is dead in less than 2 hours. These idiots need to quit averaging out usage since the battery drain is dynamic. CPU's throttle performance up/down on demand. If I drive around the city with the pedal to the metal my car will get 4mpg, does that mean I can therefore only drive 60 miles on a tank of gas?

And those same 3 sites are the biggest offenders pushing out this battery life garbage. The Verge and WSJ started this nonsense. I'll read the reviews of REAL people who are actually using it in REAL WORLD conditions, of which most are saying the battery life is either acceptable or better than expected.

I've read through plenty of posts in that thread and can't agree with your blanket assessment. Especially given usage is key and I know what I need. It's your money and I'm happy with any decision you make with it. I'll take the near 30% larger battery and true 360 display, in a slightly smaller watch face.
Some other things to include in the comparison OP, port type and sensors.

I'm just saying the verge/WSJ reviews are patently false. There is no reasonable condition in which the watch will ever get less than 12 hours of life without intentionally going out of your way to drain it to death, and as a result they have started this **** storm of paranoia about battery life. Every youtube comment now talks about poor battery life because they saw someone else talking about poor battery life who got it from a forum post on another site that all invariably end up leading back to those 2 damn articles that came out at the same time. The problem is the verge/wsj have such high production value that people took their reviews as the gospel, thinking there's no way such a professional organization could completely botch a review for a product so badly.
When you watch these reviewers attempt to nagivate android wear it's clear they have no idea how the tile system or notification mirroring works. They had no business even touching these devices. It'll take weeks of homebrew review videos to surface online correcting their egregious errors before peoples faith in the device returns to normal.
More than 2, and they can't all be lying when it comes to the Moto 360 having battery life issues. It's too consistent a complaint and in forum threads there are complaints from the early adopters too. Yet more independent reviews, which again cite battery life issues:
http://mashable.com/2014/09/06/motorola-moto-360-review/
http://www.cnet.com/products/motorola-moto-360/
Motorola says 1 day of use. While the LG G Watch R with almost 30% more battery and a smaller screen is claimed to reach 1 - 2 days of use by LG. For some of us, due to our level of use. We never see the claimed battery life for any device and must consider a fraction of what is claimed. And for me, it's repeatedly confirmed.
It's very user dependent, but obvious I need to stir clear of the Moto 360 and consider the LG G Watch R. For those with less a need, I'm sure they'll enjoy the Moto 360.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Here's an article that also does a "vs" comparison in similar fashion. It just covers a some more areas.
And this review of the Moto 360 does a true apples to apples test of its battery life, versus other available Android Wear devices, see page 2. The LG G Watch R is not included, since not yet available.
thanks for posting the link to the arstechnica article, just wanted to post that one myself
in addition, some more about the limited SoC of the Moto 360:
https://plus.google.com/+RonAmadeo/posts/C3rdRdEme9o
combining the 4 (!) year old SoC with a pretty small battery, why should it be hard to imagine that the battery would hold up all that good?
I was really hyped to get the Moto 360, but not anymore
still think it looks better than the LG G Watch R, but it won't hold up to my expectations, especially because i really want the ambient mode / screen always on (which btw looks great on the R: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFO5tCkI__w&feature=player_detailpage#t=134)

Whatever it is, it can't hang with any other Android Wear Smart Watch. But the battery size has become a point of debate. Moto has released their excuse explanation. But some claim it's even less than 300mAh.

Anyone Else Disappointed with Gear Image Quality?

