Own and love the Galaxy Nexus, I think 16gb is well more than enough storage for on-the-go music and app combination.
The two major issues I have with it however are:
1) The camera quality.
I find the image quality quite grainy after taking photos. The camera just doesn't cut it for me. However I'm hoping that the 8MP camera on the Nexus4 (I know megapixels isn't everything) will solve that issue.
***2) THE SPEAKER LOUDNESS***
I think of the old Christmas poem "Night Before Christmas"...

That'll be the deciding factor on if I'll be picking up the phone or not, in all honesty.

the LG Optimus G have very weak speaker, saying that when on its back, one might even miss a phone call. Although that doesn't necessarily mean it will be the same for the Nexus 4.
As for camera, I have no proof that the 8MP camera of this device is similar to one on the Optimus G for ATT, but maybe if it is, we can look at those sample shots posted online. I think the general consensus is its not that great and might have trouble under low lighting. Overall I think it will be at least better than the current 5MP which is enough for me.
Just wait for feedbacks from other buyers before making the purchase.
PS. I still laugh at the fact when the Galaxy Nexus was just released people claimed its 5MP camera is better than the SII camera, even with side by side pictures comparison.
I'm disappointed it won't support GLONASS, base on the specs from the PlayStore.
The camera uses a Sony BSI Sensor, so I'm sure images will be crisp and sharp. Not sure what aperture it uses though, hopefully a f2.4/2.6.

Well, just a very very simple thought: they advertise with their new feature, that panorama thing .. that's one selling point.. so the camera quality MUST be good, right?
Oh man, but I just remember Apple's Maps service ... hmmm.
Here's hoping both are better on the Nexus 4 as they are both somewhat of a disappointment on my Galaxy Nexus for me.

From Josh Topolsky's initial impressions, he stated that the camera performance was a big improvement, and that Google has specifically concentrated on low-light performance. I have high hopes that a Sony sensor, let alone a BSI sensor, leads to respectable if not admirable image quality. If the f/2.4 aperture is an indication, we could easily see this sensor beat the GS3 in terms of how much light it lets in, but it all comes down to how aggressive noise correction is, which is entirely software, and affects image sharpness the most.
While the camera is a big deal to me (a BIG deal), what I'm more worried about is the speaker/earpiece output. As everyone knows, the GNex speaker and earpiece aren't great (that's putting it mildly), so I'm really hoping this phone has great speaker/earpiece volume. Do I expect it to rival my SIII? No. But being able to actually use the phone as a PHONE in a crowded place and being able to hear would be nice.

It is becoming a HUGE feature for people- and while software can correct come issues- hopefully it does, it has to have a good sensor to start- which the LG should.

Sony makes the camera for the legendary iPhones so I don't see why they would disappoint now.

ATT Optimus G has 13 mpx camera and LTE.
maybe that's why google decided to go without the 13 mpx camera and without LTE.
the 8 mpx camera which is also used in the sprint version is supposed to be better.
and leaving out LTE saves battery.

you got it reversed, Att model has the 8mp camera while the sprint version has the 13mp camera.

I mean that would be great as Sony makes the best sensors right now …
Thats pretty much one of my biggest selling points as i use the cameras a lot..

I dont expect the 920 to be great...the 900 was overhyped with the ziess lens and was garbage. the 920 will have GREAT low light photos- that much we know...as for regular performance, I think it will still be slightly below the top notch camera phones (S3, OneX, iphone, etc)
Praying the nexus 4 has a great camera...if so, I will snatch it up.

The One Series camera's and the Lumia 920 have a lower aperture f2.0 which is better suited for low light conditions. Now I'm pleased with the HOX camera, this has to be on par at least for day shots as I rarely take that many low light shots.
Be interesting to know what BSI module it uses so we can make comparisons!

I am in the market for a new phone. I use an old Samsung S3 now. The Z3Compact seems perfect, but my only concern is the camera. I use my phone as my main camera, but general consensus seems to be that it is not as good as the camera on the S5 of iPhone6. I like to shoot directly in HDR mode, but that seems to be a problem on the Z3. Without rooting, could I install the Google Camera apk and if so, would the Z3C be able to use the HDR mode from the Google Camera app?
Or should I change my plans and go for the S5?
The Google camera app on the Play Store installs fine. I'll post some comparison shots later this morning.
My sister has an S3 and we were taking comparison photos in her kitchen yesterday - obviously the z3c is a significant step up in quality from the S3, though I realize that's not really your question.

