Matt side frame coating chips too easy? - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Hi people!
I got my Pixel 4 XL two weeks ago, basically the phone lives in my pocket nothing beside it. Never dropped or hit it anywhere. This morning I noticed a very small chip on the matt side frame on the top right corner. It is not a big chip, but I can see the bare metal under it. It is really annoying because as I mentioned I was really careful with the phone, I can't imagine what would have happened if I dropped it.
Is it normal? Anyone experienced the same issue?

I think someone else has a thread of a similar situation. I swap between 3 different cases all the time (One case is pretty tight) and my sides are just fine.

Yes mine has Matt paint coming off has been in case since day 1 took case off and the two bottom corners have worn off not happy at all and never once dropped my phone and the case I used is ringke case now I'm using Incipio case

I have multiple cases and swap multiple times a week and have no issues. Ranging from the otterbox to the Google fabric case.

Thanks for the input guys,
The issue is that I don't even use any case. So it is not like the case is too tight and ripping the coating off. I don't have a case on it because I hate the bulk. I got a 2 years old Pixel 2 with only a dbrand skin on the back, never had a case on it. I just removed the skin when I got my 4XL and basically the phone is in pristine condition. It just annoys me that my P4XL shows wear in few weeks.
Basically it got damaged in my pockets somehow, which is weird because I always make sure I don't have any debris in it and I never put anything else in my pocket.
Also, I have never dropped it. Anyway, it seems like I need to get a rubber case or something if I don't want the whole thing to come off by the end of this year.

Get a thin case and I would recommend contacting support and see if they would do a RMA for you. Doesn't hurt to try before they start giving out refurbished replacements.

Does anyone keep their phone "naked"?

I've had my phone for a few weeks now with a case on it (body glove mirage). The case is really good, but every time I have to take it off for something I'm reminded how much better the phone feels with no case on it.
I'm curious, has anyone kept it naked? How well has it held up? I'm wondering if anyone who's done this now has scratches or anything on the metal back of the phone.
Thanks!
Mine has been naked since i got it on launch day - still looks new without a single mark on it. I have put my keys in my pocket with it a couple times, but i move them when I realize it.
No scratches on glass, metal or plastic.
I've got butterfingers so for me the case keeps me from tossing he phone across the room when I take it out of my pocket. Plust without it the phone almost feels too light

Hmm. This is promising lol. I do keep it in a pocket with nothing else. I used to keep my iPhone 3g in with my keys. The back did not enjoy that, though the front stayed relatively scratch free.

I've dropped phones before too, thankfully not my Captivate yet. I just played with it without the case some more and it just makes life so much easier. A lot less reaching.
It's so tough. I've never used cases before because I hate the way all of them feel and the width they add. But I also don't want to destroy my phone like my 3G lol.
If you keep it naked don't drop it! The glass is supposed to be tough and scratch resistant but the paint on the metal back plate scratches easily and the plastics get dings when it hits the ground. I droped my phone twice in one day and now have a ding in each corner. That's 2 dings each time I lost hold of it. Now it has one of those film protectors front back and sides. And I have the body gloves case that I go back and forth between.

I have also had mine without a case/screen protector since launch day. the only noticeable scratches are light ones at the top and bottom where it curves on the plastic body. other than that, the screen and back are perfect. I have dropped mine a few times, but its usually about from 2-3' up, nothing like a 6' drop.
Interesting stuff. I think ultimately I'll decide to keep the case on. Because I know that one time I drop it or get a decent scratch I'm going to be cursing myself out for not having it on there lol.
Side question: How well do we think these phones will hold their value?
I ask because I was able to sell my 3g on ebay for $130 even though the screen was dead, the camera was dead, and it was really scratched up. Not bad since I paid 200 for it a year and a half before!

