Question I'm still on the fence with the S21 Ultra...do you think there will be ROMS in the future? - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Hello everyone, so I have either had a google device or a OnePlus and am used to the clean OS. I decided to go with the S21 Ultra due to the reviews and I do enjoy it, but I don't at the same time.
I must applaud Samsung for all their "extra" features they put in UI 3.1, but for me, I don't use any of them and prefer the stock/vanilla Android. I actually think my old OnePlus 7T was snappier then the 21 Ultra.
Another thing, I was never a fan of the curved screen. I ALWAYS put a tempered glass screen protector on my phones (they were always flat) and its saved me A TON of times! I got one for this phone that's curved but its so thin and has air bubbles that it bothers me.
Do you guys think there eventually be Roms for the device?

I'm also a fan of Google phones in particular due to their clean Android interface design. Samsung just has more options in the settings menu, however, I only have to go into the settings menu like once or twice per week - so that doesn't bother me at all.
But with that said, this S21U phone is definitely snappier than both my old Pixel 3XL and one of my family member's OnePlus 7T. And the speed jump, in my case, could be a result of having a Snapdragon 888 and using the 120hz refresh rate (whereas those other two phones have slower chips and only support 60hz refresh rates).
But yeah, based on you asking about custom ROMs, I can tell that you're not in North America and have an Exynos version of the phone (as any Snapdragon devices in NA don't support official bootloader unlocks and so you'll have to pay over $100 to unlock your phone in the potentially distant future). If that's the case (you have an Exynos), then yes, you will be getting custom ROMs in the near future. But if you're actually in NA, then no; you won't be getting any custom ROMs for quite a while.
But if you do have a Exynos version of the phone, then that would be rather interesting. Everyone online is continuously saying how the Exynos version performed better than the Snapdragon version in some benchmark tests. But it'd be pretty funny (and highly unfortunate) if the Exynos phone performs far worse in actual usage situations when compared to the Snapdragon phone. I'm already very well aware of the Exynos phones getting much hotter than the Snapdragon phones, but I'm not sure about the actual usage performance difference yet.
Oh, and one more thing! To comment on the glass, definitely beware of the S21 Ultra's glass! It's super, super fragile and isn't just the new, Victus Gorilla Glass that they said that it was (so it can scratch and shatter extremely easily as a result).

Oh wow! Thank you so much for the write up! I actually have the Snapdragon model (Canadian) and thought the bootloader lock wasn't an issue anymore... darn it...
Ya I totally agree with everything you said about the phone, great phone, way faster then my oneplus 7t, but I think I'm still selling it.
Thank you for your response

If you want a quality curved screen protector go with this one. It fits perfectly and there are no air bubbles. A UV light cures the liquid adhesive. It's pretty much a knock off of the whitestone dome glass screen protector.

How are finger prints on this? Cause I've got the dome glass and it is stupid expensive but damn, finger prints are almost non existant or come of real easy and it feels glassier than a very glassy like material made of very glas like stuff
But I'm glad other companies are coming out with their own

Can you comment on the fingerprints compared to the whitestone?
Thanks!

No SD card slot. A missing keystone feature that greatly limits the usability and flexibility of the phone.

Galaxy S10's UD fingerprint reader won't work with screen protectors

Troubling news for those of you who want to keep a screen protector on your phones for some extra peace of mind. According to the latest rumor, the Galaxy S10's under-display fingerprint reader won't work with screen protectors.
The vanilla Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ will make use of a new in-display fingerprint tech. It is believed that they will introduce the ultrasonic fingerprint technology that tends to be more reliable, faster and more accurate than the currently existing optical fingerprint tech.

I read that the models will come with a preapplied screenprotector, so this shouldn't be too big of an issue

If thatss the case then its brilliant news.
I would have preferred if Samsung made their own screen protector to support their new device.
This kinda suck as I like to use a matte protector to avoid fingerprints and smudges. What I lose in brightness and clarity, I gain back in smooth swiping.

Those are some speculations so far in an imaginary world reflected in so called "articles". Would be a nice add-on though if it actually happens.

I'm quite sure Sammy will use Ultrasonic modules only that other OEMs should have also used instead of Optical ones imo.
Personally, I stopped caring about a screen protector since S6 edge days as to get one that works flawlessly is near impossible with those curves without issues and importing something like whitestone dome is not my worth especially when Samsung keeps giving onetime screen replacement offers in my country. Also, I enjoy the screen way more than with a protector on . Having all that said, I'll be happier if Samsung actually ships with pre-applied protector as it would speak "quality".
I don't think that using glass when protector with luca glue can possibly interfere with ultrasonic sensor.
you are basically add extra mm of material.
I can only imagine the headache it brought for those 3rd party screen protector providers who already manufactured their products.

