Work Profile No Caller ID - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Hi,
Not sure if this is a Pixel or Android issue. I'm using the Pixel 5 and my company has Intune installed work profile. I can search my work contacts from the personal contact app for calls and messenger. When calls come in I have two issues, most of the time Caller ID will display the phone number but not the callers name. It seems like out of 10 calls, I may get one or two with the name displayed from my work contacts. The other issue that happens is I'll hear the phone ring but I don't get the notification so I can answer the call or see whos calling until the second or third ring.
Phone software is all stock and up to date. Google launcher, Google contacts and phone app, Google Messenger, etc. Tried restarting the phone, no luck. Would like to know if this is a common problem or an issue with my phone.
Work profile using Intune and MS Office 365 apps. Thanks.

SMS Client

Has anybody tried getting SMS on your nook? I tried getting Google Voice to work but can't remember specifically but I ran into some roadblocks getting it to work. It was looking for local phone services or something. Has anybody got at SMS to work on the nook. I think it would be nice to send and receive text messages.
this would be awesome
I got Google voice am to work but I'm not sure how.
Magically transmitted across the interwebs by my kickass NookColor!
Google voice works great on NC for SMS
Thanks, I have to retry this. It was late when I was installing, could have missed something.
Make sure you have a Google voice number not just the account. I had to pick a gv number in order for texts to work.
Works great here too.
Sent from my Nook Color.
Google voice working here. Yes, make sure you have chosen to get a gv. Number and not just using your cell phone number with gv
Google voice downloaded from the market works on my daughter's nook. She can send and receive texts. Is there a way to get the contacts to show up? When she tries to compose, it seems the only option is to manually type in the number. I can't find a way to access an address book from within google voice. Am I missing something?
Thanks!
How do you get a number for. The nook.
I have gv on my phone already but how do I assign a number to my nook.

Just use the same credentials. You should receive messages on both devices. I have my iPhone 4 and nook set up for that. Unless you want to deal with another number there is no reason to create a new one.

Has anyone tried getting WhatsApp to work? It needs to send a confirmation sms to your specified number, I'm trying to find a way to bypass that portion. Google Voice works great in the mean time, but Whatsapp is great for sending multimedia.
I am sensing a little confusion here...
Remember folks, true SMS messaging requires cellular service, as it uses the cellular radio to send packets of information to the cell towers and through the service providers.
The only way to go about text messaging without a cellular radio on a device is to use a VOIP service (Voice Over IP) that also allows text-messaging. I'm actually not familiar with Skype at all, so I'm not sure if they also use phone-numbers, but with Google Voice, you have to have a phone number, which is one that is provided to you (you get to choice of available numbers).
The only other option for messaging over text, other than using a VOIP service that offers a texting feature, is to use an instant-messaging service (i.e. AIM).
Agreed. I completely understand the sms bit, which is why google voice works. But Whatsapp is also data based, which is why its so great. However it still requires an activation step but sending an sms to your number which obviously cant be done. However I'm curious of anyone knows of a way to bypass the activation portion altogether?

cant you tell it to send a sms to your google voice number?
I can't seem to get this to work. I DLed the google voice app from the market, it walks me through set up, I log in with the same gmail account that my gvoice # is assigned to, but then it only shows my mobile number, not my gvoice #. I select add a # and then the screen just stays put....nothing happens. I have to press n to go back to my home launcher.
Any hints?
Has anyone got a contract list to work with google voice?

what do you guys mean by this? I can't get mine to work. Like the other guy said, i downloaded from market, selected my mobile phone number (when I try to add a phone number it doesn't work). I can send text messages that send from my GV number but I can't receive any messages. I can't receive any messages on my mobile phone either, for that matter.
Any ideas?
I don't have Google Voice installed on my mobile phone, but that shouldn't matter, right?
Thanks!
GTalkSMS / TalkMyPhone
I've been using a neat app called 'GTalkSMS' (available on Market) that allows me to use Google Talk to send and receive SMS from my phone number. GTalkSMS works great when I'm at desktop and is also quite serviceable from the Nook.
You may have to first set up a separate Jabber chat account for the phone (if you're using Google Talk as the chat program). After that step, I've used it for:
- sending & receiving SMSes (after forgetting my phone at home/other side of the house (lol));
- looking up contact info on the phone (includes email & physical addresses as well as phone numbers);
- locating my phone with GPS coordinates and by setting it to ring;
- writing on my phone/sending links or clipboard content...etc.
I don't have Google Voice locally, so I'm not sure how it compares -- let me know!
TextPlus seems to work. (;

I've used GTalkSMS and Google Voice, and I prefer Google Voice, only because I don't have to set up a Jabber chat account to make it work, and it allows me to use the same number for SMS on all my devices. But if you don't have a Google Voice number, GTalkSMS is the way to go!