That's the one good thing about buying Apple ANYTHING. It holds its value like crazy. I can tell you from experience that the 1 year old HTC Hero can still fetch 200 bucks. A Samsung Moment can get about $150.
The Captivates are selling on Ebay right now for about $400.
My 3G got scuffed on the back from pulling it in and out of a belt holster that was lined. I finally decided no more holsters.
As for value - I got $190 for my 8GB 3G. It is hard to say about these. Lots of people want contract free phones. Since the captivate has top notch hardware with 16GB internal and expandable storage, I think it is a good value.
If we can unlock them after Froyo (AT&T said they would after 90 days to me anyway) then I think I can get my $150 back I paid for the phone maybe more.
It is all about supply and demand. I am amazed someone paid what they did for my 3G - it is old hardware, but Apple has people fooled. iPhone 4 is going for $900 on eBay - crazy stuff. As long as Apple doesn't sell an unlocked US version contract free, the prices will stay sky high on iPhone. Captivate, not so much. The non-contract price is about $500 so in 2 years what will people pay for a used one?
Well it really depends which network and which phone I think the captivate being the only decent android on at&t will last a bit longer than maybe the vibrant and other variants like the fascinate or epic whose carriers embrace high end android phones

i go no case.....had my iphone 3g with no case for probably a year and a half, and now i am running a naked captivate also. I actually like the feel of a case better, but have yet to find one i feel like investing in....and it looks so awesome without a case!!
I absolutely love my Body Glove case. It's the best mobile device case I've ever used, and I've had a cell phone for thirteen years.
I kept my first captivate naked for the first three days and noticed that my "Scratch Resistant Gorilla Glass" couldn't hold up to three days in the pocket of my slacks by itself. I was just beside myself as I've had an iphone without a screen protector since the phone launched, and never saw a scratch otherwise.
Seems to me that between the iPhone 4 and Captivate both having threads and threads of scratched devices, Corning needs to rethink the Gorilla Glass formula. Whatever the 3GS screen cover was made of should be the standard. I beat the hell out of that phone and not one scratch to be seen.
I really liked the phone design and lines so I went with zagg max protection. It's just like the screen protector but covers the whole body of the phone, it has no shock protection but its virtually scratch proof.

Naked since day 1. With the exception of 2x 3"x1/4" eGrips strips I put on the back cover sides to prevent me from fumbling the phone like a wet bar of soap. Love the thin-ness and the egrips don't hinder "pocketability".
Had the Sony X10 then switched to the Captivate. I go naked just keep loose change and keys in other pocket. Love the thinness of the phone. Still searching for that perfect skin. Tried a few but just make the phone bulky. A lot of the wear and tear of a phone has to do with your job and lifestyle. Learning to adapt to how you work or play and also how soon you want another phone(gadget lust) plays a part. I tend to sell/trade a newly released phone within 6 months so I try to keep them like new. But to each his own.

[Q] Captivate rather fragile

Dropped my cappy yesterday and killed it.
It only dropped from about shoulder height to the garage floor. Picked it up and found one corner of the display still lit and 3 internal cracks going across the display.
Pulled the battery and powered back up to a dead screen.
I've dropped every cell phone I've owned, this is the first time a drop has damaged one. Seems rather fragile to me. I have the insurance so I'll be getting a new one.
Anyone else kill theirs by dropping?
Shoulder height to floor could be 5 feet or higher. That's a pretty good drop for a phone with as minimal a case as this one.

How is your otterbox? Is it the sticky rubber kind that sticks to your pocket? I still have the body glove one. Tried a hard case but found it to be too bulky and hard to get to the dropdown menu.

So, other phones dropped on a concrete surface survived?
Dropped my D1 while holding it to my ear to the hardwood floor before. Battery poped out as well as got a ding on the side of the phone, but screen is fine. Tough little phones
This just in: glass cracks when dropped on concrete. News at 11.
Ok, to be serious, without a case, I would *expect* a fall from that height to break the glass on the screen. Yes it's hardened & scratch resistant Gorilla glass, but it's still glass after all. I mean, look at Pyrex. That stuff is amazing, but drop a Pyrex beaker on a lab floor, and you're still likely to smash it.
I'd suggest a case that includes lots of rubber, and maybe a screen protector. Both will help in case of drops/falls. Personally, I use an otterbox w/o anything over the screen, but it's all up to you...
Also "[Q] This is My Opinion" is not really a question. Just sayin'.

