Pixel 5 v Samsung S20 + - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Anyone got any true comparison to the camera quality of these 2 phones ? I've always had Pixels literally from the Pixel 2 onwards but I'm not convinced with the camera innovation on the Pixel 5 in fact if anything I'm finding the pics rather dull even compared to my 4XL and my 3XL.

Compared to my wife's Note 20 5G my P5 takes way better photos. I have tested both side by side. I think the cameras are similar on the S20fe and Note 20.
Not to mention the P5 has a far superior OS and better update support.

Are the Samsung pics oversaturated etc as normal ?

Not really but you can tell they look different. I prefer how the P5 pics come out

i have s20+ and p5. samsung still sucks in the camera department. about 1/5 photos from my s20 look "pretty" good. they just can't get processing right.
my p5 always takes amazing photos.
there is no contest.

I'm switching from my current Mate 20 Pro to the 1/12 S10+. The main, and pretty much only reason is storage: as I need Dual SIM, I just can't expand my 128GB to anything more, unless I use something OTG-related. God bless this Hybrid SIM slot stupidity. I'll miss some great Mate 20 Pro stuff I guess, such as
- battery. I seriously doubt I'll get something better there, there are already voices around stating the S10+ eats battery like a mad when used with 2 SIMs
- IR sensor. Old tech, but so handy sometimes
- Face recognition. The S10+ is supposed to use something similar to what the Mate 10 Pro got at a later point, nowhere as powerful as the Mate 20's 3D facial recognition. The Mate 20 Pro detects my face even with zero light, the Mate 10 Pro didn't and I guess the 10+ won't either.
- I'm not a great fan of those ugly, giant, round Samsung icons, but themes are not that far away...

sounds like the Mate20 is a much better advantage to a s10+. Since storage is the only issue, have you considered cloud storage? I can't think what could take up 128gb, but then again I don't have big file sized games running.
I tested the phones, S10 Plus, Mate 20 Pro (I have it) and S10:
- Huawei display (boe) is more colored than s10 plus/s10 even on Vivid colors settings for Samsung!!! (for ex. S8 has more saturated colors)
- Camera: both cameras (front and rear) are much worse than M20 Pro. I took same pictures with both and compared on phones displays and also on 4K QLED TV Samsung/LG 4K TV. M20 Pro is the winner from far, I don't know how they get 109 points on dxomark.....Front facing camera got more details on M20 Pro, both phones on 0 Beauty Face Mode. Also the zoom mode is more detalied on M20 Pro. I didn't test the video recording.
- Speed: both phones are the same but the S10 plus was empty....

DXO is not a reliable source in my opinion, many people actually stated the same thing.
Even in unbox therapy, he stated that the selfie camera wasn't that great.
I've seen the s10 in the store and wasn't impressed, will try to test it more
As expected almost everyone is believing the hype from Sammy. It has been like that ever since until first adopters starts complaining here and there. DX0 rating means nothing to me and has never influenced my decision to buy the phone I want. S10-series punch holes looks ugly to me as well as those terrible looking icons. I prefer using the stock launcher all the time so those icons are an absolute turn off to me. They say EMUI is ugly but look at Sammy's latest UI its as if they are following Xiaomi's footsteps as far as UI design is concerned. No pun intended.
The funny part? Mine mate 20 x with many apps installed and working in background, was faster than demo GS10 with no app
I've seen videos where the S10+ battery is much much better than the M20 Pro.
But I share my concerns about the face unlock, it is one of the best features of the M20 Pro.

I never judge battery from those videos, as real world usage is quite different.
When i had my galaxy s7, a lot of the time, Android System consumed the battery and the SOT got worse with Nougat.
Never happened on the Mate 9 or 20 Pro/X.
I think the batery is almost identical,i have 7,5-8h sot in a full day of usage

Am I the only one disappointed with low light & indoors capabilities of this camera?

Am I the only one disappointed with low light & indoors capabilities of this camera?
So disappointed with the quality of indoor and low light pictures produced by my S10+. I have always been a Samsung guy, never missed on an S and Note model, had the P20 Pro last year then briefly the Mate 20 Pro but replaced it with the Note 9 due to the trash display on it. I held on to my Note 9 promising myself that Samsung will definitely deliver this time around and give us a good low light shooter with the S10 and also after the news about the bright night shot leaked out. But nope, I was wrong, Samsung still can't figure out how to give us a camera that can compete with the Pixel and the Huawei's in low light conditions, indoor photography, and moving objects.*
I love this phone, hands down the best phone I've ever had, but if Samsung doesn't release an update to address this and add a night sight or night mode like feature, then I am ditching it for the upcoming P30 Pro(if Huawei sorts out the display issues). I have two kids, and you can imagine how challenging it is for me taking pictures of them while playing and indoors, it's a big deal for me.*
Again, crossing my fingers Samsung addresses these issues, or developers finally find a way to give us exynos owners a reliable Gcam port that has a functioning night sight mode in it.
Camera sucks when it comes to photographing people. Period.