Android "L"ollipop Google voice flaw/error

I updated to the latest preview of Android L to do a little testing on a few apps that i have in the works. While using the phone for dev reasons, i noticed that the ROM was stable enough for everyday use, so i decided to install Google voice, hangouts messenger and setup Google voice to be my voice-mail of choice. This is where i noticed a issue, when i receive a phone call to my Google voice number, everything works great, hangouts app picks up the call, if i decline the call it goes directly to Google voice-mail. Perfect.. The issue is when people (for some reason) call my normal cell number it will ring and go to the normal dialer, but when i decline the call, it'll ring the hangout's messenger app.
Doing some digging i found that Google setup voice-mail a little different between kitkat (and before) to lollipop. There use to be an option to send calls straight to Voice-mail (whatever is set to default) when you'r busy(declined call) or you don't answer(missed call), now there is no option for this, just different options of numbers to forward too. This wouldn't be an issue using normal voice-mail, but when using Google voice it now forwards the calls to your Google voice number when you decline a phone call from your normal cell number... Besides having two voice-mail numbers, i do not see a work around..
Anyone else seeing this issue and have a solution?
Hi,
We do not need a new thread for this, we are trying to keep all L related issues to either this thread here or a good place could be the thread you created here until it is officially released as some of these bugs/flaws could be fixed by then.

SMS and MMS issues with BLU Vivo XL on metroPCS

Hello,
I am using a BLU Vivo XL with metroPCS service and I am having a two MMS issues: 1) Every MMS is duplicated, and 2) MMS service is very unreliable over WiFi. Also, I have 1 sms issue where my messages from some contacts do not thread/aggreagate correctly. For example, I send a sms to ContactA and when they respond, it is in a new thread, I can then continue the conversation in that new thread.
I have updated my APN information to the t-mobile settings. I have had a "phone reset" by a metroPCS CSR over chat. Any ideas on how to rectify these issues?
Similar Problem
I have a similar problem on AT&T. I get duplicate group messages while using google messenger. It only happens with group messages and is fine with normal MMS. Sorry I was unable to help, but you are not alone.

I'm trying to use my BLU Vivo XL with Chomp Messenger (AT&T). It seems to work other than it won't play any notification sounds no matter which one I choose. It's not blinking the message led either.
I was having the same issue on T-Mobile, my solution was to go through each contact and make sure there were no spaces in any contact numbers. Example: 1 (123) 456-7890 would give me problems, but 1(123)456-7890 worked just fine.

Exactly the same with me on AT&T. Any time someone sends me an MMS, I get 2 pictures instead of just one. Crazy. I also get the issue where I send a SMS, and then when they reply, it starts a new thread instead of appearing in the one I just sent. Weird. Let me know if you figure this out.
I seem to have found the CAUSE of this problem, but I have yet to find a solution. I had the same problem as the OP when receiving MMS. Instead of getting one picture, I would always get 2. No matter who was sending to me. Also, as the OP stated, "messages from some contacts do not thread/aggreagate correctly. For example, I send a sms to ContactA and when they respond, it is in a new thread, I can then continue the conversation in that new thread."
I remembered that when I got this phone, I replaced the stock messaging app with Google Messenger (I thought the stock messenger was lacking). I had a hunch that the 2 messaging apps were somehow conflicting with each other. So I deleted google messenger and had my daughter send me a picture. Boom. Problem fixed. I received only one picture from her using the stock messenger app. So I re-installed the Google Messenger app from the play store and had her send me the same picture again. This time, I received TWO pictures. I have no idea how to fix this behavior as you cannot "disable" the stock messenger app. I probably could try a different messenger app other than Google Messenger, but that's the one that I like. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: I deleted Google Messenger and tried a different messenger just to test, and it worked as it should. So it must me some kind of incompatibility with Google Messenger, and I'm guessing other messenger apps.

Yup, there appears to be a non-stock messenger app problem. Both Google Messenger and Textra were resulting in duplicate MMS.
I saw this thread and thought I would jump on here real quick. My GF also has metro PCS and she keeps trying to swap the default messaging client out with say GO SMS pro. And whenever she gets a new text she doesnt get any audible notifications. And the LED doesnt light up so she has to manually check her phone all the time. Has anyone else experienced that? Have a fix?

