Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) T-Mobile Version - Using Google Fi Data Only SIM - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Guides, News, & Discus

I've purchased the new Galaxy Tab A 8.4 2020 directly from Samsung. There are only carrier-locked versions, but as Google Fi user, I picked the T-Mobile version as likely the 'most compatible' with Fi, which uses T-Mobile/Sprint for most of its connectivity.
As I don't want to pay for another Fi account, I ordered (for free) a data-only SIM from Google - it works perfectly. Normally, I run off of wifi only, turning Airplane Mode on first, then turning on wifi. I've traveled with it outside the house once, and used the data SIM very nicely. As a Fi user, I can also make calls from it, over data, wifi or LTE.
Some notes on the tablet:
Good:
1. It is fast enough for all my needs, and with a micro SD in addition to the SIM, set as additional storage, I have plenty of room for my needs. NOTE: I don't play games, so I can't comment on game performance.
2. Face recognition works well as long as there is enough light - in dim light, you will have to use PIN/Password, as there is no fingerprint reader.
3. I was able to source a case via Amazon, there are a number of choices.
4. USB C
Not So Good:
1. No fingerprint reader.
2. No ambient light sensor, so you will be adjusting lighting manually. There are apps which use the camera for this, but then you will lose face recognition unlocking.
3. Samsung's Usual Bloatware: I use virtually none of it, not even Touchwiz, as I prefer Nova.
4. Although the case has magnets, they won't turn off the screen when the cover is closed, you will have to turn it off manually or wait for it to timeout.
5. Running Android 9, and nothing available as to when, if ever, it will get an upgrade.
6. Security patch is Feb 1, 2020 and no idea if/when it will get another.
Using the XDA app.. it identifies as an AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 3 !
All in all, I judge this to be an 'OK' but not great effort from Samsung for $264. For a few more bucks, it could have been a lot better. If the Lenovo new M8 had not been out of stock, I might have bought it instead and saved $130.
You can find the T-Mobile version at: https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/t...-8-4-2020-32gb-mocha-t-mobile-sm-t307uznatmb/
regards, John

Did some Geekbench 5 testing, comparing it against my Huawei Mediapad M3 running an in-process version of Lineage 15.
The M3 runs Kirin 950, 4 cores @ 1.8 and 4 cores @ 2.3 The Tab A runs an ARMv8, 6 cores @ 1.59 and 2 cores @ 1.77
The M3 won the CPU test, single core 351 multi core 1267, with the Tab A at single core 271 and multi core 965
The M3 has a Mali T880, and the Tab A has a newer Mali G71 graphics engine.
Trying to run the Compute test (Vucan), the M3 failed to run a number of tests, giving it a very low 105, while the Tab A got a 774
However, until the M3 started failing to run tests, and having started both at the same time, they were literally neck-in-neck for speed. The supposed advantage of the G71 is 20% reduction in power use.
I will run the Huawei numbers again after the Lineage ROM is more stable.

Update Received! 6/15/2020
Received update this morning - I was hoping for update to Android 10, but this one was to May Security update, May kernel update. New build number is PPR1.180610.011.T307USQS2ATE3
I am happy to see an indication that this tablet is going to get updates!
I'm not yet noting any differences from before the update.

At&T Samsung Tab A 8.4 SM-T307U
I wanted to buy unlock version of this tablet from samsung but unfortunately they only sell carrier version.
I have a T-Mobile free line that wasn't in use so thought i should buy this tablet use it in my car for music, GPS, OBDII etc. I didn't buy the T-mobile version because the free line that i have is for cellphone and If i would buy T-mobile version of this tablet, they would ask me to change the line to data only and wouldn't be unlimited anymore. So i went with AT&T version and was cheaper also, AT&T unlocked it for me in about 48hrs after request.
It works fine with T-mobile and was hoping it would switch the firmware to T-mobile once i put the sim like it does with Samsung phone that it initializes the sim and reboots with that carrier software but the Tablet doesn't do that. I even flash T-Mobile Firmware, it flashes successfully but still AT&T stuff is on the tablet. I was able to uninstall/disable most of the At&t bloat but not all. So came to XDA to find root or custom firmware but unfortunately nothing yet.

Update - Occasional Freezing
I use the Brave browser, and on this Tab A, I occasionally run into the screen freezing for no apparent reason. It eventually unfreeze, but is disconcerting.