Google camera app permits HDR on the z3c.
Sony camera app also has HDR toggle in manual mode, but is grayed out if resolution is set higher than 8mp.
I know of several reviews claiming that Sony's Superior Auto mode isn't HDR, but since that mode captures at 8mp I'm wondering if it doesn't use it's internal HDR algorithm in auto mode, despite what I've seen the reviewers claim. I can't really tell the difference between Superior Auto and Manual 8mp HDR photos taken with the Sony camera app.

Ok, here are some comparison pictures of the Z3C's camera, using both the Sony Camera App, and the Google Camera App from the Play store.
I have uploaded the pictures to an imgur album, and added descriptions for the six photos. Just for clarity's sake, I should mention I am not really into photography that much, and my skills are probably not up to par for composing or technique, so take that into account.
There are six pictures (they're labeled appropriately in the album, but I'm reproducing them here so people can decide if they're interested before viewing them, since the images are large):
1) Sony App, Superior Auto setting (8mp), No Flash
2) Sony App, Superior Auto setting (8mp), Flash

I just did a quick Google cam vs stock cam test myself. The stock cam in auto mode definitely takes pics that are a little on the cold side. In manual mode though, it was more accurate. The google cam seemed more or less the same. I'm sticking with the stock Sony cam.

People shouldn't act as if the camera is bad, it's not bad at all. Just in some situations it under performs against iOS and the S5 for example, but in other situations it' better.

Thank you. Not quite made up my mind yet. I read a lot of horrorstories on broken glass... maybe the S5 proves out to be a more secure option. Good camera, waterresistant and plastic - which in my S1 and S3 has survived a lot of drops.
I think it comes down to how important the form factor and potential battery life advantages are over other stuff.
There are choices with slightly better cameras and certainly ones less vulnerable to accidental damage.
For me, coming off Nexus 5 and Note 3, I am really prioritizing battery longevity, pocket friendliness and better one-handed comfort and use. So far I'm pleased but it's still early days so the jury's still out for me.
Be sure you can live with TouchWiz and other Samsung bloat (bugs with erroneous Knox warnings on the AT&T Note 3 model nearly drove me crazy). It really ruined my Note 3 experience for me and is what drove me to the Nexus 5, which in turn was somewhat spoiled by awful battery life despite rooting and aggressively optimizing (to the point of limiting usefulness) power consumption. Never got more than 8-10 realistic hours on the 5 no matter what I tried.
Form factor is great. As is battery life. That's one side. Other side is the camera, and how it stands up to a drop from the pocket. That last bit worries me.
Well I haven't had the Sony long enough to try and convince you the advantages outweigh the drawbacks - I may drop mine and destroy it this afternoon!
But I'm not sure any unprotected high end smartphone stands all that good a chance of surviving any particular dropping incident, and adding a protective case to a smaller device still nets you a slightly larger small device that is still a a lot smaller profile than a bigger device with a protective case. Just my. 02 worth.
It's not only dropping, but also spontanious cracks when carrying the Z3C in te front pocket. of your jeans. Been reading a lot of reports on that the last days.
Most of those reports are duplicates. Only a few confirmed cases.

As far as I'm concerned, every other phone has more so-called "dealbreakers" than the Z3C. This phone has so many plusses that outweigh any possible negatives that people need to imagine faults and come up with ridiculous issues not to get it, and that's their loss.

If you like to take nature photos, and if you are planning to watch the photos on something larger than the phone display, the Z3/compact is a bad choice. In this post is a comparison with the galaxy note 3

Thanks. the camera performance issues, the fact that HDR is a bit of a hustle to reach, and the reports of cracking displays have made me nervous enough to put my plans for buying the Z3C on hold, and maybe buy the S5. Not as pretty as the Z3C, but it may prove out to be a safe choice for now.

The HDR is easy, you just have to set it to 8MP or less, then HDR switch becomes available. And with the Z3 there is no point whatsoever to shoot in anything larger than 8MP anyway!
But yeah, if I would have known about the camera compression/oversharpening issues I would have settled for another phone. And speaking of compression, the funny thing is that in the comparison photos i posted, the file size of the inferior Z3 photo is about twice as large over the galaxy note photo!! Nice one Sony..

Well, there are not many options, if you want to keep pocketability, form factor and dedicated camera button.
I have some nice results with Pro Capture, but compared to stock camera app with a little touch of post processing (Snapseed e.g.), the camera is capable of some nice shots. But it's nothing THAT special really.
Still, beats my Nexus5 in terms of focus speed, which is kinda important for me, so...
But, YMMV.

Well, I really want the "small" form factor of Z3c, but without compromises. So that leaves most phones out I guess. Samsung galaxy alpha would have been nice, if it wasn't for the battery time and the big price tag. Probably would have waited with the purchase another 6 months or so, and see what the market looked like at that point.
I know I have ranted lots on the camera, but all things considered, it's still a great phone!