How about getting a clean cloth with lint-free feature?
With how the company in question phrased their post, it sounds to me like the company was speaking about a screen protector which is part of the case, not one which is attached to the phone, and definitely not any kind of tempered glass which you would attached to the phone. Additionally, as other's have pointed out in all likelihood the company did not use material which would support the ultrasonic fingerprint tech. They likely just made it out of the same stuff as they had before.
I can see any plastic or rubbery screen protector as well as any which do not have a continuous connection to the phone as not working with the ultrasonic tech as the sound waves could change too much in the transitions between materials (and air).

Not everyone has the chance to carry such with them all the time, especially when with a matte glass screen protector you can do the same thing with your shirt with no issue.
I read phone will come with a pre installed protector but I guess we will have to wait and see.
The Whitestone protector with the loca will work. you get 2 for $60. s10 and s10+ are the same price. Regular TGSP's wont work because of the air gap according to reports. Because whitestone uses loca, they will work. According to whitestone themselves, i quote "ONLY SOLUTION FOR ULTRASONIC FINGERPRINT – Advanced Liquid Optical Clear Adhesive (LOCA) Technology prevents micro spaces in between device and Dome Glass which makes only solution for S10’s new ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor." Whitestone was already the best choice for any curved edge phone IMO, there is no better TGSP. I've used plenty. They're just so darn expensive. Much cheaper than a screen replacement though..

Well I guess I'll get this then I always have a screen protector on my phone and back when we had HTC's we got turned on to tempered glass by Zagg and it was like 40 bucks but so good and worth it and when the 7 Edge came out and we got those every since cause of the curved edges no good ones in glass. I use Invisisheild by Zagg now and my husband for the 1st time doesn't have one on his Note 8 and I told him he needs one on this phone cause of the fps And If it's really as good as people say $60 for 2 isn't a bad price I pay like 25 for my Zagg only problem is I would want a professional to put it on cause if my husband messes up I'll be upset LOL!

Those should work just fine. The issue with the glass screen protectors are that there is typically a small air gap between the screen and protector making it difficult to get a good reading on your fingerprint.

Fully flat tempered glass for Note 20 Ultra

As we all know, Note 20 Ultra still has a curve screen(same is the newer S21 Ultra). However, has anybody every tried a slightly "smaller" (Note 20 Ultra has a 6.9" while S21 Ultra has a 6.8") but fully flat tempered glass on it and see if it'll work or not?
I have couple LG V60 tempered glass(V60 screen is 6.8") and I definitely would like to give it a try, especially considering that the front camera is at the same(relatively speaking) location.
Just want to know whether anybody has attempted this or not. Or should I look for even smaller tempered glass(next thing that comes to mind is S21+ tempered glass, which is fully flat at 6.6") instead?
Please share your experience and/or opinion. Thank you very much.

Screen protector (tempered glass)

Hello
Learned in the past my smartphone often lands on the ground.
Are you using / can recommend a good tempered glass for that model?
Wonder if it brings a good protection from cracks at all.
You need a case with good corner and face plant protection (flat surfaces). The case is the first and best defense against damage.
I use the Zizo Bolt on my 10+. Zero damage after around a dozen 2-4 foot drops onto concrete.

This variant includes a tempered glass protector which you may need to leave off. My variant comes with none.
I use the wet apply plastic Gorilla IQ Sheild. Zero damage to my big corner hitting, face plant happy phone after over 1.5 years.

Already using Spigen Ultra Hybrid. I'm rather lf protection from cracks caused by falling which i heard of glass is better than plastic.
the LK tempered glass protectors had the best reviews, no complaints from me either.

it does come up smaller than the total screen (so it fits with cases), it covers the used part of the screen but not the bezels.

You can't be face planting a phone with no case. High impact G's can destroy chipsets, mobos, other internal parts and mounts.

Good.
My 10+ survived a fall onto a rough piece of an aluminum angle from about 3 feet. It marred the factory protector but not the glass. Hit on the curved portion too, most of the impact was probably on the concrete though.
Screen protectors are mostly to prevent marring and scratches from sand and grit. They are a pain to put on although they may provide more impact protection or... not.
Glass is witchy stuff.
Neither a true solid nor liquid it is subject to the laws of fluid hydraulics at times. It can behave in seemingly bizarre ways. Anyone who ever done work as a glazer can verify this.

