Question how i can update with rooted S21 Ultra exynos - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

hello there ..
plz hlp how i cat update software with keep rooted

Unroot and go back to stock.

If it's running well... leave it alone.

You'll have to root again probably.
So it's a waste of time to update it and lose the Root unless there is a major upgrade like Android 12.

As Samsung has NO full project treble there are no a/b partitions. So you can't update and keep root. You need to use ODIN to update and then root again which takes about 5 minutes. Just don't wipe your storage with Odin

If you have rooted with magisk it is easy.
Download latest firmware and extract it.
Copy file starts with AP_xxx to phone.
Open magisk and select install
Select option "Select and patch file"
Browse to AP_xxx file which you have copied to phone and patch it.
Locate file normally named as magisk_patched-xxxx.tar to PC again.
open odin and add files to their specific slot.
For AP slot used magisk patched file
For CSC there are two files, here you need to select which have HOME_CSC file not CSC.
If you flash only CSC this is wipe your device so Use HOME_CSC file.
Once flashing process complete, your device will reboot and Voila.
Enjoy upgraded firmware with root retained and without data wiped.
P.S. While coping file to or from device, use adb push or pull respectively as some user report corrupted file while coping it through MTP.

have you found a solution to root galaxy s21 5G us? 6 bit security?

1. Unpack stock firmvare ***.tar.md5 that is currently installed on your tablet (they MUST BE the same!!!).
2. Then unpack AP-block from step 1 to obtain "boot.img" file.
3. Download & install on tablet Magisk Manager APK.
4. Put "boot.img" on SDCARD.
5. Run Magisk Manager, in setiings set "Patch kernel", then setup the Magisk zip (Wi-Fi must be connected to Internet ).
6. When asked, point Magisk Manager to place on SDCARD where "boot.img" saved.
7. After some time You will get "OK".
8. Find on SDCARD file "patched_boot.img". Copy in on PC & rename to "boot.img". Then archive it to "<any name>.tar".
9. Set tablet to download mode & flash above tar-file via AP-slot of Odin-programm.
10. Tablet will reboot & ask to wipe all data to factory's params. Do it... Be noticed, that all passwords, setting, google registry will be wiped.
11. After wiping & rebooting install Magisk Manager APK again... And YEAH!!! You got root!
Thanks for creating this thread. I used the original thread to root my tab, so seeing this as its own thing will be helpful to a lot of people.

Could you clarify on these two steps?
1. Unpack stock firmvare ***.tar.md5 that is currently installed on your tablet (they MUST BE the same!!!).
2. Then unpack AP-block from step 1 to obtain "boot.img" file.

You have to open the stock firmware with an archive manager like WinRar or 7zip. Inside you should find an AP-Block folder. Inside of that should be your boot.img file

Thanks, where can I find the stock firmwares?
Here is another problem
Is OEM unlock in Developer Section required to install patched kernel and TWRP with Odin?
I can't find it even it's updated.
Does anybody know if this rooting method will work with T-585 on Android 7.0 (January 2018 update)? I guess KNOX will be triggered, right?

Have you tried this method even without the option in developer settings to OEM Unlock? On my SM-T350, I don't have the option to OEM unlock either. But I can still root and install TWRP anyways.

Perhaps someone could provide boot.img files and links here?
I for instance found no matching firmwares for mine. The one that had both matching versions numbers, said it was for Cellular US. This is a wifi only model. Confused
Thanks

I have that original boot.img and magisk modified one.
There's a 7 days waiting period after you turned it on the first time regardless reboot or not.
I will make a instruction how to root and I will post kernel and modified kernel.