Having spent way too many hours trying to perfect my own DIY HMD, I thought I'd found the solution: I could just buy a Note 4, buy a Gear, and be done with it ( at least until the Rift is released).
Got my Gear today, and ... I can't get over how poor the image quality is. It's not the Note 4 screen, which is fine, it's the lenses on the Gear. When I look at a screen capture on my HMD (using the Note 4 as a screen), and then look at it on the Gear, the same image seems drastically different: zoomed in, with pixels the size of baseballs drowning out all sense of immersion. I tried a 1080p video on the Oculus Theater ... it was so pixelated it reminded me of watching videos on my old psp ...
In every other respect the Gear beats my DIY HMD hands down, but in this one--I would argue very important area--it absolutely does not.
Am I the only one who had this experience?
I agree with you that the image quality is still not good enough to replace mediums like a TV or monitor. This is for sure one reason why it will not find mass adoption right now. You must understand that this are really early days of consumer VR now and until today there is no "real" consumer ready HMD on the market.
ad. Gear VR lenses:
They really could have used better optics but then the price would be not "consumer friendly" then - also the DK2 lenses are crap in my opinion but it seems the market for good vr optics also just have been awaken.
I remember my first VR experience was with a homemade cardboard-design HMD using good lenses from high grade binoculars. They were heavy (as glass made) and the achieved FOV was not really great but it was crystal clear and nearly zero SDE. When i got my DK2 i was really disappointed to see this big pixel party! But realizing what a great FOV and the right software can achieve (a kind of presence) i knew we have to go for great FOV if VR should be a new medium and not only a image/movie viewer.
Thanks for the detailed response!
I think Samsung/Oculus tipped the balance WAY too far toward FOV at the expense of SDE.

Personally I prefer a larger FOV, and think you get the best experience with the foams removed (only have some on my nose). Would never choose a smaller FOV just for slightly less of a SDE as that would totally kill the immersion for me. Hoping for 4K full RGB screens in two years time.
Agree with you
I for one absolutely agree with you. got mine 2 days ago and yeah the experience is nice but the image quality is fuzzy or blurry, it would be nice if someone can mod a lens on to the Gear VR to sharpen the quality.
my question: is this issue addressed in the upcoming drift in 2016?

To be very very honest, Im not disappointed about it at all. The tech is really young, the Note4 was only compatible with the innovator and development editions of the hardware. I cant comment on the quality improvement between the devices. But with a Note5 and a consumer version, Im getting exactly what I thought id be getting. Very bleeding edge technology that hasn't even gotten off the runway but is far ahead than anything else on the consumer market today.
Remember this: 100$ ..................... if you want something better, the next step is 600$ and only in march.
Also, this is technically not even an official 1st gen device. It's a slightly better draft than the slightly better draft of the previous editions. I think oculus and samsung partnered to use Galaxy users as a sort of Beta test. This technology obviously is the future, but as of now, its still a foetus. I have a Note 5, one of the most powerful smartphones in the world, and yet, the VR uses 98% of the phones performance. The battery drains within 1h practically and it generates so much heat it would probably keep your coffee warm in winter.
I bought one of the best rated VR headsets on amazon as a gift for my nephew, it cost me half of what my GearVR cost me, and it doesnt even come close to offer what Samsung does. The ONLY thing it does better, it it has almost no light leak. Thats also the only thing i can ***** about the GearVR, i would have liked a black background around lenses and thicker padding around face, or at least, an extra strip of padding we can patch the light leaks (also a carrying bag would have been nice even if it was cheap).
This GearVR sould have been called the "Early Bird Edition". We all are early adopters, I can tell you one thing, for 100$, I have impressed 100% of the people that put the headset on, and not only impressed, amazed. And 3 weeks later, i'm still being impressed by the new thing I find I can do, explore or play.
As for the pixels, it would take an 8K screen 3 inches from our face to not see them. I didnt know this until recently when the app froze on me but out the the entire screen realestate, only a very small portion is used for a majority of content. So yeah, that 1080p content you are watching, not exactly trueHD