Screen protectors

Have been rolling with the white stone dome and obviously love the feel but lost the functionality of my fingerprint sensor. Also butchered the application so whites look bad because of the dust underneath and whatnot.
I've been getting harassed with some screen protectors especially this Deawi Privacy/ screen protector . I'm open to a change if it'll protect from scratches and get fingerprint back .
I am using the amfilms one, and the fingerprint sensor is actually quite good

Thanks dude. I appreciate the feedback . Just spent an hour and 30 minutes picking off my white stone dome that was cracked and the application process didn't go well so there were all kinds of dust spots underneath. . . The one I was going to apply ended up being for the small note. Rookie mistake
np, just make sure you follow the instructions with the small metal weight on the fingerprint sensor
I have been using the Ringke Dual Easy Wing film since I got my 20 Ultra.
Dropped my phone face down on rocks, tore the screen protcector but no damage to the screen.
No issues with the fingerprint reader at all. Spen is hit or miss and can leave slight indents in the film if pressed too had.
Want to switch to temperated glass, but my note 9 left a bad taste in my mouth with tempered glass popping off and dust getting under it.

So, really hating tempered glass on this device. Had good luck for a few weeks with a fresh install of tempered glass by white stone. But it quickly degenerated into working 0% of the time.. at home and tried a Chinese brand I thought was going to be worth trying after they peppered me with ads on Facebook and it was awful. Doesn't have enough adhesive to even get it close enough to the screen that regular finger presses register.
The idea of a wet apply is growing on me because I think at least it will not make my fingerprint sensor useless. Maybe I will try yours but getting a little tired of thinking money into protecting this thing. It's naked right now and I love that the fp sensor actually works but I feel like I'm playing with fire .
I had whitestone dome - developed a very fine crack across the glass - decided to replace with the spare whitestone glass and buggered the installation (first time ever after installations on many devices over the years) switch to Rinke Dual Wing 4 weeks ago and extremely impressed. Finger Print scanner works perfectly - any indentation you cause will disappear with the film relaxes. Highly recommend.
BTW never had a finger scanner issue with whitestone dome glass - it worked flawlessy.
Rinke extremely easy to put and get rid of dust as you do it.
I installed ESR Gear's tempered glass screen protector and a clear case, and camera protector for that matter, in August 2020 and never been happier: no dust, no air bubbles, fingerprint sensor works and one can see the phone in its original - Mystic Bronze - color.

Accessories Review : amFilm S23 base tempered glass screen protector

I just got my base s23 and was looking for a tempered glass screen protector. Frankly I can't stand curved screens on phones. I previously had one and used the tempered glass with UV light and while it worked okay, I always used too much of the glue and it slipped into the buttons and speaker.
So for the new S line, I opted for the plan and simple S23 that packs everything I want.
I looking for screen protectors, I have had good luck with amFilm on S10, S20, and S21 phones.
In luck, they had a S23 for the base phone and comes with a simplified application tray to make it super easy to install.
Just had to follow these steps
1. wipe the screen with provided wet wipe
2. wipe with microfiber cloth
3. use FULL size sticker, no kidding the sticker is bigger then the phone to avoid missing dust with those small stickers
4. remove film from the tempered glass thats inside the tray
5. place the tray over the phone
6. swipe from top to down to let the protector stick to the phone screen.
7. remove the tray.
Done.
In one try, it came out great.
+ centered perfectly
+ unique tray makes it easier then eye balling the placement. well worth the couple bucks extra.
+ case friendly
+ smooth as glass (of course)
+ reasonably priced
+ lifetime warranty
+ amFilm is well known, high reviews, and been around for a long time
- no negatives, time will tell.
Hoping it lasts. They do have a lifetime warranty that covers 1 replacement.
It does include protector for the cameras, but I am using the Onyx case from Ringke that already has pre cut outs to protect the camera.
This is the one I purchased from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BMG2VV4N/
attached are pictures of it installed on base s23 and one inside Ringke Onyx S23 case ( perfect 1mm on the sides, can hardly tell its on and still has enough room not to interfere)
Maybe a dumb question, but how does it handle fingerprint detection?
I've heard a rumor that Glass can interfere with it, and should opt to silicon based instead.
I just put mine on, works perfectly. The S22 and prior never worked well with a glass protector, the 23 is perfect.