[Guide] Update Rooted Note FE from Nougat to Oreo

share my process and trouble shooting for upgrading rooted note fe from nougat to oreo without re-install. I eventually got a solution
my nougat installation had data encryption enabled during setup, not sure if it made difference, or the cause of my trouble below.
the process references the post [SM-N935F/DS] How to flash TWRP & Root with Magisk (Int. Ver.) [Oreo Updated] and mostly used files provided there.
start with rooted nougat with TWRP
1. download latest OREO ROM from sammobile. Mine has CSC code XME
2. unzip to five .tar.md5 files
3. flash BL/AP/CP/HOME_CSC via Odin, turn off auto-reboot
4. exist download, and re-enter download immediately without letting it to boot up (press home+volume down+power immediately)
5. flash TWRP in odin
6. reboot into recovery
7. install in TWRP RMM-path
8. install in TWRP no-verty-opt-encrypt. This is required for me as my data is encrypted
9. reboot and let android complete the update process
--- note, I did not install the /data partition patch mentioned in original thread for OREO, as it led to boot loop and I had to re-flash stock rom --
10. reboot back to TWRP and install magisk to root
This should be it. BUT --
system boots up ok, but I noticed that CSC was not installed. there is not even /system/csc folder. somehow, the csc was not installed during the installation process. I tried multiple time, same results. here is how I got over it
1. from stock rom 's HOME_CSC_xxx.tar.md5 file, remove ".md5" to turn it to a tar file, and use 7zip to unzip it and take cache.img.lz4
2. use lz4 tool to covert cache.img.lz4 to cache.img
3. use SVAImgUnpack to covert cache.img to cache.ext4.img
4. use ext2explore.exe included in SVAImgUnpack to open cache.ext4.img and extract the sec_csc.img (ext2explorer.exe needs to run with admin)
5. use TWRP to install the extracted sec_csc.img
6. open a terminal in TWRP or use adb shell to run the following command cp -dpfr /system/csc/XME/system/* /system
that is it. and it should work.
If you need to enable VoLTE for Verizon or T-Mobile. extract customer.xml file from Galaxy S8 rom CSC's VZW or TMB folder, and copy it to overwrite customer.xml file under /system/csc.
Thx For informations This phones community is quiet silent :/

What happened to the boot.img patching option in Magisk Manager?

I know Magisk can be flashed via TWRP, and that is the preferred way for me, usually. But on Magisk 19.3 I don't see an option to patch the boot.img without flashing the Magisk installer zip from TWRP. I just want to patch the img and flash it via Odin (I have a Samsung device, fastboot not available on those). I would like to keep the recovery as stock and system partition unmodified with dm-verity enabled. That way I can just use system less modules.
I normally prefer Phh's Superuser or SuperSU, I like old fashioned, traditional root without systemless or modules. But there are some tests I would like to run, and modules I would like to try.
Thanks!
It's right there if you press the install button and choose "Install"... If it it isn't on your setup you need to provide more information.
And both phh's and SuperSU are systemless root.
My setup:
Samsung Galaxy Note 4 N910F (international unbranded variant, latest stock Marshmallow firmware)
When I press install in Magisk Manager, it only offers the option to download a zip, no boot.img patching. I need the output file as tar or tar.md5, not img, so it can be flashed with Odin (no need for TWRP if flashed that way).
You're right, Phh is systemless, but it doesn't offer modules. SuperSU can be systemless or forced as system-installed.
So you don't have the "Select and patch a file" option at all? If you're looking for a specific tar file option there isn't one anymore. Just pick the file and let the Manager do the rest.

Hi, I am confused. I did use Manager 7.3.5 with Magisk 19 and now latest 20 .
When I use "select and patch a file". Use a stock boot.img file from my Tab 4 8.0 T330 Android v5.1.1 last version available. Whilst patched file is being created, a message flashes on screen img or tar file can be selected.
The problem is there is No option to "select img or tar file in output" as was the case in earlier versions of Manager v5 or 6. Which I previously used to create either patched img or tar files.
I have created different img files using the same original boot.img, only created using different Manager updates as they are created and released. Each time a new version creates a different file size.
Therefore you comment "tar file option is no more". WHY NOT.???
Next comment Just pick the file and let the Manager do the rest". Please explain or provide link to method you are referring to.
Another Question. Can I use an earlier img or tar file created on earlier Manager version with the latest Magisk version to install Magisk 20 on the Tablet. I have also used "img to tar to md5" convertor software and use ODIN to update the patched boot file, or install TWRP and use patched img file.
Any comments would be appreciated. Cheers
@BeeJ1109 It just means that the Manager will detect what type of file you're providing and outputs an img or tar file depending on the input. Tar in, tar out, etc.
There's no specific option for it in the settings anymore, since it is handled automatically now.