OP, how did you manage to get the SIM card to authenticate on your Google Fi account? I purchased this tablet to use for work as I am an Uber driver and tried to authenticate the device with a data-only SIM card. The device manages to use 3g and technically works without authentication through the Fi app but is worthlessly slow this way. I can't rely on a 3g connection for the Uber driver application. When I try to authenticate the device using the Fi app, it takes awhile before stating the device isn't compatible with Fi.
Did you authenticate the app with a different device and then insert it into the tab A 8.4 2020? Just to confirm ahead of time, I too have the T-Mobile version of the tablet.
Thank you if you get this and have the time to explain how you managed to make the device work!

I actually use it for news, reading etc. I have not tried to make Fi calls over 3g/LTE - just tried to do so, did not work, but I will try it again. It has worked fine for data over LTE. You can now have both Fi and Google Voice numbers, maybe get a Google Voice number and try calling over 3G with that?

I'm not too worried about the ability to make/receive calls and my tablet states that my device is on LTE but I can be sure by the incredibly slow speeds I'm getting that it is locked to 3g. It takes minutes to load simple web pages. When you go to the Fi app does it state that your device is authenticated with the SIM associated to a tab A 8.4?
I just want LTE to use for Uber so I don't have my main phone pinned at maximum brightness all the time as this can cause burn in issues with the OLED display.
Edit: I was able to solve the issue with the help of tech support. The solution is to activate the SIM manually through the Fi website (fi.google.com/data) and restart the device with the SIM inserted (also the support rep had me delete the Fi app before restarting). Hope this helps anyone who finds this thread in the same way I did!

Updated today, 108MB download, security patch level 1 July 2020. Kernel 4.4.177-18047720 Jul 8. Seems like a large patch for just security, but no other major changes observable. Still Android 9. Unable to find any public information on if/when upgrade to Android 10 will occur.

I'm surprised that a 2020 device doesn't even have any public info when it's going to catch up with present time's Android 10 (while there are already plans in the industry for Android 11). Very disappointing...

Update to Android 10 has been published by Samsung, and apparently is being sent out by Verizon. Nothing from T-Mobile yet... https://doc.samsungmobile.com/sm-t307u/glw/doc.html

T-Mobile Upgrading to 10 Today
Updated to Android 10, so far without issue. Security patch level Sept 1, 2020

I have sadly figured out that my old Huewei Mediapad 3 running a custom ROM https://forum.xda-developers.com/mediapad-m3/development/rom-t4085115/page58 has much better wifi reception that my new Galaxy Tab 8.4 2020

Unexpected update received today; still on Android 10, One UI 2.1, kernel 4.4.177-19484886, Build QP1A.190711.020.T307USQS3BTJ1
Security patch level Oct-2020 Release 1
This is the first time I've seen security patch levels updated two months in a row. The lack of an update to Android 11 is still very disappointing.

I have one too. How did you remove all the bloatware? Is possible to root it?

I have not removed bloatware, and it is not rooted. Mine is still not even unlocked, as I refuse to pay T-Mobile for 6 months of service I don't need.
I have Google Fi data chip in it, which works fine, and I use Nova launcher on all my phones and tablets so as to have a consistent interface.
As far as I know, no developer is working on unlocking/rooting or custom ROM.

I flashed Canadian Samsung tab A 8.4 Firmware (XAC)which is unlocked LTE version of this tablet. Not a single bloat and is faster than At&t firmware. I'm able to send/receive sms and mms, Hotspot but no call. So my t-mobile phone sim works in this unlocked At&t tablet with unlimited data.
XAA USA unlocked
XAC CANADA Unlocked.

My problem is, I don't believe I can flash any firmware until I can unlock the tablet - which I can't do without T-Mobile. Or am I missing something?

Updated today to Android 10, One UI 2.1, Jan 1 Security patch. I thought that the One UI 3.0 came with Android 10, but that's not what sys info says. I use Nova so I don't much care.
Running Geekbench 5, results are Single Core, 271 and multi-core, 998 virtually the same as day 1.

Note 8 keep dropping connection once a while. Cannot call, text, data.

Hi! Thanks for reading my problem.
I have a tmobile note 8 that I have successfully switched to verizon firmware according to the guide here. It got the verizon boot logo and bloatware just like vzw phone.
It work perfectly after the switch, 4g lte ,call or text all work.
But it will drop after a while of use. It can be a few hours or few minutes. I cannot receive call, cannot access internet, cannot make call...
If I restart it all will become working again for a while. Any recommendation how to fix it? Thanks again.
I have a note 8 (SM-N950F/DS) for about three weeks now. I am using FP on AT&T network. When I just got it, especially while I was moving in the car or train, it would lost the data connection quite often even though showing full bar signal. I had to put it on air plane mode then switched back to reconnect.
Then after 1-2 weeks of use, the issue went away. I don't know it was due to the latest update (I am on Dec security patch now) or some kind of the phone learning my travel pattern.