Sadly, this only works on the snapdragon version, I doubt we'll ever get a fully working port for exynos S10 phones.
same . I am using Mate 20 X then buy S10+ . Thinking about selling S10+ and keep the M20X cause of camera quality. After 1 year, Samsung only add 1 more wide angle camera, and still bad quality. I think they bring that wide angle cam from A series
am sure there''s 100s that are also but love other features to complain, but am with you just like everyone mentions love the build quality but damn work on the camera software instead of adding more lenses..

Galaxy S10 Camera sensors

So, i have been doing some research for my youtube channel lately about the s10 cameras. I own the European S10 with exynos 9820 cipset and Isocell camera sensors. I know that Samsung used dual sourcing again with their phones, and some models out there use Sony sensors,, most probably snapdragon 855 variants. The question is, what sony sensors do they use? Is it the same imx 345 from the s9? My s10 uses the SLSI_SAK2L4 isocell main sensor, opposed to the SLSI_SAK2L3 sensor i had on my note 9. I am asking this because i get very good photos, even compared to the pixel 3 and mate 20 pro but i know many of you are unhappy with the s10 cameras. So, what sony sensor does your s10 have? (Use aida64 and go to devices to find out)

So, on the US variant you have (maybe) the same back camera sensors, but a sony selfie camera. But from what i heard, there are phones with sony main back sensors too. How is your experience with the camera?
BTW, here are the screenshots from my exynos variant.
I have Exynos S10+ and photo quality is noticeably worse than my Note 9 Exynos. Photos come out overexposed(too bright) with inaccurate colors(black looks gray), the sharpness is terrible as well which makes picture look blurry. It can all be fixed by Google's GCam APK camera software, but unfortunately GCam does not fully work on Exynos models, it works fine on Snapdragon model S10s.
I have ISOCell sensors for both front and back camera, just like my Note 9.
with gcam the photos are so much better, full sun light samsung cam app is fine.

In my experience, in bright lights, S10 does capture more vibrant colors than Note9/S9, but when there is low light environment like bar or a room in night time, the sharpness goes haywire and colors look washed out. I can post a couple comparison pics.
Check out this Anandtech review from yesterday, they found the Snapdragon S10 camera images superior to Exynos. Even the DAC for audio 3.5mm jack is screwed up on Exynos. I may just get the stupid US locked Bootloader S10 until Samsung fixes these problems on Exynos.
Link to Anandtech review below, it is all accurate from my experience. The battery issue on Exynos is resolved however and now it meets or beats Snapdragon on battery front.

You speak right of my soul. The post processing is a disaster. Just take a normal picture from, idk, a landscape. When you then go into gallery to view the image, it needs like 2-3 seconds to "optimize" it. After this, the image seems to be good at first sight, but if you just slightly zoom into the photo, you can see how unbelievable blurred and unsharp it is. At least unbelievable for a ~1000€ smartphone. My OnePlus 6 made way better pictures. I'm very dissapointed.
Why samsung why?
Ok, Im terrified by my s10 camera. I have the SD S10 with sony IMX374 front camera and the Isocell back cameras, and the pictures are just stupid. My iphone 7 and Google pixel used to take better photos... Photos have less details, less sharpness and they look grainy and soft. The worst part: when I try to take a photo, they look nice before I shoot, in the preview, but then I check the gallery and there...ITS NOTHING LIKE WHAT I SAW IN THE PREVIEW... The photo becomes blurred and lose details.

I also have the Pixel4XL and am tempted to go for the S21 ultra either the 256gb or the 512mb version as I feel the 128gb version would be a waster of money with all that 4k videos an 12 bit raw photos.
I also buy my phones for camera and love the fact that you can get close for macro with the wide angle lens and the 3x and 10x zoom look appealing as well.

Samsung photo processing can't still beat the pixel one.
For me, I'm over the "Ultra/Max Flagship". I don't need/want to spend $1200 even with 0% financing. I would rather spend $700 every two years for 3 new phones ($2100) than $1200 every 3 years for 2 new phones ($2400). I'm 99% sure I'll get the Pixel 6.
I originally bought the s20 ultra for the camera. The photos from it are great but I also brought along my mirrorless camera for anything worthy of photographing. I have grown to dislike how heavy and big the phone is through the years. I am now back to using my P4xl and enjoying it.

General My father bought the S21 Ultra and i was impressed camera wise...

This is just my statement and opinion.
I'm going to try and be honest here. Me as a Mi 11 Ultra owner I was impressed and a bit jealous despite the 300-400€ difference when using my father's S21 Ultra(exynos) in 2 aspects.
One is the screen brightness with direct sunlight. i thought the all 1700nits would "shine true" but i got duped. The visibility of the S21 Ultra is much better, both using max brightness sunlight. I am not sure if Xiaomi activated the already enabled direct sunlight option, i had read somewhere that the brightness reaches better results on S21U but that's another topic.
Two is the camera...
I got mind blown when i bought the mi 11 Ultra and i got mind blown again about the quality of the zoom on S21U, without even going past 10x.
The S21U with the 3x and 10x camera app smooth change between lenses and the sharpness of the zoom photos during live preview. A more Mature camera app indeed and the stabilization of the zoom camera by focusing on the object and not having to have a firm hand... wow!
I couldn't test it during nightshots cause i was with him for a brief moment, but that is what i could have "won" in a way, but Mi11U enhances the nightshots photos after the photo is taken, not that much during live preview.
Not to discourage other Xiaomi Fans out there but Xiaomi has indeed been lacking the transparency and focus of the Software.
Samsung July patch notes note said that was made some improvements to the camera performance
Another thing is that Xiaomi MIUI patches notes are the same across all the devices and not specific of the model. Like generic and uninteresting, you don't even know if they are making adjustments to the camera app on a specific model.
But i'm going to stop with all the blathering for now.