I might have made it a bit small, but not by much.
P.S. Not a big fan of the super mega studio adult films, but they have actually some of the highest quality videos out there, there are some samples floating around, its quite impressive.
Over the moon with mine, can watch full length movies with ease Tonto being one of them, battery no problem here with an s6 edge plus, but use mine on wifi only usually, and I have facebook blather and g+ disabled, and nothing polling ,email etc. all on manual , usually use unit at 4 to 5 on its brightness slide ,not aware of any light leak in my experience.
Everyone without exception who has tried it is blown away, I own my favourite phone anyway and then this appears, an accessory for $99 with this level of experience, if you are fortunate to be able to afford it without neglecting your life and dependants needs.......who wouldn't . If apple had released this exact same item with their logo ,the media would have eaten it alive with cream and the public would too, and, when they do, they will, we all
know this is in its infancy, but its a great place to be, the next advance in screen resolution will nail it, when your looking at a 25 foot screen with the clarity of a samsung big tv quality ,you, entertainment wise, have arrived.
plus, keep em like new guys, when it comes time to upgrade, this will practically sell your phone for you...maybe. lol.
Love mine too. Have had it since the day after Thanksgiving, and still using it a lot daily. There is a "screen door effect" to it, but the resolution is still clear and bright on movies. I put on some 3D movies last week, and they look great, and are easy to watch. Games like Herobound and Gunjack are also stunning and extremely fun with a controller to play. Samsung Internet browser is great, but don't count on all content to be great quality. There are some good 3D video samples on Youtube through the browser though. Also just looked through some Experiences in the Oculus Video app tonight, like going to the Electric Daisy Carnival. Again, quality of that video not great, but still a fun experience to see what it would be like to be there.
SDE is overpowering and both sides of the screen out of focus - in my experience. Its a cool toy but nothing I would use for any length of time. This is with the Note 5.
That being said, the tech should probably be good in a year or so.

So happy

A troll? Everything I have said is true...
Battery is phenomenal, yes.
Cameras could be better, but they aren't complete garbage.
If you're having a heat issue, mess with your kernel settings.
The phone is far from a bad one, despite not being perfect.

Can't agree more. Coming from s6e+ and S7( used for a month) Im using mine since 31.02.2017; performance is good, cameras as you said could be better. No heating issue abnormally. I simply love this device and never thought about jumping to S8+. People reporting weird issues which makes me think that those bought a knockoff mi mix or a mi max lol. If Mi mix 2 comes with no bottom chin; I will jump on it without thinking twice otherwise I'll be using this for years.
Mi MIX
7.5.4 Épic
Biggest troll ever, the Mi Mix is a well balanced phone with an AMAZING camera, only people like yourself do not know how to use a camera.
Think it's as easy as point and shoot?? When adjusting settings and taking photos manually, I must say the Mi Mix is one of the BEST cameras I have seen.
Many people simply think that by simply pointing and shooting you get amazing results. Wrong. With some knowledge of photography and using manual settings, the Mi Mix is capable of amazing photos.
Refer to this link and PLEASE tell me what is so bad about the camera. I took these myself with no adjustment or editing apart from cropping.

What a cry baby, I had it since Xmas best phone I ever had. Not every phone is perfect. I've never had any heat ensues, the camera is the weakest point aside from the ceramic body.

Excellent front camera, never had any overheating or poor performance.
I could give you a $5000 camera with a $2000 lens but someone like yourself will still get $hitty images yet blame it on the camera. Go and learn photography. You simply expect to point and shoot to get good images. Only YOU are the $hitty photographer, not the phone.
Do yourself a favour and learn how to use a camera. Take a photography course instead of slagging off the camera and speaking like a complete amateur.
PLEASE tell me what is so bad about the camera?? What is so bad with these sample pictures??

Ps. The two above images were even taken with poor lighting especially the watch which was taken at 40 shutter speed. You are probably thinking what that even means...
Are you serious? one of the best camera? whoooo such fan boys you are !
Poor details, and most of the times, lot of noises. So nothing to do about skill here...

Ever heard of shooting manually and using iso 100?
Please tell me how the above images are noisy and lack in detail??
You are a poor photographer, simple as that.
Blame yourself and not the hardware. Admit you know nothing about photography.
I could give someone such as yourself something like a Galaxy S8 and photos taken by myself with the Mi Mix will come out far better than yours taken by the S8.
You might be thinking how? It's not just the hardware, it's the photographer.
Most pictures I've seen from other people are crap, blurred and have poor lighting. Yet it is not the fault of the phone, it's the lousy photographer.
It's very clear you know nothing about photography, not even the basics...
Yet you are very quick to blame the Mi Mix for taking poor pictures.
I say again, how in any way are the above shots noisy and lack in detail? Enlighten me and support your statement. Don't just say the camera is s**t when clearly it is you who is an ignorant 15 year old boy who simply does not know how to use a camera and know nothing about the settings and what they mean.