Ya, I've probably had 12-15 cell phones over the years, starting with the Motorola "Brick".
I've dropped every single on of them, even threw one across the room (but thats another story) I've ended up with broken covers and dents and dings, but everyone of them kept on working. None of them ever had any kind of case.

Didn't break the outside glass. The internal glass has 3 cracks running across it but the outside glass is fine.
after that many different phones all hitting the floor at some point dont you think its about time for one to finally break on you? i mean, you can drop a single phone a hundred times from the same distance and it work just fine with just a scratch, but if it hits a sweet spot like a corner, then it could completely shatter,
and that said, my cappy has survived several falls, but it was always in the otterbox, so its survived so far.

Have you ever owned a phone with a "glass" screen before?
Either use a case or don't drop it.
I have a cheap $5 rubber case on mine and have dropped several times without issue. As has been said, if it falls just right, it will crack but the gorrilla glass in these is pretty damn durable.
I have no case on mine and have dropped it many times, still looking good here.

Threw my fuze into a wall. Dug it out and it worked just fine.
my captivate survived 2 drops on...1 on concrete 1 asphalt. Bad habit it setting my phone on my lap in the car. Both times i stood up out of SUV and phone fell probably 4.5-5 feet onto ground....1 fall = 1 small scratch on the plastic at bottom of the phone....2nd drop = no damage....phone is in case now wasn't going to test my luck with a 3rd.

[Q] Back damaged due to flip case?

Hi everybody!
The past 3 months, i've been the proud owner of an HTC one, but something has been bothering me for some time now: even though i am very careful with my phone and keep the case on it at all times, the back has accumulated quite a lot of small 'craters'. These only seem to appear where the back should be protected by the hard part of my official htc one double dip flip case. I have checked time and time again if there was any sand in between, and there never was any, nor was there anything else in there.
I will try to post a decent picture later on, but i was wondering: what should i do? Do i have any chance to get a new device?

Thanks in advance,

Avoid trying to get a new one or just that ****ty case?
You should use a TPU case. I got myself the Cimo one. It's flexible and offer all around protection, except for the speaker grills. Just clean it inside as a precaution before putting your phone in there. Your flip case obviously got some debris inside which pressed against the soft aluminium back of the phone when you closed it and put it in your pocket or bag.

I decided to go for a little more protection and ordered myself the UAG navigator It'll take some weeks to get here though, so hopefully my back plate won't be screwed up entirely by then :/
Does anybody know if it's posible to polish it out a bit, etc?
Better use otterbox commuter series for better protection.

I just did that last night. The OtterBox Commuter has the best protection v/s slimness.I got myself the black one. I really wanted the Glacier model but the colors in reality do not match what you see in the rendered pictures. The light grey is actually absolutely white and the darker grey is actually light grey. I don't want a white case as my phone is black for a reason - no worries about dust, etc making it look dirty.

Avoid the case, it's crap. I've got the double dip too which has been fine although some people have said that it also has scratched their One, so take care with it.
A silicon case is obviously the safest choice but then again it's not going to be the prettiest either.
I've actually not got anything on mine at all now, I love the aesthetics of the phone and putting a case on it is just going to spoil that.
Have never dropped it yet (touch wood) and if I ever break it then i'll just get another one anyway so not really bothered too much.
PS: The urban cases are pretty good, you should check them out if youre looking for something rugged and decent looking.

[Q] Has anyone cracked the back of their Galaxy S6?