Phone type: Blu Life One X on Android 5.1 (whatever happened to Blu promises for a droid version update? Word of caution: Don't believe Blue marketing 'promises'. Nice phone, but don't buy it unless its the OS you are willing to live with until your next phone)
Ever since google began sending love notes about its texting app becoming obsolete and I began using a different texting app (forget which one), I started having problems with duplicate messages being received. Last night I installed Textra and thought the problem was finally gone. Today while looking at the same texts received during testing last night, I suddenly have duplicate texts from last night for some messages (they were single copies last night). Really bizarre. I have also noticed that with Textra, the double text replies seem to now be only with my group texts.
Reading various threads, I became suspicious that maybe something in the Google contact phone numbers has become corrupted. Sure enough, some of the group contact phone numbers could no longer be easily edited. I messed around with the suspect contact information until I could edit the phone number to its simplest form (from +1 (123) 345-7890 changed to 123-456-7890). Seems to be working now. Will need another day to see if the texting acts up once again.
Now to figure out what is corrupting my Google contact information...
it's the 6.0 marshmallow update ..my Blu Vivo was just fine until i updated my phone i suggest you factory reset your phone.

LG Watch Sport (W280A)

Anyone else buy one? I got one last Friday (2/10/17) from AT&T and have noticed that most android wear apps aren't compatible yet. Anyone have any app suggestions?
Hey, got mine Monday via the play store. I'm just learning the device. Love it so far, but has a pretty good learning curve as I have not been using android wear since the OG Moto 360
Would love to find an extra charger (WCD-H100) to keep at my office... does anyone know of where to get one?
Got mine Saturday at an AT&t store. Went in to get the LG v20 and the sales rep brought it out. Said they got it that day. I wasn't planning on replacing my G watch, but when he checked to see if there were any deals, I could not pass it up for $50. I haven't found any accessories yet. I am also very happy with it so far. i just really want a screen protector.
Does anyone know where I can get the LG Watch Sport with international shipping?

Took me awhile to figure out you have to install the watch apps from the playstore app on the watch - they no longer auto-install on the watch when you install the app on your phone.

I am not getting text message notification cards on my watch. I get the message notification tone (I have installed feel the wear) but I don't see an actual notification card on the watch. Any ideas? Email notification cards and pretty much all the others work just fine.
I ordered mine in store from Verizon last Monday. Website says it doesn't ship until 3/16
I've had the watch since the Monday after it launched and was initially not overly impressed. That all changed once I got my T-Mobile digits cloned sim card.
I now have a true stand alone communications device on my wrist. I actually leave my phone often times and use my watch with headphones to make/receive calls. Texting, calls, music, workout monitor, this thing is the absolute bomb! Speech to text on the watch is amazing, fast and accurate. The sound on headphones is not as good as my V20 but I'll accept the sacrifice.
Two gripes; the operating system reminds me of OG IOS. In other words, you have to go back to home to move between apps. A recents button would be huge! 2nd, the battery life is less than desired. I can't get a day out of it with cell service running even with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS off. The build quality on the other hand is top notch!
All in all, this thing is the epitome of a wearable!

NFC tag discovery?
Was just wondering if this new watch has the nfc tag discovery function. Can it read NFC tags for non-payment purposes?
So, got my watch yesterday, and wanna make a declaration for AT&T users with the Pixel from Google. Number sync WILL NOT work. They will not enable (AT&T) VoLTE for this feature to work, and blame Google for not releasing specific configuration items or to provision the VoLTE package for AT&T. As a workaround, I am using Google Voice. I ported my at&t number for the Pixel and setup forwarding to the watch. Crude, but so far its working. Calling out does not work, since GV wont install on the watch. Any ideas? (Obv when I call out, it shows the watch number and not my main)

Yes, NFC will work like any other. It just has all the necessary prerequisites as well, to be eligible for Android Pay.

I have AT&T and choose to use Google Voice because its better than NumberSync. Besides being both carrier and device agnostic, its more powerful, more reliable and gives us greater control over our number.
I have a Gear S3, but the process for preserving your GV caller ID is the same for any device not running Android or iOS. It's a hassle to setup, because the work that's done automatically by the GV app needs to be manually setup.
GV assigns each number in your contact list an alias number. Calls or texts placed to that number (from any device associated with your GV account) will show your GV ID. These numbers need to be saved on your device and used instead of their real number.
The first step is to capture the alias numbers. Check your messaging app, they may be displayed in your texts to the contacts. Some phones (ie. LG Stylo 2) briefly display the alias number while dialing a contact. Once captured, the number needs to be added to the contact's profile. After this is synced with your Google account, its available on any device that can access your account. I went through this process a few years ago when using a dumb phone, so when I got my watch, the contacts alias (and regular) numbers were automatically loaded on it. When using the watch, I tap on the contact and select the alias number when placing calls or texts. No one knows my watch number (or my cell phone number), only my GV number.
Now that you’ve ported your number to GV, there are two ways to handle texts. Using the messaging app associated with the devices (via call forwarding) or using Hangouts. If your collection of devices includes a tablet or a computer, using Hangouts will allow messages (and call history and voicemail) to be seen on those devices as well.
Long post, but I hope it helps.