Hi, Didgeridoohan, Thanks for your reply.
So I understand that if I use boot.img it will convert to patched.boot.img or patched.magisk.img.
If I use boot.tar it will convert to patched.boot.tar or patched.magisk.tar.
Question 1: So you are now saying I have to use another app to convert img to tar before patching or after patching.
Seems to me a backward function of your latest Manager, when previously you had a choice to select which option you received as the output file. So much extra time and effort to achieve the same result.
Question 2: This the case then I have to install latest manager and reinstall older version that worked. Create patched file as tar. Use ODIN to install patched boot file.
Do I need to rename magisk to boot, so ODIN will accept the patched tar file.
I use latest ODIN 13 on my Samsung Galaxy Tabs 4 & S4 and Phones S3, S4, & S8.
Question 3: Will older version created Tar file work with latest version Magisk to Root device, Then update both Magisk and Manager as normal when updates are released.
Or do I root using same version Magisk and Manager that created the patched boot file, then update to latest version.
I have successfully updated Stock and RR or Lineage OS Firmwares for years.
Samsung devices do not allow sideload installs and ODIN is so easy to use to install updates or new versions for all devices.
I also used other methods to root devices ie TWRP, Flashfire, but now Magisk is updated regularly, Hide Apps works on 7.1 thru 10, whereas old apps don't work past Android 4.4.
Thanks for your assistance, Cheers BJ.
@BeeJ1109 I know very little about Samsung so I can't really answer most of your questions, but wouldn't the file be a tar file to start with?
Anyway, if you wish for some functions to work differently than they currently do I would suggest opening a feature request issue in GitHub (with a detailed description of what you want).
Any solution?
Hi there, i know this is an old thread, but i was wondering if anyone found a solution for this.
I am also trying to install Magisk Manager, modifying the boot.img file from my firmware. The problem i find is that the boot.img is inside a boot.img.lz4 (which i open with the modified 7zip), and that is inside another img.tar file.
Now, i seem to understand the old Magisk Manager (version 6 for example), would allow to decide the output file, while the v7 does not anymore. I would just receive a repatched_boot.img file, which i cannot use to flash using Odin.
I also tried installing Magisk v6, but it will force to update upon doing the repatching.
Do you have any other solution?
PS: all reason i'm trying to do this is trying to install (any) TWRP on my tablet SM-P580 will show a blue/black screen.

Hi.
Use Magisk Manager to create a modified stock boot.img. as you have mentioned.
What I do is search for Windoows PC "img to tar converter" app. on Google search.
Lots will be found. They a small executable batch file. Which you Right click on the "convert tar".exe file to run on a Windows PC.
Best one will have Input and Output directories. You can inset your patched boot .img file, you have just downloaded for your device. Add this file into Input directory of the app using Windows Explorer File Manager. May have to setup the location of resultant output directory. Then run Img to Tar converter . The application will convert your patched_boot img file into a patched_boot.tar file.
That newly modified .tar can now use ODIN. To install patched_boot.tar onto your connected device via PC USB port using the Latest version of ODIN 3.14.1.
Hope that helps. CHEERS

Alternative method magisk root [stock android 9][NO TWRP][Samsung A70 FN/DS]