Where did you seen that I wanted to have the biggest antutu score?
I have just explained that I don't understand why, compared to other smartphones wich have the SD821, it have the worst score on antutu. I don't care about getting 100000000 on antutu. It's just that the low score compared to other smartphone show how bad the Mi Mix was made. And throttle as hell.

Honor has recently been putting out some great new phones. Their budget lineup currently consists of the Honor 7X and the Honor 9 Lite. The Honor 7X is one of our favorite budget phones right now, and has even become the best selling phone in the Amazon unlocked phones category. The Honor 9 Lite has just recently launched in India and is quickly gaining traction due to its super low price.
If you own either of these phones, this is your chance to win a Google Home Mini. Leave a short review in the comments of this article, detailing what your thoughts are on your phone so far. Talk about the camera, performance, battery life, display quality, or anything that you feel is noteworthy.
Honor listens closely to the XDA community and takes your opinions seriously, so now is your chance to tell them what you think. We will pick one lucky reviewer to win a Google Home Mini!
A beauty behold !
It's been eight days I BOUGHT it
USED it for alot of time until now.
COLOR is Midnight Black (personally wanted this, although other colors were tempting too)
Things that necessarily require mentions:
Network Bands (4g,3g,2g)
The network strength is perfectly fine, the signal doesn't fool. It correctly takes the receptivity to the exact extent needed, you wont loose any even in remote areas. If an iphone user has a network strength like one bit in his notification bar, you too are having surely. So, here network isn't a problem with this phone.
The Weight
In today world, we could be of carrying any weights, but when it comes to the phones, the weight really matters. If it's above 180g, boy, take it in written, so much pain in hand, soo much when talking calls, soo much in holding it straight infront. Soo much in pocket too. This phone instead is only 149g, which is excellently lightweight. The utmost benefit would be for people who waited for a phone which had good specs and stands equal to others of its range aswell. For the lightweight phones preferring people, finally the wait is over
Body Built
A strong phone doesnt mean an awesome phone. A weak phone doesnt mean poor quality. Firstly, one should know there is no such thing like strong or weak in phones of major brands. It is purely specs that decide to the needs of people and make phones accordingly. This phone has Severely flaunting looks. Totally an eye catcher. The glass back is soo beautiful & makes you want to look at it rather than looking at the screen most of the time
Display Screen
The 18:9 ratio is more than you can ask for in this phone. I mean, you are getting a 428ppi screen, what more do you want expect that huge clarity and detail in this price range and phone screen This looks more crisp than the any other budget phones, i guarantee you baby, its 428ppi, you donno how good the screen gets when its 428. Most of the phones were 403ppi and looked already good enough. This is much better now.
Platform
You are not in line, like before a person or after a person. You are right next to each other, like holding hands. Which means, you are in such a thing called " Happiness comes in all sizes and quantities :victory:." Because, its HiSilicon Kirin 659 in all the phones of the honor budget class range. Which would benefit you highly in performing without causing any complexities. Games are good to play, if one knows how to tweak better, then it's kickass
Memory
4GB and 64GB, is more than enough and perfect. You wont require more for this processor and budget.
Camera
This is the core purpose of this phone. Damn, the photos are soo good, sooooo good that you will for the first time find yourself have a true "Wow" reaction on your face when you snap them. Selfies are great aswell. People mentioned alot in the comments session in major sellers websites that the nighttime shots are horrible in the rear camera. You should know one thing, you aren't carrying a DSLR or HandyCAM, its your phone. its primary utility was to communicate. You are wrong to expect it to do well in a lowlight location. Not even a DSLR with a flash can be capable of better picture quality. Even professionals use heavy lights for the good feel in a photo when movies are made. So, a phone you are expecting to do this night capable photography job is totally a myth. Think once, there is no point of expecting some heavy landscape photography over night. Even James Cameron would shoot his film in the day with soo expensive cameras. If still you arent happy then when it's night time you want to snap something, its not phone you require, that's surveillance camera you need to carry with yourself having night vision lens
Sound
That's loud. You will be totally fine with it. Just as loud as it can fit in there. Music has clarity and crispness, bass isn't an element for music through speakers, earphones does the job well if someone needed bass.