Can you provide more clarity on the use of GV? Have you tried it with the LGWS or just the G3? I use my GV # for all of my phones and want to use it for the LGWS. Are you saying that I have to capture the alias # for every contacts #? What about #'s that aren't in my contacts? If I add the LGWS phone # to my GV account (just like I did for my office and mobile phones), won't that take care of the issue?
As for texting, you say "Using the messaging app associated with the devices (via call forwarding) or using Hangouts." It sounds like Hangouts will allow text messaging through GV thereby showing the GV #. Correct?
---------- Post added at 07:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:51 AM ----------
1. Outlook Exchange for email, calendar, and contacts (and be able to see all of these on the watch).
2. Google Voice for calling and messaging.
3. Will receive notifications of calls, text messages, emails, calendar alerts.
Thanks!

My GV number is the only number that I know, carrier assigned numbers are meaningless. So I understand where you're coming from. I'm not a tech head so I can't explain it any better than to say the GV app is basically a script. When you select a contact's number, the GV app steps in and dials the assigned alias number for that contact. Ditto with messaging, if the GV app isn't configured properly (to use your native messaging app), your carrier number will be revealed.
On devices that don't have a GV app, it must be done manually. Unless there's a GV app for Android Wear or the AW version of Hangouts can make calls, the process will be the same. I've never laid hands on the LG watch, so I can't speak specifically about it. Since very few folks have the Sport, it might be helpful to post on the LG U2 forum, should be a couple of GV users there.
The manual process sounds more tedious than it actually is. Realize that it only applies to communications that: 1) you initiate and 2) from the watch and 3) in standalone mode. All incoming calls and texts can be received and replied to without the alias number. When the watch is connected via BT, its basically a remote control, outgoing calls go through the phone, so the GV app is used. Texting is a bit more complicated. There is no Hangouts app for Tizen, so you can reply but not initiate. Texts can be placed with the Tizen messaging app, but again, if the alias number isn't used, the watch number will be revealed.
When its filtered down, out of the few hundred contacts you may have listed in your Google account, there are probably only a couple of dozen numbers that you need to capture. The first time you dial a new number on a phone associated with your GV account, the GV app creates an alias number, even if you don't create a new contact. This will need to be manually captured for the watch if future use is desired.
I am happy with the S3 but would switch to AW, if/when it has better integration with GV and better standalone capability than the S3. I don't believe it does at this time. Please let me know if you discover otherwise.
Getting a handle on this

Thanks for the clarification. I'm no techie either! Can you explain what you mean by alias #? And how do you manually capture it?
Much appreciated.

Though not specific to smartwatches, here's a thread on XDA that discusses this topic in detail. Some folks call it a shadow number.

Locked or unlocked is irrelevant because it has an embedded SIM. No one has reported being able to get another provider to program it, even if on the same network. For example, no has been able to put the AT&T version on Cricket. Or use the T-Mobile version on MetroPCS.
Doesn't the AT&T and Google Play Versions just have a Nano Sim card slot?

It does not have an embedded SIM. It has a nano sim and the one of Google Store is unlocked. There are many posts on the internet about using other carriers (TMO, Project Fi) with it. Google is your friend.

Question Incoming calls not showing names

Hi,
I've recently moved from a Galaxy S21 to the Pixel 7.
Ever since, on my new Pixel, incoming calls (it might be for specific callers, still unsure) will not show their names, only the numbers!
Later on, on the recent calls list, their names will appear perfectly.
When the incoming call is just a popup over another app, or through notifications, it would actually show the name.
My headphones would even say the name of the caller with the incoming call.
But the phone app would only show a number.
Attaching screenshots.
I've tried already to clear both cache & data of the phone app.
Any suggestions are welcome!
In your contacts (address book app) are the numbers exactly the same as what is shown in the call log? No + or ( ) ?
Are you using the Google contacts app?
That's my only thought.
Hmm, thanks, I usually have people saved with their country code, and this shows just the local number..
I've tried adding now for one of them also the number without the country code, and funny enough even the popup now doesn't show their name :sss
I have the google contact app, though I'm not sure that's what's used by default on the pixel.
I've tried now to merge some 500 contacts through the google contacts app, it's said it'll take some while before it's reflected on my phone, will check again later if that's made any difference.
i had a similar issue when receiving sms messages and calls. i disabled the chat feature in the messaging app which solved the problem for me.

Does the phone app have permissions for Contacts? Did you try stopping the phone app, clearing the storage, and then reopen it?