For the battery part I can confirm it last 6-7 hours of screen on time with normal internet browsing, unsure about gaming or watching video.

Image quality is Good in both natural as well as artificial lighting !!!
2X lossless zoom works fine also.
the battery life is good mate, i play modern strike online and guns of boom and it easily lasts a day.
the camera is ok but it will hopefully get better with some updates, the most annoying thing for me is no EIS and the 2x button actually just digitall zooms in to use the telefoto lens you need to go to manual mode and select it

I should say the phone is working good in all aspects but I'm completely disappointed with the dual camera, all the indoor shots are blurry (almost all) , to be honest, the selfie camera feels much better than the rear dual camera and the photos look okay in the outdoor. my brother has One Plus 2 (single camera 13MP), It's much better than this phone. I'm extremely surprised to see that many love Mi A1 camera but in reality, it looks very blurry. Initially, I thought It might be a hardware issue, but i don't think it's the hardware issue.
The reason for blurry photos might be because it doesn't have Optical image stabilization, so the output is blurry. Most of our photos will be indoor, so it should give decent output, but I'm disappointed with Mi A1 camera so far. Am i the only one here??? does anyone face this same issue??

Once development started, once we get to port pixel camera with hdr+ that should take care of the problem.. my blurry shots from my redmi note 4x was resolved by the pixel's hdr+ and i'm possitive it's gonna do the same thing for this mi a1..

Google camera doesn't improve much. i rooted it and enabled hal3 to check it. it's worthless. worse than redmi 3s.

Nope, results will only change if there's different sensor on different sets. but if there's no other sensor than OV12a10 , thn results won't be different. that sensor is just pure crap, hell even raw images can't give you better results on this sensor. i'm seriously disappointed by this.
i have a redmi 3s, when i saw about this phone , i was happy since it was supposed to come with imx386 sensor and stock android. i thought gcam with hdr+ will improve this phone even better than what it did with redmi 3s. but after trying it with gcam. oh man, never felt this much disappointed. it doesn't come with imx386 at all , and possibility of having imx386 on different set is 0. because firmware doesn't have libs for that sensor.

You are kind of wrong with the 2x digital zoom and telephoto lens, yes you can do it manually by selecting telephoto lens but for the automatic part I have tried, you need to have good lighting condition and than you press 2x on the screen it automatically switch to telephoto lens for optical zoom.
I have covered the telephoto lens and the camera goes black since I have covered it. For the low light condition I tried same thing by covering the telephoto lens and press on 2x and it still works because now this is digital zoom. I'm not sure if this suppose to be like this or a bug, sorry didn't do any research on that yet

Screen is very good. Very sensitive thou, even after update fix. It's very bright and has good colours.
Camera is not better than a iPhone 6 or Samsung S7. Better colour, but not sharp. I've tried and compared them because it felt like the pictures from the camera where really bad and had a lot of noise. But hey, I still love the phone for all its other things and I think the camera noise can be fixed with and update or third party app with full camera support.

The photos on my xz2 are better then my sister her s7 and my friend his s8 so weird why your pictures are noisy etc
I had a S7 before the xz2c and I confirm pictures are way better on xz2c with all lightning conditions... so don't say bull$hit!!

The front facing camera is terrible. It's incredibly soft and it's impossible to change things for the better. I'm wondering if I've got a faulty unit as the photos from most review sites don't show blurry soft selfies.
Can anyone comment first hand on this?

I am one of those users who would never mind to have no front camera, but then I realize couple times a month I use hangouts video with a friend, so for me it makes no difference what sensor is there, I would be fine with crappy 720p camera, but I tested couple selfie shots when I got my p30p, and I find it quite the opposite - very sharp, detailed, maybe a bit brighter than I would expect but not soft. For me a soft photo is a photo that lacks sharpness, this is not definitely not the case. And when I turn off the "beautify" sliders it really turns them off, this was the single worst thing on Samsung phones since S6. No matter what, selfie photos taken with samsung camera app always came out horrible for me, had to use 3rd party apps.
If you don't like the output out of huawei camera app try something else, everybody has different demands and expectations. Sensor-wise the front camera seems to be very good, and app wise the huawei camera app is very decent in my opinion.
Have you got firmware 124 yet? I am on 113, but I know that 124 is rolling out and has tons of fixes, which includes the camera. I have another P30 PRo arriving Tuesday, and that will have 124 out of the box. There is absolutely no point noting any bugs until on 124.

i'm on the newest FW .124 but still, the quality of the selfie camera is pretty terrible. Also the back cameras comparing to my P20 Pro are super soft. Don't know if it's software or hardware issue.
This is quite worrying.
I'm unsure what to expect now. Many reviews say categorically that it's better than P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro but a few of us are seeing something different.