My girlfriend and I are new Tmobile customers and preordered the regular S6. We recently got two of the Ringke Slim clear cases (I wanted a clear one because I really like the blue/black combo). The case was pretty tough to put on. It's hard plastic and required a fair bit of force. This was probably a week ago.
This morning, I notice the back of my girlfriend's phone has a crack on it, probably about 2 inches long in the bottom left corner. She insists she hasn't dropped it, and I believe her, because she's been taking exceptional care of the phone.
The case has no damage, not even a scuff, which I would expect if it was dropped on something hard. The phone itself is also not damaged aside from the crack. There is NO damage to the medal edges, so I'm positive a drop didn't cause this.
Could it be a manufacturing defect? We didn't pick up the insurance, because we're both extremely careful with our phones. Is she boned? T-Mobile can't do anything, and sent us to Samsung. Samsung is having her send it in for an "evaluation" but I feel like it's just to shut us up.

Samsung has a lot invested in making sure the S6 has a successful launch - I have a feeling that they are simply going to replace your back glass and be done with it - they don;t want a lot of negative comments popping up on forums and stuff - I may be wrong - but I bet when all is said and done, your girlfriends phone will look good as new.
As for cracks - glass is glass - it could have been caused by anything - hitting something hard in her purse - maybe a combination of stress and banging around - ...it happens - and glass will break - sometimes easily -
regardelss - good luck - it is such a nice phone it would suck if you had to carry it aorund with a crack - fingers crossed that Samesung steps up and fixes it for you -no charge. GOOD LUCK!

That's my guess. Never understood why girls put their phone in their back pocket and then sit down all the time. That's just asking for a crack in an all glass phone
Yeah, I was never one to fawn over all glass devices and their """premium""" feel and glass backs are just ripe for breaking. While I never dropped my phone, it has slipped from my hand on to surfaces just below my hand. There is now a tiny crack at the bottom center that can be felt only in one direction when running my perpendicular over it.

Cracks

I thought I had a very fine barely noticeable scratch both on the front and back glass. There is nothing in my pocket or where I place my phone usually that would scratch it(plus isn't it gorilla glass 5?).
Anyway, now I look at the back and that very fine scratch has expanded... GREAT, it's not a scratch but a crack. The front is staying put but the back crack is spreading and now split off to form another one. It is very tiny and you have to angle the phone to see it.
This phone has never been dropped. I don't put it in my back pocket. Nothing has ever been placed or dropped on top of it. WTF?
Anyone else have this problem. I doubt this is covered under warranty. I am so pissed. My last couple phones have been disasters. I need to stop buying phones right after they come out... (all though that might not help as the nexus 6p I had didn't have problems for a year. argh! why do phones suck these days)
It sounds like a manufacturer defect. And that's difficult because you have to prove that. Perhaps you can just go into wherever you got it or to a carrier store and talk to them and explain. They might be cool with replacing it.
I've read a lot of posts around talking about how this phone scratches easily. It's actually got me considering putting on a screen protector and I've never done that before.
Could the crack possibly be due to heat causing the expansion of the glass? I'm thinking perhaps the gap everyone talks about on the note 3 note 4 etc models is for that reason. To allow the glass some space when it gets hot.
Just my thoughts.

I have the light leak along the sides, but it is not caused by a gap in the glass. It's the black along the edges of the screen not being all the way to the very bottom.

I have yet to join an XDA forum regarding all the mobiles I have owned in recent years and not found one of these threads.
Some peers actually claim to have had their screen crack overnight while on the bed side table? And so it goes on. Its a mystery?
I have seen an 18" dia ships porthole 1.5" thick get dropped and not break yet overnight while standing in a wooden jig they have broken! Glass is an inherently odd material and I have no idea what you are going to do to resolve this situation? This phenomena can happen but its generally owners who, either known or unkown, break the glass.
Where is the crack? Can you possibly post a photo? This would be invaluable to asses what may have accurd.
This could be difficult for you to resolve. Have you insured it?

I noticed I have a crack on the back as well. Been in a case since I got it and no drops, but still a crack. Don't know how it got there, but at least I can't see it

I was on the Verizon support site tonight. There are a small number of people there who are complaining about this exact thing.