Interesting, My phone lost it while I m at work... not even moving
For the longest time I thought was alone here. VZ Wireless Note 8 user here. My signal also just drops out of no where. When I look at my screen the 4G LTE upload up arrow is the only one turning up and down. Sometimes this issue will go away on its own after a few minutes or longer. But, randomly out of nowhere this started to happen. Few weeks now and counting I'm guessing it has something to do with a update that I recently upgraded to. I never had this issue when I first had my phone.....
I also have the problem.. Also Verizon branded Note 8.
I see a global Android update coming to possibly address this
From Android Headlines (AH):
"New Android Update For Galaxy Note 8 Improves LTE Stability"
"The latest Android update for the Galaxy Note 8 was designed to improve the stability of the phablet’s 4G LTE functionality as it specifically addresses a bug that occasionally caused interruptions of such connections, as revealed by a changelog published by Samsung earlier this week. The update appears to be rolling out on a global level, with its distribution officially starting on Wednesday, 15 days after the Seoul-based phone maker launched the latest security patch for the same handset."
Starting this month..
Anyone with ideas how to resolve this in the meantime?
I am still having this problem after oreo update.. I don't think I want samsung anymore..
Ok guys those who have Verizon, go to settings, mobile settings and change network to cdma and reset your settings. Turn off the phone, pop the sim tray out, power up ur phone while sim is out and turn off the phone again, this time push ur sim card in and turn on your phone. It should solve the problem of signal being dropped. Good luck.

US Cellular Note 9 no longer updating on AT&T?

Back in July I got a steal on a new US Cellular Galaxy Note 9, so I immediately threw my iPhone 6S SIM card into it and went through several rounds of software updates. After the last update the splash screen switched to AT&T and it suddenly had several AT&T apps. It didn't TOTALLY eliminate the US Cellular stuff because I had to delete at least one app and change the Samsung browser's default home page.
Due to the iPhone SIM card and some stuff on AT&T's side, it would not do VoLTE or WiFi calling until I got a new SIM and had AT&T use the IMEI from an AT&T Galaxy Note 9 (read it off one from the store). I did that in late August and the only remaining issue O noticed was that my MMS messages will not download as long as I am on WiFi.
I just noticed what may be a new issue: I think I stopped getting carrier updates. Looking on AT&T's site, I see that they have multiple newer updates with the latest from September 18th:
https://www.att.com/devicehowto/tut...tep_KM1278532?make=Samsung&model=SamsungN960U
My "Security Patch Level" says May 1, 2019, while AT&T's website says that there have been 4 updates since then (latest at Security Patch Level September 1, 2019).
My baseband version doesn't quite match any of the ones associated with AT&T updates, though their May 22nd update seems to be the most similar (AT&T's N960USQS1CSE1 compared with my N960USQU1CSE3).
I recall that the new phone updated multiple times and was still on Oreo before it updated again to Pie, and again to AT&T-flavored Pie. I figure the final update was really just adding the AT&T apps and splash screen, but it somehow stopped me from getting further updates from US Cellular. I'm pretty sure I had an AT&T SIM card inserted for all of my updates.
On that note, I believe I tossed the original SIM and US Cellular does not operate in my region (only showed up here through a salvage store). I'm not easily able to get another US Cellular SIM for triggering it to revert to a US Cellular ROM. I'm not interested in custom ROMs and all that and ultimately just want to keep my phone up to date the same way a normal AT&T customer would after buying theirs from AT&T. I thought the Note 9 adding carrier customizations to match the inserted SIM would take care of all this automatically (half the point, right?) but I guess I was wrong.
Is it possible to get carrier updates like I was getting before? If not, what would you guys recommend for getting up to date and staying up to date? Thanks!