You have to read the carefully the post i made mate.
I said on top, its my opinion that S21U is better at zoom, even if DXOmark biases or unbiases only grants 98 points against 131.
Benchmarks are benchmarks and DXOmark has a controversy of favoring Huawei and Xiaomi phones (you can read it in other places) and also Software improvements are not taken in consideration. The software released of S21Ultra had alot of issues but they fixed according to what i know and this topic was made now cause my father only bought it now.
Beside i don't look at one site and be done with it. You see alot of Youtubers talk about zoom pictures being better on S21Ultra
Also do you wonder why DXOmark never shares the specific version number of the software they test even if you ask them? talk about transparency...
And again with the Dxomark scores on Screen. Xiaomi talks about 1700nits against the Samsung 1500nits and yet i saw major difference with my eyes.
I bought the Mi11ultra because i love MIUI and this phone has alot of other functionally that other don't all in one.
I won't buy S21U. i already have purchase my device, this is a post to take in consideration, thats all.
I'm not in blind love of my MI11ultra.

Let's hope Xiaomi will release better software soon or custom roms to fix it. And well, when i have a S21U in my own hands i will compare them.

I don't know guys what kind of shots you need to do with a camera, Mi 11 Ultra camera to me seems incredible and that's enough, if I want better shot I buy a proper camera in my opinion
In my little and personal opinion, Xiaomi fits outstanding hardware in its phones but it clearly loses on software and optimization which I think is a more difficult task than gathering hardware. If Samsung would ship its phone with the kind of sensors Mi 11 ultra has, they might outperform Mi 11 ultra easily. Even Xiaomi's flagships such as Mi 11 ultra have outdated security updates and buggy user interface such as its dark mode; I'm living with a phone whose dark mode bugs make me change homescreen icon layout twice daily in order to get my widgets and google feed follow the device's theme. Mind it, I payed $1000 for this "luxury" and such is the experience of it. I envy S21 ultra users using their phones with the most recent Android security patch installed.
Im sorry if I hurt someone here by saying this.
I debated a lot between the two phone. Went with Xiaomi because :
1. I can use gcam (the camera will improve with time). This is not available with the Exynos S21, or very limited.
2. Better wide angle lens.
What i really miss, and in my opinion it's the biggest flaw with the Mi 11 Ultra camera: Macro. Basically doesn't exist. What is even worse is the fact that cropping from the main lens at 50MP yields much better macro results that using the dedicated macro mode. I mean...common Xiaomi.
So I bought an external 100mm macro lens, but it doesn't fit the M11U because the camera bump is too thick :/

Is the Snapdragon version just a single sim? I looked myself but I'm sure only the Exynos had dual SIM but this was before it launched but still interested to know.

Now that you meantion I also tried experimenting with "macro" cause the option is there and its on the Ultrawide and it can't seem to focus, i get better results with telescope lens while keeping some distance from target. but still lacks.
Xiaomi said that they didn't place a macro camera cause they found a way to use 2 lens into 1, the Ultrawide.
I wonder if gcam has a option to improve focus on the ultrawide and if it's only xiaomi camera software that it's not working properly.

You're limited by the focal range of the lense.
A ultra wide macro would likely need an attachment ie extension tube/lense for it to work. Because you don't have access to the primary lense not sure how well that work.

True, but the silly thing is that you can just take a photo with the main lens and 50MP mode and crop. You still get high res photo and the macro is FAR better than what you get with the dedicated macro mode.
They should just change the dedicated macro mode to be a crop of 50MP main camera.

I tried it now and your right, if i zoom in on main camera without switching to the telephoto i get much better results with macro.
Btw have you guys notice that if you do close up photos the mi cam only switches to the telephoto at exactly 9.5X? i used my finger on top of the telephoto lens to check this out

It will do that if the distance is closer than the minimum focus distance of the 5x lens, or when there is not a lot of light. You can always change to Pro mode (with auto settings); to force the 5x lens .

Is the Snapdragon version just a single sim? I looked myself but I'm sure only the Exynos had dual SIM but this was before it launched but still interested to know.

You can get a dual sim snapdragon s21u in some markets
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Dual Sim 5G G9980

It also supports e-sim so you may be able to use multiple sim cards even on the single sim variant if you're carrier has e-sim available

Well but that Iphone in 2021 still performs at 60hz lol while the Samsung costs 1200£ without charger and giving you Exynos. So any phone has its flows

I don't like apple products or iPhones in general but the camera and screen quality didn't look noticeably worse when tested side by side