Software
The Android 8.0 is soo well designed, it would understand your interests. Even would show you few that you wouldn't have imagined to find them in phone. There are all the modifications possibly existing in every popular custom ROM readily available in this honor phone stock ROM itself. The settings hold various toggles to change according to your liking. Below they are listed...
Huawei ID It takes care of backing up all the contacts, messages, calender and necessary stuff to the cloud provided by Huawei.
Wireless & Networks Lte, VoLTE configurations can be modified, data usage with specific networked apps is added advantage.
Apps & Notifications Apps to uninstall or disable, enable is available. Default apps, App twin & notification mods such as network meter, etc are here too.
Battery setting In this option, there is a power saving mode that can give you more than 4days standby if stuck to only few basic utilities with the phone.
Display setting Eye Comfort which can exchange color of screen to cool, warm feel. Screen resolution modification which is only in honor that enables to reduce screen density which can result in great power save.
Storage setting You get around 52GB free out of 64GB internal space. The RAM Management is nice too. There is always somehow 2.4GB RAM remaning in 4GB available though around 13apps are in the multitasking window. The software of honor does the RAM allocation very well for tasks processing.
Security & Privacy Fingerprints soo fast (0.25sec), file safe to hide files, App lock, Screen Pinning.
Smart Assistance setting Double tap to wake screen or lock screen.
System setting inside here, there are data transfer, backup & restore, reset, update, etc.
Themes These look soo beautiful and give a punchy look to the phone.
The Magazine Lockscreen This is the best part of the phone when you unlock, the pictures are soo beautiful that just by looking at them, your mind strikes at wow which really is relaxing and refreshing all the time you want them.
Navigation Buttons the onscreen buttons can be exchanged places from right to left which is way convenient for southpaw's.
Battery & Power Consumption
The moderate usage of phone can last a whole day, from 100% in the morning, you can use the phone till next day until same time u charged if you are only on 4g data usage and checking messages, attending calls, by then your battery will be around 10%. In the night, the percentage of drop in non usage is only 2% which is super less. The charging time is alot, but there's something honor's very concerned about, it takes alot of time to charge because, the module of charge input itself is designed by honor in such a way it takes charge slowly (Not to mistake as snail slow) to not spoil the battery life. Hence, this doesn't heat up phone very much. It keeps cool and does its job CooL without messing around. It takes 2hrs15min for full charge. This is same with many mobiles, almost 2hr15min is common with most mobiles.
Wifi, bluetooth, GPS, OTG are all working flawlessly too.
Frankly speaking, cost is soo low, quality we get is really good, more than pleasing for the price we pay for.
Mentions that need to be considered:
I know the camera in our phone is enough capable to get the exact software enhancements i find in HonorV10 Camera app. I clearly see honor is trying to limit these enhancements for the sake people would fall dull that they invested double the price and got exactly the same software loaded in half priced model (which is ours). Sure, many people might question this out. But, Please, middle class people require somebody to bother them. It's us who suffer the loss or gain equally and still keep calm without having no other choices rather than to convince ourselves we cant get more, nobody cares. The rich complain, they sue, you bother them. We request, we ask things soo much, we are many & loud but unheard (-_-) , you have established soo well in our country market this time, the what we have lost (beauty, power, feel ) in xiaomi phones, we found in yours. Your phones made us feel alive. I felt soo good looking at my Honor 9 Lite, it was worth all the effort you put on. I didnt even buy a Xiaomi phone for myself until date, i felt like us were being played by that company. It didnt feel good. They sold cheap stuff with good software tweaks. It was Hugo Barra who designed software, only because of this Xiaomi phones were a hit. You lagged at it alot in the past until Honor 6X. I never bought any Xiaomi device, i loved the Honor 4x, but found there were no updates. But this time you came superawesome into the market, your software is wayyy better than Xiaomi in looks and feel, all that it finally require is bug fixes, proper tweaks to utilize the whole capacity of the hardware, you do everything from scratch and created us this antique designed masterpiece phones. You should be proud. All you require is massive tweaking in the software, thats all. The processor's are superb, the screen buttersmooth, sound clear crisp and loud. Its the tweaking that's missing. I really wish honor this time you keep alot of effort in giving us customers in the country who bought your phones a huge happy smile. Ask how?? Here's how, we like gifts, gift us like 2 or 3days before festivals an OTA update that solves all the bug issues in our honor phones and then look at the news, scroll down, check the comments session. You would be very well liked. We'd then even feel honored to have had you bothering us and all together. Straight outta heart, we would be TRULY overjoyed that you did care for us this time on.