Samsung Galaxy S10 - Unlocked Phone (AT&T Blocked Call Issue)

So many people are reporting with the 3/1 sweep by AT&T, that they are blocking almost all Unlocked phones: See: Downdector Link We personally have a S10 (G973U1). AT&T is saying on this list: AT&T approved phone list that it is supposed to work. But like many other people "calls" end immediately, but we can text and data work. It is some sorta ploy by AT&T to force us to upgrade our phones. They want us all to upgrade to S22s. Anyway I was ranting. Anyway, if you look at that link, they are saying that the phone has to be on the latest software. The last update from AT&T or the manufacturer was in January. I checked the firmware site, and Android 11 is the latest in January. I'm wondering if there is some hack to get us on to '12' or something. An update might solve this issue. We know that a new SIM does not work. Calls seem to be rejected on the network, just based on the phone model or Android version.
We are aware that a version 12 is out there for the phone, just that firmware is not for our US-unlocked model yet. But maybe it can be hacked?
Edit: It appears this thread may be linked with this older one... But it is ever more pressing issue now:
S10 Unlocked phone with AT&T Firmware here they explain how, and the problems with flashing. This was back in 2019, so I'm not sure if this will still work. Even then it didn't work for everyone. Some in that forum claimed that it did. AT&T seems to now be blocking from their calling network any phones not enabled with VOLTE and the extended AT&T services that are not present in Unlocked phones.

I was helped by a user to achieve ascendance onto the AT&T network. I'm not sure if I'm to reveal his name. We 1) go into Developers mode on the phone. 2) Hack the Kernel. 3) Flash the rom to the G973U (model)... with the AT&T firmware. So that the Wifi-Calling and 5G features would work, and AT&T would allow it on their network.

At first I had to use the Samsung Band Selector app from the Play store and go into More Network Settings > AT&T > Preferred Network Type and choose 3G. Unfortunately this killed LTE so all data and calls were going through H+. As I was mostly on wifi I could live with it since I could actually use the phone again.
Then Friday morning I checked for updates and there was the update to take me to Android 12. I took the update then when it finished it said it needed to reboot to connect new SIM to carrier services....it wasn't a new SIM. I let it reboot and everything was working with VoLTE again.
Hope this helps.

Question Network issues, dropped calls, cant recieve calls

Hi all,
I have tried so far two brand new Pixel 7s. I am from Slovakia (unsupported country), moved from Pixel 6 to Pixel 7.
Once I get the phone, it runs on TD1A.220804.009.A2
It offers me straight away December update. When I accept, phone restarts and then I cant receive phone calls, time to time people try to call me but my phone behaves like its turned off.
I have returned the PIXEL 7 and got a new one. Now I didnt accept December update, and thinngs are OK. Anyone having the same issues?
I have turned off now automatic updates via developer options and trying to survive without December update
As long as the version you have has the one huge hole in Android 12 patched you should do fine without updates. This N10+ in my hand hasn't been updated for 3 years. Current load is almost 2.5 yo. Security simply isn't an issue in its current configuration.
Updates/upgrades can and do break things. Just don't do stupid things; almost all malware is installed or downloaded by the user.

You live in an unsupported country too, without VoLTE and 3G towers around You, You won't be able to use the Pixel 7 as a phone. You have to root and install VoLTE fix or unlock the bootloader and use the Cleanslate kernel.

Thats Good to know I have already returned the Pixel 7, but retailers should know this I guess, otherwise they will have plenty of returned phones.

Yes, they should know, but they don't care (?). Just look at Alza.sk (or .cz, .hu): you can buy Pixel with 5G support. These countries are unsupported by Google, so officially the 5G network can't be used... As a Vodafone user in Hungary, I had to root the phone and install VoLTE fix; in this part of the country where I live 3G network is shut down, I was unable to make phone calls. Just Telekom users can make phone calls without issues (they have VoLTE enabled but not 5G); where the other carriers have 3G, the phone is usable (at least, now).

SM-N910T on T-Mobile USA in 2023?