I have 124 update and I think the front camera quality is amazing. I took many selfies and video samples today and zoomed in and the clarity and detail is impressive. Remember there is no auto focus so the sweet spot for crisp shots is 50-60cm which is literally arms length.

Maybe it's just your specific device??
I'd say, the quality of the front (and not only the front) camera is quite random.
Well in my case the front camera quality is amazing way too detailed can point out all the random grey hair popping off my skull
The selfie camera for me definitely looks better than my s10 plus.

In my opinion all the actual cameras are ok but its the terrible over processed end results from the software that we cant change that is the BIG problem with the P30 pro.
The only way to get a decent and natural non over processed image from the P30 pro is to shoot Raw(DNG) but for me if i want to mess around with raw I will use my camera.. NOT a phone.
I'm actually finding the front camera to be a lot better than my s10plus which I sealed from. I was pleased to discover.

Defo agree... I swapped for cameras. I am missing the screen and the speakers of the s10plus though..
Agreed, the Front Facing Camera is not good enough... Pixel 2 do it better.. in details and more...

Front camerA NO PROBLEME HERE!
I think there are 2 different problems at play here:
1: for the ppl saying its great for you -Congrats- you've done well to upgrade to the P30 Pro and it's relatively better front camera vs your old device.
2: The people complaining about blurry front camera are CORRECT, especially if you're coming from a P20 Pro or a Mate 20 Pro, objectively speaking - there is no comparison in general use, P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro will win almost every single shot.
Evidence: I have both the previous 20 series flagships (mentioned) - I noticed each shot on the P30's front cam was useless in comparison, blurry, very low resolved detail, with dark shadows under the eyes overly accentuated (whether you have dark circles or not, they will be over emphasised vs the 2 mentioned devices) which = the perfect recipe for an underwhelming shot every single time.
I went back twice to swap my P30 Pro for a new one at the store within the first 14 days.
Result = No change. Same level of Blur in your normal use case selfies.
The scientific analysis of the issue:
The problem is a fixed focus, which is no problem at all if the range is correct, but in this case it isn't.
- you can test it yourselves, hold your phone 1ft from your face and take a pic, then 1.5ft - 2 ft and so on, you will start to realise that the focus has been tuned to an arms length - a shot which 90% of the time you will not be taking - unless you WANT the world to see that you are taking a selfie.
Is there a benefit of this?
-Of course there is, this captures far better background detail when compared to other phones (P20 Pro & Mate 20 Pro in this case). However, this is a double edged sword, since 99% of the time in a selfie, you want the subject -yourself- to be prioritised over all else in this type of shot.
-It seems this tuning has been done to favour group selfie shots, since the distance required for a group shot is a full arms length - so this is most likely the reason for the prioritised focal range.
But make no mistake, anything closer than an arms length, the P20 Pro, Mate 20 Pro, and even the Iphone XS Max is far sharper(just tested during this writeup). For full arm length selfies shots, group selfies and background detail the P30 Pro is sharper (in the distance rather than on the subject).
So there you have it, objective, repeatable shots which you can try yourself.
Get at me with your comments. P.s. Let's not talk about software updates as I'm on 9.1.0.193 (4 months in from the release).

Came to the same conclusion months ago, arms length or nothing. Not that I'm going to lose any sleep over it as I've probably took no more than 3 selfies since I've had the phone.
The front camera is pretty bad. Image wise you do need to hold the phone a certain distance to get a good image.
Those saying it's better than the s10 plus I have no idea how they can say that. Selfie camera is pretty much the only thing that Samsung smashes Huawei in.
The bigger issue I have is that it can take up to 5 seconds between pushing the shutter and the picture being taken.
Only happens with the selfie cam and it's because of software updates as this was never a problem on day one.
But yeah selfie cam on the p30 is weak. Very much so. It's up to you if the rest of the device makes up for it which for me it does

Exactly, so in this respect the phone failed majorly - we now have a device that we won't use to capture ourselves, personal memories- something that's a crucial reason to buy a newer phone in the first place. (I'm still carrying and running a 20 series device for this reason). Hugely annoying.

Most of the time this delay is a sharpening and processing - this usually makes the photo far better so that's not a problem as such, but this delay still does very little for the front camera when compared to the previous 20 series devices.
All in all - the front camera doesn't deserve to be in the presence of the rest of the hardware - since overall the device is fool proof from all angles (hardware wise) and the front camera doesn't live up to this standard.
The minimum required (expected) competence of each component is that which objectively beats the previous generation product, and in this instance, 90% of the expected use of the front cam, this just isn't the case.