Dear Honor,
The world is a happy place for as long you, atleast hereafter consider to help us better .
It's the best you can get for the price with some small compromises
Let's start with not so good stuff before we get on to the great stuff!
I've got the 3GB variant and Midnight Black Color, I'm using it now for about 23 days.
Memory Management - Well the RAM/Memory management on this device is very aggressive, Here's how I was watching some dope stuff on YouTube and few Minutes in and I got a call and was talking for about 15 - 20 Mins and after the call ended, I was hoping the youtube app will be in the same state I left it! But, no The app was closed completely and I had to relaunch the app again, and also if you are running music in the background you get this stupid notification saying the app is running in the background and drains battery which can annoy anyone!
Hopefully, they will fix these in future software updates.
And (Not sure whether it's the Memory management or the app's problem), I'm running NOVA Launcher as default After 2 or 3 days, it automatically switched back to the default Launcher, well this only happened twice and after that, I didn't face this problem anymore, I thought it was worth mentioning.
Camera - Well the only thing that I felt weird was with the rear camera when I switched to Portrait mode or Wide Aperture mode It Changed the Resolution to 8MP, but the same with the front camera it was 13MP and there is no option to switch to 13MP, and maybe that's why most of the Tech YouTubers say the front cam of this device is good then the rear.
And also I wish it had EIS hopefully, in future software update we will get it!
It would really help the video quality!
Well, that's the things that annoyed me the most, now let's get to the good stuff!
Design and Build Quality - Well, you might have heard a lot about this, but the device screams Premium, They have nailed the design with this device, it's absolutely gorgeous and It's really light to hold tho, some people may like it, and people like me may want a heavy device (Personal preference).
OS and UI - Well it's really smooth didn't have any lag issues or any of such kind, it's snappy and didn't face any heating issues or so, the only thing is RAM management which I mentioned it earlier and apart from that, it's really good.
Battery and charging speed - I could easily get through a day, I have no complaints about the battery it's really good and I'm happy with it. From 20% to 100% the charging time it took was somewhere around 1hr 15 mins to 1hr 40mins, which is reasonable for a 3000mAh battery, it doesn't support fast charging but I don't think that's an issue as I can get a day's worth of battery and I have no complaints about it, But I did wish it had a Type - C port, it's fine not a big issues but it could've had a Type - C
Speaker and Headphone output - The speaker is loud and clear, there is no Distortion at full volume, there is a bit bass which you can feel and its' good but a finger can cover it and the whole sound can be lost, that's the only issue and that's the issue with all mono down facing speaker.
And for the headphone output, I don't own a premium headset, I have a cheap one and it worked fine with it, it was loud and clear.
Call and Network - Call quality was really good, No issues Tried with Jio, Vodafone and BSNL didn't face any issues, the receiver was able to hear me clear and loud and the data was also at a good speed and with 4G it didn't affect the battery much as I thought it would, Wifi Bridge is one of the really cool features and it works really good.
and Finally
Camera - Well I've already told the problem I faced apart from that I don't have any issues,
It focuses really fast and also takes photos really fast, it's super snappy! I really loved the quality of images that I got in this price segment.
The Pro Photo and Pro Video mode are really good if you know to use them well, There are several other modes The food mode is also good and Timelapse is awesome.
Well, the front cam in portrait mode does fail sometimes to recognize people's face if there are more than 2 persons in the shot, it just happens sometimes and not every time. And I wish it had a Slo-Mo Mode tho.
The images are of really good quality tho, good enough to post on Social Networking sites.
Conclusion - I think it worth the money I paid, It does have some minor issues which can be fixed via Software Update apart from that it's a really good device and I'm Lovin it.
PS - I had actually added images and since I'm a new member XDA doesn't allow new users to post links.