purpose of this post is to share an alternative method for those who fail to root using @topjohnwu recommended method or the method posted by @Grarak here on A70 forum that involves patching recovery.img in magisk and then flashing that in twrp>install to boot.
failing to root means either bootloops or unstable magisk root or magisk root disappearing randomly or after a module installation.
this is not my original guide , i was told this method by @raeumler via PM and i am sharing it on A70 forums incase other methods dont work. Some of the steps may not be neccesary , but i did them ritually anyway
my phone model is SM-A705FN /DS and firmware version is A705FNXXU5ASL4( with 1st jan 2020 updates) . country is PAK
do this at your own risk! i will not be responsible for any negative consequences
appropiate links and files will be posted as attachments
rooting procedure( read each step twice)
1- UNLOCKING BOOTLOODER= this will factory reset device . backup your data
read step 02 of this linked guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-a70/development/recovery-twrp-galaxy-a70-t3955984
DOWNLOAD FIRMWARE AND ATTACHMENTS= now i am assuming you have stock samsung android 9. if not, download your firmware via SamFirm windows program and flash in odin to go to stock[ program available in attachements]. Download other attachements too
2-Find vbmeta.tar in downloaded attachments and unpack it. you will get vbmeta.img file.
3. unzip stock Samfirm downloaded firmware. you will get 5 files in it (BL,AP,CP,CSC and CSC_HOME).open the AP File from the factory rom with 7zip
4. remove userdata.img, vendor.img and system.img from the AP file
5. replace vbmeta.img with the one you have downloaded in step 2.
6. repack AP as AP.tar [ use 7zip or peazip. i used peazip windows program, ensure file type is TAR]. transfer this AP.tar to your phone
7. install magisk manager 7.5.1 on your phone and open it. connect your phone to internet.
8. hit the upper install button and choose "patch a file"
9. choose the repacked AP file and patch it[ this requires active internet as magisk needs to download its zip file]
10. copy the AP file which magisk creates in internal storage/download/magisk_patched.tar back to your pc (better keep it named as such for differentiation, its irrelevant how the file is named as long its a tar file)
11. download, unzip and open Odin 3.1.3.1[available in attachements]. i used Odin3+v3.13.1_3B_PatcheD.exe , there is a simple version too inside the zip
12. go into download mode on your phone (shut down completely then hold vol+ vol- togather and plug in cable connected to PC ). Odins should show Com port X as blue
13. in odin: put the BL, CP and HOME_CSC in its place (the files from the factory firmware you downloaded in step 1 from SamFirm windows program) and place the magisk patched AP on AP
16. check if you want autoreboot or not, its your own taste (some feel safer with autoreboot unchecked, both works)[ i kept autoreboot checked]
15. hit start and let it finish (when it stucks on something try another cable and install latest samsung adb driver.)
16. let the system reboot
17. if you get stuck in bootloop or freeze >10 min on samsung logo, try to force reboot.press volume down + power till screen turns blank then press volume + and power till bootloader unlock screen appears and then let go of all keys.
if still it doesnt boot, then press volume down and power togather to force shutdown and then press volume up and power till stock recovery boots up. Mine at this stage said firmware is corrupt ,factory reset needed so thats what i did in stock recovery. power off system in stock recovery and then press volume+ and power till bootloader warning screen , let go of all buttons, it should now boot up fine with magisk manager app in app drawer. DONT OPEN IT YET
download this app from play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fr.petrus.tools.reboot&hl=en_US. open app and press reboot. No need to press any keys
on reboot complete ,connect to internet, open magisk, let it check for updates, it should say installed in both portions. magisk will do additional enviromental steps and then reboot. on booted up, use the linked reboot app to reboot again.
now magisk should be installed all fine
for viper4android>open magisk>swipe left and tap downloads> installed 2.7.1.6> reboot with linked app
on reboot check if app is installed, if not > install and login on xda labs and download viper4android 2.7.1.6> open app> give it root accesss> let it reboot device on installtion> on bootied up reboot again with linked app and then check drivers on viper4android[ make sure master switch is on and then play some music ,tap the chip icon to see driver status and processing status
from here onward, always use the linked reboot app to reboot device. if an app or module reboot device automatically( like viper4android does ) then on boot complete, reboot again with the linked app
Credits to @Grarak for his original work and files

Unfortunately, it doesn't work on Android 10.
There is an error in Odin when flashing files.
The error is when flash the AP file, more specifically vbmeta.

Looks like a useful guide, thank you for putting it up. I'm really not sure how to get the firmware though from the SamFirm program. I found this ( https://androidmtk.com/use-samfirm-tool - might be useful info?) since I have never used the samfirm tool before I am lost at that step. I don't know if there's a list of region codes somewhere? I have an 'international version' A70. Using SM-A705MN, baseband version A705MNXXU3ASI1 .. Since I'm in the US, should I look to getting that type of ROM or should I find out what region this particular ROM already on the phone is, and use that?
I've done rooting before (Samsung S4, HTC M9, LG V20) but these phones seem even more complicated.
Even if all this works, then the root is not 'permanent'? I'm not sure why a different 'reboot app' would be needed if the system is modified in a way to enable things like magisk/super su?

Download phone info app and note pda, csc and phone codes.
Use these codes to Google your exact firmware and download that ( you may have to visit various websites that offer better speed)
The samfirm, frija only allows latest firmware to be download, not the currently installed one.
One you have the stick firmware file, then you can proceed with rooting.
If you are on android 9 use this guide
If you are on Android 10 use MarvinMod guide.
This reboot app is what I currently use. Haven't experimented with other apps.
The root is permanent as long as your reboot with the mentioned key combination or the reboot app.
The reboot app simple allows you to reboot without the key combination. If you don't want to use this app then you must reboot with the mentioned key combination to retain root. Otherswise you wouldn't have root unless you reboot again with correct combination.
To make this easy I suggested that reboot app
Yes I feel you bro, I had Samsung note 2 then note 4 phone and they were easier to root.
But with Google changing things the best way to root is to use magisk and this complicated methods
i think you can make a little script for rebooting. should work. i really want to know how the bootpartition is corrected, at boot its recovery-from-boot.p as image and install-recovery.sh for reenabling stockrecovery. if you rename this files bootup should work without reflashing boot or recovery. there have to be something similar to the rebootprocess, a script that flashes a sparse image (the *.p file to delete su binary or something like that..) or it just kills the su binary in the folders itself. im to stupid for dmesg and logcat i couldnt find out whats going on at reboot. also the petrus reboot app reboots instant, keys doesnt. seems to be that adb reboot deletes root too. yesterday, somehow my fone did sonething last night, which crashes root again.....i need twrp urgent to make backup. but the binary let not decrypt it. U5 is android 10 bootloader and there are some issues with twrp (decrypt). last time it has saved my backuptry to /data/backupfolder as internal is encrypted. i dont want to factoryreset this phone....is it complicated to build a recovery ? or is there something like a clickitalltogetherapp?
---------- Post added at 09:46 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 AM ----------
following reboot variants keeping root:
hold all keys for 10 seconds
reboot via terminal or script
petrus app
following kills root:
standartreboot with hw-keys
adb reboot (on a dosprompt from pc)
boot to stockrecovery
magisk module reboot
but thats is such a XXXX .. i dont have a word for it, in the beginning computers and so are working logical....seems that samsungs security trends are not that logical as needed... i hate samsung :/. there have to be someone who find the "unsu"-files...cannot be....