I am contemplating purchase of one of these phones, and tried entering some of their IMEI numbers in the imei checker at https://www.t-mobile.com/resources/bring-your-own-phone , and was shocked to find they are ALL described as "Incompatible".
This is a bit confusing after the articles saying the AT&T and Verizon versions would not work after Jan 2021 but that the T-Mobile version would continue working. I tried looking for a later article saying that support for the T-Mobile version this model was being cancelled but could not find any such announcement.
Is that IMEI checker correct? Or is it because the samples I checked may not have gotten the last modem update installed from T-Mobile?
Is anyone still using this phone (specifically the T variant) on T-Mobile in USA? I'm assuming that last update will be important, but does this still work once it is installed?
If yes to the above, do phone calls work as VoLTE, or is it doing the fallback to 2G?
I've also seen threads about enabling more LTE bands, has anyone done that on this phone? In particular is it possible to add support for B71 (600MHz), or is this radio hardware just too old to allow that?
Thanks much, I would really like to know whether I can use this phone or if I would need to find a different model.
https://swappa.com/blog/3g-network-shutdown/ Your phone is fine.
SM-N910T with 2ETI1 OTA modem update works fine. 4g/LTE Data, WiFi Calling works. Does not drop out of 4G/LTE for voice. SM-N910V w/ MODestROM v11 (6.01 TW-based N910VVRU2CQI2 ) w/ a vzw 2CTI baseband update, has working 4gLTE data, but no WiFi Calling, or VoLTE (falls back to 2g, but I still have 2g coverage here, so it's usable, if not optimum. Here's the thing: on the VZW phone, if I set the the salescode to TMB, suddenly VoLTE works, but the Setup pages/menus/statusbar are screwed up, so it's not really useable. Here's where it gets REAL interesteing. On a VZW phone w/ VZW 2CTI1 baseband, & VZW BL, flashed with a custom TMB ROM (trltetmo_N910TUVU2EQI2_Stock_Deodexed, debloated, but still TW), EVERYTHING works. But it's not stable, it periodically loses 4g/lte. What it tells me is that the VZW h/w is NOT THE PROBLEM. I've been at this all day, everyday since VZW turned off CDMA on 01/01/23 and killed my service here. Be warned: If you go down this path, you're gonna be mostly on your own. A LOT of dead links, 'retired' devs, etc. Everyone except you, me, and three other people here have long since moved on from this awesome phone. I'll help you if I can. I bought an SM-N910T , but the damn usb port is dead. Already changed the charging board, not the problem. It's the mobo. If I could identify the usb chip (if it's not the 805 itself, I'd change it. So I have a phone with no adb that I can't unlock/root. I'd much rather get my VZW phone fully working on TMB, since I'm heavily invested in the MODestROM. Haven't given up yet. But search my posts, you'll hear the deafening silence, lol.
Seeing this forum has so little activity, on 1/21 I ended up getting a used Moto E6 (XT-2005-3 is a tmobile aka carrier unlocked MetroPCS version). While overall this is not as nice a device and has fewer features than Note 4, it does cover what for me are the essentials - removable battery, SD card slot, support for 5.8GHz wifi. Best of all, it supports B71 which will be helpful for, well, making phone calls!
I still ponder someday getting one of these as a hobby device, but that would be second place to the E6 for use as a phone, and won't be for a couple more months yet (too many expensive household issues are taking their toll on my "toy" budget right now).

Thank you, this was the part I needed to find out. With that in place, the only thing missing would be the B71 coverage but the E6 is already in place for that.
Re your Verizon adventures, I have no experience with any of that. What I read about T-Mobile dropping support for the verizon version in the last network update is all I know, and I don't have the skills to dispute what they say there. The best I could do is offer some links to threads on this forum but on double checking them it seems you've already been there and got no answers.
The only thing I see that might help you with that is if you could update just the t-mobile modem without disturbing the verizon bootloader. I see you tried that but it didn't stick when using Odin. I don't know if it would be any different using SmartSwitch that seemed to work for MarineWonder as he posted at https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...pgrade-on-jan-29th-2021.4224237/post-87464609 ?
Then again he may have been putting it on a t-mobile phone rather than mixing with the verizon bootloader so who knows?
My guess since it has been so problematic for you on the verizon phone is that you may need to only use a tmobile phone since that may be the only way to get the last t-mobile modem update. Bummer that the one you bought has a dead usb port. How are you charging it? Is there any chance you could return it to the seller since it came pre-broken? Then put the refund money toward another, hopefully working, tmobile phone? And would that MODestROM work on a non-verizon phone?
The only other thought I had is there are apps to connect to ADB over wifi. Sadly most of these need root. The ones that don't, seem to need at least once using a usb connection to do the "adb tcpip 5555" command to set it all up. . . . how annoying that it is all so circular!
There is also https://telnetd.en.aptoide.com/app?store_name=apps&app_id=59202144 , maybe a telnet connection could do the "adb tcpip 5555" command instead of using the USB connection? Sadly the documentation (at https://waxrain.com/docs/010.html ) appears to be written in Chinese, and I never had much luck with google translate.
The N910T still supports VoLte.. It is still compatible with cellular networks.