Not very impressed with the Honor 9 Lite.
I did online research and read lots of review on the Honor 9 Lite.
What convinced me was a comparison some reviewer did with his current daily driver, a 1+3t, and was, as he put it, 'pleasantly surprised'. Since my current daily driver is also a 1+3t I relented and bought one, the 3+32GB version.
After using the Honor 9 Lite I don't think it comes anywhere close to a 1+3t. Now I appreciate and understand that it is cheaper than my 1+3t (even at its current value) but I'm not very impressed, especially with the way EMUI 8 completely rapes Android stock ! I knew this going in but never realised to what extent EMUI restrict customisation.
Let me give examples.
1. First thing I always do with every phone i buy is disabled all apps I don't need/use. Some of the apps on the Honor 9 Lite are cooked in and without root cannot be disables, frozen or removed; e.g. Files, Huawei Mobile Service, Themes.
2. Next thing is to replace any homelauncher with my favourite 'Nova'. Well as soon as you do this on the 9Lite you get a pop-up message stating something like 'changing home launcher uses more battery'...What ? Anyway you can force it through and then just change the default home launcher to Nova. Then some of the EMUI widgets, like weather, don't work anymore. That's ok, I expected that, what I did not expect is for it to show up as available but when you try to add it to your homescreen you get a FC and Huawei launcher is back, in effect removing your default launcher you just set.
3. Huawei badges also obviously don't work under Nova; again as expected.
4. Next I fired up Chronus widget so i can get a replacement for the now non-working Huawei weather service (which at least you can disable). Chronus now does not update the alarm. So you set an alarm in clock but Chronus does not pick up the changee unless you go into chronus change something and save it. This was even after i loaded up Google clock and set alarm through that.
All the above works flawlessly in my Oreo based 1+3t.
5. Lag..yes it is a lot worse than my 1+3t, now like i said because of the price difference i did not expect the Kirin659 to be on par with the Snapdragon 821 but the lag difference was much more noticable on the Honor9 lite than i expected.
6. Since Nova was basically non functional I had to return to Huawei's own launcher.
7. No way of hiding status bar. By the way I also tried play store apps, like GMD Full Screen, but it did not work properly.
8. Battery life is one day on normal use.
9. Cameras are acceptable but no better than my single camera 1+3t.
Conclusion:
Not impresssed, it looks great, weight is spot on for me, size is also great so is the screen brightness, but everything else is nothing special and that EMUI8 man, it just restricts you from most customisation which is the reason we all love android. If i wanted restrictions i would have gone for an iphone.
Why should i have to unlock BL and root to be able to do simple things like use full immersive mode. I'd like to keep android pay functioning so don't want to unlock, root and battle with magidisk to hide root. I just want control back of my phone.
Anyway, thought i would put this together outlining my experience with the Honor 9Lite, hopefully yours will be better and find acceptable.
Well, I bought this device as my ex-device was quite old enough(I was using grand 2 as my daily driver).Next, when I was searching for new devices,I was looking for a device which is better in all aspects(camera, looks, sound, performance, signal quality) and also in a moderate price. Then I stumbled across Honor 9 Lite.It was the old phone in my budget range which was able to cater to my demands. It looks gorgeous as ever. The glass body, its colour (I got the Sapphire blue one) and its modern looks with minimal borders made me order the phone without even checking for other details(I already knew it supports 4G and fingerprint sensor) .When I got the phone,I found that it is not too heavy but is indeed slippery due to glossy back,so I applied the cover to increase friction and to prevent falling .
These are the following pros and cons of the phone I found:-
PROS
1.Camera->Both the front and back cameras are awesome and can even capture good amount of detail even in low light condition.Maybe the 4 cameras(2 in pairs does the trick)
2.Android OS->Being latest is the best. This device packs with Android Oreo which many 2017 flagships like S8(they got it but Samsung removed the OTA update) haven't recieved properly
3.Processor->I haven't heard about this processor's name earlier but was shocked by its insane frequency(greater than 2 Ghz) so I decided to do an Antutu benchmark and found that this processor's performance is comparable with Snapdragon 625.
4.Display->Display is awesome.Nothing to say about it
5.Battery->Battery life is a bit-tad low (It lasts 9 hrs for me),so I need to charge atleast once a day.No fast charging support and no USB C was a dissappointment
6.Storage and Ram management-Plenty of Ram(3 GBs) and storage(around 22 GBs),so no complaints there