following reboot variants keeping root:
hold all keys for 10 seconds
reboot via terminal or script
petrus app
following kills root:
standartreboot with hw-keys
adb reboot (on a dosprompt from pc)
boot to stockrecovery
magisk module reboot
but thats is such a XXXX .. i dont have a word for it, in the beginning computers and so are working logical....seems that samsungs security trends are not that logical as needed... i hate samsung :/. there have to be someone who find the "unsu"-files...cannot be....

I didn't messed with boot or recuvery files like the way you DM me.
But I have been noticing strange behavior with petrus app.
Reboot option in petrus app is kinda of like fast reboot or reboot UI. Because all apps opened and present in task manager remain so after reboot with petrus app.
Also once you power off with petrus app,
1= booting up with root key combination results in phone getting freeze Or bootlooping
2=. Force shutting phone again bootloop phone.
3= Going to stock recovery and rebooting system bootloop.
4= going to stock recuvery and shutting off phone from there and then simply pressing power button without key combination, successfully bootup phone with root intact.
This is such a bizzare behaviour
Oh and i am still on Android 9 pie.

Any magisk module that can make sd card as adopted storage on Android 10?

Did google remove the option of adopted storage? I don't see it on my SM-T295. I rooted it so I was wondering if there is a Magisk Module that can make sd card act like adopted storage.
Thank you.
Can you tell how did you root your tab please.

I have tried many methods dude
Before Installing Magisk
Installing Magisk WILL trip KNOX
Installing Magisk for the first time REQUIRES a full data wipe (this is NOT counting the data wipe when unlocking bootloader). Backup your data before continue.
Download Odin (only runs on Windows) that supports your device.
Unlocking BootloaderUnlocking the bootloader on modern Samsung devices have some caveats. The newly introduced VaultKeeper service will make the bootloader reject any unofficial partitions in some circumstances.
Allow bootloader unlocking in Developer options → OEM unlocking
Reboot to download mode: power off your device and press the download mode key combo for your device
Long press volume up to unlock the bootloader. This will wipe your data and automatically reboot.
Go through the initial setup. Skip through all the steps since data will be wiped again in later steps. Connect the device to Internet during the setup.
Enable developer options, and confirm that the OEM unlocking option exists and is grayed out. This means the VaultKeeper service has unleashed the bootloader.
Your bootloader now accepts unofficial images in download mode
Instructions
Use either samfirm.js, Frija, or Samloader to download the latest firmware zip of your device directly from Samsung servers.
Unzip the firmware and copy the AP tar file to your device. It is normally named as AP_[device_model_sw_ver].tar.md5
Press the Install button in the Magisk card
If your device does NOT have boot ramdisk, check the “Recovery Mode” option
Choose “Select and Patch a File” in method, and select the AP tar file
Start the installation, and copy the patched tar file to your PC using ADB:
adb pull /sdcard/Download/magisk_patched_[random_strings].tar
DO NOT USE MTP as it is known to corrupt large files.
Reboot to download mode. Open Odin on your PC, and flash magisk_patched.tar as AP, together with BL, CP, and CSC (NOT HOME_CSC because we want to wipe data) from the original firmware.
Your device should reboot automatically once Odin finished flashing. Agree to do a factory reset if asked.
If your device does NOT have boot ramdisk, reboot to recovery now to enable Magisk (reason stated in Magisk in Recovery).
Install the Magisk app you’ve already downloaded and launch the app. It should show a dialog asking for additional setup.
Let the app do its job and automatically reboot the device. Voila!
I have tried this one