Question Cameras in low light are really bad

Smudged detail, really not great. I had the find x5 pro for a while before returning it and there really is no comparison. Quite disappointed.

Really not sure about keeping the phone. On one hand I actually like the fake OxygenOS basically ColorOS. The phone software feels very very polished relative to other androids. Almost like a non buggy MIUI. But the PWM flicker is pretty bad.
Cameras seem fine in my limited testing. Although OnePlus has always taken a couple months to fix their cameras.
I've taken some great pics so far...as with any phone the situation sometimes requires you to alter some settings, that's what pro modes for.
This phone will come good, the hardwares just too good to not exploit with some good ROMs.
I was hesitant at first comparing it to my 8 pro but I'm so in now..

Totally agree!
in good light the camera is fine, it is medium to low light where I am seeing a drop off vs say the S22 or Pixel. For example seems pretty bad for smudging fur detail on pets.

Have you tried the other settings in manual mode ?
As a point and shoot it'll get better but if you expect the world without any work it's just not going to happen mate. Not Vs an S22. I mean that's an expensive phone, it should be better, the pixel is using the base software and it's Google again it should be better..
That being said I'm positive I can get better than any point and shoot camera phone with this phone
This camera has a lot of features, settings, and cool picture possibilities....Hasselblad ftw
What I have learnt from experience with phones is to now buy it for the camera , I will just get one mirror less camera which will last longer than any camera phones for a long time
I think it is only in comparison to the competition that it falls short. My torture test for any new phone is photos of our cats indoors and I am seeing more smudging and a less clwean image than the Pixel of S22 Ultra offers and yes I have owned both and still actually have the S22U.

Try some different settings. Smudges may occur due to HDR being on and a slight movement, could just be the software that OnePlus has made. It could just need a few updates which I'm sure may occur.
ISO could be too high too.
Use pro mode, set the shutter speed as low as possible Vs an ISO of 200-800, should help...find the sweet spot depending on the light you have.. it's manual but honestly my pics come out better when I have control. My DSLR I'd never let the camera choose for me..
There was a poll on phonearena with blind camera test (users were asked to vote for best picture of same scene clicked by S22, iPhone13 Pro, OP 10 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro without knowing which phone clicked which picture)... OP sucked major balls and came in last
I got my OP10 Pro today...anyway I did not buy it for camera

Smudged detail, really not great. I had the find x5 pro for a while before returning it and there really is no comparison. Quite disappointed.

Yeah, sometimes it is bad if there is very low light OnePlus should give an update for this along with the security patch!

Again this is point and shoot.
Ask any actual photographer if they rely on automatic lens settings, the vast majority will say no they won't so why would you rely on it for your phone? They all have the capability yet we tend to believe some plum who's pointings and shooting? Makes no sense to me
I'm not saying that the results are incorrect as I've not used them phones, but relying on this test is testing one thing and that's the automatic settings chosen by the software on the phone.
That's it.
Give all these phones to a photographer and get them to use settings based on the scene they have Infront of them, then check the results, I think you'll see a different outcome
For the record I used to be a photographer for a living in a previous life. I almost always though just use my phone in auto mode as a point and shoot, have just never embraced manual mode (or even Av mode for that matter) on a phone.

I take a lot of astro photograph's, both with my DSLR / telescope and purpose built astro camera.. but also my phone.
I need to change some things when I take a night shot, especially of the sky.
I think if you give it a shot (no pun intended) you'll be surprised at the results.
it will take months before sensor potential is used at its fullest with Gcam, and everyone knows these have infinite issues with white balance etc for years, so those kind of flagships won't ever shoot close to what cheaper older flagships can already do after years of gcam configs development

I agree besides gcam, it's just unstable, things not working like wide angle, slow motion.
But for a point and shoot it's the simpler option.
I think Vs pro mode you'd get better on the stock app.
Defo agree on updates helping
oneplus explicitly stated they remove access to aux cameras in OOS12, no one pays flagship price for a point and shoot and nevermind what comes out at the end experience, u can do that on a 200$ Xiaomi and get 95% satisfaction for social media and casual browsing on large screens
